The Arrival of the Holy Relic of St. John, the Short, to the Wilderness of Scetis. 4th September - 29th Mesra On this day also, in the year 515 A.D., the body of the great saint Anba John, the Short, was relocated from Al-Qulzum (Red Sea) to the wilderness of Scetis. When Pope John (Youhanna), 48th Pope of Alexandria, was in the wilderness of Scetis, some of the monks expressed their wish to relocate the relics of St. John, the Short, to his monastery. The Grace of God moved the Pope, and he wrote a letter by the hand of the Hegumen Kosman and Hegumen Boctor, from the elders, and sent them to Al-Qulzum. They were not able to take the body because it was in the hands of the followers of the Council of Chalcedon. So they returned empty handed. Shortly after, a prince from the Arabs took charge of AlQulzum, and he was a friend of Anba Michael, bishop of Epla›os. Once again the Patriarch wrote another letter to the bishop expressing his wish to take the body of St. John and to send it with the monks carrying his letter. The bishop rejoiced with the letter, and informed the prince about the wish of the Patriarch. The prince asked, «How could they reach the place?» His scribe answered him, «Let the monks put Arab garments over their own apparel, and let them come with us to the place.» The monks came in, along with the Arabs, to the place where the body was. The monks carried the body and walked all night until they came to Misr, and then went to the wilderness. The monks of the monastery of St. Macarius went out carrying crosses and censers and met them with songs and hymns. They brought the body of St. John to where the body of St. Macarius was. They poured many perfumes and fragrant oil over him, then carried him to his monastery while they were chanting. The monks of his monastery received him with joy and happiness. When Pope Mark (Marcus), 49th Patriarch, was ordained, and went to the wilderness with the bishops of Lower Egypt and some priests, he visited the monastery of this saint. He uncovered the holy relic of the saint, and he was blessed by it. He covered him with the sackcloth that was covering him, then wrapped him in fine linens. The monks praised and thanked God, and sang many hymns and songs for this holy father. May his prayers be with us and Glory be to our God forever. Amen. The Departure of St. Malachi, the Prophet. 5th September - 30th Mesra On this day, the great prophet, Malachi, one of the twelve minor prophets, departed. He prophesied about the return of the people from captivity in Babylon to Jerusalem. He rebuked the children of Israel because of their transgression against God and His Law. He also admonished them because of their vile offerings, and prophesied about the acceptance of the Gentiles when he said, «For from the rising of the sun, even to its

saying, “You shall not see us except in the age to come.” She understood their answer and returned to her town. Anba Poimen was a teacher, counselor, and comforter to the old and young men of the wilderness. Whenever tribulation or temptation befell anyone, he would come to him, and St. Poimen would cure him. This father left to us many profitable teachings such as: If you see a brother who has transgressed, despair not of him, but wake up his soul, comfort him, and lighten his burden, so that he may rise up from his fall. Teach your heart what your tongue says. One of the brethren said to him, “If I see a brother whose conduct is wicked, I do not feel comfortable to bring him to my cell. On the other hand, if his conduct is good, I rejoice and bring him to my cell cheerfully.” The saint replied, “If you treat well the brother who is good, then you must treat that brother whose works are inferior with a double portion of goodness, for he is sick and needs healing.” Then he told this brother, “There was a monk in a monastery, who had fallen into a transgression, and he was always weeping, and supplicating God saying, ‘O Lord, I have sinned against You, please forgive me.’ A voice came to him, ‘I have not forsaken you, except when you have forsaken your brother in the time of his trial.’” Anba Poimen also added, “If we cover over the sins of our brethren, God will cover over our sins. And if we make it known, God will do the same of our inequities.” Having finished his days and having arrived at a good old age that was pleasing to God, he departed in peace. May his prayers be with us and Glory be to our God forever. Amen. The Departure of St. Barsoma, the “Naked”. 10th September - 5th Nsie On this day also, in the year 133 A.M., the great saint who was perfect in the love of God, Anba Barsoma the “Naked” (El-Erian), departed. He was born in Misre (Cairo). His father called El-Wageeh Moufdel, was the scribe of the Queen “Shagaret El-dor”, and his mother was from the family of ElTaban. When his parents departed, his uncle took possession of all that they had left. Barsoma did not quarrel with him but forsook the world and lived the life of the righteous hermits. He lived outside the city for five years suffering the harshness of the summer heat and the winter cold. He wore no clothing except a hairy sackcloth, following the example of the Saint Anba Paul (Anba Paula), the first hermit. Then he shut himself in a cave inside the church of St. Marcurius Abu-Saifain for twenty years in ceaseless prayer and fasting, by day and night. There was a huge serpent in that cave. When he entered the cave and saw this serpent, he cried saying, “O my Lord Christ, the Son of the Living God, who gave us the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions and every power of the enemy. You granted healing to the children of Israel, who were bitten by the serpents, when they looked to the brass serpent. Now I look to you, O You Who was hanged on the Cross, so that you

