Gea, la nueva apuesta de Sakata Seed Ibérica en brócoli La casa de semillas eligió Murcia para presentar Gea, su última novedad en el catálogo de cultivo de brócoli.

La homogeneidad de la pella es el gran valor de Gea por su atractivo para los supermercados Ares que sobresale por su precocidad y uniformidad y este año ha sido el turno de Gea.

a jornada tuvo lugar en la localidad de Alhama y contó con la asistencia de cerca de 300 personas, entre agricultores, técnicos, distribución, comercializadores y medios de comunicación.

Durante el evento los asistentes pudieron conocer la nueva variedad que la empresa llevaba años desarrollando y que se estrena como comercial, de la mano del product promoter de brásicas de la compañía, Antonio Ibarra.

Gea tiene un tronco fino y su peso está concentrado en la cabeza. Con pocas heridas en las inserciones con las hojas, presenta menos daños de oxidación. Su recolección se desarrolla desde mediados de diciembre hasta finales de marzo. Una recolección que destaca por su uniformidad y homogeneidad, lo que facilita muchísimo el proceso de confección en los almacenes. Además, su alta compacidad permite mayor peso por volumen, lo que reduce los costes logísticos.

Su homogeneidad la convierte en una pella muy atractiva para los lineales de los supermercados, sobre todo para aquellos interesados en calibres entre 350 y 500 gramos.

Gea, Sakata Seed Ibérica’s new option in broccoli

The seed company chose Murcia to present Gea, its latest development in the broccoli growing catalogue.

The session took place in the town of Alhama and was attended by around 300 people, amongst farmers, technicians, distributors, marketers and the media. During the event those attending were able to discover the new variety that the company has spent years developing and that is being marketed by the company’s winter vegetable product promoter, Antonio Ibarra.

Gea has a slender stem and its weight is concentrated in the head. With few wounds on the inserts with the leaves, it has less oxidation damage. It is harvested from the middle of December until the end of March. A harvest that stands out due to its uniformity and homogeneity, which makes the preparation process in the warehouses much easier. Additionally, its compactness allows greater weight for volume, which reduces the logistics expenses. Its homogeneity makes its head very attractive for the supermarket shelves, particularly those interested in sizes weighing between 350 and 500 grams.

In recent years, the seed company has devoted some of its research efforts to this winter vegetable, which has allowed it to be very active every year in the launching of new proposals. In 2015, Triton was the new development, a variety that stands out due to its deep green colour and its high yield; in 2016 Ares was presented, standing out due to its earliness and its uniformity, and this year it is Gea’s turn.

The company’s goal is to offer produce that satisfies the needs of the farmers and of society as a whole.

Sakata is committed to research and amongst its goals is the idea of encouraging the consumption of this and other vegetables, either with its own initiative, ‘Brócoli Pasión’ or participating in associations such as ‘Más Brócoli’ or ‘5 Al Día’.

“5 al día” prepara su evento más importante

E

l próximo 6 de marzo se celebrará la XX Asamblea General de Socios en el salón de actos del Centro Administrativo de Mercamadrid, evento que se ha forjado ya como un punto de encuentro entre los socios de “5 al día”.

Durante la Asamblea el equipo de la Asociación presentará toda la actividad del año 2017 y presentará los presupuestos y acciones previstos para el 2018.

Además, en esta ocasión tendrán lugar elecciones a la Junta Directiva, donde se renovarán la mitad de los componentes. Terminada la Asamblea General de Socios se celebrará una cena donde se entregarán un año más los premios “5 al Día”.

La Jornada Profesional “5 al Día” será el 7 de marzo. Se celebrará también en el salón de actos del Centro Administrativo de Mercamadrid.

“5 al día” is preparing its most important event of the year On the 6th of March, the 20th General Assembly of Members will be held in the conference hall of Mercamadrid’s Administrative Centre, an event that has now been established as a meeting point for the members of “5 al día.”

During the Assembly, the team from the Association will display all the activities from 2017, along with the budgets and actions planned for 2018.

Fruit Logistica amplía su abanico de conferencias Fruit Today entrevistó a Silvia de Juanes, directora de Comunicación para España y América Latina de la feria

Los productos ecológicos están cobrando un gran auge, ¿cómo se refleja esto en la feria?

Fruit Logistica superó el año pasado, por primera vez, los 3.000 expositores. ¿Qué previsiones tienen este año?

La feria reunirá de nuevo a más de 3.000 expositores, entre ellos empresas que representan toda la cadena de valor; desde los semilleros hasta minoristas, aunque el foco sigue centrado en los productores, comercializadores y compradores. Los elementos para el éxito son realmente simples; nos aseguramos de ofrecer las mejores oportunidades de negocios y de innovación y la mejor información para el comercio mundial de productos frescos.

La presencia de España en la Feria es importante. ¿Qué porcentaje representa actualmente?

Este año se puede esperar una participación española aún mayor. Ya de por sí es excelente y refleja el papel tan importante que los productores y proveedores españoles desempeñan en la cadena de suministro interinstitucional de frutas y hortalizas frescas. Es natural que España ocupe un lugar destacado entre los tres principales países 12 Fruittoday

Respondiendo a la demanda del consumidor, el segmento “Orgánico” ofrece un gran potencial para impulsar las ventas en el sector minorista de alimentos. Follow me!, en castellano “¡Sígueme!”, es el slogan de un sistema que permite a los proveedores de productos orgánicos certificados ser localizados de manera rápida, directa y precisa.

Utilizando un servicio on-line especial, los visitantes profesionales pueden crear sus propias rutas e identificar fácilmente a los proveedores de productos orgánicos.

Entre los grandes valores del certamen están las conferencias en sus diferentes vertientes. ¿Qué temáticas abordarán en esta edición?

El programa de este año da comienzo con el “Fruitnet World of Fresh Ideas”, que presenta las últimas tendencias e innovaciones en el mundo de los productos frescos. A ello le sigue el “Fresh Produce Forum”, que aborda una serie de desafíos clave a los que se enfrenta la industria.

También está el “Future Lab”, donde se destacan algunos de los productos, servicios y tendencias más interesantes en su etapa conceptual. Además, se puede obtener información sobre los nuevos desarrollos en la logística de frío en el “Logistics Hub”, ver un adelanto de lo que será la tecnología del mañana en el “Tech Stage” y pasar por el “Frutic Symposium” para escuchar cómo se optimiza el uso del agua en la cadena de suministro de productos frescos.

Por último, ¿qué retos le esperan a Fruit Logistica en los próximos años?

Publicaremos por primera vez el “Stadistic Handbook” que es una guía donde se pone en valor el perfil de producción, exportación e importación correspondientes a los mercados líderes de Europa.

Por otra parte, la familia Fruit Logistica trabaja en el lanzamiento de China Fruit Logistica, especializada en el producto fresco que tendrá lugar por primera vez en Shánghai del 14 al 16 de mayo.

The trade fair will once again bring together over 3,000 exhibitors, amongst them companies that represent the entire chain of value: from the seed companies to the retailers, although the focus continues to be centred on the producers, marketers and buyers. The elements involved in the success are really simple: we guarantee to offer the best business and innovation opportunities, and the best information for the worldwide fresh produce business.

Spain has an important presence at the Fair. What percentage does it currently represent?

This year an even greater Spanish participation is expected. It is already excellent and it reflects the highly important role that Spanish producers and suppliers play in the inter-institutional supply chain of fresh fruit and vegetables. It is natural for Spain to occupy a prominent place amongst the three main supplier countries, along with Italy and the Netherlands.

There is an important boom in ecological produce, how is this being dealt with at the fair?

By responding to the consumers’ demand, the “Organic” segment offers great potential to boost sales in the retail food sector. Follow me! is the slogan for a system that allows certified organic produce suppliers to be located quickly, directly and accurately. Using a special on-line service, professional visitors can create their own routes and easily identify organic produce suppliers.

The different conferences are amongst the fair’s most important values. Which topics will they cover at this edition?

This year’s programme starts off with the “Fruitnet World of Fresh Ideas”, which presents the latest trends and innovations in the world of fresh produce. This is followed by the “Fresh Produce Forum”, which covers a series of key challenges being faced by the industry.

There is also the “Future Lab”, which highlights some of the most interesting produce, services and trends during their conceptual phase. Additionally, information may be obtained about the new developments in the logistics of refrigeration at the “Logistics Hub”; seeing an advance of what will be tomorrow’s technology in the “Tech Stage” and passing through the “Frutic Symposium” to listen to how the use of water is optimised in the supply chain of fresh produce.

Finally, what challenges does Fruit Logistica expect over the next few years?

For the first time we will publish the “Statistics Handbook”, which is a guide where value is given to the production, exports and imports corresponding to the leading European markets.

On the other hand, the Fruit Logistica family is working on the launch of China Fruit Logistica, specialising in fresh produce, which will take place for the first time in Shanghai from the 14th to the 16th of May.

Gran aceptación de ADORA en los mercados internacionales

El tomate con certificado sabor de HM.Clause ha conquistado a los consumidores más exigentes por sus cualidades gustativas

E

l pasado mes de octubre, en el marco de Fruit Attraction, HM.Clause llevó a cabo la presentación oficial de su primer proyecto de marca en tomate, ADORA, un nuevo Marmande que se diferencia por su color marrón, unas cualidades gustativas que no dejan indiferente a nadie y su firmeza, óptima para exportación. Desde entonces ADORA ha tenido una proyección más que positiva en los mercados, y su aceptación a nivel internacional ya es una realidad.

“Llegamos con un tomate que es sabroso de verdad. A esto le sumamos la garantía de que cada tomate etiquetado con la marca ADORA ha pasado los controles de sabor y que los productores que están en el proyecto son unos de los que más experiencia tienen en tomate (CASI, Agrupalmería, Granada La Palma y, para el ecológico, Biosabor). Por todo ello nos ha resultado relativamente fácil introducirlo”, explica el responsable del proyecto ADORA, Manuel Ferrer.

ADORA da un paso más en una tipología que ha sido la bandera de la firma durante muchos años. En primer lugar, recupera la confianza del consumidor en el Marmande, una tipología que, debido a la atomización del mercado, había provocado que los

consumidores encontrasen variedades muy heterogéneas. Con ADORA esto no pasa. Cada uno de los tomates lleva un sticker a modo de certificado de sabor que garantiza un balance óptimo entre ácido cítrico, ácido málico, fructosa y sacarosa, potenciando el sabor y el aroma del fruto.

Y además de este sello, el consumidor puede distinguirlo fácilmente por su color marrón. Otra gran cualidad de ADORA es su ritmo de maduración. “No es una variedad con genética de larga vida, pero sí vira muy lentamente y esto permite exportarlo más lejos, conservando el sabor, la textura y el aroma”.

Desde este invierno ADORA se encuentra en los principales supermercados europeos y en las plazas más exigentes de España, siendo la mejor época para degustarlo los meses de noviembre a final de mayo, cuando el fruto alcanza sus mejores propiedades organolépticas. Ferrer recomienda consumirlo a temperatura ambiente, para poder disfrutar al máximo la experiencia. “ADORA es protagonista de cualquier plato, es ideal para degustarlo solo o con un poco de aceite”.

El fallo se conocerá el 9 de febrero a las 14:30h en el pasaje entre los pabellones 20 y 21 de la Messe.

To this we add the guarantee that each tomato labelled with the ADORA brand has passed the flavour controls and that the producers involved on the project are the companies with the greatest experience in tomatoes (CASI, Agrupalmería, Granada La Palma and for the ecological range, Biosabor). For all these reasons, it has been relatively easy for us to introduce it,” explains the person in charge of the ADORA project, Manuel Ferrer.

ADORA takes a step further in a type that has been the company’s flagship for many years.

In the first place, it recovers consumers’ confidence in the Marmande, a type which, due to the fragmentation of the market, meant that consumers had found very heterogeneous varieties. This won’t happen with ADORA. Each of the tomatoes has a sticker certifying the flavour that guarantees a perfect balance between citric

acid, malic acid, fructose and sucrose, enhancing the fruit’s flavour and aroma. And, in addition to this stamp, consumers can easily identify it due to its brown colour. Another great quality of ADORA is its ripening rate. “It is not a variety with long life genetics, but it does ripen very slowly and this allows it to be exported greater distances, conserving its flavour, texture and aroma.”

From this winter on, ADORA can be found in the main European supermarkets and in the most demanding markets of Spain, with the best season for tasting it being from November to the end of May, when the fruit reaches its best organoleptic properties. Ferrer recommends eating it at room temperature, in order to enjoy the experience to the full. “ADORA is the star of any dish; it is ideal for eating on its own or with a little oil.”

The good properties of ADORA have given it a place amongst the nominees for the Fruit Logistica Innovation Awards 2018 (FLIA), the most important awards in the entire fruit and vegetable sector that pays tribute to the chain’s most outstanding innovations. The ruling will be passed on the 9th of February at 2.30 pm on the corridor between halls 20 and 21 of the Messe.

Nueva envasadora para ‘zipper’ Induser ha ideado una embolsadora para el packaging de moda en EE.UU. y ha lanzado una pesadora multicabezal que automatiza el pesaje de pimiento con porcentaje de color

omienza un nuevo año y, como es habitual, las empresas hacen un repaso a la propia actividad para fijar nuevos propósitos y mejorar. En el caso de Induser, una de las principales motivaciones para este 2018 es “perfeccionar nuestra maquinaria e innovar para seguir las tendencias y demandas de los mercados”. Para ello mantienen un contacto directo con sus clientes, que les dan las claves para optimizar sus productos. Un ejemplo de ello es la pesadora multicabezal, de gran precisión y rapidez, que recientemente ha ampliado su gama con una nueva serie para el pesaje automatizado de pimiento. “Hasta ahora se hacía de forma manual, pero nuestros sistemas permiten un

pesaje muy exacto con control de porcentaje de color”, explica Pedro Martínez, gerente de la empresa almeriense. Un importante avance, ya que agiliza enormemente el manipulado de confecciones tricolor, como es el caso de pimientos dulces y picantes.

Con una cuota comercial creciente en el mercado exterior (actualmente representa el 30% y su objetivo es alcanzar el 50% en los próximos 3 años), Induser apuesta por cultivar las relaciones internacionales.

“Este pasado año trabajamos mucho en Norteamérica y África, y nos permitió ampliar nuestra visión sobre el mercado mundial”. En este sentido también se muestran satisfechos con el feedback que le aporta la presencia en ferias internacionales.

A new year is beginning and, as is usual, companies are going over their own activities to set new goals and improve. In the case of Induser, one of the main motivations for 2018 is “to refine our machinery and to innovate in order to follow the trends and demands of the markets.” To do this, they keep in direct contact with their clients, who give them the keys for optimising their products. An example of this is the multi-head weighing machine, highly accurate and fast, the range of which has recently been extended with a new series for automatic pepper weighing. “Up to now, it was carried out manually, but our systems allow a very accurate weighing with colour percentage control,” explains Pedro Martínez, manager of the company from Almeria.

