Families urged to keep supporting academies as potential cash crisis looms PARENTS of children at Winterbourne and Yate international academies have been urged to keep faith with the schools as efforts are made to prevent a potential £1 million deficit.

The Ridings’ Federation of Academies is investigating ways of making savings in order to avoid the shortfall.

But there are fears it could lead to some parents considering looking at other schools for their children.

The National Union of Teachers (NUT) has described the projected deficit as serious but hopes parents will continue to give their support to the schools and staff.

Nigel Varley, joint secretary of the NUT in South Gloucestershire, said: “It’s a very serious situation. Our intention is to preserve jobs and working conditions for our members but we are also anxious to preserve community links with the schools.” More on page 2

Ridings’ Federation acts over potential £1 million deficit as parents are urged to continue supporting academies UNION leaders have called on parents to maintain support for Winterbourne and Yate international academies amid concerns over a potential cash crisis at the federation that runs the schools.

A projected £1 million shortfall for the Ridings’ Federation of Academies has been described by the National Union of Teachers as “a serious situation”.

It has led to fears of staff cuts and increased class sizes within the federation, which also runs the sixth form in Winterbourne, as well as Woodlands primary phase and nursery in Yate.

But Claire Emery, chairwoman of the board of trustees, said the federation was investigating cost saving measures to reduce the financial deficit while still being committed to supporting students and staff.

Mrs Emery told a recent regular meeting with parents at WIA that the trustees have two options on the table, either financially remodelling the current set up over the next five years including getting the commercial arm to perform better, or to change the academy status. This would mean an outside group taking over the running of the schools.

The Federation is currently running a £300,000 deficit, and £1 million was an initial projected figure for the end of August 2017. The current budget for the schools is £14m.

Mrs Emery had revealed the problem in a letter to staff and invited ideas for possible savings.

But it comes as the federation continues to put troubled times behind it. In 2015, both Yate and Winterbourne academies were assessed as requiring improvement; teachers at Winterbourne went on

The latest letter follows correspondence with the former Education Secretary Nicky Morgan on the issue.

The new letter comes after an announcement that the formula’s implementation is set to be delayed for further consultation.

Mr Hall said: “I’m encouraged

that the Government has reaffirmed its commitment to a new formula but I will continue to press the case at the top on behalf of parents, pupils and schools here in South Gloucestershire to ensure we get our fair share in something as important as education”.

strike, claiming a breakdown in relations with academy leadership, and the then chief executive principal, Beverley Martin, left after only about seven months.

However, progress is being made under her replacement, Adam Williams, and the federation said there had been “some stunning results” at Winterbourne.

Mr Williams is currently on sick leave and federation spokesman Rob Phillips said said trustees were working with senior leaders to keep things running effectively in his absence.

It’s also been revealed that there was a disappointing response to the search for a new principle at WIA to replace Richard Haupt, who has stayed on past his intended retirement in the summer. The federation is now looking to ‘re-model’ WIA leadership, which in practise

might mean Mr Williams being both the federation Chief Executive Principal and principle of WIA. Mrs Emery said: “The federation is dealing with a financial deficit and the trustees are looking at various ways to reduce this.

“The subsequent feedback from staff members will be considered and responded to in the correct forum but I want to reassure all staff, pupils and parents of pupils attending The Ridings’ academies that the federation is committed to supporting its staff and ensuring that all of its pupils receive excellent learning.

“Trustees are also working closely with the regional schools commissioner for the South West and Education Funding Agency colleagues to ensure there is no disruption to learning for students.”

Housing plan for countryside site criticised by Iron Acton and Yate councils PARISH leaders are opposing plans to build seven detached houses in open countryside north of Yate.

Developers want to put the homes on land to the rear of Holmelea House in Tanhouse Lane, which lies between Yate and Rangeworthy.

But Yate and Iron Acton councillors have opposed the scheme submitted by Juniper Homes.

Yate Town Council said it would introduce housing in open countryside and set a “terrible precedent” by opening up the entire area to Rangeworthy for development.

It also said there was poor access to highways services and public transport.

Iron Acton Parish Council said the site was outside the settlement boundary and had a lack of local amenities.

It said North Road Primary School was at least one-anda-half miles away along a busy road, while Brimsham Green School was even further away, bus services were infrequent and Tanhouse Lane was part of the Avon cycleway.

It also said the plan did not include affordable housing for local people.

Plans emerge for thousands more homes in Coalpit Heath Fears of character changing development - with Yate also earmarked THOUSANDS more homes could be built in South Gloucestershire - including 1,500 in Coalpit Heath and 2,600 in Yate and Chipping Sodbury - under plans for the next 20 years.

The figures - more than 9,000 - have already been criticised for potentially changing the character of areas within the district.

Claire Young, the Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Thornbury and Yate, said: "These plans will come as a huge shock to many local people.

“It's striking that the new homes we need are being concentrated in just a few communities to the north of Bristol. These places have already felt the pressure from large scale developments.

"Will these plans create places where people want to live, where they can access services like doctors, dentists and schools

and where they can easily get to the places they need to go?

“Will there be truly affordable homes for those who so desperately need them? Do people think the loss of the green belt, which is already very narrow, is a price worth paying for new roads?”

She also questioned if the draft proposals fitted in with a promise from Conservatives to protect the green belt.

Mrs Young said: "As a local resident myself, I know how strongly people feel about our communities. I want to make sure local people's voices are heard when our area faces such massive changes."

The housing figures are in a plan produced by councils in the former Avon area, including South Gloucestershire Council, and will be debated on October 7 by the West of England Planning, Housing and Communities board.

