By ‘eck lad, Gromit’s coming to Winterbourne THE daring duo have been to a few exotic places in their time, including the moon. It would seem that the next destination for Gromit, if not Wallace, is Winterbourne.

The village will be the destination for one of the Gromit statues that are being prepared as part of Gromit Unleashed 2 the latest Grand Appeal for the Bristol Children’s Hospital.

Wallace, Gromit and arch villain Feathers McGraw will all feature on the trail which is backed by creators Aardman Animation, but it’s Gromit who will feature here.

A NEW headteacher for Winterbourne Academy has been appointed to lead the school from the autumn.

Jason Beardmore will take up the post at the start of the 2018-19 academic year in September.

The academy has had an interim principal, Peter Smart, since January 2017 when he was seconded from the Castle School in Thornbury to provide stability during a difficult time.

But as reported in last month’s Frome Valley Voice, Mr Smart has decided to return to Thornbury for the start of the next school year so the position of permanent headteacher at Winterbourne was advertised.

The academy was transferred to the locally-based Olympus Academy Trust earlier this year and its chief executive, Dave Baker, said there had been a “rigorous” appointment process for a new headteacher over three days.

He said: “Jason has been headteacher of secondary schools in Somerset and Devon so he will bring significant experience with him.

“There was representation from students, staff, parents, governors and trustees in the appointment process and I am grateful for their support.”

When Olympus took over the previously named Winterbourne International Academy (WIA), the education watchdog Ofsted regarded WIA as closed, meaning inspectors won’t now return to give an assessment of the newly named school for three years.

WIA had been in special measures since March 2017 - one of a number of difficulties faced by the school, including financial problems which have now been tackled.

Rabbits and guinea pigs from Littlest Rescue stole the show at the event to raise funds for Floral Friends.

All the money raised will be used to maintain the planting around the village – including the wildflower areas, the planters and hanging baskets, the Sensory Garden and the newly established Triangle Memorial Garden.

n NEWS EXPERIMENTAL road closures were due to come into effect in Moorend as Frome Valley Voice went to press to stop drivers using several roads as a rat-run.

But similar planned closures in Kendleshire were not put in place after an outcry from local residents and those running businesses.

South Gloucestershire Council said requests from residents had led to its decision to keep restrictions that were put in place around Moorend while the Bromley Heath Viaduct works were carried out.

The experimental closures that affect Bromley Heath Road north of the ring road, Bury Hill and Cuckoo Lane will now continue for 18 months before being assessed to see if they should become permanent.

The council will examine whether the roads become safer and traffic levels fall as a result of the closures.

redundant stretches of road.

Local councillor Claire Young said the proposal for Coalsack Lane and Ruffet Road would have turned the cluster of houses at the Badminton Road end of Ruffet Road into a cul-de-sac, with the householders’ only route out being straight on to

Badminton Road.

She organised a site meeting with highways officials, residents and golf club representatives and the council agreed to put the scheme on hold to allow for consultation.

Councillor Young said highways officials believed the closures would improve safety at the notorious A432 Kendleshire crossroads.

But she said: “Whether they agreed with the closure or not, people were unhappy about how this has been done.”

She said residents felt if there was to be any road closure, it should be the short section between the Coalsack Lane/ The Hollows junction and Westerleigh Road, which they said would stop rat running, while still allowing all parts of Henfield and Kendleshire to remain connected.

Village primary school praised in inspection

DECISIVE action has been taken at Iron Acton Church of England Primary School to tackle absence, with teaching also improving considerably.

Education inspection service Ofsted said the concerted efforts of “well-respected” headteacher Mike Riches during his two years in the post had raised teaching standards and built a strong team of staff, subject leaders and governors.

Inspector Catherine Beeks said pupils enjoyed school and were keen to achieve well, having positive attitudes to learning.

Staff were motivated and proud to be part of the school, while governors were skilled and had a clear understanding of the school’s main priorities.

The visit was the first short inspection carried out at the village primary since it was judged to be good in January 2014 and it maintained its rating after the visit by Ms Beeks.

She said: “Effective teaching

Big lottery grant for medieval barn could see major work start in 2019 THE final stage of a major Heritage Lottery Fund grant has been awarded to Winterbourne’s medieval barn, which should allow restoration of the historic building to begin next year.

With the allocation of £936,600 from the fund, it means the start of a £1.76 million project is closer and the future of the barn as a community building will be secured.

South Gloucestershire Council, which acquired the grade two* listed barn after it fell into disrepair in the late 20th century, has been working with the Winterbourne Medieval Barn Trust to develop the project that is aimed at conserving not only the barn but also its adjacent buildings and making them available for community use.

The trust looks after the barn and runs a programme of public events and activities at the

building, which dates from 1342.

It said it had achieved much in 15 years but there was a long way yet to go and it still had a final £50,000 or so to raise before the work could start.

It hopes the latest cash injection will encourage individuals and businesses to make a donation to help reach the target.

Trust chairwoman Sue Parsons said the grant would go a long way to enabling it to realise the full potential of the 14th century building and make it a true community asset.

She said: “Work is now continuing to raise the remaining money needed to ensure the project is fully funded.”

The scheme will involve restoration and refurbishment that will create a heritage education centre to demonstrate the history of the barn and its

architecture, as well as give information about the local area.

There will be new rentable workshops for creating traditional crafts and more space made available for public and commercial hire, the income from which will enable the barn to operate on a sustainable basis.

Drainage and accessibility will also be tackled and eventually many more events will be offered throughout the year, from heritage and craft-themed

activities to guided tours, musical and theatrical performances and a new programme for schools.

Activities will continue while the building work is taking place so visitors can continue to learn about the barn’s history and stay in touch with the project’s progress.

Jazz to launch new summer season at Winterbourne Barn A NEW season of summer events starts at Winterbourne Barn with an evening of jazz music.

Members of the University of the West of England (UWE) Big Band and singers return to the venue after their sell-out performance last year.

Anyone who wants to go along on Saturday, May 26, is urged to book in advance as it is expected to be just as popular and tickets may not be available on the night.

They can be bought online from Ticketsource or from the local Daisy's Coffee Shop.

Organisers said locally-sourced food and drink would be on sale from 6.30pm.

The event will be followed on Sunday, June 10, by a medieval fair that will feature displays of daily life in a 14th century encampment, courtesy of living history group The Company of Chivalry.

Throughout the day there will be a programme of talks, demonstrations, re-enactments of medieval life and military combat, falconry and medieval music.

