In this hands-on workshop, participants will develop a portfolio filled with grade-appropriate art projects based on National Standards. All projects have been field-tested. The lessons can stand independently as artwork or be interrelated with other subject areas, if desired. A $10 Materials Fee is due to instructor at the beginning of class on the first day of the workshop. Participants will need to bring crayons, pencil, scissors, Elmer’s Glue-All (not Elmer’s School Glue) fine and ultra-fine black Sharpie markers and a package of 12x18” black construction paper.

2. Introduction to Bird Biology Dates: June 3-4 Grade Level: 6-12

Educators will be introduced to the basics of Avian Biology, including anatomy, morphology, principles of systematics and classification, evolution, ecology, and behavior. Laboratory and field exercises held on both days will emphasize the use of study skins, including the examination and measurement of anatomical characteristics (bills, wings, feathers, and feet), demonstration of the proper usage of optical equipment and field guides, as well as the application of techniques that are useful for competent classroom or field instruction in avian biology. Exercises will include field identification of local birds found in different habitats such as riparian areas (along rivers), prairies and grasslands, wetlands, and wooded areas.

Important note: Field-based activities will take place at off-campus facilities at a field station. Transportation to off-campus locations will be provided by University vehicles.

3. So Many Standards, So Little Time Dates: June 3-6 Grade Level: ALL

Sometimes it seems like there just is not enough time in the day to teach all the standards. Participants will be introduced to integrated lessons and activities that cover social studies, language arts, and art standards, which provide meaning and connection for all students. Additionally, the workshop will contain Kansas-themed activities, easily adapted to multiple grade levels. Authors and illustrators from Kansas will be visiting the class, as well. No artistic ability is necessary.

Think Art! Develop your creativity, find and practice your own personal style, advance your drawing and lettering skills, and boost your confidence as a creative individual through journaling. Participants will explore mixed media and collage techniques. Visual journaling is a powerful way to move beyond words in your daily reflections. Not only does working with images access a different part of our brains, it is a source of playfulness and creative joy. Visual journals offer an avenue to restore the spirit through self-expression and ignite creativity. A $10 materials fee will be due to the instructor the first day of the workshop. Participants will need to bring a sketchbook and markers, black fine-point and ultra-fine Sharpie markers, scissors, glue stick and one or two old magazines.

7. Beginning Oil Painting Dates: June 5-6 Grade Level: 6-12

We will discuss a variety of materials and techniques used to create an oil painting. Color mixing, composition, and oil techniques will be discussed and demonstrated. Please bring several options of photo references and your painting supplies to first class. Once you choose your reference, you will work on one painting for the duration of the class. Participants should provide the following supplies: titanium white, Naples yellow (2 oz), Indian yellow (2 oz), cadmium red, alizarin crimson, cobalt blue, Prussian blue, Van Dyke brown, sap green, linseed oil and turpenoid for oil painting, large and small brushes (sable or synthetic bristle), canvas panels or masonite board - suggested sizes: 11” x 14” or 16” x 20”. If you already have paint supplies, just bring your current materials.

This two-day graduate workshop will help you to gain a better understanding of the science of evolution, present the evidence upon which the Theory of Evolution is based, and provide you with the tools necessary to respond to opponents of teaching evolution in Kansas classrooms.

11. Creative Planners for the Right-Brained Thinker

Do you love your smart phone, but still need an actual piece of paper for your “to do” list? Have you ever wondered why Day Planners don’t work for you? Are you a right-brained thinker in a left-brained world? In this workshop we will consider the use of mind-mapping and other creative techniques to develop a workable method of planning and organization. Participants will begin with the standard-ruled composition book and develop a personalized planner designed for the creative-minded, coloroutside-the-line type of folks who typically see their days in random sequences and rarely in straight lines. Participants will acquire valuable strategies to help creative students develop organizational techniques. A $5 materials fee will be due to the instructor the first day of the workshop. Participants also need to bring a composition book, a ball point pen, pencil, thick and thin colored markers, scissors, and a UHU glue stick. Optional: gel pens, black Sharpie Pen (different than Sharpie marker).

Edible science – that’s an idea! Use food to teach simple science principles. Labs also work well to introduce concepts in high school. The overarching emphasis of this unique workshop is the well-being of the individual teacher in his/her professional role of protector, counselor, mentor, colleague, medic, cheerleader, entertainer, and techno-whiz. It encompasses four overlapping and timely components: wellness, readiness, personal-safety awareness, and first aid for the soul. The focus of this ideagenerating time is not only on our collective responses as educators, but also on personal options as individuals. Supportive tools and techniques are explored, options for threatening situations are considered, and specific circumstances are examined.