An important advance, since it streamlines the handling of the three-colour preparations, such as sweet and spicy peppers.

Along with the special weighing system, Induser has developed a new packaging machine for ‘zipper’ type bags, one of the global packaging trends. This format that is very popular in American supermarkets, is common in the threecoloured snack peppers segment and it is also very useful for packaging cherry tomatoes, grapes, cherries and many other products,

Martínez explains. “Zipper bags have many benefits: they are easy to transport and they help to keep the produce fresher, because consumers can close the bag again after opening it. We believe that they will become increasingly used in Europe.”

Another of its important solutions is the multiformat weighing machine that allows work with containers, cups or buckets, and that allow virtually instantaneous changes to be made. Just one response to the need for greater flexibility and efficiency that was detected in some of their clients.

With a growing market share on foreign markets (currently representing 30% and its goal is to reach 50% over the next 3 years), Induser is opting for cultivating international relations.

“Last year we worked a great deal in North America and Africa and this allowed us to extend our view of the world market.” On this point, they are also satisfied with the feedback provided by their presence at international trade fairs.

El gerente de la cooperativa, Antonio Domene, explica que “gracias a las diferentes fórmulas de comercialización en CASI, podemos acceder a interesantes líneas de trabajo que antes no era posible. El proyecto de venta en destino emprendido recientemente nos ha permitido formar parte de acuerdos que para CASI estaban cerrados en el pasado”. Sin embargo, el valor añadido por el agricultor les sigue aportando la diferenciación que necesitan en determinados mercados. “Queremos potenciar esta forma de trabajo, manteniendo nuestra referencia en subasta o ampliando nuestra oferta desde la comercialización”.

En este 2018/19 CASI está centrada en la reorganización de las distintas áreas de la cooperativa para optimizar los procesos e intentar mejorar los servicios ofrecidos.

Esto requiere una parte previa de análisis institucional para llegar a un diagnóstico que se traducirá en novedades en su oferta, aunque no de forma tan inmediata como les gustaría. “A corto plazo las principales novedades están en la creación y perfeccionamiento de las líneas de nuevos productos, incluyendo lanzamientos, pero siempre ampliando nuestro liderazgo en tomate”. Otro de los pilares de su estrategia es la diversificación.

res. La que nos ocupa comenzó con algo de retraso, lo que supuso un menor volumen de producción, y en enero y febrero se ha dado una mayor concentración. En materia de superficie, CASI está incrementando sus hectáreas. En líneas generales, la tendencia son las especialidades, “en algunos casos menos productivas, pero con interesantes nichos de mercado”. Cabe destacar el crecimiento de la línea eco con la marca CASI Organic, que contará con 118 Has en marzo entre tomate en ramo, cherry, pepino holandés, calabacín y sandía mini.

Presencia obligada CASI fue una de las primeras empresas almerienses en participar en la feria más importante de sector allá por el 2001 de la mano de Extenda. Un hito fundamental para el crecimiento en ventas de la cooperativa.

Diecisiete años han pasado y desde aquel modesto espacio compartido de 12m2 el crecimiento de CASI ha sido muy importante.

En cada edición cuentan con un gran stand (Hall 10.2 stand A06), ya que “la demanda de clientes que se acercan a nuestro espacio es muy grande y necesitamos una estructura

mayor”. Los ejes de comunicación serán la especialización en tomate, el lanzamiento de la línea de ecológico y la reciente apuesta por la diversificación de producto.

The different marketing approaches are increasing CASI’s quota pillars of its strategy is diversification.

The markets are in continuous evolution. At CASI they are aware of this and respond to the ever changing demands with total adaptation and great agility. The goal is to offer competitive produce that meets with the customers’ expectations and with maximum profitability for the associate. To do this, they maintain their commitment to provide value in the most efficient way on each line. The cooperative’s manager, Antonio Domene, explains that “thanks to the different marketing approaches at CASI, we can access interesting work lines that were not possible before. The recently undertaken project of sale at destination has allowed us to form part of agreements that in the past had been closed to CASI.” However, the added value for the farmers continues to provide the differentiation that they need on certain markets. “We want to promote this type of work, maintaining our reference at auction or extending our offer from the marketing.”

Each campaign is different to the previous ones. The one we are concerned with started off slightly late, which meant a lower production volume, with greater concentration in January and February. On the subject of surface area, CASI is increasing its hectares. In general, the trend lies in the cooperative’s specialities, “in some cases they are less productive, but with interesting market niches.” It is worth mentioning the growth of the eco line with the brand name CASI Organic, which will have 118 hectares in March for vine and cherry tomatoes, dutch cucumbers, courgettes and mini watermelons.

Required presence CASI was one of the first companies from Almeria to take part in the most important trade fair in the sector, back in 2001 with Extenda. That was an essential milestone for the cooperative’s growth in sales. Seventeen years have elapsed and from that modest shared space of 12 m2, CASI has undergone a very important growth. At each edition they have a large stand (Hall 10.2 stand A06), since “the demand by customers who approach our space is very high and we need a larger structure.” The communications will involve the cooperative’s specialisation in tomatoes, the launch of the ecological line and the recent commitment to produce diversification.

In 2018/19, CASI will concentrate on the reorganisation of different areas of the cooperative to optimise the processes and try to improve the services offered.

This requires a prior element of institutional analysis to reach a diagnosis that will be translated into new developments in its offer, although not as immediately as they would like. “In the short term, the main developments involve the creation and improving of the new produce lines, including launches, but always extending our leadership in tomatoes.” Another of the

‘Microgreens’, el Mediterráneo en version mini

La marca Sun&Vegs lleva los primeros brotes de vegetales comercializados vivos a la feria berlinesa

un&Vegs, marca especialista en productos frescos y saludables, expondrá sus últimas novedades durante Fruit Logística. Además de su tradicional surtido agrícola, la marca presentará los microgreens, primeros brotes de vegetales comercializados vivos.

Se trata de un producto que está ganando una creciente visibilidad en la cocina internacional por su distintivo olor, sabor y color, y su gran concentración de propiedades nutricionales.

Los microgreens de Sun&Vegs, que recogen la esencia del mediterráneo en miniatura, se presentan en cuatro variedades diferentes,

cada una con un color y sabor muy característico: brócoli, mostaza, rabanito y kale.

Para garantizar su máxima frescura y calidad, la marca ha desarrollado un innovador envase con una base de sustrato, lo que permite comercializar el producto vivo, alargando su vida útil y facilitando el consumo.

El cultivo de los microgreens de Sun&Vegs forma parte de los desarrollos que la compañía realiza en su Centro de Innovación Agronómica (CIAM) en Montserrat (Valencia), unas instalaciones que tienen como objetivo investigar procesos y métodos de cultivo más

eficientes y sostenibles, así como ensayar nuevas variedades agrícolas de tendencia en la alimentación actual, como las lechugas baby (brotes) o los propios microgreens.

Además de los nuevos cultivos, Sun&Vegs mostrará más de 30 referencias de hortalizas y vegetales, entre ellos diferentes tipos de calabacín, lechuga little gem, romana o rabanito.

La compañía cuenta con producción propia en campos que abarcan más de 5.000 hectáreas y están ubicados a orillas del Mediterráneo.

In addition to its traditional agricultural assortment, the brand will present its microgreens, the first live vegetable sprouts to be brought to the market.

This is a product that is becoming increasingly visible in international cooking due to its distinctive smell, flavour and colour and the important concentration of nutritional properties. Sun&Vegs’ microgreens, which bring together the essence of the Mediterranean in miniature, are presented in four different varieties, each one with a very characteristic colour and flavour: broccoli, mustard, radish and kale.

To guarantee maximum freshness and quality, the brand has developed an innovative packaging with a base of substrate, which allows the product to be marketed live, lengthening its shelf life and aiding consumption.

The cultivation of the microgreens by Sun&Vegs forms part of the developments that the company is carrying out at its Agronomical Innovation Centre (CIAM) in Montserrat (Valencia). These installations are being used to research more efficient and sustainable crop processes and methods, as well as testing new agricultural varieties in current trending foodstuffs, such as baby lettuces (sprouts) or the microgreens themselves.

a presente campaña supondrá un hito para la cooperativa granadina Los Gallombares gracias a la completa renovación de su maquinaria, para la que han realizado un importante desembolso de 2 millones de euros. En total se han adquirido 8 equipos de tecnología alemana que permitirán la automatización de los procesos incrementando los volúmenes en un 30%. “Pasamos de 80.000 kilos en 8 horas a 130.000”, explica el gerente, Francisco Delgado. Los nuevos equipos de manipulado cortan el producto, los clasifican y lo pesan de forma automatizada, respetando al máximo la calidad.

“Llevan integradas cámaras digitales que calibran y clasifican cada espárrago detectando cualquier defecto, por ejemplo, que sean más espigados de lo necesario”.

Este paso adelante permitirá dar respuesta al crecimiento productivo previsto para este 2018, cercano al 20%. “Hemos incrementado la superficie de cultivo en 400 hectáreas”. En total, ya disponen de 2.400 Has, todas en la provincia de Granada.

2 million euros in state-of-the-art technology This campaign will mean a milestone for the cooperative Los Gallombares, from Granada, thanks to the complete renewal of its machinery, for which they have made an important investment of 2 million euros. In total they have acquired 8 pieces of German equipment that will allow the automation of the processes, increasing volumes by 30%. “We will go from 80,000 kilos in 8 hours to 130,000,” explains the manager, Francisco Delgado. The new handling equipment cuts the produce, classifies it and weighs it automatically, completely respecting the quality. “The equipment has integrated digital cameras that calibrate and classify each asparagus spear, detecting any defect, for example if they are more gleaned than necessary.”

This step forward will allow the cooperative to respond to the around 20% productive growth foreseen for 2018. “We have increased the crop surface area by 400 hectares.” In total, they now have 2,400 hectares, all of them in the province of Granada.

España es el 7º productor mundial de verduras y hortalizas bio y tiene por delante un futuro muy positivo si supera algunas de sus carencias

E

n 2016 el sector ecológico español continuó el proceso de consolidación y desarrollo que ya se había observado en años anteriores y la superficie inscrita superó, por primera vez en la historia, la barrera de los 2 millones de hectáreas (+2,55% respecto a 2015), según datos del MAPAMA. Año tras año, el sector aumenta su apuesta por este sistema de cultivo sostenible y respetuoso con el medio ambiente llevado por la creciente demanda a nivel mundial, y las frutas y hortalizas siguen constituyendo una de las cinco principales

líneas de productos, tanto en volumen como en valor. En concreto, el grupo de hortalizas y tubérculos fue el que más creció en volumen con un +34,52% respecto a 2015, alcanzando las 294.590 toneladas y 282,81 millones de euros (16,56% del total del valor en origen).

También al alza estuvieron las fresas, con un incremento productivo del 32,25% y los cítricos, con un +7,27%.

En este contexto Andalucía sigue siendo líder en producción ecológica no sólo a nivel nacional, sino también europeo, tanto en su-

perficie (976.413,94 Has, de las que 8.576,76 son exclusivamente de hortalizas) como en número de operadores (14.489, la gran mayoría, 10.908, operadores agrícolas), si bien en 2016 la superficie decreció situándose por debajo del emblemático millón de hectáreas. Un descenso motivado porque la Administración pública dio de baja entre 2016 y principios de 2017 dos espacios naturales protegidos (el Parque Natural de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas y el Espacio Natural de Doñana), anteriormente certificados como superficie ecológica de aprovechamiento ganadero, explica el presidente de CAAE, Álvaro Barrera, a Fruit Today. Pese a todo, Andalucía supone un 42% de la superficie estatal, y “otras comunidades empiezan a tomar mayor peso relativo, en buena medida porque sus administraciones autonómicas han otorgado ayudas en 2016-2017. Así, Murcia ha crecido un 35%, Cataluña un 18%, Navarra un 13%...”.

Centrándonos en el segmento que nos ocupa, el de las frutas y hortalizas frescas, cabe destacar la buena marcha de los cultivos bajo plástico, que han “duplicado la superficie eco en solo un año”. Los productores buscan una mayor rentabilidad a través de este tipo de cultivos, con cotizaciones en algunos casos muy superiores a las de los mismos productos en convencional. Por ejemplo, según datos recogidos en el último trimestre de 2016 y primer trimestre de 2017 por el MAPAMA, el pimiento rojo presentaba

Ecológico Los productos eco ya representan el 1,69% de la totalidad de la cesta de la compra, con un gasto per cápita anual de 36,33 euros (+68,9% comparado con 2012), y más del 64% de los productos ecológicos que compramos pertenece a seis líneas de productos, la más importante de ellas la de hortalizas, patatas y derivados (18,5%). Con estos datos, el Ministerio aventura que “antes del 2020 el mercado interior podría superar la barrera del 2% del consumo total”.

un diferencial de precio convencional-eco del 251,4% en el punto de venta (1,39€/kg frente a 3,38€/kg); el tomate canario-pera, del 143%; y otros de menor volumen como la zanahoria, del 434,4%.

Sin embargo, no todo es de color de rosa en este segmento. En los últimos años la proliferación de nuevas empresas que se suman a este sector, tanto pequeñas y medianas, como grandes gigantes de tipo mixto (convencional y ecológico) que mueven volúmenes considerables, está provocando una desestabilización del sector. En ciertos puntos de la campaña se acumula producto provocando el descenso de las cotizaciones; las empresas especializadas se quejan de “distorsiones” en el mercado y de grandes fluctuaciones de precios en un segmento antes más estable; y además se han dado casos en los que algunos operadores “no hacen las cosas como deberían”. Ante todo esto, son muchos los productores que piden más controles a la Administración.

Carencia de vertebración El sector, que ya estaba atomizado, cuenta actualmente en España con 36.253 productores agrarios eco y 3.810 empresas industriales, y “carece de auténticos instrumentos o sistemas de representación, interlocución y vertebración, válidos y eficaces para el conjunto global del mismo”, según el MAPAMA. ¿Sería deseable la creación de una Organización Interprofesional Agroalimentaria (OIA) de la producción ecológica española? Según un estudio del MAPAMA, indudablemente sí, aunque a corto plazo no parece posible. Quizá habría que fijarse en organizaciones de otros países que, aunque no siguen la estructura de las OIA, cuentan con instrumentos “vertebradores eficaces y potentes” como la Agence BIO en Francia o BÖLW en Alemania. ¿Consumo interno del 2% en 2020?

