Sorrow as school shuts down

AN independent school in Winterbourne is closing down, with the loss of more than 50 jobs.

The couple who run Silverhill School, Jenifer and Julian Capper, blamed the deteriorating economic outlook for their decision.

The preparatory school and day nursery were also both given scathing reports after inspections

from the schools regulator Ofsted, which rated them inadequate after a visit in February. The Cappers lodged formal complaints against the inspections, which followed a previous outstanding rating for the school and good rating for the nursery.

COVID-19 deaths fall TWO deaths from coronavirus had been reported among South Gloucestershire residents over four weeks as the Voice went to press.

For the first time since March, the Office for National Statistics reported no deaths with COVID-19 among people in the district during the two weeks ending on June 26 and July 3.

During the week to July 10, the most recent week for which figures for the district are available, one South Gloucestershire resident was reported to have died from the virus, in hospital.

There was also one COVID-19 death in the week ending on June 19.

Figures for COVID-19 deaths in care homes notified to regulator the Care Quality Commission showed that none had been reported in South Gloucestershire during the four weeks leading up to July 17.

The first three registered deaths of South Gloucestershire residents involving coronavirus happened in the week ending March 27 – the same week lockdown measures were introduced in England.

In the following week the numbers increased to 16, before peaking at 35 during the week ending on April 10.

The following three weeks each saw between 21 and 22 COVID-19 deaths, before numbers started to decline.

In total, 169 South Gloucestershire residents have died with the virus: 81 in hospital, 80 in care homes and eight in their own homes.

The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in South Gloucestershire was 750 as the Voice went to press, an infection rate of 265.4 per 100,000. *The Frampton and Coalpit Covid Support Group has changed focus. With fewer people shielding and self-isolating, the group is aiming to ensure no families or individuals go without over the summer, with its Summer Supplies food parcels scheme, supported by parish councils.

Volunteers are sourcing food and packing parcels at Zion Hall on a Monday before they are distributed by volunteer drivers on Tuesdays.

n NEWS From page 1 Mrs Capper, the school's headmistress, and her husband, who is the principal and bursar, said they had tried for two years to find a new operator, without success, and would not now reopen for the start of the next academic year in September.

They said they had been “working tirelessly” to secure the future of the school, which has 220 children aged from three months to 11 years, but it reluctantly decided that it “cannot continue as a going concern.”

The school buildings, which sit on a 9.5 acre site off Swan Lane, will now be sold.

The Cappers, who have run the school for 14 years, say they are now working with other local schools and South Gloucestershire Council to find alternative provision for Silverhill pupils.

They say they are also helping the school’s 21 full-time and 34 part-time staff find new jobs as they are made redundant.

Mrs Capper said: “The school is operating with reduced pupil numbers across all year groups and the impact of Covid-19

“For two years we have been working tirelessly to secure the future of the school and have held discussions with two potential school operators during the Covid-19 closure.

"We were hopeful up until very recently, but unfortunately the last of these discussions has ended and it is now clear that the school cannot continue as a going concern.

“We are sincerely sorry that this is the case and that we have had to make this announcement so close to the end of the school term.

"We appreciate this is not ideal but, whilst we have been open in respect of the challenges we face, we have sought to delay making any formal announcement regarding closure in the hope that we could find a solution.

“We are working with South Gloucestershire Council and other independent schools in the area so that parents can make the right choices for their children.

"Meanwhile staff are being consulted and informed about the future and we

are taking legal advice to ensure they are supported and that due processes are followed.”

The school has been operating on its current site since 1992, having opened in Rudgeway in 1949.

Ofsted's report on Silverhill, published shortly before lockdown in March, included criticisms of health and safety procedures, poor maintenance including "falling masonry", safeguarding procedures including "poor" recruitment processes, training and "unsafe" checks on staff for their suitability to work with children.

