Christmas tree farm makes charity donation despite theft

Young people told: have your say Young people are being asked for their opinions on the future of youth provision in the area.

A survey is being launched this month to get an idea of what sort of youth service is needed for Frampton Cotterell, Coalpit Heath and the surrounding areas.

The initiative comes from the parish councils of Frampton Cotterell and Westerleigh, and follows the closure of the youth club at the Brockeridge Centre last year.

A senior youth worker has been commissioned to find out young people’s views via Facebook and Twitter, as well as a visit to Winterbourne International Academy.

The deadline for submissions is the end of January, with the reports findings being sent to the two councils at the end of February.

COMMERCIAL photographer Mike Rich has taken thousands of pictures since turning his hobby into a business.

But after many years behind the lens, he is now about to take life easier after retiring from his studio in Winterbourne.

Mike, aged 71, had always enjoyed photography and developed it into a career initially in Bath. One of his many jobs was to take pictures of each city mayor.

He later worked from his house in Frampton Cotterell while looking for suitable premises closer to home.

About four years ago he bought a shop in Flaxpits Lane, Winterbourne, where demand for his portrait pictures grew.

Mike said: “I used to do a lot of weddings as well but gradually I wound those down because of the number of portraits I was asked to do. “Recently I thought it was high time I stopped so eventually the shop will be leased to another business.”

Mike’s daughter, Sara, does not take pictures but she has always been involved in the production side of the studio. Father and daughter have also worked with photographer Julie Wiltshire and the two women plan to continue in business together.

They are especially keen on taking pictures of babies and they are hoping to concentrate on that market, although not at the Winterbourne premises.

Mike said: “I’ve been chairman of the Crossbow Camera Club for a long time so will continue with that. I’m also keen on radio controlled model aircraft.

“But my wife, Gerry, and I also want to do some more travelling now I don’t have to always think about the business.”

Chapel renovation team defends its project THE team behind plans to renovate an old chapel in Winterbourne has defended its efforts to convert it for community use.

Members of the group hope to use Ebenezer Chapel in Watley’s End Road for a host of activities, with a feasibility study set to be started in the spring.

But November’s Frome Valley Voice carried a letter from Frampton Cotterell Community Association committee member Janet Moore that questioned the need for another such facility in the area.

She suggested a number of local community buildings were under-used and claimed the chapel scheme was a waste of money.

But Mandy Nicholls, who chairs the chapel project team, said there had been many positive responses to the idea.

She said: “The project has been put together to save this beautiful building, which has great historical value to the local community.

“The chapel needs lots of repair and restorative work and we would like to see it returned to serving the local community.

“We have been consulting with the Winterbourne Community Centre, South Gloucestershire Council, Salem Church - the original owners and the current owner, along with many others, in order to carefully and sensitively suggest the idea of bringing the chapel back to the community as a notfor-profit organisation.”

Mandy said the aim was to “complement and enhance existing facilities in the local area” rather than duplicating existing facilities.

She said the group wanted to

work with other local centres to promote activities and welcomed ideas on use of the chapel, offers of help, expertise in restoring it and views via the feasibility study.

The scheme aims to focus on arts and crafts, as well as facilities for young families, children’s activities – outside of pre-schools – and teenagers. A food market and café could also be introduced.

But it is estimated it will cost about £200,000 to buy the

chapel, get planning consent and carry out the conversion, for which it is hoped to get grant funding.

Mandy said: “I’d welcome the opportunity to meet and discuss our proposals with the Frampton Cotterell Community Association.”

Festive generosity gives boost to children’s charity KIND hearted customers of Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm look set to have given hundreds of pounds to charity after decorating their homes with locally grown festive trees.

With the family-run business also making a donation, it is hoped a sizeable sum will now be given to the Jessie May Trust.

The generosity of customers is in contrast to thieves who, in the run-up to Christmas, stole some 80 trees from the 18-acre plantation operated by Peter Maughan and his son Simon.

The trees had been cut ready for sale when the thieves broke in and helped themselves.

The theft failed to prevent the Maughans meeting the needs of families turning up to buy trees but they were upset and saddened by the raid.

However, the donations from customers restored their faith and they are looking forward to handing over the much needed cash to the Kingswood-based children’s charity.

The Jessie May Trust provides free nursing care for youngsters with life limiting conditions in their own homes.

Simon Maughan said some money may also be given to other charities, once he and his father know how much has been collected.

He said: “Apart from the theft, we had a good year. The weather was kind and our customers were all great. A few people told us they were buying a real tree instead of having an artificial one so we hope they enjoyed having it in their home.”

Solar farm plans submitted for Badminton Road site PLANS have been submitted by South Gloucestershire Council for a solar farm off Badminton Road - one of two the authority wants to develop to generate its own electricity.

The scheme is for 2.5 acres opposite the council’s offices on the edge of Yate, with construction expected to take about 12 weeks, if it gives itself planning permission.

Previously used for landfill, the site is classed as brownfield and could accommodate up to 1,820 solar panels.

The scheme would generate power for the council’s nearby offices, leading to a cut in its conventional power requirements and its carbon footprint.

Any electricity not used by the council, such as during weekends or holidays, would be exported to the local electricity network.

South Gloucestershire said access to the proposed site would be from the A432 along Badminton Road, using the existing entrance off a roundabout.

During construction, an average of ten lorry movements would be likely every day, together with 28 movements of light vehicles.

The council said there would be no effect on rights of way as the nearest public footpath was the Frome Valley Walkway approximately 100 metres from the site boundary.

The scheme has been described as relatively small compared to commercial solar farms such as the nearby Says Court site in Westerleigh, which covers 100 acres.

As Mad as a Hatter - garden tribute to local industry gets green light for show Budding local garden designer Gary Bristow is celebrating after his garden design was selected for the Royal Horticulture Society Malvern Spring Festival.

This will be Gary’s first show garden and he will be one of just seven Festival show gardens at the prestigious RHS event in the spring.

Entitled “As Mad as a Hatter”, the garden draws inspiration from the long forgotten story of the hatters of Frampton Cotterell. The project is a celebration of felt hat making in South Gloucestershire when the region was at the centre of the hat making industry producing millions of felt hats.

Along with local pennant stone, original timber hat moulds and stained glass, the garden will feature a spectacular and diverse range of plants including flowers, herbs and vegetables. Woad and Madder, two plants traditionally used to dye felt hats will be incorporated into the planting

scheme.

With 86,000 festival goers and 2.3 million BBC Gardeners’ World viewers, the show is a highlight of the gardening year. The RHS Malvern Spring Festival runs from 7th to 10th May 2015 at the Three Counties Showground, Malvern.

Café plan for empty shop and salon A VACANT flooring shop and hairdressing salon in Coalpit Heath could be converted into a café.

A plan has been submitted to South Gloucestershire Council for the premises at 225 Badminton Road, where it is also proposed to have a one-bedroom self contained flat.