A consultation will then run from November 7 to December 19.

Other parts of South Gloucestershire set to expand are Thornbury, where hundreds of houses have already been built or given consent recently, with even more in the application

pipeline. The document now points to a further 600 being accommodated.

Up to 1,000 could be built in the village of Charfield, and a controversial new garden village at Buckover, near Thornbury, is already being proposed.

Future of libraries looks brighter thanks to new technology

NEW technology is set to be introduced into South Gloucestershire’s libraries to help them stay open.

But the costly mobile library is still due to be axed, although people in some rural areas served by it have offered to run mini community libraries.

South Gloucestershire Council has been looking at ways of saving money in the library service as part of an overall cost cutting target of £22 million by 2019-20 It initially was looking at libraries to save £650,000 but that has now been reduced to £500,000.

The future of the mobile library and Chipping Sodbury library were especially bleak, while other libraries feared reductions in opening hours, including in Winterbourne.

But the future of Chipping Sodbury looks more positive, with volunteers set to be involved in running the service, and a pilot scheme is being planned for new Open Plus technology that allows libraries to stay open even when unstaffed.

Using the Open Plus system, people can use their library cards to swipe themselves into libraries, giving them access to books, IT services and wi-fi printing.

Other parts of the country already use it and although South Gloucestershire wants to introduce the system widely, it plans to run its pilot first at Bradley Stoke.

If successful, it will then be at the heart of updated proposals for the library service throughout the district.

It will cost up to £400,000 to introduce Open Plus but it will give access to libraries for 11 hours a day, seven days a week.

The council said its library staff could then be used when most needed.

Councillor Heather Goddard, chairwoman of the council’s environment and community services committee, said: “While we have to make savings, we want to ensure that these facilities remain at the heart of our communities.

“Access to libraries out of staffed hours is not about replacing staff, it is about providing a service in addition to their expertise.

“This innovative new policy allows us to save half a million pounds a year on our operating costs while more than doubling the opening hours of libraries.”

The council will now consult for a further three months on its plans, with a final decision to be made in the new year.

Heritage Open Days rings bells with visitors to Winterbourne

VISITORS to Winterbourne Church and the medieval Barn enjoyed a feast of bellringing during the Heritage Open Days.

North Road gets new post office on site of Codrington Arms pub

NORTH Road Post Office will welcome back customers within a new shop behind the Codrington Arms pub this month.

It is due to open at 1pm on Monday, October 17, some 17 months after the area on the edge of Yate lost its former post office. As previously reported, the postmaster resigned and the premises could no longer be used for postal services from May 2015. It was a blow not only to people on that side of Yate but also those in Iron Acton.

SPEED limits on roads near Frampton Cotterell Primary School are the latest set to be cut.

South Gloucestershire Council resolved three years ago to ensure that, as far as practicable, roads surrounding all schools in the district should be covered by a 20mph limit.

A number of lower restrictions have already been introduced but consultation has to take place before limits can be changed.

The proposed scheme for Frampton Cotterell involves reducing 30mph limits to 20mph on 14 roads in the vicinity of the school in Rectory Road.

As well as improving safety for vulnerable road users, it is hoped the move will make walking and cycling to school a more attractive proposition.

Details of the roads affected are available on the council’s website under its consultations section. Anyone who wants to comment should do so by Thursday, October 6.

Change in parliamentary constituency for Frampton Cotterell in early proposals by boundary commission

FRAMPTON Cotterell could be moved into the Filton and Bradley Stoke parliamentary constituency under initial plans for changes to boundaries.

The alterations are being made in order to cut the number of constituencies and to try and get a broadly similar electorate in each one.

Apart from a couple of exceptions, they must have an electorate no smaller than 71,031 and no larger than 78,507.

The Boundary Commission for England said due to the small electorate of the existing Filton and Bradley Stoke constituency, where Jack Lopresti is the sitting MP, it proposed to expand it

to take in Frampton Cotterell.

Winterbourne is already in the constituency.

Areas such as Ladden Brook and Westerleigh would remain in the current Thornbury and Yate constituency, where the MP is Luke Hall.

However, the commission wants to see it grow to include some parts of southern Gloucestershire, including Wotton-under-Edge.

To reflect the change, it would be re-named Dursley, Thornbury and Yate.

Volunteers needed by South Gloucestershire charity to help older people claim vital benefits MORE volunteers are needed by Age UK South Gloucestershire to help make a difference to older people.

A team within the organisation carry out free benefits checks for the elderly, including those who struggle with application forms.

The team is made up of staff and three volunteers and last year it secured more than £660,000 of benefits for clients.

More than 30 of those who were helped lived in the Yate and Chipping Sodbury area.

Now Age UK hopes to recruit more volunteers who can give at least two hours a week to supporting others who need help applying for much needed benefits.

When good neighbours become good friends

A community scheme in Frampton Cotterell and Coalpit Heath is looking to remove loneliness from the area. Volunteers from ‘Good Neighbours’ are visiting the elderly and others who would welcome some company.

Richard Drew has been to see the scheme in action.

It’s a glorious sunny day when I visit Lotty Randles in Coalpit Heath. When I get to her smart home, there’s already laughter coming from inside. Her visitor is Ann Boaden, a volunteer from the Good Neighbour scheme.

Anne has been visiting Lotty for over three years now, and it’s clear they get on well.

Lotty is 90 now and although she still has hints of a native Hull accent, she’s lived the village for the last 16 years. She likes to write short stories and Ann says she is an amazing knitter. Her modest sitting room is shared with her pet budgie.

