Summer traffic trouble to continue MOTORISTS in Winterbourne are set to suffer more frustrations this month as essential bridge maintenance work on the M4 keeps Beacon Lane closed.

Diversions are causing long tailback at busy times, particularly on the Old Gloucester Road. Bus routes have also been affected by the work, which is scheduled to finish by the end of the month.

Beacon Lane closure to hit traffic throughout summer A MAJOR route into and out of Winterbourne will remain closed until the end of August while repairs to a motorway bridge are carried out.

The B4057 Beacon Lane is shut to traffic – but not pedestrians or cyclists – so contractors for Highways England can work on the bridge that carries the M4 over the road.

Costing £860,000, the scheme is necessary due to water damage caused in recent years and involves replacing the bridge deck.

Work started on July 20 and is due to be completed on Friday, August 28.

Project spokesman Chris Pope said: “We spent a long time considering the best option for undertaking the work and this included considering carefully when the scheme would cause the least disruption.

“Traffic flow data showed that the B4057 is far less busy during the school summer holidays and after close consultation with South Gloucestershire Council, which operates the road, we

agreed July and August would be the best time to complete the work.”

Mr Pope said although delays should be less than ten minutes, drivers were advised to give extra time to complete their journeys.

The work is being carried out on a scaffold platform spanning the width of Beacon Lane and the section underneath needed to be closed for the safety of road users and contractors from Skanska.

Drivers who normally use the road – many to get to and from Filton and Patchway - are being diverted via Old Gloucester Road, the B4058 along Whiteshill, Bristol Road, Winterbourne Hill and High Street. However, access remains for residents and emergency services.

First Bus services 81 and 82 are affected by the diversion, with bus stops at Bradley Bridge out of use during the closure.

Passengers have to instead use stops in Winterbourne village or the stop sited between Great Stoke Way and Old Gloucester Road.

Highways England said the repairs would prevent more costly work in the future.

In September further work will be required on the M4 itself to address the root cause of the water leakage but it will not affect Beacon Lane users.

That work is due to last for four weeks and will involve the existing central reservation being removed and a solid concrete slab cast to prevent water flowing down to the underside of the bridge.

Retirement beckons for academy’s longest serving teacher THE longest serving teacher at Winterbourne International Academy has retired after 42 years.

Phil Wightman spent his entire career at what was originally The Ridings High School before it switched to academy status.

The former Filton High School pupil was offered a post at The Ridings after spending his final teaching practice at the school in 1972.

At the start of his career he taught metalwork, engineering drawing, motor vehicle engineering and building, as well as sport.

As technology developed, he moved into computing and

in 1999 he was among a few teachers invited to lead the Government’s computer aided design and manufacturing project across the South West.

Among other responsibilities, Mr Wightman headed up a successful adult and community education centre at the school.

Since 2001, he also led a technology learning area.

In retirement he plans to pursue DIY projects, running, hill walking and travelling, as well as devoting more time to his family.

He said: “I take away many fond memories of the school, of all the excellent students I have had the pleasure to teach and the wonderful colleagues I have had the privilege to work alongside, which has made this a great school and an amazing experience and career.”

Frampton gets new homes as campaign promotes need for affordable housing SIX new affordable homes have been opened in Frampton Cotterell as the result of a link-up between Knightstone Housing and South Gloucestershire Council.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at the homes in Nightingale Close, which took place as part of the National Housing Federation’s Rural Housing Week.

The campaign aims to raise awareness of the need for more affordable housing in rural areas across the country.

Nick Medhurst, chairman of the Knightstone board, said: “There is a critical need for affordable housing in rural areas, to keep England’s villages alive.

“Building more affordable homes in rural areas like Frampton Cotterell benefits the entire community. It helps local people to remain living in the areas they’ve grown up in, often near friends and family, and it also supports local businesses.”

Councillor Ben Stokes, chairman of the council’s adults and housing committee, said: “I’m delighted that through our partnership with Knightstone we’ve been able to provide six much needed homes for families in Frampton Cotterell.”

Group battles weeds A GROUP of volunteers have tackled weeds that threatened to overrun the river bank in Frampton Cotterell.

Helped by community volunteers from Lloyds Bank and the Avon Invasive Weed Forum, they removed some of the Himalayan Balsam growing along the River Frome between St Peter’s Church and Rectory Road.

Phil Handy from Frampton Cotterell Village Action said: “It’s important that we keep Himalayan Balsam under control. Unless managed, it spreads quickly and can lead to erosion of our river banks as it dies down completely during the winter months leaving large areas of bare soil. Although it grows rapidly to more than two metres tall, it’s relatively easy to pull up and crush to prevent it setting seed”.

South America skills final beckons for top apprentice Mike ENGINEERING apprentice Mike Watson is heading for Brazil after winning a place in the UK squad for WorldSkills Sao Paulo.

Mike, 21, of Westerleigh, secured the trip after three days of intense competition at a selection trial, having already excelled in the WorldSkills UK national event.

He was one of two apprentices from GKN Aerospace in Filton to be chosen to travel to South America for what is the biggest international skills competition in the world.

It is held every two years and involves some 1,000 young people from around the globe competing for medals in more than 40 different skills.

Mike and Steven Castle were selected in the computer numerical control (CNC) milling category and since their selection last summer, have spent a further 11 months training for the final.

Mike said: “Being selected is an incredible honour and something I’ve been working

I have spent every spare minute training for the competition and I’m determined to give it my all.”