When the report was published Mr Capper described it as a "brutal, inhumane inspection" and a "catalogue of misrepresentation of the school", which had left staff in tears.

He had warned that the school was "now under significant threat", adding: "It could be the end of it.

“After years of being a high performing school, we are being thrown in the dustbin.”

Voice readers spoke of their sadness at the closure on our Facebook page.

James Shepherd said: "Really sad news. My youngest daughter attended the nursery and flourished there. So sad for all the staff, along with the children who attend today."

Angela Bracey said: "Such a lovely school, with my grandchildren attending the nursery and the main school.

They are all so happy there – so sad for Mr and Mrs Capper and all the staff."

Schools ‘excited’ about the return of all pupils in September

SCHOOLS have had to find new ways to say goodbye to leavers – and their next challenge is how to welcome all pupils back in September.

Traditional end-of-year events, from leavers' proms and discos to residential camps, had to be cancelled, with video messages and socially-distanced events taking their place for many of the Year 2, Year 6, Year 11 and Year 13 pupils completing their journeys through the area's schools.

Having first opened only for keyworker and vulnerable children during lockdown, then to limited year groups, staff have put hours of work into preparing

At Iron Acton C of E Primary School, head teacher Mike Riches is hoping for good weather to enable use of outdoor areas.

He said: “As a small school, children usually mix with each other throughout the whole school, but this won’t happen in September. They will be kept to their bubbles throughout the day, to limit the number of people they are in contact with.

This will be tricky in a small building, but we have plenty of outdoor space, so we plan to maximise this.

Amanda Flanagan, head teacher of The Manor C of E Primary school in Coalpit Heath, said: “We are very excited to welcome all of our children back to school in September.

All children will be returning to their new classes and will work in these groups as part of a ‘bubble’.”

“The whole team have really missed those children who have had to continue their learning at home, although their teachers have loved catching up with them through telephone calls, receiving emails with their work

“The staff have been phenomenal. They have worked tirelessly to put the well-being and the education of the children first. We are so pleased with the high number of children who returned and have had the opportunity to re-integrate into school life. We cannot wait to get going again in September despite the new restrictions, but we are committed to making things work in new ways.”

At Watermore Primary School in Frampton Cotterell, the usual Year 5 and 6 class swaps for Maths and English will not take place in September. Children will also have some time with their ‘old’ teachers before ‘moving up’

Iron Acton primary leavers by St James Church to the next class.

Primary school staff had to be creative to send their leavers off in style with traditional end of Year 6 celebrations scrapped.

At Frampton Cotterell C of E Primary, Year 6 pupils opted for a water fight and barbecue for their last day. Their leavers service was streamed live on Facebook so that parents could take part.

Head teacher Pete Barnard said: “I’ve been incredibly proud of every single family and how they have responded to lockdown, home schooling, returning this term and the manner in which they’ve shown great resilience throughout. Our community continues to show what an amazing spirit we have here at Frampton.”

At Iron Acton C of E Primary the leavers' service took place on the school field instead of St James church, with families socially-distancing, and the end of year play was filmed and sent to families to watch at home.

Kirsty Robson, head teacher at St Michael’s C of E Primary in Winterbourne, said: “Whilst our Year 6 have had a very different leaving experience, we have made it special for them. They enjoyed a fish and chip lunch, special online leavers' service which included a video from all of the staff wishing them well in their future endeavours. They left the school with a clapping guard of honour by the teachers.”

The Manor C of E Primary had a socially distanced sports morning for its leavers, and a

cinema afternoon, with popcorn.

A member of the school's friends association who is a professional photographer came in to take photos of the pupils' final days at primary school, and Year 6s left for the final time through an archway of socially-distanced waving ribbons, described by Mrs Flanagan as "a truly special moment".

Pupils and staff also said their farewells to Sue Calvert, a teaching assistant at The Manor for 27 years who is now retiring. *Winterbourne Academy maths teacher Deb Simmons has been nominated for this year's Pearson National Teaching Awards in the secondary school teacher of the year category.

