A monster golden dorado

Our fresh water fishing opportunities south of the Equator encompass sightcasting to trophy browns and rainbows in New Zealand, chasing golden dorado and peacock bass in the Amazon reaches, floating or wading remote and unpressured Patagonian rivers, or challenging the giant sea-run trout of Tierra del Fuego. Based on their vast in-field travels, Frontiers professionals can add many other wonderful experiences for the non-angling companion; consider wine regions from Mendoza and Chile’s Colchagua Valley across the Pacific to Hawke’s Bay, Marlborough, and from the Central Otago regions of New Zealand through Australia to the Western Cape of Africa. Argentina WHEN TROUT WERE FIRST BROUGHT TO ARGENTINA AND STOCKED IN THE RIVERS AROUND SAN MARTIN DE LOS ANDES AND BARILOCHE MORE THAN 100 YEARS AGO, no one could

foresee what a boon this would be to fly fishermen. Trout flourished in the nutrient-rich waters and spread to other rivers and lakes. Over time, local attitudes changed from subsistence fishing to recreational sport fishing, and eventually this led to actions meant to protect rivers, including the practice of catch-andrelease. Now fly fishermen from all over the world come to catch trout in Argentina’s pristine waters.

The usual suspects ready and waiting to wet a line

Amazing rivers like the Malleo, Collon Cura, Chimehuin and the Traful, as well as the welcoming lodges and delicious Argentine cuisine ensure the country’s growing popularity among fly fishermen. n

Jorge Trucco with a fine Frontiers teamed up with Jorge and Limay Brown his PATAGONIA OUTFITTERS more than 30 years ago to provide the traveling angler access to the best lodges on the best rivers, using the best local guides. The estancia comfortably accommodates eight guests and has a separate suite that makes a group of 10 a possibility. Estancia Tipiliuke Tres Lagos Lodge The Rio Chimehuin is considered the epicenter of fly fishing in Argentina. Below the “boca,” or mouth, of the river, lies ESTANCIA TIPILIUKE. Tipiliuke attracts those who want to fish this famous river while staying at a five-star lodge. Nestled inside a grove of large pines, the lodge has six double rooms and four single rooms that accommodate up to 16 guests or 12 fishermen. The town of San Martin de los Andes is nearby, so nonfishers will find plenty to do while the fishermen work the river and its side channels for brown and rainbow trout.

If you prefer a home-style feel to your fishing lodge experience, then TRES LAGOS LODGE is a perfect fit. This lodge has three double-room cabins located a short walk from the main house, making it ideal for a group of six. Family-style cooking with dishes created from the lodge’s garden and other local ingredients add to the charm. Set in a valley surrounded by thick forests, Tres Lagos not only offers exceptional fly fishing, but outstanding horseback riding as well. The Rio Filo Hua Hum flows between two lakes and is home to both brown and rainbow trout until late January, when they move back to the depths of the coldwater lakes. Shoulder seasons are when this area fishes best.

This amazing ranch has miles to explore on the Rio Corcovado and the smaller Tecka. The clear water Corcovado is large enough to fish for feeding brown and rainbow trout from drift boats. In Memoriam: Susan Burt Fitzgerald 1939-2015 On August 20, 2015, we lost a great lady. Susie Fitzgerald was the other half of the famous ‘Mike and Susie Fitzgerald’ team that founded Frontiers in 1969 and not only created the sporting travel trend which is the norm today but set the standards for how patrons of the sporting industry should be looked after. As she always used to say “Michael handles the forest, and I handle the trees” and that is exactly how it was. The standards she set have not changed, indeed we still all strive to keep to her standards today. She almost single-handedly introduced the world to the Rio Grande, and to Christmas and Alphonse Islands among others. As a supplier, if Susie Fitzgerald believed in you, you were on your way. There was no greater enthusiast or optimist. She will be greatly missed by us all.

La Zona — The Lair of Giants Argentina

Entre Rios Province The golden dorado, which calls the Uruguay River home, can rip a fishing rod right out of an angler’s hands. A ferocious, high-flying fight follows any take. Dorado in the Uruguay grow to enormous size, with 50-pounders ready to slash at flies and lures. Twenty-pounders are only the middle of the food chain. These voracious hunters will destroy anything that they can catch and swallow. Conventional tackle and fly anglers come to LA ZONA to realize their fishing dreams. Top water action is prevalent; watching a huge fish engulf an offering is a thrill few will ever experience. All the action takes place in the tailwater discharge of the Grande Salto Dam on the Uruguay River, the border between Argentina and Uruguay. Only two outfitters have rights to fish this 1-1/2-mile fishery. The lodge’s custom skiffs are appropriate for both fly and spin fishing and have casting platforms in the bow and stern.