Thornbury and Yate MP Luke Hall met Mike ahead of the final to give his congratulations and wish him well.

Mr Hall said: “Mike is an inspiration to future generations of the UK’s workforce. His achievements prove that apprenticeships can lead to great opportunities and successful careers for individuals and businesses.”

WorldSkills Sao Paulo runs from August 11-16 and as well as the competition, will give Mike and his team-mates the chance to meet others to learn about and share best practice in vocational teaching.

Coalpit Heath convenience store opening date approaching THE controversial new Sainsbury’s convenience store in Coalpit Heath is expected to open for business later this month.

Independent shopkeepers had led a campaign to stop the Sainsbury’s Local from being built on the car park of the Badminton Arms on Badminton Road.

They said the store would damage their businesses and the community but planning permission was granted for the scheme last year.

Work finally started on site five months ago and the supermarket chain told Frome Valley Voice that it expected to welcome its first customers within weeks.

A spokesman for Sainsbury’s said: “The store is set to open towards the end of August.”

During the planning process, the company said the store would create local jobs and put investment into the pub.

But a number of those who opposed the development and were disappointed that it was given consent have pledged to boycott the store when it opens.

Stamp appeal support Awards for Winterbourne brings in cash for charity fighting blindness A USED stamps appeal being run for a charity that fights blindness is being well supported by people in South Gloucestershire.

Winterbourne couple Ron and Gina Pritchard are coordinators for RP Fighting Blindness and work to let more people know about the disease retinitis pigmentosa – known as RP – which leads to loss of vision and blindness.

They also help to raise money for research that is aimed at finding a treatment or cure for the 25,000 people in the UK who are affected by the condition.

The used stamp appeal has already raised £1,200 and it is hoped people will continue to support the scheme.

Stamps to be donated should be torn, or preferably cut, from

letters with the corner of the envelopes bearing them and sent to 22 Huckford Road, Winterbourne, Bristol, BS36 1EA. All those sent in will be sold to stamp dealers.

Ron and Gina also give talks to local groups about RP and any organisation interested should contact them on 01454 772927.

They said: “A big thank-you to all who have sent stamps already.

With your support we hope to make this an ongoing fundraiser for the charity.”

Meanwhile the charity is also appealing for old cars to be donated to help fund research.

It will collect the vehicle and either sell it at auction or scrap it, with the proceeds going towards its support of research into RP.

A NEW pre-school is set to open in the Manor Hall, Coalpit Heath, to replace the previous provider.

Confirmation of the arrival of the facility is yet to be given as registration by education watchdog Ofsted still has to be completed.

But if all goes to plan, Little Explorers Pre-School will be offering term-time care at the hall every weekday from early September.

The change comes after “unresolved differences” between the hall’s management committee and the now-departed Manor Hall Pre-School led to the privately-run pre-school’s contract not being renewed from this month.

But the hall trustees were keen for early years education to continue at the venue and they have welcomed the planned service to be offered by Little Explorers.

Helen Moorefield, who has been a pre-school manager for nine years, is behind the new operation and has already held a coffee morning at the hall to meet parents of potential users.

Once registration is formalised, she hopes to have another open event before the end of the month.

Ms Moorefield said: “I’ve got many years of pre-school experience and at first I plan to open on weekdays from 9am-3pm. Then I hope to introduce a breakfast club.”

The former Manor Hall Pre-School had been highly rated by Ofsted and ran at the premises for 14 years.

Operator Wendy Lacey claimed the reasons for the notice to quit were unfair and campaigners tried to keep it at the venue.

But their call for the contract termination to be withdrawn was outvoted at a special general meeting that was called at the request of parents.

Meeting pledged after M4 junction campaign goes to Westminster A CAMPAIGN for a new M4 junction has been taken to Westminster, with a meeting now set to be held with transport chiefs.

Thornbury and Yate MP Luke Hall said a junction 18a linking the motorway with the Avon ring road would slash journey times for drivers and cut congestion.

Speaking in Westminster Hall, he also said it would help boost regional and national trade by improving business connections.

Mr Hall said: “Since the building of Emersons Green, there has been a significant increase in the volume of traffic in the area.

“The A4174 between the site of the proposed junction and junction 19 of the M4 becomes particularly congested at peak times. This has had a large knock-on effect on the villages

between the Emersons Green development and junction 18.”

The MP said as a consequence, local people were dissuaded from cycling or walking and the local environment was subject to more pollution.

He said: “This proposal will significantly reduce journey times into Bristol for many of my constituents, improve access to the M4 and reduce the traffic burden on the villages that are affected by the growing population.”

Andrew Jones, parliamentary under-secretary of state at the Department for Transport, said the case made for the junction “was a very strong one” and he committed to meeting with Luke Hall and Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore on September 16 to discuss the issue further.

Flying teddies in Frampton SCORES of teddies are set to be flung from the tower of St Peter’s church this month. But children shouldn’t worry, their favourite soft toy will be wearing a parachute.

The church is organising the ‘flying teddies’ event as a fundraiser. Children are being asked to bring their favourite teddy, or small soft toy to the church on Sunday August 30. They will make their own parachute before watching as their teddy is launched from the tower.

Organisers say the best size of teddy is around 20cm high.

The workshop takes place from 12.45 - 5pm, with Monday 31 as a reserve date incase of bad weather.