It’s clear that the weekly visit from Ann is a highlight for her; “I wouldn’t get out if it wasn’t for Ann. She takes me out, we go for coffee, she comes to see me every week and it’s something to look forward to”.

Lotty is a wheelchair user now, and feels the visits give her some freedom: “It’s enjoyable. You come back home and you think, ‘Yes, I’ve see the outside world’, because otherwise what are you looking at all the time? You sit here and get up at seven o’clock in the morning and look at the wall and look out the window, and if it’s raining you say ‘I can’t go out today”.

“What do you think I do all day long? I sit doing word search till my brain goes round and around, but it’s something to do”.

Lotty does have a son in the village who visits regularly, and another son in Wales who visits

every week to keep the pristine garden in order. However, Ann explains that still leaves a lot of hours on your own; “I’ve got a mum in Lincoln who has relatives there but days are long. You wake up at eight o’clock, and if my brothers and sisters can’t get around until they’ve finished work or at the weekend, then the days are long”.

The pair have become firm friends as a result of the Good Neighbours scheme and Ann says it’s not just Lotty that has benefited from it “I’ve been a nurse all my life and retired seven years ago. I liked to put back into the community and I think at the end of the day there are a lot of people who are sat in our community - even next door or not far away - that benefit from just seeing somebody”.

“I like interaction, I like the social side of it, I like to think that someone, somewhere has benefited by making a tiny bit of difference”.

Andrew Edgington is one of the organisers of the scheme.

the imagination of local people; “It’s gone brilliantly, I’m very very pleased. I didn’t think at the start we’d get more than 30 volunteers, but we’ve had about 60 expressions of interest and we’ve got 45-50 registered and active at the moment. It’s very affirming about what a nice village we live in.”

He’s hoping the scheme can be expanded to other parts of the community; those with disabilities or those with Alzheimer’s and their carers.

By the end of my visit, Lotty and Ann are enjoying the garden in the sunshine. Perhaps the best way to leave them is with a quote from each that sums up the nature of the Good Neighbours scheme.

Anne: “We stated out as good neighbours and now we are friends.”

Lotty: “I look forward to my days. If she could come everyday it would be better!”

Hambrook kids celebrate Roald Dahl’s 100th birthday PUPILS at Hambrook School have spent a week celebrating the centenary of author Roald Dahl’s birth.

Roald Dahl and the Imagination Seekers visited to ask children to help save some of his stories that had disappearing words.

The whole school dressed up as one of Roald Dahl’s characters for a day, made dream jars, Wonka bars as well as recreating Mr Twit’s beard.

Willy Wonka came to see the children at the end of the week to tell them some stories.

He even left them with some chocolate.

Students help marathon man Ben in epic challenge STUDENTS from WIA have helped a Bristol man in his efforts to run 401 marathons in 401 days.

Ben Smith, known as the ‘401 Marathon Man’ visited the academy to speak to students about his challenge and the two bullying charities he is supporting.

Ben began a world record attempt just over a year ago,

running the marathons in 309 different locations across the UK. The challenge was designed to raise awareness of the issues of bullying and generate £250,000 of donations for the charities Stonewall and Kidscape.

Community celebrates completion of new homes A MULTI-MILLION pound project to increase affordable homes in a South Gloucestershire village has been officially opened

by Thornbury and Yate MP Luke Hall.

Over the past year Merlin has knocked down 18 non-traditional properties and a rank of garages in Coalpit Heath and replaced them with 39 modern, affordable homes. Customers moved into their new homes last month and last week were invited to a party to officially open the £5.2m development.

After opening the new homes Mr Hall said: “I was delighted to be able to join residents in officially open their brand new homes in Coalpit Heath, which were made possible through the hard work of Merlin. Small developments such as these retain local people’s ability to remain their communities that otherwise they might not have been able to afford too, which is important for the strength of village life.”

South Gloucestershire Council’s Adults, Housing and

Public Health lead member Cllr Ben Stokes said: “I am delighted the new residents are settling in to this attractive development in Coalpit Heath.

The flagship scheme provides much-needed affordable homes in South Gloucestershire and is a good example of partnership working towards the same goal of building high-quality, energyefficient new affordable homes.”

The 39 new homes are part of 130 properties the housing association is aiming to develop this year. By 2019 Merlin’s goal is to be building 300 homes every year.

Merlin Development Manager Noreen Twomey said: “We’re delighted to have completed these stunning new homes, which will help tackle the housing shortage in the area.

These are the first affordable homes that have been built in the villages for many years, which helps local people who may have been priced out of finding a home of their own in the village.

“This is our biggest single development to date, but we’ve

The new homes are a mix of one and two bedroom flats, two and three bedroom homes and a two bedroom bungalow, specially designed for a wheelchair user.

Part of the funding for the homes came from the Homes and Communities Agency, which awarded Merlin £2.4m under its

Affordable Homes Programme.

With these homes now completed, Merlin is now planning to start work on further redevelopment of properties on several other sites in the village and in neighbouring Iron Acton. A total of 44 properties will be demolished and 72 new, affordable homes built in their place. Work is due to begin later this year.

Queues at Yate Riverside to see new store THE third and final major retailer at Yate Riverside has opened, with TK Maxx joining Next and Pets at Home at the complex.

Six-screen Cineworld is at the heart of Riverside, where there are also a number of restaurants creating an extension to the main Yate Shopping Centre.

The latest store in the TK Maxx clothing and homeware chain covers 22,000 sq ft and keen shoppers queued up to be first inside on opening day.

Andrew Lowrey, Yate Shopping Centre manager, said: “T K Maxx will be a tremendous boost to the centre, being a wellknown high street name, and will complement the existing shops.