La Zona, breaking dorado world records annually

Fishing is limited to Friday through Monday, and the outfitter works hand-in-hand with fishery biologists to stay in compliance with strict regulations imposed by the governments to protect this unique sport fishing treasure. A five-night fishing package ranges from $2,850 to $6,450 per person based on double occupancy and shared guide. Rates vary according to the time of the year. n

Endless marsh, countless dorado await at Pira Lodge

Pira Lodge Corrientes Province

A Nervous Waters Property The Ibera Marsh is a three-million acre subtropical wetland bested in size only by the Florida Everglades. In the heart of this marsh is Nervous Waters’ PIRA LODGE and prime habitat for the brutish yet acrobatic golden dorado. Perched on the bow of one of the lodge’s Hell’s Bay flats skiffs, anglers enjoy the dramatic sights and rhythmic sounds of this eco-rich environment. The calm is short lived, however, as dorado strike with a ferocity normally found only in saltwater species. Following a dorado’s aerial display comes a quick photo of the catch and then its release back to the marsh. The peaceful surroundings will pull the mind back into cool contemplation—at least until the next dorado comes along. Globetrotting anglers say that Pira is one of the most tranquil and picturesque lodges anywhere. Positioned on the grass-lined banks a few yards from the marsh, Pira blends in, yet still has all the creature comforts. There is a swimming pool, five spacious bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and sprawling common areas for relaxation. Prices quoted upon request. n Insider Tip: A trip to Pira Lodge can now be combined with Nervous Waters’ sister dorado destination, Alto Parana Lodge. Enjoy two dorado fishing adventures wrapped in one wellorchestrated departure. Contact Frontiers for full details, special rates and itinerary proposals.

Alto Parana Lodge Argentina

Corrientes Province

A Nervous Waters Property The golden dorado continues to take the fly fishing world by storm, and no one in Argentina stays on the cutting edge quite like Nervous Waters. The ALTO PARANA LODGE offers an extraordinary adventure on the shores of the Parana River at the point where it forms the border between Argentina and Paraguay. Here, the river is a broad tailwater that fans out into a series of braids, channels and big water. This formation creates an ideal habitat for three target species: aggressive and acrobatic golden dorado, oversized knuckle-busting pacú, and the dry fly-sipping, hard-charging pira pita. The lodge caters to four anglers in plush single accommodations and is fished from custom-built river skiffs with dual casting platforms and 115-horsepower Yamaha four-stroke engines. There are daily commercial flights into the regional airport. Pira Lodge in the Ibera Marsh is nearby and can be included for the ultimate dorado fishing experience. Prices quoted upon request. n

Chile A DEEP, CRYSTAL CLEAR LAKE QUIETLY HOLDS THE REFLECTION OF ANCIENT GLACIERS. Suddenly,

a five-pound rainbow trout leaps out of the water to catch a passing dragonfly. Not far away, the lake becomes a river, and in one of its many eddies dozens of trout feed on emerging caddis flies. Stands of bamboo and fuchsia flowers blow in the gentle breeze of this temperate rainforest climate. High on a mountain ridge, a gaucho on horseback tends his sheep and shifts in his saddle to look east over the wide valley and the winding river below where an angler casts his line. Chile is a land of breathtaking beauty punctuated by the impressive Andes mountain range. To the east, its rivers flow through semi-arid land used to graze cattle and sheep, while the waters in the west make their way to the Pacific Ocean through the thick foliage of temperate rainforests. Yet in this land of extremes, there is one constant: excellent fly fishing. Frontiers clients returning from Chile rave about fishing on water nearly devoid of other anglers. Their stories of catching large trout from lakes and stalking cruising fish in small spring creeks are what fly fishermen dream about. The lodges we represent in Chile offer the best in service, accommodations and cuisine, perfectly complementing a productive day on the water. Let us help plan your own Chilean fishing experience. n