Sunshine brings bumper crowds to the South Glos Show THE second South Gloucestershire Show has been declared a huge success after visitors thronged to the showground in Henfield.

Organisers say visitor numbers were “up significantly” on the inaugural show last year. The show itself was 30% bigger than 2014, and benefited from good weather over the weekend. The man behind the show, Darren Hawkins told the Voice; “we feel the show has evolved from last year and has definitely formed an identity of its own; it was very well received”.

Council staff could move to Yate under office overhaul review SOME of South Gloucestershire Council’s back office work could be switched to Yate from Kingswood as part of an efficiency drive.

The Conservative administration said it was pressing ahead with a pledge to give value for money by consulting on the use of empty space at both the council’s main Badminton Road offices in Yate and at Kingswood Civic Centre.

Council leader Matthew Riddle said savings had to be made and the authority had to be as efficient as possible, although he said the protection of frontline services came ahead of filling vacant office space.

He said: “Both the civic centre and the Badminton Road offices have lots of unused space and it is wasteful of taxpayers’ money to operate that way.

“We are now consulting our staff and opposition council groups on how we can best use the space we have and see if

there is room for any savings.

“We have made no firm decisions at this point. However, whatever decision is made, we are 100 per cent committed

Winterbourne student wins first place in national 3D printing competition WINTERBOURNE International Academy is expanding its technology department into the world of 3D printing thanks to Year 12 student, Tom Sussex winning a nationwide 3D Design Competition.

Hosted by 3D printer brand, XYZprinting, the competition saw over 20 schools and academies from across the country compete for their chance to win a state-of-the-art 3D printing lab, putting their computer graphic skills to the test to submit almost 200 entries between them.

All submissions were reviewed for their creativity and originality by a panel of experts, before a final shortlist of ten entries was put to a public vote.

Winterbourne International Academy was the only institution to see multiple designs make the final ten.

XYZprinting’s CEO, Simon Shen, who chaired the judging panel said: “We were astonished by the calibre of submissions – several students demonstrated

an already polished mastery of 3D design, and the enthusiasm was palpable, so coming up with a top ten was a real challenge.

However, Tom in particular not only created a fantastic design for a chair, he also included an accompanying 3D rendering to show how it could be applied to a real-life situation, which we knew from the beginning would make it a strong contender.”

Tom’s win will now see his Academy begin the new term with a whole host of 3D printing equipment at their disposal, sponsored by XYZprinting, enabling them to continue exploring the technology.

Miss Sam Hucker, Deputy Head of the Technology Learning Area at Winterbourne International Academy said: “Tom has achieved something incredible and is a credit to the Academy, along with all the other students who took the time to participate in the competition.

Together, they have sown the seeds for a true legacy at our school. We’re looking forward to

getting the lab set up and helping students for years to come realise their creative potential by making use of a revolutionary technology.”

Tom said “I am extremely happy to have won the competition as CAD work has always been one of my favourite

things about product design and winning will really help to further my career in the subject.

The 3D printers will also give everyone at the school (including myself) new opportunities to boost our projects with high quality models and I’m very excited to use them.”

AN exhibition about life in Coalpit Heath was set up to mark the start of a major house building project in the village.

The week-long display involved one of Merlin Housing Society’s properties that is due to be redeveloped being transformed temporarily into a 1950s-themed memory house.

Some 150 people took the opportunity to call in and see the exhibition, which included recordings of villagers’ memories

There were also pictures of Coalpit Heath’s mining past hung on the walls and various items of the period scattered around the rooms.

Project Manager Sally Gilbert said among visitors to the house were some former occupants and local councillors.

She said: “We had lots of positive feedback and some people even came back for a

second visit.”

The display marked the beginning of work on the first of 84 new homes that will be built during the next two years.

Merlin is redeveloping 44 old properties and some garages to make way for the new houses.

The scheme is the first phase of the housing association’s multi-million pound project to build up to 850 new homes in South Gloucestershire over the next few years to replace about 500 damp and draughty pre-cast reinforced concrete properties.

Old tin sales pay for tools to Africa COALPIT Heath residents Shelley Wright and Tracey Morris have discovered a novel way of raising money for charity – selling old biscuit, tobacco, confectionery and motoroil tins on eBay. The pair volunteer with the Bristol branch of the charity Tools for Self Reliance. The group collects old tools and sewing machines, refurbishes them and transports them, via the charity’s headquarters in Hampshire, to partners in Africa who train local people and distribute the kits. In the last four years they have completed six projects and sent 92 kits of tools.

Tracey Morris, the project coordinator for the region, said, ‘People donate the tools for us to refurbish and send to the charity’s partners in Africa, but we have to raise the funds to cover the shipping costs and to train the recipients to use the tools too.’

Part of this money comes from selling old tins on eBay. The

tins are donated along with the tools, and after a quick clean are listed for sale.

Shelley Wright is the eBayer who sells the tins, ‘Most of the tins we sell fetch under £5, many only 99p, but every now and then we find a tin which is really sought after.’ she says, ‘It has taken a long time but we have recently reached £3000 of tins sales.’

Each kit costs about £40 to ship to Africa, so the old tins have paid for 75 kits to be sent to artisans in some of the world’s poorest countries.

Winterbourne pre-school celebrates outstanding rating from Ofsted inspector HIGH praise has been given to the Winterbourne Early Years Centre by an education inspector, who rated it as outstanding.

