Countdown to family fun at Frampton Festival FINAL preparations are being made for the next Frampton Festival as an appeal is made for more volunteers to help out on the day. Large crowds are expected on the Centenary Field on July 18 for the free event, which is now in its third year.

Organisers have spent much of this year planning the big day and are keeping their fingers

crossed for good weather so everyone can make the most of the afternoon and evening.

But they need some more helpers who can give up an hour of two to make sure the event runs smoothly.

Entertainment will get under way at 2pm, with the day drawing to a close at 10pm with a fireworks display and the lighting

of a beacon.

The festival stage will also be back in use the following morning at 10.30am when Churches Together in Frampton Cotterell and Coalpit Heath hold a united festival service at 10.30am. The Bishop of Bristol and Winterbourne resident, the Right Rev Mike Hill, will be guest speaker.

Store could return to former Coalpit Heath post office site under new plans A SHOP could return to the old post office in Coalpit Heath if plans drawn up by the new owner are approved.

The former post office and general store in Church Lane closed earlier this year when postmaster Steve Davis resigned.

The premises, which included a terraced home, were sold and now Avalon Equity wants to divide up the property to separate the living accommodation from the shop space.

In documents submitted to South Gloucestershire Council, agent Adrian Forber said the plan was to change the configuration in order to increase the size of the three-bedroom cottage and reduce the retail floor area.

It would leave about 56 square metres of retail space for a potential business, which Mr Forber described as a more useful size which could still serve the community.

As previously reported in Frome Valley Voice, the Nisa shop in Woodend Road has been approved by Post Office Ltd as the new location for postal services.

Edwina Pennell, who runs the store, offered to take on the post office business and after a consultation exercise, the switch has been agreed.

Internal work at the shop to make way for the new service means it is now likely to be mid-September before the post office can open for business in its new premises.

But although the branch will offer the same range of services as previously available, there will be significantly longer opening hours, including being open on Sundays.

In total, customers have been promised 60 more hours a week in which to make use of the post office.

Campaigners urge further action over Frenchay community hospital

A COMMUNITY hospital at Frenchay is set to be debated again, with campaigners urging residents to protest at the time being taken to resolve the matter.

Members of the Save Frenchay Community Hospital Group (SFCHG) said the public health and health scrutiny commission of South Gloucestershire Council was expected to include the issue on the agenda for its July 8 meeting.

The shake-up of hospital services that led to the new Southmead Hospital being built and Frenchay Hospital being closed should also have resulted in a community hospital for the Frenchay site.

But despite approval being given for the Frenchay development and land being reserved, people are still in the dark over what will eventually be provided.

Barbara Harris, of the SFCHG, said: “The reconfiguration of hospital services for South Gloucestershire was for a new acute hospital at Southmead and a community hospital at Frenchay.

“To date, only half of our reconfiguration has been completed, despite a community hospital being an integral part of the plan.”

She said a cut in the number of beds at Southmead was conditional on there being a community hospital at Frenchay but due to the delays, patients in Southmead could now not be discharged for further care because there was no suitable provision for them.

Mrs Harris said: “We urge residents to ring, email or write to their councillors and MP to protest at the length of time this matter is taking to be resolved.”

She said they should also press for it to be referred back to Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt.

Local MP’s take battle for new motorway junction to transport secretary TWO local MPs have asked for a meeting with transport ministers to promote the campaign for a new M4 Junction on the Westerleigh Road.

Luke Hall, the Thornbury and Yate MP and Chris Skidmore, MP for Kingswood, have both been part of the ‘Gateway 2 Growth’ campaign.

They’ve written to the Transport Secretary, requesting a delegation of campaigners of the link road and junction meet with the Transport Secretary and the Department to present their case.

Luke Hall said: “With more homes being built in the area and more pressure being put on our local infrastructure, junction 18a would help cater with the increasing volume of traffic and unlock the economic potential of Yate and the surrounding areas.

I was pleased to welcome the Secretary of State for Transport to the proposed site earlier this year and will be working with him to move this forward as quickly as possible.”

Council leaders back campaign to limit release of sky lanterns A CAMPAIGN by Avon fire fighters to cut the use of Chinese-style sky lanterns has won the backing of South Gloucestershire Council.

The paper lanterns which are released into the sky are powered by a flame suspended on a wire frame and are causing increasing concern because of the risk they pose.

Midlands, which took more than 200 fire fighters to extinguish.

Kevin Pearson, Avon’s chief fire officer, asked South Gloucestershire and other councils in the area to increase controls over the use of the lanterns on council land and through the event licensing process.

He said: “The floating lanterns contain a naked flame which represents a significant fire risk to life and property

when they come down to earth.

“I’m pleased that councils in our area recognise the risks posed by sky lanterns and are taking active steps to limit their use.”The lanterns are also a danger to livestock, which could eat the metal parts accidentally chopped into feed during harvest or get caught in wire frames that have landed in fields. HM Coastguard has also reported lanterns being mistaken for distress flares at sea.

THE countdown has started for this year’s Frampton Festival, with the past six months spent on planning the popular free event.

Organisers have promised new crowd-pullers and old favourites for the festival, which will be held on the Centenary Field in Mill Lane on Saturday, July 18.

Now in its third year, it is hoped that local residents will again give their support to the event, with a packed programme of attractions promised for a funfilled family day out.

Members of the festival committee said preparations were well in advance for the big day, having started working on the project since January.

They said they wanted to ensure that popular features from the past two festivals were booked, along with some others making their debut.

Among the line-up will be Professor Panic’s Circus, fairground rides, a bungee run organised by Frampton Cotterell Rugby Club and the Bitton Archers demonstrating their skills.

Fun-filled day promised at Frampton Festival as big crowds expected on Centenary Field Visitors can enjoy tractor rides, face painting, see how dogs are trained and watch Winterbourne Border Morris dancers.

Thornbury Brass Band will open the festival at 2pm, with further musical entertainment provided by the popular Dixie Belles harmony singers, who were a big hit last year with their 1940s and 50s sounds and style.

Local band Ashton, guitarist Ruby, Before The Storm, the Shanty Men and Elevation have also been booked to entertain the crowds, while festival-goers can watch the Bear Pit Martial Arts and the Laughter in Line Dancers.

A large number of local businesses and organisations have supported the event, with many of them planning to run stalls on the day – among them

Frampton Cotterell Local History Society, WaterAid, Floral Friends of Frampton and members of Frampton Cotterell Women’s Institute.

There will also be a fireworks display at 10pm, after a parish beacon is lit, to bring the day to a close.

Ian Haddrell, one of the organising team, said: “Last year’s event, despite nearly

being cancelled due to heavy morning rain, was a great success once the sun came out in the late afternoon as local residents enjoyed the numerous attractions and live music.