Although both Westerleigh and Frampton Cotterell parish councils have raised no objection to the scheme, they have raised concerns about parking arrangements.

But one objection already received by planners from a nearby resident has questioned the proposed seven-day-aweek operation of the café, including bank holidays, and its impact on neighbours.

The objection also raised concerns about food and cooking odours, the potential effect of food waste on the drainage system and the noise of customers and delivery drivers arriving and leaving.

The resident further opposed the possibility of outdoor seating and any plan to sell alcohol.

Environmental officers have asked for an assessment detailing how noise and odours will be controlled if the scheme gets permission.

They said: “Late night use of the premises may be detrimental to residential amenity by

reason of noise and general disturbance.

“An hours of use condition should be considered to control the impact of the development on nearby residential properties.”

They also said there should be a restriction of working hours during the period of building and conversion.

The plan will be considered by South Gloucestershire Council at a later date.

Open day at Coalpit Heath hall AN open day is about to be held at Coalpit Heath Village Hall to give people the chance to see the facilities provided.

The hall on Badminton Road is home to local clubs and organisations such as the guides, a fishing club and Probus – the group for retired or semi-retired business and professional people.

It is also the base for a variety of activities ranging from snooker and cribbage to skittles for the disabled and bingo.

Facilities include a main hall and a smaller space, a stage, kitchen and bar, as well as two full-size snooker tables.

Anyone with a cue can have a game on the open day, which takes place on Sunday, January 18, from 11am-4pm.

Julie O’Donoghue, a member of the committee, said the hall - also known as the Miners Social Club - was often hired out for private functions and every month a table top sale was held to raise money for hall funds. The next sale will be on Saturday, February 7, from 1pm3pm.

Although largely self-funded, Julie said the hall had recently been granted £15,000 through the New Homes Bonus Scheme to pay for the installation of solar panels, which are aimed at cutting the running costs of the building.

Long standing Frampton Parish Councillor has died Stan Wilson passed away just before Christmas in hospital. His health had deteriorated after a fall a few weeks before.

Councillor Dave hockey, who served with Mr Wilson on the council said; “Stan was a much loved character - he did serve as Chair of the Planning Committee for many years and did it really well”.

Young people urged to have their say on youth service A SURVEY has been launched to get an idea of what kind of youth service is needed in Frampton Cotterell, Westerleigh and surrounding areas.

The survey comes after youth club sessions at the Brockeridge Centre in Frampton were stopped in the spring of 2014 to allow a review of services to be carried out.

Frampton Cotterell Parish Council had been funding the club since 2000, with sessions run twice a week.

But it wanted to look at other possible ways of supporting young people and suspended the club to allow alternative ideas to be considered.

The closure came as staffing had fallen to just one youth worker after the earlier resignation of the club leader and it was thought to be a good time to take stock. The remaining youth worker was made redundant and a working group formed to consider options.

But some people had opposed the move, unsuccessfully urging the council to keep the club open at least while the review took place.

At the time, the council said it would consult with local residents, especially young people, before deciding on how

to proceed.

That is now taking place, with senior youth worker Lori Ramsay commissioned by Frampton Cotterell and Westerleigh parish councils to find out what those aged between 11 and 16 would like to see provided for them.

She said: “This project allows me to give the local young people of Frampton Cotterell, Westerleigh and surrounding areas a voice to tell me what they need and want in terms of their youth service.

“All findings will be reported back to the councils by February 25.”

The deadline for comments is January 31, with those who want their say invited to complete an online survey via Facebook and Twitter accounts. Lori also plans to visit Winterbourne International Academy during the new term to hear what students have to say.

Frampton Cotterell parish clerk, Kieran Warren, said: “The message we are jointly putting out with Westerleigh is ‘Tell us what you want’.

“We genuinely want the views of young people in our areas.

What we had been providing before might have been OK but it could be better. We are interested in getting new ideas from as many people as possible.”

Before it closed, the average club attendance was only about 10 or 11 so the aim is to find ways of supporting many more local youngsters.

Frampton turns out for man with terminal cancer

Dave enjoys the surprise carol concert

Over 200 people turned out in torrential rain to make a Frampton man’s last Christmas special.

Dave Hunt, who had been diagnosed with lung cancer, was surprised when well wishes turned up on his lawn, complete with the Staple Hill Salvation Army band, to sing Christmas carols and provide festive decorations for the garden.

Sadly, Mr Hunt passed away on Christmas Eve. Mr Hunt’s wife Theresa said the family had been overwhelmed by the act of kindness.

Chancellor pledges £1m to Great Western Air Ambulance George Osborne, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, has visited the Great Western Air Ambulance in Filton after pledging of £1m of funding to run the service’s helicopter.

The funding will allow the Great Western Air Ambulance service to run its EC135 helicopter for a year. The helicopter is based in Filton, and is part of the regional 999 emergency response service. It is the youngest air ambulance in England and Wales and the cash helps secure the charity’s future as it has just upgraded to the EC135 helicopter.

The Chancellor visited Filton last month, meeting members of the critical care team including two of the original crew members Critical Care Paramedic Pete Sadler and Clinical Support Officer John Wood and seeing the helicopter that the funds will support.

The Chancellor made the funding pledge at last week’s

Autumn Statement. Mr Osborne also announced VAT refunds to all air ambulance charities, worth £25 million over five years.

This funding comes from Libor fines levied on banks. The Chancellor pledged that all the proceeds of these fines would be spent during this parliament on military and blue light good causes.

Mr Osborne said: “The Great Western Air Ambulance saves lives across the south west, so I’m delighted to be able to keep their helicopter flying with £1m of additional funding.

“This funding comes from Libor fines levied on banks, and it’s only right that funds from those who demonstrated the worst values should go to those, like the brave air ambulance crews, who demonstrate the best of British values on a daily basis.”

Ofsted’s good rating for Hambrook pre-school A PRE-school and after-school club in Hambrook has been rated highly by an inspector from the education watchdog.

Hambrook Hedgehogs in Moorend Road was given an overall assessment of good by Ofsted’s Dominique Bird.

But in one of the key areas - the contribution of the early years provision to the well-being of children – Ms Bird said the provision was outstanding.

She said educational programmes provided by the facility were good.

Staff knew the youngsters exceptionally well, including their individual needs and interests, which helped children make good progress and be ready for the next stage in their learning.

Good questioning techniques by staff helped develop the language and communication skills of the children, who were also taught a range of social skills.

Ms Bird said effective professional development of the experienced and well qualified staff ensured consistent good quality care and teaching.

She said: “Staff have a good understanding of how children learn and develop. They work consistently to ensure that all children get the same quality of care and education.

“Children are highly interested and occupied in play and as a result, they behave very well.

“Staff are excellent role models. They use consistently good teaching strategies, which promotes children’s well-being and children have rich relationships with staff.”

Ms Bird also praised the good links that had been developed with local schools and the regular activities and visits that prepared the older children for their eventual move into school.