Uno de los hitos a destacar en el análisis del comportamiento del Sector de la Producción Ecológica de España en 2016 es el proceso de fuerte crecimiento del consumo interno, que alcanzó los 1.685,5 millones de euros (+12,51%), y fue muy superior al experimentado por el consumo global y general de alimentos y bebidas en España en 2016 respecto a 2015 (0,7% en el conjunto global del consumo alimentario español), desglosa el MAPAMA. 26 Fruittoday

Fuera de nuestras fronteras, el consumo mundial lleva un ritmo mucho más intenso, pasando de 11.500 millones de euros en 2011 a más de 88.000 millones en 2016, y los analistas estiman que la curva de crecimiento se mantendrá en años venideros, acaparando una mayor cuota en los mercados tradicionales y sumando nuevos mercados emergentes, por lo que en el horizonte 2025/2026 el mercado ecológico podría suponer hasta 175.000 millones de euros. Solo en la UE, uno de los mercados con más arraigo en el ecológico, el valor asciende a los 30.000 millones (sin olvidar su peso productivo con 12.000.000 Has y 270.000 explotaciones ecológicas). En el pódium de los mayores consumidores ‘verdes” están Suiza (que ha incrementado el consumo bio un 47,69% entre 2012 y 2015), Dinamarca y Suecia (88,30%).

Con estas cifras, al presidente del CAAE no le cabe duda de que el futuro de los productores de ecológico de frutas y hortalizas en España se perfila “realmente positivo. Nuestro mercado interno es cada vez mayor y el externo crece a pasos agigantados, lo que favorece a la exportación”. Una eficaz estrategia para posicionar nuestros productos es “centrarnos en la producción de variedades que, por nuestras condiciones climáticas, puedan cosecharse antes que en otros países.

Y a la misma vez se debe hacer un esfuerzo para que los consumidores apuesten decididamente por el producto nacional siempre que se oferte junto a otros foráneos. En países como Suiza, por ejemplo, cuando en los mercados hay cualquier hortaliza producida allí, los consumidores optan por ella frente a otras de fuera, aunque el precio sea notablemente más barato”.

Fuerza exportadora El alto grado de internacionalización es uno de los principales valores de la producción ecológica española. El año pasado las ventas al exterior crecieron un 14,5% y rondaron los 891 millones de euros en su conjunto (el 25,5% eran hortalizas, patatas y legumbres). Si tomamos como referencia el año 2011, la curva de crecimiento es aún mayor, con un +73,14%. Además, en 2016 la exportación española eco supuso el 5,62% del total de ventas eco a nivel mundial. La especialización del sector es una de las claves de esta positiva evolución que la coloca en los primeros puestos de varios ránkings dentro de esta categoría.

Para muestra, estas cifras del MAPAMA: Es el 4º mayor exportador mundial de productos ecológicos (6,2% de las exportaciones mundiales, solo por detrás de EEUU, Italia y Países Bajos) Ocupa la 4ª posición en cuanto a disponibilidad de superficie ecológica inscrita (en torno al 3,9% mundial) y la 3ª con más superficie de cultivo dedicado a producción eco (el 7,8% frente a un 1,1% de promedio mundial).

Es el 4º país dentro de los grandes productores ecológicos, por número de productores agrarios ecológicos (sólo por detrás de México, Turquía e Italia).

Y desglosando los productos: España ocupa el 2º puesto mundial por su capacidad de producción de cítricos ecológicos solo por detrás de Italia (en 2016 podría haber superado el 15% de toda la superficie ecológica mundial dedicada a este cultivo).

Ostenta el 7º puesto mundial por capacidad productiva de verduras y hortalizas ecológicas frescas, con una superficie que en 2015 representaba el 3,80% de toda la extensión mundial de verduras y hortalizas eco.

Es 10º en el ranking de países productores de frutas de clima templado (manzanas, peras, ciruelas, melocotones, cerezas, etc.). En 2015 representaba el 1,66% de toda la superficie ecológica mundial dedicada a este cultivo.

Nueva normativa

La Asociación Española de Normalización (UNE) ha aprobado tres nuevas normas de insumos para la agricultura ecológica con el fin de armonizar la certificación de fertilizantes y fitosanitarios en el sector eco: UNE 142500, sobre productos fertilizantes, enmiendas y sustratos de cultivo; UNE 315500, sobre productos para la gestión de plagas y enfermedades vegetales; y UNE 66500. La puesta en marcha de estos textos, desarrollados por grupos de trabajo impulsados por el MAPAMA con la participación y el consenso de entidades del sector como el CAAE, supone “todo un acierto”, asegura el presidente de CAAE, Álvaro Barrera. “Regular todos los aspectos ligados a los insumos implica coherencia y garantía de cara a todo el proceso de producción ecológica de un producto, ya que cualquier irregularidad relacionada con el uso de fertilizantes o fitosanitarios usados en una finca podría derivar en importantes perjuicios para el agricultor. Además, todas las garantías adheridas al sistema productivo se traducen en garantías también para el consumidor final y, por supuesto, en ventajas para los productores nacionales de insumos, que con estas normas podrán mostrarse al mercado internacional con un valor añadido extra que, sin duda les abrirán muchas puertas”.

CAAE ya certifica productos eco de países terceros La entidad certificadora CAAE es líder en Europa. Cuenta con el mayor número de operadores y superficie en ecológico, superando con creces el millón de hectáreas certificadas, casi 60.000 de frutas y hortalizas. Desde el pasado mes de mayo trabaja con sede en Lima (Perú) y recientemente la Comisión Europea le ha autorizado a aplicar su norma de certificación a productos ecológicos que llegan a Europa desde terceros países, una medida que les permitirá seguir avanzando en su objetivo de convertirse en referente a nivel mundial, particularmente en los países de habla hispana y en otros mercados emergentes como el asiático. La autorización ha sido “recibida con entusiasmo” por la certificadora, que ya puede “aplicar la norma CAAE en países terceros, lo que se traduce en que los productos certificados por CAAE en Bolivia, Ecuador, México, Marruecos, Perú y Turquía llegarán a Europa con el sello de la UE”, detalla el presidente de CAAE, Álvaro Barrera.

Spain is the 7th producer worldwide of bio fruit and vegetables and it has a very positive future ahead if it manages to overcome some of its shortcomings In 2016, the Spanish ecological sector continued with the consolidation and development process observed in previous years, and the surface area registered exceeded, for the first time ever, the barrier of 2 million hectares (+2.55% compared to 2015), according to data from MAPAMA. Year after year, the sector increases its commitment to this sustainable, environmentallyfriendly cultivation system, carried along by the growing demand in the world, and fruit and vegetables continue to be one of the five main lines of products, both in volume and in value. Specifically, the group of vegetables and root vegetables was the one that grew the most in volume with +34,52% compared to 2015, reaching 294,590 tonnes and 282.81 million euros (16.56% of the total value at source). Strawberries were also on the rise, with a production increase of 32.25%, along with citrus fruits, with +7.27%.

Within this context, Andalusia continues to be the leader in ecological production, not only nationally, but also on a European level, both in surface area (976,413.94 hectares, of which 8,576.76 are exclusively for vegetables) and in the number of operators (14,489 - most of which, 10,908, are agricultural operators), although in 2016 the surface area decreased, dropping below the emblematic one million hectares. A drop caused by the Public Administration removing two protected natural spaces (the Natural Park of Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas, and the Natural Space of Doñana) from the list previously certified as ecological surface area for livestock development between 2016 and the beginning of 2017, the chairman of CAAE, Álvaro Barrera, explained to Fruit Today. In spite of everything, Andalusia makes up 42% of the state surface area and “other communities are starting to take on relatively greater importance; to a large extent, because their regional governments have granted aid to producers in 2016-2017. Therefore, Murcia has grown by 35%, Catalonia by 18% and Navarre by 13%...”

Concentrating on the segment we are concerned with, that of fresh fruit and vegetables, it is worth mentioning the good progress of crops under plastic cover, which have “doubled the eco surface area in just one year”. Producers are seeking greater profitability through this type of crops, with prices in some cases that are much higher than those for the same produce when grown conventionally. For example, according to data collected during the last quarter of 2016 and the first quarter of 2017 by MAPAMA, red peppers represented a conventional-eco price differential of 251.4% at the point of sale (1.39€/kg compared to 3.38€/kg); Canary/pear tomatoes, of 143%; and others with less volume, such as carrots, of 434.4%.

However, not everything in this garden is rosy. In recent years, the proliferation of new companies that are joining this sector, both small and medium-sized, and combined giants (conventional and ecological) that move considerable volumes, is causing a destabilisation in the sector. Produce accumulates at certain times of the campaign, causing a drop in prices; specialised companies complain of “distortions” in the market and important price fluctuations in a segment that was previously more stable; and there also have been cases where some operators “are not doing things the way they should be done.” In view of all this, many producers are asking the Administration for more controls.

Lack of structuring The sector, which was already fragmented, currently has in Spain 36,253 eco agricultural producers and 2,810 industrial companies, and it “lacks authentic representation, dialogue and structuring instruments or systems, which are valid and efficient for the sector as a whole,” according to MAPAMA. Would the creation of an Interprofessional Agrifood Organisation (IAO) for Spanish ecological production be a good idea? According to a study by MAPAMA, without any doubt, although in the short term this would not seem feasible.

Perhaps we should look at organisations from other countries which, although they do not follow the structure of IAOs, they have instruments that are “efficiently and powerfully structured,” such as the Agence BIO in France or BÖLW in Germany.

2% internal consumption in 2020?

One of the milestones to emphasise in the analysis of the Spanish Ecological Production Sector in 2016 is the important growth process of internal consumption, which reached 1,685.5 million euros (+12.51%), and was much higher than that experienced by the overall and general consumption of food and drink in Spain in 2016 compared to 2015 (0.7% in the overall Spanish food consumption as a whole), as detailed by MAPAMA. Eco products already represent 1.69% of the total shopping basket, with an annual cost expenditure of 36.33 euros (+68.9% compared with 2012), and over 64% of the ecological products that we buy belong to six product lines, the most important one of them being that of vegetables, potatoes and derivatives (18.5%). With this information, the Ministry ventures that “before 2020 the home market could pass the 2% barrier of total consumption.”

Outside our borders, world consumption is rising at a much faster rate, going from 11,500 million euros in 2011 to over 88,000 million in 2016. And analysts estimate that the growth curve will be maintained in the years to come, taking over a larger share on the traditional markets and adding new emerging markets; therefore, on the 2025/2026 horizon, the ecological market could mean up to 175,000 million euros. In the EU alone, one of the most traditional markets of ecological produce, the value rises to 30,000 million (without forgetting its production weight with 12,000,000 Hectares and 270,000 ecological farms). On the podium of largest ‘green’ consumers are Switzerland (which increased bio consumption by 47.69% between 2012 and 2015), Denmark and Sweden (88.30%).

With these figures, the chairman of the CAAE has no doubt that the future of ecological fruit and vegetable producers in Spain is shaping up to be “really positive. Our home market is getting larger and larger and the foreign market is growing in leaps and bounds, which encourages exports.” An efficient strategy for positioning our products is “to concentrate on the production of varieties which, due to our weather conditions, can be harvested before they can in other countries. And at the same time, an effort must be made to ensure that consumers make a decisive commitment to national produce when offered alongside foreign products. In countries such as Switzerland, for example, when there is any home-produced vegetable on the market, the consumers opt for this one as opposed to others from abroad, even when the price is appreciably cheaper.”

Export strength The high level of internationalisation is one of the main values of Spanish ecological production. Last year, foreign sales grew by 14.5% and reached a figure of around 891 million euros as a whole (25.5% were vegetables, potatoes and pulses). It holds the 4th position regarding availability of registered ecological surface area (around 3.9% worldwide) and the 3rd with most surface area of crops devoted to eco production (7.8% as opposed to 1.1% on average worldwide).

It is the 4th country within the large ecological producers, according to number of ecological agricultural producers (only behind Mexico, Turkey and Italy).

And breaking it down by products: Spain holds the 2nd place worldwide for its ecological citrus fruit production capacity, only behind Italy (in 2016 it could have exceeded 15% of the total ecological surface area devoted to this crop).

It holds the 7th position worldwide for production capacity of fresh ecological vegetables, with a surface area that in 2015 represented 3.80% of the entire worldwide extension of eco vegetables.

It is 10th in the ranking of producing countries of temperate climate fruit (apples, pears, plums, peaches, cherries, etc). In 2015 it represented 1.66% of the total ecological surface area worldwide devoted to this crop.

New legislation The Spanish Standardisation Association (UNE) has passed three new input standards for ecological farming in order to bring the fertilizer and plant protection products in the eco sector into line: UNE 142500, on fertilising products, amendments and growing media; UNE 315500, on products for pest and vegetable disease management; and UNE 66500. The launch of these texts, developed by work groups promoted by MAPAMA with the participation and consensus of organisations from the sector such as the CAAE, is “a complete success,” the chairman of CAAE, Álvaro Barrera states. “Regulating all the aspects linked to the supplies implies coherence and guarantees in the face of the entire ecological production process of a product, since any irregularity related to the use of fertilisers or plant protection products used on a farm could derive in serious damages for the farmer. Additionally, all the guarantees attached to the production system are also translated into guarantees for the end consumers and obviously, in advantages for the national supplies producers, as these standards will be able to show the international market their extra added value which, without any doubt will open up many doors for them.”

CAAE already certifies eco products from third countries CAAE, the certifying organisation is a leader in Europe. It has the largest number of operators and surface area in ecological produce, easily exceeding a million certified hectares, almost 60,000 of fruit and vegetables. Since last May, they have been working from their headquarters in Lima (Peru), and recently the European Commission authorised the company to apply their certification standard to ecological products that reach Europe from third countries. This step will allow them to continue moving forward towards their goal of becoming a worldwide reference, particularly in Spanish-speaking countries, and on other emerging markets such as Asia. This authorisation has been “received enthusiastically” by the certifying company, which now can “apply the CAAE standard in third countries, which is translated into the fact that products certified by CAAE in Bolivia, Ecuador, Mexico, Morocco, Peru and Turkey will reach Europe with the EU stamp,” states the chairman of CAAE, Álvaro Barrera.

a demanda de productos ecológicos sigue al alza, y grandes empresas como Unica Fresh han adaptado su oferta para abastecer a la clientela.

El año pasado la comercialización en este segmento supuso aproximadamente el 10% del total de negocio de la firma, con 17 millones de kilos de frutas y hortalizas, una cifra que irá en aumento en la presente campaña y que crecerá “de forma importante” en los próximos años, asegura Diego Calderón, Responsable de desarrollo de Negocio de Unica. A diferencia de lo que se escucha en algunas empresas del sector, Calderón afirma que “no hay sobreoferta”. Tanto es así que “en ciertos momentos nos suele faltar producto para atender toda la demanda de hortofrutícolas eco”. Y es que los retailers demandan “fiabilidad y volumen”, y por ello están tendiendo a focalizar sus compras en empresas como Unica Fresh.

Para poder abastecerlos, la firma almeriense está reorientando su estrategia y ha decidido “reducir la gama y centrarse en 32 Fruittoday

determinados productos para ofrecer más volumen”. En este sentido cobra fuerza el pepino, con 12 meses de ventas y el mayor peso en el segmento eco. La reciente adhesión de Frutas Segura y García como socio de la

Esta operación engrosará nuevas referencias a su gama (zanahoria, boniato, calabacín blanco, patata ). In order to be able to supply them, the company from Almeria is redirecting its strategy and has decided “to reduce the range and concentrate on certain produce to be able to offer more volume.” Accordingly, cucumbers are taking on greater importance, with 12 months of sales and a greater weight in the eco segment. The recent incorporation of Frutas Segura y García as a member of the Unica Group cooperative has made

the growth of this reference possible.