Homes approved despite mine shaft fears PLANS for five homes in Coalpit Heath have been approved, despite concerns over the presence an old mine shaft under the site.

Claims were also made that the homes in Bell Road would “spoil” the tranquillity of St Saviour’s church cemetery opposite the site, with objections received from South Gloucestershire Council’s own conservation officer, 46 residents, ward councillors and Frampton Cotterell Parish Council.

The remotely-held meeting was told an old mineshaft was thought to be in the rear corner of the plot but its condition was unknown.

Frampton Cotterell ward councillor Tristan Clark said: “It is a high-risk mining area. While there is a proposed condition to require the applicants to carry out a coalmining investigation, that is putting the cart before the horse.

“If this mining survey takes place and finds the land would not support the amount of houses being proposed or the layout, then it makes a mockery of establishing the outline stage.

“The conservation officer’s recommendation is that this application should be refused, because it would utterly

A planning officer told the meeting previous proposals for six larger houses and two flats were rejected in 2018 but the new development was “completely different”, and the "public benefits" would outweigh harm to the Grade-II* listed church.

Emersons Green ward councillor Judy Adams said: “This is a scrubland site and this application would be a vast improvement.

There are large trees in the churchyard and the five properties will blend in well with all the other houses.”

Committee chairman Keith Burchell said: “I can see no problem with the views from the site into the churchyard, bearing in mind this churchyard is flanked on one side by the main Badminton Road, the A432, with horrendous amounts of traffic.”

Stoke Park and Cheswick ward councillor James Arrowsmith told the meeting on June 25: “I have concerns over the issues of the mining shaft."

The development management committee voted by 8-1 in favour of the scheme, which involves knocking down an existing bungalow.

n NEWS DISABILITY charity Paul’s Place is planning to reopen its Coalpit Heath day centre after having to shut for the lockdown.

Government guidelines introduced in March meant that the charity, which provides social activities to help physically disabled adults connect with other people, improve their health and develop new skills, had to find new ways to support people.

It set up the ‘Paul’s Place at Home’ project, with staff and volunteers keeping in regular contact with the 200 adults they support every week, through phone calls and daily online meetings as the isolation brought by lockdown had a "worrying" impact on many people's mental health.

Paul's Place chief executive Daniel Cheesman said: "I am really proud that we have continued to stay in touch with people and we now have a new and much-loved service in ‘Paul’s Place at Home’.

"The reality is that for many physically disabled people the impact of lockdown has been life-changing.

"People are naturally worried about their physical health, but it is the impact that we have seen on people’s mental health that has been the most worrying. Paul’s Place at Home, has meant that people have stayed connected with others and it has become a real lifeline for people."

Paul’s Place is planning to reopen face-to-face projects. Staff have already started to make home visits, and small groups of people are meeting, socially distanced, in community spaces.

Daniel said reopening the day facility was a "huge responsibility".

He said: "We are excited to be opening again so that we can see people and offer our much-loved service.

"Safety is the number one priority and when we reopen things will look a little

different."

This year is Paul’s Place's 25th anniversary year and the charity had several fundraising events planned, which had to be cancelled or changed.

An emergency appeal has been launched via fundraising website JustGiving.

Monthly sales are back with a bang AFTER three months of closure, Stroud Auctions monthly sales are back with a bang.

A record 2,402 online bidders took part in the July sale, resulting in excellent prices across the board for the 1,627 lots.

One seller in particular had a very pleasant surprise when a group of four miners' lamps sold for £2,300, because the buyer had spotted in the online catalogue that there was a rare lamp in the lot. A great example of the power of online bidding!

The highest price achieved was for a collection of ephemera relating to musician and former Genesis singer Peter Gabriel, which sold for £8,500.

And our favourite lot was another piece of music memorabilia, a promotional poster for Pink Floyd's 1967 single See Emily Play, which sold for £750.

