Over 150 Years of Expertise in Fly Fishing Travel Hank Ingram joined Frontiers in 1999. With his background as a fishing guide in the American West and owner of a custom construction company, Hank has played a key role as a fishing / shooting specialist and a consultant on lodges. He is the head of the South America Fishing and Shooting Departments and has traveled, fished and shot on four continents with Frontiers.

Ben Hoffman left the public relations field to join Frontiers in March 2005 as the South America Fishing Senior Program Manager. He is an avid trout fisherman and hunter and loves to talk to clients about outdoor travel. Ben has extensive knowledge of the trout waters in Chile and Argentina, from Patagonia to Tierra del Fuego. He has also fished for dorado and shot birds in Argentina and Uruguay. A native of Tanzania, Elaine Wissolik joined the South America Department in 2003. Elaine has many years of experience in the international travel industry, managing the taimen program in Mongolia and working closely with her colleagues to organize both fishing and hunting trips to Argentina and Chile. Elaine enjoys the outdoors and is happy to share her first-hand knowledge. Sue Szakelyhidi has been an integral member of the South Pacific team for 25 years, and worked closely with Judy Greene. There is always something fresh and exciting to learn about New Zealand and Australia, and Sue relishes the trips she makes to each of these countries that enable her to tailor itineraries to each client’s expectations.

Tom Gilliland, a lifelong sportsman, joined Frontiers in 2006. He coordinates dorado and peacock bass fishing trips along with bird and big game shooting venues throughout South America, and fishing in Alaska. Outside of the office, Tom is an experienced fly fisherman and hunter who enjoys sharing his knowledge with others. As son of the Frontiers founders, Mike Fitzgerald, was brought up in the outdoor travel business. He has handled a number of sporting programs for Frontiers through the years. Today as president, Mike works closely with the Senior Management Team and the Department Heads and is quite involved with the South Pacific programs. Mike loves to travel with his fly rods, shotguns, cameras and golf clubs. He is passionate about the outdoors and conservation. He sits on the Boards of the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership and Bonefish & Tarpon Trust. For Mike, trout fishing is at the top of his fly fishing ladder. He has chased trout on five continents, and for him, New Zealand represents the true essence of the sport.
With recent trips to New Zealand and Australia, Kristene Fitzgerald manages our South Pacific Program. Kristene works with Sue Szakelyhidi, and the team has extensive familiarization Down Under. In addition to her responsibilities in the South Pacific, Kristene coordinates trout fishing and general travel programs in Slovenia, Scotland, England and Ireland. She is an avid fly fisher and has tackled a number of trout streams in the American West, New Zealand and Chile. She also has done a fair amount of saltwater fishing on a variety of flats in the Florida Keys, the Bahamas, Mexico and Belize. Without the fly rod, Kristene is passionate about diving, fine cuisine, wines and loves spending time with her family and two dogs, Cara and Haggin. As the Africa Department Manager, Kathy Schulz has custom-designed photographic, fishing and hunting safaris throughout Africa. With more than 26 years of experience in the business, she is well qualified to plan an exploration of the many facets of Africa including its vast savannahs, expansive deserts and water holes that teem with exotic wildlife. Richard Scrope began his career in the sporting business in 2008. He opened his own sporting travel company in 2012, and joined Frontiers in 2015. Richard has shot and fished in numerous countries around the world. His world travel experience in varied and challenging locations enables him to pursue his other passion; photography. He has been an avid fisherman since his upbringing on the Kennett River. Tarquin Millington-Drake opened the Frontiers United Kingdom office in 1993 and has overseen its evolution into the sporting institution it is today. Tarquin has traveled to countless destinations and leads the UK Sales Team and operations as Managing Director.

Estancia Tipiliuke Tres Lagos Lodge The Rio Chimehuin is considered the epicenter of fly fishing in Argentina. Below the “boca,” or mouth, of the river, lies ESTANCIA TIPILIUKE. In Memoriam: Susan Burt Fitzgerald 1939-2015 On August 20, 2015, we lost a great lady. Susie Fitzgerald was the other half of the famous ‘Mike and Susie Fitzgerald’ team that founded Frontiers in 1969 and not only created the sporting travel trend which is the norm today but set the standards for how patrons of the sporting industry should be looked after. As she always used to say “Michael handles the forest, and I handle the trees” and that is exactly how it was. The standards she set have not changed, indeed we still all strive to keep to her standards today. She almost single-handedly introduced the world to the Rio Grande, and to Christmas and Alphonse Islands among others. As a supplier, if Susie Fitzgerald believed in you, you were on your way. There was no greater enthusiast or optimist. She will be greatly missed by us all.

