I first moved to Southlake right before my senior year and graduated from Carroll — what feels like a lifetime ago. Which, in a way, it was, considering Town Square didn’t exist yet. It was, as my kids say, “back in the late 1900s.”

Since then, life has taken me through more than a few unexpected turns, including stints in Austin, New York, London, and Warsaw. Yet three years ago, I found myself back in Southlake. This time, not as a student, but as a mother and, today, the editor of Southlake Style. In many ways, it feels like a second act. Or third. Maybe fourth?

I’ve had the privilege of helping shape this magazine for the past two years, but writing to you from this page feels like a new chapter of its own. It also feels especially fitting with this month’s cover story about reinvention and the things that can happen when you’re open to possibilities.

The Southlake I returned to is both familiar and completely new. Now, my kids walk the halls of Carroll schools, and I’m seeing this community through an entirely new lens. What I’ve found is a place more fascinating and nuanced than I remembered, shaped by people whose stories are deeply worth telling.

Case in point: Larry Wells. After more than three decades building custom gates, Larry found himself stepping into an entirely different world: the face of a national brand, acting in Taylor Sheridan’s television universe, and, now, film producing. An unexpected plot twist, sure. But Larry would be the first to tell you it isn’t just luck. “Luck,” he says, “is when opportunity meets persistence and patience.”

That feels true of Southlake, too.

Through Southlake Style, I get to rediscover this city every day — not just the Southlake I remember from, ahem, the late 1900s, but the evolving community Mike and Nicole Tesoriero built this magazine to celebrate. This issue carries that spirit beyond the cover feature, including our Q&A with Jen Morgan, whose book “50 & Friendless” explores friendship, life transitions, and starting again. Stories like these are exactly why I’m grateful to do this work.

Carroll’s Nationally-Recognized Jazz Program Honored in NYC

F

or the eighth time in program history, Carroll Senior High School proved its jazz pedigree on a global stage.

The Dragon Jazz Band traveled to New York City in April for the renowned Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival, returning home with multiple honors celebrating both ensemble excellence and standout individual talent.

Hosted by Jazz at Lincoln Center, the prestigious festival is widely considered the pinnacle of high school jazz education. Each year, only a select group of elite programs from around the world earn invitations to perform, making Carroll’s repeated inclusion a remarkable achievement. For student jazz musicians, Essentially Ellington represents one of the most competitive and respected stages in the country.

Under the direction of David Lown, Carroll once again

demonstrated why its program is consistently regarded among the nation’s best.

The Dragons earned the festival’s Outstanding Pep Section award, recognizing the band’s energy, cohesion and overall performance atmosphere throughout the weekend. Carroll’s trumpet section also received an Honorable Mention in the brass category, placing it among the top-performing sections at the event.

Several Carroll musicians earned individual recognition as well. Joshua Hayden received an Honorable Mention for Bass, while Julia Fisk earned an Honorable Mention for Clarinet. Michael Fradkin was named Outstanding Doubler for his work on both alto and tenor saxophone.

A

t Feedstore BBQ, the walls don’t just hold photos: they hold stories. Longtime regulars, community staples, snapshots of a place woven into Southlake’s identity.

Inside the “Barrel Room,” walls strewn with family photos, is a frame featuring a weathered cowboy in period costume on the set of Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone” prequel, “1883” and a campaign image of a rugged cowboy pulled from a national brand shoot. A face you kind of recognize.

That face belongs to Larry Wells.

He gestures toward it with a quiet kind of disbelief. It’s not false modesty, but genuine wonder at how he ended up there.

“I asked Mike why he put that picture in the family room,” Wells says. “He said, ‘Because you are family.’”

Wells and Feedstore owner Mike Lafavers have been friends for nearly 25 years, long before the commercials and film sets, before anyone stopped him for a photo.

Like so many things in Wells’ life, it didn’t start as a plan. It started with relationships and an instinct to say yes when opportunity showed up. It started here.

A LIFE BUILT BY HAND Before he ever stepped in front of a camera, Larry spent more than three decades building something far less visible, but no less meaningful.

A gate. Then another. And another.

"I started the business out of necessity," he says. "I couldn't find anyone to fix my own gate.

The origin goes back further than that.

