Club returns after two-year suspension as youngsters urged to give it their support YOUNG people have been urged to support the new look youth club that is returning to Frampton Cotterell in order to ensure its success.

The club in the Brockeridge Centre will be open for most of the year, including school holidays, to provide activities for youngsters aged from 11-16.

Weekly sessions will run for those aged 11-13 on Tuesday evenings and for older teenagers on Thursdays, with the first nights of the revived facility taking place on July 12 and 14.

The club has been in suspension for the past two years while parish leaders considered alternative ways of supporting a larger number of young people.

Attendance was low when the club last operated but more than 1,000 youngsters responded to a consultation on its future and it is hoped a larger number of members will be the result of that involvement.

The club is being run by Southern Brooks Community Partnerships and will be open to

Frampton Festival ready for fourth edition PREPARATIONS are nearly complete for this year’s Frampton Festival. Organisers say the event, on July 16 at the Centenary Field, promises to be a fun-filled family day.

The Festival committee have been working since January to ensure that popular attractions from previous festivals have been booked as well as securing some new crowd-pullers. Professor

Panic’s Circus returns, along with a variety of fairground rides, tractor rides, climbing wall, flight simulator and the chance to drive a mini Land Rover.

The festival opens with the Thornbury Brass Band, with a variety of events taking place throughout the day including a display ffrom Iron Acton Dog Agility, WMA Taekwon Do, and

Regarded as the most “original” Tudor house in Britain, Acton Court in Iron Acton has just opened for its summer season, with most special events in its programme of activities sold out.

During the public opening, which continues until August 14, full access to the house and grounds will be with a

professional guide only and groups must book in advance.

The site will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Acton Court’s most famous visitor was Henry VIII, who stayed there during a summer progress around the West Country with his second wife, Anne Boleyn, in 1535.

The arrival of the king led Nicholas Poyntz, owner of what was then a moated manor house, to have a lavishly decorated east wing built to impress the monarch.

Staff set to relocate to Yate Margaret’s day council offices in money to remember saving move in London for A NUMBER of staff will move to Yate from Kingswood Civic Centre as part of a review into South Gloucestershire Council’s offices.

The council’s resources sub-committee has agreed to press on with proposals to rent out part of the Kingswood building to a public organisation that has not yet been identified due to commercial sensitivity.

If the scheme goes to plan, the council will save more than £400,000 a year.

Council officers have been authorised to begin negotiations with the prospective tenant to take on a lease for the main part of the Kingswood complex.

That will leave a downstairs One Stop Shop, the council chamber, café and training rooms for the council to continue using.

Back office staff will be relocated to the Badminton Road offices in Yate to occupy empty space there.

Council leader Matthew Riddle said: “I am pleased we have now given the green light for this innovative proposal, which will bring jobs into Kingswood and save more than £400,000.

“The money we save will help us maintain frontline services in a challenging financial environment.”

Queen’s 90th birthday picnic A LIFELONG dedication to the Royal British Legion and its annual Poppy Appeal earned Margaret Bracey a place at a special picnic in London to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday.

The Coalpit Heath greatgrandmother was among thousands of well-wishers from more than 600 charities and organisations that have the monarch as their patron and were invited to the event.

They filled The Mall to enjoy a picnic from hampers given to the party-goers and to cheer the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh when they joined the crowds.

Mrs Bracey, 83, said the hampers even included plastic

ponchos to give protection from the rain.

The stalwart of the Royal British Legion comes from a family with a long military history and sold her first poppy when she was a girl.

She has continued her support of the organisation for many decades and in that time has held a number of roles, including the Poppy Appeal’s Gloucestershire county co-ordinator.

at the barn in Church Lane to stage Hamlet.

The curtain will go up on the production at 2.30pm on Sunday, August 28, and again the gates will open two hours earlier.

More than 3,000 people a year attend activities at the barn but despite its historical and national importance, many residents in the locality are still unaware of its existence.

An estimated £1.64 million is needed to refurbish the structure and the Heritage Lottery Fund recently awarded what is known as development funding of £165,000 to the barn.

That will allow South Gloucestershire Council, which owns the building, and the Winterbourne Medieval Barn Trust to press ahead with proposals to apply for further cash before December 2017.

OPERA, a children’s favourite and Shakespeare are set to feature in the programme of events at Winterbourne’s medieval barn.