“The committee would welcome a few additional helpers on the day to ensure that the festival runs smoothly and safely.

“If anyone feels they could spare an hour or two on the Saturday of the festival, please contact the festival committee.”

Children say goodbye to pre-school’s Auntie Sammi

BALLOONS were released by children to remember popular preschool assistant Sammi Bracey.

Known as Auntie Sammi to youngsters at Coalpit Heath Pre-School, the mother of two young sons died of a genetic blood disorder at the age of 45.

The children released the balloons at an event organised to say goodbye and to pay tribute to Sammi, who also leaves her husband, Geoff.

Her funeral service was held a couple of days later, when many people had to stand due to the numbers attending.

Baby food mum wins top business award BUSINESSWOMAN Jackie Novels has won a national accolade for her baby food cookery classes.

Jackie, 37, of Coalpit Heath, beat more than 1,000 entrants to take the trophy for innovation in home business at the Guardian Small Business Awards.

She set up Meals for Squeals 18 months ago after weaning her baby twins and has since taught hundreds of parents to make their own healthy infant food.

Jackie received her award from TV presenter Rick Edwards at a ceremony in London, with judges saying Meals for Squeals was “a good example of someone wanting to run a business at the same time as running a family, while also benefiting the community”.

Jackie said: “I’m over the moon to have won this award.

I think Meals for Squeals won because it revolves around the home. I’m a parent, inviting small groups of other parents into my kitchen and teaching them to make things that they

can do in their own home.

“I’m a mum cooking for my children, just like every other mum.”

Pop-up shop for Jessie May takes off in Yate Shopping Centre

MORE than £1,800 was taken in the opening week of a charity’s first pop-up shop in Yate Shopping Centre, giving a major boost to the Jessie May Trust.

A unit at 33 North Walk has been given free of charge for two months to the Kingswood-based trust, which provides nursing care at home for children and young people with life limiting conditions.

Andrew Lowrey, the shopping centre manager, said: “As a local children’s charity, we wanted to provide support for this very valuable service.”

He said the temporary shop would help raise the trust’s profile and bring in much needed cash.

The charity was founded by Chris and Philippa Purrington as a result of the death of their daughter, Jessica May, who had the genetic condition spinal muscular atrophy. She was just four-and-a-half-months-old.

Since 1996, the trust has provided its care for free in the South Gloucestershire, Bristol and north Somerset area but

Julian Withers, its head of fund raising and communications, said the shop’s first week was “fabulous”, with no-one expecting to raise so much money.

He said: “We are amazed at

everyone’s generosity and so grateful to Yate Shopping Centre for donating our first pop-up shop. “Because of the fantastic donation of the shop, we are truly able to say that 100 per cent of the money raised by it will go towards the vital work of Jessie May nurses.”

Fine after Westerleigh Road fly tipping caught on camera A MAN who dumped rubbish on Westerleigh Road, Emersons Green, has been fined £500 after admitting fly tipping.

James Meade, 36, of Portland Street, Soundwell, Bristol, was also ordered to pay £500 costs and a £50 victim surcharge by North Avon magistrates in Yate.

The court was told the rubbish, including polystyrene sheeting, bricks, wood, nails, screws and concrete dust had been dumped on the forecourt of the Black Horse Service Station.

Examination of CCTV footage showed a Vauxhall Vivero being driven onto the forecourt and after visiting the garage shop, two men opened the rear doors of the van.

They tipped material from the vehicle using a wheelbarrow, plastic sheeting and by pushing waste from the van onto the ground.

Police and South Gloucestershire Council officers went to the address of the van’s registered keeper in Soundwell and spoke to Meade, who later pleaded guilty to knowingly causing waste to be dumped. He also admitted failing to name the driver of the van at the time of the incident.

The council said there had been a number of successful prosecutions this year related to fly tipping and more cases were being prepared.

It reminded residents to only let registered waste carriers take away their rubbish otherwise they could be held liable if material was dumped illegally.

Fine for kitchen company for building regulations breach A KITCHEN company has been fined for breaching building regulations while carrying out work at a house in Coalpit Heath.

Danny Sivyer and Phillip Irwin, directors of All-in-one Kitchens Ltd of Two Mile Hill, Kingswood, pleaded guilty at North Avon Magistrates Court to three offences that concerned electrical works.

South Gloucestershire Council, which brought the prosecution, said the offences related to unsafe electrical work carried out on a house situated at The Land in 2014.

The case was heard at North Avon Magistrates Court, where fines and costs were awarded against the business of more than £2,500.

Andy Clark, the council’s building control manager, said: “We have made five prosecutions in the last 24 months for breaches of building regulations, which makes our building control team one of the most proactive in the country.”

Search is on to replace dedicated grasscutter at Coalpit Heath church VOLUNTEER grasscutter Trevor Thompson is hanging up his shears after spending 23 years in the role at St Saviour’s Church in Coalpit Heath.

Mr Thompson has taken great pride in the job, which has involved putting in about seven hours a week during the summer months.

But earlier this year he was advised by his doctor to give up and a replacement is needed.

Churchwarden Andy Brander said: “The church has been looking for a volunteer since then but so far no-one has come forward. The grass is currently being cut by a paid gardener.

“It is job that Trevor took great pride in doing for the benefit of the whole community.

“He has done a fantastic job. It is well know that St Saviour’s churchyard always looks fantastic and to have kept up such a good job for so long is brilliant, so thank you Trevor.”

Anyone interested in volunteering to help with some of the cutting or would like to contribute towards the cost of maintaining the churchyard should contact Mr Brander on 01454 882867.

MORE than £1,500 in tenants’ arrears was collected by Merlin Housing Society in its first arrears blitz day.

Staff from the South Gloucestershire-based housing association visited around 160 tenants across the district on a single day to talk to them about their arrears and find out if they needed help to pay them.

The exercise was part of efforts by Merlin to reduce arrears, which cut the amount owed to it by more than £275,000 in the last year.

In March 2014, arrears were at 2.03 per cent of total rent but a year later they had dropped 1.45 per cent.

Now they are at just 1.3 per cent, the lowest ever level for Merlin, putting the society in the best performing quarter of all UK housing associations for arrears.

Income management team leader, Marcelle Targett, said of the 57 tenants spoken to, 41 made arrangements to repay their arrears.

Many of those who were not in when the team called have also contacted Merlin to discuss their arrears.

Kelly Webster, Merlin’s head of income management, said: “Collecting rent is an important part of our business and allows us to provide all the services we offer, repair and improve homes and build new properties.

“We’re committed to supporting customers wherever we can to pay their rent by helping them manage their money and making sure they get the right benefits and advice.”

MEMBERS of the Actonians drama group brushed up their directing skills during a workshop with actor Mark McGann.

One of the four McGann actor brothers, he shared his knowledge and expertise with the team during the full-day event.