A road that has been closed to traffic has been spruced up for the walkers, horse riders and cyclists that use it.

The council’s Streetcare department brought scrapers, brushers, gulley cleaners and hedge cutting equipment to clean and tidy up Frampton End Road.

Local resident Alan Bracey agreed to organise a group of volunteers to keep the road up to scratch all year round, provided South Gloucestershire Council’s Streetcare Team did a major

Metal box to monitor new bridge

A metal cabinet next to the new Church Road bridge is playing a key role in checking how the revolutionary structure is fairing.

The cabinet, which is temporary, is part of a scheme to carry out load tests.

The University of Bristol, in conjunction with South Glos highway engineers, has carried out overnight load tests on the composite bridge deck using sensors which are wired up to the cabinet.

If the data provided from the load tests has high integrity and can be used in their research, the University will bid for funding to repeat the tests in the next three years.

Because the new Church Road composite bridge deck was only the second of its type installed in the country, the university research is critical to the future development of composites for the bridge deck industry in the UK.

Experts say there is huge potential for this new industry, bearing in mind the future needs

associated with the electrification of rail lines which often require bridges to be raised in height and

also because of the opportunities associated with the new bridges needed for the HS2 train line.

Police are appealing for witnesses following a robbery and an attempted robbery in Frampton Cotterell and Yate.

The first incident took place in Church Road, Frampton Cotterell, at approximately 11.20pm on December 22. A man had just walked past Western Avenue when a dark coloured 'works style' van drove past him and turned into Western Avenue.

Two men then approached the victim carrying silver metal bars and told him to stop. The victim ran off and knocked on a neighbouring house.

The two men, both of which were white and one was wearing a white hooded top and the other a blue hooded top, made off.

Approximately 10 minutes later, four 17 year olds were walking down a footpath along Sunridge Park in Yate when they were made aware of two men behind them.

As they turned down the path towards Birkdale, one of the victims was threatened by the men with silver bars and made to hand over his blue iPhone 5C. It is believed that the suspects then ran off down the lane towards Stanshawes Drive and Westerleigh Road.

The first suspect is described as a white man wearing a grey hooded top, grey jogging bottoms and had an orange and black checked scarf across his face.

The second suspect is described as a white man wearing a black hooded top, baggy blue jeans and had long greasy hair.

At this time, police are linking the two offences.

Anyone with information on either incident is asked to contact DC Phil Croll on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be left anonymously.

money to fund redevelopments in Coalpit Heath and Iron Acton Merlin Housing Society has been awarded £2.4m of funding from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) to build 84 homes in South Gloucestershire over the next three years.

The money is part of the HCA’s Affordable Homes Programme which saw £886m given out to building projects across the country. Merlin is going to use the funding to help finance the redevelopment of nine non-traditional housing sites in Coalpit Heath, Iron Acton and Little Stoke, plus a former older person’s housing scheme in Filton.

Head of Development Michelle Thomas said: “We’re delighted to receive this money from the HCA. We already own these sites and have detailed redevelopment plans in place for them.

“We’ve chosen the non-traditional sites as the properties on them are in real need of improvement. They are suffering from structural defects and have become very expensive to heat for those living there.

“This money will help us replace all these properties with modern, affordable, energy efficient homes.”

Now Merlin’s been successful with its first bid, it hopes to be able to secure grant funding for other new developments in future.

13 Residents’ upset at compound plan for Coalpit Heath green

HOUSEHOLDERS in Coalpit Heath are upset that a green in front of their homes will be occupied by a site office while a long-running building programme is carried out.

Residents of private houses in Willow Way said the green will be out of use for many months while Merlin Housing Society redevelops damp and draughty houses in neighbouring streets.

The pre-cast reinforced concrete homes will be replaced with energy efficient properties as part of a multi-million pound project by the housing association.

But while accepting the work is necessary, residents questioned the use of the green, which they say is used by local children as a playground and kick-about area.

They urged Merlin to find another area for the compound so the green can continue to be enjoyed and met with the society to discuss the matter.

Resident Mick Bony, speaking on behalf of his neighbours, said householders were particularly upset that the green could be surrounded by hoardings for up to two years.

He said: “We could be looking out from our front room windows every day to the view of hoardings that are ten metres away and about 8ft high.”

Mr Bony claimed residents had not agreed to any suggestions made by Merlin to limit the effect of the compound.

But a Merlin spokesman said most residents were happy with plans to replace some hoardings with a fence.

He said: “Over the next two years we are going to be building 80 much-needed affordable homes across several sites in Coalpit Heath.

“We need a central site office for all of this work and using the grassed area off Willow Way was the only suitable option following discussions with the local authority, parish council and residents.

“It also means it will be safer for members of the public to visit the site office as they won’t have to enter the actual development

He said Merlin had kept residents informed of its plans and the meeting was held to discuss concerns about the site office.

He said: “We agreed some changes with residents at the meeting, including changing the hoardings on the Willow Way

side of the office to a traditional wooden fence, which most of the residents were happy with.

“Once all the work has finished we will also be working with local residents to improve the appearance of the grassed area as part of our legacy to the village from this project.”

Uptake strong at yate riverside leisure scheme Child snatch fears mount

Knock on effect on main shopping centre Yate’s new leisure complex, Yate Riverside, is reporting over 70% of the units have been taken before building even starts.

It has already been announced that the cinema operator Cineworld will anchor the scheme but there has been a lot of interest from shop and restaurant chains for the remaining units with a further six parties either in the process of or completing legal contracts.

Updating Yate Town Council on the project, Mark Hull, Group Property Controller for Crestbridge said: “We knew this scheme would be popular but not to this extent.

The cinema operator Cineworld signed-up almost immediately after planning permission was secured and since then there has been a steady flow to our front door. Unfortunately it looks as though we won’t be able to accommodate all the interested parties but in some ways that is a good thing.

“As a result of this interest, we have received offers from some common high street names interested in coming to the main shopping centre.

Early next year we will be submitting plans to reconfigure some of West Walk to create a new unit that is currently attracting interest from two major high street names. It is encouraging that our vacancy rate is roughly half the national average and there is scope to reduce this further over the next few months.”

POLICE are appealing for information following three incidents in South Gloucestershire of schoolchildren being asked by a man in a car if they wanted a lift.

Officers say none of the children interacted with the suspect and the driver left the scene without committing a crime.

The incidents happened on Wednesday December 10 at Redwick Road in Pilning at 7.30am, in Greenways Road in Yate at 12.45pm and in Thornbury Road, Thornbury at 4.15pm. In each case a man in a small blue hatchback, stopped and asked the children if he could give them a lift.

