AHoosier at heart, Kelsey graduated from Indiana University in 2017 with a degree in Recreation & Tourism. She landed at Fripp last summer upon relocating to the area and working in the Group Sales office before making the jump over to Recreation this January. Aside from the wildlife on Fripp, She enjoys working here because no two days are the same and she’s able to connect with and create memorable experiences for people on a daily basis. A fun fact about Kelsey is that prior to taking this job, she had a phobia of snakes and reptiles, but now can’t get enough of them thanks to Kathryn and the naturalists!

Kathryn Schulz, hailing from Mountain View, Missouri, has always had a passion for wildlife and the outdoors. She pursued her interest by obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Wildlife Conservation and Management with an emphasis on forestry and environmental law. Kathryn has been working on Fripp Island for 1.2 years as the Head Naturalist, where she finds joy in encountering the diverse wildlife and socializing with new people. Growing up on a 120-acre farm, Kathryn developed an early fondness for the natural world that has continued throughout her life.

Summer is a time of transformation and new beginnings. As the temperatures rise and the days grow longer, we are inspired to break free from our usual routines and seek out fresh experiences. It’s a season of change, and a chance to embrace the unknown with open hearts and open minds. Let’s make the most of this summer by taking risks, exploring new places, and welcoming all the growth and adventure that comes our way.

Hello Club Members!

I heard Kendrick Perkins on NBA Today not too long ago talking about the word “vamoose.” It is not a word frequently heard, but it makes me smile every time I hear it. It reminds me of my mother and all of the fun times we had on Fripp’s beach in the summer. She would say such things as, “we had better vamoose, the tide is coming at us!” Another good one was “we had better vamoose, there is a storm rolling in!”

We hope you and your family can share old memories and make new ones this summer while enjoying all of the wonderful new additions being added to our list of offerings. The food trucks have proven to be quite popular, and so have new menu additions at the Bonito Boathouse. The Grub Club (formerly the Food Court) is slated to open around the first of June and will be completely renovated with different offerings for hungry beach goers. Along with new food and beverage venues, we have added Camelot Farms to our list of amenities. If you are ready for something different, try booking a horseback trail ride on the beach. Ocean Creek Head Pro Marshall Voight has put some tips together to help make the most of Summer golf here on Fripp!

Practicing putting is essential for any golfer who wants to improve their game. Here are some drills that can help you sharpen your skills on the greens:

Lag Putts: Place a ball at one end of the green and place a club three feet behind the hole. Try to lag it as close to the hole as possible without hitting the golf club as well as not finishing short of the hole. This drill helps you develop touch and distance control.

Gate Drill: Set up two tees just an inch or two wider than a golf ball and putt through the gate. This drill helps you practice hitting the ball on the correct line.

Clock Drill: Set up 12 balls around the hole like the numbers on a clock, with the closest ball at 3 feet and the farthest ball at 12 feet. Putt each ball in numerical order and try to make all 12 in a row.

One-Handed Putting: Practice putting with just your lead hand (left hand for right-handed players, right hand for left-handed players). This drill helps you develop feel and touch.

Uphill and Downhill Putts: Practice uphill and downhill putts to develop a better understanding of how the slope of the green affects your putts.

Remember, practice makes perfect, so don’t be afraid to spend time on the practice green. With consistent practice and these drills, you can improve your putting and lower your scores on the golf course.

Pickleball 3rd Shot

So much is made of the 3rd shot in pickle ball and for good reason. Often, the shot is key in determining the outcome of games. The service receiver should look to force their opponents to play the more difficult 3rd shot drop by following their return straight to the kitchen. Aiming down the middle not only makes for a high percentage direction and demands your opponent’s choose whose ball it is, it also limits the angle potential for the 3rd shot response. This tactic of repeated instant pressure often breaks down opponents over the course of a game. The serving team on the other hand, can make their 3rd shot easier with deep serves making the trip to net longer and more difficult for the returner. Here, the easier 3rd shot drive option will often catch the returner in the transition zone having to deal with the ball at their feet and making your trip to net less demanding. Give this a try and let me know how it goes!

Can you believe the Fripp Island Memorial Day Fishing Tournament started in 1992, and is entering its 31st year? We are grateful to this year’s sponsors Bryan Easler Toyota and The Dewitt Tilton Group. The tournament will kick off with a Captain’s Meeting Thursday, May 25 at 6pm. Fishing days are 26th-27th weather permitting. Weigh-in is from 4pm-6pm both days. Click here to view more info about the Memorial Day Fishing Tournament.