More produce, more health Unica continues its expansion process and last October it informed of the addition of a cooperative from Cadiz, Virgen del Rocío, as a new member. This operation will bring new references to its range (carrot, sweet potato, white courgette, potato…). Another of the company’s new developments is its line of healthy snacks: Buen Oh!, based on dehydrated fruit (apple, pineapple, sweet pepper and tomato).

These snacks were presented at Fruit Attraction and they will have a prominent position on the stand at Fruit Logistica (Hall 18 A-05).

In line with its philosophy of producing and marketing fruit and vegetables that provide health to consumers, Unica has presented its new initiative to promote good eating habits in society, called ‘El Plato Saludable’ or ‘The Healthy Eating Plate’ (based on Harvard University’s project ‘The Healthy Eating Plate’). A proposal of ten menus where fresh vegetables are the main ingredients accompanied by healthy proteins and wholemeal cereals. All of them will be served at the restaurant in the Edificio Pitágoras del PITA, where its head offices are located.

a calidez estival se alargó hasta mitad de noviembre, alargando los cultivos en las zonas altas de sierra y retrasando unas semanas las plantaciones de cotas más bajas. El resultado se ha hecho notar en dos de las zonas más importantes para el tomate ecológico, Níjar y Motril, donde la campaña no ha entrado en plena producción hasta prácticamente la primera semana de enero, cuando lo normal es que lo haga en noviembre. No obstante, este retraso ha venido bien porque al alargarse las producciones en Centroeuropa, no se ha acumulado producto y ha salido de forma escalonada. Así lo confirma David Caparrós, gerente de Balcón de Níjar. La firma, especializada en la producción de cherry ecológico, sigue creciendo y prevé incrementar un 5% su volumen y superficie, alcanzando las 48 Has y los 3,2 millones de kg en este 2017/18. Se reitera así su curva ascendente tras un ejercicio que, aunque “podía haber sido excelente”, se quedó en “bueno” porque

It is repeating its upward curve after a year where, although “it could have been excellent,” it was just “good” because of the bad summer: it was “the worst summer of the last four years, in production and prices,” but the annual result was balanced out with +20-25% in prices and -20% in production.

This year, the company will continue with its commitment to diversification, with a larger volume of vine tomatoes (8 hectares in total), although the main part of its production continues to be the cherry tomato (85% of the total). It leads the round segment, which is tending to lose place in favour of pear tomatoes (20%). “It is a generalised trend that we started seeing a few years ago, due to the greater flavour and quality that the pear cherry tomato

varieties usually have.” It is also increasing its volume of mini watermelons and slightly in peas, a rotation crop that complements its tomato offer and that we will be able to see on the company’s stand at Fruit Logistica, located in Hall 18 B-03b.

Holland continues to grow Balcón de Níjar is a company with a clear export vocation and most of its market share goes to Central European and Scandinavian countries. “Sales in Germany continue to grow. France has stabilised in bio and the Scandinavian countries and Holland are on the rise, mainly Holland, even more than Germany, at least in our case,”Caparrós states. He also underscores an aspect to be taken into account: “with the entrance of the mixed groups, the ‘eco’ market has become very distorted. It is complicated to forecast what is going to happen each week and we are seeing some important fluctuations in prices, which has not happened before in ecological produce.” For some time now, there have been auctions where bio fruit and vegetables are marketed, but the large volume taken by important retail stores or their purchasing centres mean they usually operate directly with the companies and not with the auctions. In Spain, he asserts that “large chains such as Alcampo or Carrefour are consuming more and more eco.” And low-cost stores such as Aldi, Lidl and others are encouraging the prices to become more reasonable for consumers, motivating consumption. “Previously, the chains tripled the price of eco compared to conventional produce.”

Se incrementa también en su gama el volumen de sandía mini y algo la de guisante, cultivos de rotación que complementan su oferta de tomate y que podremos ver en su stand de Fruit Logistica, ubicado en el Pabellón 18 B-03b.

Una única marca ‘eco’

La española Bio Montaña s.l. y otras dos empresas de Best Fresh Group crean una trademark para unir esfuerzos en la comercialización de sus productos

a unión hace la fuerza. Puede sonar a frase manida, pero sigue teniendo la misma vigencia de siempre, máxime cuando hablamos de un mercado como el ecológico, donde el boom de la oferta amenaza la estabilidad de precios que antes le era inherente.

Por este motivo, tres de las empresas de Best Fresh Group han decidido aliarse y vender sus productos de forma conjunta bajo una misma marca o trademark, que será introducida el mes que viene. Se trata de la granadina Bio Montaña, la alemana Biofrucht Niederrhein y BioWorld en Holanda. Job van den Berg, gerente de la primera, liderará el conglomerado ejerciendo de director general. En una entrevista con Fruit Today, 36 Fruittoday

Van den Berg ha detallado algunas de las bases sobre las que se asienta este proyecto.

“Nuestra intención es unificar el trabajo para que haya un único punto de contacto con los proveedores y que estos puedan tener acceso directo a las tres empresas y sus gamas de productos de una forma más ágil y sencilla”. Y es que, hoy más que nunca, en el sector ecológico la clave del éxito es la organización y el trabajo conjunto con agricultores y proveedores. “El mercado bio ha cambiado: pasamos de tener mucha demanda a mucha oferta. Sigue siendo rentable pero ahora prima más la relación con agricultores y clientes, y creemos que en ese sentido la fidelidad es fundamental, porque por un lado necesitamos saber que

podemos contar con ciertos volúmenes y la calidad que exigimos, y por otro lado los supermercados quieren saber el origen de los productos”.

La nueva filosofía se presentará en el stand de Best Fresh Group en Fruit Logistica (Pabellón 3.2 C-26). En un primer momento aglutinará algunos de los productos principales de las tres empresas (pepino, judía, tomate y pimiento), y posteriormente no descartan sumar nuevas referencias.

Sobre Bio Montaña S.L. La filial española de Best Fresh Group comenzó su andadura en 2015 y desde entonces ha crecido de forma exponencial (este año esperan un crecimiento de un 15-20%).

Las hortalizas constituyen el grueso de su volumen comercial, si bien están reorien-

tando su estrategia para diferenciarse, dotando de un mayor peso a las frutas exóticas. “Ahora mismo trabajamos mucho la importación de jengibre, cúrcuma y granadilla. Nuestras importaciones de Sudamérica están creciendo”.

This could sound like a cliché, but it still rings as true as ever, particularly when we are talking about a market such as the ecological one, where the boom in the offer is threatening price stability, something that previously was intrinsic. For this reason, three of the companies in the Best Fresh Group have decided to become allies and sell their products jointly under the same brand name or trademark, which will be presented next month. We are talking about the company from Granada, Bio Montaña, the German company, Biofrucht Niederrhein and BioWorld in Holland. Job van den Berg, manager of the first company, will lead the conglomerate, working as the general manager.

In an interview with Fruit Today, Van den Berg described some of the foundations on which this project is based. “Our intention is to unify the work to make a single contact point with the suppliers and to ensure that they have direct access to the three companies and their product ranges in an easier and more flexible way.” And the fact is that, today more than ever before, in the ecological sector the key to success is organisation and joint work with farmers and suppliers. “The bio market has changed: we have gone from having a great deal of demand to having a great deal of supply.

It continues to be profitable, but now the relations with the farmers and customers are more important. We also believe that loyalty is essential on this point, because on the one hand, we need to know that we are going to be able to rely on certain volumes and the quality that we demand and on the other hand, the supermarkets want to know the source of the produce.”

The new philosophy will be presented on the Best Fresh Group’s stand at Fruit Logistica (Hall 3.2 C-26). To begin with, it will bring together some of the main products from the three companies (cucumbers, beans, tomatoes and peppers) and later on, new references could well be added.

Regarding Bio Montaña S.L. The Spanish subsidiary of the Best Fresh Group started out in 2015 and since then it has grown exponentially (this year they expect a growth of around 15-20%). Vegetables make up the main part of its business volume, although they are redirecting the strategy to become differentiated, giving greater importance to exotic fruit. “Now we are working hard on importing ginger, turmeric and passion fruit.

a diversificación se ha convertido en la estrategia principal de BioProcam. La empresa motrileña ha ido sumando a su amplia gama (en la que destacan el aguacate Hass, pepino y tomate rama y tipo Raf), nuevos productos como la calabaza, los cítricos, el kaki (en introducción este año gracias a la colaboración con agricultores de Huelva), y en febrero hará lo propio con la col picuda, un producto con el que están poniendo en práctica el policultivo, plantándolo con pepino. “Ambos se complementan bien y que estén en un mismo espacio nos permite tener una línea comercial secundaria”, ya que, de momento, producirán col en volúmenes reducidos para completar la oferta a clientes interesados en palés mixtos, explica el gerente Fernando Martín.

They have realised that belonging to an OPFH allows them access to a great deal of aid. ”On an infrastructural level, they recently changed the image of their façade and have replaced the lighting on the warehouse with LEDs, an alternative in line with the sustainability promoted by the company’s produce.

El ‘eco’ pisará el acelerador en España HaciendasBio está incrementando sus volúmenes y duplicará la plantilla para tener capacidad frente al crecimiento previsto de la demanda eco

as grandes cadenas apuestan por un producto cuando detectan el crecimiento de la demanda por parte los consumidores, y cada día es más frecuente ver nuevas frutas y hortalizas ‘bio’ en los lineales de cualquier supermercado.

Según la consultora Everis, el sector ecológico podría generar 12.182 millones de euros en 2020, lo que supondría un crecimiento del 26% anual. En medio de este escenario, la distribución está ampliando la variedad de su surtido y alarga la estacionalidad de los productos, una tarea nada fácil en esta categoría.

HaciendasBio, referente en agricultura ecológica por su amplia gama y los volúmenes que ofrece, crece al ritmo de la demanda.

El año pasado alcanzaron las 15.000 Tn de producción propia y para 2018 esperan llegar a las 32.000 Tn gracias a la ampliación de superficie (han sumado 290 Has de cultivo, la última finca en Sevilla) y al nuevo centro de manipulado y envasado (10.500 metros construidos) que se ubicará en el Parque Ecológico que construye la empresa. Esta nueva sede entrará en funcionamiento durante el segundo trimestre de este año, y en sus 400 Has de terreno acogerá la parte corporativa e industrial de la empresa, un centro de investigación, una escuela Waldorf y una central energética. Para ponerla en marcha se ha realizado una inversión de 11 millones de euros.

This new centre will start operating during the second quarter of this year and its 400 hectares will house the corporate and industrial part of the company, a research centre, a Waldorf school and

an energy plant. They have made an investment of 11 million euros to make it into a reality.

HaciendasBio is a multi-produce company with different fruits, asparagus, grapes and vegetables.

All of them are marketed in Spain under a single brand name, Biovivo, which they presented at the last edition of Fruit Attraction. “Biovivo is a multireference brand name that arises from concern for health and the environment, flavour and texture, with the need to reach every corner of Spain with a wide range, striving to remove any doubts about the guarantee and quality of a category that until recently did not have a brand name. We offer ecological fruit and vegetables, available to everyone.” Under the umbrella of Biovivo there are over 40 categories of fruit and vegetables, representing 95% of the varieties consumed on the Spanish market.

espués de abordar el exigente mercado suizo con éxito, la firma palmera ha empezado a comercializar su producto en Francia de la mano de Biocoop, empresa líder en distribución de alimentos ecológicos en el país vecino. El reto es, por lo tanto doble, cautivar al cliente francés con el sabor de Canarias y además, hacerlo con un producto ecológico.

Ya durante la primera semana de 2018, el volumen de carga se duplicó debido a la buena acogida que ha tenido el producto.

Biocoop, que cuenta con una red de 431 tiendas, es una compañía de distribución con una filosofía muy clara, la de fomentar el cultivo ecológico y hacerlo de una forma justa, de tal manera que, primero el agricultor y después todos los demás actores que forman parte de la cadena perciban una remuneración correcta por su trabajo. Su objetivo es construir un proyecto común sostenible en el tiempo.

La importancia del origen

El origen del producto ha sido importante para Biocoop a la hora de realizar su apuesta comercial, pero hay otros factores que determinan la elección: la correcta certificación, el control de los tratamientos en campo, el trabajo artesanal, el cuidado en la manipulación del producto, el compromiso con la economía local... A parte, existe otro factor clave como es la proximidad del lugar de producción al punto de consumo, lo que minimiza la huella de carbono.

“Este es un punto que cada vez cobrará mayor importancia comercial en el futuro ya que somos el lugar de producción más cercano de plátano que tiene Europa continental, con un abastecimiento de producto ininterrumpido durante todas las semanas del año,” explican fuentes de la empresa canaria.

Continuar con la expansión en el mercado europeo ha favorecido que el volumen de ventas de Europlátano alcanzará las 58.000 toneladas durante 2017.

During the first week of 2018, the loading volume had already doubled due to the produce’s good reception.

Biocoop, which has a network of 421 shops, is a distribution company with a very clear philosophy: promoting ecological crops and doing this fairly, in such a way that, first the farmer and then all other agents that form part of the chain receive a correct payment for their work. Its aim is to build a common sustainable project over time.

The importance of the source The source of the produce has been important for Biocoop when making their commercial commitment, but there are other factors that determine the choice: the correct certification, the control of the treatments in the fields, the traditional work by hand, the care in the handling of the produce, the commitment to the local economy… Apart from all this, there is another key factor, such as the proximity of the production place to the point of consumption, minimising the carbon footprint.

“This aspect is taking on increasing commercial importance, since we are the closest banana production area that Continental Europe has, with a produce supply that is non-stop every week of the year,” sources from the company from the Canary Islands explain.

Continuing with the expansion on the European market has encouraged the fact that Europlátano’s sales volume will reach 58,000 tonnes in 2017.

una de las áreas en las que más está creciendo es la producción de plántulas e injertos ecológicos, que copa entre un 30-40% del total de su producción con el pepino y el tomate como productos principales. En este sentido, Luis Flores, director de marketing de la empresa, explica que su intención es “ser punta de lanza” en el cultivo de planta ecológica. Para ello imprimen su ritmo de crecimiento al que les marca la demanda de los clientes. “Prevemos que a corto plazo siga al alza debido al número de hectáreas de transición que tenemos de convencional a ecológico. Aun así, vamos con pies de plomo porque somos conscientes de los recientes estudios que ponen de manifiesto que los costes de producción empiezan a ser muy superiores a los de convencional”.

Even so, we are treading carefully because we are aware of the recent studies showing that the production costs are beginning to be much greater than for conventional production.”

10% more in watermelon As has become usual in recent years, the Cristalplant Group foresees increasing the production figure for watermelon plants by around 10% (last year they reached 7 million plants). At the moment, the campaign is developing steadily, within some “stable parameters, although this year we are slightly conditioned by the rainfall.”