News from Winterbourne Down WI Members and guests of our Group were greeted with a glass of mulled wine and a free raffle ticket. We had the business part of the meeting followed by entertainment from Senior Moments. They gave us a type of Quiz whereby 100 people had been asked a question relating to Christmas and we had to guess the correct answer. For example “What did people do after lunch on Christmas Day?” In teams we had to guess the most appropriate answer. It was a very light hearted competition with a lot of laughs and thoroughly enjoyed by all present. The scores were kept with precision by a helper and the winning team were given a small prize. We gave Senior Moments a donation to their Charity - BUST. This is a local Charity started at Frenchay Hospital for Breast Cancer and now continues at Southmead Hospital. After the entertainment we had a splendid buffet provided by our members and then 10 festive flower arrangements and home-made Christmas ginger biscuits were raffled so many party goers went home with a happy smile.

News from Coalpit Heath WI The aroma of mulled wine greeted Coalpit Heath WI at their December meeting. St Saviours Church Hall looked so festive with many members also turning up in their Christmas jumpers.

Jacquie Dean demonstrated 4 Christmas craft designs and all members were then invited to try their hand – most of us successfully made candy cane mice, however the angels turned out to be a tad more difficult – we had a few angels with no arms (let alone wings). However the evening was a great success with 2 new members joining and 11 visitors all enjoying a glass of mulled wine and mince pies. The Christmas hamper was won by Debbie Reynolds.

At the meeting, our new president Catherine Proudlove gave a reminder about the Carol Service on 17th December at St Saviours Church where a collection was made for the Golden Appeal for a portable scanner for A & E. The Rising Sun was the venue

for the Christmas evening meal with 26 members enjoying a traditional menu. The staff made us feel very welcome and a good time was had by all.

Everyone will be welcome at our January 7th meeting, where a celebration of all things Scottish will be held. Members are challenged to wear tartan and enter the Great Scottish Bake Off as well as taking part in some curling and a quiz.

Don’t forget our skittles night on Friday 9th January at the Rising Sun. You don’t have to have played before, but you may discover a talent that you never knew you had.

News from the Frampton Cotterell WI With an eventful festive programme in progress as we go to press, here’s just a reminder of some of the things in store for Frampton Cotterell WI members in the New Year.

On the 27th January, there will be a talk on the History and Work of St.Peter’s Hospice given

by Petra Littlefair. This will start at 7.45pm at St.Peter’s Hall (next to Crossbow House).

Other events coming up in the New Year include news on an inspiring community project

January, 2015 in Kenya on 24th February and talks on pearls and pearl jewellery on 24th March (both also at St.Peter’s Hall). The Frampton WI Annual Dinner will again be held at Chipping Sodbury Golf Club on 3rd February after and enjoyable night out there last year. There are also a number of interesting Avon Federation events coming up in early 2015, including an Evening with Michael Portillo and a Craft Dabble Day – more information available at our meetings.

Potential new members are always welcome. We meet at St Peter’s Hall on School Road at 7.45pm, on the 4th Tuesday of the month. Visitors are charged at £2.50 and any new members join by paying the 2015 membership fee which also includes a subscription to WI Life magazine.

A regular reminder that next year is the Centenary of the formation of the WI in 1915 and so there will be various celebrations and events taking place both nationally and locally to commemorate this important WI birthday – look out for details for these and other meetings, social events etc. on our Facebook page – just search FramptonCottWI.

Survey help for carers Patients attending Frome Valley Medical Centre are to get the chance to participate in a survey aimed at helping people who are carers.

The centre, with the support of the Patient Participation Group, is carrying out a survey regarding patient communication needs and trying to identify carers.

Jane Andrews from the Patient Participation Group said; “The majority of people who care for others do not realise that there is support in the community for them and we want to help if we can. If you are one of our patients and are a carer please help us by completing the survey either at the surgery or online”.

Members of the Patient Participation Group will be at the surgery on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings for three weeks from the 12th January 2015 carrying out the survey.

The purpose of the Patient Participation Group (PPG), which includes the online Patient Representation Group (PRG), is to: ▪ encourage and channel feedback from patients and carers and to use this to inform the practice so as to improve overall services ▪ provide a focus for patients to channel ideas or suggestions to the practice ▪ act as a representative group to influence healthcare provided through Frome Valley Medical Centre ▪ improve communications between patients / carers and the practice ▪ organise health promotion campaigns

Police hunt paintstripper attacker Police are searching for a man who is responsible for a series of incidents where painstripper was poured over cars.

The incidents happened on the drive of a house in Peache Road in Downend. There have been six attacks in the past 18 months.

Although the man has been caught in camera in the act, he’s not yet been identified.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to call them on 101, quoting crime reference number 115839/14.

Panto hits the boards — a year late!

A pantomime that was postponed from last year is at last set to delight audiences in the Frome Valley.

St Peter’s Players had hoped to put on the performance in February 2014. However the production had to be put on hold for year because of technical problems.

Now Cinderella is finally set to go to the ball at Winterbourne Community Centre.

Carolie Green says this production of Cinderella has all the usual characters on offer: “The ugliest ugly sisters with their delusional mother who thinks they are beautiful, poor old Baron Hardup. and Prince Charming who would not win any prizes for intelligence. Then of course there is Buttons, a very good friend to Cinderella who’d would really like to be more than a friend.

With ample free parking and a very reasonably priced bar it would be silly not to come”.

Help on offer for dyslexics Dyslexia is a condition that is estimated to affect at least one in ten people, yet it is often not understood by people. In the past, people who were dyslexic often struggled at work or school, but now there is a lot more support, backed up by equalities legislation.

Locally, Sarah Cleaver, an

have to be qualified to call yourself a psychologist.

To qualify, you need a minimum of a masters’s degree in Psychology, plus a period of supervised practice. It took me nine years in total, and I’ve been Chartered for 20 years.

I’m an Occupational Psychologist, so I specialise in adults in the working world. We are a bit like management consultants, covering leadership, training and assessing people (for recruitment or promotion). If you have a people problem at work, an ‘Occ Psych’ is likely to be able to help.

We base our recommendations on research evidence, so our advice is usually sound.

I’ve been specialising in Dyslexia assessments, and making recommendations for adjustments to make life easier for dyslexics at work. There’s a big demand; 10% of people are dyslexic, and they are now protected legally, so employers often appreciate some help with

Comic star heads for arts festival

AWARD winning comedian Jo Caulfield will be among the headline acts at the 2015 Thornbury Arts Festival.

Organisers are keen to attract more people from surrounding areas to the town’s annual festival, which will run from April 17-26 and feature a programme of music, literature, performance and visual art.

The schedule is currently being finalised but Jo Caulfield is among the early acts to be announced.

She has appeared in BBC Radio 4’s It’s That Jo Caulfield Again and Jo Caulfield’s Speakeasy, as well as being a regular guest on TV shows such as Have I Got News For You and Mock the Week.

Her time as a warm-up act for Graham Norton’s first chat show also led to her writing material for the popular host and presenter.

Among other confirmed appearances at the festival are Theatre Temoin with their production of Nobody’s Home and the five-piece gipsy jazz band Moscow Drug Club, whose infectious music will help bring the festival to a close.