Satisfied clients come home and immediately talk of a return visit for the following season. The Saturday-Saturday program features fishing from two different lodges in two different watersheds. Head guide and coowner Frans Jansen has added a coastal property and fishing on Lago Verde for those who want more. The lodge accommodates up to ten anglers. Futa Lodge A Nervous Waters Property FUTA LODGE is located in the Valle de las Escalas, just over the border from Argentina. This mountainous and thickly forested region is in a transitional “microclimate where the semi-arid climate of Argentina to the east changes to the temperate rainforest of the coastal west. Futa Lodge is perfect for a small party of friends or family and can take four guests in the lodge and two in a freestanding cabin nearby. The service and cuisine at the lodge are fantastic and earn great reviews. The Rio Futaleufu cuts through the valley and bursts with brown and rainbow trout. Coyhaique River Lodge The Coyhaique region of southern Chile is stunning with big mountains, thick forests and rolling farmland. To the east is a semiarid steppe and to the west is a temperate rainforest that lies along the coastline. But in between is a paradise of lakes, rivers and streams that teem with trout. COYHAIQUE RIVER LODGE was established to provide what many feel is the best fishing in all of Chile. The lodge takes anglers to the Simpson, Nirehuao, Paloma and Emperador Guillermo Rivers, as well as many smaller streams on private land. The attractive lodge facility is a short walk from the banks of the Coyhaique River. Eight anglers can spend a week here and not fish all of the water offered in the program. Brothers and longtime Frontiers friends –Cristian and Marcelo Dufflocq

Cristian and Marcelo Dufflocq As sons of a pioneering Chilean fly fishing outfitter, CRISTIAN AND MARCELO DUFFLOCQ were raised around the business of guiding and running a fishing lodge, so they were well-equipped to make a career out of it. Not only are the brothers skilled fly fishing guides, but accomplished naturalists. Their three lodges in Chile have become synonymous with quality accommodations, top-shelf cuisine and excellent fishing. At the Fundo el Salto, constructed from a renovated farmhouse near Puerto Montt, guests will fish the beautiful Rio Petrohue for brown and rainbow trout. Further south sits the Estancia de los Rios. This massive 360,000-acre, privatelyowned ranch features miles of unpressured fishing on the Upper Rio Cisnes. Finally, the Chilean Fjords trip allows four fly fishers to target large trout in one of the most remote and undisturbed areas of Chile. Cristian, Marcelo and their professional guides and staff work hard to ensure all four of their distinct lodges offer something new and bold for every fly fisherman. Settling in for a fine dinner at Estancia de los Rios, Chile

A Fly Fishing Family Heritage

Estancia de los Rios

Chilean Fjords

Fly fishermen dream about having their own private river full of trout. The ESTANCIA DE LOS RIOS is the realization of that dream. This 360,000-acre ranch has nearly 60 miles of private water for guests to fish during a week’s stay. The upper Rio Cisnes, the program’s focal point, is filled with brown trout that often take dry flies. This river is wadable, as are several spring creeks on the ranch. The lower stretches of the river are accessed by drift boat. Guests can also fish for cruising brown trout on several private lakes. The lodge accommodates 12 guests in six rooms with en-suite bathrooms.

The CHILEAN FJORDS program treats fly fishermen to a week-long adventure aboard a 53-foot cabin cruiser. They will explore the fjords and fish different rivers for large brown and rainbow trout that have rarely seen a fly. Zodiac-type inflatable boats run anglers up rivers, allowing them to wade down while working the prime holding spots for fish. Two double staterooms, private bathrooms and showers, modern electronics and a well-seasoned crew and guides make this adventure one that any angler will be eager to brag about. The fishing program runs Sunday through Saturday, and an overnight stay in Puerto Chacabuco is necessary prior to embarkation.

Brazil THE BRAZILIAN AMAZON RIVER BASIN IS A MOSAIC OF FERTILE ECOSYSTEMS. The river, the world’s largest in terms of volume and second longest after the Nile, bursts with peacock bass and many other exotic species such as arapaima and payara. More than 1,100 tributaries flow through the rainforest to the Amazon, providing life for diverse flora and fauna. White sand beaches afford a magnificent living room and dining room in the Amazon

A fascinating culture combines with the rich ecosystem to make a trip to the Amazon Basin an unparalleled experience. The bustling port of MANAUS provides an introduction to the waterways that crisscross Brazil and is the starting point for adventurers who have come to discover fishing at its finest. Nowhere else will anglers find a more productive fishery or a more voracious and animated aquatic predator than the Amazon’s peacock bass. Of all the incredible game fish, including arowana and payara, the peacock bass’s violent strike, brute strength and astonishing ability to break heavy lines and straighten hooks makes it one of the most sought after species. Exploring the home of thousands of exotic animals and bird species, experiencing the seclusion of the rainforest, trekking into the dense jungle and feeling the adrenaline rush when a trophy peacock goes airborne— whatever the dream, the Amazon can make it real.

