A Message from Janet Wardle as the Outgoing Chairman of the FOST Isn’t it wonderful that the theatre is now back to normal? A great deal of hard work has gone into making this happen, and I am very proud to have been part of it. But –there is always a but!- I feel that this is a good time for me to step down as FOST Chairman, and carry on being one of the volunteers in the box office. Having served on the committee for so long, it is going to be very hard for me to not be involved! I have met some wonderful people at all kinds of events representing Shanklin Theatre and enjoyed every moment. However, the time has come, and in preparation for the future, the committee and I have reorganised the structure of FOST as a whole, and put in place a more robust system. I know I am leaving everything in the right hands to go forward and bring new ideas and events to us all. Regards, Janet.
A personal thank you to Janet from Michael Beston as incoming FOST Chairman Janet has successfully led and chaired the FOST committee for the last four years after taking over from David Kast in May 2018. I first got to know Janet back in 2006 when we were both connected to the then Shanklin Christmas Festival held each December. Janet subsequently began volunteering in the Box Office in 2010 when paper reigned over computers and show tickets were handwritten for each and every customer, a far cry from where the Box Office is today! Janet has guided the committee and volunteers through various theatre procedural, policy and operational changes, both professionally and robustly but always with integrity in her sometimes formidable style. Even through the Covid dark days, Janet stepped up to the plate and took on board the technology through Zoom virtual meetings to keep the committee in constant contact with each other. Janet, you will be missed, but I thank you for your help, commitment and guidance over the last four years. Enjoy your hard earned and deserved break, best regards, Mike. 2|Page

Thank you for reading our June edition of the ‘Stage Write’ magazine. I sincerely hope that you are keeping well and safe. On Monday 23rd May at 7.30pm, the Annual General Meeting of the Friends of Shanklin Theatre took place. The agenda included annual reports from Janet Wardle as the outgoing FOST Chairman, the Treasurer’s report from Peter Frankling and Membership report from Jacqui Robertson. Janet also set out the proposed minor changes to the FOST Constitution and the ratification of the newly formed FOST Executive Committee for 2022-2023. David Kast; the Shanklin Theatre Managing Director gave a few words on all the proposed changes. I’m delighted to announce, that after agreement from our FOST Membership, the new FOST Committee has been ratified for the next 12 months. These appointments are: Chairman – Michael Beston. Vice Chairman – Lionel Whitehead. Secretary – Liz Hinkes. Volunteer Liaison Officer – Suzie Thurgood. Membership Secretary – Jean Osmond. Treasurer – Peter Frankling. Promotional Officer – Jacqui Robertson. Fund Raising Officer – Lesley Kast. On behalf of the FOST Executive Committee, thank you for your confidence in electing us as the new executive committee, we look forward to working for you and the theatre over the coming year. Shanklin Theatre is on the Wight Path! As part of the Isle of Wight Walking festival, our volunteers organised two very different walks: the ‘Bay Day and Night’ and the ‘Bluebell Quest from Shanklin’. The 7 mile ‘Bay Day and Night’ walk on Monday 9th May highlighted entertainment past and present in Shanklin and Sandown Bay. 16 walkers from the mainland and the Isle of Wight joined our volunteers Sammantha, Sarah and Jacqui on this narrated walk. One of the main stops was Shanklin Theatre where walkers enjoyed a well-deserved cup of tea and a piece of cake prepared by the catering team. Rob Robertson gave a talk on the Theatre past and present after which the walkers continued their journey, returning to their starting point tired but happy! Above & below – our group of walkers along the Revetment at Sandown and on a well deserved refreshment stop at the theatre

Although the Internet provided a lot of background details for the walk, personal stories added invaluable snippets of information which were added to the talks at various places of interest. Vic Farrow provided memories about his De Luxe Cinema in Lake, fondly remembered by many for its singing puppets during the interval. Ron Dallimore, barman at the Shanklin Hotel Beachcomber bar in the 70s, told of many goings-on there including Sidney, the caiman crocodile and Coco, the parrot. Roger Coleman shared his memories of the various cinemas and nightclubs such as Zanies and Colonel Bogey’s in Sandown. Sammantha’s friend certainly added invaluable tales of the 70’s in Shanklin where, for example, you could get free entry to the pier if you were wearing hotpants!

