FIELD GUIDE VOL V

MITTEN SEASON

ALL ABOARD FOR MITTEN SEASON When warmth counts, reach for a pair of Frost River mittens. They’re handmade from premium raw materials and field tested in some of the harshest winters around in the northern wilds of Minnesota and beyond. Supple and durable deerhide buckskin, heavyduty weather-shedding waxed canvas and lining combine with old-world craftsmanship to make mitts that are up to the task, no matter where you are. This volume of the Frost River Field Guide is devoted to our tried and true, traditional Mittens & Choppers.

Each of our mitten collections are named after a historic North American Railway. Not only will you find a new pair of mitts that are up to any task, but you might also learn some interesting history on trains along the way. A special thanks to the Lake Superior Railroad Museum in Duluth, Minnesota; they were kind enough to let us take some photos of our goods on the historic trains and provide us with some great stories along the way.

NORTHERN PACIFIC MITTENS H

eadquartered in Minnesota and connecting the Great Lakes to the Pacific Ocean, the Northern Pacific Railway was a transcontinental gateway. Northern Pacific offered a premier passenger train service that at the time was the safest and most superior way to travel in the nation.

Much like Northern Pacific, Frost River makes no compromises on the premium materials that go into our Northern Pacific Mittens. These handcrafted mitts offer an arctic fleece lining to keep your hands happy. For the outer shell choose either durable waxed canvas or supple buckskin. Each offering a safe shelter no matter the weather.

THE ROUTE OF THE GREAT BIG BAKED POTATO The NP railway came across farmers of the Yakima Valley that were unable to sell their potatoes because of their abnormally large size, weighing in at two to five pounds each. Chefs of the Northern Pacific found that when these potatoes were slow-baked in the oven, they were delicious. Word of the railway’s specialty offering spread and ended up becoming a slogan for the line’s passenger service.

GREAT NORTHERN MITTENS T

he Great Northern Railway was the northernmost transcontinental railroad route in the United States. Running from St.Paul, Minnesota to Seattle, Washington the Great Northern was the only successfully built and privately funded transcontinental railroad in the history of the U.S.

Our Great Northern Mittens are built for the people of North enduring extremely cold temperatures. Waxed canvas works to shed slush and arctic polar fleece lining keeps you warm. The gauntlet length protects wrists while sealing your sleeves. These are some serious mitts for serious weather.

“YOU GO GREAT, WHEN YOU GO GREAT NORTHERN.” Many of the western railroads, including the Great Northern Railway were instrumental in creating several of the Unites States’ National Parks. The President of the Great Northern line relentlessly pressed the federal government for the establishment of a park, preserving the beauty of western Montana. The hard work all paid off when Glacier National Park was signed into law. Afterwards, hotels were constructed to attract tourists and simultaneously, ridership of the Great Northern Railway increased as more people came to see the natural wonders.

MEET THE

ROTARY SNOWPLOW W

edge snowplows are traditionally used to clear snow from train tracks, but are ineffective when the snowdrifts are too deep- that’s when the rotary snowplow comes in. While the rotary wheel is turning, the blades work to cut through the snow and ice. In extreme conditions, rotary snowplows would be placed at each end of the train, with a few locomotives in between. This would allow the train to return to its starting location if the tracks it just cleared where again snow covered. You don’t see many rotary plows in use today due to the high maintenance costs they incur, most railways prefer the fixed-blade plows. But, they sure are a sight to see!

PENNSYLVANIA CHOPPERS S

ervicing the East Coast, up to the Southeastern Great Lakes Region, the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, also known as ‘Pennsy’ was the largest of its time, carrying nearly three times the passengers as other comparable railways. It became the largest corporation in the world during the early 1900s and its budget was only second to that of the U.S. Government.

Named after one of the most successful railways of its time, our Pennsylvania Choppers succeed in their versatility. You get your choice of not only a waxed canvas or buckskin shell, but also the type of liner that you use with them. Use different liners based on the temperature or activity, and have the ability to easily keep the insides of your mitts clean.

THE ICONIC ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE

K

nown as Pennsylvania’s ‘GG-1’ locomotive, this streamlined design and electric technology helped passenger trains reach speeds of over 100mph. Electric locomotives are extremely efficient-- they have low operating costs and the ability to quickly accelerate. The downside is, the extreme capital needed to implement them. These locomotives were built to last, some of them seeing over 50 years of service. The last GG-1 was retired from service in 1983. The G’s speed and reliability made train crews come to love them, as well as passengers who rode behind and witnessed their enormous strength.

FROST RIVER FIELD GUIDE VOL V - MITTEN SEASON

So I purchased these two summers ago and use them outdoors in the winter all winter long. I work in the trucking industry and open and close trailers up to 60 hours a week wearing these. The amount of Road grime and wetness and salt that gets on these would ruin other pairs of gloves and mittens.....I highly recommend these. -Mercury B. FROSTRIVER.COM