A host of children's activities will also keep youngsters occupied and there will be a range of food and drink on sale.

Meanwhile, bookings are being taken for a basket weaving workshop on Saturday, June 23, which will provide an introduction to beginners and help those returning to the craft. Numbers are limited and those interested should phone 01454 778436.

n NEWS THE long-awaited Metrobus service from Emersons Green to the centre of Bristol is set to launch this month.

As revealed by the Voice in March, the m3 route will be the first in the £230 million rapid transport system for the city.

It is predicted to cut the journey time to Broadmead from 40 minutes to 29.

Operator First is offering free rides between Emersons Green and the Centre for the first 11 days after services start on Tuesday May 29.

The m3 will start at Emersons Green centre and travel along the Avon Ring Road, stopping at Lyde Green, Bristol & Bath Science Park, Emerald Park Industrial Estate, by the Willy Wicket pub and near the Hambrook traffic lights, before crossing the M32.

It will then stop at UWE, leaving the ring road to travel through Stoke Park and Begbrook before joining the M32 on the new bus-only junction and heading to Cabot Circus, Broadmead and the Centre.

Travel will be free on the m3 between the launch and Saturday June 9, to give people a chance to try out the service. After that, fares will cost between £1.50 and £2.50 per journey - but tickets must be bought in advance.

People can use existing First mTickets and paper variants, concessionary passes and smart cards. Tickets can also be bought at the iPoint machines - which are due to be installed at all Metrobus stops - by using a bank card, or at a Payzone shop using cash.

Buses will run every 20 minutes from 6am until 7pm, then every half an hour until 9pm on Mondays to Saturdays during the summer.

A more comprehensive winter timetable is due to be introduced by the operator in September.

Some other bus routes are changing as a result of the introduction - and because the A4174 viaduct has reopened - so check your timetables before you travel.

Metrobus is ready to run

Although Metrobus recently unveiled a grey, black and red double-decker in Bristol, it says the m3 route buses will be green.

They will have USB charging points at every seat and free wifi. First has spent more than £1.5 million on the m3 route vehicles, which use lower-emission Euro VI technology.

Councillor Colin Hunt, lead member for planning, transport and strategic environment at South Gloucestershire Council, said: “This is good news for everyone who uses the roads – a reliable bus service, direct to the city centre, avoiding congestion hot spots, will encourage people out of their cars, reducing congestion further and helping to improve our air quality. As a regular bus user, I’m looking forward to faster journeys avoiding the congestion hot spots.”

Councillor Mhairi Threlfall, Bristol City Council’s cabinet member for transport and connectivity, said: “Metrobus has already provided many benefits, from an enhanced city centre to new walking and cycling infrastructure. And, crucially, it will provide a fast, reliable, direct route from the south of the City to the north, with the first route running from the centre to UWE

The other two main Metrobus routes are the m1, which will link Hengrove Park in South Bristol to Cribbs Causeway, via Bedminster and the city centre, while the m2 will link the Long Ashton park and ride to the city centre and Temple Meads.

Both are behind schedule, as is the m3 link to Cribbs Causeway.

First will operate the m3 and m2, with Bristol Community Transport, HCT Group, operating the m1.

Budding archers invited to have a go A LOCAL archery club is holding a series of taster days to get more people involved in the sport.

Cleve Archers are holding a series of sessions throughout the summer at their shooting range on the outskirts of Winterbourne.

For a donation of £2.50, would-be Robin Hoods will be introduced to the club and the basics of modern-day archery by the club’s qualified coaches. The sessions last 2 hours and take place on the second Tuesday of each month and are open to adults as well as children aged 7 or above.

The next taster session is on Tuesday 8 May at the club’s shooting range at “Up Yonder”, Bury Hill, Moorend, BS16 1SS. Future Taster Sessions will take place on 12 June, 10 July, 14 August and 11 September.

Cleve Archers has been in existence for over 50 years and has recently embarked on an ambitious project to develop their own permanent shooting range.

The new field is currently being levelled and the club hopes to be able to move to its new home in around two years’ time. In addition to its taster sessions, the club also offers 5-week beginner courses. More details can be found on the club’s website.

Gromit unleashed in Winterbourne THE unmistakable canine features of Gromit will soon be seen in Winterbourne as the latest fundraising push for the Bristol Children’s Hospital gets underway.

Gromit Unleashed 2 is set to take Bristol by storm this summer, with Nick Park's Academy Award winning character Gromit returning to the area alongside his owner Wallace as well as arch villain Feathers McGraw.

Andrew Maunder has more personal reasons for wanting to support the charity. His wife Penelope died from cancer two years ago, and his two teenage sons, Sam and Tom asked him to get involved in the appeal.

The family used to walk through the Children’s Hospital between the BRI and the oncology department.

Andrew said: “The two boys wanted to donate because they saw the Children’s Hospital quite frequently because it’s next to

Ring road viaduct re-opens AFTER almost a year of delays, diversions and disruption, the Avon Ring Road is set to fully reopen at Bromley Heath.

The contraflow system introduced on the A4174 while work to repair the Bromley Heath Viaduct was carried out was set to be removed during the last weekend of April.

But some of the roads which have been shut during the roadworks could now stay closed - a move which has brought protests from motorists and some residents.

The ring road was due to close in both directions between the Wick Wick roundabout and the Hambrook traffic lights for the contraflow to be removed, with diversions signposted and published online.

The road was set to close at 8pm on Friday, April 27, reopening at 6am on Monday April 30, when the repaired southern viaduct will reopen to traffic for the first time since July last year.

Once the westbound viaduct is reopened the 2+ lane and bus lane on the A4174 were due to be reinstated and the traffic lights at Hambrook returned to their settings from before the work began.

South Gloucestershire Council says the ring road closure is needed on order to remove the contraflow system safely.

Council cabinet member for transport Colin Hunt said: “We’re pleased that this major

engineering project is coming to an end and that the viaduct has been made fit for the future and now features a greatly improved shared footpath for cyclists and pedestrians.

“To safely remove the contraflow we need to fully close the ring road over the weekend of 27 April and we apologise for any inconvenience caused during this closure.

“Whilst this section of the A4174 ring road is closed to traffic, we will also be taking the opportunity to carry out some additional maintenance work in the area, including work to the northern viaduct, drainage works, and resurfacing.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank residents and businesses for their patience and cooperation throughout this essential maintenance and improvement work.”