Tessitoura Opera returns to the barn with a modern version of Rossini’s La Cenerentola - the Italian name for Cinderella - this time set in the world of reality TV and celebrity magazines.

It takes place at 6pm on Sunday, July 10, but the grounds will be open from 4pm so the audience can have a picnic before the performance.

Ratty, Mole and Badger will be the stars of an event on Sunday, August 21, in an Ian Kenney production of The Wind in the Willows.

Five actors will play a variety of characters and creatures in the family show, which starts at 2.30pm. Picnics can be enjoyed from 12.30pm.

Beesmoor hosts Big Lunch RESIDENTS of Frampton Cotterell overcame early showers

at Beesmoor Playing Fields to enjoy a big lunch in honour of the Queen’s birthday.

The event was organised by members of the playing fields management committee and was opened by Frampton’s own 90 year old Queen lookalike.

Local organisations had stalls and there were arena displays from Kyoto Shotokan Karate Club and the Street Cred dancers.

The weather put paid to the bouncy castle but the Air Training Corps Air Cadets gave people the chance to try their flight simulator and Scout funds were boosted by rides on an electric mini Land Rover Local businesses donated prizes for the raffle which raised nearly £200. With refreshments added, the playing field committee ended the day with £600 to launch the fund-raising for the new play equipment.

With the success of the day, plans are being formed to hold another big lunch next year.

IT may not have been quite Spanish weather, but the sun did shine on the Proms in the Meadows event at Iron Acton as it enjoyed another successful year.

The theme was Spain, and with Spanish flags adorning the stage and the crowd, Spanish themed hats and sangria at the bar, there was certainly a Mediterranean feel to proceedings.

On stage, Cuffy’s Flamenco Trio added to the atmosphere, whilst the music played by the Bristol Millennium Orchestra had a Spanish twist.

Junior Fascinating Rhythm, Iron Acton Community Choir and dancers from the Kathyrn Hurley Dance Academy brought some local talent to proceedings and Vocal Solos from Rosanne Cooper and Timothy Connor brought some magic from the Royal School of Music.

The weather also held for Friday night’s Mash in the Meadows event, with the likes of Flash Harry and Gee Baby I Love You entertaining the crowds.

Free treatments offered in charity fundraiser PEOPLE are being offered the chance of a free massage, yoga sessions and reflexology at a charity pamper afternoon in Iron Acton The Old Rectory Clinic, a complementary health care clinic, is offering some of its therapies for free to raise money for Bristol’s Breast-Cancer Unit Support Trust (BUST).

Volunteers continue fight against invasive weeds A COMMUNITY group has vowed to keep fighting a weed that threatens to take over local beauty spots.

For the last three years, local volunteers have been working alongside Avon Invasive Weed Forum to tackle Himalayan Balsam along the River Frome in Frampton Cotterell.

This year, having received a donation of equipment from AIWF, local volunteers led

by Village Action have been organising their own working parties.

Phil Handy who co-ordinates the group says: “We have already seen a marked reduction in the amount of balsam growing in areas we’ve tackled in previous years. This year we have spread further afield and worked on areas which we’d previously been unable to reach as we didn’t have the equipment”.

the amount of balsam along our stretch of the Frome to manageable levels within three years. We think this is achievable as it is an annual plant and seeds only remain viable for up to two years”.

The group is keen to hear from volunteers who’d like to join up. They say it’s an opportunity to help the environment while getting some gentle exercise and

exploring parts of the riverside not normally accessible.

They would also like to hear from landowners who’d like some help in eliminating balsam along their stretch of the riverbank.

Fresh attempt to build family homes on car park of former Frampton Cotterell pub A NEW attempt is being made to build four houses on a site that used to be the car park of the former Western Coach House pub in Frampton Cotterell.

An outline scheme submitted

by Crossman Homes last year was later withdrawn without being determined.

Now the company has put forward a full application for the detached family houses, with detached garages, on the land on Bristol Road.

Although in the green belt, architects Atelier 17 said the site was regarded as a brownfield location due to its previous use.

The pub is already in residential use, having been converted into three homes, and there is local support for something to be done to improve

the old car park.

Atelier 17, acting for Crossman, claimed in a report to South Gloucestershire Council that the site “was a local eyesore” and that the scheme would bring “a derelict abandoned brownfield site back into appropriate use”.

