Friends University Mission We are informed by the Quaker heritage of Friends University. We also are rooted both in the liberal arts tradition and in the Christian intellectual tradition. Because of these roots, we insist that our students learn, inside and outside the classroom, to integrate their intellectual lives with their social and spiritual lives in ways that will improve the world. College of Business, Arts, Sciences and Education The College of Business, Arts, Sciences and Education offers students a traditional college experience with liberal arts and professional programs that represent a broad range of academic majors.

The Fine Arts Division exists for the creation and study of the arts. We provide students educational and creative experiences that integrate professional artistic standards with the academic inquiry of the liberal arts and Christian intellectual traditions. Students and faculty develop their craft and vocation while engaging audiences and serving the community.

Dedicated faculty guide instruction in a comprehensive undergraduate curriculum, mentoring students to experience the transforming power of the arts and to excel in their profession.

Excellence in the Fine Arts Fine Arts Guest Artists We bring a variety of guest musicians, choreographers and artists to work and perform with our students and faculty. The Ballet program has brought dancers from the New York City Ballet and the Houston Ballet, as well as guest choreographers like Nick Blaylock and Dominic Walsh. Some of the jazz guest performers have included The New York Voices, Matt Wilson, Bobby Watson, and the Count Basie Orchestra. We host guest artists like Steven T. Johnson on our campus and invite local and regional artists to exhibit their work in our art galleries. Conductors such as Dr. Joshua Habermann and Elena Sharkova have worked with our choral students. Our instrumental students have been able to work with conductors-in-residence such as Robert Sheldon and Sean O’Louglin.

A commitment to invite guest artists to campus exposes our students and faculty to creativity and innovation that is occurring in the Arts today. It also serves as a valuable source of inspiration and a model for student success in the Arts.

Fine Arts Quick Facts • One-third of undergraduate students participate in Friends University’s Fine Arts, resulting in a vibrant, creative culture.

• Recent performances at the Havana Jazz Festival in Cuba, the Jazz Education Network Conference in Atlanta, the Kansas Music Educators Association Conference and the Wichita Symphony Orchestra provide a variety of performance experience.

• Faculty actively create and perform in and around Wichita.

• Partnerships with area graphics, marketing and performing arts organizations for internships and out-of-the-classroom learning opportunities for students.

• Student artists exhibit in Wichita galleries.

• Jazz combos perform in Wichita venues.

• The Fine Arts has more than 50 concerts, performances, theatre productions and art exhibits annually.

• Student musicians and actors perform in Wichita churches, schools and concerts.

• More than 20 guest musicians, choreographers and artists visit campus annually to perform and create with students and faculty.

22ND ANNUAL JAZZ FESTIVAL Feb. 20-21, 2015 Riney Fine Arts Center Join the Friends University Jazz department for a day of great music and learning.

Guest artists perform masterclasses and work with student jazz groups from across the state. The Festival also includes a Jazz Vocal Invitational concert Feb. 20. The festival ends with the headliner concert in Sebits Auditorium Feb. 21.

ART CHALLENGE March 6, 2015 Garvey Art Center Join the Friends University Art Department for their 11th Annual Art Challenge. This event consists of a juried art competition, professional artists’ workshops and hands-on competitions for students. The competitive exhibition is designed to recognize artistic talent at the high-school level (grades 9-12) within the state of Kansas, and can even lead to scholarship offers. Visual Arts A major in the visual arts at Friends University allows students the opportunity to study studio art (drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics or photography) and graphics arts. Skilled faculty teach creativity and design as a foundation of the curriculum with an expectation that all students will create a professional portfolio as a result of their study and work. Students experience hands-on work in the studio or computer lab along with opportunities for out-of-the-classroom learning through international travel and exhibiting their work on campus and in area galleries.

Ballet The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ballet degree is designed to foster excellence in preparation for a professional career in the world of ballet with opportunities for additional studies in teaching, administration and therapy. Each ballet degree plan can be uniquely designed for individual students depending on interest, ability and goals. A dance minor is offered for students seeking a major in another discipline.

Our goal is to offer a ballet education that creates talented performing artists so they may achieve their future goals and become confident leaders in their profession. Final projects are designed to propel students into creative, successful careers. A nurturing and supportive environment, combined with professional ballet training, enables dancers to reach their full potential physically as their passion for arts education increases.

Friends University’s ballet department involves a number of guest artists, teachers and choreographers each year. Our repertoire includes ballets by George Balanchine, Twyla Tharp, Dominic Walsh, Shawn Stevens and many others. We are committed to introducing our dancers to current artists in the world of dance at large.