The Iron Acton amateur dramatic group said the workshop left them “exhausted but enthused”

by the end of the day, having been given an insight into how to improve as directors.

The workshop was the second to have been arranged by the Actonians, following on from one on acting skills that was led by local actor Mark Danbury.

Mr Danbury is due to run a second workshop in September.

Students publish alternative prospectus for potential sixth formers SIXTH formers at Winterbourne International Academy have produced an alternative prospectus for pupils considering post-16 education at the school.

The five students wrote and designed the document with support and advice from Rob Phillips, head of marketing and communications at the Ridings’ Federation of Academies, and Allan Finnie, studio manager at Pace Print in Clevedon.

Their prospectus includes information about life in the sixth form and tips for any prospective post-16 student on matters such as revision, budgeting and preparing for their first day.

The students - Rachel Hickey, Chloe Yuen, Holly Sawyer, Tily Brogan and Elliana Saladino – worked on the prospectus while also preparing for and completing AS and A-level exams.

Mr Finnie said: “I thought the students were brilliant. It was great to hear them coming up with so many ideas and bringing such enthusiasm to the project.”

Mr Phillips said: “The students impressed me throughout the process with their

ideas and the understanding of the project.

“The last Ofsted report highlighted our sixth form’s commitment to helping students shape the next stages of their

education and employment and this experience will prove invaluable to them.

“One of the students has already gone on to write for a local magazine, while another

has committed to editing the student magazine next year. All five have a bright future ahead of them.”

More tenants sign up for new Yate Riverside scheme TWO more tenants have signed up for units at Yate Riverside, bringing occupancy of the new development to 70 per cent.

Frankie & Benny’s restaurant and Pets at Home are the latest companies to take space at the cinema-led scheme in Link Road.

The Italian-American restaurant will be one of six eating establishments located next to the Cineworld six-screen cinema complex, with announcements already made that Prezzo and Dean’s Diner have committed to the scheme.

Pets at Home will be the second of three new retailers on the site and follows fashion chain Next in deciding to move to Yate.

Yate Riverside is an extension to the main Yate Shopping Centre and the first of the new businesses are due to open in December.

Shopping centre manager, Andy Lowrey, said: “These are two more high quality names to add to the ever-growing list of retailers and restaurants represented and interested in coming to Yate.

“The interest shown in the new Riverside development is very encouraging and we are still talking to new tenants interested in taking space in the town.

“Construction is on schedule to hand over the restaurant units to tenants in September and the cinema in December for fitting out,

Volunteers needed to tackle weeds problem

PEOPLE are being asked to help out to root out a problem that is threatening native plants in the area. Himalayan Balsam may look harmless, but as Phil Handy tells us, it’s turning into a real menace.

Himalayan Balsam, which grows along the River Frome, is a non-native invasive species which out-competes native plants. It grows in large clumps along river banks which can lead to blocked water flow during the summer months or to erosion when it dies back and leaves bare soil in winter.

The Avon Invasive Weeds Forum (AIWF) is an independent group who are aiming to raise the awareness of non-native invasive species along the Avon and its tributaries and to work with other organisations to attempt to control them. They have organised a day of action in Frampton Cotterell on 9th July, meeting at 10:30am near to The Globe on Church Road.

Neil Green of AIWF says: “Local volunteers are welcome to come along and help. The Balsam grows along the river banks together with large clumps of nettles so wear long sleeves, long trousers, sturdy shoes and a pair of gloves!”

Eliminating Himalayan Balsam completely requires repeated visits to stop new plants growing from seed and Frampton Cotterell Village Action are keen to set up a local group who can continue with the work initiated by AIWF. Highest grade given to day nursery by Ofsted inspector A DAY nursery has been judged as outstanding in its latest inspection by Ofsted – an improvement on its previous rating.

Cornerways in Westerleigh went up from an assessment of good to the highest level awarded by the education watchdog.

Inspector Jennifer Cutler said children at the nursery were happy and well cared for, having strong relationships with the staff.

Well qualified staff provided a “rich and varied” educational programme and had a good understanding of how children learned.

Ms Cutler said in her report: “This means that teaching is very strong and children make excellent progress in communication skills.”

She said the youngsters also made excellent progress in learning and development while, as

a result of practical activities, they learnt to be independent, to think critically and creatively and to further their language skills.

Ms Cutler said: “Exciting resources outside enable the children to develop physical and personal skills and promote effective learning.

Children receive an excellent preparation for the next step in their education.

“The nursery’s self-evaluation, with some contributions from most parents, is very well focused and effective in driving improvements.”

Sue Harrison, who runs the nursery in the Broad Lane, said: “We are very pleased to have been graded outstanding. Just seven per cent of early years provision meets this grade, so we are extremely proud.”

East meets West as Singapore students visit Winterbourne academy A GROUP of 35 students from a school in Singapore had the chance to see what education in the UK was like when they visited Winterbourne International Academy.

The pupils from the Crescent Girls’ School, accompanied by four teachers, spent a day at the

academy as part of a week-long literary tour of Britain.

They were shown around by year ten students and taken to see lessons, while the academy’s own pupils discovered what it was like to be a student in Singapore.

Academy teacher Nicholas

Trowbridge said Singapore currently topped the global education rankings and the visit allowed both schools to learn from each other.

He said “Our Singaporean guests were a great resource and many of our students and teachers took the opportunity to

ask them about their curriculum and educational experiences.”

Visiting teacher, Chan Xiao Yi, said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity for our students to experience literature overseas and English culture.”

Residents given say on community action group’s support for next year TENANTS of Merlin Housing Society in the Frome Valley have the chance to suggest schemes for cash support.

The housing association’s community action group (CAG) for the area is about to hold its annual general meeting and wants to hear from anyone with ideas about projects or groups that would benefit from financial help.

Merlin has four CAGs, each covering a different part of South Gloucestershire and comprising residents who receive money from the society to fund improvements and projects in their locality. They also work with area offices to improve services provided.

The Frome Valley CAG will meet from 7pm-9pm on Thursday, July 9, in Coalpit Heath Village Hall, Badminton Road.

Residents attending will hear a review of the past year and find out which schemes were helped in that time. Next year the group will have £15,000 available to it and the group will work with fellow residents to investigate how best to use the money.

Quality award served up to Yate chippy A YATE chippy has scooped a quality award from the trade body of the fish and chip industry.

Pisces, in Station Road, received the accolade from the 102-yearold National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), which represents the nation’s chip shops.

It runs the scheme to help raise standards and to reward and promote shops that provide good quality products and high standards of hygiene.

The award for Pisces, run by Julia Holbrook, will be valid for two years, when it will be re-assessed.

To qualify for the award, each shop is inspected and assessed on presentation, hygiene and cleanliness, staff training, equipment, frying and sales skills and the quality of the food provided.