Larry was building big homes in Argyle and Southlake, including one he built for his own family on Lake Drive in the early 90s, and kept running into the same problem. The gates he installed would break, and nobody could fix them. So, he started tinkering. Got shocked a few times. Figured it out.

"I've always been fascinated by [gate] electronics," he says. "And it turns out, very few people can do what we do. Electricians won't touch them. Most garage door companies say they can't fix them either."

What began as a practical problem turned into a thriving gate automation company serving thousands of customers across North Texas. The business grew steadily – never through advertising, always through trust.

"Our advertising budget is basically stickers," he laughs. "A sticker that says 'for service call…' with my phone number — that's our

budget for the year. But we take care of people.

If they need a part, we sell them a part. If they don't need a part, we tell them."

Over time, his son came into the fold, albeit reluctantly at first "He said, 'Dad, I don't think you have enough to keep me busy,'" Larry recalls.

"He's looked back over 12 years and said, 'I really regret saying that.' Through the pandemic, through everything, we've never missed a day."

Today, his son manages the day-to-day operations, allowing Larry to step into something entirely unexpected: a second career that didn't even begin until his mid-60s.

“Luck is when opportunity meets persistence and patience.”

DISCOVERED AT 65 Wells doesn't use the word "reinvention."

He prefers something simpler.

"Fate," he says.

At 65, after decades of running a successful business, Larry was discovered in a place he had visited countless times: a Tractor Supply store. He was a regular — someone who knew the products and the people well. That authenticity didn't go unnoticed.

An agent reached out, inviting him to appear in a video.

"I thought, why not? Let's try it."

That one opportunity changed everything.

Tractor Supply saw something in Larry, a presence that felt genuine, grounded and distinctly Texan, and leaned into it. After the first shoot, one of their VPs pulled him aside.

"He said, 'You're the new Tractor Supply guy,'" Larry recalls. "And I said, 'What does that mean?'"

It meant print ads. Menswear campaigns for their magazines and online catalog. A commercial shot specifically for the Yellowstone series, which they flew him to Maine to film.

And eventually, a voiceover contract that made him the literal voice of one of America's most recognizable rural brands.

"They kept saying, 'You need to be doing voiceover,'" he says. "So I did."

He pauses.

"I had a woman text me recently. She said, 'I just heard you on three different radio stations.' That made my day."

Today, Larry anchors fi e active Tractor Supply commercials, not just on camera, but narrating all of them. It's a portfolio most actors spend decades trying to build.

The next chapter came just as unexpectedly.

The same agent who connected him with Tractor Supply encouraged him to pursue a role in a new Western filming in Fort Worth: “1883,” part of Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan's expanding universe.

“I’m looking around that room thinking, 'How did I get here?’”

Larry made some calls, got connected with Legacy Casting, and found himself on the phone being offered two options: stand-in work for Sam Elliott, which would have meant six months away from the gate business, or a featured deputy role.

He took the deputy.

What followed was the kind of moment you don't fully process until later. Larry found himself in a room "not much bigger than this," he says, gesturing around Feedstore’s Barrel Room, with Sam Elliott, Billy Bob Thornton and Tim McGraw, all in costume, waiting for the next take.

"I'm looking around that room thinking, ‘how did I get here?’" he says. "Really think about it."

Between takes, he watched Thornton sit at the Marshal's desk, script resting in his lap, quietly running his lines while Tim McGraw lobbed “Bad Santa” jokes at him from across the room. But the moment they called action, Thornton was simply, completely on.

"He'll tell you, 'I'm just a country boy from Arkansas,'" Larry says. "But when it's time to work, he's the consummate professional."

And then there was Sam Elliott.

"Between takes, Sam and I sat on a park bench outside for 45 minutes," Larry recalls.

"Just talking. He's telling me about his 50-year career. I'm telling him I'm really new, but I sure do like it."

He shakes his head slowly.

"Who else gets to do that?"

BUILDING MOMENTUM After “1883,” opportunities began to stack.

Commercials. Modeling. Voiceover work.

Additional roles within Sheridan's universe, including “1923.” A small role on “Yellowstone” itself: Larry plays a background cowboy, and you can't see his face.

"I don't even tell people about that one," he says, laughing.