might grant me power to be able to overcome this beast.” Then he made the sign of the cross over himself, and moved toward the serpent saying, “You trampled the serpent and the snakes, and You tread upon the lion and the dragon. The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life, of whom shall I be afraid?” Then he said to the serpent, “O blessed one stand still in your place,” and then he made the sign of the cross over it. He prayed to God and asked Him to remove the beastly nature from it. As he finished his prayer, the serpent changed its nature and became tame. The saint said to the serpent, “Henceforth, O blessed one, you shall not have power or might to harm any man, but you shall be subject and obedient to what I say to you.” The serpent manifested signs of submission and obedience, and became with the saint as the lion was with Daniel, the prophet, in the din. Then he left the cave and lived on the roof of the church. He endured the summer heat and the winter cold, until his skin became dark from much worship and asceticism. He remained in this state for fifteen years. During his days, a great persecution befell the Christian nation. The churches were shut and the Christians were forced to wear blue turbans. As for this saint, the ruler seized him, severely smote him, then cast him in prison. When he was released, he went to the monastery of El-Shahran, where he lived on the roof of the church and he increased in his asceticism. He did not replace his white turban. The rulers of that time from princes, judges and others, visited him and saw his white turban, but no one dared to force him to wear a blue one for they knew that the power of God was with him. The saint continually asked and supplicated God to take his anger away from His people. Having completed his strife, he departed at a good old age, in the year 133 A.M. He was then sixty years old, and was buried in the monastery of El-Shahran. May his prayers be with us. Amen. The Departure of the Righteous Amos, the Prophet. This day also marks, the departure of the righteous prophet Amos, one of the twelve minor prophets. He prophesied in the days of Uzziah, king of Judah, and Jeroboam the son of Joash, King of Israel. God had sent him to the children of Israel to caution them and advise them to bear fruit that befits repentance before the coming of the day of vengeance. He prophesied concerning the passion of the Lord and the darkness of the sun on that day. He also prophesied concerning the lamentation and sorrow which should come upon the children of Israel after this, how their festivals should be turned into days of sorrow, and their joy into weeping; how they should lack the help of God, and how they should hunger and thirst through the lack of teaching and knowledge, how they should be scattered in all countries among the nations. And all these things were fulfilled upon them. It was said that this prophet was killed because of his harsh rebuke for their sins. This prophet lived about eight hundred years before the advent of the Lord Christ. May his prayers be with us. Amen.

Meditations on the Holy Bible reading 5th Sunday of the Blessed month of mesra Luke 1: 26-38 “Rejoice, highly favoured one” Luke 1:28. Today is the 29 of the month of Mesra of the Coptic calendar, and every 29th day of all the Coptic months is a remembrance day for the Feast of Annunciation (the Feast of Annunciation is the 29th of Baramehat which normally occur during the great lent), however whenever the 29th of the month is a Sunday then the reading for this day is the Annunciation feast readings instead the usual readings for the 5th Sunday. The joyful tune is sung to celebrate the tribute to the Annunciation Feast. , so it is appropriate to talk about Our Lady the irgin St Mary, “The Full of Grace” (and not the bestowed the grace as sometime it is translated); foe truly she is St Mary the Virgin, Mother of God (The Theotokos). The true intercessor for all generations and the Mother who is ever virgin. We will detail in a succinct three points but will also discuss in details during the daily Liturgies conducted during the fast days. + Mother of God, The Theotokos: The Holy Bible bears witness to the motherhood of St Mary to God, in the annunciation of ArchAngel Gabriel to the Virgin (Mary), when he speaks of the Son to be borne by her is “The Holy, The son of the Highest and Son of God” therefore she is The Mother of God (The Theotokos) and her relative St Elizabeth attest to this saying “But why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me” Luke 1:43, Despite there are no outward signs and Elizabeth not knowing of St Mary’s pregnancy. The more amazing matter is the foetus kneeling with joy in St Elizabeth’s tummy as soon as soon as Elizabeth heard the greeting from the Virgin (ST Mary) for truly the one she is carrying is the Son of God. Many arguments and discussions is raised about the motherhood of our Lady The Virgin Mary and some rejected the title (Mother of God) which the Holy Bible attested that she is the Theotokos and one of those is Arius and his followers who denied the divinity of the Lord Christ and made Him not one with the Father in Essence and accordingly the Virgin gave birth to a mere human and she is not the Mother of God and of those who share this false view is the modern followers of Arius in the 21st century like Jehovah’s Witness who have returned after the church has in the 4th century

