TheMostReverendMichaelF.Burbidgeis requestingprayersforoneofourseminarians, PhilipJohnson.Philipjustcompletedhisrstyear ofPre-TheologyatSt.CharlesBorromeoSeminary inPhiladelphia.AgraduateoftheU.S.Naval Academy,PhilipservedtwoyearsintheNavy, havingbeengrantedadischargein2009whenhe wasdiagnosedwithaninoperablebraintumor.

InOctober2008,whileservingonashipnear Bahrain,Philipbegandevelopingproblems.His roommate,whowasaCatholicchaplain,noticeda seizurePhilipexperiencedduringhissleep.Asa result,heunderwentanMRI,whichrevealeda massdevelopinginhisbrain.

“IknowmanypeoplewouldgetmadatGod receivingthiskindofnews,”Philipsaid.“Ididn’tget mad.Igotsad.IwenttoasmallCatholicchapelon thenavalbaseinBahrainandcried,unsureofwhat thefutureheld.”

TheNavyassignedhimtoNorfolktoundergo furthermedicaltests.InJanuary2009,abiopsywas performed,theresultsofwhichindicatedcancer. Thatmeantanautomaticmedicaldischargefrom theNavy,whichoccurredseveralmonthslater.

PhilipmetagainwithBishopBurbidge,sharingwith himthestatusofhisillness.Henotedthatdoctors, whileacknowledgingtheseriousnessofhisillness, couldnotgiveadenitiveprognosisandthathis agewasinhisfavor.“BishopBurbidgetoldmehe wouldnotgetinGod’swayifIwantedtoanswer thecalltoPriesthood,”Philipsaid.

InApril2009,hebeganundergoingradiationfor thetumorandchemotherapy.

HavingbeengiventheassurancebyPhilip’s physiciansthathecouldparticipatefullyinthe seminaryformationprogramwithoutany detrimentaleffectstohishealth,BishopBurbidge acceptedhimintoformationforthePriesthood,

andheenteredSt.CharlesBorromeoSeminaryin August2009.