There was a Chase Bank commercial. A campaign for UT Southwestern. A modeling gig at the Statler Hotel in downtown Dallas for J. Hilbern suits — where Larry, at 69, found himself on a runway alongside a 35-year-old model who stood six-foot-four.

"I had to go back in that dressing room and give myself a little talk," he says. "'How many other 69-year-old guys get paid to do this?

Suck it up and go.'" He grins. "I did fine."

A blockchain commercial that landed him on red-carpet security detail for Dak Prescott at a Cowboys game. A chance encounter with Kevin Costner on the “Yellowstone” set, who

walked over between takes and shook his hand.

He admits, “I was a little starstruck just to be acknowledged."

Larry also committed to honing his craft, taking acting workshops with respected coach Roni Hummel and leaning on his son — a trained linguist — to help him master a British accent for an upcoming medieval shoot at Capernaum Studios.

"I've got fi e lines," he says. "I'll be fine."

FROM ACTOR TO PRODUCER If acting was unexpected, producing was even more so.

A few years ago, a friend he'd met through a Kubota commercial, filmmaker Jeff Tucker, mentioned a traveling Christian singer who needed a music video but couldn't afford one.

Larry stepped in financially and logistically.

"I don't know much about production," he says. "But I knew how to help."

That video, “Power of a Second Chance” by Justin Todd Harrod, went on to win Video of the Year at the Inspirational Country Music Awards in Nashville. It's been viewed millions of times on YouTube.

Now Larry is applying that same instinct to a larger project: “Anderson County,” an independent film currently shooting in East Texas.

The film tells the true story of game wardens killed in the line of duty, which is a subject he feels personally connected to.

Larry’s not just producing it. He holds a lead role, and his twin brother Gary plays his on-screen brother ("The director said it feels so real — and I told him, well, we're just two brothers talking"), and Larry has recently been asked to narrate the film as well.

"That's going to be a new challenge," he says. "I'm up for it."

“Anderson County” is expected to hit theaters this fall.

CONNECTIONS AND COWBOYS Along the way, Larry has built relationships with some of the most respected names in Western film — not through strategy, but through showing up in the right places over many years.

Through his work with the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, he became friends with actors Buck Taylor and Barry Corbin. He serves as Corbin's personal security at select appearances. And when Corbin was inducted into the Texas Veterans Hall of Fame — joining the ranks of Audie Murphy, Roger Staubach and Ross Perot — it was Larry who delivered the introduction.

"Six minutes, talking about his life story," he says. "His wife called and said, 'Larry, we want you to do it.' I was so humbled he asked me."

He met Kevin Costner on the set of Yellowstone. Met Taylor Sheridan at the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame. Sat with an old Four Sixes ranch cowboy named Boots O'Neill and listened to a lifetime of stories.

"They're just people, too," he says. "They really are."

A DIFFERENT KIND OF SUCCESS Ask Larry what drives him, and his answer is simple.

"It's about people," he says.

His daughter manages his talent account. His son runs the gate company Wells spent decades building. His twin brother has a speaking role in Anderson County. And his 16-month-old granddaughter, Landry Cline Heath, has already found her place in the family lore. Her middle name is a nod to Patsy Cline, whose songs were part of the soundtrack of Wells’ truck when his children were growing up.

"I get to interact with my kids on a daily or weekly basis because of what I do," he says.

"That, to me, is success."

And then there's the legacy.

Driving down to East Texas a few weeks ago for a shoot, Larry turned to his brother Gary and put it simply: “Think about what we're leaving behind. They'll be able to look at this 20 years from now and say, that's my grandpa.”

In a culture that often frames aging as decline, Larry offers a different narrative. One of expansion.

At 70, he's not slowing down. He's got a table read coming up for an undisclosed film.

A TV series in development with a Kansas filmmaker. The Anderson County narration still ahead of him. A medieval shoot at Capernaum Studios. A Purple Heart event at the Stock Show. And those Tractor Supply commercials are still running nationally.

Last September, he drove to Bastrop, Texas, to speak to a room of about 100 aspiring actors and actresses. He told them his story. And then he told them something else.

"There are a lot of people out there better looking than I am," he said. "A lot more qualified, a lot more experienced. I dare any of you to try to outwork me."