Temporary traffic lights at the junction of the A46 and B4465 at Tormarton, near junction 18 of the M4, were being removed over the weekend of April 21-22, despite calls from some residents for them to be made permanent.

In a message on its dedicated Bromley Heath viaduct works Facebook page, the council said: “The temporary lights at Tormarton were only intended to help ease the pressure of traffic during the viaduct works and the equipment used is not suitable to be made a permanent fixture. We are aware that these lights have been welcomed locally and the council is looking at a permanent

The viaduct carrying the westbound carriageway of the A4174 across the river Frome closed so that vital structural work could be carried out. As well as the structural work the viaduct has been resurfaced, new railings have been installed and the shared bike and footpath upgraded, with safety barriers to

divide pedestrians and cyclists from road traffic.

The closure has led to longer-than-usual delays on Bromley Heath Road and on the approaches to the contraflow on the ring road itself. Diversions have affected traffic through neighbouring areas, including Frenchay and Winterbourne.

Choristers to sing Playing fund appeal gets donation out for charity at two spring concerts SONGS from the shows will feature in two fund raising performances by the Alveston Singers.

The programme has been drawn up to highlight the work of Arthur Sullivan, Irving Berlin, Henry Mancini, Cole Porter, Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Kurt Weil.

It will also include A Little Jazz Mass by Bob Chilcott, who has been described as one of the finest choral composers at work in Britain today.

The choristers will be led by conductor James Davies and accompanied by Sue PhillipsonMasters at the concerts in Thornbury’s Cossham Hall on Saturday, May 12, and in Alveston Methodist Church on Tuesday, May 15. Both start at 7.30pm.

Admission is free but retiring collections will be made for Cancer Research UK and Children’s Hospice South West.

Literary festival to showcase the art of drinking in a good novel IT can be argued that the perfect book needs to be read whilst holding a glass of something special in the other hand. Now people are to get a chance to investigate the role of drinking in literature at a festival event.

Organisers of the Cotswold Edge Literary Festival have organised an evening of books and beverages as part of the week long event in June.

The owner of the Bristol Wine School, Tristan Darby is going to be on hand to explain why, from sherry in Shakespeare to fine wines in modern classics, drinks have always had a place in literature.

People attending the event on June 21 at the Hamptons Deli in Chipping Sodbury High Street will be able to taste the wines and other drinks that Tristan highlights.

From mining to art former pit among venues for annual art trail WILLOW and chainsaw sculptures will be featured at a new venue in this year’s Severn Vale Art Trail.

Andy O’Neill, well known in South Gloucestershire for turning fallen trees into artworks, seating and play features, is among six exhibitors to have displays at the Oldwood Pits site in Tanhouse Lane, Rangeworthy.

He will be joined by Jenny Humphris, Tanya Bartlett, Audrey Forbes and John Kemp, who all work with willow, as well as painter Tara Stein.

More than 50 other artists have also enlisted for the increasingly popular trail, which runs from May 4-13.

It is part of Thornbury Arts Festival - running after this year’s main festival closes - and allows people to see a variety of art forms at a series of studio and exhibition venues in Thornbury and a number of other towns and villages.

More than half of the locations are in Thornbury but visitors can also enjoy displays in places from Olveston and Alveston to Charfield, North Nibley and Berkeley.

There will be ten group exhibition venues open while the trail is running, together with many individual artists’ studios.

The variety of artistic skills on show will also include jewellery making and pottery to pen and ink geometric drawings, painting and photography.

Court tells owner to complete work A MAN has been ordered to pay more than £2,000 and told to complete work on an empty property in Winterbourne.

Keith Bannerman, 61, of Blackhorse Road in Downend, pleaded guilty to failing to comply with a Community Protection Notice (CPN) under the anti-social behaviour crime and policing act 2014.

He was prosecuted by South Gloucestershire Council for failing to comply with the notice, connected to a property in Sandstone Rise.

A Remedial Order was issued by the court, stating that Bannerman must complete the work, as scheduled in the CPN, by 28 May 2018. Any breach would be considered under contempt of court. He was also handed a conditional discharge for 12 months.

The prosecution at Bristol Magistrates' Court related to an unfinished new build house (where work had started by 1996). The property had been abandoned and left empty since before 2012, with prominent and unsightly scaffolding left in place, plus overgrown untidy gardens, that were causing detriment to the local community.

A CPN was served on Mr Bannerman, requiring him to complete the external works, tidy the land and remove the scaffolding by 20 September 2017. None of the work, aimed to improve the external appearance, was ever started and the condition is still deteriorating.

The notice also provided for ongoing maintenance of the property and the land, to prevent further recurrences.

A SAFE containing a gold coin, a small amount of cash, personal papers and bank and loyalty cards has been stolen in a distraction burglary at a pensioner's home in Winterbourne.

The 75-year-old man answered the door to a man who claimed to be dealing with a burst water pipe and asked to come in to make checks.

While the householder was distracted, a second man is believed to have entered the house unseen and stolen the safe.

The man who called at the door was described as white, aged about 30, of ‘tubby’ build, clean shaven and wearing a grey woollen hat and a high-vis jacket.

Police are keen to identify the man pictured, who was in the area at the time.

The burglary happened

between 8pm and 8.15pm on Tuesday 20 March.

Tockington garden opens for weekend OWNERS of a garden in Tockington will welcome the public for the first time during a weekend in May as part of the National Garden Scheme.

Stoneleigh Down was redesigned in 2014 and densely planted with a wide variety of trees, shrubs and bulbs for yearround interest.

Visitors to the garden on Saturday and Sunday, May 26 and 27, will also see sub-tropical, wildlife and oriental ponds in the two-thirds of an acre of grounds.

The National Garden Scheme involves the opening of hundreds of gardens of all types and sizes, from those at grand

homes to others on modern housing estates, to raise money for charity.

In 2017, a record £3 million was donated to a range of organisations such as Macmillan Cancer Support, Hospice UK and the National Autistic Society as a result of the garden visits and it is hoped to collect even more this year.

Stoneleigh Down will be open from 1-5pm, with parking provided in the village.

Admission is £4 but children will be allowed in free. It will also be open later in the year on September 1 and 2.

n LETTERS Stop feeding the foxes I am getting increasingly cross with the people who are putting out plates and dishes of food "for the Foxes". We should not be feeding them, They are quite used to feeding themselves. This just increases the rat population.

I walk my dog in Winterbourne every day and now I have to watch him so carefully, as he suffers with pancreatitis. It costs me a lot of my pension to feed him properly, so I would just like to say to people, use your food waste bins, that is what they are for. Please stop throwing out all this waste on our green areas.