“When we did our survey work back in 2008, local people were asking us to incorporate more fashion and now we have a diverse range of outlets suiting all ages, styles and budgets.

“The summer months have been very busy, with footfall showing an increase over last year as the centre now begins to

settle down after several years of building and development and a packed summer activity schedule.

Around the W.I.

Frampton Cotterell WIThe big event for us this summer was the wonderful Frampton Festival which we all felt was a big success, in spite of the sunshine being rather shy on the day. That said, it didn’t rain and the turnout was impressive, so we really can’t complain.

Our members did a great job in baking a wide range of cakes, scones and snacks for sale on the stall, and also in selling them – at the end of the day we were left with no stock remaining, thanks to everyone’s efforts.

Frampton WI take on Coalpit Heath WI

In August we take our traditional annual break from the monthly meeting, however members took part in a country walk in late August followed by afternoon tea at Poplars Farm Shop – this time the weather was on our side and so we were all able to enjoy the sunshine.

We also had a summer rounders match in September where we took on Coalpit Heath WI, although our congratulations must go to our opponents who (sadly for us), beat us fair and square!

Events coming up over the Autumn months include a talk on Coastal Marine Life towards the end of October.

December brings a number of social opportunities with a festive note, including carols, a Christmas Bingo night at Crossbow House, our book club Christmas meal and our contribution to the Christmas Tree display at St. Peters Church. A new events

The cake stall at the Frampton Festival programme for the New Year is currently being organised.

Visitors are welcome to our monthly meetings at St Peter’s Hall on School Road at 7.45pm, on the 4th Tuesday of the month. There is a charge of £2.50 for the evening and any new members can join by paying a membership fee.

Winterbourne Down WI In September we had a member of The Yeomen of the Guard, Shaun McCormack talk to us. The guard is the oldest British military corps and was formed in King Henry VIII’s reign.The name beefeater may come from when they were rationed to beef and beer when in active service. The red and gold uniform stems from this time and the guard purely accompany the sovereign on ceremonial occasions such as the annual royal maundy service, state opening of parliament and royal garden parties today. He brought his uniform and pictures of the seward and partisan to illustrate his talk.

Our next meeting is cupcake decorating on Thursday 6th October at 7:30pm at All Saints Church Hall in Winterbourne Down. Visitors are all welcome.

Bradley Stoke Lions AT our August meeting at the Hilton Hotel, Heather Lamb, an Interstatial Lung Nurse from Southmead Hospital gave us a talk. Heather and her colleagues not only look after patients with lung problems, on a daily basis, they also give of their own time to run a Support Group every three months in a church hall in Southmead. This is done on a voluntary basis with no financial support from NHS and the money required to fund the hall and provide tea and biscuits for their members is raised from raffles each meeting. Some of the nurses even cycled to Amsterdam and back to raise sponsorship money to cover these costs.

Bradley Stoke Lions President Robin decided to make this Lung Support Group one of his two annual charities this year and has promised Heather and her colleagues £300 to (hopefully) cover their

expenses for the year.

Our club is also supporting Noah, a young boy from Patchway who suffered a bleed on his brain whilst still in the womb and who now has multiple problems which inhibit him from supporting himself. His mother is trying to raise money to purchase an “Innowalk” machine to provide essential physical support and aid in physiotherapy. Further information at https://www. gofundme.com/qpvhpn. The family have already raised some of the funding required to buy this expensive piece of equipment and BS Lions have pledged £200 towards it.

We support the Julian Trust Homeless Shelter in Little Bishop Street throughout the year and have promised to give Caring at Christmas (C@C), which takes over from the Julian Trust over the Christmas period, £200 to buy fresh food

for their “guests”. Some of the Lions volunteered to help at C@C last year over the festive period and will volunteer again this year. Once you get involved, you find you want to continue because there is such a great atmosphere as all the guests are so pleased to be there. Ed Reed who runs C@C gave a talk to our Parent Club, Bristol Brunel at the September meeting, hoping to recruit more volunteers.

I don’t want to give away too much information -shsh, but I hear Santa will be coming to Bradley Stoke again this Christmas, watch this space.

New hospital for brain injured patients opens MORE than 200 people were shown around a new hospital for brain-injured patients at Frenchay before work started to move into the premises.

The Frenchay Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre (Frenchay BIRU) has a national reputation for excellence, providing specialist assessment and therapy.

But with only 29 beds, it needed a new unit that could allow it to expand its services and meet demand for its care and treatment, both locally and throughout the South West.

The new hospital is directly opposite the one it is replacing and has 52 beds.

The open days were held for local residents, medics, past patients and those who refer people to the hospital.

Autumn AUTUMN is now well on its way. Are you ready for the clocks going back the darker nights? It’s a good time to get winter ready, as we know there is absolutely no time in December.

Here are out seasonal snippets.

• Nail - The new season look with a darker twist on nails.

Try a deep ox-blood, dark red and get some glitter: don’t wait for Christmas a bit of sparkle can make you smile each day.

• Restore your skin – Our skin can look dull after the holidays; not just the sun, but the swimming and the variation in temperature.

Exfoliation is key, and you should try and rub away all that dead skin at least twice a week, then add a serum to really feed the skin. A good vitamin supplement would be vitamin C as it can help

reverse any damage and a key ingredient in any serum is hyaluronic acid as it helps draw water into the skin and holds it there.

• SPF – Remember that SPF is for life and not just for summer. Make sure you carry a sun screen all year round, or that it’s included in your moisturiser. We cannot protect ourselves enough from the elements.