He's also taken that message beyond the film world, speaking to seniors in particular about pushing past comfort zones and chasing something new.

"Don't sit around and get old," he says.

"It's inevitable that we age. But don't be afraid to try something."

THE LUCKIEST GUY AROUND Larry will tell you he's been lucky.

But listen a little longer, and you realize his definition of luck is anything but passive.

"Luck is when opportunity meets persistence and patience," he says.

It's a formula he's lived, from tinkering with a broken gate in the early days of his career to sitting on a park bench with Sam Elliott between takes on a film set in Fort Worth. From Feedstore BBQ customer to face on the wall.

He tells a story about a recent Sunday lunch — alone at Feedstore, late afternoon — when co-owner Matt Lafavers’s wife came over with a group of friends and asked if they could get a picture with him. He obliged, of course. But the look on his face when he recounts it says everything.

“That’s so foreign to me,” he says, smiling.

“I just don’t get it.”

And yet that’s exactly the point. For this man, who is now the face of a national brand, but still frequents the same local lunch spot he’s been coming to for 25 years, the second act didn't just arrive. He stepped into it. And he's just getting started.

“It’s inevitable that we age.

home STYLE So Not Vanilla Warmth and Character Define Home Design in 2026

T

he future of home design is looking warmer, richer, and a lot less predictable. After years of gray palettes, white walls, and copy-paste interiors, homeowners are leaning into spaces that feel unmistakably personal.

Color is still having a moment, but in 2026, it is less about shock value and more about atmosphere. Deep reds, aubergine, earthy taupes, soft greens, and warm neutrals are replacing the cold grey finishes that dominated the past decade. Instead of a single accent wall, designers are seeing more fully enveloped spaces, with color wrapping across walls, trim, ceilings, and even furnishings.

“We call it telling a color story,” interior designer Anita Hubbard says. “It envelops the space and makes it feel cocooned, which people are really leaning toward in their homes.”

Materials are getting warmer, too. Natural stone, wood grain, wallpaper, and textured finishes are bringing depth back into rooms that once felt overly polished.

Countertops are becoming showpieces, often extending vertically behind a range hood or wrapping into a backsplash for a more custom, continuous look. Lighting is also moving beyond function, with sculptural fixtures acting more like art than afterthoughts.

Even floor plans are evolving. The open-concept layout is not disappearing, but homeowners are craving more definition, with flexible rooms that can shift with real life.

“People want more efficient use of space,” Hubbard says. “There’s more delineation — foyers, dedicated offices, playrooms — rather than everything bleeding into one big room.”

Local Realtor David Stoltzman sees the same shift showing up in the market. “Theater rooms, for example, are making a surprising comeback,” he says. “Not necessarily for movies. People love having a separate, flexible space they can use how they want ” At the heart of the 2026 home is a simple idea: timeless does not have to mean boring. The most current spaces are layered, livable, and full of personality, whether that comes through a saturated dining room, a sculptural light fixture, a bold stone surface or a room designed around the way a family actually lives.

“Design isn’t about being loud,” Hubbard says. “It’s about balance.”

Maroma Brings Polished Coastal Mexican Flavors to Oak Lawn

outhlake already knows Omar Flores. As the chef behind Muchacho, one of Town Square’s most beloved dining spots, Flores has built a loyal following among diners who appreciate Mexican cuisine that feels vibrant, spicy, and deeply craveable. With Maroma, his newest concept on Oak Lawn Avenue in Dallas’ Design District, he gives those same fans a fresh reason to point the car toward Dallas — preferably with enough time to relax on the restaurant’s glorious new patio.

Opened in May, Maroma brings Flores’ culinary voice into sharper, more coastal focus, with a seafood-forward menu shaped by citrus, live fire and

From there, the menu moves toward the warmth of the grill. Jumbo prawns arrive mesquite-grilled with gochujang adobo, chile butter, and mojo verde.

Sea Bream A La Talla comes with black beans, arroz verde and fresh corn tortillas, while the Spanish Octopus A La Brava and composed red snapper plates reflect Flores’ balance of coastal tradition and modern precision. The space itself reinforces the mood. At 3,800 square feet, Maroma seats roughly 150 guests across its dining room and patio. Natural materials, layered textures, and soft lighting create a room that feels warm and serene. The restaurant embraces what the team calls a “Daylight to Dusk” philosophy, aka bright and social by day, more intimate and magnetic as evening sets in, with lighting that softens and music that deepens as the night progresses.