Without your help, we would be unable to help anyone in the community who needs assistance. Not only did the rabbit appear again this year, but he brought along his Easter Egg. The Parent Club, Bristol Brunel and Branch Club, Bradley Stoke Lions have come together to share a social Pudding Night.

What started out as an American Dinner, deteriorated (or maybe transcended) to become a Pudding Night as the ladies in the club thought that starters and mains merely got in the way of the main event i.e. puddings!

n AROUND THE W.I Winterbourne Down WI Our WI members were all pleased to see each other at our April meeting, the one in March having been cancelled due to the snow.

Everyone was very saddened to hear of the passing of Hazel Weeks, one of our long serving members and there was a minutes silence for her.

Dawn, our President had assembled a beautiful Easter basket as a raffle prize which was won by our Treasurer, Jill Hemmings.

Our Speaker was Phoebe Hunter Meilveen, who started a company with Isobella Williams Ellis called PICO. They were very interested in setting up a Company to produce ethnically made underwear.

They went to Southern India to source the softest organic cotton and found a small Fairtrade factory to make underwear, mainly pants, vests, crop tops and pyjamas.

Phoebe told us about the problems associated with farming in India.

Our next meeting on 3rd May will be on the resolutions. On 7th June, Margaret Geiss will be coming to talk to us about Hats and Tales.

One 25 provides advice and support to the city’s sex workers, seeking to get them off the streets for

good. The talk was very thought-provoking and insightful.

We have a great summer ahead of us to look forward to – there is a Beetle Drive (games night with drinks and nibbles) at Crossbow House. Then on the 22nd May we meet for national WI resolutions discussions and a quiz night at St.Peters Hall. In June we have our summer meal out to look forward to – a Spanish night at The Globe, with authentic Spanish food and plenty of Sangria.

We’ll also be baking again for the WI Cake stand at the Frampton Festival in July – members all contribute, either by cooking up delicious cakes and savouries and/or working on the stand to sell our produce. We’re always very proud to be a part of the festival as it means so much to the village.

Other talks coming up later this year include “How to wear a Sari” (26th June), luxury chocolate making, and the history of the police force, so there is plenty more variety in the 2018 programme, to look forward to.

Visitors and new members are welcome to our monthly meetings at St Peter’s Hall on School Road at 7.45pm, on the 4th Tuesday of the month. There is a charge of £2.50 for the evening and any new members can also join by paying a membership fee.

n NEWS Students put through interview paces PUPILS at Brimsham Green School in Yate were tested on interview techniques during an event involving local business representatives.

Mock interviews were run for the year 11 students to help them when they eventually go through the process for real.

They each prepared a CV and letter of application, which were sent to the employers ahead of the interview, and were able to research the business several days beforehand once they knew who they would be meeting.

The pupils had previously covered areas such as interview techniques and appropriate outfits during their personal, social and health education lessons After the interviews were completed, students received written feedback on their performance.

World’s best head for Badminton STARS of the eventing world will be at the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials as they bid to win the sport’s most prestigious competition.

Andrew Nicholson, who finally won the international last year after a remarkable recovery from a serious neck injury that could have paralysed him 21 months earlier, returns with Nereo to defend their title.

However, the Wiltshire-based New Zealander has withdrawn his second ride, Jet Set, from the competition, which will see some 80 horse and rider partnerships take on the three phases of dressage, cross-country and showjumping from May 3-6.

The South Gloucestershire park will also host the Mitsubishi Cup for grassroots riders on Wednesday, May 2, ahead of the feature contest.

Nicholson will face tough competition from many of the best event riders during the challenge - not least from Germany’s Michael Jung, the current Olympic champion, and his superstar horse La Biosthetique Sam. Sam, who has carried Jung to world and European glory, as well as two consecutive Olympic titles, is due to be retired later this season so it will be his last run at Badminton.

The home side will be looking for victory

from the likes of past Badminton champions Oliver Townend and Pippa Funnell, as well as other team GB riders such as Gemma Tattersall and South Gloucestershire’s Harry Meade.

Meanwhile, British team stalwart Kristina Cook is racing to recover from a dislocated shoulder in time to compete, while the withdrawal of Jet Set means William Fox-Pitt has come off the waiting list to earn his place in the line-up.

Other major contenders include Kiwis Jonelle and Tim Price and four-time Badminton winner Mark Todd.

In his second year as cross-country course designer, Eric Winter has created another big and challenging track where the best horses and riders will take the most direct routes but with longer options for the less experienced.

He said: “It’s important that we keep cross-country at the heart of the sport. I want to get everyone round, while allowing the best horses to prosper. I want riders to come back and say ‘That was exciting’.”

Feature fences on the four-mile course include those at the quarry, Huntsman’s Close, the lake, Vicarage Vee and the recently introduced Hildon Water Pond.

Plan for 43 flats for Yate pub site unveiled A NEW scheme for 43 flats to be built on the site of a former Yate pub has been drawn up, just as a previous housing proposal was rejected by a planning inspector.

The latest plan is in outline only and seeks permission for the flats on the Station Road plot where the Railway Hotel used to stand.

The controversial demolition of the pub went ahead despite protests from local people and the collecting of a large number of names on a petition.

Opponents said the pub was a locally listed building and a landmark in the town for nearly 200 years.

But consent was given for the building to be knocked down and a scheme to build up to ten houses on the site was submitted by the Railway Building Company.

However, the applicant asked a planning inspector to determine the application when

South Gloucestershire Council failed to do so within time.

That appeal was recently rejected by an inspector, who acknowledged there would be a benefit from the provision of extra homes at a time when there was a shortfall in the five year housing land supply in South Gloucestershire.

He also said future residents of the properties would contribute to and support the local economy.

But he also said: “The harm to the character and appearance of the area would significantly and demonstrably outweigh these benefits.”

The latest plan for the site has been submitted under the name of Dixon Design.

A statement to the council said: “In making the planning application, it is our submission that the application proposes

a high quality, sustainable development that is in line with the policy provisions of the adopted plan for South Gloucestershire Council and will provide significant benefits which would substantially outweigh any minor adverse impact of the proposals.”

The document said the land formed a brownfield site which was “in a sustainable location with excellent access to transport links and local facilities as well as many employment opportunities close by.”

It also said: “Although Station Road is a busy road, the proposed apartments would not result in a significant increase in vehicle movements and traffic that would have any noticeable or detrimental impact.”

