Lottery fund gives cash boost for major medieval barn scheme A GRANT from the Heritage Lottery Fund has boosted plans for refurbishment of Winterbourne’s historically important medieval barn. The £165,000 is set to be a precursor to a much bigger award from the fund (HLF) to help pay the estimated £1.645 million cost of the scheme. South Gloucestershire Council, which owns the barn, is also contributing to the project and the Winterbourne Medieval Barn Trust has to show it can raise £400,000 as its portion of the bill. The HLF grant is development funding to help those involved with the barn build up their proposal. Nerys Watts, head of the HLF in the South West, said: “Winterbourne is one of England’s great surviving medieval barns that can tell us a lot about the history and development of this area. “This investment will help develop plans to breathe new life into this historic building. We look forward to seeing how the project develops over the coming months.”