• Relax – Take time out for yourself before Christmas

arrives. There is no doubt that an aromatherapy massage helps on 2 levels – your skin and your mood.

To truly feel relaxed, ask your therapist for a blend of geranium oil (5 drops) to balance hormones, rose (3 drops) for calming and Frankincense (2 drops) for anxiety - mixed with almond oil to soften the skin or use the same blend in your bath.

Crackdown by police and council on waste operators dropping rubbish onto Avon ring road POLICE and council officers are involved in operations to target waste operators and drivers that allow rubbish to litter roads.

Stop checks are being carried out on two major routes, including the A4174 ring road, in an effort to tackle a problem that costs South Gloucestershire Council tens of thousands of pounds a year.

It also causes major disruption to the road network when closures have to be imposed to clear the waste.

During stop checks, police carry out vehicle inspections while environmental crime enforcement officers give advice and investigate the potential prosecution of any driver and waste operator found to be in breach of the law.

Waste carriers are legally bound to take all reasonable steps to prevent waste escaping from their vehicles and all

registered operators in the district, and others known to travel through the area, were given advice and information on their responsibilities prior to the operation.

The council said it spent £50,000 a year on cleaning up litter and waste dropped from cars and lorries on the ring road alone.

As the road had to be closed to allow such operations, it caused severe disruption and inconvenience to drivers.

The council has successfully prosecuted companies under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 for failing to take reasonable steps to ensure waste is transported legally.

In 2011, construction and waste management firm Smiths of Gloucester was fined £5,000 and ordered to pay costs of £18,336 and a £15 victim surcharge.

Legion Mourn Former President

A TRIBUTE to Mr. Royston Fudge late President of Frampton Cotterell and Coalpit Heath Branch of the Royal British Legion, who has passed away on September 9th, 2016, aged 90 years.

Roy joined the Royal Navy in 1942 and served with distinction till the end in 1945 on HMS Beagle, HMS Formidable and HMS Hogue. He was in the Battle of the Atlantic escorting vessels carrying supplies to Russia for which he was awarded two medals from the Russian Government. He also received a medal from the people of the Soviet Union in gratitude for his duties.

He also served on one of the ships that liberated the Channel Islands for which he also received a medal.

He lived in Frampton Cotterrell for many years and joined the Frampton Cotterell and Coalpit heath Branch of the Royal British Legion, (RBL), where he remained for the rest of his life.

He also helped the elderly and the infirm, and took on the mantle of Branch Welfare Officer for many years, visiting those who were ill, and he always had a ready smile and a kind word wherever he visited.

He served on the Branch Committee and rose to become Branch President.

He will also always be remembered as one of the last of our branch members who served in the 1939 - 1945 conflict, and by the Officers and members of Frampton Cotterell and Coalpit Heath Branch of the Royal British Legion. Rest in Peace Roy. David Bell

Our Information and Advice Benefits team carry out free benefits checks for people in later life. We also support people who want to claim benefits but are struggling with the application forms. The team is made up of staff and three volunteers. Last year our three I&A Benefits volunteers secured over £660,000 of benefits for our clients, volunteers making a real difference.

We are in need of more volunteers to help us reach more people in later life who are in need. The role is rewarding, and by giving 2 hours a week you can support people living in your community who need help applying for much needed benefits. If you can give more time we would be delighted.

Last year we supported over 30 people living in the yate and Chipping Sodbury areas and we are experiencing similar demand this year.

Home-Start Recruiting HOME-START Bristol(HSB) is recruiting two Trustees to join its current eight-member Trustee Board team.

Our charity supports families living within the geographical boundaries of Bristol and South Gloucestershire, who have at least one child under 5 and who are experiencing problems affecting their wellbeing as a family. This support is provided by our trained volunteers (under the guidance of our professional co-ordinators) who visit a family each week, offering support, friendship and practical assistance.

We have a staff of 6 parttime employees and 78 (as at September 2016) volunteers.

One of our employees combines her administrative role with that of Early Intervention Worker, providing rapid and direct response to families in, or on the point of, crisis.

During 2015/16 we supported 134 families and expect to support at least that number in the next 12 months By becoming a Trustee of HSB you will be part of a team helping to make a lasting and positive impact on the development of children and the health and welfare of families.

Trustees are unpaid, but reasonable expenses can be claimed.

Board meetings are held monthly, usually on a Wednesday or Thursday morning at the Greenway Centre

MP’s latest jobs fair hailed a success as unemployment figures for women gives boost to constituency HUNDREDS of jobs and apprenticeships were on offer at the fourth jobs fair hosted by Thornbury and Yate MP Luke Hall.

Mr Hall pledged to host at least two such fairs every year to bring together local employers and job seekers.

Those looking for work were able to find out about full, part-time and flexible roles with employers that included Avon and Somerset Police, Asda and insurance firm Europa.

The fair took place as recent figures showed unemployment among women in the constituency was at its lowest level for a decade, while youth unemployment was also down more than 21 per cent in the last year alone.

Headaches

I

F you get headaches, you’re not alone. They affect most people at some point in time. Some headaches are occasional, some frequent, some are dull and throbbing, and some cause debilitating pain and nausea. What do you do when you suffer from a pounding headache? Do you grit your teeth and carry on? Lie down? Pop a pill and hope the pain goes away? There is a better alternative.

Research shows that spinal manipulation and mobilisation – two of the primary treatments provided by chiropractors – may be an effective treatment option for tension headaches and headaches that originate in the neck.

The majority of headaches are associated with muscle tension in the neck. Today, we engage in a more sedentary lifestyle than in the past, and more hours are spent in a fixed position or posture. This can increase joint irritation and muscle tension in the neck, upper back and scalp, causing your head to ache.