Richard Wardell, of the NFFF, said: “Pisces clearly takes pride in where it sources its fish and potatoes. Achieving the quality award provides reassurance to customers that they are being served cooked food using high-quality ingredients.”

Frampton girl plans jungle expedition for meningitis charity A WOMAN who survived meningitis is planning epic trip to raise money for charity.

Bronwen Ward is heading to the Sumatran jungle in Indonesia to raise money for Meningitis NOW. Bronwen told Frome Valley Voice; “I had meningitis myself when I was a baby, thankfully I was extremely lucky to have survived, and also to have survived without the loss of any limbs. This however isn’t always the outcome for a lot of people who suffer this horrible disease and want to do everything I can to help raise awareness and raise money in order for more people to survive”.

Oscars gets good rating from education inspector AN education inspector has given a high rating to the Oscars preschool in Frampton Cotterell.

Jennifer Cutler from Ofsted assessed the facility as good overall but said its contribution to the well-being of children was outstanding.

Oscars - the Out of School Club and Recreation Scheme – has been running for 23 years, operating from a building within the grounds of Frampton Cotterell Primary School.

It is open every weekday in term time, while a holiday scheme also runs five days a week.

Ms Cutler said the pre-school staff and committee worked closely to improve facilities for the children and its environment and resources were excellent.

She said: “The manager is very well organised and committed to driving improvement. Care for the children is outstanding.

Relationships are strong and staff always meet children’s individual care needs extremely well.”

She said there were good links with the school and strong relationships with parents of the youngsters.

Staff were also praised for making good use of outside spaces to promote children’s physical development and social skills.

Floral Friends looking for blooming success in annual challenge VOLUNTEERS who have been brightening up Frampton Cotterell with floral displays are hoping their efforts will earn them a top award.

The Floral Friends of Frampton have planted up containers and sown wildflower seeds around the village as part of the annual Britain in Bloom challenge.

Royal Horticultural Society judges are due to visit on July 8 to cast their eyes over the displays, which have been entered in the Pennant Award category Lena Clarke, secretary of the Floral Friends, said during the morning the judges would view a display of photographs at the Brockeridge Centre before touring the village to see various sites.

TELECOMS giant BT will give a presentation on broadband at the next Frome Vale Area Forum meeting.

The meeting on Thursday, July 9, will also hear about food and waste recycling and consider the allocation of community grants.

All about the Shadow

Powder tends to be more flattering on older skin as it smooth’s out the creases rather than sitting in them like cream.

This is the time to investing more on an eye shadow as the better quality ones tend to have more emollients, preventing colour going blotchy and they are more finely milled, meaning they go on better.

Cream is more effortless and the texture tends to be easier to apply. Use your finger to gently pat on a sheer wash of colour onto your lids. Try a cream pencil which you can use around the eye and then smudge with your fingers.

Do you stick to the same colour? Most people are intimidated by colour, especially anything beyond the lash line.

Muted colours like midnight blue, khaki are great for the day, whilst bolder colours can be kept for the night.

Summer entertainment at Winterbourne medieval barn VISITORS to Winterbourne’s medieval barn will be able to enjoy Mozart and Shakespeare at the next two events in its summer programme.

Tessitoura Opera will perform Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte in the barn at 7.30pm on Saturday, July 11, with the grounds open for two hours before the performance for anyone who wants to take a picnic.

Bring on the bands at South Gloucestershire Show MORE than 30 bands will entertain the crowds at the South Gloucestershire Show, which returns next month after making its successful debut last year.

Two stages will be set up to accommodate the event’s music festival, with a mix of local performers aimed at providing music for all tastes – from rock and pop to classical and choir.

Among the line-up on the Gem and Bounders stages will be Ragged Union, Souled Out, Bombshell, the Wild West Country Band, We Merry Kings and Foo Fighters tribute band Pity the Foo. DJ Simon Lloyd will also be at the show on both days of the event. He is the house DJ for GLR local radio, has worked alongside the likes of Fatboy Slim and Noel Edmonds and has just returned from the Glastonbury Festival.

Elsewhere on the showground, organisers said they had been inundated with requests for space in the craft marquee.

There will also be 250 classic cars and bikes on show and a range of local produce for sale in a festival of food.

A cycle show, fishing, shooting and golf will also be featured, with camel racing and Joseph Pearce’s fire and stunt spectacular also set to attract the crowds.

The show, billed as the biggest event of its kind in South Gloucestershire, runs on August 1 and 2 and will bring in thousands of visitors to the Windmill Fisheries showground, Westerleigh Road.

Sheepdogs let loose in Sodbury; 28 toy dogs are going to be hiding as part of the Sodbury Sheepdog Search from 11 July until September 6. Head to the Tourist Information Centre for a trail map.

The photographs were taken at the BSpoke16 Artist, Makers and Designers Fair which took place at Emersons Green Village Hall.

Artist and organiser Catherine Williams, who lives in Emersons Green, said: “We are really thrilled to report the huge success of our second fair.

“Our wonderful exhibitors arrived and set up their displays.

It looked fantastic, such an array of quality products.

“The doors opened at 10am

and from that point the crowds came and there was a steady flow of people throughout the day.

The feedback was fantastic, so many comments about how great it was to see so many quality items under one roof.”

The event was such a success a date for another fair has been booked in time for Christmas. It will take place on November 15 and already half the places for exhibitors have been taken.

Catherine said: “We would like to thank our supporters who helped make the day hugely successful.”

Bspoke16 was set up to showcase the talents of local artists including jewellers, printmakers, glass makers, furniture makers and textile artists. The first fair took place last November.

Review

The Court Players production of “Cash On Delivery”

by Michael Cooney Memorial Hall Rangeworthy, 11th to 13th June 2015.

Review by Lyn Bedford IT takes a brave director and cast to tackle Michael Cooney’s farce, which includes triple entendres, plus elements of farce, slapstick and even large chunks of bawdy physical humour, in the style of the Carry On films! Layers of confusion are created upon encountering lies, talking at cross purposes, mistaken identities, cross-dressing, undressing, dead bodies, mis-timings, lots of alcohol and even an exploding washing machine ~ all competing with a tale of benefit fraud.

The cast coped well with a fiendishly constructed script, apart from one or two lapses of memory: understandable with such convoluted text! Once slow cueing and nerves dissipated, events unfolded at a frenetic pace. It was good to spot some new faces, but experience shone through, particularly in the case of central fraudster

Eric Swann, played by David Churchley, and Bryan Tufnell as Norman Bassett, while Mike McDonald’s Benefits Inspector: Mr Jenkins was a tour de force, with his drunken rant being a particular high spot of the evening. Richard Lewis (Uncle George) obviously enjoyed every second of his physical comedy, as did the audience, while great support was given by Lorraine Millward as the long suffering wife, Sarah Generalski-Sparling as a bereavement counsellor and Eleanor Trapp’s scary Ms Cowper, who although most definitely used to being in charge, was not afraid to eventually drop her guard and enter into the spirit of the piece!