refuted (Arius’s) heresy to search in the tombs and exhume the bones old heresies; believing it is a new belief which Christianity has refused more than 15 centuries ago. Also, from those who have raise much argument in this matter are Nestor and his followers who preached of 2 persons in Christ and these 2 persons were united a figurative way but not in essence and with such a thought Nestor criticised the Magi (3 wise men of the east) for worshiping the Child Jesus since in their view they worshiped a human and not God. Nestor even taught that on the Cross the Divine departed from the Human as he saw that it is not becoming of the Divine to be present in Body who feels pain and with same measure the Virgin Mary has given birth to a human and accordingly cannot be called Mother of God! St Cyril the great the pillar of faith fought against this heresy which still has some followers till today. He held an ecumenical council in Ephesus in the year 431 AD and clarified the dangers of this heresy which within it’s belief it destroys the fundamentals of salvation totally and eliminates the mystery of God incarnate and makes the salvation performed by a human and God which is impossible in self and because of this the Church teaches the Virgin Mary is the Mother of God and her human body became like the wooden Ark of Covenant gilded with Gold which contained within it the two tablets of the Law without burning just like the burning bush which the Lord God appeared (to Moses) within it without being consumed by fire and thus St Mary became Holy and Pure when the Lord God incarnated within her body, just as who ever touched the Ark of Covenant or looked at the Ark became an aggressor against God deserving death, just like Uzzah who put his han to the Ark of the Lord and died (2 Samuel 6:6) and the people of Beth Shemesh who looked at the Ark before the priest covered it were struck down (1 Samuel 6:19). Again, Moses could not even come near the burning bush because it contained the Fire of the Divinity of God. Indeed she (St Mary) became Holy and deserves all veneration but is long praised by all generations, truly she has been elevated above the heavenly beings and more venerated than the angels and all the sains for she is the gate which Ezekiel has seen in the east, because the LORD God of Israel has entered by it; therefore it shall be shut (Ezekiel 44:2) and she is Jacob’s ladder which he saw in his dream;

joining heaven and earth and the discussion of the Virgin Mother of God leads us to the Pure Virgin with everlasting Virginity. + The Mother the Everlasting Virgin: The everlasting Virginity (of St Mary) not just a personal attribute of her but a Biblical fact containing our belief in the Lord Jesus Christ; because the Lord did not care what place He is born in but was very accurately defined the Virgin who became His Mother “ Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7), the Hebrew word Almah used by Isaiah means a young virgin who could be betrothed and the Hebrew language is very accurate and precise in this definitions as there are 2 other words which can be used but neither gives this precise definition of the word and the closed gate in the east which Ezekiel had seen (Ezekiel 44:1-2) is a definite attest to everlasting virginity of St Mary and guarded is the Lord to who ever touches the Ark of the Lord, the wooden Ark is a clear indication of the Lord’s design for the everlasting virginity of the Virgin (Mary). Often, when subject of the everlasting virginity is discussed; the mention of the Lord’s brothers is raised and whether they were His brothers from the Virgin Mary and according to the Church belief and faith in the everlasting Virginity of St Mary, this assertion is impossible and also the assertion that they were brothers from St Joseph the carpenter is also rejected according to the church traditions and belief since tradition of the church state that he was pure celibate man who never married. From our knowledge from the Jewish traditions and from the biblical descriptions of relatives, we discover that the Holy Bible has called many relatives as “brothers” and this goes for cousins from both father and mother and some time for nephews as Abraham called Lot his brother despite he (Lot) was his nephew and also Laban called Jacob his brother even though he was his daughters’ husband (Genesis 13:8 & 29:15). The Lords brothers in fact were sons of Mary wife of Clopas sister of St Mary the Virgin and there are many verses and evidence of this. Even the verse “till she had brought forth her firstborn Son” (Matthew 1:24), does not mean there

were other children born after Him. The first born according to the Bible is every child who is the first conceived. The Bible used similar expressions many times such as what is said of David’s wife that he has not known (consummated) her till she died and this does not mean he knew her after she died! Similarly, “The LORD said to my Lord, Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool” (Matthew 22:44), does not mean that He lifted the enemies from His footstool after He sat on His right! The 3rd subject which show our veneration of The Virgin (Mary) and our profession of her status and sainthood is her intersessions. + The True Intercessor for all of mankind: The intercession of the Virgin (Mary) is highest intercession for mankind before God; what is meant here is the intercession or the pleading for bestowing gifts but not the intercessions for forgiveness (of sins) which can not be fulfilled except by the Lord Jesus Christ who died as the intercessor for the all the world (mankind) sins. The intercession of the Virgin (Mary) is very clear in