Regarding the areas of influence, the Cristalplant Group produces plants in the East coast area, to serve CastillaLa Mancha, Palomares, Murcia, Seville and the Valencian Community.

El segmento ecológico es ‘clave’ en el crecimiento de la cadena, que ha desarrollado un nuevo concepto comercial en España, su supermercado urbano Para nosotros son un eje clave de crecimiento. Los productos frescos tienen un peso importante en la venta de nuestro supermercado Carrefour Bio y nuestros clientes valoran mucho su variedad y frescura.

En 2017 pusieron en marcha el primer Carrefour Bio en Fuencarral, ¿qué acogida está teniendo en estos primeros meses?

Estamos muy satisfechos con la respuesta del consumidor; conocía ya nuestra extensa propuesta comercial bio en el formato hipermercado y han visto como una extensión de esta política la creación de ‘Carrefour Bio’.

Los consumidores valoran muy positivamente el contar con un establecimiento dedicado en exclusiva a los productos que proceden de la agricultura y ganadería ecológica.

egún el MAPAMA, el mercado español de productos ecológicos (frescos y no frescos) fue de 1.686 M€ en 2016, creciendo un 12% comparado con el año anterior. Un dato al que han contribuido grandes superficies como Carrefour, a través de una cada vez mayor apuesta por la comercialización de estos productos con lineales específicos en sus hipermercados y, desde el pasado mes de abril, con la apertura

del primer supermercado con productos exclusivamente bio. Hablamos con los responsables del Departamento de Productos Ecológicos para conocer su estrategia.

Llevan 12 años comercializando productos ‘eco’ en España y Francia. ¿Qué futuro os aguarda en términos de crecimiento en los próximos años?

¿Cuál es la filosofía sobre la que se asienta este modelo?

Se trata de un nuevo concepto comercial en España. Carrefour Bio es un supermercado urbano dedicado a los productos que proceden de la agricultura y ganadería ecológicas.

Entre los artículos que se comercializan figuran las principales marcas especializadas de Bio y el supermercado ofrece también los productos de las marcas propias de la cadena, Carrefour Bio y Ecoplanet. Ecológico ¿Qué perfil tiene el cliente de Carrefour Bio y qué le ofrecen?

El espacio se sitúa a la vanguardia de las nuevas tendencias de consumo y está concebido para responder a las necesidades de un cliente urbano que demanda hacer una compra completa con productos de agricultura y ganadería ecológica: frutería, carnicería, pescadería, alimentación envasada, productos refrigerados y congelados, platos para tomar en el momento, sándwiches... Además, dispone de surtido vegano y productos sin gluten. Para atender este establecimiento, la compañía cuenta con personal cualificado, con formación en ingeniería agrónoma, nutrición, dietética y alimentación… y muchos de ellos tienen experiencia previa en el sector ecológico. Entre las novedades ofrecidas se encuentra la de poder comprar a granel, no sólo la fruta y verdura (para la que disponemos de sobres de papel reciclables), sino productos de alimentación como quinoa, copos de avena o couscous integral, de modo que el cliente pueda comprar sólo la cantidad que necesite, limitando el embalaje al mínimo. Para facilitar la compra, se ha desarrollado señalización destacando los productos para dietas específicas, intolerancias, así como alimentación vegana. ¿Cómo contribuyen al desarrollo del consumo ‘eco’?

A día de hoy, la distribución de productos ecológicos está muy atomizada en España. Durante mucho tiempo estos productos solo se encontraban en pequeñas herboristerías y el surtido disponible era muy limitado, pero en estos últimos años se ha desarrollado el concepto de supermercado ecológico donde se puede encontrar de todo y hacer la cesta completa, al igual que en los supermercados convencionales. Con el desarrollo de nuestra tienda Bio queremos incrementar el acceso a este tipo de productos, democratizar su consumo y facilitar la compra. Los clientes eligen esta tienda por proximidad, surtido y experiencia de compra y la frecuentan varias veces a la semana.

Socomo nace en 1987 con el objetivo de exportar cítricos. En estos 30 años, la filial de Carrefour se ha transformado en una empresa que emplea a más de 100 colaboradores directos y que ha comercializado 8.700 millones de kilos de fruta y verdura, de los que 3.600 millones se han vendido en mercados internacionales.

Entre las compras realizadas durante estos años destacan los más de 3.200 millones de kilos de productos de la Comunidad Valenciana como la naranja o la clementina; los 1.800 millones de kilos de tomate o sandía en Andalucía; los 1.200 millones de kilos de productos de la huerta murciana como lechuga o limón; o los más de 640 millones de kilos de manzanas y nectarinas procedentes de Cataluña, por citar algunos ejemplos.

We talked to those in charge of the Ecological Products Department to discover their strategy.

You have been marketing ‘eco’ products in Spain and France for the past 12 years. What does the future hold for you in terms of growth over the next few years?

For us, these products are a key growth factor. Fresh produce is very important in the sales of our Carrefour Bio supermarket and our customers put great value on the variety and freshness.

In 2017 you started up the first Carrefour Bio in Fuencarral. How has it been received during these first months?

We are very satisfied with the consumers’ response; they already know about our extensive bio sales proposals in the hypermarket format and they saw the creation of ‘Carrefour Bio’ as an extension of this policy. Consumers attach a very positive value to having an establishment exclusively devoted to products from ecological farming and livestock.

What is the philosophy on which this model is based?

It is a new sales concept in Spain. Carrefour Bio is an urban supermarket devoted to products that come from ecological farming and livestock. The format is the first of these characteristics opened by a distribution company. The store, located at calle Velarde 1, has a salesroom of 140 m² and it has an assortment of over 2,000 products (over 200 are fresh) with which consumers can complete their entire shop with products from ecological farming and livestock. Amongst the articles on sale are the main Bio specialised brands and the supermarket also offers products from the chain’s own brands, Carrefour Bio and Ecoplanet.

All the food products sold in the store hold ecological certificates.

How many ecological fruit and vegetable references do you sell?

In the Carrefour Bio supermarket we have over 110 references of fruit and vegetables. The majority of them come from Spain.

What is the customer profile of Carrefour Bio and what do you offer them?

The space is at the forefront of the new consumer trends and it is conceived to respond to the needs of a city-dwelling customer, who wants to complete his or her complete shop with products from ecological farming and livestock: fruit, meat, fish, packaged food, refrigerated and frozen produce, dishes to eat on the spot, sandwiches… It also has a range of vegan and gluten-free products.

To look after this establishment, the company has qualified personnel, with training in agricultural engineering, nutrition, dietetics and food… And many of them have previous experience in the ecological sector. Amongst the new developments offered is that of being able to buy the produce loose, not only fruit and vegetables (for which we have recyclable paper bags), but also food products such as quinoa, oat flakes or wholemeal couscous, so that customers only have to buy the amount they need, limiting packaging to a minimum. To help with the shopping process, signs have been developed emphasising products for specific diets, intolerances, as well as vegan food.

How do you contribute to the development of ‘eco’ consumption?

Today, the distribution of ecological products is highly fragmented in Spain.

For a long time, these products were only found in small herbalist stores and the range available was very limited, but over the past few years the concept of an ecological supermarket has been developed, where you can find everything and do all your shopping in one place, as in a conventional supermarket. With the development of our Bio store, we want to increase access to this type of produce, democratising its consumption and helping with the shopping process.

Customers choose this store due to its proximity, the range it carries and the shopping experience and they visit several times a week.

“Este evento es muy importante para nosotros debido a la gran afluencia de personas interesantes que acuden para nuestro negocio. Es el lugar idóneo para volver a ver a nuestros clientes y proveedores, conocer las últimas novedades del sector y hacer prospección comercial”.

La empresa malagueña ha incrementado un 10% su volumen de ventas alcanzando una facturación de 120 millones de euros y 30,6 millones de kg de productos comercializados en fresco. Para 2018 la intención es seguir trabajando para superarse un año más, aunque la consecución de este objetivo “depende del suministro y la demanda en cada momento”.

la eficiencia de los procesos y garantizar la máxima calidad.

El último ejemplo ha sido el restyling de su marca Native para procesado, presentada en la pasada edición de Fruit Attraction, y que llevarán a Fruit Logistica (Pabellón 18 A-06). Esta nueva imagen ha sido el fruto de un largo periodo de búsqueda y es totalmente distinto al antiguo. “Hemos querido resaltar el mayor beneficio que ofrecemos en nuestros productos procesados, es decir, el alto porcentaje de fruta natural que tienen nuestro guacamole (95% aguacate) y salsa de mango (90% mango). Además, queríamos proyectar una imagen mucho más llamativa, cuidada y natural que los clientes agradecen”, explican desde la empresa.

Actualmente Frutas Montosa exporta el 55% de sus productos, centrando su actividad en el mercado europeo y sin quitarle el ojo al mercado asiático, con una importancia creciente, aunque ese destino no está por ahora dentro de sus objetivos a corto plazo.

This new image is the result of a long search and it is completely different to the previous one. “We wanted to emphasise the greater benefits that we offer with our processed produce, that is to say, the high percentage of natural fruit contained in our guacamole (95% avocado) and mango sauce (90%

mango). We also wanted to project a much more eye-catching, careful and natural image that is appreciated by our clients,” sources from the company explain.

At the Berlin trade fair, visitors will be able to see its entire range of produce on a stand that continues to hold the essence of last year’s: with slight modifications to the outer image, fresh produce display units and a refrigerated area for processed produce with all its references and brands to show the diversity of products on offer. “This event is very important for us due to the many visitors who attend and are interested in our business. It is the perfect place to see our clients and suppliers again, to discover the latest developments in the sector and to carry out commercial research.”

Currently, Frutas Montosa exports 55% of its produce, concentrating its activity on the European market, although it has not taken its sights off the increasingly important Asian market, even if the company is not looking at this destination in the short term.

levan tiempo detrás del proyecto y en unos cuantos meses será una realidad. La empresa Novofrut empezará a comercializar tropicales ‘bio’ a partir de 2018/19. El responsable comercial, José Francisco Novo, adelanta a Fruit Today que ya tienen un distribuidor europeo a través de cual venderán su mercancía con la marca Novofrut. Para esta primera fase cuentan con unas 12 hectáreas de cultivo, la mayor parte (un 60%) dedicadas a su producto estrella, la chirimoya, y el resto a mango y aguacate, ambas con un 20% cada una.

En convencional, la firma dispone de 50 hectáreas propias a las que se suman otras de una decena de asociados. En esta campaña, esperan incrementar su producción de fruta un 15%. Esta positiva evolución es el resultado de varias acciones que han desarrollado en los últimos tiempos encaminadas a responder al aumento de la demanda por parte de sus clientes (más superficie de cultivo, ampliación de cámaras de refrigeración y maduración, compra de una nueva nave, etc.).

aunque en menor medida, en terceros países como Marruecos, Oriente Medio y Canadá”, asegura Novo.

Para diferenciarse en términos de calidad, optan por los envíos en avión a los destinos más lejanos, una alternativa rápida que posibilita la recolección en un punto idóneo de maduración.

La mayor parte de sus 12 hectáreas ‘bio’ son de chirimoya

La gama de Novofrut consta de chirimoya (en la variedad Fino de jete), aguacate (Bacon, Fuerte y Hass), mango (Osteen y Keit) y níspero (Golden). Todos ellos se producen y manipulan siguiendo procesos en su mayor parte artesanales. De ahí que, al menos de momento, su principal cuota de mercado sean los mercados tradicionales (Mercas e importadores).

Entre sus retos, solo hay uno que se les escapa: “seguimos teniendo la eterna necesidad de agua. Falta una mayor agilidad en las canalizaciones por parte de la Administración”.

In order to differentiate the company in terms of quality, they opt for shipping by air to the more distant destinations, a fast alternative that allows the fruit to be harvested at the perfect point of ripeness.

Novofrut’s range is made up of custard apples (of the Fino de jete variety), avocados (Bacon, Fuerte and Hass), mangos (Osteen and Keit) and medlars (Golden). All of them are produced and handled using mainly traditional manual processes. This is the reason, at least at the moment, for its main market share being found on the traditional markets (marketplaces and importers).

l presidente de la DO Chirimoya de la Costa Tropical de Granada, Antonio Sánchez, prevé que la cosecha de 2018/19 no llegará a los 40 millones de kilos debido al viento, las altas temperaturas y la sequía. Este último aspecto sigue estando en boca de todo el sector, que sufre la lentitud de la Administración a la hora de poner solución a la falta de agua vía infraestructuras. “Nos urge que se acelere todo.

Estamos regando a 50 días en la Vega de Almuñécar con una subida de costes de agua de hasta 0,50€/m3 y eso donde hay agua, porque se están secando los pozos”, aseguraba el presidente de la DO a Fruit Today el pasado mes de enero.

La presente campaña comenzó con cosechas más tardías y buena calidad de fruta.

De media, en enero se alcanzaron los 2€/kg debido a la menor oferta.

Granada es el principal productor mundial de chirimoya. Cuenta con una superficie estable de 3.100 hectáreas y exporta alrededor del 20% del total a la UE. Esta fruta se conoce cada vez más entre los consumidores europeos, en busca de productos saludables.

“La chirimoya es una farmacia. Tiene propiedades muy similares a la guanábana, mejor sabor, se come más fácilmente y es más económica”.

n esta campaña, la empresa que lidera Prudencio López prevé experimentar un aumento importante en su facturación (+10 millones de euros respecto a la pasada), alcanzando los 40 millones. Se confirma así la evolución positiva de la empresa malagueña, tras el excelente balance anual que obtuvo en 2016, con un crecimiento cercano al 35%. En apenas 10 años Natural Tropic ha logrado erigirse como uno de los principales exponentes en el sector de las subtropicales. Entre sus principales virtudes está el hecho de priorizar la producción propia para realizar un control exhaustivo de la calidad. No en vano, cada año la firma incrementa su superficie de cultivo, y solo entre 2016/17 ha sumado 150 nuevas hectáreas. “Queremos ser un referente en producción propia, ya tenemos 250 Has y vamos a seguir invirtiendo en este sentido”, asegura el gerente.

El aguacate es su producto principal (junto a chirimoya, mango, kumquat, níspero y papaya), y actualmente casi una cuarta parte de los volúmenes que comercializan es de cultivo ecológico. brica a diario para suministrarlo con la máxima frescura en España y alrededores y se ofrece en diferentes versiones: sabor suave y picante, así como en ecológico. A todo ello se añade el hecho de que recientemente han incorporado cámaras de maduración y nueva maquinaria para analizar la calidad interna de la fruta con un sistema de infrarrojos.

Natural Tropic comenzó su andadura con una firme vocación exportadora. Está plenamente consolidada en los principales países consumidores de subtropicales a nivel europeo como Francia, Inglaterra, Alemania, Suiza, Bélgica, Holanda y Escandinavia, y tiene clientes en destinos más lejanos como Canadá y Sudamérica. A nivel nacional también crece. De hecho, España ya representa “el 35% de nuestro volumen total, cuando hace apenas dos años copaba el 20%”.