The centre, previously known as St Michael’s Pre-School, is managed by a voluntary committee of parents and is open each weekday in term time at the Greenfield Centre in Park Avenue.

Ofsted inspector Jean Essom gave it the highest grading in all key areas, saying there was a shared vision among management, the committee and staff for a constant need to improve.

She said the manager was “highly inspirational” and spoke highly of the “superb” teaching.

She said: “Staff are excellent role models and encourage children to investigate and explore.

“As a result, children are highly motivated, eager to explore and develop a curiosity for learning. They gain the skills and attitudes needed for when they move on to school.”

In her report, Ms Essom said children benefited from outstanding educational programmes and made excellent progress in all areas of their learning and development.

Staff gave valuable support to families to promote children’s physical and emotional well-being, while children with specific needs were quickly identified and their parents fully involved in plans for the youngsters.

The pre-school used to be based in St Michael’s Rooms and moved to the Greenfield Centre in 1996, where the staff are led by manager Sally Bowd.

A NEW garden at Winterbourne’s library is now open, providing extra space for storytelling, play and outdoor craft sessions.

Money from developers gained through planning conditions allowed a patch of grass behind the building to be transformed.

Councillor Katherine Morris, vice chairwoman of South Gloucestershire Council, officially opened the garden She said: “We see this space as an extension of the library – a place to relax, read, meet friends and make use of the free wi-fi.

“It’s a brilliant place for storytelling, craft and play activities, anything in fact that library users and the local community would like to see.”

The Archdeacon of Malmesbury, Christine Froude, was also at the opening ceremony, together with library staff and members of the library users group.

There is now a need for volunteers of any age to help look after the garden and contribute ideas for using the space. Anyone interested should call into the library and talk to the staff.

The effects of the ‘Tory takeover’

WITH the general election putting the Conservative party back into power, David Cameron will reign for another four years. With the power once again in the Tories hands, Chancellor George Osborne has revealed his plans for the new budget. Of course this budget affects everyone, although young people have found themselves particularly riled up after the plans have affected us specifically.

One of the biggest changes in the budget is the rise of the minimum wage, something which is welcomed by many with open arms. The rise to £9 is only going to affect those who are over 25. Having a compulsory living wage is a fantastic concept, although the 2 million under 25 year olds who need a higher wage are not benefiting from the changes. It seems somewhat ironic how politics has strongly attempted to engage young people, really pushing the ideology of first time voters, but it could be argued that we are simply being left out of the actual changes that are occurring.

Young people and politics haven’t had a good relationship within this last decade, with the rise in tuition fees still affecting many teenagers whose chances of pursuing higher education are largely affected by the tripled fees. Despite the time given to pay these fees off, the minimal grants offered also mean that students are suffering to live with the money given to them, only compounded by the failure of the minimum wage change to those who arguably need it a more.

These much needed grants are also being

affected by this Tory takeover. Maintenance grants for students, paid to students with family incomes below £42,000, are to be scrapped and converted into loans from 2016/17, yet another negative for young people. The amount of money that young people will have to pay back is ever increasing, only contributing to the negative perception that many young people hold of the current government.

It could be said that young people are distancing themselves from politics, as the changes that politics is making on our everyday lives seem to affect us only in the undesirable sense. Those in power are not outwardly making an effort to reassure young people that the future is bright, yet they act surprised at the extremely low number of young voters.

Politics is confusing to many, and traditionally the assumption has been made that young people don’t care for the decisions made inside of parliament. But of course we do. We care for the implications that these changes have brought into our lives, and after all it is our generation that will be in charge one day.

The government may not classify the needs of young people as important in comparison to other age groups, only widening the gap between the age of voters and their willingness to become involved in the future of the government; and the ability to make educated decisions with the entire population in mind.

Winterbourne Down WI Report CHRISTINE Cole was the speaker at our last meeting. She is a volunteer gardener on the Dyrham Park Estate and also knows a tremendous amount about the history of this lovely National Trust property.

William Blathwayt was a Civil Servant, a very good linguist, serving under four monarchs; as well as managing to hold five jobs as a Member of Parliament, Secretary to the Board of Trade, Clerk to the Ambassador in The Hague, Clerk in the Plantations Office and Secretary of State.

However, he was never recognised or honoured by any of the monarchs. When he was 37 he visited a friend in Bristol and had an introduction to the Wynters Family who owned Dyrham Park. In 1686 he married Mary Wynter heiress to the Estate thus gaining the country residence that he so desired. He employed two architects who designed the east and west wings of the property. Blaythwayt was a very

influential and hardworking man but not liked as he was not good at paying his gardeners, builders and stone masons. He did not borrow money to build and improve Dyrham and never went into debt. He died leaving £20,000 as his Estate.

At the present time the whole building is wrapped in scaffolding and weatherproof protection material whilst the roof is being restored and renovated. The general public are permitted to go onto a roof walkway which has been put into position around the top of the building. It is well worth a visit as you can look over the park and distant vista. Children are also allowed up there and can peep through perspex windows to see the stone work, gargoyles and the roof elevations. You can also have a close look at John Harvey’s sculptured eagle.

In the middle of July our WI had its annual outing to Serridge Gardens in Coalpit Heath. We were lucky to have a warm sunny afternoon and members enjoyed strolling around the gardens, woodland and lawns that dropped down to a large

lake. We all enjoyed a cream tea in a wonderful courtyard which was adorned with hanging baskets and troughs. A really peaceful way to have a cup of tea and catch up with friends.