Frampton Cotterell Parish Council said it did not object to the scheme, provided it did not affect a neighbouring house.

But a listed building officer said while not opposed in principle to the plan, building three instead of four houses would reduce the impact on the locally listed converted pub and allow a more “robust” landscaping scheme.

The plan will be determined by the council at a later date.

Coalpit Heath school’s new lease of life leads to improvements and high Ofsted rating A SCHOOL which has seen a “transformation of learning” continues to be rated highly by education authority Ofsted.

The Manor Church of England Primary School in Coalpit Heath underwent a short inspection by the watchdog, having been previously assessed as good in 2011.

Inspector Lorna Brackstone re-issued that rating but in her letter said the school had “taken on a new lease of life” since the arrival of head teacher Neil McKellar-Turner in September 2014.

She said the achievement of pupils was improving and classrooms were “vibrant and exciting” places to learn.

There were high aspirations for pupils, an effective governing body and a strong and cohesive senior leadership team. Pupils’ attitudes to learning were generally good, with children eager to learn.

Ms Brackstone said achievement in 2015 at the end of years two and six was good.

A higher proportion of pupils than nationally made expected progress in reading, writing and maths and many exceeded that level.

Reading standards at those stages were a consistent strength and the school used extra Government funding effectively to help disadvantaged

youngsters progress. Children with special educational needs and disabilities were also well supported.

But she said the most able pupils had to be challenged to work at their full potential.

Ms Brackstone said Mr McKellar-Turner’s relentless focus on improving teaching and learning had led to a high turnover of staff in the past year.

But she said: “In so doing, it has resulted in a transformation of learning so that teaching staff now share a culture of high expectations and aspirations for their pupils.”

Mr McKellar-Turner said: “We are extremely pleased with our Ofsted report, which rightly recognises that we are a ‘good’ school.

“The letter clearly identifies the huge progress we have made during the last two years in order to provide the best possible education and experience for all of our young learners, each and every day.

“We now have a strong platform on which to build as we continue our journey to make The Manor a truly outstanding school.”

Student to loose locks for charity

A STUDENT at Winterbourne International Academy is to have a drastic haircut to raise money for charity.

13 year old Katie Smith is to have 8 inches cut off from the length of her hair to support a cancer charity. She has been growing her hair for the event since last year.

Youth club back in action after controversial two-year closure comes to an end A YOUTH club is about to reopen in Frampton Cotterell after a controversial two-year absence.

The new club will open in the Brockeridge Centre on Tuesday, July 12, and again two days later to cater for different age groups.

by Frampton Cotterell Parish Council, with the help of a South Gloucestershire Council grant, but also neighbouring parishes so youngsters in those areas can join the weekly sessions.

Lori Ramsay, youth work team leader at Southern Brooks, said activities planned ranged from cookery and sports to creative arts and social action projects. Club members will also be given a voice on community matters through local forums.

The future of youth services in the Frampton area was the subject of a row in 2014 when the then Brockeridge Centre-based club was suspended by Frampton parish leaders.

Lori Ramsay said: “After being involved in the original consultation regarding youth work provision in and around Frampton Cotterell, I am pleased to be involved in the set up of the new youth club. We hope to see young people from Frampton and surrounding areas join the club as of July 12.

“We have a varied programme alongside opportunities to volunteer, which should give young people a chance to get involved in what’s happening locally as well as developing new and existing life skills along the way.”

Be king of the (sand) castle IF you are always itching to trample on sandcastles on the beach, the South Glos Show is the place to be in early August.

The show is hosting the installation of a 20 tonne sand sculpture within its Kids Zone.

The sculpture will be built by artists from the Weston Sand Sculpture Festival with the design itself to be decided through a social media competition.

The show is hoping to make some money for Meningitis Now, its nominated charity, by holding a ‘Demolition Raffle’ over the event on 6 and 7 August.

The winner of the raffle will get the opportunity to destroy the sculpture at the end of the weekend

Freewheeling Dilys on the road to competition success YOUNG-at-heart Dilys Frampton has been shortlisted in a nationwide search to find the UK’s most colourful older characters.

Dilys, 88, who has been described as a Hell’s Angel on her mobility scooter, is a South West regional finalist in the contest run by retirement house builder McCarthy and Stone.

The competition for the over60s is aimed at rewarding people who live life to the full and don’t let their age be a barrier.