Try the following to prevent headaches: If you spend a large amount of time in one fixed position, such as in front of a screen, on a sewing machine, typing or reading, take a break and stretch. The stretches should take your head

and neck through a comfortable range of motion.

Low-impact exercise may help relieve the pain associated with primary headaches. However, if you are prone to dull, throbbing headaches, avoid heavy exercise. Engage in activities such as walking and low-impact aerobics.

Avoid teeth clenching. The upper teeth should never touch the lowers, except when swallowing. Teeth clenching results in stress at the temporomandibular joints (TMJ), the two joints that connect your jaw to your skull, leading to TMJ irritation and a form of tension headaches.

Drink water to help avoid dehydration.

Chiropractors are trained to perform chiropractic adjustments to improve spinal function and alleviate the stress on your system. They offer advice on posture, ergonomics, exercises and relaxation techniques. This advice could help to relieve the recurring joint irritation and tension in the muscles of the neck and upper back, and help your headaches!

I DON’T know if you, like me, love this time of the year. Beautiful sunny weather tinged with that hint of Autumn evidenced in the many stunning autumnal colours that are just beginning to replace the greens of summer.

One of my favourite occupations is finding a spare half hour to venture out with my plastic container to pick blackberries (which will be destined for a crumble with custard). I cannot resist eating a few as I pluck them from their thorny home. They are just one of many wonderful reminders of nature’s abundance at this time of the year.

Harvest time - when Christians come together to give thanks and celebrate all the good gifts that God has given to us, most beautifully symbolised in the harvest goods we offer and the amazing harvest loaf which together we share as we celebrate!

But I have to confess I am prone to often seeing my glass as half empty - only too quick to focus on what is not going well, on what I see as unfair in my life, lots of moans and groans if I am honest. This frame of mind, if any of you have experienced it, can be quite debilitating.

So I have decided, rather than make a new year’s resolution, to make a kind of harvest resolution.

I have borrowed this idea from my lovely

sister-in-law. I have purchased a pretty note book and placed it on my bedside table with a pen. Every night before I snuggle down to go to sleep I am taking a few moments to jot down the good things I have been blessed with that day - perhaps time spent with family, or a job well done at work, a conversation with a good friend or perhaps the food I have eaten that day. I am amazed at how much there is each day to be thankful for, my own personal harvest of God’s grace and abundance to me.

Not only does this help me to reflect so much more positively on each day but also if I am feeling a little fed up at any time I just read back through one of the days in my book and realise just how blessed I am.

God’s unconditional love and grace are open to all - cause indeed to celebrate this harvest time as we look around at the abundance of all that He has given each one of us.

I would recommend taking time to count your God given blessings - it really does lift the spirits and in the words of the hymn we can sing together ‘all good gifts around us are sent from heaven above then thank the Lord for all his love’.

Successful dementia service in line for award A PIONEERING service launched to speed up dementia diagnosis and early treatment in South Gloucestershire has already slashed waiting times.

In its first year, the GPprovided service has cut waiting times of up to nine months to less than six weeks.

Diagnosis rates have also risen from 38 per cent to 58 per cent over the same period.

The memory assessment service was developed by South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and is run by GP practices using a simple screening tool.

Its success has resulted in it being shortlisted for an award, as well as being adopted in other areas of the UK. The service has been shortlisted for the Health Service Journal awards in the category for innovation in mental health.

Isolation and loneliness tackled through newly launched service in Frome Valley A NEW service aimed at tackling social isolation and loneliness has been started in the Frome Valley as part of a South Gloucestershire-wide scheme.

Community Connectors is a three-year programme being run

by Curo, a not-for-profit housing and support organisation, which involves GP surgeries, the voluntary sector and local community groups.

Those referred to the project will be helped to re-connect with other people, local services and communities.

They will be encouraged to play a more active role in their locality, meet new people, learn new skills, possibly become a volunteer and even set up groups and activities that benefit their area.

Among those being targeted by the service are those who cannot be helped through medical treatments, people

who have experienced a life changing event that has affected their confidence and well-being and anyone at risk from, or already experiencing, isolation and loneliness but who are not eligible for statutory services.

The project has well-being workers in six clusters around South Gloucestershire, including in Frampton Cotterell, Coalpit Heath, Winterbourne and surrounding villages, where referrals will start to be taken in October.

Frampton World Dance.

Frampton Singalong meets on the first Thursday of the month at 2pm at Crossbow House, School Road, Frampton Cotterell, for one-and-a-half hours of singing, a cup of tea and cake. The next session is on October 6.

The dance group meets on the fourth Thursday of the month at 2pm in Zion Church, Upper Chapel Lane, Frampton Cotterell.

Gentle dances to live music are taught and are suitable for beginners of all ages, with no partner needed. The next twohour session will be on October 27.

Volunteers are needed to help run the groups, as well as circle dance teachers, singers and musicians.

NE of the biggest issues we face in South Gloucestershire is an outdated infrastructure network - strained and at points overwhelmed.

This is principally due to large scale developments, for example Emersons Green and Lyde Green, without the required investment in our roads, rail and public transport networks to balance increased volume of movement on the network.

Traffic congestion in the area, has seen a 30% increase in traffic in the last 15 years – significantly above the national average of 21%. As a great, but growing community, I want our area to reach every last bit of potential, and that means tackling our infrastructure problem. I recently delivered 11,000 surveys to houses in South Gloucestershire, asking people locally how they felt we could best improve our local transport network, infrastructure and services.

