Thefts marr new allotment opening

Handouts triple as area feels the economic pinch

POVERTY in the area is getting much worse. That’s the bleak outlook offered by the charity that operates a Food Bank covering the Frome Valley.

The Yate and Chipping Sodbury Foodbank says it is on course to triple the amount of goods it is giving to hard up families and individuals.

The demand for the service is so great that the charity is opening a new branch in Mangotsfield to add to the Yate HQ and a Thornbury outlet that started operating in the summer.

Although the foodbank is based in Yate, those behind the scheme say that many of their customers come from Frampton Cotterell, Winterbourne, Coalpit Heath and Iron Acton.

It says those who come to the shop on Station Road have had to make some stark decisions over how to survive in recent austerity times.

Sporting prowess in every corner

I’M writing this on a Saturday afternoon, within hearing distance of the Beesmoor Playing Fields. Even with the doors and windows shut, I can tell there is a tasty football game going on.

You’d have to be deaf not to notice we’ve already had the first goal of the afternoon. I’ve just had the first ball in the garden of the season. Frampton Athletic may play some nice football, but it doesn’t stop the odd ball disappearing over the neighbouring hedges.

The club start the season on a high, with the reserve team having been promoted at the end of last season.

They aren’t the only ones, because we seem to be blessed with a plethora of sporting talent in the area.

By my reckoning there were at least 9 promotions to celebrate this year, including Frampton Athletic Reserves (promoted for the last 2 seasons), Frampton Netball Club, and multiple successes for Winterbourne, Coalpit Heath and Frampton Cricket teams.

But for a promotion play-off defeat, Frampton Cotterell Rugby Club would have joined that list. Don’t forget that Winterbourne Utd FC were elevated to the Western League a couple of seasons ago.

If you like sport, we are truly blessed with talent. The Frome Valley really punches above its weight. It won’t stop anytime soon either, as there are thriving youth sections.

Allotments to open despite thefts

Tea and cake for new plot holders to mark opening of Jubilee Allotments NEW allotments in Frampton Cotterell are to open on time despite the site being subject to thieves who stole equipment worth thousands of pounds.

The new Jubilee Allotments on Church Road will open on Saturday 5th October, giving scores of local people a chance to grow their own food.

Many people had been on a waiting list for several years.

The project was dealt a blow in September when theives made away with several items including the front gates.

Water troughs and a standpipe were also taken in a theft which has coast the Parish Council and the contractor approximately £1500.

Lee Dunnill, of contractors LD Fencing and Hard Landscaping said, “I’m not happy, but what

can you do. I’ve lost a lot of money and so has the council.

It’s frustrating”.

Following the thefts, Mr Dunill has arranged for people to be on site around the clock.

The council will hand over the allotments to tenants at a special ceremony at the Jubilee Allotments on October 5. Tea and cake is being served, and local farmer Hugh Simmons will cut the ribbon as guest of honour.

Mr Simmons volunteered to plough the field before contractors moved in.

The new allotment holders met with council officials in September to hear more about the site and to receive their contracts.

Struggling to survive: the anonymous poor having to accept handouts to live ONE person was sitting at the table in the foodbank, enjoying a cup of tea and a biscuit, chatting to staff.

Outwardly a cheerful, social event, but scratch beneath the surface and you realise how raw the emotions are; how difficult times are for some people.

This person was dressed smartly, spoke nicely and yet was waiting to receive bags of goods from the foodbank.

Theirs was a story repeated many times over in the Frome Valley as hard economic times have hit home.

I was told how a comfortable existence was undone by circumstances. Near to tears, this person tried to articulate the embarrassment - the humiliation - they felt in having to come and ask for help at a foodbank.

And yet, there was also a feeling of overwhelming gratitude for the help at hand and the friendly, non-judgmental people who help here.

There is not much more I can tell of this person’s story. To reveal more would risk identifying them, and that is a fear that sits heavily with many beneficiaries of this scheme.

Indeed volunteers make sure that people taking food parcels away do so in matching carrier bags so that others will think they’ve just returned from a normal shop.

One man who is happy to be identified though, is Bob Vernon, one of the organisers of the foodbank.