Dilys, who lives in Yate, said her fly-by-night attitude and zest for life could help her in the competition.

She said: “I love Sudoku, I love going shopping and I always ride my scooter into town – I’ve been told I’m a bit of a Hell’s Angel on it.

“I go to drawing nights and game nights at the development

where I live and I also enjoy playing skittles. I love singing, giving cuddles and I think it’s important to laugh a lot and not take life too seriously.”

TV personality Arlene Phillips will be among the judges who will select the South West’s winner out of three shortlisted candidates.

The regional winner will then go forward to the national final, which will be decided by public vote in August.

Cameras roll at Frampton Cotterell business A SMALL upcycling business is to get a boost after Channel 4 cameras came to film at the owner’s house.

Louise Vigars runs her business, Eclectic Avenue, from a cabin in her back garden on Beesmoor Road, which acts as

her workshop and a showroom.

Now she’s waiting for her debut on the small screen after being the subject of Channel 4’s new series of ‘Fill Your House for Free’. The programme is fronted

by Gok Wan after previously having Kirstie Allsopp at the the helm.

Several of her upcycling projects were filmed for a section of the show designed to inspire people to have a go in their own homes.

Louise told the Voice the programme makers were interested in several of her projects; “These included candle holders made from oyster shells, hanging planters made from tin cans - taken from the recycling bins at Bridge House care home with their kind permission - and a peacock picture made entirely from torn up wallpaper samples and old buttons.”

“The filming took a day and included an interview about my sources of inspiration and how I got started as an upcycler” The programme is due to be aired later this summer, although

the exact dates aren’t known yet.

Her upcycling business, sells vintage & handmade goods such as cushions and upcycled art work from her workshop at home and at vintage fairs in the region.

She also offers a furniture

painting service to update old items, as well as selling furniture that she has upcycled and painted.

Louise is also in demand for talks and demonstrations about upcycling to local groups.

Apprentices rise to the challenge to help complete new Coalpit Heath homes TWO apprentice painter and decorators helped put the finishing touches to new homes in Coalpit Heath.

Merlin Housing Society is building 39 affordable homes in the village and arranged for apprentices Beth Tanner and Chantelle Blewett to spend time on the site.

The pair each had a new flat to decorate throughout, with the duo rising to the challenge.

Chantelle said despite not feeling over-confident at the start, she really enjoyed the work.

She said: “We had to do everything ourselves and I found it more exciting because of that. I was really proud at the end of it.”

Development surveyor Dave Llewellyn, himself a former painter and decorator, said: “They’ve done as good a job as

anything done by the subcontractors, if not better.

“I was really proud that we could put two of our apprentices into these flats and they could easily hold their own against more experienced decorators.”

Work on the site should be finished this month, ready for people to move in.

The properties are among 130 that Merlin is planning to build this year as it works towards its goal of building 300 homes every year by 2019.

Meanwhile, the next phase of a multi-million pound project to improve the condition of more than 1,000 non-traditional homes in South Gloucestershire including in Winterbourne - has started following the awarding by Merlin of a £2.5 million contract to Keepmoat.

AWARD winning Bath Ales brewery and its 11 pubs have been acquired by St Austell Brewery in a deal completed for an undisclosed sum.

Independent Bath Ales, based in Warmley, was established 21 years ago and current directors, including founder and managing director Roger Jones, will play an active role during the process of the transition.

All of its beers will continue to be produced at its brewery and St Austell said it had committed to a schedule of investment to expand the brewing and packaging facilities.

Mr Jones said: “This is a really

exciting move for Bath Ales.

With the investment and broader support from St Austell Brewery we are better placed to capture the opportunity that exists for Bath Ales.”

Luke Hall’s campaign to finish the so-called ‘Road to Nowhere’ in Yate has gone to Westminster.

The MP wants a section of road that would have linked South Yate to Station Road to be finished, despite the project being abandoned in the 1970’s Now Mr Hall has met the Chancellor, George Osborne, to discuss the project. ARMY chefs will show how they cater for large numbers of hungry soldiers when a team from 162 Regiment, Royal Logistics Corps, spend a day in Chipping Sodbury.

The reservists will provide a taste of military cuisine at the town’s food and drink festival, demonstrating how they turn basic rations into welcome meals, often while operating in dangerous locations.