A number of objections to the proposal have already been sent in by local people.

Demand for coffee and cinema leads to new event at Armadillo centre AFTERNOON teas and a free film screening have been introduced at the Armadillo youth cafe in Yate - for the over-50s.

The weekly event runs on Thursdays from 1pm and was introduced after the popularity of coffee mornings and movies, which have been offered also on Thursdays for the past five years for the same age group.

Carene Whiting-Hays, venues operations officer for Yate Town Council, which runs the youth cafe, said: “We decided it was time to respond to the demand and launch an additional afternoon event.”

The same film is shown at both sessions but the afternoon screening includes subtitles to help those with hearing problems.

Wacky racers bring in cash for homelessness charity SCHOOL pupils in Yate set roads experts a Lego car design challenge to help raise money for charity.

Business mentors from Highways England are supporting Brimsham Green School students as part of a programme to turn the youngsters’ fundraising ideas into a reality.

At the same time, it develops the pupils’ confidence, teamwork and resilience.

The students tasked the Highways England team with building something creative out of Lego in just four minutes at a fundraising event.

Charlotte Collinson, one of the mentors, said: “We were really impressed with their ideas for fundraising - the Lego challenge was particularly popular with our design and engineering colleagues and we loved the wacky results.”

With a cake sale and table football challenge also part of the fund raising, more than £400 was raised for the homelessness charity Caring in Bristol.

The pupils also had to make a presentation on their charitable efforts to a group of Highways England staff.

In May, the project will culminate in a boardroom challenge where students will present their achievements to a group of local business leaders.

If you have unwanted warmth, then look for a toning shampoo, for example ultra-blue or violet.

For shine add a few drops of oil, warmed in the hands and put through damp hair Not only will this protect your hair, it will also help it dry quicker - less time blow drying is good for the hair and gives a few more minutes back to yourself.

How about dry shampoo? It definitely gives us extra sleep time. It’s also a life saver when you don’t want to be washing your hair all the time. Hot water on colour hair just sees the colour going down the plug hole. Another tip would be to use warm water to wash hair rather than hot.

Remember coloured hair should be treated like cashmere and washed sparingly.

A hair mask will help too, but if you have no time for that just get it on and leave for 5 minutes and wash off – this would be better than nothing.

If you are buying a box dye and are unsure, always go for the lighter shade – it will be much easier to live with if the colour’s a mistake.

When it’s time to cover the grey, try a root concealer which gives truly great coverage. Remember it will wash out when you next wash your hair, but it’s brilliant for temporary cover until your next appointment.

And finally wear a hat in the sun, this will really help keep colour in.

26 new homes Customer satisfaction at Merlin reaches two-year high completed in villages

“We are very happy with our home and very happy with the respect of your team.”

Overall satisfaction with the services a local housing association provides to its customers has reached a two-year high.

Latest results from South Gloucestershire-based Merlin have revealed that its customer satisfaction in 2017-18 has risen to 86.4%, up from 83.6% 12 months ago. Customer satisfaction with the quality of their home and their neighbourhoods has also risen to 84.8% and 87.4% respectively.

And the housing association has seen a large increase in the numbers of customers happy with the repairs carried out to their home, with satisfaction rising from 77.4% a year ago to 82.4%.

One customer who responded to the latest survey said: “I don't contact Merlin very often, but when I do, it's usually for repairs which are carried out promptly. Overall, I would say that I am very pleased with Merlin as a landlord.”

Another one said: “We are very happy with our home and very happy with the respect of your team.

Thank you.”

While another customer said: “Merlin has always given good service. The service for older people is reassuring, and it’s good to have someone there to take your requests.”

Over the past year Merlin has introduced a new repairs policy to improve the number of repairs that are completed right first time. It has also invested millions of pounds in improving homes by fitting new kitchens, bathrooms, windows and doors and making them more energy efficient.

Although the vast majority of customers are either very satisfied or fairly satisfied with their home, their neighbourhood and the services they receive from Merlin, the housing association aims to do even better over the next 12 months. Merlin aims to increase overall satisfaction to 88% and satisfaction with people’s neighbourhoods to 90% by March 2019. And Merlin believes its partnership with fellow housing association Bromford will help increase customer satisfaction by rolling out Bromford’s innovative neighbourhood coaching approach to Merlin customers.

Local housing association Merlin is on course to complete all of its new affordable homes in Coalpit Heath and Iron Acton by early autumn.

Twenty-six homes have been completed so far, and work is well underway at the remaining 46 homes in the two villages. The homes are being built to replace 44 old properties whose condition had deteriorated since they were built more than 60 years ago.

Most of the 72 new homes being built will be rented out, but five are being sold through Merlin’s shared ownership scheme. The properties went on sale last month and four of them were sold within a week.

The past year has been Merlin’s most successful to date for housebuilding, with the number of new homes built rising to 186. Over the next 12 months the housing association aims to do even more, building more than 300 homes in the area. And by going into partnership with fellow housing association Bromford, it aims to build 14,000 homes over the next 10 years.

Big crowds expected at annual Then Aimee will start Yate Rocks festival her bedtime stories THOUSANDS of people are set to enjoy Yate’s popular community music festival when the two-day event returns to Kingsgate Park in June.

Yate Rocks Festival is now in its 13th year, having proved to be a hit with people of all ages.

Large crowds go along to hear local bands, visit sideshows, support community and craft stalls and enjoy a variety of food and drink.

Local dance groups will also be involved and local fire fighters will have a fire engine at the park for people to look over.

Entertainment includes giant inflatables for children, who can

also have a go on trampolines and join in football games.

Go-karts which were introduced last year will return and families can also watch Punch and Judy shows.

Day one of the festival takes place from noon-8pm on Saturday, June 23.

The following day’s events will start with a Praise in the Park from 10.30am-noon, with local churches providing an outdoor service.

A singing competition for local choirs will be the highlight of an afternoon Picnic in the Park from 1.30pm.

AUTHOR Aimee Williams will launch her first collection of bedtime stories at an event in Yate library.

A short story and poetry writer, Aimee, 35, has always lived in the Yate and Chipping Sodbury area.

She started composing poetry at a young age and having established her writing, has now produced her first book for children, using her experience as a mother of three.

Called The Fairy, the Dreamer and a Rabbit named Woof!, it features three bedtime stories and is published by Rowanvale.

It will be launched in the library on Saturday, May 19, from 10amnoon during a family fun morning, which will include book readings, face painting and colouring activities for youngsters.