The response so far has been phenomenal with over 1000 responses returned from residents, and more coming in every day. There has been a strong consensus about the changes and investment we require for our area. 90% of respondents support the campaign for a new junction 18A onto the M4, and over 85 % of residents in Yate wanting to see the road to nowhere

finally completed after it was abandoned in 1974.

Changes and improvements to our public transport is also a priority; more frequent services to and from Southmead Hospital, a Yate Park and Ride and more frequent train services have been repeatedly raised. I have already started using the responses to raise these concerns and suggestions with the Council and private providers, demonstrating the strong demand for improved services in Yate and Coalpit Heath particularly.

I have been consistently raising these issues in parliament, calling a debate on building Junction 18A and raising funding for The Road to Nowhere directly with the Chancellor and Government Ministers. We have had some success, securing £500,000 to complete the full feasibility study into Junction 18A, submitting the bid to investigate completing the Road to Nowhere and re-opening discussions about the Yate Park and Ride.

We have to be forward thinking about what infrastructure is needed in South Gloucestershire, these combined projects have the potential to unlock significant economic and personal benefits to our community. Change won’t happen overnight, but I can assure Voice readers that I will be constantly fighting to get South Gloucestershire Moving.

Tough Start to the Season for Frampton Athletic FRAMPTON have endured a frustrating first month of the season, being narrowly edged out of games, despite often being the better team on the park.

Despite losing all 3 of their opening league fixtures, they have played some very good football in each game and certainly in the first two games against Oldland Abbotonians Reserves and St Pancras, it was individual mistakes in both games that cost the team from coming away with at least a point. First team manager, Nick Talbot, says that he’s happy with the way his team are playing, but the individual mistakes need to stop sooner rather than later, putting it down to early season rustiness.

On the back of the 3 league defeats, Frampton were given a break from the league in the shape of a league cup fixture, which pitted them up against AEK Boco Reserves from the division above. On paper and on form, this should’ve been an easy win for AEK Boco, but Frampton went into the game with a clear strategy to try and counter attack their opposition and frustrate them by getting as many men behind the ball as possible.

This relied heavily on Frampton’s main striker, Matt Johnson, to hold the ball up well for 90 minutes; a job that Johnson delivered extremely well and saw him pick up the Man of the Match award.

The game itself was a 2-2 draw, sending the game straight to a penalty shootout. Despite the lack of practice in taking penalties, Matt Britton, Matt Johnson, Mike Beake and Martin Tozer all despatched their kicks.

AEK Boco scored their first two, before Nick Talbot saved their third and watched on as their fourth came back off the crossbar to give Frampton a well-deserved and unexpected victory.

The following week saw Frampton in another cup match, this time away from home and up on the Bristol Downs in the GFA Senior Amateur Cup against Sneyd Park. Not the best place to go and that showed.

On a very blustery day, on a very uneven pitch and very long grass, the conditions were not ideally suited to Frampton’s quick passing game. However,

they battled well against the opposition until the hour mark, when they fell a goal behind.

Then came the capitulation.

They found themselves four behind with no reply, all in the space of 10 minutes. A disappointing result, which somewhat flattered Sneyd Park, but Frampton can have little complaints given the attitude shown after going a goal behind with a third of the game left to play.

Frampton did manage to pick themselves up and travelled to fellow league strugglers, DRG Frenchay, who had also failed to pick up a single point this season. Frampton saw this as a good opportunity to kick start their season and they did just that.

Within minutes of the kick off Frampton were ahead. They continued to dominate and found themselves 4-0 up at half time. The second half started much the same, with Frampton making it 5-0 straight from the second half kick off. Soon it was 7-0 and Frampton were cruising.

A touch of overconfidence was in evidence as they conceded a goal in the 80th minute, due partly to a goalkeeping error.

But Frampton managed to keep it tight at the back after that goal and got their 8th goal of the game in the last few minutes. A huge win and one that has been on the cards for some time given the way the team have been playing.

Lack of Players Affecting Reserve Team Fixtures Frampton Athletic Reserves have had a stop-start beginning of their season. Having played their first 2 fixtures; losing 8-1 to title favourites AEK Boco ‘A’ and narrowly losing 3-2 to Seymour United Reserves; they have since struggled to get a full team available to fulfil their fixtures. Games against Soundwell Victoria, Hanham Athletic Reserves and Nicholas Wanderers have all been postponed whilst Frampton get their house in order. Reasons such as holidays, injuries, wedding and even half the team running the Bristol Half Marathon have all contributed to an average of 21 players being unavailable in the second half of

The league have given the club until the 8th October to get players back, fit and playing again, before the club has to consider withdrawing their Reserve side from the league, which will be the last resort from the clubs perspective and not a decision that they will take likely.

Frampton’s Reserve side did manage to get a team out for the GFA Junior Cup match against Wessex Wanderers from the Suburban league. But, despite a 20 yard wonder strike from full back, Robin Cater, and going 2-0 up, a lack of games and fitness took its toll and they lost 4-2 by the final whistle.

Iron Acton aim for promotion in memory of Adam

DEFENDER Jamie Angell has been appointed first team manager at Iron Acton FC following the death of Adam Taylor. Jamie joined the club as a teenager from Chipping Sodbury FC and played for Adam in the 1st team.

The team have won 3 games and lost 1, including a cup victory at St Andrews. and are aiming to win promotion this season as tribute to Adam.

The club’s other 3 sides have started the season with a mixed set of results and are on the lookout for new players especially goalkeepers!