In order to thrive, we must first survive—internally, externally, collectively, and contextually. Dress comfortably for light movement.

Everyone loves a field trip! We will begin our journey on Wednesday morning, meeting on the Friends campus. We will then travel to Fort Scott, Osawatomie, Olathe and Fairway. We will spend the night in the KC area. On Thursday, we are off to Lawrence, Lecompton, and Fort Riley before returning to Wichita that evening. Participants will get acquainted with fellow travelers, enjoy good food and accommodations, and visit some of the important pre-statehood sites in Kansas history.

Teachers will return to their classrooms with new insights and enthusiasm for the interesting history of our state. Teachers will approach lesson planning and event planning of Kansas History with a new perspective and insight. Transportation will be provided. Participants will be required to pay for additional expenses which include overnight hotel fees, gas, meals, and extras. (Reservations will be made by the instructor for overnight accommodations). Participants will return at 5:00 p.m. on June 13, Thursday.

We will provide ideas across-the-curriculum and demonstrate to participants that reading aloud is essential to the literate lives of students. 28. Using Dogs for Educational and Therapeutic Change Dates: June 17-20 Grade Level: ALL

Using animals to effect changes with students and adults alike is becoming increasingly popular. This workshop focuses on the use of dogs in an educational or therapeutic setting. Participants will learn how to select, train and care for appropriate working dogs, as well as learn about the ethical guidelines necessary for using dogs in a professional setting. Other benefits will be discussed, including using dogs to increase positive social interactions among students, increasing student connectedness, and creating a positive learning atmosphere in a school or counseling situation. Advanced training techniques and grooming practices that enhance any therapy dog program will be demonstrated. Guest speakers will share their experiences and new curriculum ideas will be presented to increase student achievement and positive emotional growth. It is not necessary for participants to own a dog to participate in this workshop. Participants in this workshop will take the next step with iPads and similar technologies to incorporate the use of educational apps in their instruction times and in their own student-generated works. Participants will create their own lessons to take back to their classroom, be able to demonstrate to their students how they can use the technology in their own work, and create their own document camera stand for their iPad. Participants should have a working knowledge of the basics of iPads, app downloading, etc. before taking this class.

During this workshop, learn about the juxtaposition of prehistoric people and their environment. Try your hand at using prehistoric tools that were used for hunting, fishing, cooking, and building houses – you can even make your own tool to take home! The final project consists of creating a program manual on primitive technology that makes the complex processes of primitive tool making easily understood by school children. Friends University Summer On-campus Housing

All individuals participating in Friends University’s summer graduate workshops are invited to stay in Green Residence Hall, one of Friends University’s on-campus facilities, for $20 per person per night. Housing is available from June 1-August 1, with the exception of a few days.

Green Residence Hall is divided into suites, with each suite containing three two-person bedrooms, a kitchen (including full refrigerator and microwave), two bathrooms and a living area. Suites contain furniture (beds, mattresses, etc.) but no linens are provided. Thus, all individuals are responsible for bringing their own sheets, towels, toiletries, etc. Local phone service, elevators, internet (hard-line connection, computer with Ethernet cord and cable are required), TV lounges, vending machines and laundry rooms are also available. The use of tobacco and alcohol is prohibited in all University facilities. Pets are not allowed in any buildings.

Individuals wishing to stay in Green Hall must sign up in advance and pay the full amount of their deposit before or upon move-in. To check on availability and sign up for these housing accommodations, please call the Office of Community and Residential Development at 316-295-5500. Green Residence Hall is located at 710 S. St. Clair.

FRIENDS UNIVERSITY All workshops are offered for graduate-level credit and available to licensed educators. These workshops are recommended for re-licensure, along with post-graduate and professional development purposes. To register: Complete and detach the pre-registration form below. Tuition is $150 per credit hour. All online classes include an additional $30 per credit technology fee in the tuition price.

No pre-registrations will be taken the first day of the workshop. All pre-registration must be completed prior to the start of the workshop.

An e-mail reminder with a class-specific map will be sent the week before the start of the workshop.

No refunds will be issued beginning one week prior to the workshop start date. A $25 cancellation fee per credit will be assessed on all

refunds requested. If the minimum number of participants do not enroll, the workshop will be cancelled, whereupon you will be

notified and a full refund will be given.

All workshops will be letter-graded. As a result, projects/assignments will be assessed. Unofficial grade letters will be mailed out by

Registrar after the grades have been posted to transcript.