Symphony of Spring, 2014

Choral and Vocal Music

Choral music has been at the heart of the Fine Arts program at Friends University since the University’s inception. Choral ensembles include students from all disciplines and are part of a comprehensive vocal program which includes music theatre and opera productions, choral-orchestral masterworks, and national and international tours. Friends University choirs are frequently invited to perform at the Kansas Music Educators Association annual convention and to collaborate with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra. Each year selected high school choirs are invited to the Choral Connections festival to join forces with Friends University choirs to study and perform under the baton of internationally-renowned specialists in choral music. The choral and vocal faculty regularly offer out-of-the-classroom learning experiences through national and international touring, opera study experiences in Germany and performing at professional music education conferences throughout the Midwest and Southeast.

Ensembles have performed across the United States and Canada, as well as Europe, Australia and New Zealand. The Singing Quakers, the oldest musical organization at Friends University, has also been featured on national television and has performed at the White House, Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Instrumental Music Instrumental Music is a vibrant part of the division. Students from across campus, regardless of major, have an opportunity to learn and perform in a variety of wind or string ensembles. The Concert Band collaborates regularly with guest artists and composers to perform some of the greatest new and standard literature from the wind band repertoire. The Chamber Orchestra performs string literature and collaborates regularly with guest soloists and serves as the orchestra for opera productions bi-annually. Friends University Community Orchestra includes students and community members in large orchestra. Chamber ensembles - including the Percussion Ensemble, Flute Choir and a number of quartets, quintets and trios - provide students another learning opportunity for great music. Instrumental ensembles regularly perform at the Kansas Music Educators Association annual convention.

Jazz The jazz department is unique in the opportunities it provides for playing and studying jazz in a small university setting. Students participate in a variety of jazz ensembles, including two big bands, a jazz vocal ensemble, several jazz combos, jazz improvisation class and applied lesson faculty for all jazz instruments. Each spring Friends University hosts a two-day festival for school jazz ensembles and jazz choirs. Students from across Kansas come to work with leading jazz educators and hear outstanding jazz musicians in concert. Out-of-the-classroom learning experiences include working with nationally recognized guest artists, performing in venues throughout Wichita, and international touring and travel (Havana Cuba Jazz Festival, 2012).

Theatre

The Wakefield Mysteries, 2014

The Bachelor of Arts in Theatre offers a broad-based program of study combining a liberal arts education with a general theatre curriculum.

Typically, a theatre major chooses not to specialize in any one area of the art form, but prefers to keep educational options open. The theatre environment can be quite competitive and you will learn to solve problems using critical thought processes in creative ways. Theatre means you’re working with others intimately and independently, you are goal oriented, a selfstarter and you have respect for deadlines. But above all, you have fun!

Four main stage productions and several student-directed projects provide ample opportunity to be involved performing on stage or assisting backstage.

Ticket Information TICKET AND PERFORMANCE INFORMATION All programs, artists, ticket prices, dates and times are subject to change without notice. For questions or more information about any of our policies or events, please call the Fine Arts Office at 316-295-5677.

PURCHASING TICKETS All tickets must be paid for at the time of ordering.

Individual tickets will go on sale beginning Sept. 1, 2014. Tickets may be purchased online at friends. edu/finearts, by submitting the form on the next page, in the Fine Arts Office during business hours (M-F, 8 a.m. - Noon, 1-5 p.m.), by calling the Box Office at 316-295-5677 and at the door 45 minutes prior to a performance, as long as tickets are still available.

SEASON TICKETS Season tickets are available for Singing Quakers or a “Pick 4” package. Each subscription will include one ticket to each performance in the package at a 10 percent discount. The Singing Quakers package will include all three Singing Quakers performances for the season. The “Pick 4” package will include any four performances of your choice during the season. Season tickets will go on sale Aug. 11, 2014, and can be ordered in the same way as individual tickets. Orders are processed in the order they’re received, and the best available seats will be given to each customer. Guests wishing to sit together should order together.

PAYMENT METHODS We accept cash, check, MasterCard, Visa, Discover and American Express credit cards. All off-campus performances will only accept cash and checks at the door.

TICKET EXCHANGES We cannot give refunds for purchased tickets!

Tickets may only be exchanged one time for another performance of the same show. These may only be exchanged during regular business hours (M-F, 8 a.m. - Noon, 1-5 p.m.) or by calling the Box Office at 316-295-5677.

PERFORMANCE TIMES AND GUIDELINES We strive to start all of our performances on time as a courtesy for the artists and patrons.

Seating after the start of any performance is at the discretion of the house manager, according to the wishes of the artists and director. No cameras or recording devices are permitted during a performance. Crying, noisy and fussy children are disruptive to the audience and the artists. Please promptly remove them from the auditorium.

Please inquire when purchasing tickets if a performance is suitable for children. All children must have a ticket, and children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