The programme will also feature film, storytelling, talks and a concert by performers from the annual Thornbury children’s eisteddfod, which is run under the festival umbrella and often involves schools from the Frome Valley area.

And just days after the main festival ends, the Severn Vale Art Trail will open, giving visitors the chance to visit artists’ studios and exhibitions in a wide area around Thornbury from April 30-May 10.

Shirley Sharp, the festival’s artistic director, said the 2015 schedule had been expanded to add afternoon sessions to the traditional format of evening and lunchtime events.

She said: “At first it seemed slightly daunting to give a new image and appeal to the festival, while still retaining its amazing formula that has worked for 45 years.

Frampton Cotterell pair sentenced for drugs offences A total of 20 people, including two from Frampton Cotterell, have been sentenced for drugs offences following a two-day police operation in the Yate and Chipping Sodbury area in October.

Three teenagers who cannot be named had already been sentenced at youth and magistrates courts. The remaining 17 were sentenced on Monday December 8 at Bristol Crown Court.

The arrests were made during operation Rebus, a covert and largescale operation against drugs supply and associated crime that Avon and Somerset Police spent six months planning.

Det Inspector Dom Graham, leading the investigation said: “We welcome the sentences, which we believe send a very strong message that drugs dealing is a serious crime”.

“This was an important operation that has had a significant effect on the supply, production and use of drugs in the community, and since October the number of drugs-related and associated crimes like burglary have dropped in the Yate area. Drugs are a serious problem wherever and we are determined to do whatever we can to disrupt the system and bring offenders to justice.”

Those arrested were charged and convicted of offences including being concerned in the supply of, possession with intent, or supplying class A and B drugs.

Two men from Church Close in Frampton Cotterell were convicted.

31 year old Stephen England was given a 5 year sentence. 18 year old Jake Hill was given a 16 month suspended sentence as well as 150 hours of unpaid work and a 4 month curfew.

The following is an extract from the story ‘The Velveteen Rabbit’. The Velveteen Rabbit is reflecting on how the other toys in the nursery make him feel insignificant and is seeking advice from the wise Skin Horse.

‘The Skin Horse had lived longer in the nursery than any of the others. He was so old that his brown coat was bald in patches and showed the seams underneath, and most of the hairs in his tail had been pulled out to string bead necklaces. He was wise, for he had seen a long succession of mechanical toys arrive to boast and swagger, and by-and-by break their mainsprings and pass away, and he knew that they were only toys, and would never turn into anything else. For nursery magic is very strange and wonderful, and only those playthings that are old and wise and experienced like the Skin

“Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and a stick-out handle?”

“Real isn’t how you are made,” said the Skin Horse.

“It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.”

“Does it hurt?” asked the Rabbit.

“Sometimes,” said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. “When you are Real you don’t mind being hurt.”

“Does it happen all at once, like being wound up,” he asked, “or bit by bit?”

“It doesn’t happen all at once,” said the Skin Horse.

“You become. It takes a long time. That’s why it doesn’t happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.”’

Christmas is a time of year that brings people together. We share good times and we really go the extra mile to share good will with people. The only problem is that Christmas often leads to the post-Christmas blues, meaning that the New Year often begins with a sense of disappointment or feeling down.

The question is, how do you keep that Christmas fire burning as we head into a new year? I believe it is all about friendships.

Friendships come with ups and downs, good friends can be the best part of who we are, but they can also be some of the most infuriating people in our lives.

But deep friendships don’t just happen, we have to deliberately make them happen by travelling with people, sharing our lives together and building on each other’s strengths. When we do this, life is more fun, people get blessed and people (including ourselves) begin to discover what it really means to feel ‘REAL’.

My challenge to you for 2015 is to find broken people and make friends with them.

Broken people often feel unlovable, but just because someone’s broken doesn’t mean they can’t be loved. And loved people are never ugly, apart from by those who don’t understand.

The rise of the internet stars

Holly Sawyer is a Sixth Form student at WIA and aspiring journalist. Alongside studying for her A levels, Bristol-born Holly has a passion for sharing news and blogging. At the tender age of 17 she is new to the journalism world, but has certainly put her foot in the door. Holly has her own blog, runs an independent student magazine and writes for a popular online website which helps those wondering about University. Holly enjoys filmmaking, writing and aspires to work in news broadcasting.

very morning, without fail, I groggily drag myself out of bed, and reach for my phone. After scrolling endlessly through Twitter, I open an app that many parents assume only contains cat videos and ‘fail’ compilations.

YouTube.: After its launch in 2005, YouTube has not only provided a global audience with their daily fix of humour, it is now offering job opportunities. Any parent reading this is most likely unaware of such internet sensations as Zoella, PewDiePie and Tyler Oakley. But to an overwhelming majority of teenagers and internet consumers, these names are just as well known as Russell Brand and Boris Johnson.

With a global audience of over 6 million, Zoella, in the real world known as Zoe Sugg, is a completely normal 24 year old from Wiltshire.

But in the last year, her subscriber count has grown incredibly, she has her debut novel out ‘Girl Online’ which has already broken records, and has attended several specialist YouTube events.

To you or I, this sounds like an incredible feat for someone who simply films themselves passing over some helpful fashion tips or giving general advice.

Of course, Zoella isn’t the only YouTube star who has made it big in the ‘real’ world. BBC Radio 1 has designated a slot to YouTubers Dan and Phil, again regular British guys who started off setting up a tripod in their bedrooms.

Regular audiences would probably not be aware of these ‘celebrities’. After all, they are ordinary people, and are doing something that anyone can, if they simply wanted to. But putting yourself out there is still an uncomfortable concept for many.

Despite hiding in the safety of their own homes whilst producing this content, many YouTubers are then forced out of their shell, rubbing shoulders with Hollywood stars including Brad Pitt, attending premieres on a regular basis and filming their adventures in return.

They may seem confident on camera, but many of these young celebs have confessed confidence issues and anxiety, suggesting that they aren’t too different to the young audience that tunes in every day to watch their goings on.

These young filmmakers have only just started; many are pursuing careers in television and book writing, whilst others have used the platform to express their artistic and cinematic creations. Bertie Gilbert, who is only in his teens, has already commissioned a script for a short film, chasing a job as a film director.

The fantastic thing about YouTube is the way it propels charismatic individuals to follow their dreams, giving them a handy step up through this diverse and modern platform - and earning a very decent profit through entertainment.

Maybe you should give it a go.

Sarah Presley first discovered meditation to help with health problems she was encountering. Now she’s not only set up her own successful business running classes, but is becoming a tutor for the British School of Meditation.

How did you get into meditation?