Our next meeting in All Saints Church Hall is on 3rd September at 7.30pm and our Speaker is Elizabeth Rhodes talking about Life-Before Teabags 1890–1959. On 1st October our speaker, Mark Steeds, will talk about Pirates and Privateers from Bristol. Do join us as everyone is welcome.

Frampton Cotterell WI Report THINGS are calming down a little as we head into August, the month where we normally take our summer “break” from activities as many members tend to be taking holiday at around this time.

July has been a bit of a whirlwind. Our members were busy baking their finest for sale at the Frampton Festival WI cake stand – everything from tray bakes, to fruit cakes, fairy cakes, flapjacks and shortbread;

August, 2015 there was a wide and very tasty looking selection on offer.

Volunteers took turns in the stall and by 5pm we had cleared the tables as in previous years. It was great to see people enjoying the cakes, lovely to meet more of the villagers and we were blessed with a marvellous sunny day to top it all off.

The committee also held its monthly meeting on the 21st and other meetings were held including one to progress the production of our own WI cookbook, and the book club met as always to discuss the latest read.

July’s talk was held on the 28th at Crossbow House.

Commander Philip Unwin came along to tell us all about The SS Great Britain – “the Concorde of her day”. It was fascinating to learn more about the history of this beautiful ship which is such an important part of our local heritage – and amazing to think that she returned to Bristol on the 5th July 1970, 127 years after leaving, to the day.

Philip’s passion for the Great Britain really came across and we have a feeling that most of

our members will be planning to visit her again in the not too distant future.

There is no official August social, however there is more to look forward to as we head into September, including the Avon Federation WI Arts and Crafts Exhibition at the M Shed on 19th and 20th September, and on the 22nd September, the Crossbow/ St Peters Hall meeting will welcome Sue Mountstevens, our local Police and Crime Commissioner who is going to tell us all about her role.

Visitors are always welcome to our monthly meetings at St Peter’s Hall on School Road at 7.45pm, on the 4th Tuesday of the month. Visitors are charged at £2.50 for the evening and any new members can join by paying a membership fee. We also have a number of special interest groups that meet separately including a book club, choir and our darts team.

Coalpit Heath WI Report IT has been a busy month for the ladies of Coalpit Heath WI, with lots of other things on the go as well as the usual meeting. We were very lucky with the weather at both St Saviour’s church fete and also the Manor School fete, I think it is fair to say that the children really enjoyed decorating the gingerbread people made by Jennie and Judy.

Carter. His varied programme touched on love, tragedy ending with his winning poem giving him the title Bristol Storyteller of the Year. We particularly enjoyed “Where there’s tea, there’s hope!” and then we had a break for refreshments.

The wildflower beds at Crossbow are beginning to show some colour and are keeping Tracy and Pat busy with weeding and shearing. Seeds have already been purchased for the Autumn, ready for a second sowing. Let’s hope that the judge liked them for the Village in Bloom judging.

Jennie Mitchell and Rosemary Knight attended the National Federation’s AGM at the Royal Albert Hall. The meeting (which is our Centenary Year AGM) was a celebration of all things WI,

and the contribution to society in general since its foundation in Anglesey in 1815.

Catherine Proudlove also had a trip to London to attend the Buckingham Palace Garden Party, starting the day in pouring rain in Bristol but ending up in sunshine at the Palace. The ladies left the Palace on mass bringing the London traffic to a standstill.

A group of our ladies also took part in the Midnight Walk for St Peter’s Hospice. We opted for the 5 mile route because we were not feeling particularly fit, and walking up Bridge Valley Road, certainly proved that we weren’t. We did however have an amazing evening, the weather was dry and it was lovely to see the Suspension Bridge all lit up, we walked the route with hundreds of other women, having a good chat, getting exercise and also raising money for a great cause. Hopefully we will do the 10 mile route next year if we can persuade Marcia up the hills. Well done Joan for completing the walk with a broken elbow.

Top tips for tip-top Feet

H

ERE is some excellent advice to help ensure you spring into summer with healthy, gorgeous feet: Wash your feet every day in warm soapy water, but do not soak them for long periods of time, as this destroys the natural oils. Dry carefully, especially between your toes, and put your feet up – literally – for 10 minutes each night.

If you can see and reach your feet, regularly trim your toenails using nail clippers and cut them straight across. Avoid cutting down the corners as this can cause in-growing nails. File your nails if it is easier, or arrange an appointment with a podiatrist who will cut your nails for you.

Use a footfile prior to showering or bathing. If the skin is dry, use a good quality moisturiser all over – except between the toes.

Do wear well-fitting shoes and vary the type of shoe and heel size. Slip-on shoes are better as occasional wear. Straps or laces over the instep stop feet sliding forwards and offer more support.

Don’t hide discoloured or cracked toenails with polish. If it’s a fungus, it needs treatment – polish can make it worse.

Top Tips: Exercise improves circulation and keeps feet supple. With legs as still as you can, circle feet 10 times in each direction.

Also, straighten your toes and wriggle them, then raise, point and curl them for 5 seconds, 10 times. Or try drawing the alphabet in the air with your feet. Massage is soothing - so use a roller, or a willing partner, on your feet after a hard day.

As feet swell during the day, buy shoes later in the afternoon.

Wear flip-flops in public areas such as gym showers to avoid picking up feet problems.