A calm and cheerful person he has spearheaded a rapid expansion of the service this year. He admits to being surprised it’s having to be done.

“I would like nothing better than to retire like I thought I had done 6 years ago. It’s sad, but as I’ve just said to a lady, we are here for them because we realise there are people in that position. No else is going to help them”.

He tells me that in 2012, 600 people were fed. By the end of August this year, they’d already fed over 1200 people. A three fold increase in a year underlines the problem There is a 50% increase in food given out over the summer holidays as there are no free school dinners or breakfast clubs, and parents struggle to

fill the gap. The main centre is at The Candle on Station Road in Yate, but in June a Thornbury outlet opened and last month a Mangotsfield branch came into operation at Resound Church on Blackhorse Road.

They system works on a voucher scheme. People in need can get them with a referral from places such as schools, doctors, health visitors, churches and job centres.

The foodbank issues one and a half tonnes of food a month. It keeps some food at its shop, but there are also 5 tonnes stored at two warehouses.

Food is supplied from churches, schools, members of the public and supermarket collections.

Bob says he has customers from Frampton Cotterell, Winterbourne, Coalpit Heath and Iron Acton.

At a time when talk is of the start of a recovery, Bob Vernon has his own theories as to why foodbanks are getting busier.

“Everything that is happening is happening to those less fortunate. So, yes it’s people on benefits, but it’s also dragging in people on low income. Things like the bedroom cap are hitting people who are in social housing,

also food prices are significantly increasing”.

“Also we’ve had a long hard winter, and if you’ve got children in the house you don’t turn the heating off, so it’s hitting more and more people, dragging people in, whilst the upper and middle layers aren’t really feeling it as much”.

Some in the community still refuse to believe that there is a need for foodbanks in the area, but Bob passionately defends the project.

to set it up that we didn’t need it in this area because it was a reasonably affluent area”.

“I had it again before we opened the Thornbury branch, because it’s taken as an insult by the town, the councillors who say ‘hang on this is our area and you say it’s in need - no it isn’t’.”

local churches but Bob Vernon is at pains to point out religion is not front and centre of the debate.

“We are not here to beat people over the head with a bible. From coming in they know we are associated with the church, but not all of our volunteers are church goers - it doesn’t matter”.

For those who are in need but are hesitant to ask, Bob Vernon has a message.

“We are your neighbours, we are your community and we just want to help. Don’t feel embarrassed”.

For the rest of us who might be tempted to judge he has a warning.

“This could happen to anyone. We say we are all only one pay day away from a crisis”.

PLANS for a massive solar farm in Coalpit Heath have been approved by councillors.

Members of the South Gloucestershhire’s Planning Committee voted unanimously to back the scheme at Says Farm, off the Badminton Road.

Both protester and supporters got extra time before the vote to put their case.

Although Westerleigh Parish Council objected strongly to the scheme it has negotiated a community fund with the developers, AAE Renewables.

A trust fund, administered by the Parish Council will get £1000

for each megawatt produced each year. That should mean around £17,000 will go to the fund a year. The money must be spent on enviromental schemes that benefit the community.

Up to £7,000 in the first year will go to Avon Wildlife Trust to do work on the site.

Local Councillor Claire Young said, “I appreciate some people will be unhappy at the result, but everyone had a fair hearing”.

Guide leader honoured for four decades of work in movement

‘Mimi Special’ on menu of top restuarant

A FRAMPTON Cotterell guide leader is to be honoured for four decades of work with the movement.

Caroline Hanks is being awarded the Silver Sea Stag Award this month for her services to guiding over the last 36 years.

For the last 20 years she has been with the 1st Frampton Cotterell Guides.

She has also been a District Commissioner for Frampton, Frenchay and Winterbourne as well as a Division Commisioner for the Frome Valley.

In these roles she took over units in danger of closure and found new leaders, which she then supported through their training.

Caroline has also run Brownie units and has stepped in to run the Rainbow unit at Zion for a year, saving it from closure.

Originally from Shropshire, Caroline is a theatre nurse at Frenchay hospital.