The visit by the Swindonbased chefs on Saturday, September 10, will be among the

Community Association in fundraising drive

A SUMMER party is being held in Winterbourne to help raise money for the local community association.

Winterbourne and District Community Association (WADCA) is holding the event on Saturday 9 July from 10am to 2pm at their centre on Watleys End Road, with free entry.

In the evening there is concert, with rockabilly group Twenty Flight Rock playing from 9pm (doors open 8pm). Ticket’s for the concert are £5 in advance from WADCA:

M4 junction 'would put us on map' - MP FURTHER evidence that the Government is making a new M4 junction near Emersons Green a priority has been welcomed by the local MP. Conservative Chris Skidmore said a statement from Communities Minister Greg Clark that the scheme is one of only a few being considered by Highways England confirmed that the project was being seriously considered.

Mr Skidmore has campaigned for a junction 18a for several years and spearheaded the launch of the cross-party Gateway 2 Growth organisation, which is backed by more than 100 businesses and thousands of residents.

In his last Budget, Chancellor George Osborne announced a £500,000 feasibility study for the motorway link.

Mr Clark, in a letter to the leaders of South Gloucestershire and Bath and North East Somerset councils, said: “Government has confirmed that a new Junction 18A, plus a link road to the Bristol Ring Road, could be at the front of the queue for funding in the next road investment strategy.”

He said it could shave five miles and as much as 15 minutes off peak-time journeys to Swindon.

Mr Skidmore said: “This latest statement is great news in showing that the M4 Link is now a real possibility. I am determined to fight for the maximum possible investment in our area to make people’s lives better, and I believe that a junction has an important part to play in putting Kingswood area on the map.”

ITH the summer holidays fast approaching my thoughts quickly move to the holiday club, “The Guardians of Ancora”, being planned by the churches in Frampton Cotterell and Coalpit Heath this summer from 1-5 August. The name may sound a little strange to some of you but it comes from a computer game you can download for free for children. Why not have a look on their website guardiansofancora.com.

Ancora comes from a Latin word meaning anchor or another meaning can be hope. In the game the children can go on quests to find the “lost stories” of the Bible. When they find them and they are brought back to Ancora, the city of hope, the stories are told and each time this happens the spire of light in the city is fuelled.

And so my thoughts turn to those childhood memories we have not lost, some good, some bad. But don’t we all love

to share those memories with our children, grandchildren or friend’s children. It makes me think how important memories are, how they shape us and make us. I love it when my children say ‘I will never forget that walk when…….’ and their face lights up as they tell the story. These are the things that are important, often the small inexpensive things, that stay with us for life. I have very happy memories of when I was helping my Dad with DIY, and often he would tell me stories from his childhood or share stories from the Bible which have stuck with me all these years. The stories were so good I then passed them on to my children and other children I mix with. There is actually a verse in the Bible (Psalm Chapter 78 verses 1-6) which tells us to pass on the stories we know to our children so that these things are not forgotten.

And so this year at holiday club we hope the children can help us find some treasures

which will enable us to share stories and memories that will stay with them.

Around the W.I. Frampton Cotterell WI

The summer is always busy for Frampton Cotterell WI, and this year has been no exception.

Sunday 12th June saw The Big Picnic being hosted at Beesmoor Road playing fields, to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday – the weather came good in the end and it made the day. We held a “guess the weight of the cake” competition which was very popular, the first person to make a guess was actually the one to get the weight spot on! Proceeds went to the charity Heads Together.

Also in June, The Globe hosted a Greek night for us – sadly the weather wasn’t very Greek at all (thunder storms in fact!), however thanks to some delicious home-cooked authentic Greek food, nobody really noticed as we enjoyed sharing platters, tasty main courses and deserts. A big thank you to Lloyd and team for looking after us so well and for

managing to get all that food out on time.

The June talk was given by Lauren Manning from Frome Valley Osteopaths – Lauren specialises in osteopathy which is essentially about the interaction and connectivity between bone, muscle and connective tissue – its all about the way the body works as a unit. Lauren demonstrated how the way in which you carry the weight in your body can effect your posture, which can sometimes lead to conditions

such as slipped disks, arthritis, etc. As well as treating people, Lauren also has the skills to treat animals such as dogs and horses, and she comes highly recommended by several members who have already felt the benefits of her treatments.