Avocado pears are the main produce (along with custard apples, mangos, kumquats, medlars and papayas), and currently almost a quarter of the volumes marketed by the company are ecological crops. In addition to the fresh production, for the last few years they have had a line of processed avocado (guacamole) that is on the increase. This product is prepared daily to supply it with the maximum freshness in Spain and to its neighbours and it is offered in different versions: mild and spicy, as well as ecological. Added to this is the fact that they have recently incorporated ripening rooms and new machinery to analyse the internal quality of the fruit using an infrared system.

Natural Tropic started its professional journey with a strong exporting vocation. It is fully consolidated in the main sub-tropical fruit consuming countries in Europe, such as France, England, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland and Scandinavia, and it has customers in more distant destinations such as Canada and South America. It is also growing on a national scale.

In fact, Spain now represents “35% of our total volume, when just two years ago it only reached 20%”.

a apuesta de Frutas Los Cursos por sumar valor añadido a sus frutas tropicales está obteniendo unos resultados más que positivos. El pasado verano desde Fruit Today adelantamos el lanzamiento de su nueva línea de IV y V gama, y a lo largo de este tiempo la línea de zumos naturales (chirimoya y mango) ha logrado conquistar el paladar de todos aquellos que los han probado. ace una década le llamaron “loco” por aventurarse a hacer algo inédito hasta ese momento en Almuñécar: el manipulado y comercialización directa de aguacate. En esos años los productores de la zona cultivaban tropicales y dejaban el resto a las empresas de Málaga. Gregorio Jiménez, gerente de Frutas El Cerval, quiso dar un paso más y apostó por una senda que después siguieron la mayor parte de las empresas granadinas. “Pensé, ¿por qué no? Y aquí seguimos”. A día de hoy, la empresa cultiva 100 hectáreas y sigue creciendo.

El aguacate es su producto principal (copa el 60% del total), seguido de chirimoya, mango y níspero. Entre todas ellas sumarán unos 4 millones de kilos esta campaña, en su mayoría destinados a países europeos (70% de su cuota comercial).

Para abastecer a sus clientes los 12 meses, importan producto de otros orígenes como Perú, Chile, México y Kenia en contraestación. “Cuidamos que tenga una calidad homogénea en línea con los productos que ofrecemos de origen nacional”, explica Jiménez.

Novedades Recientemente la empresa ha incorporado una calibradora de mango y chirimoya para agilizar el flujo de trabajo en sus instalaciones y ampliar así su capacidad productiva. Asimismo, han sumado una nueva marca a las ya tradicionales de Frutas El Cerval y Bañuelos, denominada Teresa.

También cabe destacar el lanzamiento de su web, www. frutaselcerval.com, remodelada y con una imagen más actual y sencilla, reflejo de su filosofía empresarial.

Conocido como aguacate dátil por su forma característica, esta versión “mini” no es sino una malformación del fruto que resulta muy atractiva por su reducido tamaño (entre 60-100 gr frente al estándar de 250) y por el hecho de que carece de hueso, pudiéndose aprovechar todo el fruto. Manuel Jesús Ortega, gerente de Frutas El Portón, lo comercializa hace una década en tarrinas de 500 gr que suelen destinarse principalmente a hostelería. Confiesa que tras la publicación de una noticia en la que se mencionaba a la empresa, ha recibido un aluvión de llamadas y mensajes de empresas de todo el mundo (Argentina, Escandinavia ). “Es algo sobrevenido y me sorprendió porque no es nada nuevo, en el campo se conoce de toda la vida”. En la variedad Fuerte es en la que más se suele dar el aborto de frutos, fundamentalmente durante el mes de diciembre, y también (aunque en menor medida) en la Pinkerton. Obviamente, es imposible hablar de controlar su producción. “A veces pasa en una rama entera, otras solo en unos frutos o incluso en todo el árbol, pero no sabemos el por qué”. Lo que sí es seguro es su rentabilidad, a en torno a 3€/kg.

La producción onubense se caracteriza por su alta especialización, a lo que se une su capacidad para estar presente en los mercados durante casi nueve meses con una oferta extensa en toda la categoría de berries: fresas, frambuesas, arándanos y moras, productos a los que recientemente se han incorporado las bayas de goyi.

Respecto al transcurso de la actual campaña, el ejecutivo explica que “las primeras fresas llegaron al mercado con una gran calidad y las cadenas así nos lo han hecho saber y esperamos que todo continúe así, que las condiciones meteorológicas respeten el campo y tengamos una campaña por lo menos, como la del año pasado.”

En cuanto a los volúmenes de producción de la provincia, la temporada presenta un aumento de superficie de un 9%, “aspecto que ya intuíamos pero que nos situará en torno a unos volúmenes muy parecidos a los de hace varias campañas. Como ya he comentado

“We need to go outside European borders” Selling outside the Old World is a commercial requirement that the sector is planning as one of its top priority challenges With the main European markets already consolidated, the Huelva berries sector is seriously looking at other commercial options such as countries in the Persian Gulf or China. In order to market with Asia, the export protocol for blueberries has already been presented at the Ministry. “We are living in a globalised world and we must look for new business opportunities since we maintain one of the most professional berry sectors in the world and our offer has a very wide range and is continuously increasing,” explains Rafael Domínguez, manager of Freshuelva.

Reaching out into the distance, but without abandoning what we have close by, since “the Spanish market itself in some of the categories such as raspberries and blueberries still has a long way to go, along with strengthening our presence in countries such as Sweden, Norway and Finland,” the executive comments.

The production from Huelva is characterised by its high degree of specialisation, to which is added its capacity to be present on the markets almost nine months of the year with an extensive offer in all the berry categories: strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries, products to which Goji berries have recently been incorporated.

Concerning the current campaign, the executive explains that “the first strawberries arrived onto the market with very good quality and the chains have informed us of this and we hope that it all continues in the same way, and that the weather conditions respect the fields and we have a campaign that is more or less like last year’s.”

Regarding the province’s production volumes, this season is showing a 9% increase in surface area, “an aspect that we already sensed, but that will give us some volumes that are very similar to those of a few campaigns ago. As I have mentioned on previous occasions, there won’t be any significant imbalances and we will always be

within a range of more or less 5%.”

Referring to the significant increase recorded in the production of blueberries and the drop in profitability for the farmers (between the 2012-13 and the current campaigns, the production hectares have tripled and currently reach 2,858), Domínguez explains that “we know the concern that this subject generates, but with the promotions and the opening up of new markets, I am sure that the situation will improve, because a product with these characteristics still has a long way to go.”

In terms of raspberries, this is a highly balanced crop, both in production and in hectares and it has the advantage of its two campaigns: autumn-winter and spring.

“There were a few problems in the autumn due to the warmth, but at Christmas the product was marketed very well and without any hiccups; and in the near future, in February, we will start the spring season with the remounting varieties. Generally, all the raspberry varieties have excellent results in Huelva.”

With respect to the agreement signed with the Chilean entity Asoex, the executive from the Andalusian Association comments that “it has been a significant step regarding the exchange of experiences since Chile is an important producing country that is well advanced in everything on the subject of post-harvest and it has great experience on very distant markets, and we can provide knowledge about variety renewal and crops. It is the moment to develop relations with an important exporting country and, in fact, some Andalusian companies have subsidiaries in this country,” Domínguez adds.

The strength and importance of the sector is reflected in the figures, as may be seen by numbers from the last campaigns, with red berry exports passing the barrier of 1,000 million euros, meaning 19% more than in the previous year.

s sólo el inicio de una oferta anual que se extiende desde la provincia castellanoleonesa y en la que, por primera vez, se han recolectado 210.000 kilos de producto procedentes de una superficie de 5,5 hectáreas.

“En frambuesa al igual que en fresa hemos conseguido completar el calendario anual. Seguimos investigando para tener arándanos y moras todo el año, aunque con arándanos ya estamos en el mercado durante ocho meses, y el desarrollo de las moras será uno de los retos de las próximas campañas”.

El nuevo reto será tener mora durante todo el año

Este aspecto constituye uno de los principales retos de la compañía que ha buscado desarrollar el concepto “Your global berry partner”, con el objeto de mantener una oferta durante todo el año “que haga posible la incorporación de esta categoría a la cesta de la compra habitual”, matiza el presidente de la cooperativa, José Manuel Márquez.

Por primera vez, el pasado mes de marzo, la entidad andaluza inició la plantación de fresas en territorio abulense “y ello nos ha permitido tener producto cuando en Huelva la campaña ya ha finalizado ya que en esta zona se inicia la cosecha en el mes de junio, cuando la temporada andaluza acaba”.

En 2017, Cuna de Platero ha afianzado su modelo de producción sostenible y responsable, una forma de trabajar en la que están involucradas todas las áreas de la empresa, desde el campo hasta el almacén, así como departamentos internos de la cooperativa moguereña.

“El trabajo realizado en Ávila es el mismo que hacemos en Huelva, marcado por la sostenibilidad y el respeto al entorno en el que trabajamos, ofreciendo al cliente una fruta de calidad, natural y con sabor”, indica Márquez.

Nuevos departamentos y transformación digital La creación del nuevo departamento de Recursos Humanos ha sido otro de los retos llevados a cabo. Esta área “gestiona toda la administración de personal de forma homogénea y general, unificando la cultura, valores, comunicación, etc. de Cuna de Platero”. Según explica el presidente, este nuevo departamento aporta “seguridad jurídica, coordinación y gestión de recursos y aspiramos a que sea un área estratégica que nos ayude en la toma de decisiones”.

El cambio de modelo de uno tradicional a otro tecnológico y digital “es uno de los caminos que estamos recorriendo” y, para ello, “Recursos Humanos nos garantiza que tendremos perfiles que acompañen a esa inversión tecnológica. Actualmente estamos inmersos en la implantación del ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) y finalizando la modernización de los sistemas de envasado y paletizado”.

La cooperativa ha organizado la III edición de Fresayunando, desayunos en los que han participado más de 2.000 niños de Moguer y su entorno. Además, se ha celebrado la II edición del Campamento de Inteligencia Emocional de Cuna de Platero, organizado con la PPO Foundation y la colaboración del Ayuntamiento de Moguer.

Por otro lado, la entidad también realiza patrocinios deportivos y actos del centenario de la publicación del ‘Diario de un poeta recién casado’.

Circulation of healthy habits Cuna de Platero has joined the “5 al día” (5 a day) association, as well as renewing its cooperation agreement with the Spanish Heart Foundation (FEC).

Along with the other red fruits, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries, work is being carried out to maintain a variety balance throughout the year to avoid production peaks on certain dates.

The cooperative has organised the 3rd edition of ‘Fresayunando’ (‘Strawberryfasting’), breakfasts in which over 2,000 children from Moguer and the surrounding area have taken part. It has also held the 2nd edition of the Cuna de Platero Emotional Intelligence Camp, organised with the PPO Foundation and with cooperation from Moguer Town Council.

n las II Jornadas Estratégicas del Sector organizadas por Interfresa, el director técnico de Fresas Nuevos Materiales, Antonio Refoyo Piriz, explicó la evolución de los proyectos de investigación Ovofresa y Freshvar. El primero comenzó en 2009 sobre ‘Obtención de variedades y selecciones de fresa para la provincia de Huelva (y áreas agroclimáticas similares) y Freshvar, en 2011 sobre la ‘Selección de variedades de fresa para Andalucía con calidad mejorada y tolerantes a podredumbre’, ambos con incentivos de IDEA y la Corporación Tecnológica de Andalucía.

La compañía andaluza ha sido capaz de introducir en pocos años variedades de fresas como Primoris FNM, Rábida FNM y Rociera FNM, que actualmente copan ya el 37,25% de las plantaciones y que permiten mantener el producto en los mercados europeos durante más tiempo y competir con las producciones locales.

De sus tres variedades, la más asentada es Primoris con una cuota cercana al 17%, a la que le siguen Rábida y Rociera, con un porcentaje del 10%, ambas. Aunque los tres materiales están en plena expansión, la firma centra sus esfuerzos en la variedad Rociera, una fresa que se caracteriza por mantener su sabor y dulzor hasta el final del ciclo y mantiene una larga vida comercial.

De gran tamaño, Rociera ha sido la última de las variedades que ha entrado con fuerza en el campo onubense, superando en la actualidad los 55 millones de plantas. Desde el punto de vista agronómico, Rociera es una planta vigorosa, de largos pedúnculos que facilitan su recolección y con una arquitectura abierta que favorece que el número de aplicaciones fitosanitarias se reduzcan.

“El objetivo de la empresa pasa por garantizar al productor un producto que pueda mantener una comercialización estable y rentable hasta el final de campaña,” explican desde el departamento comercial de la firma.

“The company’s aim lies in guaranteeing producers a product that can maintain a stable, profitable marketing until the end of the campaign,” sources from the company’s sales department explain.

a Asociación Onubense de Exportadores y Productores de Fresas y Frutos Rojos, Freshuelva, al igual que las 11 empresas asociadas que le acompañan (Grufesa, Plus Berries, Doñana 1998, Onubafruit, Surexport, Euroberry, Interterra SAT, Frutas Esther, Special Fruit, Driscoll’s y FresRoyal), contará con un stand en el que expondrá los berries de la provincia con los objetivos de seguir trabajando por la promoción internacional de los frutos rojos de la provincia de Huelva, la consolidación y búsqueda de líneas de comercialización y abrir nuevos mercados presentes en la feria, como son los del norte de Europa, los asiáticos o los de los países de Oriente Medio.

El Hall 18 de la feria acogerá el stand B-02C de Freshuelva, en el que la asociación desarrollará una completa agenda de trabajo, que comenzará en la primera jornada con la presentación de las novedades del Cuarto Congreso de Frutos Rojos, que se celebrará en Huelva el 20 y 21 de junio de este año, en el que se consolidará el carácter internacional del mismo y cuyo contenido se avanzará precisamente en Berlín.

Promoción para toda la categoría El sector prepara una nueva campaña promocional en la que se puedan incluir todos los berries

os excelentes resultados de la campaña “Vive la Roja. Fresas de Europa” permiten que ya se trabaje en un nuevo proyecto que pueda incluir toda la extensa gama de berries con los que cuenta la provincia de Huelva.

El representante de Interfresa, García-Palacios Álvarez espera que en una fecha cercana a la feria internacional de Fruit Logistica se haya terminado con el trámite burocrático del cambio de nombre de la asociación y pase a denominarse `Asociación Interprofesional de los Frutos Rojos ya que “se trata de un proceso iniciado en 2017 respaldado por unanimidad en la Asamblea. De esta manera, en la próxima campaña de promoción ya puedan incluirse todos los frutos rojos.”

Todas las actuaciones promocionales que se llevaron a cabo fueron dirigidas al consumidor final tanto en supermercados como ferias o eventos. Se llevaron a cabo degustaciones, acciones diversas con los prescriptores; iniciativas en internet y redes sociales, apariciones en medios de comunicación de masas, acciones con bloggers y encuentros con periodistas de los tres países mencionados.

