A SUMMER THAT LASTS A LIFETIME! Although summer camp might take place anywhere from one to eight weeks, at Frost Valley we create moments and experiences that last a lifetime.

While here in the picturesque and serene Catskill Mountains, Frost Valley campers have an opportunity often overlooked in our increasingly busy lives – an opportunity to lay the foundation for a fulfilling, successful life. With studying and homework on hold, campers have a chance to focus on building the facets of character that will carry them not only through the next school year but through life.

Numerous camp offerings allow families to select from a broad range of programs that appeal to each camper’s interests and needs. From traditional overnight camp, to horseback riding and farm camps, to survival and adventure programs, there’s truly something for everyone here.

All of the programs within these pages are rich with summer camp traditions and activities – such as s’mores around the campfire, hiking, archery, boating, and more – but everything we do is guided by our signature core values: caring, community, diversity, honesty, inclusiveness, respect, responsibility, and stewardship.

The most cherished aspect of Frost Valley summer camp is our commitment to ensuring that an engaging, growth-filled summer is available for all. Campers become bunkmates with new friends of varying background, abilities, and beliefs. They are guided by counselors and role models from all over the world and of all fields of expertise to help campers create a welcoming, lively community. SUMMER OVERNIGHT CAMP Imagine you’re here in the Catskills on a warm summer day. You hike up the trail toward the cool spray of High Falls. Later, you and your new friends start a game of gaga ball that you’ll be laughing about for the next week. Or maybe you, along with our experienced camp staff, choose to climb up the 40-foot Y Tower, soar down the zipline, join a choreographed dance routine or go for a horseback ride on the trails. By then you’ll want to cool off with a plunge in the refreshing waters of Lake Cole. Day turns to night and the air grows cooler but the crackling campfire keeps you and your cabin-mates warm. You’re making s’mores and telling stories beneath a blanket of stars. New friends feel as comfortable as family. Counselors lead the sing-along. The summer seems perfectly endless. The night does, too. And soon dawn breaks. There are pancakes in the dining hall, the sleepy, smiling faces of all your friends, and you get to enjoy another day in the Valley all over again!

FROST VALLEY STAFF Frost Valley YMCA is dedicated to hiring only the most qualified and experienced counselors to care for our campers. Many have been with us since they were young, journeying from camper to counselor in training (CiT) to counselor. They know our history, culture, traditions, and terrain as if they have Frost Valley running through their DNA. Others come to us from over a dozen countries around the world. Before being hired, all Frost Valley YMCA staff over 18, including our counselors, are given background and criminal history checks.

Counselors undergo extensive training in our policies and procedures, which stress health and safety.

CARING: We go beyond ourselves to do what we can for all.

S P M A C Y A W A P E E L S L A N O I TRADIT CAMP WAWAYANDA (GRADES 2-7) Camp Wawayanda is a traditional overnight camp where, during two-week sessions, children build independence while choosing from a wide range of activities based on age, interest, and ability. Campers gain confidence, new skills, and good friends as they climb the Y-tower, hike to High Falls, kayak across Lake Cole, and learn from role models from around the world.

Campers live in villages according to age and gender.

CAMP HENRY HIRD (GRADES 8-10) “The most wonderful place for a child or teenager to learn about themselves, realize what they’re capable of, and be challenged!”

At Camp Henry Hird, teens come together for two weeks at a time to enjoy a wide range of camp offerings, including extended overnight camping trips on the trail, adventure courses like the Giant’s Ladder and Leap of Faith, and big brother/big sister programs. On a daily basis, we witness the transformation from camper to young leader, as teens exceed their own expectations and become confident, socially responsible stewards of the natural world.

Campers are placed in villages according to age and gender.

SAMPLE DAILY SCHEDULE

Schedule content will vary with village. Every camper enjoys an overnight camping experience on the trail. Cabin cleanup is complete before campers begin daily activities.