Copies of the book will be given away as part of a series of competitions, as well as being on sale.

Vintage venture BLACK Sheep Harmony A Cappella Chorus have joined forces with charity shops to cash in on the retro trend.They are holding a Vintage and Preloved Fair on Saturday 2nd June at Cadbury Heath Hall.

They believe it is the first event of its type in the country as they bring charities together under one roof. St Peter’s Hospice, British Heart Foundation and the PDSA are all on board to sell some of their more select items in the ambience of a Vintage Fair.

New trees for Henfield playing fields

THE Newman Playing Field’s next to Bitterwell Lake has had a group of new trees planted in an effort to increase the local biodiversity.

The native trees and bushes have also been planted with an eye to the future, to replace the ash trees in the hedge if they are hit by ash die-back disease.

The funding for the trees has come from the payments received from the solar farm at Mays Hill which the parish council can use for environmental improvements.

The parish council say it welcomes any suggestions by parishioners for environmental improvements.

n NEWS FURTHER work will be needed in the next year to pursue the rebuilding of Thornbury’s Armstrong Hall to create “a wonderful legacy” for the town.

Public support for a new hall on the current site in Chapel Street led the Armstrong Hall Trust - whose sole managing trustee at present is Thornbury Town Council - to support the proposal.

Community consultation on three options saw 80 per cent (285) of those responding back a rebuild.

A further 18 per cent (62) supported refurbishment of the hall but only four people thought it should be relocated to an extended Turnberries community centre in Bath Road.

Five people either didn’t know, didn’t support any of the three options or came up with another idea.

The hall is in desperate need of an upgrade if it is to remain

A rebuild has been estimated at £4.9 million, while refurbishment would cost £2.85 million.

Although the option for Turnberries would involve building a large extension, there were concerns about insufficient space being available for performances.

Relocation would also involve selling the Armstrong Hall site for redevelopment to help fund the work at Turnberries, which is owned by South Gloucestershire Council.

The council said it would offer a 50 year lease in return for £4 million of investment into the

site, with further negotiations about managing and operating the facility to take place.

Councillor Clive Parkinson, chairman of the Armstrong Hall redevelopment group, said: “On balance, the Armstrong Hall Trust believes that at this time the new build option is the preferred route to take forward.

This is also the clear preferred option of the Thornbury public in their response to the consultations.

“The consultations have thrown up many questions and suggestions and the trust will consider all of these as it takes the project forward.

“The trust also wants to encourage individuals who have

experience or expertise in such a project to join the working group and help the town develop an exciting and appropriate successor to the existing Armstrong Hall that has served the town so well.”

Further work will now be done on design, facilities, governance and financing before final decisions are made and work commissioned.

Thornbury mayor Helen Harrison said the council had made a decision knowing it had the public’s support.

She said: “We hope the public will get involved in this exciting project for Thornbury and create a wonderful legacy for the town.”

n THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

Malcolm Strange Rector of the Fromeside

In the 80s, when training for the Priesthood, I undertook an InnerCity placement at the Elephant and Castle in London. It gave a clear insight of what being a priest was like ministering amongst deprived and vulnerable communities.

The central focus of the six-week experience was to undertake a secular placement with an agency working for the needs of others.

I was designated to work at the

Greenwich Council for Racial Equality which was challenging the high level of racism, prejudice and discrimination which was so prevalent in many communities at that time.

My work included investigating incidents of racial abuse against individuals. One such investigation was to work with a group of religious studies teachers who were being threatened by the National Front for introducing and teaching an extensive multifaith curriculum, long before this was encouraged by central government. The work these teachers was doing was ground breaking and it was a privilege to witness the fruits of their labours in building up acceptance and understanding in a multi ethnic school community.

In recent years I had concluded that the levels of racism and discrimination, so widespread in the 80’s, were on the whole behind us. However, events of recent weeks have been a timely reminder that the evils of racism, hatred and xenophobia are always only just below the surface.

Anti-Semitism in political parties, the Brexit Issue of the border in Ireland and its potential to derail the peace process and finally a day designated and set aside by mindless individuals trying to incite people to ‘punish a Muslim’!

The response to the later however, offered hope as ‘hug a Muslim’ and ‘love a Muslim’ events sprang up through out the country, people of all ethnicities and faiths facing up in a positive way to those who seek to undermine and divide communities. As a teacher of religious studies, alongside being a priest, I have always aspired to encourage high levels of inclusivity, acceptance and understanding amongst the pupils I have taught, building upon the fundamental Christian principal to ‘love your neighbour’. It was so refreshing on April 3 to see this quality of ‘love of neighbour’ so beautifully lived out in the events organised by many across the country.

On April 4 the world marked the 60th anniversary of the death of Martin Luther King who understood more than anyone the evil of racism and prejudice, so

often provoked and encouraged by the desire for power and control. Yet in fighting it he evoked the central concepts of Christ’s teachings about love, respect and understanding of others, including those who persecute. His call to peaceful protest and the actions of many in the civil rights movement of the time clearly reflected the teachings of Jesus, as they challenged the evils and abuses they faced in the most loving of ways and brought about change.

King realised that the spirit of ‘love and understanding’ when truly and fully embraced by all is so powerful and can transform any situation. As he said “What is needed is a realisation that power without love is reckless and abusive and that love without power is sentimental and anaemic. Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice. Justice at its best is love correcting everything that stands against love.” I hope and pray that all in our communities will continue to ensure these key human qualities prevail for the good of all.

A guide to pre-owned cars with Richard Cooke

Second hand Style A look at everyday cars on the cusp of becoming modern classics Tesla Model X, 2017 - current: Gullwing Zeitgeist I PROMISED you last year that I’d test a Tesla, and here it is: the striking, premium-priced Model X SUV. If you have upwards of 80 large to spend, need six or seven seats, four wheel drive and insist on being the centre of attention wherever you go powered purely by electricity, this is the only show in town. I also believe that whatever happens to Tesla the company, the Model X will become a classic of sorts; name a gullwing-doored car that hasn’t.

The problem you’ll have is that there are very few examples of the Model X on the used market, and I suspect that a large part of the

appeal for the early-adopter Tesla owner is having a new Model X on the drive. So does it make any sense at all as a used purchase?

In a word: No. But hang on, because I’m biased – my time with a series of AFVs last year was not a universally happy one and I readily acknowledge that electric cars really are the future.