The next auction will be on August 5 and 6, and includes guns and weapons, medals and militaria, sporting and taxidermy items, cameras and binoculars and an

extensive toy section of over 700 lots, including a rare Hornby Dublo articulated coach.

In the specialist section of over 300 guns we have a number of good quality modern sporting guns, among them a Beretta Silver Pigeon and three Brownings, including a B2 and B25. Along with the modern guns we have a selection of rare and unusual antique guns, some of which are the only ones of their type known to exist. Also included are over 100 air weapons, including a single owner private collection of pistols and rifles. The catalogue for the August sale will be online from July 29.

n NEWS AFTER weeks of enforced closure, home working or emergency appointments, businesses in many of the sectors affected by the worst of the lockdown are reopening.

Coronavirus measures are in place with new rules, timed appointments and personal protective equipment becoming normal.

Myriam Rogerson, owner of Frampton Cotterell salon Beauty Plus by Myriam, has recently welcomed clients back to her premises on Church Road.

When she first reopened some facial treatments weren’t permitted by the government, although restrictions were due to be lifted on August 1. This has had an impact on her business, along with the longer time needed for appointments, which ensures social distancing can take place but limits the number of clients she can see in any one day. Her staff now wear PPE and clients have to wear masks.

Myriam said: “The beauty about the preparation for reopening was that ultimately I did not have to do too much, as I uphold a strict hygiene regime at all times. However, what had to be implemented was the extra PPE, which incurred extra cost. I worked on a variety of forms for us to complete the pre-screening with our clients prior to any treatments, as well as to uphold track and trace.

“We are delighted to be welcoming our supportive clients wearing our masks, face shield and disposable aprons – it’s the latest fashionable trend! My clients have been very loyal and with their continued support we should get going once again.”

Cautious reopening for lockdown-hit businesses Myriam Rogerson and Beth Baker at Frampton Cotterell salon Beauty Plus by Myriam

Williams have faced a challenge in reopening safely for customers, staff and their own family.

They started with a comprehensive risk assessment and decided to start slowly by opening only the garden, with numbers limited. Tables have been spaced out, for social distancing and to give staff extra space. There is a one-way system, sanitising stations and extra cleaning is being done.

Each table has a QR code so that people can order and pay by phone.

Lloyd said: “We have been collecting customer names and phone numbers, which we keep for track and trace, then dispose of details after 21 days. Everyone has been very supportive and understands that this is for all our safety.

“Unfortunately, like many pubs and restaurants, numbers are down dramatically. People are still unsure of coming out, and we all need to build peoples’ confidence in the safety precautions we have introduced, as safety is the main priority.

Barn reopens with activities WINTERBOURNE Medieval Barn is reopening its site this month, with family activities being staged each Wednesday.

The activities will be organised in line with social distancing rules, with families given designated arrival time slots and guided through their activities.

Advanced online booking is essential for the activities as anyone who arrives without a reservation cannot be admitted to the site.

The first activity on August 5 is a pirate adventure day, with treasure maps, ship and hat making and walking the plank.

On August 12 a wild adventure session will include otter spotting, making bird feeders and leaf printing.

A time travel adventure from the days of medieval knights to the Victorians will be held on August 19, and the series ends with a circus adventure day on August 26, including juggling, making a ringmaster's bow tie and finding out how to tame a lion.

Families can make a reservation for one of the sessions via the barn's Facebook page or website, winterbournebarn.org.uk, where more details on coronavirus precautions are available.

In September some of the first guided tours of the newlyrenovated barn will be taking place on September 12 and 13 for the Heritage Open Days event.

Tickets are free via the Barn website but numbers will be limited to enable social distancing, and there will also be online activities and stories to accompany the event.

10k race goes virtual RUNNERS are being urged to take part in a virtual version of a race to support a Frampton Cotterell school.