River Plate Anglers Remote Waters for Small Groups in the Amazon Frontiers has hand-picked this operation due to its quality private waters in Brazil’s Amazon River basin. RIVER PLATE ANGLERS takes fishermen into remote, shallow rivers where they will be the sole inhabitants. River Plate’s floating barge armada delivers its guests into the depths of the Amazon jungle so they can prowl for trophy peacock bass and countless other exotic species eager to take lures and flies. Guests depart each morning in a 21-foot shallow-draft boat with a jetted motor in pursuit of these aggressive hunters. The barge generally relocates while guests spend the day fishing. The season begins in July and ends in March. River Plate has a maximum capacity of eight anglers per barge, and requires a minimum of four to book. Bookings must be made in pairs due to logistic requirements. This is a great way to experience Brazil in a distinctive and exciting way. Seven-night / six-day fishing packages range from $4,990 to $5,950 per person based on double occupancy and shared guide. n

Agua Boa Amazon Lodge

Monster peacocks, clear water, spacious bungalows and a river front pool make Agua Boa a favorite in Brazil

A Fly Fishing Nirvana

Brazil

The clear water Agua Boa River provides a pristine setting for the wild Amazon fly fishing program at AGUA BOA AMAZON LODGE. This benchmark destination is an angler’s dream. Of all of the types of fish that swim these waters, not a single one will just nibble a little-they all hit hard. Peacock bass, arowana, bicuda, payara, arapaima and traira are just a few of the tough characters that swim here. Some stretches of the Agua Boa are large, but most often it splits into small branches that weave through the dense jungle. If not for the thick green canopy overhead, the white sand river bottom and sandbars might make travelers believe they are in the Caribbean. In addition to the main river, off-channel oxbow lagoons are abundant and can be fished to add a different dimension to the trip. Thankfully, the river’s tannic water keeps most insects away. Each week the lodge accommodates 12 guests in six air-conditioned bungalows that overlook the river. Each bungalow has two queen beds, a large bathroom with solar-heated hot water showers, a dressing room and a separate lavatory. Furnished porches in the front and back provide ample space to prepare gear. The refreshing 50-meter swimming pool feels great after a long day on the river. Agua Boa Amazon Lodge provides the perfect venue to fish and experience the Amazon in total comfort. A seven-night / six-day fishing package is $4,950 to $5,950 per person based on double occupancy and shared guide. The season runs from October to April. n

Elegant Journeys in South America

Horseback riding through the vineyards at Casa de Uco

The Four Seasons Hotel Buenos Aires

Extend Your Sporting Holiday From investigating fabulous new properties to visiting established favorites, we’re always exploring the best places in South America to keep you up to date. Here’s a bucket list of fresh ideas for ways to extend and enhance your next trip to South America:

Chile A few hours south of Santiago lies a secluded paradise. VIÑA VIK, the latest addition to Vik’s portfolio, is a contemporary castle on a hill with stunning views of its private wine valley in every direction. Frontiers’ Sarah Guest said of her recent visit, “You feel like a movie star. It’s the best sort of fantasy.” • Drama and comfort; each unique suite designed by a contemporary artist • Surprisingly family-friendly and laid back; the art could be in a museum • An unforgettable wine-tasting experience Feel the spirit of the wild coast and maritime culture of Chiloe Island at Tierra’s newest resort, TIERRA CHILOE, just a few hours’ drive from Puerto Montt. Like a sculpture of a ship, this sleek wooden building perches on a peninsula overlooking rugged shores and blue water. • Enchanting local culture and cuisine • Explore the channels in the hotel’s ship, made by local shipwrights using ancient techniques • Horseback riding on the beach Reconnect with nature and revitalize body and spirt at the new HACIENDA HOTEL VIRA VIRA in Pucón. Whether you are here for relaxation or adventure, there is something to please everyone. • Fresh, organic food from the onsite farm and dairy • Stunning views of snow-capped Villarica • Every outdoor sport imaginable from kayaking to skiing