Below are some tips and tricks for fishing for Dolphin and Wahoo:

Dolphin fish love bright-colored, fast-moving lures, so remember to pack that hot pink or bright green dolphin feather in your tackle box. These fish typically hang around a weed line or flotsam in the water. Troll the edge of the weed line in one direction between 2 and 9 knots and then head back in the other direction. Be sure to vary your speed if you haven’t attracted any fish.

Wahoo can swim at least 60mph making the recommended trolling speeds 14 to 20 knots. The ideal trolling method for Wahoo is to zig-zag from roughly 150-foot depth out to 500 feet, essentially dragging the bait to act as baitfish being flushed off the banks with the tides.

Looking to use live bait? If fishing inshore, try live mud minnows & live shrimp for the best results. Good luck!

Activity Center Meet Willie, Spottie, and Caroline

Range and Behavior:

Our little cuties are a native here to the southeast and can easily be found hunting fiddler crabs in the salt marsh! Malaclemys terrapin (Diamondback Terrapins) are the only brackish water turtle found in North America, meaning they are tolerant to both fresh and saltwater. They are a federally protected and vulnerable species, which makes it super unique that the Activity Center is able to care for three of these turtles! Terrapins are naturally curious animals and so docile that you might even see one of our naturalists petting their heads! Because of their inquisitive nature, they are also often found in crab traps looking for an easy meal. However, this normally results in them being trapped and unable to escape; thus resulting in a serious injury. Luckily back in the 90’s a law was passed that required new crab traps to have a larger hole specifically designed for our terrapins to be able to swim through and not get trapped (take a look at the picture below, it’s the orange rectangle!). Make sure your crab trap has this extra hole to ensure the protection of this species!

Diet and reproduction:

Terrapins always seem to be hungry. They love eating worms, crabs, fish, really anything they are able to catch. Our three hoodlums love it when guests bring them fiddler crabs to chase and eat! Next time you are outside, be sure to grab them some dinner! Although Terrapins live mostly in the water, they also utilize the mud flats and beaches to bask in the sunlight, eat, and even lay their eggs! If you frequent the marina area of Fripp Island Resort during May-July, you might see some of the mothers come up and nest in the soil, rocks, or mulch (in some cases)!

Diamondback terrapins are such a joy to watch and learn more about. Stop by the Activity Center to meet them for our Meet the Animals program!

Shake Up Your Summer

Shake things up with us this summer and try something new at Fripp Island! Summer is the time of year when we are often reminded to slow down and be fully-engaged with everything around us. School is out, families come together for trips and vacations, and our schedules open up in anticipation of summer fun!

Fripp Island Golf and Beach Resort is in full swing for this summer, with a plethora of new activities and programs for our club members to enjoy. From horseback riding at Camelot Farms to Beaufort Photography Tours and newly-themed weeks at Camp Fripp for the kiddos, there is something for everyone to enjoy this summer.

One of the most exciting new offerings at Fripp Island is horseback riding at Camelot Farms. Located just a short drive from the resort, this idyllic equestrian center offers a variety of riding experiences for riders of all skill levels. Whether you’re a seasoned equestrian or a beginner looking to try something new, Camelot Farms has the perfect horse for you. Take a leisurely ride through the scenic plantation trails of Coffin Point, or take our beach ride for a more adventurous experience. You’ll take in the beauty of the area under moss-draped oaks, and enjoy the rush of wind through your hair down the coastline. Whatever you choose, you’re sure to have an unforgettable time.

For photography enthusiasts, we’re excited to be partnering this year with Beaufort Photography Tours for absolute must-dos. Led by local expert photographers, these tours will take you on a journey through the breathtaking surroundings of Fripp Island. Learn how to take stunning photos of the area’s iconic landmarks, including the picturesque sunrises, the starry skies of Fripp’s beach, and the area’s abundant wildlife. With tours available for all skill levels, there’s no better way to capture the beauty of our Lowcountry environment.

For families with children, Camp Fripp has introduced exciting new themed weeks for the summer. From Splish Splash Scallywags and Wild West themes to Spa Fripp and Mad Scientists, there’s a week-long adventure for every young adventurer. Kids will enjoy daily activities

such as arts and crafts, scavenger hunts, themed games, and more, all while making new friends and creating lasting memories.