the miracle of changing the water to wine in Cana of Galilee and the trust of the Virgin (Mary) in her Son accepting her pleading which is clear from her saying “whatever He asks do” and it is the same as the intercession of Abraham for Abimelech’s wives and for the people of Sodom and Gomorrah. The intercession for intervention is the work of the triumphant saints with God’s people who are striving for the kingdom of heavens and the actual part we can offer in prayers and pleadings for our selves as the souls of those under the Altar who cry to the Lord to avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth (Revelations 6:9) It is the prayers of the saints which is raising like incense before God which God receives with joy. The Virgin (Mary) is interceding on our behalf before the Lord and she is quick to help God’s children. She is the one who saved St Matthias form the prison and melted all the iron in the whole city and she is the one who saved the church at Atrib Hill (Atreeb a town in lower Egypt near Banha), and interceded for the whole church in the miracle of shifting the Mokattam mountain, She is the one who appeared in her church in Zeitoun for many months interceding on behalf of our beloved land and pleading for our church and the whole world. May the loving Lord accepts her pleadings and prayers which is a chosen pure incense before the Lords’ Throne on our behalf always.

The Sermon of His Holiness Pope Tawadros II in Wednesday’s meeting August 17th, 2022 Messages given in hardship times ‫ مدرس مساعد بكلية الطب جامعة المنيا‬- ‫ ماريان فؤاد‬.‫ د‬:‫ترجمة‬ Today I want to talk to you about some of the messages that can be given to us in times of trouble. A person in his life is exposed to many hardships, they may be simple or difficult, short-term or long-term. How do we face it in a healthy Christian way? not with words, rumors and despair. How do we act in cases of distress? St. Paul the Apostle in his Epistle to the Romans, chapter 12, put for us a set of phrases and verses that help us chart our steps in times of trouble. I have chosen only one verse in which there are three stations that help us how to face hardships. “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer” (Romans 12:12) (1) Be joyful in hope: The primary sign of hope is joy. The Christian is always joyful in all circumstances, even in the hour of facing death. Death raises man to heaven, and we pray saying that “it is not death for your servants, but rather a transition.” I remember that the late Pope Shenouda said about death that it is the golden bridge that transports man from the earthly state to the heavenly one. Joy is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit “love, joy, peace…”, rather it is the first fruit of the work of the Holy Spirit in a person’s life based on love. Be joyful, this is a message of hope and not despair, because the war that fights man is the war of despair, and that man loses when he loses hope. Therefore, St. Paul tells us, “Rejoice in hope.” Also, the joy of man in the face of hardships is due to the main source of joy, which is the resurrection of the Lord Christ, as happened to the three Marys on the morning of Easter Sunday. When your heart becomes filled of distress, remember the joy of Christ given to you and remember eternity, which is the hope of every human being. One of the beautiful signs in our Coptic Church is that we frequently chant the word “Hallelujah” (Hallelujah to God), a sign of joy, as if the Church teaches us through its prayers and praises that it creates in us a person of Hallelujah, a person of joy. Do not forget that joy is a sign of spiritual health. A person with true faith and a heart full of Christ is always joyful. However, Christ is not in the heart of the person who utters lies and expressions of doubt and despair. Such person takes away hope, and makes you drown in a state of lies, troubles and pain, and misses your joy. Our brothers who preceded us to heaven in the incident of Saint Philopater Church in Imbaba, they were attending the liturgy, and whoever comes to attend the liturgy comes willingly, ready to receive communion, and Christ said, “He who eats my body and drinks my blood abides in me and I am in him.” Then, Christ and the perseverance of Christ in you is the reason for joy. “Rejoicing in hope.” When you raise your heart and eyes toward Christ, you find hope, and when you find it, your heart would be filled with joy. We have hope in the hand of Christ and in the work of Christ and His outstretched hand on the cross for the sake of man. When we read about the martyrs, we find them advancing to death in a state of joy, and I remember our sons, the martyrs of Libya, and so they were. There are hardships, but there is joy in hope, and if we have beloved children, old or young, who have moved on hope, we bid them farewell to the hope of resurrection. Our Christianity is not the Christianity of grief. We Christians have a special joy, and no one can take away the joy of Christ from within us. (2) Patient in affliction: Patience here means not to fall into the cesspool of despair or doubt. In tribulations, Satan tries to hesitate your faith in the love of God, and in the love of others. Beware, my beloved. Remember with me saint joseph and the hardships he was exposed to, but he was patient in the tribulation and the end was that he became the second to Pharaoh in Egypt and saved Egypt from famine. Tribulation produces patience, and through your patience you acquire yourselves. St. Paul says that “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[i] have been called according to his purpose”(1).