Our trained aquatic staff lead this instructional and recreational program on our own Lake Cole, under supervision of certified lifeguards. Progressive swim lessons are available as well as canoeing, rowing, standup paddle boards, kayaking, and a ton of water sports!

Experienced instructors teach these popular skill building sessions. Wawayanda campers choose two 4-day long specialties. Henry Hird campers choose one 8-day specialty.

Choices vary and may include a variety of sports, theatre, music, cooking, gardening, nature, arts, high ropes and adventure courses, and hiking.

DINNER EVENING PROGRAMS

Campfires, overnights, hayrides, and dances are just a few things campers enjoy.

DEVOTION! GOODNIGHT! LIGHTS OUT! Gather together as a cabin group to debrief and get excited for the next day.

ALL-CAMP EVENTS FOURTH OF JULY (1ST SESSION) The Fourth of July begins, like all other days, with a flag raising ceremony. However, for our Independence Day celebration, the entire camp joins together around the flagpole to sing a rousing happy birthday to America. During the day, campers participate in activities to celebrate this patriotic day. Later, we invite our international summer staff to participate in a Small World Fair, where campers participate in sharing the history and traditions of a variety of cultures. The celebration culminates with an evening of fireworks over Lake Cole.

OLYMPIX (2ND SESSION) Every summer, the Olympix spirit sweeps through camp when Frost Valley hosts our annual Olympix championship. Competing countries vary from year to year and are represented by groups of campers. The opening ceremony commences the night before with dances, skits, and songs representing the cultural traditions of each country. Team unity and pride are on full display, but it’s the spirit of Frost Valley that rises strong. Let the games begin!

NEW!

CARNIVALLEY (3RD SESSION)

CarniValley is our new Session 3 all-camp activity, the greatest carnival to ever take place at Frost Valley! Frost Valley is rich with tradition and we are starting a new one. At CarniValley, records will be set that will go down in camp history. The competition is always friendly and a wide range of carnival games will be enjoyed by all.

Something for everyone! This lively day will wrap up with a lip-sync battle to remember. Each village will spend the week preparing to compete for awards such as “Best Air Guitar” or “Most Enthusiastic”.

This red carpet, Core-Values-sponsored event, will be covered by Frost Valley TV. Lights! Camera! Action!

HIRDSTOCK (4TH SESSION) Hirdstock, a camp-wide music festival inspired by the original Woodstock, takes place during the fourth session. Campers participate in arts and crafts, games, an air guitar competition, and other activities on Hirdstock Field. But the main attraction is always the music. Performances and musical acts by campers and counselors draw the positive vibes of all present.

IS FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE?

Many of our summer staff members were campers who became CiTs and then counselors, so they know Frost Valley YMCA better than most. Others joins us from around the world as international staff. Many return year after year, giving Frost Valley a family environment and a true sense of culture and tradition.

Counselors undergo extensive training on our policies and procedures which stress health and safety first. In-depth background and criminal history checks are performed on all of our employees.

We follow the American Camp Association standards with providing a 1 to 6 camper to counselor ratio. For younger campers, this ratio is often smaller. To ensure a welcoming and familiar community, roughly 70% of our staff return each summer.

Three hot, wholesome meals are served daily. Our dining hall offers a vast array of options from the typical kid fare to organic, gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan options. Care is taken to meet the dietary needs of all of our campers.

Fresh fruit is available for snacking all day long. Chartwells Educational Dining Service creates the menus, ensuring that each meal is nutritionally balanced.

Candy, juice, and soda are not served nor sold in the Camp Store.

Frost Valley YMCA’s Annual Giving Campaign, Project 332, raises money for “camperships” to provide a Frost Valley experience for nearly 600 children who would not otherwise be able to join us. WHAT IF MY CHILD GETS SICK? The Guenther Family Wellness Center, located on camp, is staffed by registered nurses and emergency responders 24 hours a day. If your child gets sick, you will be notified immediately while your child receives the care they need. To learn more, email: nurse@frostvalley.org

WHERE WILL MY CHILD SLEEP? Camp accommodations vary from single cabins, yurts, and tents to lodges that house two-to-four groups of campers.