This time of year is also about getting outside and being active. Our Fit on Fripp Fitness series will return this summer with enhanced programming including Pilates classes, Water Aerobics, Yoga, Boot Camp, and our special Full Moon Classes under the stars. Our energetic instructors will help you get the most out of your workout, no matter if you’re a beginner yogi or an accomplished athlete.

Of course, there are plenty of other activities to enjoy at Fripp Island, including member favorites like golfing, tennis and pickleball, swimming in resort pools, and sunbathing on our 3.5 miles of beach. But we hope these new programs provide even more excitement and adventure to your summer schedule here on Fripp Island!

Family favorites like the golf cart scavenger hunt, dodgeball (moving to Davis Love Park), trivia, 4x4 volleyball, poolside bingo, singo, and summer swim-in movies will return for our summer schedule. Nature programs also return, including Island Safari, Junior Naturalist, kayaking, and nature cruises! More details will be in our annual Summer Planning Guide, your one-stop shop for planning all of your Fripp fun, so stay tuned!

Food & Beverage

We are excited for all of the new changes coming this year to our food and beverage offerings!

The Big Fripp Dipper and High Tide Pizza food trucks are stationed on the Beach Club Greene to serve up delicious hot pizzas and ice cream to members and guests. These supplemental food and beverage offerings will help offset crowding and offer additional options for dining. The dough at High Tide Pizza is shipped directly from Italy and our sauce is house-made with hand-crushed San Marzano tomatoes. In addition to a variety of ice cream flavors, the Big Fripp Dipper truck features Dessert Nachos - waffle cone pieces topped with your choice of ice cream, covered with chocolate, caramel, and strawberry sauce, crowned with whipped cream. Yum!

In addition to the food trucks, the resort has updated its menus with new dishes and flavors. The Food Court is being renovated and will be introduced as The Grub Club, featuring takeand-bake options for guests to enjoy in the comfort of their own villas or homes. Fresh to-go sandwiches and salads will also be available for those on the go. Also expected to be available at the Grub Club will be new chicken and barbecue options, perfect for a satisfying and hearty meal after a day on the golf course or at the beach. The Grub Club will be opening in time for summer and we can’t wait for you to sample the newest options!

The Sandbar has also been completely repainted and is open for the season with new furniture. Look for new specialty cocktail options at the Sandbar and at Willies Wet Bar! We’ll have more live entertainment than ever, and have expanded that schedule include both Live at the Sandbar and the Cabana Club

With the onboarding of new Food and Beverage Director Anna Schell, we are also looking forward to increased menu offerings and a revamped wine list. Anna is a level I sommelier and has previous experience with The Cliffs, Sea Island Company, and Waldorf Astoria. Katherine Cruit has also come onboard as Food and Beverage Manager, overseeing the Beach Club, Bonito Boathouse, and Sandbar operations. Katherine’s industry tenure includes leadership roles with Emeril Lagasse’s restaurants including his flagship in Louisiana and Emeril’s Coastal in Florida.

With these exciting new additions to the food and beverage options at Fripp Island Golf and Beach Resort, you and your guests are sure to have a memorable and delicious dining experience!

Seasonal Recipe Lemon Orzo Salad with Chicken

Ingredients

• 1 Cup Uncooked Orzo

• 2 mini cucumbers (or 1/2 English Cucumber) chopped

• 1 cup little tomatoes (grape/cherry/etc.) cut into quarters

• 2 tablespoons red onion chopped

• 2 cups (loosely packed) fresh arugula

• 2 cups cooked/rotisserie chicken

• 1/2 cup feta cheese or freshly grated parmesan

• 2 tablespoons fresh basil sliced thin

Instructions:

Dressing:

• 1.5 tablespoons lemon juice + zest of 1 lemon

• 2.5 tablespoons olive oil

• 1 teaspoon honey

• 1 clove garlic minced

• salt/pepper to taste

1. Boil a salted pot of water and cook the orzo al dente according to package directions. Once it’s done, rinse it with cool water and let it drain thoroughly. Transfer to a large bowl.

2. Meanwhile, prep all the salad ingredients and add them to the bowl. If you’re not going to eat the salad right away, we suggest skipping the arugula.

3. Add the dressing ingredients to a jar or small bowl, and whisk/shake until well combined.

4. Toss the salad with the dressing. Add more lemon/oil if needed. We’d also add plenty of salt & pepper - there’s a lot of pasta in here, so you need to salt it well so it doesn’t taste bland.

5. Enjoy!