The Model X is a decent piece of design, seating 6 in comfort (and seven at a squeeze) across three rows. The weight of two tons is disguised very well by the most incredibly powerful electric motor I’ve ever come across – driving it is a memorable experience. This is the sort of acceleration that only motorcyclists and racing drivers will be on nodding terms with – 60mph comes up in 3 seconds flat!

As a passenger it doesn’t work so well, because at full power it feels like you’re on an out-of-control

rollercoaster, which is less than pleasant. And believe me, all Tesla drivers will be very keen to show you their Model X’s party trick, so sick bags at the ready.

It is very easy to be dazzled by the interior design, with its large touchscreen interface and broadly competent voice recognition functions. However that would be to forget that this is still an American interpretation of a luxury car, and that means it is not at all luxury by European standards. It’s not even that well made by anyone’s standards. Bits of trim were already loose on my 9 month old test model, and whilst the materials used are fine to the touch, they are most certainly not what you would expect from a car that brand new can easily retail at £100k+. The last truly premium American car was probably the 1956 Mk II Lincoln Continental, and

unfortunately the Model X is miles away from what Maserati or Range Rover offer at this price point.

To reliability, and this is where the Tesla both impresses and frustrates. This example has not been particularly reliable – the doors have caused problems and there have been a series of minor electrical faults. Tesla send fixes automatically via the internet, much like a computer, and when they work it’s great because you sometimes don’t even notice. But when they don’t, you have to take the car to a Tesla Service Centre. Be thankful that you live near Bristol, because our nearest service centre is in Westbury-on-Trym. If you live in Cornwall or Wales you’re nearest centre is….also Westbury-on-Trym.

Scotland has one centre. One! Not being able to take my car to a local garage, any local garage, is a colossal negative for me.

But none of this matters, because the Model X doesn’t really have a competitor yet – if you want one then quite simply nothing else will do. It is the motoring equivalent of the iPhone – people simply must have it. The brand is still so hugely appealing to the gadget hungry wealthy buyer, and I have a suspicion that in twenty years you’ll dine out on stories of when you bought one of the first Model X gullwing Teslas. For everyone else, we’ll listen, envy your bravery and hope you pick up the tab.

Exciting plans for South Gloucestershire health service Luke Hall MP writes for Yate & Sodbury Voice

AM delighted that our area has finally seen some progress on the redevelopment of our local health services. South

Gloucestershire is set to see some exciting plans to upgrade local

health facilities at Frenchay and Thornbury. The news comes as our local South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group releases its report on the plans for enhanced health facilities for our region.

The proposals will see the redevelopment of the currently vacant site at Frenchay Hospital.

Although it seemed that the community hospital plans were at risk at first, following pressure on North Bristol NHS Trust, we have been able to secure assurances for a health centre at Frenchay. The area will now see the introduction of a Centre of Excellence for Rehabilitative Care, which will incorporate NHS rehabilitation community beds in a single integrated facility.

As your local MP I have worked closely on the campaign to improve health provision for our area, I am therefore delighted that we have been able to ensure local residents will be able to benefit from a health facility at Frenchay.

The new centre for rehabilitation would also help relieve some pressure from Southmead Hospital, providing further, much-needed community health premises.

The proposals for a Centre of Excellence at Frenchay are set to complement the plans for redevelopment of the Thornbury health centre site. The town’s new Integrated Primary & Community Care Hub will include greater primary and GP services, a mental health unit, and a specialist

‘frailty hub’ to cater to the elderly community. Social care beds will also be added to help reduce hospital admissions in wider South Gloucestershire.

These joint plans for Frenchay and Thornbury will help unite our local health services and improve social care provision throughout the region. I am delighted that with the support of the community, we have been able to secure these projects for our area, strengthening health services for local residents across South Gloucestershire. As your MP I will continue to work with the community to ensure these projects are delivered as soon as possible for local residents.

Award for support group

A GROUP which speaks for young people in care and those leaving the care system has been recognised with an award.

The British Youth Council award was made to the Experienced Panel in Care - EPIC which consists of 15 to 25-year-olds in South Gloucestershire who have experience of being in care themselves.

As well as representing the views of young people like them, they also campaign on issues that affect them, such as council tax.

As a result of EPIC’s work, South Gloucestershire Council decided to support care leavers up to the age of 21 by paying their council tax bills for the next year.

EPIC received the Inspiring Project Award, which recognises the efforts made by projects to engage young people and give them a voice.

A certificate was presented to the group by Jon Hunt, the council’s Cabinet member for children and young people, at a Youth On Board awards event.

He said: “We understand that it can be difficult for young people leaving care and are very pleased to be able to offer this support, which should help relieve some financial pressure as care leavers move into independence.”

Frampton vets have title in sight FRAMPTON Athletic FC veterans have continued to dominate Division 5 of the Bristol Casuals League. Since winning the opening 4 games of the season by the end of February, the team were given March off (due to fixture issues), which had left them with 6 games to play in little over 2 months.

April saw the veterans play 4 games over 4 weeks. This started with a tough game at home to Filton High Vets, who were challenging in the top half of the table. The game was a very even affair for the first 60 minutes, with the score at 1-1, with Steve Bisp scoring Frampton’s goal.

However, the last 30 minutes of the game saw Frampton step their game up and goals from Marc Hughes and Dan Cook saw them take all 3 points and maintain their 100% record.

The following game was an entirely different affair.

Swift AFC were the visitors to Beesmoor Road and were a very experienced team with some

very good footballers. There was a vast difference in average ages across both teams, with Frampton averaging between 35-40 and Swift AFC likely to have been between 45-50 years.

This made for a good game for the first half, with Frampton only just getting their noses in front through a goal from Dan Cook. But in the second half, youth and fitness took over the game and Frampton stepped up their efforts and scored a further 6 goals in the second half, with goals from Mike Beake, Ian Sterling, Martyn Tozer, Nic Hooper, Ian Walters and a second of the game for Dan Cook.

Frampton visited the newly refurbished Fry’s Club in Keynsham to face Fairfield Allstars. It was a poor first half performance from Frampton, going 1-0 down within the first 10 minutes. However, on the stroke of half time, Mike Beake scored an equaliser to get Frampton back on level terms.

Frampton showed a different attitude in the second half and started to play some decent football. Adam Goodwin, Steve Bisp, Ian Walters and Martyn Tozer all got on the scoresheet, but a defensive lapse at 5-1 up led to the Allstars getting their second of the game.

After making it 7 wins out of 7, Frampton headed away to bottom of the table, Shipham AFC. Shipham had played 7, won 1 and lost 6 before the game.