Cut your toenails after your bath or shower when they are softer.

Blisters should be left to dry out on their own. If they burst, sterilise and leave to dry. Do not burst them yourself.

Don’t be unkind to your feet, treat them well!

Seek the help of a qualified podiatrist if you have any concerns about your feet.

Get well, stay well.

Siblings in epic cycle ride for charity A FRAMPTON Cotterell man is planning to ride to Germany to raise money for a local charity.

Steve Green wants to raise money for Paul’s Place, the support centre for adults with disabilities in Coalpit Heath. He and his sister Jackie will do it by cycling, unsupported, from Frampton Cotterell to its twin town of Kelbra, in the east of Germany. The journey is at least 800 miles.

Steve told the Voice: “We aim to have a big send off at 9am on Sat 29 August. We will encourage as many locals as possible to wave us off from the Truly Scrumptious cafe, hopefully; plenty will take up the offer of cycling the first 5 or 10 miles with us”.

Steve, 60, is a retired forensic scientist who had to give up running due to injury, but says he finds cycling “not too bad!”

SSISTED dying is one of the most sensitive and emotionally charged debates of this generation. It is an issue which goes to the core not only of religion, but of our most basic human nature. It is also an issue on which I am required to vote in a few short months.

The Assisted Dying Bill has been brought back to the House of Commons as a Private Member’s Bill. As it is an issue of conscience I have the duty to vote according to my own feelings, and also according to the strength of feeling within the constituency. The government takes no position on the legislation.

The Bill would create a legal

pathway for terminally ill patients with less than six months to live to receive assistance to end their own lives. The patient would have to be mentally competent and be over 18 years old.

Those with mental illnesses or non-terminal illnesses would be excluded. No medical professional would be required to assist if they objected on moral grounds and the patient would have to administer the life-ending drugs themselves.

Instinctively I have great sympathy for terminally ill patients and, and I can honestly say I do not know how I would feel in their situation. Of the small few terminal patients I have met, I have been both shocked and heartened by their emotional

strength, and their determination to enjoy life.

Phase one work at Ware Court nears completion for older residents WORK on the first phase to remodel Ware Court in Winterbourne is set to be finished by the end of August.

The building project involves converting bedsits at the 40-year-old sheltered housing scheme in Harcombe Road into one and two-bedroom flats.

Merlin Housing Society, which runs the independent living services (ILS) site, said contractors moved on site in March.

The building was split in two, with residents continuing to live in one half while work was carried out to the rest of the premises.

In total, ten bedsits, eight one-bed flats and a former warden’s flat will be turned into 12 one-bedroom and three two-bedroom flats. An indoor scooter store and disabled toilet is also being provided and the communal lounge will be redecorated and refurnished.

Resident Jean Lowe, who has lived at Ware Court for 29 years,

said the work had been done with a minimum of noise and dust.

She said: “When we’ve approached the project manager about some changes to the plans, he’s listened to us and, where appropriate, this has been approved. We’re grateful for this.

“We have also found the site manager and all the workers to be very friendly and obliging.

Now we can’t wait to move into our new homes.”

Major projects manager Dave Milner said: “We’ve been committed to working with the residents during the remodelling.

We’ve taken on board some of their comments and where suitable, have made changes to our plans.”

That included turning one of the ground floor properties into a temporary lounge so the residents could continue with their regular coffee mornings Mr Milner said: “We’ll have learned plenty of lessons from working here, which will make the work to the next schemes in

Junior FR open Proms in the Meadows 2015

I

T was a glorious evening with over 500 spectators at this annual event in Gloucester on 4th July and on the strength of their past performances, JFR were asked to open the proceedings.

With a set of 6 songs, mixing a cappella, backing tracks and accompaniment by pianist Jo Luddington, each was introduced with a short speech from individual girls and delighting the audience with their percussion skills whilst accompanying their FR helpers singing The Cup Song from ‘Pitch Perfect’.

Wendy Howse (MD) received much praise from the audience on behalf of JFR including this from Robert Pardoe (organiser and MD of the Iron Acton Choir) “...your young girls are a credit to you and an absolutely perfect example of the power of community singing...

Brilliant stuff.”

Proms was a fabulous way to finish a very successful year for Junior FR who now break for the summer, but will return in September for the next chapter.

Junior Singing Workshop for November 2015 In conjunction with Junior FR, Fascinating Rhythm will be running their second Junior singing workshop on November 14th. Second crematorium planned for South Gloucestershire PEOPLE in South Gloucestershire could get a second crematorium under plans being drawn up for a site on the outskirts of Thornbury.

The scheme is still at the development stage but is proposed for land behind the cemetery in Alveston.

Seating for up to 400 in a ceremonial hall is included in the scheme, which has been prepared by architects Lewis Foster Lewis for Thornbury Crematorium Ltd. Currently, South Gloucestershire’s only crematorium is at Westerleigh, where operators last year won consent to build a second chapel and bereavement hospitality suite to cope with an increasing number of services.

In 2013 it accommodated 2,278 cremations.

Other crematoria are at Canford in Westbury-on-Trym, South Bristol and Gloucester.

A community event has been organised for Thursday, August 6, to give people the chance to

find out more about the plans from the professional team behind the scheme.

It will be held from 4pm7.30pm in the Jubilee Hall, Greenhill, Alveston, and comments received will be used to develop the plan further.

People can also find out more from a website www.thornburycrematorium.co.uk running from August 3.