These arrangements all promise the opportunity for friendships to flourish naturally and with ease, while under the close supervision of counselors and village chiefs. We honor one mutual bunk request per camper.

PARTICIPATION AGREEMENT & REFUND POLICY: PLEASE READ & SIGN THIS STATEMENT I hereby enroll my child in Frost Valley YMCA Summer Camp. In signing this application, I certify that he/she is healthy and free of problems that could adversely affect his/her stay or that of other campers at Frost Valley YMCA. I agree to pay the balance of camp fees on or before March 31, 2018. I understand that reserved space may not be held past March 31, 2018 without full payment. I understand that on or after September 1, 2018 any outstanding balances are subject to a 1.5% monthly finance charge. REFUND/CANCELLATION POLICY: A full refund is available if canceled by March 31, 2018. A full refund less a $250 deposit (per session, per camper) is available if canceled from April 1 - June 1, 2018. Occasionally Frost Valley YMCA transports campers out of camp to participate in activities. Camp participants may be transported over to the East Valley of Frost Valley’s property and other areas within the Catskill region to enjoy programs. If my child is enrolled for Horseback Riding Lessons or registered for any of the Equestrian Camps, I understand that as with any sport there are inherent risks that can be minimized through preparation and training. Each rider will be required to wear protective attire. This includes long pants to protect the legs, socks, hard smooth-soled shoes with heels (preferably boots), and a properly fitted and secured helmet, provided by the camp.

I understand these risks and release Frost Valley YMCA, and the directors, trustees, officers, volunteers and employees of Frost Valley YMCA, from all liability for damages or injuries resulting from equine activity, negligence or defects in the preparation, instruction, or equipment involved in horseback riding in or around Frost Valley YMCA. MAINSTREAMING AT CAMP (MAC) In partnership with the Young Adult Institute, Frost Valley YMCA welcomes children with developmental disabilities to join the wider camp community during daily activities. Imagine you’re lost in the Catskill Mountains. The days are hot and the nights are cool. There’s no cell phone service and no signs of civilization. In a wilderness survival situation, would you have what it takes to make it through the night? Through the week?

Frost Valley YMCA is now home to the world’s first Bear Grylls Survival Academy Summer Camp for teens. This six-day extreme course is led by survival professionals trained by the Bear Grylls Survival Academy. Through their guidance and supervision, campers gain dozens of skills as they’re put to the test in thrilling survival and endurance scenarios such as: • • • • •

Foraging for food & learning to set traps Building fire to cook over & stay warm Creating shelters to sleep in Crossing waterways & rough terrain Carrying out various methods of dynamic self-rescues

This is also the only Frost Valley program to repel down High Falls!

Campers are outfitted with the essential gear, so they can experience simulated, yet no less extreme, survival situations in the Catskill wilderness.

While building a strong sense of camaraderie with fellow survivalists, campers explore the natural world around them and take healthy risks that push them beyond their comfort zones. Campers choose their own challenges to ensure they strive to reach individual and cooperative goals.

ADVEN TURE C AMPS ADVENTURE VILLAGE (GRADES 5-9) AVAILABLE ALL SESSIONS

Adventure Village is organized into two minivillages, Woodwise (Grades 5-7) and Sequoia (Grades 8 & 9), both with the same mission: to help campers become lifetime lovers of the outdoors! Combining the best of Overnight Camp and Adventure Trips, campers choose their adventure from activities like climbing, day-long hikes exploring trails and creek beds, orienteering, ropes courses, and outdoor skills. Campers in the village will also experience a multi-night camping trip.

Adventure Village’s homebase is tucked in the woods between two converging mountain creeks with a communal Mongolian Yurt in the center. The Adirondack Hike and Climb trip is an introductory trip for the adventurer at heart.