La Zona — The Lair of Giants Argentina
Entre Rios Province The golden dorado, which calls the Uruguay River home, can rip a fishing rod right out of an angler’s hands. A ferocious, high-flying fight follows any take. Dorado in the Uruguay grow to enormous size, with 50-pounders ready to slash at flies and lures. Twenty-pounders are only the middle of the food chain. These voracious hunters will destroy anything that they can catch and swallow. Conventional tackle and fly anglers come to LA ZONA to realize their fishing dreams. Top water action is prevalent; watching a huge fish engulf an offering is a thrill few will ever experience. All the action takes place in the tailwater discharge of the Grande Salto Dam on the Uruguay River, the border between Argentina and Uruguay. Only two outfitters have rights to fish this 1-1/2-mile fishery. The lodge’s custom skiffs are appropriate for both fly and spin fishing and have casting platforms in the bow and stern.

A Nervous Waters Property The Ibera Marsh is a three-million acre subtropical wetland bested in size only by the Florida Everglades. In the heart of this marsh is Nervous Waters’ PIRA LODGE and prime habitat for the brutish yet acrobatic golden dorado. Perched on the bow of one of the lodge’s Hell’s Bay flats skiffs, anglers enjoy the dramatic sights and rhythmic sounds of this eco-rich environment. Chile A DEEP, CRYSTAL CLEAR LAKE QUIETLY HOLDS THE REFLECTION OF ANCIENT GLACIERS. Suddenly,
a five-pound rainbow trout leaps out of the water to catch a passing dragonfly. Not far away, the lake becomes a river, and in one of its many eddies dozens of trout feed on emerging caddis flies. Stands of bamboo and fuchsia flowers blow in the gentle breeze of this temperate rainforest climate. High on a mountain ridge, a gaucho on horseback tends his sheep and shifts in his saddle to look east over the wide valley and the winding river below where an angler casts his line. Fly fishermen dream about having their own private river full of trout. The ESTANCIA DE LOS RIOS is the realization of that dream. This 360,000-acre ranch has nearly 60 miles of private water for guests to fish during a week’s stay. The upper Rio Cisnes, the program’s focal point, is filled with brown trout that often take dry flies. This river is wadable, as are several spring creeks on the ranch. The lower stretches of the river are accessed by drift boat. Guests can also fish for cruising brown trout on several private lakes. The CHILEAN FJORDS program treats fly fishermen to a week-long adventure aboard a 53-foot cabin cruiser. Peacock bass, arowana, bicuda, payara, arapaima and traira are just a few of the tough characters that swim here. Some stretches of the Agua Boa are large, but most often it splits into small branches that weave through the dense jungle. If not for the thick green canopy overhead, the white sand river bottom and sandbars might make travelers believe they are in the Caribbean. Frontiers has a long history in Africa dating back to our first safari in November of 1971. It was a trial run for a new flying safari called “Sasafari.� The operators designed a wonderful itinerary utilizing Aero-Commander aircraft which stayed with the party throughout South Africa, Botswana, what was then Rhodesia, and Mozambique. The Frontiers safari remained viable until 1976 when winds of political change swept the region. During our short, five-year presence there, we were honored to be chosen as the safari operator for such special interest groups as the Board of Directors of the San Diego Zoo, the Board of the Denver Museum of Natural History, the National Wildlife Federation, the American Museum of Natural History, and the National Audubon Society. Thereafter, we focused more on East Africa and coordinated the Africa travel on multiple departures for the Smithsonian Associates and the World Wildlife Fund. Along the way, our staff developed a high level of expertise, and discerning travelers sought out Frontiers to develop private itineraries embracing a wide range of interests. Because we do not own or operate any camps or lodges in Africa, we can offer unbiased recommendations.