Picture shows some of the cast from “Cash on Delivery” and then his equally abrupt reincarnation! Callum Bird seemed a little young to be cast as a Doctor, although he made a brave attempt at balancing the chaotic situation with a certain amount of gravitas. Props were excellent, while the set was realistic and well furnished, with a bright and cheerful lighting plot, but sound effects were loudly intrusive. Overall, a hugely enjoyable romp and fine

example of farce! I commend those on stage and behind the scenes; all of whom I imagine needed a long lie down in a darkened room to recover from the rigours of such physical theatre!

The Court Players next production is “Blood Brothers” (Play version) by Willy Russell and will be performed on 15th to 17th October again at The Memorial Hall, Rangeworthy.

Wessex had all been invited to The Royal Albert Hall which made the event even more special.

The morning Speaker was Lucy Worsley a Curator of Historic Houses which included The Tower of London amongst others. In the afternoon Tanni Grey-Thompson spoke about her life from her love and success in athletics to now being a Member of the House of Lords.

Helena Morrissey spoke about her business career and the importance of promoting women to Board level. Despite being a successful business woman she also had nine children.

In the evening, our WI meeting was held in the garden of our President, Sally Lloyd. We all enjoyed a pot luck supper sitting in glorious summer sunshine.

We look forward to our celebration Strawberry Cream Tea on Saturday 20th June 2- 4pm in the Church Hall, to which you are invited.

Frampton Cotterell WI IN mid June, over 20 of our members booked in for a summer social evening at The Globe in Frampton Cotterell.

As well as a catch up, we enjoyed an Italian-themed meal which included dishes such as lasagne and Mediterranean baked salmon and also deserts including panna cotta and tiramisu. The perfect company and lovely food.

It’s been a busy month, as on the 23rd June members met up again for their monthly meeting at St Peters Hall for an Indoor games evening followed by refreshments.

July’s talk will be on the 28th at 7.45pm at Crossbow House. We’re looking forward to Commander Philip Unwin telling us all about The SS Great Britain – “the Concorde of her day”. It will be fascinating to

Frampton Cotterell WI will be attending the Frampton Festival on the 18th July with our WI cake stand, so do look out for us there and do feel free to come and see what our members have been creating for the show.

Coalpit Heath WI OUR June meeting was held on Wednesday 3rd June and we had a fabulous talk by Clare Clensy regarding her life as an apprentice at the Royal School of Needlework. Clare gave an amusing insight into the day to day life of an apprentice, working 8 hour days sewing and then completing 2 to 3 hours’ worth of homework each evening. Apprentices were only allowed to take the stairs, and the school is based on the third floor of Hampton Court Palace, they were not allowed to talk during their lessons or listen to the radio. They were only allowed to write in pencil and there was no eating or drinking in the classroom. The guidelines

were very strict and Clare graduated in 2000 so not that long ago.

Clare brought wonderful examples of the work she completed during her apprenticeship, showing us examples of silk shading, tapestry, regimental embroidery and coronation gold work. The amount of detail was amazing with some pieces taking 126 hours to complete. Clare has also written a book on Silk Shading under the name Clare Hanham, even if you are not into needlework it is well worth a look.

After a break for refreshments we had the usual notices, and we do need to do some preparation for the St Saviours fete and Manor School annual fair – so lots of nice things to attend by our group.

A few of our ladies also attended a workshop on Lampshade Making at the Doddington Design School, and we all came away with gorgeous lampshades after spending time under the expert tuition of Leigh and Tracey. The studio is in a fabulous setting and the sun was shining so we had our elevenses on the veranda overlooking the fields and gardens. We all enjoyed ourselves and will be going back for courses on Roman blinds and cushions!

It was so nice to spend a few hours with no time pressures, relaxing and then coming back with a craft (that some of us who are less crafty were well chuffed with).

Official opening of nursery by ‘Wendover babies’ A CROWD of “Wendover babies” lined up to mark the official opening of the Red Bus Nursery in Downend.

They were all born in the building when it was a maternity hospital more than 35 years ago.

The group watched as Downend councillor and vice chair of South Gloucestershire Council Kathy Morris cut the ribbon to launch the new venture.

Owner Liz Hogarth, who

opened her first Red Bus Nursery in Coombe Dingle three years ago, used to live in Downend and has overseen an ambitious refurbishment of the Grade ll listed building in Downend Road.

She said: “It is a very, very proud day to see how we have been able to transform Wendover House. It is a beautiful building.

We knew it, even though it was a bit dilapidated.

“It has been a great pleasure bringing it back to life for

something that is going to link into the local community.”

The launch event included a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, with some staff in splendid costumes, while senior manager Su Walter, herself a Wendover baby, entered into the spirit by sporting a dress and even tights covered in red buses.

The nursery takes children aged from three months to five and has a total of 109 places in its nursery, kindergarten and

pre-school.

Further open days are planned for later in the year.

Call made for more volunteers to train as life savers MORE first aiders are needed by St John Ambulance in Chipping Sodbury and Yate to help support its life saving work.

The organisation’s volunteers provide first aid in the community at a variety of events, as well as working alongside the NHS in response to 999 calls.

Justin Blackett, the local volunteer manager, said: “Noone should die because they needed first aid and didn’t get it.

“We teach people first aid so they can be the difference between life and death and we’re looking for more people in our area to help us do this.

“No previous training is required - it will all be provided.

We just look for a desire to help people and the readiness to deal with situations that can be distressing.”

Mr Blackett said the first

aiders were trained to a high standard to provide treatment to patients at events such as concerts and sports fixtures, including those at local, regional and national levels.

At some of those events, volunteers have found Yatebased Chris Hares taking part to raise money for St John Ambulance.

Chris, an operations director for a marketing services provider, set himself a target to complete 20 competitive events and raise £2,000 for the charity after being diagnosed with a medical condition five years ago.

Housing association looking for nonexec directors to help meet its targets MERLIN Housing Society is looking to appoint up to three nonexecutive directors to its board.

The Chipping Sodbury-based housing association, which has more than 16,000 people living in its homes, said it currently had plans to invest in some 1,000 new properties by 2019.

Those joining the board would help the society meet its targets.

Merlin said anyone with senior level experience of leadership, finance or house development, especially in the commercial or private sector, would be able to increase their experience through being a board member.

Summer Feet –

T last a promise of sunshine! We can pack away our winter boots and thick warm socks! We can think about our summer holidays! Beach, sun and sandals! Sandals – with these feet! No way!