Campers learn backcountry skills like orienteering, fire building and low-impact camping. Campers will also test their limits and find the value of teamwork while hiking and climbing some of the highest peaks in New York state.

(GRADE 6) AVAILABLE DATES: 7/15-20 • 8/12-17 The Rocks and Ropes trip is an introductory climbing experience for the camper looking to conquer their fears and build skills as a confident climber. Located in the Shawanagunk Mountains, campers learn climbing knots, belay techniques and more. This is a great first trip for campers looking to reach new heights.

CATSKILL BACKPACKER

(GRADE 6) AVAILABLE DATES: 7/5-13 • 8/5-10 This one-week, all-level backpacking trip in our own Catskill Mountains is a trip for the camper looking to develop both skills and themselves. As we learn map reading, fire building, low-impact camping and much more, campers will also begin to develop leadership qualities and greater self-confidence.

ADIRONDACK HIKE AND CLIMB (GRADES 7-8) AVAILABLE SESSIONS 1 & 3

MAINE COAST (GRADES 7-8) AVAILABLE SESSIONS 1, 3 & 4 This trip in Acadia National Park is for the explorer interested in the challenge of climbing, hiking, and paddling. Join us as we climb the Otter Cliffs, hike the highest peaks in Acadia, and kayak along coastal islands all with certified Maine guides.

PATHFINDER TRIPS (introductory) WEST VIRGINIA WHITEWATER

(GRADES 8-9) AVAILABLE SESSIONS 2 & 4 Spend two weeks learning the art of whitewater rafting in the world-renowned New River Gorge.

Frost Valley has over 25 years experience running this trip, and it is extremely popular – a great next step in the Adventure program.

LONG TRAIL BACKPACKER (GRADES 8-9) AVAILABLE SESSIONS 1 & 3

Join us as we hike the beginning portion of the Vermont Long Trail. The Long Trail is a 272-mile footpath that travels from the Massachusetts-Vermont border to the Canadian border. This trail climbs rugged mountains and passes pristine ponds, hardwood forests, and beautiful streams. Join us on an adventure of a lifetime as we tackle sections of Vermont’s Long Trail.

(GRADES 9-10) AVAILABLE SESSION 2 & 4 The Vermont Voyager takes place on the stunning Lake Champlain. Campers learn to work as a team and master skills as we spend days sea kayaking and sailing. (AGE 14+) AVAILABLE SESSION 3 This trip is for campers who want to make a positive impact on homelessness and make a difference helping Habitat for Humanity with everyday tasks that raise money to rebuild the local community here in the Catskills. Campers work with Habitat for Humanity to gain experience, make new friends, acquire new skills, and give back while earning 35 hours of community service. This trip isn’t all work though! Campers will also enjoy the beauty of the Catskill Mountains by climbing in the nearby Mohonk Preserve.

The most advanced wilderness trip, Adirondack Mountain Summit Multi-pitch is nothing short of amazing. Campers summit the most beautiful and highest peaks in the Adirondacks and climb the highest cliff face on the East Coast. They spend thirteen days backpacking before spending five days climbing. The climbing section provides hands-on learning in setting up gear, scouting climbs, and climbing safety. This trip emphasizes becoming responsible outdoor enthusiasts for life.

MAINE TRAIL BUILDERS

(GRADES 9-12) AVAILABLE SESSION 2 Maine Trail Builders is for the adventurous camper who also wants to make a difference. On this trip campers explore the beautiful area of Acadia, Maine as they help maintain trails and complete service work with the National Park Service. Digging in the dirt, trimming trees and completing various projects around the park, they earn up to 35 hours of community service. On days off, campers climb cliffs above the ocean and hike the highest peaks with the best vistas in the National Park.

CATSKILL TRAIL BUILDERS

(GRADES 9-12) AVAILABLE SESSIONS 1 & 4 Join us in the “forever wild” Catskill Mountains as we help maintain our trails and complete service work for our local community. Campers will learn about trail building and gain knowledge and skills digging water trenches, clearing overgrown brush, creating vista points, and completing other projects on the nearby trails. Campers will earn up to 35 hours of community service. On days off, we explore the best vistas in the area and visit local fire towers.

