Library service could be hit as council looks to make more savings

BUDGET cuts could see the opening hours of Winterbourne library reduced and the mobile library scrapped. South Gloucestershire Council has to reduce its library service budget by ÂŁ640,000 and is about to start a public consultation on the options open to it. It could mean only having Winterbourne library open for a couple of days a week instead of four as at present. The mobile library could be vulnerable to cuts because it is expensive to keep on the road and only 101 of its 804 users rely solely on the service. If it did go, the home visit service for the elderly and housebound could provide books to vulnerable residents. But it could be possible for more parish councils, residents and community groups to get involved in running libraries,