Rylstone Chalet is home to the Shanklin Town Brass Band. This Grade II listed building provides much needed space not only for the band rehearsals, but also the Saturday Morning Brass Academy. The building is based on the design of the Swiss Cottage in the grounds of Osborne House in East Cowes, the former home of Queen Victoria. The Chalet has most recently been used as the home of the Isle of Wight Natural History and Archaeology Society. Prior to that it was used as tea rooms and cafe. Internal framed pictures from the early 20th Century show bands playing outside the chalet whilst refreshments were served from the 6|Page
veranda. Some visitors have remarked that they remember having tea on the balcony as a child! The Chalet building is owned by the IW Wight Council and leased to the Town Band. The building has undergone a full restoration by the Band volunteers who are now responsible for its future maintenance and upkeep. If you want to know more, why not join us in October for the autumn walking festival when this walk will be repeated. The second walk ‘Bluebell Quest from Shanklin’ took place on Wednesday 11th March. Our volunteers Heather and Jacqui helped by Rod, Andy and Bertie the dog, guided 20 walkers on this 9.5mile hike up Shanklin Downs, down to Wroxall, up to Appuldurcombe, the Donkey sanctuary the railway path and back to Shanklin Theatre via Sibden Hill without forgetting a loop through America Wood.
In spite of the wind and drizzle, our quest was successful and we saw hills carpeted with bluebells and amazing woodland ‘gardens’ full of wild garlic, bluebells, campion and many other flowers for which I don’t know the names. It was a bit wet for a picnic lunch outside so we sought refuge in a room at Appuldurcombe house. On our way, Andy found the time to fix a lady’s bicycle and received a round of applause from the group. 7|Page
One of the walkers was from New York, a long way from Shanklin! He had a personal project to walk around 26 islands, each one starting by a letter of the alphabet. He already has completed 9 island walks travelling all over the world. The Isle of Wight (W) was the right size for his project and after finding the

Isle of Wight Walking Festival website decided to join us on this walk. I believe the walkers enjoyed their day and donated generously at the end of each one. The 2 walks raised £150 in donations and £50 from the refreshments for the Friends of Shanklin Theatre. Many thanks to all for making these walks a success: Heather Whitchurch, Rod Brown, Andy Bailey and his dog Bertie, Sammantha Cave and her friend, Sarah Bucher-Jones, Robert Robertson, Roger Coleman, Vic Farrow, Ron Dallimore. Orpheus Rocks and More! The First Act Theatre Company Putting on an Entertaining Show This lovely review comes courtesy of Maureen Sullivan. ‘I took my seat at Shanklin Theatre for the first show in a threeperformance run feeling slightly puzzled. I’d heard of Orpheus – but not that he rocked – and what was the ‘And More’? I was to find out in an incredibly energetic, entertaining show… ‘The first half was dedicated to telling the Greek story of Orpheus and Eurydice, set to rock music! Orpheus, played superbly by Christopher Ayers, even sported an electric guitar! His love for Eurydice, played by the talented Maggie Murthwaite, and hers for him was beautifully portrayed, as was Orpheus’s despair at losing her to the Underworld, a plot hatched by Hades, King of the Underworld – Ashleigh Jones’s villainous laughter was a real treat. ‘Rachel Stone was the perfect choice for Hermes, our guide and narrator – her clarity of voice and enthusiasm for the story drew the audience in. David Davis’s tea-drinking Charon was a delight too, as was James Soley’s cameo as Apollo. The ensemble portrayals of various creatures who haunt the Underworld were also wonderfully performed – SarahLouise McEvoy, Kim Reader and Jade Hornbuckle were hilarious as three witches arguing over their single shared eye, and I especially enjoyed the taunting of the Furies set to Madness’s One Step Beyond! ‘Without giving away the ending I have to say it was emotional….but there was more to come.