We’re looking forward to the Frampton Festival in July, where we will be hosting our regular cakes/home cooked goodies stall and selling copies of our very own members’ cookery book. Do come and say hello if you are passing by.

The July talk on the 26th will be on how to create a Mood Board, this will be made by a representative from Dodington Design School.

Our other events coming up over the coming months will include a presentation from a local award-winning gardener and a chance to have a go at Morris Dancing.

Visitors are welcome to our monthly meetings at St

Peter’s Hall on School Road at 7.45pm, on the 4th Tuesday of the month. There is a charge of £2.50 for the evening and any new members can join by paying a membership fee.

At our last meeting, our Speaker Robert Tinker showed us slides of Interesting Nooks and Crannies around Bristol.

We started off at the Avon Gorge Hotel and were shown photographs of the building of the Clifton Rocks Railway which took two years to build from top to bottom. The railway was powered by water and it cost 1d to go up and half a penny to go down. We were shown a picture of the old station at the bottom.

made into a bomb shelter and at the bottom the BBC had a secret transmitter room. Roberts photos took us to Castle Park, Cabot Circus, Bristol Bridge, Welsh Back, The Llandogger Trow, Bristol Granary, St Mary Redcliffe, The Centre, Hotwells, Temple Meads, Millenium Square, St Nicholas’ Church and Market, The Corn Exchanhge and Severn Beach.

In July we are planning to have a celebratory tea party in Dawns garden to celebrate the Queens 90th birthday and a summer trip to Truffles Gardens in Bishops Sutton.

of these popular events will be taking place in Our speaker for June was Peter Berry whose talk was entitled ‘The Dead Sea of Damascus’. He explained that he was an avid steam train enthusiast and took holidays where they could also admire and photograph steam trains.

This hobby seemed to have taken him worldwide and as well as his graphic descriptions he showed some excellent photographs not just of the trains but architecture and sights. He did admit that in some of the more obscure places the group would pay to have use of an elderly steam train and driver for the day and get him to stop in places to suit the photographers or speed up so that the smoke went in the right direction.

Supermarket worker receives £42,000 pay out A SUPERMARKET worker has received a £42,000 pay out after an accident at Sainsbury's in Emersons Green.

The accident caused such physical and psychological damage that the catering assistant was forced into early retirement.

The accident happened when the woman was checking the temperature of a fridge.

As she pulled open one of the fridge doors, the top hinge snapped and the corner of the metal door hit her face, lacerating her nose.

She was initially checked over by first-aid staff before visiting her GP, who referred her to hospital. It was discovered that as well as the laceration, the force of the door hitting her had dislocated her nose, obstructing airflow in her left nostril.

The woman, who lives in Kingswood, has not been able to return to work and she retired six months after the accident.

She has had two operations to trim cartilage from her nose, but she continues to find breathing difficult and has suffered a partial loss to her sense of smell. As a result of the accident, she has also developed Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

After her accident, she contacted Thompsons Solicitors to investigate a compensation claim. The company's investigations found that other colleagues had encountered similar problems when trying to

open the fridge doors.

The woman said: “Checking the temperature of the fridges was a daily task, so to suffer such injuries and lose my job because of something so routine is extremely frustrating. I only found out afterwards that other people had worked in pairs to make sure the heavy doors didn’t come completely off their hinges.

“I’ve had two rounds of surgery to improve my breathing but it’s still not back to how it was – I feel like I’ve constantly

got a cold. It’s really knocked the confidence out of me but thankfully I was able to recoup my financial losses and make sure my employer was held responsible with support from Thompsons.”

David Coulthard, of Thompsons Solicitors, said: “This unfortunate accident highlights how any workplace can be dangerous if business owners don’t follow procedure. There really is no excuse, especially for a national supermarket chain like Sainsbury’s, to not provide a safe place of work for employees or address recurring issues with work equipment.

“Five years on our client is still feeling the effects of this accident both physically and psychologically, with no certainty that her breathing problems will improve.”

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “Colleague safety is our top priority and we deeply regret what happened.”

Surgery is more effective for diabetes than lifestyle changes’

Volunteers needed by Dance school in sitting service to help give with chance of carers a break

top award A dance school in Iron Acton has been shortlisted for a prestigious award. The Kathryn Hurley Dance Academy has made it through to the last stages of the Dance School of the Year awards.

Entries were received from schools of all sizes across the UK and Europe with 37 schools shortlisted across four categories ranging from xschools to full time colleges.