The Watermore 10k is now in its seventh year and has raised thousands of pounds for the primary school in Lower Stone Close so far.

Because of coronavirus restrictions on mass events, this year the event is being organised online. Runners still put in the distance, and can choose to follow the race course, a course of their own choosing, laps around the garden or even a treadmill.

Organisers say going virtual means anyone can take part in their own time, at their own pace, as long as they confirm they have covered the distance between September 18 and 25.

A 5k race and children's rainbow run are also being offered, with medals awarded to those who complete their challenge.

One of the organisers, Catherine Pritchard, said: "Our aim, every year, is to provide our community with a professional, fun and community-driven event.

"All profits go directly to the school and our children. As we need to keep social distancing measures in place we won't be able to gather in large numbers or use school grounds; a virtual event is therefore the next best thing!"

Explorer scouts Philip and Matthew Smith deliver kindness rocks to Bridge House residential home.

Delivering kindness to others LOCKDOWN may have put a stop to their regular activities but it didn't stop scouts in Frampton Cotterell from helping other people.

Members of the Zeus Explorer Scout unit and the 1st Frampton Cotterell Beavers and Cubs have worked together to create their own personalised 'kindness rocks' and delivered them to residents of Bridge House residential home in the village.

In all they produced 67 rocks, which were delivered to the home by explorer scouts Philip and Matthew Smith.

Explorer leader Chris Harris said: "Residents at our care homes are finding it difficult at the moment and our members wanted to do something to remind them that they are valued members of our community."

Members of the unit have also been taking part in online escape room challenges, quizzes and making cakes.

Some of the rocks painted by 1st Frampton Cotterell Beavers and Cubs, and members of the Zeus Explorer Scout Unit.

Fundraiser in memory of baby Theo goes online ORGANISERS of a charity day in memory of a baby boy who died from a rare condition are determined to continue raising money in his memory, despite current Covid-19 restrictions.

Family fun days have been held each year in Winterbourne Down to remember baby Theo Cameron.

Theo, one of twin boys born ten years ago, had a rare genetic disorder called ARC syndrome and died when he was just nine months old.

The Jessie May Trust provided help to the family which meant that he could be cared for at home with his brother Ollie.

Theo’s mum, Sarah Harttrup, has been fundraising for the charity with a summer family day at the Cross Hands pub in Winterbourne Down.

The coronavirus pandemic has meant that Theo’s Day has had to be cancelled.

However the family are

Sarah told supporters: “We

were gutted to not be able to celebrate Theo this year in our annual garden party.

"So instead of Theo’s day we have decided to have Theo’s month…and launch the TFT (Ten

for Theo) challenge.

“We are inviting everyone to challenge themselves and do 10 of something for sponsorship; it might be 10 thousand steps a day for 10 days, running a 10k, doing any form of any exercise every day for 10 days, walking every day for 10 days, cycling, knitting 10 scarves, it could literally be anything but it needs to be a challenge for you.”

Sarah said that the response during July has been fantastic: “We have nurses donating 10 hours of work, others running 10k in 10 days, baking cakes for 10 days to give to charity.”

So far more than £3,000 has been raised, and organisers are hoping the top the £5,000 mark by the end of the year, meaning they will have raised a total of £50,000 in Theo's memory.

You can be a councillor FRAMPTON Cotterell Parish Council is looking for people who have been inspired by the ‘goodwill’ generated during lockdown to join as councillors.

The council currently has vacancies for six people to join.

Chair Linda Williams, said: “The parish council is now looking forward to starting new projects that will benefit the community.

"The community focus has been an inspiration during this time and the council currently needs community-minded people to join us as parish councillors in order to achieve this.” Linda singled out voluntary groups as being ‘invaluable’ during Covid19, and it has awarded a grant to the Frampton and Coalpit Covid Support Group, amongst others.