Complaints over ‘Gypsy’ term I have just read your article in the fromevalleyvoice [about plans to expand a gypsy site in Henfield].

I am not aware that the site where Mr and Mrs Harvey live is a gypsy site. The planning permission given many years ago to Mr and Mrs Harvey and their children did not mention “gypsy site”.

The permission they were given was for a home for them and their family in difficult times.

Later planning was given for another chalet.

I was shocked that the family have tried to apply for an additional 4 static caravans, 2 utility blocks, space for storage of up to 5 caravans and car

Man convicted of Harris Barton fly tipping A man has been found guilty of fly tipping household waste in Frampton Cotterell after he appeared at Yate Magistrates Court on Tuesday 17 September.

Robert Hooper, 21, of Camden Road, Bath was given a 12 month supervision order and sentenced to 120 hours unpaid work as part of a community order.

He was also ordered to pay £1,010.96 in costs plus a £60 victim’s surcharge. The magistrates considered it to be a serious offence for which they could have imposed a custodial sentence.

Hooper pleaded guilty to transporting and fly tipping approximately ten carrier bags of household rubbish on private land at Harris Barton in Frampton Cotterell. The location of the offence was at the end of a residential lane leading to open countryside, frequented by walkers.

Gloucestershire Council officers, Hooper confirmed that the waste was his, but claimed that he had given it to an unnamed friend to dispose of on his behalf.

ORGANISERS of the Watermore 10k run say they will make it an annual event after its runaway success this year. £1500 has been raised for Watermore School by the event, which was run at the end of September.

154 runners signed up, with 139 making to the start line. One of the organisers, Nicola Ware said weeks of planning had paid off.

was perfect for the race. It was very good and the marshals were brilliant. We’ve had so many emails thanking us for putting on the event” The ‘Rainbow Run’ for children also proved successful with cash also being raised with a post race barbecue.

The quickest time was 37 minutes despite the hilly course.

A FRAMPTON duo have run up nearly £1000 after completing the Bristol Half Marathon - along with their guitars!

Darren Addicott and Tim Rice are the members of band ‘One Too Many’. They wowed the crowds in Millenium Square before and after the race and stopped enroute four times to serenade the spectators.

Despite having to carry their guitars, the pair finished the half marathon in 2 hours, 27 minutes.

Car park charge small price for saving Orchard Harvest Day TRUSTEES are hoping this year’s Orchard Harvest Day at the Medieval Barn will be a huge success after the Winterbourne event was reprieved.

The October 6 date was oringinally due to be cancelled.

The barn’s two other big dates, the Medieval Fayre and Spring Craft Fayre both had to be cancelled because of parking problems.

Trustees had to make the decision because of the end of an agreement to use a farmer’s nearby field for parking on a grace and favour basis.

Concerns had been raised about insurance arrangements, but that has been solved for October Harvest Day by charging motorists £1 towards insurance.

With a £2 admission fee for the

over 12’s, the Orchard Harvest Day still provides a value for money experience.

The day runs from 11-4 and the organisers promise a packed programme including apples being crushed on a horse-drawn 19th century stone mill and then taken to the 200 year old press to make into cider.

Iron Acton pub regulars walk Frome Valley for charity THE idea came about over a couple of drinks at the White Hart in Iron Acton. The result was £1360 raised for the Great Western Air Ambulance charity.

The idea was to walk the

Frome Valley, from Eastville Park back to Iron Acton.

24 walkers and 10 dogs took part, along with a sizeable support crew.

The venture was blessed with great weather on August Bank Holiday. Good progress was made despite important refuelling stops at the White Lion in Frenchay and the Globe in Frampton Cotterell.

Once finished the walkers enjoyed a well earned pint or two at the White Hart where a raffle was held with prizes from local businesses and people.

Organiser Catherine Neck said, “It’s not bad for what started as a little idea to raise possibly a couple of hundred pounds. We all have brilliant memories of the day and hope to do something similar next year – maybe do the other half of the Frome Valley walkway”.

Kid’s have tons of fun on the Shopkeeper is day the circus came to town new councillor It’s not everyday you can have a circus all to your own, but for some lucky school children that is exactly what happened.