‘The second half of the programme was a cabaret ‘Party’, packed with songs and fun showcasing each of the talented First Act members. ‘Following their success in lead roles in the first half, Christopher and Maggie both proved their prowess as dancers, while Ashleigh shed his baddie image as Hades, to be a comedian! Jamie Topham meanwhile showed us some great magic tricks. ‘There were some lovely singers too, covering a range of eras and styles, from Al Wyman’s ‘Come Back Liza’ and Kim Reader’s ‘Blue Hawaiian’ through Sarah and James duetting on ‘Whole New World’ to an ‘ABBA Mix-Up’ featuring Wendy Todd, Lisa Carter, Trish Kent and David Davis. The finale, ‘New York, New York’ set the audience clapping and singing along, as did the final dance to ‘Everybody Dance’. The song that really summed up the show for me though was Immie Sivell’s ‘We Are the Champions’ – each and every one of the actors on stage is indeed a champion, as are the tutors and supporters- they have all clearly not only put in a huge amount of work and rehearsal time but have delighted the audience with their enthusiasm for the show. ‘I for one enjoyed it hugely and am already looking forward to their next production, ‘Beauty and the Beast’ in November’. First Act 2011 is a theatre company for individuals with disability. Based at Shanklin Theatre, the members of First Act meet weekly to participate in drama, dance and singing workshops and rehearsals.

Grand Prize Draw – 7th May 2020 On Saturday 7th May, Sandy Ciccognani was our guest at the Coffee, Cake and Chat morning here at the theatre. Sandy is the Isle of Wight Volunteer Centre Manager. She briefly explained that her role is to marry volunteer opportunities to potential volunteers across the Island. She encourages volunteer organisations to register their opportunities on the volunteer website: www.iwvolunteer.org for potential volunteers to have a look. In addition, she organises island wide volunteer fairs which are very popular. Monthly themed articles are also placed in the County Press promoting vacancies. The Coffee Cake and Chat was well attended and visitors appreciated the lovely cakes provided by the Catering team. At 11.30am, Sandy proceeded to draw the 7 winners of our Grand Prize Draw with prizes ranging from £500 to £50. See over for full details.

The team is a dedicated group of volunteers who work well together selling Draw tickets before shows. Prize draw tickets are £1 each and available to purchase during evening shows in the auditorium, at the Box Office when open, at the monthly Coffee Cake and Chat and at some external events attended by FOST. Bucket Collection Report
February 2022 £677.22 - 12 shows March 2022 £628.66 - 10 shows April 2022 £1048.86 - 19 shows Although people are not using cash so much, our bucket collections are still doing well, thanks to Craig Revel Horwood’s first sell-out performance at our theatre raising £105. Sir Ranulph Fiennes’s journey through his amazing life filled the theatre and collected £155. Returning artistes were The Fureys - £119; The Manfreds - £152; Beyond the Barricade - £94; and Al Murray - £83. Ian Ashpitel and Jonty Stephens were a huge hit recreating the iconic Morecambe and Wise sketches we all love. Their evening raised £91. With our new summer programme, starting in May, it’s time to book all your favourite shows: Spotlight’s Beyond the West End, opening 17th May and continuing until 20th October, and Island Savoyard’s 50th Anniversary Gala on the 11th June is not to be missed. This summer has lots of famous names in comedy, music and tribute acts. Walk 4 Fun A gang of 12 ‘Walk4Fun’ walkers and 2 dogs found their way to the Coffee Cake and Chat at Shanklin Theatre held on Saturday 5th March. After a few miles under their feet, they enjoyed well deserved refreshments of tea/coffee and homemade cakes served in the Map room by the volunteer catering team. The Walk4Fun IOW Walking Group are an active walking group who’s motive is to have: ‘Fun walks, pushing ourselves a bit, good exercise and making new friends.’ If you are interested in walking for fun, meeting fellow walkers and making new friends and require more information, please visit their very active Facebook Group of nearly 700 members by searching @WALK4FUN.

Welcome to Billie’s Blog Billie is a volunteer in the Box Office having previously worked in various roles in two busy theatres in Essex. She has a passion for theatre that started with amateur dramatics for many years playing on stage and managing back stage. With both her sons and her daughter-in-law as professional actors and performers, Billie is often supporting them at many different theatres and she especially loves to visit the older beautiful buildings. Her hobbies include bell ringing and she rings at various church towers on the island. Do you watch The Repair Shop? Have you ever loaned something and had it returned broken or damaged? I once loaned a very old piece of music belonging to my grandfather to a drama club for their show. I was horrified to have it returned with fake blood spilt all over the front of it! Maybe I should contact The Repair Shop. Well, that’s exactly what Shanklin Theatre have done recently- contacted the Repair Shop for their help to rectify an embarrassing situation. Fortunately, a friend of the theatre, Tony King has been very gracious and understanding after he loaned our Theatre some posters, having lovingly kept them for many years, when a water leak at the theatre damaged the largest and most precious of the posters. So let’s have a closer look at the poster in question and some well-known names on it and then concentrate on one name on this poster that may not be so familiar and the background story behind it. Firstly, top of the bill George Formby! Awarded an OBE and although an actor, singer-songwriter and comedian who became known for his films of the 1930s and 1940s, he was mostly remembered for his comical songs whilst playing the ukulele.