Kathryn Hurley, who runs the lessons at Iron Acton Village Hall and whose students perform at festivals throughout the summer told the Voice; “Being selected is a wonderful culmination of many years hard work. I am extremely fortunate to teach such lovely

pupils with very supportive families. It is very rewarding to see students grow from Baby Ballerinas to confident young people having gained a love of dance and theatre along the way. To be a Finalist is huge recognition for everyone’s hard work and achievements at the Academy”.

The winners will be announced at the Awards Ceremony which will be held at a black-tie event at the Mercure Southgate Hotel in Exeter next month.Guest of honour is the broadcaster, writer and life-long dance supporter Angela Rippon.

A SERVICE for carers is hoping to find someone who can give up a few hours a week to take a Yate man to the gym and give his wife a break.

The South Gloucestershire Sitting Service said the man, in his 60s, had dementia and had suffered a stroke.

He enjoyed going to Yate Leisure Centre on a Tuesday and although he could manage in the gym, he needed someone to give him a lift there and provide a little help.

If a volunteer could be found, that would allow his wife to spend some time with her daughter once a week.

Marilyn Crump, the sitting service co-ordinator, said: “It would be fantastic if we could match this gentleman up with a local man who can support him in this. It would make a huge difference to his wife, who is unable to leave him.”

She said the volunteer

required would have to live in the Yate area, have their own transport, be confident and be able to use their own initiative.

The service is also looking to recruit more volunteers in order to help other people who care for relatives.

Marilyn said: “Carers often find their own health and wellbeing suffers due to the pressure of caring, so having a regular short break can make all the difference.

“All volunteers receive comprehensive induction, regular training and support and expenses are reimbursed. We also have regular social events for our volunteers.

“Demand for the ‘Breaks for Carers’ service is very high so we’re desperate to recruit more volunteers who can provide this invaluable service for carers.”

ET us talk about hot and sweaty feet by Pooja Sharma, Podiatrist at the Willow Brook Clinic Sweating is our body’s natural way of cooling itself down. Sweaty feet, or hyperhidrosis, is a common condition that causes excessive sweating on the soles of the feet.

Sweaty feet can lead to, or exacerbate, problems such as athlete’s foot, plantar warts, or other skin conditions.

There are over 250,000 sweat glands in each foot. Each foot normally produces half a pint of moisture per day. It’s important to keep in mind that our feet are sweating all the time, and bacteria are naturally present on our skin. For most people the sweat evaporates quickly, but for others the sweat is trapped within the glands, which allows bacteria to grow. This can be a problem if a person has more than the normal amount of sweat glands in their feet and is prone to excessive sweating.

There are various reasons why our feet sweat. Although the condition is most commonly brought on by emotional stress or physical exercise, there are other causes.

Heredity is said to play a role, as individuals with sweaty feet

Your body’s toxicity levels can also cause your feet to sweat.

Toxins originate from foods we eat. Alcohol is also a toxin. If you do not exercise often, these toxins can build up and cause your feet and other parts of your body to sweat.

Your feet may also be sweating due to the type of footwear you use. Certain footwear, such as nylon and cotton socks, or shoes made of plastic or some type of synthetic fabric lining, prevent sweat from evaporating.

Nylon and 100% cotton socks can act like a sponge and lock moisture in. This keeps your feet wet at all times and leads to additional problems like athlete’s foot and toenail fungus.

If you are suffering from sweaty feet, talk to your podiatrist about the problem. Feet that sweat excessively and are not treated properly can lead to additional problems like itchiness, redness, odours and burning sensations.

SPORT STARTS HERE

Pucklechurch intent on keeping summer hockey title AFTER what was a tense but happy ending to Winter league the Pucklechurch Ladies have now set their eyes onto keeping hold of the Summer League title, the club’s Lisa Whitehead reports.

Knowle was our first opposition and with forward Emily Pollock still on top form she fired 5 goals past them.

However Knowle did sneak one in themselves making the scoreline a still convincing 5-1 win to the girls in yellow.

After such a fine performance, next up were Keynsham 1st’s. With accurate

passing, letting the ball do the work we were soon running the show and with a hat-trick from Pollock and a superb committed dive from Tina Hill, the final score was 4-2.

Bristol Ladies and Bristol & West were the next two fixtures.