Circus Sensible from Manchester pitched their big top in the playing fields of Frampton Cotterell C of E Primary School.

The first lesson after registration was how to have fun. The ‘Sensible Brothers’

were quick to disown their name and entertain the children with juggling, plate spinning and a lesson in how to get your whole body through a tennis racquet.

During the day they imparted inside knowledge with a series of circus skills workshops.

The visit was rounded off by another performance for parents and pre-school children.

THE owner of the Nisa convenience store in Frampton Cotterell has become a member of the Parish Council.

Edwina Pennell was selected by councillors at a council meeting in 11 September.

The vacancy arose after the resignation of Mark Forsyth in July.

When a deadline to request an election by local people ran out, the council was able to coopt someone to the role.

Three people came forward to be interviewed by councillors before they made their decision.

Zion Church opens Fancy a sing? How about 31 doors for Harvest hours of hymns (non-stop) IT’S taken 9 months and half a million pounds, but the rebuilding of Zion Church in Frampton Cotterell is almost complete.

The congregation is planning to move back into the church in time for the Harvest Festival service this month.

People will notice a big difference. The church itself has been stripped out back to the walls and re-modelled. A new ‘Beacon’ reception and community area has been added to the back of the building.

There is still more work to do to completely finish the building, such as the installation

of acoustic curtains, but minister Andrew Newell says the time has come to make the move back “I’m quite excited and a bit more than ready to move. It’s been a long time and it will be nice to be home”.

He has issued an invitation to anyone in the village to come and have a look at the revamped Zion building.

“We’re very enthusiastic to use all the buildings well for the community. We have lots of ideas for more community activities now we have more space

St Peters Church and Frampton Cotterell C of E Primary School have come together for ‘Frampton Hymnathon’ It aims to sing hymns non stop for 31 hours at St.Peters Church. It will start on Friday 16th May 2014 with performances by children from Frampton Cotterell C of E School.

After continuing through the night there will be a grand finale on Saturday 17 May. A special family service will be held on Sunday 18 May to celebrate the unique weekend’s events.

It’s hoped that individuals, groups and businesses will get involved and raise sponsorship.

The money made will go to projects at the school and church.

One of the organisers, Helen Harding, said “We are inviting groups from across the community of every size and

ability and of all faiths or none to participate. They do not need to be of performance standard, they just need a desire to share in the joy of singing in such an awe-inspiring building for these good causes”.

Frampton Cotterell Male Voice Choir are looking for new blood to attend their rehearsals at St Saviours Hall in Coalpit Heath on Fridays between 7.30 and 9pm The choir has been around since the 1920’s and is still going strong. Paul Crook is a member of the both the choir and the Frampton Shantymen who also sing on Fridays, and says “ New members interested in joining are not required to audition, be able to read music or have much knowledge of singing. What you must have is a willingness to learn and love to singing in four part harmony”.

Coalpit Heath Friends in and Frampton get Fundraiser THE FRIENDS of Frome Valley new lamposts Work costing around £150,000 to replace old concrete lamposts with news metal ones is drawing to a close.

168 columns are being replaced as part of a routine maintenance programme. Each one costs between £600 and £1,000 although the lanterns themselves are reused and the old columns recycled.

The work began on 17 July and will finish on 11 Oct, with workmen making their way around the roads in alphabetical order.

Medical centre will be out in force this month as they look to raise money to buy a new ECG machine for the surgery.

Volunteers will be at the surgery on October 5, 12 and 19 during flu jab sessions.

They will have tables of books for sale as well as a raffle and the groups popular lottery.

The Friends are also looking to recruit new members, with their AGM on December 4.

Cubs seek leader THE 2nd Frampton Cotterell Scout Group are looking for someone to take the helm at their cub pack.

The group says no experience is necessary, just a lot of enthusiasm.

The group has been running for nearly 50 years and meets at the Pavilion in Crossbow Community Association.

Frampton Athletic top table after unbeaten September FRAMPTON Athletic’s first team have enjoyed a fantastic start to the season, winning all 6 of their games, including one Bristol Premier Combination Cup match and one GFA Senior Amateur Cup game.