I first discovered meditation in 2000. I had been diagnosed with M.E. some time before, and by chance I read about Mantra Meditations which help you to focus your breath and mind. Over time, as my interest in meditation grew, my personal practice developed and I now meditate at least once a day, as well as creating lots of mindful moments during the day – this helps me to feel really calm, focused and centred which gives huge benefits to my health and wellbeing. I am pleased to say I now enjoy optimum health, which has inspired me to help others with their health, and since 2002 I have worked as a holistic therapist and teacher helping to empower individuals with both their personal and professional development.

What is so special about meditation?

Over the last 20+ years, there has been much research into the health benefits of meditation.

We now know that the brain of meditators contain more grey matter (brain tissue responsible

for high-level information processing) which impacts attention, body awareness and emotional response. We also know meditation can help with our metabolism, heart rate, respiration and brain chemistry, as well as chronic pain. When we are calm, we do not produce as much adrenaline or cortisol (the stress hormone), so our immune system is able to remain strong too. But most importantly, meditation can help with stress and anxiety, the main contributors to many health conditions, by shifting the brain activity. Brain waves in the stress-prone right frontal cortex move to the calmer left frontal cortex. This mental shift decreases the negative effects of stress, mild depression and anxiety.

How long have you been running classes? How have they been received?

Since achieving my accredited Meditation Teacher qualification with the British School of Meditation in 2013, I have found my meditation classes to be really popular - I have trained and supported over 100 people who are beginners to meditation, both in groups and on individual 1-to-1 basis. Plus I also run Developmental and Advanced groups to help to continue to support individuals who want to maintain and deepen their practice. These groups are run from The Greenfield Centre in Winterbourne, as well as from my work room in Winterbourne Down. I have also spent a year teaching meditation in a school to children with medical, social and complex health issues and I have been amazed at their response and acceptance of meditation techniques.

What’s the best thing about running the classes?

Most people come along

expecting that it will be impossible for them to switch off the constant narrative in their minds to be able to meditate.

The look of relief on their faces comes during the first class - it’s a lovely thing to see. I’ve yet to meet anyone who can’t meditate!

And the worst?!!

There honestly isn’t anything!

Modern life seems to be lived at a frantic pace - is there a place for meditation?!

I think meditation is the perfect antidote to the frantic pace! I refer to meditation as “making friends with the chatty mind” as it is, in effect, brain training. This can lead to a positive mental state, and an improved focus of mind which can lead to better concentration. This enhances our capacity for retaining new information and offers us excellent memory power, as well as new levels of creative thinking. It is no wonder that leading organisations, such as Apple, Google, Nike and also the Bank of England are providing

What plans do you have for 2015?

Earlier this year, I was extremely honoured to be approached by the British School of Meditation to train as one of their tutors, and open up a South West training centre to be based in Bristol. This means I will now be teaching students who wish to become Meditation Teachers with a high level qualification which is accredited by Apt awards, and recognised nationally by the Government agency, OFQUAL. Within a couple of weeks of setting the first course dates, the course was fully booked, which means there are people who wish to meet the huge demand of bringing meditation to the home, workplace and also schools. This is an exciting time to be involved with meditation, and throughout 2015 I wish to continue to support individuals with their meditation experience, whether that is a Beginner taking their first steps, to those who wish to develop and deepen their practice, to those who are ready to branch out to become Meditation Teachers.

Tried and Failed? By Craig from the Willow Brook Clinic

H

ave you ever started a new year filled with determination and a desire to exercise? You did well, you got to the gym, pool or out on the road and you tried really hard. It went well for the first few weeks, but it didn’t last long and you soon gave up. Ever wonder why?

It may have been because of one of the more common reasons: lack of time; fatigue; low self-esteem; unrealistic goals; no support? Or was it something to do with your body and how it works?

Remember that it is impossible to become fit overnight. Too many people burn out too soon when starting exercise regimes.

Whatever exercise you aim to do, follow the simple principles below, and you have a chance of achieving your targets.

1. Build slowly, be realistic and set attainable goals each week.

2. Vary the exercise you do. Change between weight training, cardio and core exercise.

3. Rest and recuperate. Your body needs time to recover and prepare for your next session. Make sure you get enough sleep.

4. Look after your feet – wear good fitting, sensible footwear. If you have any concerns about your feet, consult a Podiatrist.

5. Remember to stretch after exercise as this will allow your muscles to recover more quickly.

6. Enhance your core/postural muscles – this takes the strain off the ‘big’ muscles and can prevent back pain, tight hamstrings and the like.

7. Keep well fed and hydrated. The body requires fuel to exercise. Proteins enhance muscle recovery, carbohydrates provide energy and fluids keep the body hydrated. A balanced diet is essential for exercising. A nutritional therapist can help with this.

8. Manage your musculo-skeletal aches and pains, get them treated before they get worse by consulting a Chiropractor or Physiotherapist.

Most importantly, listen to your body.

We are very fortunate in this area to have a great swimming pool, a selection of gyms, safe roads and footpaths. There are football clubs, running groups, netball clubs, tennis courts, ramblers and cyclists.

Good news over the future of our post offices

nce in a while it is nice to have some good news to celebrate. So I am pleased to report to readers of Frome Valley Voice that I was recently able to make an announcement in the House of Commons that will help to safeguard the future of our local post offices.

Some years ago, the previous Government decided to phase out the old-style pension books and order books that were used to pay pensions and benefits.

everyone has a bank account, the last Government created a new service called the Post Office Card Account (POCA).

This allowed people to go on collecting their money at a post office but using a plastic card and a PIN. The problem was that the contract with Post Office Limited for the card account was due to expire in March 2015.

Supporter I have always been a huge supporter of our local sub post offices and was determined to make sure that whatever arrangement was put in place at the end of this contract would be a good one for our local post offices.

In the end I was delighted to be able to negotiate a seven year contract extension for the Post Office Card Account. This means that pensioners who currently get their cash from the post office through one of these accounts will continue to

be able to do so for at least the next seven years.

We have also made sure that the transaction fee which sub-postmasters receive for making the payment is not going to be reduced.

Keeping the POCA is a key issue for sub post offices.

Apart from the handling fee that is paid, post offices also benefit from increased ‘footfall’, as people who come in to collect their money may also make some purchases from the shop or post office at the same time.

This is a vital part of keeping our post offices going.

At a time when money is tight and savings are having to be made, I am pleased to have been able to ensure that one vital local service has a brighter future than might otherwise have been the case.

Zailan’s success led him to be shortlisted for the South Glos sports awards held at the BAWA in Filton and hosted by Geoff Twentyman.

He was up for young sports person of the year and up against gymnast Claudia Fragapane who won BBC Young Sports Personality 2014.

In a separate event in Devon, Zailan was awarded with a memorial award for dedication and participation for the sport as well as his 1st place trophy for the south west region .

BMX’ing is something of a family affair, with mum Hayley being awarded 1st place for the 30+ ladies in the region, sister Lexi and dad Mike receiving 2nd places in their catagories.