36

The Atacama Desert is so otherworldly, it is hard to believe that getting there requires only an easy flight from Santiago north to Calama followed by a short drive. REMOTA is a stunning luxury hotel in Puerto Natales, the gateway to Torres del Paine National Park. We’ve recently discovered their fly fishing program, and we’re excited. If you want a luxury family vacation in Chilean Patagonia with some fishing on the side, Remota is the best of both worlds. • No minimum stay requirement • Variety of excursions for anglers and non-anglers alike • Combine with a Skorpios cruise of the Chilean fjords for discounted rates

Brazil Whether you’re planning to attend the 2016 Olympics, or you’re fishing for peacock bass at Agua Boa lodge, don’t leave Brazil without seeing its most spectacular natural wonder, Iguassu Falls. BELMOND HOTEL DAS CATARATAS is the closest hotel to the falls, located within the national park. When Eleanor Roosevelt first saw Iguassu Falls, she exclaimed, “Poor Niagara!” • Belmond-style luxury in the heart of the jungle • Sites of interest are just steps away • Helicopter pad on site for flying over the falls

It blends the modern and traditional, from the cheeky polothemed Ponyline Bar to the beautifully preserved historic rooms of the mansion. • Connecting rooms ideal for families • Espresso maker in every room • Flawless service • Frontiers Preferred Partner Amenities HUB PORTEÑO is a hidden gem in the Recoleta neighborhood of Buenos Aires. Come for dinner, but stay for the experience. • Small boutique hotel with personalized service • Rooms so spacious, it’s like having your own flat in the city • Argentina’s famous steak and wine like you’ve never tasted them CAVAS WINE LODGE in the Lujan de Cuyo wine valley of Mendoza just celebrated their 10th anniversary. Belmond Hotel Das Cataratas, the closest hotel to Iguassu Falls

The Uco Valley, two hours south of Mendoza, is the up-and-coming name in Argentine viticulture and wine travel. Shore excursion aboard a Zodiac in Antarctica with Lindblad Expeditions

Extend Your Stay on the Water Antarctica

Patagonia

The last frontier–who hasn’t dreamed of visiting Antarctica? The name is a spell that conjures images of adventure and surreal beauty. An Antarctic cruise is an investment; most are costly in both time and fares, but the experience is a rare treasure. Like all investments, this one is worth planning ahead and obtaining the proper advice. • We suggest ABERCROMBIE & KENT’S journey aboard Le’Boreal for a sophisticated traveler in search of luxury and adventure • If you don’t have the several weeks necessary to make the crossing, we suggest QUARK EXPEDITIONS’ 8-10 day express journeys. Charter flights cut travel time across the Drake Passage, so travelers spend their time cruising the Antarctic Peninsula.

Tierra del Fuego and Cape Horn are so remote that the only way to properly explore their rugged landscape of fjords, glaciers, and wild islands is by sea. AUSTRALIS CRUISES are not only the best way to see the southern tip of Patagonia, they also provide the most convenient route between Punta Arenas, Chile and Ushuaia, Argentina. • Cruises ranging from three to seven nights will fit into any itinerary • See chinstrap penguins, elephant seals, leopard seals, and condors • Hike the untamed wilderness of sub-polar forests

New Zealand Trophy Trout Fishing Down Under

SINCE THE INTRODUCTION OF TROUT INTO NEW ZEALAND IN THE LATE 1800S, THE COUNTRY HAS EMERGED AS A FAVORITE ANGLING DESTINATION. Fishermen from all over recognize New Zealand as the world’s best wild

trophy trout fishery. The majority of the rivers on both the North and South islands are known for their clarity, and their reputation draws travelers from far and wide in search of giant trout. A trout fishery that requires more technical skills than most, New Zealand is not known for the quantity, diversity or ease of catching found in other trout waters. But to the fly fishing purist, it is heaven on earth. A good day on a New Zealand stream may yield only six trout, but they will be gorgeous, healthy, averaging from 3 to 8 pounds and caught under the most spectacular conditions. Stalking trophy wild browns and rainbows while casting dry flies and nymphs in water as clear as the air is challenging, absorbing and addictive—it’s a style unique to New Zealand. Fly fishing in New Zealand is all about making the most of opportunities for trophy trout; seeing them before they see you, positioning to make that one perfect cast and presenting the perfect fly. Frontiers works with the finest lodges, outfitters and guides in New Zealand, and we have a passion for this unique and extremely rewarding angling experience. We look forward to sharing it with you. n

Rates: We work with a number of properties, outfitters and guides in New Zealand and all of our itineraries are customized, often combining a number of different locations. Based on the current rate of exchange, a 4-night / 3-day fishing package at the lodges vary from approximately $2,580 per person to $3,950 per person based on double occupancy / shared guide.