They sit at the top of the table at the end of September. Having brought in a number of new faces, Frampton have left no time in bonding the new team together, scoring 16 goals and conceding just 4 goals in their opening 6 games.

The highlight of the new season was the 5-1 GFA Cup win against Downend Forresters from the Bristol & Suburban leagues, which saw all 5 goals

scored by Frampton Athletic veteran Mike Beake.

Frampton Athletic Reserves have had a less favourable start to the season, winning just 1 of their opening 5 games of the season. In the league, they have won one, drawn 3 and lost one. They were also knocked out in the first round of the GFA Intermediate Cup, falling to a 4-0 defeat at home to Bristol Bilbao.

Club Secretary Nick Talbot said, “Frampton Athletic will be looking to continue their run of form for as long as possible and maintain their number one position in the table. The Reserves will be looking to turn their fortunes around and start to string some good results together to move themselves up the table”.

Iron Acton look for promotion push after good month

Iron Acton FC are in buoyant mood after a strong start to the season.

The club are hoping to continue their push in the Bristol & District Senior Division. Iron Acton have won three of their first five games, including the cup tie against AFC Mangotsfield where 16 year old keeper Sam Wilmot kept them in game.

In the league they started with two wins. The first was 4-1 against Longwell Green ‘A’, with Josh Donaldson scoring 2.

James Burke scored a brace in their 2-1 win over AEK Boco Reserves, with goalkeeper Ross Blackman playing a big part.

Jake Peters scored in the 1-1 draw with Wick Reserves and the 4-3 reverse to Hallen ‘A’.

Olly Barker scored the other two goals.

Manager Adam Taylor said, “It’s been quite a positive start to the season despite an early season injury crisis. It’s given me cause for optimism this season and I will be looking to get promotion following the addition of 6 new players”.

FRAMPTON Cotterell Rugby Club started the new season in style with victories all round.

All three senior teams were unbeaten after the first two weeks. Frampton firsts began their Gloucester Premier league season with an excellent home win versus Stroud 40 - 15 Flanker Joe Bennett ran the show with a hatrick of tries. The game also marked the debut of four of last years under 18s into the first team, an excellent boost for Fram’s junior section .

The game also saw the debut of our new Italian import Michele Canulli. Michele is on a years visit from Rome and staying with a Frampton family,learning English and playing rugby .

by Bristol and Argentina International rugby player Mario Sambucetti .

Fram firsts remain top of the league after a fine second league win at Tewkesbury where prop Mark Smith was the outstanding Frampton player.

WINTERBOURNE United FC are looking forward to playing home fixtures again, following the installation of a 3G pitch at their Oaklands Park HQ. Despite being nine games into the new season, Saturday October 5th will see United run out at home for the first time.

The club have retained the bulk of the team that did do well at the end of last year when securing our place in the Western League Premier Division and have added a few new faces which it’s hoped should see them cement that place come next May.

Chairman Robin Maggs said, “our current league position does not look good, but I am hoping the fact we have not played a home game and have some games in hand on most teams will see us move up the table soon enough.

Our form has been very good at times especially in the FA Vase where we have won both our games so far, the first at Ringwood Town and then against United Services Portsmouth” The next round is on October 19th, and has United away again to Tavistock AFC. A win here will net the club £900.00 in prize money.

Frampton netballers top of table after stellar September

FRAMPTON Cotterell Netball club are top of the table after a strong start to the winter season.

Frampton Cotterell’s first team started their season on the 7th of September, in their newly promoted division, with a hard fought win against an established Frys team. At half time, Frampton were only ahead by one goal, but with the newly formed shooting partnership of Teresa Chadwick and Emily Dible (voted player of the match) they achieved a win 25-21.

Frampton’s second match, played on the 14th of September, was an easier match against their old rivals Olveston, Down

to the forceful defensive duo of Joely Reed (player of the match) and Seona Bleakman, Frampton stormed ahead to an impressive 32-11 win.

On the 21st of September, Frampton faced Bristol and West squad. Their set plays and dominance in the circles, proved too much for their young opponents, winning the match 48-23, with Amy Davidge’s storming display in defence, earning her player of the match.