On the lookout for new players Frampton Cotterell cricket club are on the lookout for new players, young and old, for the 2015 season The first XI return to a challenging looking division one after a successful 2014 campaign while the 2nd and 3rd XI are in search of honours in the 8th and 11th divisions respectively.

Pre-season net practise will take place in the sports village at the Winterbourne International Academy. Sessions commence on Sunday February 1st at 10:45 until 11:45 and will last for 10 weeks. Anyone from the age of 15 is welcome to come along.

Netballers season stays on track Frampton Cotterell Ladies Netball teams have only played one league match since the last report.

The 2nd team went into their last game of the year which is also the half way point in the 2014/15 season against Oasis.

The match was played at SBL school on 13th December and was a match if Frampton won could put them 2nd in the league and in a promotion position.

The ladies went out with determination and fight and with the positive attacking play of Lucy Jones and sharp shooting of Teresa Chadwick (player of the match) they had a very impressive 47-16 victory.

This placed Frampton 2nd Team firmly in 2nd place in Div 11, only 4 points behind Bath Cougars with Olveston 2 in 3rd place on 28 points.

Frampton’s next match is on 17th January against Olveston 2.

Frampton 1st Team went out

on 13th December against old rivals Olveston firsts, a team Frampton had faced and beaten in the previous 2 years.

Olveston started with pace and with a few new players and went into an early lead with Frampton were trailing at half time.

Vice-Captain Jess Leak gave the girls a motivating half time talk, with the focus on playing their own game and not to panic.

The ladies had an amazing 3rd quarter, goals weren’t missed and the aggressive defensive play of Amy Davidge prevented Olveston scoring many goals.

Frampton pulled away to win 43-29.

This puts Frampton firmly at the top of the table with 34 points and a game in hand, with Bath cougars on 32 and Harlequins on 26.

Frampton 1st next match is on 17th January against Imperial.

Clubman of the Year goes to promotion winning skipper Winterbourne Cricket Club have held their end of season awards dinner at The County Ground in Bristol, celebrating a summer which saw all four teams finish in the top three places in their respective leagues.

The club's batting award was shared by Jon Oakes and Del Comley whilst the bowling award was claimed by Bob Vickery.

The fourth team player of the year was veteran batsman Dave Kay. Alex Heath won the third team award, and another of the club's promising youngsters Ben Parker won the second team

honour.

George Ford was first team player of the year after a season where he finished top wicket taker in the whole of the West of England League. George received another award in recognition of this achievement at the league dinner, presented to him by former England off spinner Robert Croft.

The most important award - Clubman of the Year - went to Nick Bracey. Nick skippered the fourth team to a well deserved promotion as well as guiding the U17s to victory in the 40 over

Frampton braved the wet weather to get nearly a full list of games in throughout December.

The First team started the month with a tough game away to Brislington Cricketers. The game was a very close affair.

Frampton took the lead in the game, thanks to a Matt Simons goal, but found themselves 2-1 down mid-way through the second half. However, a 20 yard wonder strike from Mark Totterdell secured a point from the game, which was probably a fair result.

Frampton followed that point with all 3 at home to DRG Frenchay. This game was very much about the second half, which saw no less than 7 goals scored, compared to 2 in the first half. Frampton started the game well and were fully on top of their opponents, until a mis-kicked pass-back from Steve Bywater saw the ball loop over Steve Scannell in the Frampton goal in what will probably be the best own goal you’re likely to see.

Frampton didn’t lose their heads and continued to dominate the game, and got their equaliser from a fantastic overhead kick from Nathan Parker. The second half was a goal frenzy and full of end to end action. Mike Beake, put the home side 2-1 up, only to be pegged back by DRG. Then Mark Totterdell put Frampton 3-2 up, but again DRG hit straight back. As the game went

Mixed Month for Frampton Athletic on, DRG’s players were visibly tired, whilst Frampton’s fitness levels told, and further goals from Mark Totterdell and Mike Beake secured a 5-3 victory.

Frampton’s last game of 2014 saw them up against close league rivals Roman Glass St George Reserves. The pitch was very heavy following a week of rain and was only deemed fit 3 hours before kick-off. This made the game somewhat of a scrappy affair. Frampton had a number of chances in the first half, but couldn’t hit the back of the net. They went 1-0 down just 5 minutes before half time, completely against the run of play.

In the second half, Frampton again dominated possession, but couldn’t find that killer finish. That was until the 60th minute, when they finally got the equaliser they deserved. They nearly found themselves 2-1 up shortly after, but a Mike Beake penalty was saved. Frampton were then dealt a real sucker punch as Roman Glass took the lead from a stunning 20 yard free kick, put over the wall and into the top corner! A disappointing end to 2014, but still plenty to fight for in the first half of 2015!

Frampton Reserve side only had one game to play in

December, as the planned match against St Pancras was called off as St Pancras couldn’t get a side together, and the planned game against Bendix was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.

In the one game that Frampton Reserves did play in, they went down to a 2-1 defeat against high flying Bradley Stoke Town. In the reverse fixture, Frampton got hammered 11-3 by Bradley Stoke, so a 2-1 defeat could be seen as a step forward, however, a defeat is still a defeat and the lads were still disappointed and felt that they had the chance to win the game. The game did see Rob Warren play his first game since September and he marked it with a well taken goal.

Frampton’s Academy side managed to get all 3 games played and took 7 points from a possible 9. It has seen them move up to 4th in the table having gone unbeaten in the last 5 games. The Academy started the month with a 2-2 draw with Greyfriars Athletic ‘B’ and then followed that up with wins over Hanham Athletic Colts (4-0) and Seymour United ‘A’ (2-1). Liam Downer continued with his goal scoring streak, picking up 2 goals against Hanham and another against Seymour, which has put

him top of the goalscoring charts for the Academy side with a total of 7 goals.

On the social side of things, Frampton’s Christmas night out saw them head to the Bristol Bierkeller for lots of steins and the entertaining Oompah band.

This was made complete by the array of Christmas trousers that were the order of the night.

All three Frampton teams get back into the thick of things in January, with the first team facing bitter local rivals, Brimsham Green, before playing Highridge United in the quarter final of the GFA Senior Amateur cup the following week. The Reserves face a couple of tough battle in the new year, as they face Lebeq Reserves and Mendip United Reserves. It doesn’t get any easier for the Academy side either, as they face 2 of the top 3 sides in their first games back in January!

So as Frampton go into 2015, all 3 team are well positioned to mount a serious promotion challenge as pressure and expectations grow as they move into the business end of the season.

Irons battle for draw in classic game Adam Taylor reports on a breathtaking game for Iron Acton first team, and a change in management for the second team.

The 1st team had only one game in December where we hosted top of the league Talbot Knowle who had a 100% record before the game. It looked like that record would stay intact as they went 2-0 up inside 3 minutes only for goals from Anthony Herrin & Jonny Ruff to peg them back before the break.