Financial support is still available, and groups are asked to get in touch via the parish council website, framptoncotterell-pc.gov. uk. New members will be supported by the newly-appointed clerk, Andrea Durn, who will work closely with residents, local groups and organisations to listen to their views on what would improve the area.

One ongoing project has been drainage improvements at the Crossbow Park pitch. A contract has now been awarded and work is due to start shortly.

Yate man admits thefts A MAN found with bank cards stolen from Frampton Cotterell has admitted theft and fraud charges.

Matthew Coombes, 31, of Orchard Close, Yate, appeared before Bristol Magistrates’ Court in July and pleaded guilty to two thefts from motor vehicles, another theft and six counts of fraud.

He was arrested after a Yate resident caught images of him breaking into vehicles on CCTV on June 28.

Car charging points will help hit zero carbon target

A

S a community we should be immensely proud of the sacrifices that have been made by local people. After months of lockdown, our economy is reopening for business, and we have put in place new health protections and improvements needed as we all stay vigilant to help prevent a new coronavirus outbreak.

This means that, as we begin to rebuild and recover from the pandemic, we can start to work on improvements needed in our community, such as upgrading the number of electric vehicle charging points available.

I am therefore delighted to inform you that, following our hard-fought campaign, South Gloucestershire Council have confirmed they will be installing

rapid and fast electric car charging points in Frampton Cotterell, Thornbury and Yate.

Installation of the first batch of these charging points has already begun and the full total of 14 will be operational by the end of March 2021.

This will mean that residents in the neighbouring villages and hamlets will be able to access a car charging point near their home. This is, however, only the first phase of the council’s roll-out of EV charging points, with future plans for a number more in towns such as Marshfield.

We all know that electric vehicles emit a fraction of the emissions compared with petrol and diesel vehicles, but many motorists understandably feel that there are simply not enough electric car charging points in our

These charging points will help to give residents and businesses the confidence to invest in electric vehicles, improving the air quality along busy local roads with high congestion, such as Badminton Road.

Electric vehicles will also play a crucial role in helping the UK to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. As we have brought forward the date from which no new petrol or diesel cars will be allowed to be sold in the UK to 2035, the importance of ensuring that South Gloucestershire has the necessary infrastructure for electric car users has never been greater.

Village Action: Coalpit Heath and Frampton Neighbourhood Watch WE are all lucky to live in a ‘safe area’ but Neighbourhood Watch has been here for forty years. It continues to be effective and we want it to remain so, but it relies upon the support of local property owners and tenants. Many people come and go in our popular villages but we no longer go knocking on doors.

n THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

Rest and stress THIS year has been unexpected – a popular word seems to be ‘unprecedented’.

Thinking back to the beginning of the year – and we are now in the middle of it – I don’t think any of us could have predicted where we are now. We have moved suddenly from years of austerity, and a government ‘hands-off’ approach to a very much hands-on one. I say hands, but we still mustn’t touch hands or shake hands, I know.

The physical distancing or ‘social distancing’, as we are learning to call it, has been one of

the hard things about this year, but harder for some than for others.

If you are the sort of person who likes to keep to themselves, then perhaps it has not been too difficult, and you might think of it as a restful time. But if you are the sort of person who is very sociable, then this sort of distancing and isolation has been stressful, to say the least.

As we come out of lockdown and there are opportunities to progress towards something that seems more normal, then we should not forget that there will

still be quite a few problems and issues to deal with.

When I reflect on what has been happening, I can discern elements of emotional pain, fear, resentment, anxiety and vulnerability. The first important step is to recognise it, and the next is to do something about it, through talking to others, through prayer – that is, talking and listening to God – and through social engagement.

It is clear that we are here to help each other, and through such helping, there is greater healing.

Well, the pop-up headlamps have gone, which is a shame, but I still love the looks. The engine is up 10hp on the Mk1, to 140hp, and although that difference doesn’t sound much (and wouldn’t be in a heavy car) because the MX5 is so light, you really notice the difference.