España, Francia y Alemania han sido durante un trienio (2015-2018) los receptores de esta campaña, coordinada por la agencia B-Ideas, y en la cual se invirtieron 3,6 millones de euros, de los que fondos de la U.E. financiaron el 50%, 30% el MAPAMA y un 20% Interfresa.

“Tras Adelita, el nuevo desafío es la mora” Frambuesa y mora continúan siendo objetivos de investigación de primer nivel en la categoría de berries

ruit Today Euromagazine habló con Eduardo Aguirre, nuevo Product Manager de esta categoría en Planasa.

“Aunque la frambuesa continuará siendo la piedra angular de la compañía, en un futuro próximo asistiremos a una considerable mejora varietal en mora, que probablemente suponga el despegue comercial de este producto para Planasa”, remarca el ejecutivo.

“El desarrollo de nuevas selecciones que mejoren las características competitivas únicas de Adelita, que puedan aportar mejoras relevantes, continuará por parte de la compañía, pero a día de hoy, la mora es nuestro mayor desafío”. Está dando muy buenos resultados en I+D+i y “es muy probable que alguna de 76 Fruittoday

las selecciones avanzadas con las que ya llevamos tiempo experimentando puedan ver la luz a corto plazo”.

Las líneas de investigación de frambuesa en las que Planasa está trabajando actualmente van orientadas a la mejora de las variedades comerciales (Adelita y Lupita), focalizándose en la reducción de costes de producción (mayor concentración de producción y facilidad de cosecha) y en la mejora de la vida útil o post cosecha de la fruta.

El club de la frambuesa Para su programa con Adelita, Planasa mantiene para el mercado español, portugués y marroquí un club de cinco socios, entre los que se encuentran tres productores (Cuna

de Platero, Frutas Borja y Arofa) y dos comercializadoras (Soloberry y Surberry).

Respecto a la hermana menor de Adelita, Lupita, Planasa tiene el firme convencimiento de que acabará siendo una variedad importante en el sur de Europa y Marruecos.

“En los dos últimos años hemos constatado un incremento porcentual de las plantaciones bastante significativo y, en opinión de muchos agricultores, es una variedad muy interesante ya que complementa a Adelita al principio y final de campaña”.

Opinión Optimismo “condicionado” Las Cooperativas europeas en defensa del Régimen de Ayudas Comunitarias ante la Reforma de la PAC En noviembre, la Comisión Europea abrió la discusión sobre la PAC post 2020 con su Comunicación “El futuro de la alimentación y de la agricultura”. El documento hace una declaración de principios “en pos de una política agrícola común, flexible, equitativa y sostenible”. Una discusión que quedará marcada por las perspectivas financieras (presupuesto “post-Brexit”), el nuevo orden de prioridades en la construcción europea (migración, defensa, seguridad…) y por otros más prácticos, como la reducción de recursos de la DG Agri. Un debate que, por cierto, inicia una Comisión y un Parlamento que no lo culminarán, porque si la reforma se retrasa se cerrará en la siguiente legislatura.

La Comunicación enuncia algunos objetivos, pero permite una primera valoración antes de que la Comisión lance su propuesta normativa. La preocupación más profunda es la reducción del presupuesto debido al “Brexit”.

También existe el riesgo de desmantelamiento o nacionalización de la PAC y de debilitamiento del funcionamiento del mercado único, si –como apunta la Comunicaciónfueran los Estados miembro (¿o las regiones?) quienes, “agraciados” con una mayor subsidiariedad, eligieran, cada uno para su territorio, el tipo de medidas financiables, dentro de unos “parámetros básicos” comunitarios.

La declaración de la Comisión a favor del mantenimiento de los pagos directos ha tranquilizado a muchos, pero esta premisa hipoteca la posibilidad de implantar otro tipo de instrumentos, como por ejemplo, el establecimiento de un sistema de gestión de crisis grave.

La Comunicación habla, del refuerzo del “papel y el funcionamiento eficaz de las Organizaciones de Productores” para mejorar la “posición negociadora de los productores en la cadena de valor”, “reducir sus costes y aumentar su competitividad de modo que mejoren la recompensa en el mercado”. La figura de OP, nacida en el seno de la “OCM de Frutas y Hortalizas” llegó a otras producciones desvirtuada hasta convertirse en “entidades representativas o instrumentales” en vez de en entidades empresariales de comercialización, (las únicas útiles para los agricultores…).

Más coincidencias. La Comisión habla de una PAC más orientada a “estimular las inversiones” y de un “presupuesto centrado en resultados”. Desde hace 20 años, el régimen de ayudas comunitarias es un sistema finalista y orientado a resultados.

Habla la Comisión de dar más protagonismo a los Estados miembro para aplicar la PAC. Desde hace años, la “OCMFH” se apoya en “Estrategias Nacionales” que diseñan cada Estado miembro, lo cual, por cierto, no ha simplificado la carga burocrática. Sin embargo, cuando la Comisión otorga más autonomía a los Estados miembro, pero se reserva la “última palabra”, la inseguridad jurídica complica la gestión.

Si hablamos, de gasto, nuestro sistema de ayudas es cofinanciado por los productores (lo cual supone la mejor garantía de eficacia) y consume una partida presupuestaria ínfima si se compara con su aportación a la producción final agraria.

Por todo ello, si las futuras propuestas normativas de PAC post 2020 fueran fieles a la Comunicación de la Comisión (y dejando aparte -también yo-, el futuro del presupuesto de la PAC), sería más bien optimista: las ayudas comunitarias a las frutas y hortalizas, basadas en los PO deberían mantenerse. Insisto, se trata de un optimismo “condicionado”,

considerando que la revisión del presupuesto de la PAC no haga estragos.

Además de aportar “valor añadido europeo”, se trata de un sistema de ayudas bien adaptado a nuestras cooperativas. En este contexto, las organizaciones representativas de las cooperativas del sector y de la mayoría de las OP europeas, hemos fijado una posición conjunta sobre el futuro del “Régimen de ayudas FH”. Bajo el título “Mantener, mejorar y asegurar el régimen de ayudas comunitarias al sector de las frutas y hortalizas”, consideramos que esta herramienta es la que mejor se adapta a las necesidades del sector. Así, pedimos preservar una definición específica y empresarial de las OPFH, basada en la función comercial de las mismas, así como mantener la obligación de que éstas cuenten con los medios apropiados a sus objetivos. Pedimos también que se continúe apoyando, la financiación de los Programas Operativos de esas OPFH, con una ayuda finalista, proporcional al VPC, contenida en el primer pilar y cofinanciada por un presupuesto suficiente.

Entre las propuestas de mejora figuran: mejorar la financiación de los PO de las OP que más contribuyan a la concentración de la oferta (por ejemplo, las que alcancen un determinado tamaño, o que progresan en dimensión o que sean fruto de procesos de integraciones; mejorar la elegibilidad de determinadas acciones; flexibilizar la medida de PGC y en particular mejorar la distribución gratuita; establecer un nivel mínimo de reconocimiento a nivel comunitario; simplificar, desburocratizar, dar coherencia y seguridad jurídica a los sistemas de control y de auditorías.

Soy optimista. Optimista “condicionado”.

“Conditioned” optimism European cooperatives defend the Community Aid Regime in view of the Reform of the CAP Last November, the European Commission started up the discussion about the CAP post 2020 with its Communication “The future of food and agriculture”. The document makes a declaration of principles “in pursuit of a common, flexible, fair and sustainable agricultural policy”.

A discussion that will be marked by the financial prospects (“post-Brexit” budget), the new order of priorities in the European construction (migration, defence, safety…) and due to other more practical ones, such as the reduction of resources of the DG ACRI. A debate which, incidentally, is being started by a Commission and a Parliament that will not bring it to an end, because if the reform is delayed, it will be closed in the following legislature.

The Communication sets forth some targets, but it allows a first valuation before the Commission launches its legislative proposal. The deepest concern lies in the reduction of the budget due to “Brexit”.

There is also the risk of decommissioning or nationalisation of the CAP and of the weakening of the operation of the single market, if (as the Communication points out), the “lucky ones” with greater Subsidiarity, were the Member States (or the regions?) who chose the type of financing steps, within some “basic community parameters,” each one for their own territory, The Commission’s statement in favour of maintaining the direct payments has calmed many, but this premise removes the possibility of implanting any other type of instruments, such as, for example, the establishment of a serious crisis management system.

The Communication talks about the reinforcement of the “role and the efficient operation of the Producers’ Organisations” to improve the “negotiating position of the producers on the chain of value,” “reducing their costs and increasing their competitiveness in such a way that the compensation on the market will improve.” The figure of PO, born in the heart of the CMO of Fruit and Vegetables” was distorted when it reached other productions until becoming “representational or instrumental entities” instead of marketing business entities, (the only ones useful for the farmers…).

More coincidences. The Commission talks about a CAP that is more aimed at “stimulating investments” and a “budget centred on results.” For the past 20 years, the community aid regime has been a goal and result-oriented system.

The Commission talks about giving greater relevance to the Member States for applying the CAP. For many years, the “CMOFV” has been supported by “National Strategies” designed by each Member State, which, by the way, have not made the bureaucratic burden any easier. However, when the Commission grants more independence to the Member States, but reserves the right to the “last word,” and legal uncertainty complicates the management process.

If we talk about expenditure, our aid system is co-funded by the producers (which means the best guarantee of effectiveness) and it takes up a minute budget item if compared with its contribution to the final agricultural production.

For all these reasons, if the future legislative proposals of the CAP post 2020 were true to the Commission’s Communication (and I myself also leaving to one side the future of the budget of the CAP), I would be rather optimistic: the community aid for fruit and vegetables, based on the PO must be maintained. I insist this is a “conditional” optimism, considering that the reviewing of the CAP’s budget does not wreak havoc.

We would also ask that this support continues, with the funding of the Operational Programmes of these POFV using goaloriented aid, proportional to the VPC, contained in the first pillar and co-funded by a sufficient budget.

Amongst the improvement proposals are the following: improving the funding of the OP of the PO that contribute most to the concentration of the offer (for example, those that reach a certain size or that progress in scale or that are the result of integration processes; improving the eligibility of certain actions; making the PGC measures more flexible, and, in particular, improving the free distribution; establishing a minimum level of community recognition; simplifying, cutting out the red tape, giving coherence and legal certainty to the control and auditing systems.

I am optimistic. “Conditionally” optimistic.

Las variedades club ganan la batalla El consumo de manzana en Europa desciende en el orden de un 1% anual, pero no todas las variedades son las afectadas

e hecho, si en este juego existe un ganador son las variedades club, de las que, hoy en día, existen más de 70. Las principales insignias son Pink Lady, Jazz, Kanzi, Red Prince, Envy, Ambrosia, Ariane, Kiku, Junami, Honeycrunch, Cameo, Sveetango y Yello.

La producción europea de variedades club abarca más de 14.000 hectáreas, con una capacidad de producción que puede situarse en 500.000 toneladas de producto.

Estas variedades han nacido y tienen su emplazamiento en los 15 países occidentales y representan cerca de un 7% de la producción. De momento no tienen cabida en la Europa Oriental. “Todo indica que el futuro de la manzana, posiblemente la fruta más avanzada en cuanto a la exclusividad de los clubs, pasa por este sistema controlado de producción” explican fuentes del sector.

Según Helwig Schwartau, de AMI, “al consumidor europeo le gustan las variedades club y son las que han tomado ventaja respecto a las

variedades más tradicionales, a excepción de la Gala, una manzana que sigue aumentando tanto en producción como consumo.” Así en 2016, el 22% de los volúmenes vendidos en el Reino Unido se correspondían con las variedades Pink Lady y Jazz, frente a un 17% en el año 2014. En Bélgica este porcentaje, para las mismas variedades, se sitúa desde el 2014 en torno al 20% y en Alemania la cifra llega al 14%. “Lo que sí parece claro, es que el crecimiento de consumo se da exclusivamente con las variedades club, de ahí el gran interés que suscitan en toda la cadena.”

Club varieties are winning the battle Apple consumption in Europe is dropping by around 1% per year, but not all varieties are affected In fact, if there is a winner in this game, it has to be the club varieties, of which there are over 70 today. The main insignias are Pink Lady, Jazz, Kanzi, Red Prince, Envy, Ambrosia, Ariane, Kiku, Junami, Honeycrunch, Cameo, Sveetango and Yello.

European production of club varieties covers over 14,000 hectares, with a production capacity that can reach around 500,000 tonnes of produce.

These varieties have been created and are located in the 15 western countries and they represent round 7% of the production. Currently, they are not present in Eastern Europe. “Everything indicates that the future of apples, possibly the most advanced fruit regarding the exclusivity of the clubs, involves using this controlled production system,” sources from the sector explain.

According to Helwig Schwartau, from AMI, “European consumers like the club varieties and they have taken over from the more traditional varieties, with the exception of Gala, an apple that continues to increase both in production and in consumption.” Therefore, in 2016, 22% of the volumes sold in the United Kingdom corresponded to the Pink Lady and Jazz varieties, compared to 17% in 2014. In Belgium, since 2014 this percentage has been around 20% for the same varieties and in Germany the figure reaches 14%. “What seems obvious is that the growth in consumption is

exclusively happening to the club varieties, which is the reason behind the important interest that they cause throughout the entire chain.”

Pink Lady The Cripps Pink variety (commercially known as Pink Lady) fulfils the Spanish saying that “whoever hits first, hits twice”. The future of Pink Lady follows a winning route: in 2007 in Europe there were 133,000 tonnes of production and a decade later, this volume is now over 260,000 tonnes. And the forecasts point towards the fact that the production could reach 275,000 tonnes.

But there are another two varieties that are following in the brilliant wake of Pink Lady, and these are Jazz and Kanzi. In 2010, the first one upheld a production of 57,300 tonnes. l desarrollo de esta técnica para la producción de plantas en vivero a doble eje ha penetrado en las mayores producciones europeas debido a sus ventajosas características.

La principal de éstas se resume en el factor tiempo, ya que el árbol en rama se planta de la misma manera que se venía haciendo, pero éste ya se encuentra listo para producir.

Esta rápida entrada en producción y su evolución hacia sistemas de formación bidimensionales facilita las diversas operaciones de cultivo: la poda, el aclareo o la recolección, así como la mecanización

Este procedimiento permite un evidente ahorro de mano de obra ya que es un sistema que se adecúa de manera sencilla a la mecanización.

El sistema, que se encuentra muy expandido por toda Europa, es muy valorado por

los productores catalanes de Girona y Lleida. En este sentido, Ignasi Iglesias, científico del IRTA remarca que “una de las principales ventajas radica en una copa más bidimensional de las plantas y una mejor ocupación del espacio asignado, lo que permite una iluminación más uniforme de los frutos, una reducción de las zonas sombreadas y una menor afección de aquellas variedades sensibles a los golpes de sol.”