Poronui Lodge One of our favorite lodges in the Taupo region is PORONUI LODGE, a vast 16,000-acre ranch with more than 25 miles of fishing waters right on the property. The lodge has evolved from a rustic fishing camp to one of the world’s finest fishing and outdoor recreation facilities. An outstanding wine cellar accompanies the fine menus, and a wide range of outdoor activities are available for those who may not want to fish every day.

The lodge boasts a great fly-out program

In the later months of the summer season (March to May), Poronui also offers hunting for red stag and numerous species of deer and sheep. With this range of sporting and recreational activities provided onsite, no outfitter can provide more of what New Zealand’s North Island has to offer than Poronui. n

Ron and Robynne Peacock have been fishing and guiding people for more than three decades and have an intimate knowledge of the area’s rivers, mountains and forests. The guides at Fiordland specialize in upstream sight fishing for rainbows and browns. In addition to the fantastic fishing, Fiordland is also the jumping-off point to explore Fiordland National Park. We highly recommend hiking the Milford Track and cruising Milford and Doubtful Sounds. More than just an outstanding fishing lodge, Fiordland offers outstanding accommodations and gourmet meals in the heart of the New Zealand wilderness.

Elegant Journeys in New Zealand Its Land and People When the Maori people sailed their canoes across the Pacific to New Zealand, they saw the geysers and volcanic activity of the North Island and the expansive, snow-covered Southern Alps that form the spine of the South Island. They named this land “Aotearoa” (Land of the Long White Cloud) and made it their home. Centuries later, the Europeans arrived. Homesick for the Crown, they bestowed familiar names on the areas in which they settled: Christchurch, Wellington, Queenstown and New Plymouth. The New Zealand we visit today is an amalgam of these two cultures, molded by the fabric of this diverse landscape. New Zealand is blessed with stunning alpine vistas, golden beaches, rocky sea cliffs and verdant meadows and hillsides where sheep graze placidly. The visitor, initially overwhelmed by its beauty, soon discovers that the people exude a warm hospitality unlike anything he or she is likely to have experienced elsewhere. New Zealand always has more delightful sights to discover, for first-time visitors and for those making their tenth trip. Frontiers’ South Pacific experts have explored many niche areas not found on most itineraries and thus are able to customize a unique and unforgettable experience for any traveler. n

New Zealand is home to several of the world’s top one hundred golf courses, including Kauri Cliffs and Cape Kidnappers on the North Island

The North Island

Kauri Cliffs

The varied landscape of the North Island fascinates those who visit. Journey north to see the picturesque harbors, rugged beaches and expansive kauri forests of the Bay of Islands. In the south, rolling farm country, Pacific Coast scenery, fruitful vineyards and the capital city of Wellington shape the region’s complexion. Approximately two-thirds of the country’s indigenous people, the Maori, live on the North Island, centered predominantly in the Rotorua and Taupo regions. To explore the central North Island is to experience its volcanic heart. Here, travelers will see the active mud pools and geysers of Rotorua, dig their own hot thermal bath at Hot Water Beach and walk the active volcanic pathways of White Island. The Tongariro Crossing, dubbed one of the top 10 day hikes in the world, crosses the multi-cratered volcanic terrain of Mount Tongariro. Let Frontiers work with you to plan the perfect itinerary for an exciting North Island holiday. n

The South Island The majesty of the Southern Alps sets the stage for the scenic splendor of the South Island. These awesome mountains run the length of the island and breathtaking vistas appear around every turn. This is paradise for the hiker and outdoor enthusiast whose choices are limited only by time and energy. Enjoy a one-day hike on the Queen Charlotte Walkway at the island’s top end, or go for the granddaddy of all New Zealand treks: the six-day hike across the fabled Milford Track in Southland. Those looking for gentler pursuits should check out the region’s top-class vineyards. The sauvignon blanc of the Marlborough vineyards takes a back seat to no other. Further south, the Otago region’s pinot noir has put New Zealand reds on the map. Visit genteel Christchurch, the city that most reflects the country’s Anglican heritage. Christchurch is known as the “garden city” for good reason. It’s also home to a stunning art center.