Frampton’s newly formed second team, who entered the Avon league this year; had a tough opener against Panthers, losing 34-12.

Filton Golf Club is a well-established private members club situated in the north of Bristol. Although predominantly a private members club, Filton also offers a very welcoming and enjoyable experience to guests and visitors alike.

Minis get chance to shine in new tournament

ASPIRING rugby players will get the chance to show of their skills in a kids rugby tournament being hosted by Frampton Cotterell Rugby Club.

The event, being held at the club’s Crossbow home will be held on the morning of 6 October, with games kicking off at 10.30.

600 kids aged between 7 and 12 will take part, with Frampton putting out 7 teams themselves.

Prospective new players are invited to come along as well to meet the club’s coaches.

Rangers required Frampton Rangers are looking for children to join them as the new season gets underway.

The club are particularly looking for under 9’s (school year 4) and an “experienced” under 12 player to join them. They are also hoping to recruit an under 9’s manager.

Pucklechurch by name, Winterbourne by nature

Local hockey team looks for new players as season looms ALTHOUGH Pucklechurch may be more well-known for its annual beer festival and Her Majesty’s ‘hotel’ it has supported an enthusiastic ladies’ hockey team since 1974, when Dyrham & Hinton club (founded in 1967) changed their name to reflect that they were playing in the village.

In the absence of an artificial

pitch in Pucklechurch itself, the team calls the Winterbourne International Academy home.

Many of the players come from the Winterbourne and Frampton area, and the club is always welcome new recruits to looking to come and join their “hockey family”.

Over the summer, they’ve lost a few players through retirement

and starting Uni, gained a few returning from Uni and maternity leave, and are always on the lookout for ladies returning to the game or wanting to give it a go for the first time.

The club currently fields one team in the West Clubs Women’s Hockey League Berkeley 2 Division, fill any gaps in the fixtures calendar with friendly games against local sides, and keep things ticking over throughout the summer months by entering a side in the Keynsham Summer League.

Training has just started for the winter season again on Monday nights at WIA, and preseason friendlies have just given way to league fixtures.

After a promising Summer League, things are looking up for 2013/14. At the end of the 2011/12 Season, the team were promoted to League 1 as part of a league re-structure, and found the step-up quite an eye-opener.\ Despite putting in some good team performances, and holding their own against some tough

opposition, they finished bottom of the table and have returned to League 2 for the coming season.

With new captain Zoe Hill, and vice captains Lisa Whitehead and Laura DavidgeLumber at the helm, 8 wins, 2 ties, and only 2 losses in Summer League, things bode well for the new campaign.

The team were buoyed heading into the new season with a 2-1 away victory against Swindon Ladies 2’s. Two wellworked team goals, both finished by forward Abby Northam, saw us come from behind in the second half to steal a win against solid opposition.

AN Athletics Club is searching for more coaches as more young people look to follow in the footsteps of Jessica Ennis and Mo Farah’s.

In the wake of the London Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Yate & District Athletics Club has seen a large increase in membership and now is at a point where it will have to start turning new members away as it doesn’t have enough introductory level coaches.

The club is one of the most successful clubs in the South Gloucestershire area and has a reputation for helping to develop national level athletes.

Yvette Westwood is one example of this. She joined the club when she was 11 and has developed with the help of the coaches at the club to win two silver medals at the recent under15’s Midland Championships.

Launched in 2011, the indoor league comprises 8-per-side, 12 overs-per-team matches which realistically replicate the outdoor game inside a sports hall.

The format rewards tight bowling and straight hitting, whilst sharpening a player’s fielding and running between the wickets.

The B.S.I.C.N now boasts 50 participating teams across a variety of venues in the region and games take place on midweek evenings.

Local cricketers no longer need fear the winter break and the absence of leather on willow.

Players from Frampton Cotterell, Winterbourne and Coalpit Heath C.C.’s are once again looking forward to taking part in the increasingly popular Bristol & Somerset Indoor Cricket Network.

The 2013 Spring season saw Winterbourne top their respective league only to be pipped by The Fram in the play-offs.

Frampton then progressed to the grand final of the competition where they were beaten by a strong Bristol Asians side.