El especialista del IRTA explica cómo el sistema supone otras ventajas añadidas como la formación de madera joven en el árbol. “Todo ello debido a una mayor interceptación de la luz, manteniendo los frutos más cercanos al eje y minimizando la

The development of this technique for producing plants in nurseries using dual-axis is already present in the largest European productions due to its many advantages.

The system’s most important feature may be summarised in the time factor, since the new tree is planted in the usual way, but it is already ready for production. This fast entry into business and its evolution towards two-dimensional systems make the different growing operations easier: pruning, thinning or harvesting, as well as the total or partial mechanisation of these tasks.

Another of the improvements lies in the efficiency of the plant protection treatments to avoid drifting as much as possible, which allows producers to move forward towards a more exact fruit growing process, which is, therefore, more economically and environmentally sustainable.

This procedure allows an obvious saving in labour costs, since it is a system that is easily adapted to mechanisation.

The system, which is quite widespread all over Europe, is very highly valued by the Catalonian producers from Gerona and Lerida. On this point, Ignasi Iglesias, a scientist from IRTA, comments that “one of the main advantages lies in the fact that the plants have a more two-dimensional crown and improved occupation of the assigned space, which allows a more uniform lighting of the fruit, a reduction in shady areas and less impact on varieties that are sensitive to sunlight or ‘sun blow’.”

The specialist from IRTA explains how the system conveys other added advantages, such as the forming of young wood on the tree. “All of this is due to a greater interception of the light, keeping the fruit closer to the axis and minimising the woody structure of the tree, which in turn provides an increase in the size, colour of the fruit and quality of the harvest.”

And along the same lines, sources from one of the Catalonian cooperatives state that “this volume of the crown is translated into a larger number of leaves and fruit, which means a larger percentage of top quality fruit.”

After several decades of practise work, the method has been validated and acknowledged by scientists all over Europe and it has been fully confirmed that the investment recovery period is less than for the traditional Spindel system.

In total, 24 producers belonging to the organisation cultivate around 700 hectares of apples.

Consistent with the latest state of affairs, where productions with less water and carbon footprints are being demanded, the company from Catalonia is carrying out what the scientific world knows as ‘sustainable intensification’, that is to say, highly technified farming, with the same surface area, producing more, but reducing the environmental impact.

La firma no ha olvidado el tema marketiniano y desde el año pasado ha puesto en marcha varias iniciativas promocionales, la campaña “Ellas son de aquí” para patrocinar el deporte femenino, así como el etiquetado de sus manzanas con los nombres propios más comunes.

En esta misma línea, la empresa realizará diferentes jornadas de degustación en los principales mercados mayoristas españoles para mostrar a los detallistas las bondades tanto de Envy como de Evelina.

Nufri adds two new club varieties

During this campaign, the company will add Club varieties Envy and Evelina to its extensive portfolio.

At its farm La Rasa, in Soria, one of the largest in Europe, Nufri has started developing two highly promising Club varieties: Envy and Evelina.

Envy takes up the first part of the campaign and Evelina will correspond to the second part of the season. “We have opted for these two club varieties because we strongly believe in them. The first one belongs to a super-sweet category and we know that there is a market segment that is highly appreciative of this characteristic; the second one corresponds to a red variety, which is very juicy and aromatic, with a long shelf life and high yield, which has good qualities for ecological production,” explains Ignasi Argilés, production manager at Nufri.

Regarding the development maintained by club varieties compared to the more traditional varieties, the executive comments that “working with them means a high level of investment and specialisation, but if the right ones are chosen, consumers know how to appreciate it.”

The Nufri business group produces, imports and markets products from the five continents, but its star fruit must be the apple. Producer and panellist for important brands, its production of 1,000 hectares of high mountain apples in the technified farm of La Rasa (Soria) has meant a real revolution in the fruit and vegetable growing sector. This is the venue where the Group has decided to take its first steps with the club varieties recently included in its offer. All of this without forgetting the company’s own brand Livinda.

“Our aim as a company is to meet any kind of demand for a product in which we have traditionally been specialists and one to which we are strongly committed. We are open to a whole world of possibilities, since the market is ever-changing and our purpose is to cater for it.”

The company has not forgotten its market-focused subject and last year it started up several promotional initiatives, with the campaign “They are from here” (“Ellas son de aquí”) to sponsor women’s sports, as well as labelling their apples with the most usual girl’s names.

Along these lines, the company will carry out different tasting days in the main Spanish wholesale markets to show retailers the goodness of both Envy and Evelina.

Otra iniciativa fue elegida por periodistas de la prensa profesional: 5/ Preservación del ecosistema en zonas de humedales Benoît Laforgue, EARL de Montfourcaud, Bessens, Francia. Por la realización de un diagnóstico medioambiental con la asociación naturalista regional y elaboración de una serie de acciones para preservar la biodiversidad de humedales cercanos a las explotaciones.

No todo el mundo conoce las artimañas para dormir a 100 metros de un oso negro americano y no ser atacado.

Michael Brinkmann, el nuevo CEO de SanLucar, sí.

Su pasión por la naturaleza le viene de niño, cuando veraneaba en una de las islas del mar del Norte cercana a Bremen, ciudad en la que nació en 1977.

Estudió Administración de Empresas y acabó su MBA en EEUU. Casado con una licenciada en ADE y doctorada en Emprendimiento, ambos comparten la misma afición. Su luna de miel, con mochila y tienda de campaña, duró tres meses recorriendo pueblos y rutas poco exploradas en Sudamérica, donde ver a un hombre blanco de 2,03 m. causaba sensación.

Michael es un hombre afable y cosmopolita, que ha vivido en Sudáfrica, California, Francia y ahora lleva cinco años en España. Cuando le entrevisté, acababa de llegar de unas vacaciones en Argentina con toda su prole de 3, 6 y 8 años, a los que también inculca su profundo respeto por el medio ambiente.

Nuestro punto de encuentro fueron las nuevas instalaciones de la empresa, que a mí me daban la sensación de haber sido diseñadas de acorde a la mentalidad del hombre que empezaba a entrevistar.

Me hallaba en un edificio sostenible, con luz a raudales y persianas que se abrían o cerraban en función del recorrido del sol. Todo era blanco, grandioso y de enormes jardines verticales.

Desde allí, nos trasladamos a la Sierra Calderona a hacer la ruta que suele correr dos o tres veces a la semana, sino está de viaje.

¿Cuánto tiempo tarda en su recorrido matinal por estas montañas?

Normalmente salgo de casa a las 7:30 y mis cálculos son de unos 6 minutos o 6:30 por kilómetro porque es una zona rocosa. A las 8:15 sale el sol y diviso Valencia, el mar y la romana Sagunto.

Con tanto viaje, estoy segura de que ha vivido situaciones de peligro.

Quizá la peor situación la viví en Canadá, junto a mi mejor amigo, cuando tenía 20 y

“Todavía conservo la cicatriz que me hice con un hacha a los 20 años” pocos años. Estábamos acampados en una isla a la que habíamos llegado en kayak, y me hice una gran corte en la mano con un hacha cuando trataba de cortar leña. La localidad más próxima estaba a unos cuatro días de distancia y, por otro lado, nos era imposible

salir de allí sino remábamos los dos, y evidentemente yo no podía hacerlo. Tuvimos que permanecer en la isla varios días hasta que, a duras penas pude volver a remar.

Todavía conservo aquella cicatriz.

Suelo ser precavido e intento conocer los peligros del lugar. He navegado en kayak en la Patagonia pero era muy consciente de que si volcábamos, unos minutos en el agua eran suficientes para morir de hipotermia, tal y como le sucedió a Douglas Tompkins, fundador de North Face.

“Si tu kayak vuelca en la Patagonia, puede significar la muerte por hipotermia” ¿Cuál es el truco para que no te ataque un carnívoro de 200 kilos como un oso?

Consiste en cambiarte la ropa con la que has cenado y dejarla, junto con la comida, en un árbol. El oso se acercará a por ella y te dejará dormir felizmente en tu tienda de campaña.

Supongo que si ahora viaja con sus hijos, sobrevalorará más los riesgos.

Por supuesto, pero eso no conlleva no llegar a sitios lejanos. Ahora, en Argentina, durante seis días, estuvimos en una región donde no teníamos conexión a internet ni electricidad.

Vivíamos con la luz natural y a partir de las siete de la tarde utilizábamos un generador para poder cenar y ducharnos.

Dígame, ¿qué objeto es imprescindible en una mochila?

Una navaja suiza. Te puede salvar de muchas situaciones. ¿Qué se llevaría a una isla desierta?

A mi mujer y a mis tres hijos. Van todos en un pack. También algunas botellas de un vino alemán como el Riesling y algún vino tinto valenciano como Les Alcusses o cualquiera de las Bodegas Hispano+Suizas. (Risas) ¿Cuál es el punto más meridional del continente americano dónde ha llegado? ¿Y el lugar más alto?

localidad que está en el estrecho de Magallanes, donde conectan Pacífico y Atlántico, y tan sólo a unos 1.000 km. del continente antártico. Y el punto más alto fueron los 4.800 metros que se alcanzan en la ruta Salkantay hasta llegar a Machu Pichu y que cuesta 5 días y 4 noches y está catalogada como uno de los cinco mejores treks del mundo.

Mis nietos y los suyos, ¿conocerán los pingüinos de Punta Arenas o las ballenas de la Antártida?

Espero que sí, por el bien de la humanidad.

Todavía estamos a tiempo de actuar para salvar el planeta. ¿Cuál es su libro de cabecera en este momento?

Todo tiene ventajas y desventajas: con mi profesión, ser tan alto implica pasarlo mal en los aviones o pedir camas sin cabezal en hoteles, o si no queda otra, dormir en diagonal. (Risas) ¿Qué suele hacer los fines de semana?

Principalmente me dedico a disfrutar de la compañía de mi mujer y mis hijos. Los niños tienen unas agendas sociales muy ocupadas con los parques de bolas, los cumpleaños, etc. Si podemos nos escapamos hacia cualquier lugar de Teruel. Y también tenemos muchos amigos que nos visitan o visitamos. Somos muy activos, no solemos aburrirnos.

Es un libro de la escritora Susan Abulhawa, titulado ‘Amaneceres en Jenin’, que narra la historia de una familia palestina. El año pasado hicimos un viaje a Israel y Palestina y me interesa conocer el conflicto desde ambos puntos de vista. Está un poco en la misma línea que ‘Cometas en el cielo’ de Khaled Hosseini, que narra la invasión soviética de Afganistán, y que también me gustó mucho.

Su altura le hace un candidato perfecto para el baloncesto.

‘Backpacking’

Not everyone knows what it takes to sleep 100 metres away from an American black bear and not be attacked. Michael Brinkmann, the new CEO at SanLucar, does. His passion for nature comes from his childhood, when he spent the summers on one of the islands in the North Sea, close to Bremen, where he was born in 1977.

He studied Business Management and finished his MBA in the USA. Married to a BM graduate, with a PhD in Entrepreneurship, both of them share the same hobby. They spent the three months of their honeymoon with backpacks and a tent, travelling through villages and little-known routes in South America, where seeing a 2.03 metre tall white man caused a sensation.

Michael is a pleasant, cosmopolitan man, who has lived in South Africa, California and France, and has now spent the last five years in Spain. When I interviewed him, he had just arrived back from a holiday in Argentina, with his 3 children, aged 3, 6 and 8, to whom he is also instilling his deep respect towards the environment.

We met up at the company’s new installations, which to me seemed to have been designed in line with the mentality of the man who I had started to interview. I was in a sustainable building, flooded with light and blinds that opened or closed as the sun’s path crossed the sky. Everything was white, imposing and with enormous vertical gardens.

We went from there to the Sierra Calderona to travel the route he usually jogs two or three times a week, when he is not away on business.

How long does this morning route through the mountains take you?

What is your bedside book at the moment?

It is a book by the writer Susan Abulhawa, called ‘Mornings in Jenin’ that tells the story of a Palestinian family. Last year we travelled to Israel and Palestine and I am interested in discovering the conflict from both points of view. It is along the same lines as ‘The Kite Runner’ by Khaled Hosseini, which tells of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and that I also liked a great deal.

I usually leave home at 7.30 am and I estimate it takes me around 6 or 6 and a half minutes per kilometre because it is a rocky area. The sun comes up at 8.15 and I can see Valencia, the sea and the Roman town of Sagunto.

Travelling so much, I am sure you are bound to have experienced dangerous situations.

Perhaps the worst situation was in Canada, alongside my best friend, when I was in my early 20s. We were camped on an island we had reached by kayak and I cut my hand badly with an axe when I was trying to chop wood. The nearest town was four days away and it was just impossible for us to leave the island without both of us rowing and obviously, I couldn’t do this. We had to wait on the island for several days until I could just about row again. I still have the scar.

I am usually the cautious type, and try to find out about the dangers of a place. I have kayaked in Patagonia, but I was very aware that if we capsized, just a few minutes in the water were enough for us to die of hypothermia, as happened to Douglas Tompkins, the founder of NorthFace.

What is the trick to ensure that a 200 kilo carnivore such as a bear does not attack you?

It consists of changing the clothing that you were wearing while you ate your dinner and leaving it, along with the food, in a tree. The bear will go after it and will leave you to sleep happily in your tent.

I suppose that now, if you are travelling with your children, you will overcompensate for the risks.

Obviously, but this does not mean you can’t reach distant places. Just now, in Argentina, for six days we were in a region where we had no internet connection or electricity. We lived using the daylight hours and

from seven in the evening, we used a generator to be able to have dinner and shower.

Tell me, what is the essential object to keep in your backpack?

A Swiss army knife. It can save you from many situations.

What would you take to a desert island?

My wife and my three children. They all come in a pack. I would also take a few bottles of some German wine as Riesling and some Valencian red wine such as Les Alcusses or any from the Bodegas Hispano+Suizas. (Laughter) What is the southernmost point of the American continent you have reached? And the highest place?

I have reached Punta Arenas in Chile, a place that is on the Strait of Magellan, where the Pacific and the Atlantic meet up and just 1,000 km from the Antarctic continent. And the highest point was the 4,800 metres that are reached on the Salcantay route to Machu Pichu and that takes 5 days and 4 nights and is catalogued as one of the five best treks in the world.

Your height makes you perfect for playing basketball.

Although I have played basketball, my favourite sport is volleyball, and I can now play it on La Malavarrosa beach. Everything has its good points and its bad points: in my profession, being so tall means being uncomfortable on planes or asking for beds without headboards in hotels, or if there is no other alternative, sleeping diagonally. (Laughter) What do you usually do at weekends?

I mainly enjoy the company of my wife and children.

The children have very busy social diaries with ball parks, birthday parties, etc. If we can, we escape to somewhere in Teruel. And we also have many friends who visit us or whom we visit. We are very active; we don’t usually get bored.

Will my grandchildren and yours get to know the penguins at Punta Arenas or the whales in the Antarctic?

I hope so, for the sake of mankind. We are still in time to act to save the planet.