Land for the crematorium is off Alveston Hill and proposals include a tree-lined entrance, parking, gardens of rest and a refreshment area.

The Wurzels to star in Yate Shopping Centre anniversary weekend WEST Country favourites The Wurzels will lead Yate Shopping Centre’s 50th anniversary celebrations during a weekend of events to help bring its summer programme to a close.

The band will be supported by a host of tribute acts performing music by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones, Michael Jackson, Buddy Holly and Robbie Williams.

Entertainment will start at 11am on both Saturday, August 22, and Sunday, August 23, with the tribute bands appearing on the opening day.

The Wurzels are set to be on stage at 2pm on the Sunday, following performances by community music and dance groups and the Avon Fire and Rescue Wind Band.

There will also be an anniversary cake to be cut and a new mural to be unveiled, while a beach party will feature

inflatables, a bouncy castle, children’s favourite characters and a large slide.

Andrew Lowrey, the shopping centre manager, said: “This is without doubt the largest event we have ever put on in our 50 year history and will be something to remember.

“We are encouraging the traders to get involved and local schools will be unveiling the latest mural, created 50 years after the first one, which is now sited near the entrance to the Tesco Extra store.”

Mr Lowrey said activities running throughout the school summer holidays would lead to

the celebration weekend, from the beach in the centre square to appearances by fireman Sam and Norman Price on August 4, an assault course on August 11 and a steel band on August 13.

The final event is set to be a craft workshop on August 27.

Mr Lowrey said: “I am incredibly proud how my team organises these successful events year after year. They are an important part of our annual activities, free to customers and provide great entertainment to our community.”

Old Man Fram piles on pressure in promotion chase

AS the league season heads into the final month, success is still on the cards for both the 1st and 2nd teams, as both teams sit in second place in their respective leagues.

The first team have had a mixed month, winning 3 and losing 2 games; however the game versus promotion rivals Whitchurch could play a vital role in the teams promotion chase. With just 17 points between the teams leading into the game at Whitchurch, victory was obtained thanks to the bowling efforts of both Hayden Botha (4wickets) and Brendan Foreman’s maiden first team 5 wicket haul.

Tim Mason’s usual destructive batting performance of 62 meant the Fram take a healthy lead over Whitchurch into the last 4 games of the season. The possibility of the team catching table topping local rivals Hambrook is becoming less likely though, as Hambrook continue their own fine form.

The First team also managed the complete the double over other local rivals Coalpit Heath.

Vice-captain Luke Baker scored 75, part of a rich vein of form for the Fram’s star batsmen which included 95 in the narrow defeat to Bohemians and a match winning 64 not out in the comfortable win over Bitton.

Club captain Jimmy Dickinson has also enjoyed a fine month with bat and ball, after clearing through the top order of Coalpit Heath with 6-47 in the 67 run victory. He also smashed 79 in the narrow defeat at Bohemians.

The slip up result was the loss to bottom placed Stoke Bishop.

Sam Coleman, with 50 not out, helped the team recover to 206 from a woeful position of 93-7.

Frampton were undone by the excellent innings of 125 not out

by Stoke Bishop’s Jalal Ahmed.

The second team have excelled with five wins out of five to sit in second place of Division 8. Matthew Shermon has shown fine form with 5-25 in the win over Long Ashton and 45 not out in the win away at Lodway, helped by the efforts of Brendan Foreman’s classy 66 and Ceri Rowlands 5 wicket haul.

Matthew’s 4-54 also ensured victory over Bitton. Returning Frampton player Mark Webley rolled back the years with a sumptuous 85 in a 40 run victory. In the crushing 9 wicket victory over Old Cathedralians Matthew starred again with 62 not out. Victory over Bradley Stoke concluded the winning streak with Ian Roylance’s fine 73 and a Robin Cater’s second 5 wicket haul for the club - 9 years after his first.

Currently sitting in sixth place, they only managed to win one game out of five. However the one victory over Stoke Gifford was a comfortable one, ensured mostly by the Woods family.

Steve took 4 wickets and Ian scored 62 not out. Paul Cater scored 50 in the 4 wicket loss to Barrow Gurney, Navin Dahiya’s 71 not out was not enough to secure victory against Twyford House, and neither was Simon Hughes’ 63 against St Mary Redcliffe. Ian Mollison’s 54 couldn’t ensure victory over

Patchway in the 16 run loss.

In the Bateman Trophy Twenty20 quarter final vs University Staff, Frampton set a modest 135 with no stand out performances with the bat.

However with the ball Frampton were superb resulting in a 55 run victory.

Unfortunately the cup organisers could not re-arrange the date of a mouth-watering semi-final against Hambrook, as it clashed with Frampton hosting the Youth Finals. Frampton had to forfeit the tie and give Hambrook a free run into the Final .

Winterbourne on promotion hunt Winterbourne Cricket Club are hoping to several promotions this month as club expands.

Paul Dagger has the details.

AUGUST looks set to be an interesting month for Winterbourne’s cricketers, as all sides are still in the hunt for promotion spots.

In addition, the Under 15s have reached the final in both their league and cup competitions, with the Under 17s winning through to their league final as well. The Under 19s are still in the T20 tournament and the first team have reached the Bristol & District Cup final for the first time in the club’s history.

The club also had another historic first in July - when they

fielded 6 teams on a Saturday.

The fifths continue their strong run in friendly matches, and will be looking to enter the league structure in summer 2016.