The patio may be Maroma’s quiet showpiece: a fully temperature-controlled, year-round terrace framed by lush Bird of Paradise greenery and sleek C-shaped booths that are ideal for shared seafood plates and ordering just one more of those agave-forward cocktails.

Maroma joins Big Dill Hospitality’s growing portfolio alongside Muchacho, Casa Brasa, and Even Coast. But this concept feels less like an extension and more like an evolution featuring a sharper, seafood-driven iteration of what the group does best.

For Southlake fans of Muchacho, Maroma offers a more refined lens on Flores’ approach. For everyone else, it is an elegant introduction. House of Toro Charges into Westlake with Bold Design and Latin Traditions House of Toro is much more than your average hotel restaurant — and that’s no accid ent. Established inside the newly transformed Marriott Solana, the Westlake chophouse arrived this April with a distinct design and a menu that leans into Spanishaccented steakhouse bravado. It’s polished, poised, and paced for a night with good company.

The setting has history. Back in the early 1990s, the Marriott helped anchor IBM’s 900-acre campus, long before Southlake had a hotel scene of its own.

Following a multimillion-d ollar transformation this spring, the property has been reborn as The Ricardo Marriott, a nod to original architect Ricardo Legorreta. For locals who may never check in, House of Toro is a compelling reason to come see what’s changed.

Immed iately upon entering the House of Toro, you are struck by its Latin spirit. Plush crimson velvet seating and dark wood paneling are set off with strategically moody ambient lighting that showcase

its many rich red accents, pinpointed throughout by several matad or themed portraits. It all creates an upscale and intimate setting that had us consid ering after-dinner drinks well before taking our seats.

The walk to our table gave ample opportunity to check out the serious bar scene, which comes alive with piano music on busier nights. If this bar has a signature d rink, it's The Matad or Old Fashioned mad e with Horse Sold ier Bourbon. We went all in and ordered it smoked tableside. Those looking for something lighter will be well served with Ibiza Nights that combines Hendricks Gin with lime, mint, and cucumber for a refreshing start to a bold menu.

Smart d iners should come hungry as there are some can’t-miss sides like the Lobster Cargot (Maine lobster and melted Havarti served with crostini) and hand -cut bacon by the slice that is a total sensory overload — soft and sweet with just the right amount of char and chew.

Main entrees are the work of executive chef Joe Riojas and chef de cuisine Nate Sanders. They offer surf and turf options that are equally deserving of your appetite.

Scallops and whole branzino will ensure something for everyone, but on this night, the prime butcher selections were impossible to resist. Sorry Perry’s fans, but Chef Nate’s Iberico Pork Chop — made with heritage acorn-fed Spanish pork and finished with a sherry lacquer — is the best you’re going to get this side of DFW Airport.

Sophisticated steakhousers also can’t go wrong with either the 18oz Delmonico Ribeye (medium rare, of course) or a 10oz bone-in filet dripping in house-made sauces like bone marrow butter, mojo verde, or a subtle yet staunch blue cheese brûlée.

After d inner, keep the Latin vibe going well into the night with an extensive list of port wines aged up to 40 years. Or, opt like we did for a Spanish Coffee, where the bright orange notes of Cointreau were the main attraction even when served alongsid e a hearty slice of their signature chocolate cake.

By breathing a new, fiery life into what is already a crowded area steakhouse scene, House of Toro is well on its way to becoming a d estination within a d estination.

On this night, it wasn’t easy walking out without staying for a nightcap, but we’ll be back for another unhurried, fl vor-driven meal where the legacy of a master designer meets the precision of master grillers.

J

en Morgan has never been afraid to laugh at herself, even when life isn't funny. The Cincinnati-born author, speaker, and certified grief coach has built her life's work around the kind of honesty most people reserve for their closest friends. Now living in Southlake with her husband Kevin, Jen has channeled decades of personal loss, friendship upheaval, and hardwon self-reflection into two books, a thriving coaching practice, and an upcoming podcast. Her latest book, ”Fifty & Friendless: Table for One Please,” is exactly what it sounds like: a warmhearted, unflinching look at what it means to know yourself, rebuild your circle, and embrace the table for one.