Next is Florrie Forde, originally from Australia but from 1897 she lived and worked in the UK, a very popular singer and music hall entertainer singing such songs as “Oh No Antonio!” and “Down at the old Bull and Bush” Now, a name that keeps cropping up on various posters, including this one, is Joe Hastings, a ventriloquist and not to be confused with his father, also Joe Hastings - a jumper! A jumper? Yes, let’s start with Joe Hastings senior. He was billed as “the greatest jumper the world has seen!” Without any trampoline or any aids, he would for example, jump from a single brick, up and over a pile of seven chairs! He would also jump over two chairs 26 feet apart and other amazing feats in jumping and was known as the human kangaroo! And all this began when he was spotted playing leap-frog at the age of 13. Joe married a singer, Clara Melling and they had three children; the two boys went on to follow in their parents’ Show Business footsteps. 23 | P a g e
One of Joe’s friends was the amazing ‘Doctor’ Walford Bodie, the Scottish showman, hypnotist, ventriloquist and stage magician famous for his "mock" electrocutions involving a replica of "The Electric Chair”. He taught Joe’s son ventriloquism who immediately loved it and excelled at it. So, at an early age the younger Joe Hastings soon joined the circuit of show business, starting in the Midlands and then touring the UK. Young Joe was soon signed with Moss Empires. This was a company formed in Edinburgh in 1899, from the merger of the theatre companies owned by Sir Edward Moss, Richard Thornton and Sir Oswald Stoll. They created the largest chain of variety theatres and music halls in the United Kingdom and the business was so successful, they had major variety theatres in almost every city in Britain and Ireland, and were advertised as the largest group in the world. While young Joe’s brother became a clown in Billy Smart’s circus, Joe himself developed an act playing Dick Turpin with his ventriloquist doll Freddie The Ostler. Young Joe’s wife was able to join him in the act too as a singer under the name of Miss Shirley so they were able to work and travel together. It’s probably just as well that they never had children. Joe was in great demand and worked tirelessly up and down the country performing in shows with stars such as Max Miller, Flanagan & Allen, Billy Cotton and his band, Hylda Baker, Ann Blythe, the amazing dancers The Nicholas Brothers and none other than 24 | P a g e
Vera Lynn to name just a few. Amazingly, Joe’s nephew Tony still has many immaculate posters showing Joe’s name along with these. After the war, the popularity of Music Halls began to decline and many were converted to Bingo Halls and Cinemas. Joe decided to diversify into comedy and changed his name to Joe Baxter. He performed as the Comedian in several pantomimes, became a children’s entertainer and magician for private parties and in his later years even performed Punch and Judy at Chessington Zoo until his death in 1962 of lung cancer. He was just 61 years old. But what a full life he had! From his childhood days Joe showed talent and while watching his mother sing, you would hear, “Go on Joey, sing!” but he would only perform when he was ready. In 1920, he was fortunate to be able to perform with his parents in their own show “Crack a Whip!” that was complete with animals such as horses and bears, and entertainers such as Sid Field. His last work was a scene at the beginning of the Tony Hancock film, “The Punch and Judy Man”. Sadly, Joe died before later scenes were completed and he was never credited on the film. Has Show Business continued in the family? Unfortunately, nobody in the family followed up a career in entertainment so, after Joe’s death, his brother Bernard sold Joe’s ventriloquist dummy to the renowned ventriloquist Valentine Vox where it is now exhibited in his museum in Las Vegas. 25 | P a g e
Joe’s nephew, Tony is very proud of the family connection and as previously mentioned, he has many posters and photos and a few years ago he kindly loaned a few of the posters to the Theatre to add to the character of the building where these have been proudly displayed.
Unfortunately, after a storm, it was noticed that water had run down and damaged the largest poster dated 1938. Obviously this is devastating and very upsetting and disappointing for Tony. The Theatre is trying to find a way to have the poster restored and thanks Tony for his patience and understanding. Will The Repair Shop accept this challenge? Watch this space! Billie.