They carry us more than 150,000 miles in a lifetime, but we rarely give our poor, hard-worn feet any thought. That’s until the sun starts shining - and we ditch our coats and dig out our summer footwear.

So after 6 months of scrunching them into winter boots, sweating them out in trainers and squeezing them into high heels; it’s time to repay our feet with a little TLC. A seasonal makeover is an excellent way to introduce a more regular regime for looking after our feet. Think quarterly MOT for feet!

From aches and pains to smells and fungal problems – or even corns, blisters and more serious infections – foot problems are no laughing matter.

Sometimes, these foot conditions can also lead to further health difficulties, even affecting the hips, knees and back.

As ever, prevention is key.

your feet looking good. It’s the simple things - like careful foot hygiene, exercise, good footwear and inspecting our feet that will be effective. If you do find any cuts, discolouration and cracks between your toes, then early discovery makes them easier to treat.

Once you have had a summer foot makeover, keep up the maintenance and your feet will have you dancing through the seasonal changes.

Just as winter threatens hazards such as sweaty feet and confinement, summer offers its own complications for our feet. In the warmer weather, our feet swell, so make sure there is plenty of room and adjust your shoes if necessary.

Wearing sandals or flip-flops can often create ridges of hard skin or callus’ around the heels. Use a good moisturiser and buff with a pumice stone if necessary.

Flip-flops are not designed for prolonged use. They offer no support - ideal for around the pool or on the beach, but not great for a day out shopping.

Seek the help of a qualified podiatrist if you have any concerns about your feet.

Get well, stay well

Library service given top marks by thousands of users NEARLY every library user involved in a survey about the service in South Gloucestershire said they would recommend it to others.

The survey of more than 3,800 users showed 99 per cent of them would suggest to other people that they should try it out.

There was also a high rating for the standard of service provided, with 97 per cent judging it to be either very good or good – one of the best results from similar councils that run libraries.

Among aspects of the service highlighted by users were the quality of staff and the range of services provided by libraries.

For many people, libraries were important for digital services, with more than 70 per cent using library computers or accessing free wi-fi for study, work, jobseeking or using online library services.

Library staff use such surveys to make improvements. The last survey in November 2011 led to the introduction of free wi-fi and the replacement of computers. Charges to teenagers for reserving books were also removed.

Councillor Heather Goddard, chairwoman of the South Gloucestershire communities committee, said: “This is a really great endorsement of the library service and the fantastic work of all the staff who make a visit to the library so valuable.

“We also want to thank the public for engaging in this survey because it helps us understand what we are doing well and where we can make improvements.”

Sodbury Players Youth Section (SPYS) made Sodbury Players history back in April by winning the final of the Five Counties Youth Drama Festival with their production 'Still Thinking'.

The SPYS had already won the first round of the festival back in March, something which the group regularly achieve, however this is the first time SPYS have returned from the festival final with the trophy.

Youngsters take to the stage

Lib Dems pledge to fight for Yate minor injuries unit A PLEDGE has been made by Liberal Democrats on South Gloucestershire Council to try and protect Yate’s minor injuries unit.

They have responded to a decision by Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt that a minor injuries unit (MIU) should not be established at Cossham Hospital, despite a local campaign to get such a service.

In his letter to the council outlining the decision, Mr Hunt also mentioned the MIU at Yate, saying its provision had not led to a cut in demand on local accident and emergency services.

Recently there have been suggestions that minor injuries could be treated at enhanced GP surgeries rather than in dedicated units, raising concerns about the future of Yate MIU. When it opened in 2010, it was to deal with injuries such as scalds, bites, cuts and grazes, as well as sprains and minor head injuries. Staff can also treat arm, lower leg and foot injuries, including broken bones.

But there is some confusion among patients over what can be dealt with and some people turn up with conditions that could be treated by a GP or should involve a hospital visit. There have also been complaints that its X-ray facility is only open on weekdays Councillor Sue Hope (Lib Dem, Cotswold Edge) said people were worried that the Cossham decision could lead to Yate’s unit being taken away.

She said: “We’ve been clear all along that we want to see an expansion of medical services at Yate, not a cutdown.

“We will fight to protect the Yate MIU, which saves people from making a journey into the city for urgent medical treatments. It’s well used, and popular.

“Can you imagine having to fight your way through rush hour traffic to get to Southmead hospital, or taking an hour-long bus for an A&E visit, just because the local MIU had been closed?”

Warning to businesses over fake bailiffs BUSINESSES are being targeted by an increasing number of fake bailiffs threatening to recover debts they claim are owed.

A range of small and medium sized businesses - from nurseries to hotels - have been targeted by cold callers purporting to be bailiffs working on behalf of the courts and attempting to recover funds for allegedly outstanding debts.

When payment by bank transfer is refused, the caller often threatens to visit the business to recover the debt that is supposedly owed.

People running businesses have been advised of steps to take if they receive such contact, including asking for details of the debt in writing and checking with the court or originating company to confirm legitimacy.

They should establish what the debt is for and not make a rushed decision based on just one phone call.

Bailiffs are only used to collect or recover debts in certain circumstances.

Anyone receiving a suspect call should speak to the Citizens Advice Bureau or report the matter to Action Fraud via http:// www.actionfraud.police.uk or by phoning 0300 123 2040.

S a local man who has lived in the area my whole life, It is a source of immense pride to me that the people of South Gloucestershire, placed their trust in me to represent them in parliament.

I did not stand for parliament for financial gain, and at a time when trust in politics is so low, when public sector workers have had a pay freeze or 1 per cent rises in recent years, and when many of my constituents are only now starting to feel the benefits of a recovering economy, I do not think it is right to take the proposed 10% MPs pay rise.

The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) looks set to give

MPs a 10.3 per cent rise in the coming months, in defiance of the Prime Minister’s advice and that of many MPs themselves.

After the expenses scandals which shook public trust in politics so badly IPSA was created to be totally independent of parliament. As a consequence, it is impossible to refuse the pay rise outright.

What each MP decides to do with the rise is a matter for their own conscience, but I have taken the decision not to take the money for myself, but to use it to do some good in our community and help small local projects which will benefit the residents of our local area.

Raise your glasses for landmark beer festival THE countdown has started for the annual South Cotswold Beer and Music Festival, which has reached its landmark 20th anniversary.

Organised by Yate Rotary Club, the charity fundraising event takes place at the Ridings in Chipping Sodbury on July 10 and 11.

More than 100 real ales, together with cider, perry and wine, will be available, while a line-up of local bands playing a variety of music will entertain the festival-goers.

Organisers have promised the event, usually a sell-out, will be “the most memorable yet”.

Full details, including how to get tickets, are available on the festival website but the music line-up includes: Friday 6.30pm-8.30pm: Billy in the Lowground, named after a famous old bluegrass fiddle tune.

