In this hands-on workshop, participants will develop a portfolio filled with grade-appropriate art projects based on National Standards. All projects have been field-tested. The lessons can stand independently as artwork or be interrelated with other subject areas, if desired. A $10 Materials Fee is due to instructor at the beginning of class on the first day of the workshop. Participants will need to bring crayons, pencil, scissors, Elmer’s Glue-All (not Elmer’s School Glue) fine and ultra-fine black Sharpie markers and a package of 12x18” black construction paper.
2. Introduction to Bird Biology Dates: June 3-4 Grade Level: 6-12

Educators will be introduced to the basics of Avian Biology, including anatomy, morphology, principles of systematics and classification, evolution, ecology, and behavior. Laboratory and field exercises held on both days will emphasize the use of study skins, including the examination and measurement of anatomical characteristics (bills, wings, feathers, and feet), demonstration of the proper usage of optical equipment and field guides, as well as the application of techniques that are useful for competent classroom or field instruction in avian biology. Exercises will include field identification of local birds found in different habitats such as riparian areas (along rivers), prairies and grasslands, wetlands, and wooded areas. Important note: Field-based activities will take place at off-campus facilities at a field station. Transportation to off-campus locations will be provided by University vehicles.