With the mid-field linking up well the forwards, keeping the ball out wide and showing off individual skills, both games finished 3-0 with goals coming from Pollock and captain Lisa Whitehead, moving us to top of the table.

City of Bath who were sat in 2nd was the next match. With

the squad down to the bare 11, no goalie and a beautiful hot summers evening we knew this would be our toughest match to date.

It would be a fast and furious start but we soon settled and played our own game. It didn’t take long for the first goal to come, left wing Sophie Edwards plucking the ball out the air from a cross in from the right wing.

Next up, Pollock would add to her ever growing goal bank to make it 2-0. The final result was 3-1 in what was an impressive team performance.

Yate athletes enjoy early A triple double - school sets twin basketball record season success

A Frampton Cotterell primary school had teams looking twice after fielding a basketball squad with three sets of twins.

The Village’s C of E primary school had the twins in their contingent at the South Gloucestershire Festival of sport.

The year 5/6 basketball team won the trophy last year and with twin power reached the semi-finals in a very strong tournament.

The school also entered a year

3/4 team in the tag rugby event for the first time and they came close to taking the title, narrowly loosing out in the last play of the game in the final.

New chairman for football club YINKA Brownlow has been elected chairman of Frampton Athletic football club. it follows the decision by long standing chairman, Mike Williams, to step down from the position.

Brownlow was elected to the role with an unanimous vote by the committee with Yinka will look to take the club forward with a fresh approach to its running.

A vote of thanks was given to Mike Williams for all of his hard work and efforts over the more than 20 years at the helm, and he was also give Life Member status by the club in honour of his commitment.

The committee are also looking for further volunteers to help with the running of the club, mainly on match days and in particular are looking to hire a groundsman to cut the grass and the mark the pitch out on a weekly basis throughout the season. Anyone interested in either becoming a member of the committee or groundsman should email the club at FramptonAthleticFC@live.co.uk.

Pre-Season Training Starts in July Ahead of the new season, pre-season training will start on Wednesday 6th July, 6.30pm at Beesmoor Road Playing Fields.

New players are welcome to join the club for training as they look to create strong squad for the season ahead.

Following last season, Frampton’s Reserves have had their status confirmed in Division 1 of the Bristol & District Leagues, and the ‘A’ Team have been confirmed in Division 4.

Next season Frampton will aim to consolidate their positions in all 3 of the respective leagues as they look to improve their status both on and off the pitch.

THE new athletics season is turning out to be a successful one for Yate athletes.

The senior men and women, in a combined team with Bristol & West AC in Division One of the Midland League, have been the surprise package of the season so far. They won their first match, held at Yate, by a considerable margin over Birchfield Harriers, one of the top clubs in the country.

The women’s 1500m produced the best performance of the meeting when teenager Hannah Hobbs held off a strong challenge from the Birchfield women to win on the line.

The race of the day was won by another young Yate athlete, 16 year old Dan Brooks who took the men’s 100m against strong opposition posting an impressive time of 10.8 seconds. Overall the team finished third with the second, third and fourth teams covered by only five points.

In the U17/U20 Youth Development League, Yate athletes have distinguished themselves in both matches played. In atrocious conditions in Plymouth, Team Avon ran out winners,and in Newport, the athletes finished in third place, leaving them in second overall.

The U13/U15 YDL is a story of on going success with two wins from two matches both by big margins. Home advantage didn’t stop Yate beating Team Bath on their own track. Stand out athlete Abdi Hasan looked unbeatable over 800m and 1500m and in the second match Poppy Clark gave the under-13 girls a lesson in how to run over 1200m coming home 15 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor.

Schools athletics are taking centre stage at the moment with many Yate athletes picked to represent Avon or Gloucestershire.

Next up is the local Avon Track and Field League where the Yate club hopes to dominate in as many age groups as possible.

Bowl along to club’s annual open day BEGBROOK Green Bowling Club is offering people the chance to try out the game of bowls as part of their open day.

The mixed bowls club has been running for 22 years and is located on Frenchay Park Road, just alongside the Stapleton & Begbrook Community Association.

Ken Maynard, the club’s treasurer said; “We have a range of activities which should ensure that you have a fun afternoon out with more than a fair chance of meeting new friends and getting involved in a great, healthy activity.”

A hog roast is available at the event which starts from 2.00pm on Sunday 24 July.