Australia Fish Tasmania Explore This Unique Wilderness Island Crisscrossed by rivers, lakes and shallow lagoons called tarns, Tasmania’s immaculate environment attracts fishermen from around the world who seek to pit their skills against the guile of the wild trout. This beautiful island’s most productive waters are the broad, crystal-clear lakes where big wild trout feed on abundant mayfly and caddis hatches. In the mornings and evenings, the mayflies and caddis flies hatch in droves and rise off the water like steam. Trout gorge themselves on the insects, ready and willing to devour whatever they find in front of them. Trout fishing in Tasmania is often compared to stalking flats for bonefish, not only due to its broad, shallow waters, but because anglers walk the edge of the lagoons looking for browns and rainbows that are on the rise or tailing.

One of our top outfitters in Tasmania, Ken Orr

Tasmania fly fishing is at its best from mid- to-late November through February, though most waters remain open until the end of April. Outfitters represented by Frontiers include Ken Orr’s TASMANIA TROUT EXPEDITIONS and Peter Hayes of Tasmania’s PREMIER FLY FISHING GUIDES.

Elegant Journeys in Australia

Australia — “A Fair Dinkum Land” WHEN AN AUSSIE SAYS THAT SOMETHING IS “FAIR DINKUM,” IT MEANS IT’S THE GENUINE ARTICLE. We think that Australia is a “fair dinkum”

When a traveler does commit to make the journey, it’s important to decide what to see and experience. For those interested in the aboriginal culture, a visit to Kakadu National Park, the Daintree Rainforest (one of the largest still in existence) or the Great Barrier Reef, the Australian winter (May to October) is the best time to visit. Those who want to see Sydney or Melbourne, drive the Great Ocean Road or get up close and personal with indigenous wildlife on Kangaroo Island should plan to visit during the summer (November to April).

Make a visit to Ayers Rock

Call on the experts at Frontiers to assist you in planning an amazing holiday in Australia. Our knowledge of this beautiful land is extensive and we want your trip to include everything you need to make it perfect. Our staff will explore your interests and create the right itinerary. You’ll have a “fair dinkum” trip. We promise! n

place to visit! This vast land, a country as big as the United States and a continent in its own right, has something to offer everyone. Ask a random sampling of folks where they would travel if they had a choice of any place in the world, and it’s a fair bet that a large percentage would choose Australia. For many, Australia seems so far away they can only dream of visiting, but the overnight flight is a small price to pay for the wonders waiting on the other side of the Pacific.

Frontiers has a long history in Africa dating back to our first safari in November of 1971. It was a trial run for a new flying safari called “Sasafari. The operators designed a wonderful itinerary utilizing Aero-Commander aircraft which stayed with the party throughout South Africa, Botswana, what was then Rhodesia, and Mozambique. The Frontiers safari remained viable until 1976 when winds of political change swept the region. During our short, five-year presence there, we were honored to be chosen as the safari operator for such special interest groups as the Board of Directors of the San Diego Zoo, the Board of the Denver Museum of Natural History, the National Wildlife Federation, the American Museum of Natural History, and the National Audubon Society. Thereafter, we focused more on East Africa and coordinated the Africa travel on multiple departures for the Smithsonian Associates and the World Wildlife Fund. Along the way, our staff developed a high level of expertise, and discerning travelers sought out Frontiers to develop private itineraries embracing a wide range of interests. Because we do not own or operate any camps or lodges in Africa, we can offer unbiased recommendations. We work with the best guides, camps, lodges and safari operators such as Wilderness Safaris, Abercrombie & Kent, Belmond, Africa House Safaris, Adventura Tours and &Beyond. Our suggestions are based purely on your objectives and where the peak game viewing may be at your desired time to travel. Where possible, we strive to contribute to conservation efforts and we encourage our guests to be exposed to and engage with various projects that will broaden their experience in Africa and be a part of a bigger story. With more than four decades of experience and countless staff trips, our destination knowledge is unparalleled and our enthusiasm is contagious. We look forward to sharing our expertise with you whether you are a first-time visitor or a veteran Africa traveler. n