The 2nd half saw Talbot take an early 3-2 lead but again they were pegged back by a Luke Haddow goal, 3-3 and we were looking the better side only to concede 2 goals against the run

of play, 5-3 down with 15 minutes to play and another mountain to climb.

Ross Davey then had a goal chalked out due to a dubious offside. He soon made amends with his 1st goal of the season soon after to make it 5-4 and with only 5 minutes remaining Anthony Herrin ghosted in at the far post to slot home his second and our equaliser. More chances came our way in the closing minutes but the winner eluded us in a great game to watch and a decent result for us.

The reserves had a change in management in December with Robbie Nicholls taking charge.

His first game in charge was against table topping Stapleton who ran out 4-1 winners. Next up were Nicholas Wanderers who escaped with a point from a 1-1 draw with Brad Flook getting the Acton goal. A local derby against Yate Athletic saw us lose

disappointingly 4-2 with Jonny Ruff bagging both our goals.

The 3rd team are flying high, but after a good start to the season they suffered an unexpected setback against lowly local rivals Rangeworthy with the away team running out 2-0 winners. However the next game saw them bounce back to form with a comfortable 4-0 win against Bradley Stoke ‘A’ with the

goals coming from Sam Wintle, James Press, Aaron Turner and an own goal.

The 4th team suffered a spate of cancellations had only one fixture in December against local rivals Dodington, who again suffered defeat to Warwick Andrews boys. Sam Wintle’ free-kick proving to be the match winner in a game where Conor Ravenscroft missed a penalty.

Coalpit Heath have a tough December, but remain optimistic for the season Jeremy Klinsman reports on a quiet time before the holiday season break.

During December our teams took time out to remember the football match played 100 years ago on Christmas Day between Allied and German Troops on Christmas Day in 1914. As part of an FA initiative teams across the country were encouraged to line up with their opponents before their matches on the 7th December. The club fully believe that players should be reminded of the great sacrifices their forefathers gave to ensure they play football in a free world.

Unfortunately not a great deal of football was played by the Coalpit Heath teams in December, due in part to the weather and fixtures only being played up to and including the 14th. Only one win ws recorded apart from a walkover by our Under 18’s squad in the league cup.

The Under 11’s team are still finding life tough as they adjust to 9-a-side football and their only fixture in December saw them lose to second place Thornbury Town 8-1, with Coalpit’s consolation goal coming from Ben Dennington.

The Under 12’s unbeaten start to the season came to an end with back to back losses to high flying Rockleaze. However Manager Nick Kinsman was pleased with how his team competed against a very good team and goals were scored by Adam Bailey and Alex Y Santos in the 4-2 home loss.

December also saw an abrupt end to the Under 12’s GFA cup run when taking on division leaders Mangotsfield. Although the boys gave their all, the gulf in quality was evident in an 8-0 loss.

The Under 13’s guided by Coach Kevin Eynon continue to improve and a third win of the season was obtained with a home win versus AEK Boco. A brace by Harry Harvey and goals from Coby Wesson and Jonathan Pearce secured a 4-1 win.

However Boco secured revenge the following week with a 2-0 reversal, but the squad’s coaching staff are buoyed by how the team is competing in every game.

Coalpit Heath Under 18’s line up with their opponents AEK Boco to remember the Christmas football matches played by German and British forces in the Great War. The Under 14’s unfortunately lost their only game in December with a 3-0 home reverse also against AEK Boc but the squad continue to consolidate their position in the top tier of the Avon Youth League.

December saw the Under 16’s GFA Cup dreams come to a halt with a 5-1 loss away to Bristol Central and more defeats were suffered in the league as the boys fell to a 4-1 and 3-1 defeat against Bristol United and Ashton Boys respectively.

AEK Boco were once again the victors inn the Under 18’s GFA Cup encounter, showing their quality in abundance with an 8-1 thrashing the Heath’s Under 18’s squad. What disappointed manager Ali Higgins most was the manner of how the goals against were conceded, with every one avoidable. However the team have progressed to the quarter finals of the league cup after Brislington were unable to raise a team.

Off the field saw the club raise £350.00 at the club’s Christmas Party held at the British Legion.

All those of who attended had a brilliant time with children having had a special visit by Santa himself. Thanks to the “Friends of Coalpit Heath FC” for organising such a superb party.

Frampton squander lead after conceding penalties Gordon League 29 - 20 Frampton Cotterell RFC

Frampton paid the ultimate price for giving away too many penalties after coming back to lead 20-17 midway through the second half.

On a day that started with Frampton only 1 point above Gordon League, they knew they had to start well and try to take the game away from Gordon League. Unfortunately this did not go to plan, with Frampton penalised 3-4 times in a row for being offside with the Gordon League kicker getting in to range

and kicking them over the posts.

Frampton were soon 6-3 down, but hit back with a superb try from the backs, great lines of running and hands from Isaac Stell and Sam Warring carved open the League defence, finally putting Simon Belsten over under the posts to make the scored 6-10.

They really should have kicked on from that scored, however once again needless penalties put them under pressure and Gordon League soon rolled over the Frampton line from a short lineout; 11-10 the score. They grabbed another

penalty kick just after.

Frampton came back with another Matt Lawrence penalty to make it 14-13 at half time.

Playing up the hill in the second half, Frampton knew they were in for a tough time, Gordon League once again took advantage of an offside call to make the score 17-13. But Frampton then rumbled up the pitch, forwards driving into the defence making a couple of yards at time. The referee gave Frampton a favourable offside decision. A quick tap by Josh Creed drew the last defender and put Belsten in for his second try

in the corner. Lawrence once again converting to make it 17-20.

Frampton had 10 minutes to hold out, but Gordon League got through their defence once Creed had been shown a yellow card.

Gordon League then stretched their lead to take away the losing bonus point from Frampton with a further try, final score 29-20.

Colts in 14 Try Fest Frampton’s Colts got back to winning ways in a festive fixture against visiting Bridgewater RFC. It was Bridgewater that got of to a flying start quickly, going 12 nil up in the first 10 minutes after some non-existent tackling from Frampton. With the slow start behind them, the boys scored 3 quick try’s of their own after some dominant back play. It was clear at this point that the game was set for some good running rugby.

Bridgwater then got themselves back in the match with another two well deserved try’s to take a half time lead 24 to 19.

The second half saw Frampton take control of the match appearing to score at will. Great interplay between forwards and backs plus overall dominance at the breakdown resulted in Frampton scoring a further six tries. Bridgwater though were very spirited and made numerous raids into the Frampton half. With some persistent work they went over for a well deserved try by their forward pack. The last laugh went to hooker Bullet who scored his first try of the season powering over from the half way line!

Congratulations should also go to captain Dan Spalding for getting a hat trick and a jug in. Huge congratulations also to Dan Harris, one of Frampton’s up and coming stars of the U16’s and a Bristol prospect, also going in for a try on his Colt debut.

Frampton were just too strong and ran out winners 55:31, with a performance and scoreline that they have been threatening for a while.