Critically, though, this Mk2 hadn’t been messed around with, unlike the lowered, customised Mk1. That meant a nice compliant

ride, easily controllable rear-drive handling, with no extra wide tyres to rob it of feel and that lovely, unmatched Mazda manual gear change.

In this car, you use the gearbox for fun. It’s so precise, quick and the ratios are perfectly matched to the engine. It made me regret not holding out for a manual option on my current car, but beggars can’t be choosers I suppose.

The engine itself has a hairtrigger throttle – response is immediate and, whilst still not quick by modern standards (0-60 in 8 seconds), it is more than enough for a small convertible. It also revs up to 7,000rpm, which encourages hard driving.

So what to look out for? Well like the Mk1, the Mk2 also rusts.

arches and lower lips on the doors. The engine is trouble-free as long as you keep changing the oil and give it a bit of time to warm up before thrashing it.

The good news is that Mk2s are much more plentiful than the Mk1, and still cheaper. So there are lots around, and you don’t have to settle for a dog, because prices are so low. Usable cars start at £1,500; £5k buys you the best around and you should also get a hardtop included at that price.

My test model benefited from the facelift that Mk2s had in 2001, and had a not-unreasonable 85,000 miles on the clock. Everything still felt tight and accurate, and there was noticeably less rattle and hum compared to the rather tired Mk1 from last year.

Yes, the interior is plain and makes heavy use of black plastic (what Japanese car of this vintage doesn’t?) but it all still worked and showed no real signs of wear.

Today there would be aluminium trim all over the place, which looks great new – but after 20 years? I’m not so sure.

Something odd, neither pleasant nor unpleasant, was the smell. The turn-of-the-century Mazda smell, as it happens.

Coming out of the vents was the exact same odour that our 1997 Mazda 323 emitted. Immediately recognisable, redolent of a simpler, less complicated – oh stop it, this

isn’t a Proustian dream sequence, it’s a Japanese sports car.

In fact, it is the Japanese sports car. The owner barely uses it, and has a Mk1 wreck to restore as well, so he’s got his work cut out when it comes to MX5s.

As I mentioned last year, parts are cheap and the lack of complexity means that the home mechanic can do a lot of the work him or herself. Given that this particular car is garaged the entire time, I see no reason why it won’t be working perfectly in another 20 years.

Other running costs are almost an irrelevance: think 35mpg, minimal tyre costs because the wheels are so small (15 inches, some came with lovely looking 16s that then corroded badly) and servicing that any local garage can do. No reason to pay main dealer prices on such an old and basic car.

Tax is £270.

I’ll find a Mk3 to test for this time next year (the best looking in my view, but also the ‘chubby’ one with unfortunate middle-aged spread).

n RECIPE OF THE MONTH

Ann Murray is from the Cooking4 Cookery School based in Chipping Sodbury. She’s teamed up with Frome Valley Voice to pass on her wealth of experience in the kitchen.

This is a real pick-me-up IT’S fair to say that our lives are getting a little bit easier as the lockdown restrictions are being eased, but obviously we have a way to go yet. Much has been written about the long-term effects and how life will never be quite the same again. But, though I think about this, I really don’t want to go down that route here. Instead I’ve chosen one of my favourite Italian desert recipes, which is quick and easy to make – and the name of which translates as “lift me up”.

It was given to me by my best friend Patrick after he was taught it by his native Italian cookery teacher. Patrick sadly died almost six years ago, but every time I make this recipe I think of him and smile.

I hope that you will smile when you taste this, whether you are sharing it with a loved one, or multiply the ingredients for serving with friends.

Tiramisu Two words of warning and a tip: • Make sure you use very strong black coffee – preferably espresso, but if not that, then strong black coffee with a teaspoon of instant coffee added.

• This dessert needs to be well chilled, at least 6 hours in the fridge, so start preparing it in the morning for eating that night.