24 Hour Party promised for charity fundraiser

THE Yate Relay for Life charity has released its 24 hour programme as it celebrates their 10th Birthday.

The event is on the 4th July at Yate Outdoor Sports Centre.

Over the the last decade over £280,000 has been raised for Cancer Research UK. This year’s event will see over 250 people of all ages relay in teams for 24 hours to raise more money.

Let’s hear it for the girls at Frampton Cotterell RFC

Sainsbury’s staff help out at the Foodbank THE next collection at Sainsbury’s Emersons Green for the Resound foodbank takes place on Friday July 24, from 10am to 4pm.

Customers donated 348 kilograms of supplies to the last collection, on May 29 and Sainsbury’s staff gave their time a few days later to help the volunteers at the centre crate up the food.

Tracy Cannard, from the store, said: “We’d like to say a huge thank you to all our customers who support these collections to help people in crisis.” s

GIRLS who want to take up rugby can join some taster sessions being run by Frampton Cotterell RFC. The club is hoping to launch at least one girls’ team for the coming season and the have-a-go events will help it gauge the level of interest.

Tom Harris, the club’s junior chairman, said: “We are really keen to get this off the ground as a new venture, especially with this year seeing the Rugby World Cup on home soil.”

The club already welcomes girls when they are young, with players under 12 able to take part in mixed mini rugby alongside boys.

But from the age of 12, girls have to be in a female-only team. For those at Frampton, that has until now involved them having to switch to another club that does cater for older girls.

Mr Harris said: “Traditionally our girls have to move to another club as we haven’t been able to cater for their needs. But that is something we want to now change.”

The club said no experience was needed as coaches would teach everything young players needed to know.

It said as well as having fun, making friends and improving fitness, the girls would also learn about teamwork, respect, discipline and sportsmanship.

The taster sessions will involve touch rugby – a non-contact form of the game – and they will be open to girls from the age of ten to 18.

Melanie Goodrich, chairwoman of the club’s girls’ section, said the initial aim was to develop squads for different age groups.

The first taster event is on Sunday, July 5, at Crossbow House, Frampton, and will be followed by a second session on Sunday, July 12, both running from 10.30am to noon.

HUNDREDS of classic, kit and sports cars were on display at the Castle Combe circuit when spectators were treated to plenty of action on and off the track.

The Classic and Retro Action Day combined with the National Kit and Performance Car Show to offer a day out with drifting demos, a lunchtime cruise, free vintage bus rides around the circuit and a hot air balloons display.

Keepin races ahead in championship after Castle Combe success TWO Bristol drivers notched up successes when racing returned to Castle Combe for the Whitsun Race Day. James Keepin claimed first place in class C in the Castle Combe Saloon Car Championship, while Paul Arber won class B in the Castle Combe Sports & GT Championship.

The 1.85 mile circuit hosted racing from the three home championships, as well as action from the BRSCC Mazda MX-5 Championships and the 45-minute Dave Allan Trophy endurance race held in memory of the late Swindon based Honda test driver.

Keepin now lies fourth in the championship overall and has a 13-point lead in class C after three rounds.

NatWest T20 heads to Chipping Sodbury THE new NatWest U19 Club T20 will be coming to Chipping Sodbury Cricket Club this month.

The Ridings-based club is one of 20 teams across Gloucestershire to sign up to the event, run in association with Plumbase.

It features coloured clothing and the use of pink balls in Aussie-style Big Bash matches, with the focus on keeping teenagers involved with the sport.

As well as trying to win matches, clubs are also competing for so-called Blast Points, awarded by the away side for the best match-day experience.

The points are scored on a scale of zero to five, with the highest representing a true T20 Blast atmosphere judged to be fantastic and the lowest for a game deemed to be the same as a normal cricket match.

The Chipping Sodbury Slayers have been drawn in the South B group, with their first game away to the Bristol Buccaneers on July 16. They then meet the BWIP Warriors at the Ridings on Friday, July 31, with a 6.15pm start.

The Slayers go on to host Keynsham Hawks on Friday, August 7, before taking on the Bedminster Bashers at the

Clanage on August 14.

SUPERFIT people in the South Gloucestershre area are being encouraged to take part in a community triathlon this summer.

The event, which involves a 400 metre swim, an 18km cycle and a 5k run, takes place in Bradley Stoke on August 30.

It is being organised by Active Leisure Centres in partnership with South Gloucestershire Council and Triathlon England.

The Active Triathlon is the idea of international triathlete Akhil Viz, who has been living and training in Bradley Stoke since October 2011.

To help people get in shape for the challenge, Active Leisure is holding training sessions at its centres in the run-up to the event.

Busy Pre-Season Planned for Frampton Athletic FRAMPTON Athletic have started their pre-season training on Thursday 1st July and will be training twice a week – on Tuesday and Thursdays – throughout July.

In August, the club will drop to one training session a week – Tuesday’s – and start their pre-season friendly schedule on Saturdays throughout the month.

This will gear all 3 teams up to hit the ground running when the competitive league games start in September.

Frampton’s approach to pre-season training will be one of enjoyable fitness sessions and comprehensive ball skills.

They are hopeful to make use of at least one professional fitness coach along with some guest trainers.

Frampton will be hoping to attract new players to the club – both young and old – as they look to bolster their existing squads and give them the best opportunity to push for the title in all 3 divisions next season. The teams will be competing in the following leagues next season:First Team – Bristol Premier Combination Division One Reserves – Bristol & District League Division One ‘A’ Team – Bristol & District League Division Four There will be an increased focus throughout the coming season on developing the skills and abilities of the younger members of the squad. BH Elite Soccer throughout the season, which will see a selected few players given enhanced training focussing on technical skills, fitness and conditioning.

BH Elite Soccer is run by ex-Arsenal professional, David Hillier, Level 2 FA Coach, and Frampton’s Reserve Team Manager, Yinka Brownlow as well as physiotherapist, Bart Kowalewski.

End of season brings celebrations for Coalpit Heath youngsters IT was a strong end to the season for Coalpit Heath FC. As Jeremy Kinsman reports, there’s also been a change to the officials at the club.

Coalpit Heath FC are celebrating after the Under 12’s squad won promotion to Div 3 of the Avon Youth League when they start the new season in the Under 13’s age group.

Also our current Under 14’s team had a strong finish to their season and secured Div 1 status for at least another season.

Although now in the close season in terms of playing there are still plenty of things going on. On Saturday 13th June the club hosted a summer fete at the Manor Fields which also included the end of season presentations for our Soccertots, the under 7’s

and under 9’s.

The younger playing members enjoyed the centre piece of the afternoon watching a ‘Coaches and Dad’s’ football tournament.

It is safe to say that the best years of those taking part is firmly behind them.