Coalpit Heath start season at a sprint

Coalpit Heath’s U-9 team at the Memorial Stadium SEVERAL of Coalpit Heath FC’s teams have made promising starts to the season with our most senior team the U16’s rising to the heady heights of second in Divison 1. Included in this great start to the season have been superb wins against Ashton Boys, Avon Athletic and last season’s champions Downend Saints.

Against Downend Saints the boys were 3-1 victors with goals from Adam Perks, Toby Kinnerly and James Cooke.

The Under-12 Colts have a 100% record so far with three league wins against TC Juniors, Hanham Abbots and Stoke Lane.

The boys most recent win was in the League Plate competition where the boys beat Rockleaze Rangers Colts 3-1 in an entertaining match. The victory and place in the second round was secured with goals from Sam Clarke, Louis Bray and Ciaran

The Orange of Coalpit Heath welcome the blue and white quarters onto the pitch Seward who scored his fifth goal of the season.

Elsewhere in the club the Under 9’s squad were hosted

by Bristol Rovers Community Team at the Rovers recent home match versus Port Vale. The day included a coaching session in

the morning, lunch, a tour of the stadium and a meet and greet with the match day squad. The day culminated in the Coalpit Heath Squad being the flag bearers to greet the teams onto the pitch which ended with the Rovers winning 2-1.

Tough September for Frampton rugby FRAMPTON Cotterell Rugby Club will be hoping for a better October, after loosing their first two league games of the season.

Frampton went down away to Gordon League 33-21 in a match that they really should have won.

Frampton travelled to Gordon League with a positive mindset after a strong preseason.

They chose to go play uphill in the first half. Gordon league capitalised on this with 24 unanswered points in the first half. Frampton were punished by their own mistakes such as offsides and not releasing.

However when they started using their practiced and well drilled game plan they did start to put Gordon League on the back foot. With the change over in the second half Frampton came back into the game, with two quick tries from Brandon Bull and Matt Lawrence, who somehow pulled over four men from the 5m line to score,as well as another from Tom Curnock on the outside.

Lawrence also slotted penalties, but also managed to miss 12 points with the boot.

Nevertheless Frampton did not preform as a team and were not up to the physicality of Gordon League, Huccelcote was the next challenge, in a game Frampton should have won if not for a poor first half performance and conceding silly penalties.

Frampton lost to 29-14 in a game that saw them only score one try through George Frost and three penalties from Matt Lawrence.

Frampton youngsters loose out in Cup tie FRAMPTON Rugby Club’s U-13’s welcomed Stow-on-the-Wold to Hoopers in a cup tie, Rob Pearce reports.

The game saw another debutant for Frampton with Khaled making his bow..

A very even start saw both teams trying to find the breakthrough with Frampton giving as good as they got.

The home side had good field position with some great tackling

by Charlie and Roy, and with Ben and Rudy on the wing Frampton were always a threat.

Rather against the run of play the visitors went ahead when they cut the line to score through the centre. Shortly after, a ripped ball saw the lead extended and from the kick off, the ball fell loose and was picked up by Stow to cross the line again.

Despite some great attacking play by Jack and Gabe the

visitors scored two further tries before half time, for a very flattering half time lead.

Frampton didn’t let their their heads drop and they got their reward when Rohan’s jinking run saw him pass to Jamie and he powered his way across the line for the try.

With great vocal support from the sidelines Frampton attacked again. Following a scrum, Matt hooked the ball back to Lewis and his pass down the line found Nik whose cross pitch run put him clear to score in the corner.

Soon after the exact same move had the same result when Nik again outpaced the Stow defence and he crossed the line to make the score 15-25.

As the game came to a close a strong push enabled Stow to cross the line for a try and from the kick off the ball was stolen by Stow for them to complete the scoring.

Frampton Colts start season with a win FRAMPTON colts got off to a winning start in their Somerset League campaign with a fine 31-7 victory at Cheddar Valley.

Although the team managed to get lost on the way and arrived late, they were ready for the big game .

The pitch was on a slope with wind very strong down the hill, and Frampton had that advantage (although things may have been different if captain Zak Smith had called tails and not heads as coach Mike Weaver had

instructed him).

Frampton started strongly and storming runs from Callum Wyatt on his return from injury and newcomer Luke Slade opened the defence for winger Mike Holden to breeze over.

Holden added a further try following a kick ahead and fly half Aaron Holman kicked the extra points .

The game then became about Lewis Oakley as he ran in a hattrick of tries to take a deserved man of the match award.

Super Summer for Puckle SUMMER 2016 has turned out to be a very successful one for the Pucklechurch Ladies, the club’s Lisa Whitehead reports.

Wanting to keep hold of last years champions title, we won 11 out of the 13 games, with 1 draw and 1 loss scoring a very impressive 45 goals and only conceding 11.

It meant we kept our position at top of the table and be crowned champions for the 2nd year running.

With just a few weeks break, winter league soon crept up on us. A friendly against fellow local team Bristol & West got us back in the swing of things. Fielding just the bare 11 players it was going to be a fitness tester for all. Puckle took a 4-1 and eventually clinched a 6-4 win.

After keeping our spot in Berkeley Division 1 last season, our first league match of the new season was an away game against Old Bristolians. With 13 players available and buoyed from last week’s win, we went into the game positively.

It would prove to be a very close and fast paced first half with both sides having chances, but goalie Jen Martyn was on form. Left wing Sophie Edwards opened the scoring followed by a skilful reverse strike from Rhian Phillips.

A further 2 goals were scored by Heidi Gardiner and Laura Stone - on her return game back from maternity leave to leave the

final score line 4-0, with Sophie Hitch getting the player of the match award.

We are a very social, friendly bunch that love our hockey and who are always on the look out for new players, so if you fancy