• You can use one large dish, but I think it presents better in individual glass dishes, my favourites being Martini glasses.

Serves 2 -3 depending on the size of the dishes used

Ingredients • Large organic eggs – 2, with yolks and whites in separate bowls • Caster sugar – 1oz (25g) • Mascarpone cheese – 125g • 3fl oz (75ml) very strong espresso coffee • Liqueur of choice – 1 ½ tbsp – I use Amaretto, but you can use brandy or dark rum • About 9 sponge fingers or Savoiardi biscuits (these are Italian and less sweet) • Good quality dark chocolate (75% cocoa solids) – 25g, chopped • Good quality cocoa powder (I like Green and Blacks) for dusting – about 1 dessert spoon • Chocolate cocoa beans for decoration- optional

• Now you are simply going to layer the dessert into your dishes, starting with the biscuits, then the mascarpone mix, then chocolate and repeat the layers until you have used all the ingredients. Finish with a layer of chocolate.

• So, first, dip the biscuits one at a time (not all together) into the coffee mixture. Quickly turn over once or twice, but don’t let them become soggy. (Break into 3 pieces if you are putting them into

individual dishes. Leave whole if you are using a large dish.)

•P ut immediately into your dish and then layer as explained above. Put more biscuits to soak as you need them.

•C over with cling film and refrigerate for several hours.

• I mmediately before serving, dust with sieved cocoa and grated chocolate. Don’t be tempted to do this earlier, as the cocoa will taste slightly stale.

Here’s What You Do: • Put the egg yolks and sugar in a bowl and beat with an electric mixer on high for about 3 mins until pale yellow and fluffy.

• Warm the mascarpone in a separate bowl using a microwave on medium for 30 seconds.

• Fold the mascarpone into the yolks, a tablespoon at a time, and then whisk thoroughly until there are no lumps.

• In a separate bowl, (with clean beaters) whisk the egg whites until they are stiff.

• Lightly fold the egg whites into the mascarpone mixture. Leave to one side.

• Add the liqueur to the coffee and put in a shallow oblong dish to fit the biscuits.

To assemble the dessert: • Have all the components to hand – the mascarpone egg mix, the coffee mixture, the biscuits, the chocolate,

Back in the swing of things CRICKETERS in the Frome Valley have been returning to action after losing half the season to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Frampton Cotterell Cricket Club started with an inter-club match.

Things weren’t quite back to normal though: players had a safety briefing before play, hands had to be sanitised after every six overs, the clubhouse was closed and players had to bring their own tea. Even the fall of wickets was greeted differently, with fielders not allowed the traditional high-five celebration because of social distancing.

Frampton, Winterbourne, Coalpit Heath and Hambrook are now busy playing friendlies, with a curtailed league programme starting in August.

Regional call-up for Zechariah WINTERBOURNE Tennis Club's Zechariah Hamrouni has been honoured by being selected as an LTA Avon regional player.

As a hard-working and skilful young player, the 13 year old's potential to develop into a future champion has been recognized by the Lawn Tennis Association.

Zechariah, one of 250 regional players across Britain, has been selected because of his achievements at national competitions. It means he will be eligible for a subsidised training programme, getting top coaching at regional player development

centres.

Each centre has a full-time head coach, who is focused on working with players aged 1014, and Zechariah will benefit from high-quality individual and squad coaching, maximum athletic development, playing alongside aspiring peers as well as playing national and international events. This is a fantastic opportunity for Zechariah that could prepare him for a place at a National Academy in the future.

Farewell to Joan AFTER three years of chairing Winterbourne Tennis Club's committee, Joan Ward is stepping down from her role due to other commitments.

Joan, who lives in Winterbourne, has been a member and regular player at

the tennis club for many years.

She has found time outside her successful professional career to be very active in the community, including the local church, singing in the choir, teaching piano and coaching juniors’ tennis.