The fourth team have had a mixed set of results recently, but other results have helped them maintain their top three slot and they will hope for a strong finish.

As will the third team, who also sit in the top four and have to play the team’s above them, which gives them the chance to climb the league further if they can secure a couple of wins.

The seconds are also in the promotion places, currently lying second behind a strong Cheltenham side that they are due to face on the last day of the season. The first team have beaten league leaders Claverham twice now, and have leap-frogged into second place. Healthy results in the next month could also result in promotion.

The young Sunday side, led by Mike Green, also have promotion in their sights, as they sit top of their division.

Sunday cricket has been used to develop players in the 15-21 age bracket, and the youngsters have responded brilliantly. They

remain unbeaten and will want to carry that through the rest of the league programme.

So, all to play for but no silverware secured just yet.

A busy off season for Frampton Rugby RUGBY players in Frampton Cotterell have put in a hard weekend’s work, despite the season not getting underway until September.

As part of the National Natwest Rugby force weekend at the end of June, members of FCRFC revamped the club bar and kitchen. The bar area has new shelving, flooring and bar top, with the kitchen also receiving a revamp.

The work was part of the Natwest Rugby force weekend, which aims to get clubhouses ready to watch the World Cup in September.

Club chairman Andy Pullen said “I would like to personally thank everyone for working so hard over the weekend. You have

Summer fun as Pucklechurch shine in league PLAYING their matches at Wellsway School in Keynsham, the Puckle girls in yellow and royal blue have continued their winning ways during Summer league this year, Lisa Whithead writes.

Starting back in May, we have so far taken on teams such as Keynsham 1st’s & 2nd’s, Knowle 1st’s & 2nd’s, Wick, BAC, Old B’s and Westberries and have scored an impressive 28 goals with only conceding 9.

With teamwork and commitment from all players on the pitch the goals were finished off by forwards - Sophie Edwards, Tina Scammell, Rhian Phillips, Amy Davidge, Emily Pollock, Kate Jones and Hitch and mid-fielders Laura Stone and Lisa Whitehead.

We all thoroughly enjoy summer league as its a great way of keeping fitness and skill levels up and with still 4 games left to play the Pucklechurch girls will continue to battle away and aim for the top of the table.

Frampton in intense pre-season preparations

FRAMPTON’S players have returned to Beesmoor Playing Fields looking to get themselves fit and ready for the long-season ahead. Nick Talbot reports.

Two pre-season training sessions each week started at the beginning of July and have been focussing on a good mixture of football related fitness and some core ball work. Frampton have had the expertise of David

Hillier taking the majority of the sessions, who can draw on his playing experiences at both Arsenal and Bristol Rovers, as well as his vast knowledge as a football coach.

The players have all been working very hard throughout July and face an equally tough August, as the friendlies start to come at them thick and fast.

Frampton have not been shy in getting friendlies organised and have a total of 9 games to fit in during August, focussing on Saturday afternoons in order to get the players back into the rhythm. The full pre-season fixture list is as follows:Saturday 1st August, 2.30pm Frampton Athletic vs Charfield AFC. Saturday 8th August 12.00pm, Frampton Athletic vs Iron Acton.

Saturday 8th August 3.00pm, Frampton Athletic XI vs Iron Acton Reserves.

Badminton Carvery in fundraiser for Coalpit Heath FC

A FAMILY fun day is being held at the Badminton Carvery to raise money for the local youth football club.

The pub and Coalpit Heath FC are joining forces to organise the day on Saturday 8th August from 12-5pm.

The activities include a bouncy castle, face painting, and a chance to win free ice cream for 6 months in a drawing competition. There will also be a prize draw, as well as a barbecue.

A disco has also been organised in the evening.

The Business Manager of the pub, Del Llewellyn, said: “I am very keen to strengthen our affiliation with the Football Club, as a footballer myself who also runs my own football team in Chippenham, I understand the financial burdens and the effort it takes to run a successful football club”.

Winterbourne win local tournament

WINTERBOURNE’S Under 11’s warmed up for the new season with victory in the Frampton Rangers annual tournament. The two Winterbourne teams met in the semi final after going through the group stages unbeaten and the victorious team beat local rivals Bradley Stoke on penalties in the final.

Silverware for Frampton rugby’s second team

Mangotsfield Sports.

This will lead all 3 of Frampton’s teams into the competitive fixtures, which will commence with night games during the week commencing 31st August.

Managers Adrian Pell (first team), Yinka Brownlow (reserves) and Brian Cook (‘A’ team) will be hoping to be fighting at the top end of the

table.

Frampton are still looking for new players to join the squad, so if you’re interested in joining the club, please feel free to come along to any of the training sessions in August (Thursdays 6.30pm at Beesmoor Road Playing Fields), or even come along to one of the pre-season friendlies and introduce yourself to the managers.

FRAMPTON Cotterell Rugby Club are celebrating after collecting their trophy for becoming league champions.

The team picked up the Gloucester second team reserve trophy at the league’s AGM. A great season where the 2s finished top of the league losing only 2 games all season against strong opposition .

Joint captain Mark Smith said; ” I’m so happy with this. When I stepped down from the firsts I thought these days were gone”.

His fellow captain Kev Long added; “I am so impressed with the younger players . Adam Pullen and Brandon Ball were the stand out players and Kobe Mclashen is a star for the future, closely followed by Sam Rumley”.
