School inspector calls for parents’ support for academy action plan AN OFSTED inspector said the support of parents was needed for action required to improve standards at Winterbourne International Academy. James Sage, from the education watchdog, said students also had to be involved in developing more positive attitudes to learning. Mr Sage was at the academy (WIA) to monitor progress after a report in the spring assessed the school as requiring improvement. It is just one problem facing the school, which has also seen teachers go on strike and Beverley Martin, who had been in overall charge of the Ridings Federation of Academies, leave her post. Mr Sage acknowledged there had been significant changes since the spring inspection which occurred when Ms Martin herself had only been in post for a week - including among senior leaders and to the curriculum. But he said they had not yet had “sufficient impact on improving the quality
of teaching, learning and assessment” and students’ achievement had not risen quickly enough. He also said many teachers did not support changes outlined
in an action plan aimed at making improvements, or did not fully understand what they needed to do, and their trust had to be restored. More on Page 7.
