Togiak RIver Lodge, ALaska

June 25 - July 1, 2026

HOSTED BY: RODDY HALL

What to expect

Experience outstanding spey casting for dime-bright King salmon fresh from Goodnews Bay. Located just six miles from tidewater, the lodge offers access to fish that arrive hot, aggressive, and often still carrying sea lice—a true testament to their proximity to the ocean. From the river’s mouth to the boundary of the Togiak National Wildlife Refuge, 18 miles upriver, anglers will cover dynamic stretches of water including tidewaters, braided channels, and tributaries. This diverse river system provides access to some of the finest King salmon holding water on the river.

In addition to targeting King salmon, your week on the Togiak River offers opportunities to pursue Chum salmon, Sockeye salmon, Leopard rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, and Arctic grayling—an incredible variety all within the same pristine watershed. Your adventure includes five full days of guided fly fishing, primarily swinging flies to fresh waves of King salmon as they push upriver to spawn. New fish arrive daily, joining the native species that thrive in the Togiak system, ensuring consistent action throughout your stay.

ABOUT Your Host

Roddy Hall started his career in the outdoor world in the mid 1990s, as a fishing guide in the UK and Ireland and running a small pheasant shoot. Roddy then joined Frontiers and between 2000 and 2005 was the manager of Ryabaga Camp on the Ponoi River in Russia.

He then went on to be involved with several different rivers in Russia and spent every season from 1999 to 2015 managing fishing lodges in the Kola Peninsula.

Roddy has also spent many seasons exploring the fishing in Southern Africa, where he lived for many years, and also regularly takes groups to destinations as geographically diverse as Argentina, the Caribbean, Iceland, and the Seychelles. Roddy now lives in Northern Ireland with his wife, two children, and numerous animals.

The Togiak River's gentle gradient and abundance of gravel bars make it ideal for spey casting, offering anglers the perfect environment to swing flies through prime holding water. We believe the Togiak remains one of the last great King salmon rivers—known for its consistent returns and unforgettable fishing experiences. It's a hidden gem, tucked away in a remote and rarely-pressured corner of Alaska.

The Togiak River Lodge is the only permanent wooden lodge on the river. Each guide works with 2 anglers per boat (up to 4 if requested) in large aluminum fishing boats. Lodging is typically double occupancy, with cabins for up to 4 guests upon request. Guests may upgrade to single occupancy, subject to availability. All fishing gear can be provided by the lodge if necessary. The Main Lodge features a dining hall and commercial kitchen, TV lounge for relaxing after dinner, apparel shop and gear drying room, and a full laundry facility.

Cabins features:

• 24-hour water, power, and heat

• Full bathroom with walk-in shower, sink, and flush toilet

• Twin XL or King beds with 100% cotton sheets and comforters

• Front locking door with windows on both sides

• Carpeted floors

• Thermostat-controlled heater or pellet stove/oil heaters in each cabin

Exceptional Wilderness Dining:

At Togiak River Lodge, you'll enjoy hearty, satisfying meals throughout your stay. Freshly brewed coffee and tea are available beginning at 6:00 AM for early risers, followed by a made-to-order breakfast served promptly at 7:00 AM.

We understand that many guests prefer to spend as much time as possible on the water. To accommodate this, they offer a convenient sandwich and snack bar immediately after breakfast. You can prepare a custom wrap or sandwich and select from a variety of snacks, including granola bars, cookies, and other treats. A mini fridge stocked with bottled water and a variety of sodas is also available. Additionally, your guide will carry a Thermos filled with coffee or hot water for tea, and you’re welcome to take a Thermos of hot soup along for your day.

For those who prefer to take a midday break, the sandwich and soup bar is open from 11:30 AM to 12:45 PM. Stop in to warm up with a hot bowl of soup or a fresh sandwich, relax with a cup of coffee or tea, and then head back out to enjoy more afternoon fishing.

SPEY FISHING TIPS:

King Salmon (Chinook), are the first to make their way into the river, typically arriving by mid-June. You’ll target these powerful, chrome-bright fish using swung flies, with two-handed rods (not mandatory). Their aggressive takes on swung flies make for an exhilarating experience. The lower Togiak is an advanced spey anglers dream and our guests prefer two-handed rods during late June and early July. The Togiak is known for big deep runs with great holding waters for big Chinook. To maximize your chances of landing these mighty Kings, having the right gear is essential.

Here's what they recommend:

Rods: A two-handed rod in the 14-15 foot range is ideal for covering water and handling the strength of these fish.

Lines: Skagit heads are a must, with multi-density lines being particularly useful in varied water conditions.

Sink Tips: Bring a selection, including 10’ T11, 10’ T14, and 10’ T17 tips. MOW tips are also excellent choices for fine-tuning your presentation.

Leader Material: Maxima 20 lb. is our go-to, with 3-4 feet being the perfect length for a strong, effective setup.

Flies: Effective patterns include Prom Dress, Reverse Marabous, and Intruders. Stick to colors like black, pink, blue, and green to entice these aggressive fish.

Hooks: Use high quality, strong-wire octopus hooks in sizes 1 to 1/0 to handle the power of these incredible salmon.

With this setup, you'll be ready to take on the challenge of targeting King Salmon with confidence.