I COME FROM A LONG LINE OF… big personalities. I'm the youngest of nine kids, born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. I've always been surrounded by people — family, friends, noise, laughter. Being alone wasn't really something I ever practiced. It took me a long time to get comfortable with it, and honestly, that discomfort became the book.

MY WORK IS ROOTED IN… storytelling and faith. My fir t book, “Bring It On,” is really an introduction to my story — how faith carried me through a lot of trauma and loss, and how I learned to use my experience to lift other women up.

GRIEF, FOR ME, IS… deeply personal. I don't believe in the stages. I've lost three brothers and two of my closest friends. Grief has just been a thread through my life. So when I work with someone, whether as a coach or just as a friend, I meet them exactly where they are. If she wants to cry over wine and talk it through all night, I'm there. If she wants to go to dinner and forget about it for one evening, I'm her girl for that, too.

THE TITLE “FIFTY & FRIENDLESS” CAME FROM… my husband, actually. He has this very dry sense of humor, and during a rough couple of years after my 50th birthday — when friendships were shifting and I was grieving in more ways than one — he started calling me "No Friend Jen." And then my niece said I should name the book “Fifty and Friendless.” I thought that is catchy. And it makes people ask questions, which is exactly what I want.

WHAT THE BOOK IS REALLY ABOUT IS… the mirror. My fir t chapter is called that. Before you go looking for better friends, you have to look

at yourself and ask: What do I crave? And am I being her? If you want loyalty, are you loyal? If you want fun, are you fun? That self-reflection is where everything starts. I had to do a lot of that work myself, and it changed everything.

LEARNING TO SIT ALONE AT A TABLE… did not come naturally to me. At fir t, I was sure everyone was staring, wondering why I was there by myself.

But eventually, I realized I was just — present. With myself. A glass of wine, maybe a book, maybe just people-watching. Now I love it. It's about being comfortable enough in your own company that you don't always need a crowd.

FINDING NEW FRIENDS AFTER 50 MEANS… doing things a little outside your comfort zone, but things that are actually yours. A cooking class. An art class. A women's retreat. In 2022, I signed up for a trip to Italy with 14 women I had never met. I didn't know a single one of them. It was one of the best experiences of my life.

THE COMMUNITY I WANT TO BUILD… is one where women feel like they can bring all of it — the grief and the laughter, the loss and the comeback. I want to speak at women's events, lead retreats, and host workshops. My partner and I are working on a podcast and retreat series called “Grief, Grace & The Glow Up,” and I'm so excited about it. Grief doesn't get the last word. That's the whole point.

AT THE HEART OF EVERYTHING I DO IS… the belief that you are never as alone as you feel.

We all go through seasons where the circle gets smaller, where people you counted on aren't there anymore, where you have to rebuild. But there is beauty in that. There is purpose in it. My job is just to remind women of that — and to make them laugh a little along the way.

Southlake Marks America’s 250th with a Red, White, and Boom

F

or many Southlake families, the start of Fourth of July weekend means lawn chairs in the trunk, kids waving glow sticks through Town Square and neighbors gathering beneath a sky filled with fireworks.

This summer, that tradition returns once again as Stars and Stripes takes over Southlake Town Square on Friday, July 3.

The annual celebration has become one of Southlake’s favorite hometown traditions — a place where patriotism, community and summer nostalgia all meet in one warm Texas evening. Families will fill the square for live music, food trucks, sweet treats, and plenty of red, white, and blue fun leading up to the night’s grand finale fireworks and drone sho This year’s entertainment lineup includes performances

by The Inspiration Band and “Fire and Heart,” a tribute show honoring iconic women of rock. Kids can enjoy games, activities, and strolling entertainers while parents catch up with friends and neighbors under the lights of Town Square.

As the sun sets and patriotic music drifts through the air, the celebration shifts into the kind of moment many Southlake residents look forward to every year — blankets spread across the lawn, little ones covering their ears before the first boom and families pausing together to watch the sky light up in red, white, and blue.