The Shipham players had a great attitude and are a credit to the Bristol Casuals League. The final (and somewhat irrelevant) score line of 8-0 was achieved

by Frampton thanks to a first half hat trick from Carl Tomlin,

a brace from Steve Bisp and further goals from Mike Beake, Martyn Tozer and a fine finish from James Shepherd.

With just 2 games left to play, Frampton are being made to wait to complete their season, with the only available dates for their opposition being 3rd and 17th June. With just 1 point required to guarantee promotion to Division 4, Frampton have their own fate in their hands. A win and a draw would be enough to take top spot.

Rugby youngsters experience the entente cordiale YOUNG rugby players at Frampton Cotterell got their taste of a long running cross-channel friendship as they hosted French rugby team Parisis RFC from Franconville, a suburb just north of Paris.

Seventy junior players and coaches made their way across the channel to Frampton as this unique rugby relationship entered it 41st year after starting in 1977.

Parisis won the under 14s and under 12s games but Frampton won the big game of the day, running in six tries in an excellent 38-7 victory in front of a large sun drenched crowd .

The next anglo-French meeting will be the Frampton Veteran’s trip to France to play the Vieux Loups vets in November.

Pucklechurch celebrate promotion with club merger PUCKLECHURCH ladies hockey club have returned to Division 1 at the first time of asking, after topping Division 2 by ten points.

They won 3 games, drew 3 and lost 2.

Now the club has announced it is to amalgamate with Badminton. Laura Stone, from Pucklechurch said: “Both teams, although currently fielding a full squad each week, have decided that to broaden the opportunities to gain more recruits and further

Winterbourne Tennis Club serve up thrilling match at Bishop Sutton

Rachel Cockcroft and her son Ewan won the Winterbourne Tennis Club’s family tournament for the second year running. They get to play in a special final in Birmingham in June.

Winterbourne players Patrick and Sarah after their mixed doubles battle WINTERBOURNE Tennis Club’s Mixed 2nd Team travelled down to the beautiful countryside by Chew Valley Lake to play Bishops Sutton Tennis Club.

The Men’s Pair, Patrick Grant and Tom Ward, battled hard against the experienced Bishops Sutton pair to take the first set 6-4, but the home team fought back to take the second set and scraped home for a win, after a very close third set Championship Tie breaker, 11 points to 9.

The very experienced Bishop Sutton pairs then won the Ladies doubles and the second mixed doubles in straight sets, so Winterbourne had one last chance to take points in the final Mixed Doubles Match, which proved to be a real thriller.

The Winterbourne team of Sarah Bruce and Patric Grant lost the first set 6-1 but they dug deep and found some form in the second set which went to 6-6 and then a tie break.

Sarah played very consistent return shots and played well with great concentration in many long rallies, and Patrick added some true brilliance, with outstanding volleying and serving, eventually winning the tie-break to 7-6 to level the match.

The third set went to a championship tiebreak which Winterbourne eventually won 1210. Patrick and Sarah had been on court for over 2 ¾ hours.

The overall match score was 8-2 to Bishops Sutton, but the crucial 2 points for Winterbourne Tennis Club were vital for the Winterbourne team who are in the bottom half of Division 4d, and looking to move up the League.

Fabulous Frenchay 10k NEARLY seven hundred local runners were at the starting line for the 38th annual Frenchay 10k run.

The event is one of the country’s oldest 10K races. First held in 1980, the race was conceived with the joint purpose of staging a well-organised run for serious runners and beginners alike whilst still raising money for local charities.

This year the beneficiary was Freewheelers Emergency Voluntary Service - a registered charity that provides a free out-of-hours

motorcycle courier service to hospitals in the South West of England.

The course starts on the UWE Glenside Campus at the top of Blackberry Hill in Fishponds. Runners then race through Oldbury Court before heading on to Gill Avenue towards Frenchay common before returning to the UWE grounds for the finish.

Local runner Lynn Bridgman thoroughly enjoyed the race. She said: “I entered in order to keep my friend Claire company.

We both got a course personal best!” When

asked why she keeps on returning to the race year upon year, Lynn replied: “The Frenchay 10k is such an enjoyable, local, community based event which allows friends and family to support you throughout. The course is great - but I’m not a fan of the inclines!’

Lynn, 62, came twenty ninth in her age category and ran the course three minutes faster than last year. Lynn was proud of the commemorative mug that every competitor gets on completion of the 10k, as she accidentally smashed the one from last year!

Yate gets summer athletics season going at a sprint THE Yate & District AC’s Sprints and Hurdles Open meeting has become a valued opening fixture for sprinters from across the region, with athletes coming from as far afield as Swansea and Neath in one direction and Taunton in the other.

The event is valued because at the start of the season everyone wants to achieve good times and establish themselves for the more serious competitions ahead. Its popularity has led to organiser Graham Howell restricting the entry to two hundred athletes.

Cold conditions, with occasional drizzly showers however were never going to help the athletes improve on their winter times, but with seventeen heats of 100m and sixteen of 200m, all were guaranteed a competitive race against comparable athletes.

As with all open meetings, race placings matter less than times. Age groups and male and female run in mixed heats, leading to some tight finishes and difficult judgements for the track judges.

Clocking 7.97 secs in the 60m; 12.8 secs in the 100m, and 13.00 secs in the 80m hurdles, he demonstrated the value of regular indoor competitions.

Phoebe Havard in the under-13 girls, continued the improvement she showed over the winter. She finished in 8.88 secs in the 60m; 14.2 secs in the 100m, and 30.2 secs in the 200m: a very promising start to the summer season.

Cricket Club mark clubhouse refurbishment FRAMPTON Cotterell Cricket Club are holding a special event to celebrate the work to upgrade their clubhouse.

In the under17 men’s division, it was good to see an emerging group of Yate sprinters. Max Elliott, Isaac Cory, Nathaniel Mitchell and James Lynch clearly push each other strongly. Max and Isaac both ran under twelve seconds in the 100m, while Max and Nathaniel both dipped under

25 seconds in the 200m.

In the 400m, Josh Snook showed good form, finishing in 51.3 secs.

The Friday before the open event saw the British trials for the Invictus Games, which this year is being held in Sydney, Australia.

Four officials from Yate & District AC were called in to help with the games. Pat and Tony Jefferies and Matt Viner operated as field officials, while Stuart Nunn was one of the starters.

A highlight of the morning was the visit of Prince Harry, who is the driving force for this event, and his soon to be wife Meghan Markle.