Some may ask: What good is the burning of the church and the death of many? But the bible confirm that all things work together for good, we may not know now what this good is, but we believe that the commandment is true, and that faith is present. We love God no matter what kind of hardships we suffer, no matter how much we suffer for the separation of loved ones, and no matter what kind of troubles a person falls into. Tell him: “I love you, Lord, and know that I am your son (or daughter), and that your eye is upon me, you hold my hand in the midst of tribulation, and that even if I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I fear no evil because you are with me.” And the Bible is full of stories of those who went through hardships. Indeed, the Lord Christ said to us: “In the world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” He also said: “With your patience you gain yourselves.” Christ bought our souls with his blood, and we purchase our souls with patience. In the Book of Revelation, we read this beautiful phrase: “Here is the patience of the saints.” Eternity is filled with the saints who lived with patience and were crowned with this patience. The tribulations that we encounter in our lives make crowns in our lives. I am in pain with all our loved ones who left our world to live with Christ, in pain for those who lost a loved one or dear one, but we have enough faith that we will see them in eternity, and that we entrust them to Christ, as if we entrusted an entire church full of the old and the young, the man and the woman, we entrusted them all to Christ. It is true that the situation is painful and tiring, and the incident is tragic, but we have hope, we are rejoicing in hope and patient in tribulation. Patience in tribulation always makes man ready for eternity, for he who lives on earth without hardships cannot think of eternity. Tribulation teaches us to raise our hearts and eyes to heaven, and to ask for the consolations of Christ. (3) Faithful in prayer: As for the third and permanent step, it is “Faithful in prayer.” Our persistence in prayer in times of relief or distress, at the beginning and end of your life. Those who left our world in the last accident they were in the state of prayer, and prayer is the safety valve in joy and in distress. In joy I pray and thank the Lord, and in distress I pray and thank the Lord and ask for His help. When a person stands to pray and raises his eyes to heaven and his heart towards Christ, and feels that he is communicating with him, listens: I hear you, speak and express what is inside you. Every time we pray, we sanctify our lives and the hours of our lives. We elicit joy from Christ. At the end of the liturgy, the priest says: “Our mouth is filled with joy, and our tongue is rejoicing.” And when we go to church, we sing: «I was glad when they told me to go to the house of the Lord.» Prayer is the most powerful helper for a person at the time of pain. Prayer purifies the senses and purifies the heart. David the Prophet says: “Beloved is your name, O Lord, for it is my recitation throughout the day.” He says this despite many hardships he faced in his life. Prayer is a source of consolation in tribulations, and a source of joy in tribulations. It is what comforts, and it is what makes man happy, and it is what helps man to go through these sufferings in his life. We are having hard time due to the accident of the Imbaba Church and the death of our loved ones who went to heaven and became in the arms of Christ. We suffer greatly, but this pain has a special situation because of our hope in Christ, our patience in tribulation, and our persistence in prayer. In the Gospel of our teacher John, the Lord says: “Ask, and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.”(2) This is the Christian in the face of the hardships he faces in his life. We are comforted by the word of God and by the hand of Christ, and our eyes are always lifted to heaven. May Christ our God protect you, comfort the hearts of all, remember His Church, remember His work, and guard us from all afflictions. I offer my condolences to all, and I also extend my thanks to all who have supported us in this tribulation. May God protect everyone. To our God be all glory and honor from now and forever, Amen.