HORSE PROGRAMS ON MAIN CAMP Frost Valley YMCA is home to two different horse camps on main camp: Mustang and Durango Village. These programs are ideal for campers who want to live the life of an equestrian, but also participate in traditional camp activities. Campers spend half of each day learning the basics of horsemanship and developing riding skills, while the remainder of the day is devoted to a wide range of other camp activities, including swimming in the lake, hiking, arts and crafts, climbing, overnight camping trips, and more.

Campers live in a lodge or cabin with counselors who have exceptional skills with horses and childcare. No previous riding experience is required.

HORSE PROGRAMS AT EAST VALLEY RANCH Located just one mile from Farm Camp, East Valley Ranch is set in a picturesque location dedicated to providing girls with an exceptional experience working with horses and enjoying summer camp. This program is designed for girls with all levels of horse experience from all disciplines and our highly knowledgeable and passionate staff are eager to help them develop confidence in their abilities both in the saddle and in life. The East Valley Ranch programs teach primarily Western style horseback riding techniques, but experience from all backgrounds and disciplines are welcome. Campers sleep in yurts arranged by age and enjoy their own private dining hall and a variety of program areas.

GIRLS ONLY, GRADES 5 AND UP, MINIMUM AGE 10 AVAILABLE ALL SESSIONS For your girls interested in not only learning to ride but also gaining the responsibility that comes with horses, this program fosters confidence, responsibility, and close friendships. Each girl is assigned a horse for the whole session and spends half of her day at the barn, focusing on riding technique and learning about grooming, tacking, veterinary care, and training techniques. Campers have the opportunity during their second week to choose a specialty program, either in trail riding where they spend the week exploring our 14-mile network of trails, or they can choose to spend time in the arena focusing on progressing through the fundamentals of riding and good horsemanship.

All of our campers experience the traditions and activities that are fundamental to summer camp.

Girls also spend another portion of each day hiking, completing high and low ropes courses, boating, making arts and crafts, and more. Campers will enjoy swimming several times each week, an overnight camping experience, and an all-camp theme day with campers in other programs. Girls grow leaps and bounds during this program, gaining confidence, a sense of responsibility, as well as respect and compassion for all beings.

4-WEEK EAST VALLEY RANCH PROGRAM Program FULL! A waiting list is available for summer 2018.

GIRLS ONLY, GRADES 8-11, AGE 13-16 DATES: JULY 2-28 & JULY 30-AUG 25 For older girls, this month-long adventure provides new challenges and opportunities to further advance their riding technique and gain a deeper knowledge of horses.

Girls spend half of their day with the horses, working on horse training techniques and learning what it takes to own and properly care for a horse. Throughout the month, campers will design and practice their own drill team, which is performed for the two-week campers, Farm Camp, and Mustang Village. In addition to the drill team, campers will prepare for and experience an overnight camping trip under the stars with their horses.

Four-week campers also enjoy traditional camp activities such as swimming, high and low ropes courses, archery, and more. This program helps build strong, independent and experienced equestrians who will go home to be mindful leaders within their communities.

Farm Camp is a working farm set on 515 acres, with a barn full of animals and a colorful garden, both of which are tended to daily by our campers. Here, children learn to care for all kinds of animals and cultivate and harvest the garden. At farm camp, children learn on a deep level what it means to live a healthy life, by eating the very foods they’ve grown and how important it is to be stewards of the earth.

Frost Valley Farm Camp’s Mongolian yurts are arranged by age and gender, and campers spend their days integrated as a united community. This gives campers of all ages the chance to learn from one another, mentor others, and develop skills at their own pace.

Campers also enjoy the simple pleasures of summer camp: swimming, boating, playing games and sports, making arts and crafts, and bonding with friends over the campfire.
