Congratulations on attaining your Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree! It is quite a prestigious achievement, and you are now in the <2% of American nurses with terminal degrees. While we know the journey may have been challenging, your perseverance and hard work have paid off; you are very well-equipped to lead teams, engage patients, and change systems. Thank you for trusting FNU’s DNP faculty to coach and support you during your journey. ACADEMIC APPAREL AND TRADITIONS
GOWNS
The master’s gown is black and has an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist, hanging down in the traditional manner. The rear is square cut, and the front has an arc cutaway. The doctoral gown has bell-shaped sleeves. The material may vary, and black is recommended. The gown is front-faced with velvet; three bars of velvet are used across the sleeves. Facings and crossbars may be of the color distinctive to the discipline, matched with the binding or edging of the hood appropriate to the particular doctoral degree.
HOODS
In all cases, the hood is black and must be the same material as the gown. Hoods are lined with official university colors. The colors for Frontier Nursing University are blue and white. The hood length for the master’s degree is three and one-half feet; for the doctor’s degree, four feet. Only doctoral hoods shall have panels at the sides. Hood binding is to be velvet, three inches and five inches for the master’s and doctor’s degrees, respectively; the color indicates the discipline to which the degree pertains. The color associated with Nursing –the discipline for this university – is apricot.
CAPS
In all cases, the cap is black and is to be worn indoors and out. Caps are made of fabric matched to the gown; velvet is appropriate for doctoral degrees only. Mortarboards are generally recommended for a master’s degree. A tassel is to be fastened to the midpoint of the top of the cap only. The tassel should be black or the color appropriate to the university, with the exception of the doctor’s cap, which may have a tassel of gold. For the master’s degree recipient, the tassel is worn on the right until the degree is conferred. It is then moved to the left front quarter.
COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS
Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN President and CEO, National League for Nursing
Healthcare leader. Accomplished innovator. Nursing champion. Under Dr. Beverly Malone’s leadership, the National League for Nursing (NLN) has advanced the science of nursing education through enhancing stakeholder collaboration, increasing diversity in nursing scholarship, and championing evidence-based practice. Dr. Malone’s distinguished career has blended policy, education, administration, and clinical practice, including as Federal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health under President Bill Clinton.
As a reviewer, she contributed to the groundbreaking IOM report, “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health,“ and served on the Minority Health Federal Advisory Committee. Dr. Malone has been awarded more than 20 honorary doctorates. Presently, Dr. Malone serves as vice chair at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Board of Directors, co-leads the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) Health Professional Education and Communication Working Group, and serves on NAM’s Steering Committee. She is also a member of ecoAmerica’s Leadership Circle Executive Committee.
The American Nurses Association (ANA) named Dr. Malone as their 2024 Hall of Fame Award recipient. The American Academy of Nursing honored Dr. Malone with their 2024 Mary Elizabeth Carnegie Leadership in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity (EDI) Award. The National Black Nurses Association recognized Dr. Malone as a 2024 inaugural Fellow in the Academy of Diversity Leaders in Nursing (FADLN). In a remarkable recognition of her contributions to global health care, Dr. Malone was profiled by The Lancet (2024), one of the most prestigious and influential medical journals in the world. This honor underscores the significance of her work and places her among an elite group of leaders shaping the future of health care.
The year prior, Modern Healthcare, a leading publication in the health care field, honored Dr. Malone as one of the nation’s leading health care executives by naming her to the 2023 list of the Top 50 Most Influential Clinical Executives in Healthcare. The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) presented Dr. Malone with the prestigious 2023 HRH Princess Muna Al Hussein Award for her commitment to advancing the nursing profession and excellence in nursing professional practice across international borders, and Dr. Malone was listed in Modern Healthcare’s 100 Most Influential People in Health Care for the fourth consecutive year (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023). That same year, she was honored by the American Nurses Association with the prestigious President’s Award and was selected for the M. Louise Fitzpatrick Award for Transformative Leadership by Villanova University. Dr. Malone was also featured as one of 25 Outstanding Women during Women’s History Month by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education.
Modern Healthcare also has honored her with a Top 25 Women Leaders’ Luminary Award in 2021 and named her to the inaugural list of five Minority Healthcare Luminaries.

Founded in 1922 by six nursing students, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma) has more than 100,000 active members and 600 chapters at institutions of higher education and healthcare partners from Armenia, Australia, and Botswana to Thailand, the United States, and Wales. The Chi Pi chapter was chartered on December 30, 2015.

COMMENCEMENT DAY CHECKLIST
Commencement is a wonderful day, but we know it can also be hectic at times. To help make sure you make the most of this special day, here are answers to some of the most common questions we receive:
What do I need to know about my Frontier.edu email address? Alumni will retain access to their frontier.edu email accounts for one year after their degree conferral date. We encourage you to update your information with us so we may continue to share news and resources. To report a new email address, please contact us at FNUnews@frontier.edu with your name and preferred email address.
If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out at alumni@frontier.edu. Thank you for your continued support and for being a valued part of the Frontier Nursing University community.
Can I precept Frontier students? Frontier Nursing University Alumni are uniquely qualified to become FNU preceptors! All preceptors must have a valid, unencumbered U.S. license to practice and one year of relevant experience in an advanced practice role. Alumni can sign up to precept at frontier.edu/preceptor