The event was supported by the Badminton Arms and enabled the club to raise some much needed funds.

The club also said goodbye to its long standing Chairman Alistair Higgins and Treasurer Clare Higgins. It is not an understatement to say that in their seven years of stewardship they have transformed the club into a thriving community with twelve teams plus our soccertots section and a membership of over two hundred players.

They also secured playing facilities for our 11-a-side and 9-a-side teams at Hortham. Links were made with local businesses and ensured all teams were supplied with kits and training equipment.

Alistair really believed that the club ethos was football should be played with fun and enjoyment as the main aim for our players.

This in turn would bring its own success and results during his tenure proved his principles were right. Due to his immense

contribution to the club the committee unanimously decided to honour Alistair by making him a Vice-President and he will still be involved with the newly formed Under 21’s squad.

Sun shines on the Fram

Gary Winsor reports on play at Crossbow THE last month has seen a lot of cricket played at The Fram, the weather has not disturbed any fixtures in the first half of the season for the first time in my cricketing life.

Even more surprising though is the continued success of the first team. I am sure no one expected Frampton to sit in a promotion position just one point above local rivals Hambrook at the halfway point in the season.

Expectations are now set for a similar second half of the season to avoid the interference of the league restructuring.

In June the first team have won three, and lost only one, a heavy defeat on a bad day at the office to local rivals Hambrook, much down to the skills of overseas talent Anant Tambavekar.

Two of the wins came in nail biting fashion with a fantastic last wicket stand by Evan Botha (64*) ably supported by George Foulger earning a one wicket victory against Bristol Pakistanis (pictured).

This was followed the next week by a tense seven run win at Blagdon thanks in most part due to Tim Mason’s 60 and Hayden Botha taking four wickets.

The month ended with a handsome victory over Lodway with Ross Shorland getting his first 5 wicket haul for the club as well as contributing 37 with the bat.

The best part of the first

team’s success is the continued contribution by every member which makes our club a very enjoyable place to play cricket at the moment.

Onto the second Eleven, who have yet again had a mixed month, with two wins and two defeats. They currently sit in fourth place in the table, wins coming against St Mary Redcliffe thanks to 51* and 3 wickets for Derek ‘Dangerous’ Lee, and also against Old Bristolians, Sam Coleman scoring an unbeaten 84.

The two defeats came against Pucklechurch and Downend,

even with a five wicket haul for Sam Coleman. More consistency in the second half of the season will give the team chance of reaching a needed automatic promotion spot.

The 3rd team have had an excellent month, winning the last 3 games and only suffering one defeat against YMCA. Wins have come against Thornbury, Bradley Stoke and Portishead. Chairman Vic Cater added another 5 wicket haul to his collection against Portishead and a maiden Frampton 50 from Ian Mollison steered the team to victory

against Bradley Stoke, The third team, like the second team, sit in fourth place and are looking to press on to try to secure what would be a fantastic promotion.

In other news, we are once again hosting the Bristol & District Youth Finals Day on Sunday 26th July, where all age groups will compete from all over Bristol. This has been successfully hosted and very well supported event the last couples of years, so come and enjoy a burger and a beer whilst watching some of Bristol’s finest youth cricketers in action.

Strong first half of season for Winterbourne WITH the cricket season is already at the half way point, all four of Winterbourne’s sides are still in the hunt for honours.

The first team have already beaten the top two sides in the division, and young skipper George Ford could see his team push for promotion if they are able to improve their results against mid table sides as the second half unfolds. Veteran Jon Oakes has played some vital innings for the side in recent victories, and as the younger players in the side grow into

their roles they could prove to be a formidable combination.

The seconds are playing at their highest ever level and are acquitting themselves well. Again a mix of youth and experience, the games where they have come second have only been lost by the smallest of margins, as last week’s defeat to an experienced Cheltenham outfit again demonstrated.

The thirds had a run of narrow defeats against the top sides but are looking forward to the return fixtures later this

summer, as these will be played with home advantage. If they are able to secure maximum points during this stretch of games they won’t be too far away from a promotion spot.

The fourths are also challenging for a second successive promotion. Again it is a veteran, Rob Austen, leading the way with the run scoring, the season’s highlight so far being the century at home to Carsons.

However, this wasn’t enough to see his side to victory, in a game that went to the last over - and

saw over 500 runs scored.

Arguably the most pleasing thing for the club has been the establishment of the fifth team.

They have played every weekend so far and have only suffered one defeat.

It is hoped that they can join the Bristol & District League next season, once they have been able to find a pitch to rent. The club are open to offers of a ground share, if anyone is able to offer a solution they are welcome to contact club chairman Paul Dagger on 07785 560126.

Winterbourne CC under 19s in Twenty20 Action A STRONG Winterbourne U19s team enters T20 action later this month with home games against Long Ashton Galaxy and Brislington.

These games aren’t just normal youth cricket matches, they aim to capture the community and lead to a great social evening.

The team will be wearing coloured kit, there will be music being played throughout the game, a BBQ will be running alongside the bar and not to mention the famous WCC slush puppy machine for the youngsters.

The Winterbourne Dragons team boasts a strong 11, with many of the team playing 1st and 2nd XI cricket so they will be strong opposition for the visitors and have promised to play an entertaining brand of cricket.

Ben Slade from the club aid; “It is a great chance for you to come up to the Rec at Winterbourne CC and see some young local talent play a short, exiting Twenty20 game. With you not only being able to enjoying the thrill ride of T20 cricket, you can relax after a long week at work with a drink and a burger, what more could you want?”.

The games are on Friday 31 July and Thursday 13 August with a 6 o’clock start.

Mia’s success rolls on with place in prestigious Cup of Europe ROLLER skater Mia Botta will be heading for France in the school holidays to represent Britain in the forthcoming Cup of Europe.

Mia, 12, is a pupil at Winterbourne International Academy and a member of the Downlands Artistic Skating Club in Swindon.

She won her place in the event after doing well in recent UK and European competitions, including coming third in the 12 to 13-year-old section of the British solo dance championships.

The Cup of Europe will be contested in Dijon.

PUPILS from five local schools have joined more than 1,000 youngsters to enjoy an Olympic style day out.

Children from Frampton Cotterell C of E School, Watermore, The Manor St Michael’s and Elm Park took part in the South Gloucestershire Festival of Youth Sport.

The event is run by the South Gloucestershire PE Association and is designed to give school children aged from five to eleven the chance to take part in a range of activities from tennis and tag rugby to basketball and seated volleyball.

Over 60 schools took part and the day started with an Olympic-style opening ceremony with each school representing a different country.

The event, held at the WISE Campus in Filton, was sponsored

by Bristol Sport and Active Leisure with members from the Bristol Flyers professional basketball team and Bristol Academy Women’s Football Club supporting on the day.
