Friends of Kids with Cancer is devoted to enriching the daily lives of children undergoing treatment for, and survivors of, cancer and blood-related diseases.
Our mission is to be an advocate for these special kids
and provide them and their families with the educational, emotional and recreational support needed as a result of the long hours of chemotherapy, illness and isolation. 2

Letter from the Executive Director [SUPPORTERS] ARE THE INSPIRATION that drives us as we strive to reach every one of our families to ensure they know our
“once a friend, always a friend” approach.
TO THE FRIENDS OF KIDS WITH CANCER COMMUNITY AND FAMILY, This past year was a special celebration as we reflected on 30 years of Friends. Reoccurring themes that signified the many years of success included countless smiles, impactful growth and memories created that will last forever. But as we studied our past, we also excitedly ushered in a new era. The deep-rooted impact on our community is proof of how Friends fosters hope. The vision, passion and dedication of this organization is steadfast and reassures the strength in our mission. We are tremendously thankful to our volunteers and donors for continuing to believe in the work we do every day for our families with a purpose-driven approach. The fuel that keeps us going are the incredible testimonials, thank you notes, pictures and stories we receive from our patient families about what their experience with Friends has been like. In 2022, these stories were filled with relief as the increased hardships of the pandemic seemed to lessen and we were able to move into more regular connections. Reinforcing our “Once a friend, always a friend” approach is extremely important to us and will continue to be our focus. 2
The most significant compliment to Friends always will be the incredible number of families who give back, and their continued involvement no matter where they are on their journey. As we celebrate these accomplishments, we wish to emphasize endlessly that we cannot do this work alone, and we need our partners with us. TH E POWE R O F TH I N K , FEEL & S M I LE Friends of Kids with Cancer helps cultivate mental well-being with Educational, Emotional, and Recreational programs that help children, and their families, cope with the daily challenges they face with a cancer diagnosis. Families are supported with specialized Think, Feel, & Smile programming to suit the needs of each family member in order to retain a sense of normalcy and maintain childhood.
Friends of Kids with Cancer has a proud history of helping children with a cancer diagnosis exclusively in St. Louis for over 30 years. Jill Turec, Developmental Specialist at Mercy Clinic Children’s Cancer and Hematology Center, along with concerned parents, Molly Henry and Susie Snowden, saw the great need to enrich the daily lives and divert the attention of patients in treatment. These three women shared a dream that every child with cancer would experience as much fun, laughter, support, and normalcy as possible. It was this idea that was the birth of Friends of Kids with Cancer.
Friends provides educational programs like tutoring to help patients and siblings with learning difficulties due to chemotherapy or medical visits that remove them from the classroom.
For over 30 years Friends has been driven to meet the ever-evolving needs of not only the patients but their entire family. Every aspect of support Friends provides is proposed by medical professionals and patient families. Starting in the office of Dr. Bob Bergamini, local Pediatric Hematologist-Oncologist, in 1992, Friends adopted his philosophy: treat the needs of the entire child, not only the cancer.
Emotional programming provides mental health resources like support groups, counseling, and expressive therapies, to help patients, siblings, and parents express their feelings in this challenging time. Curating opportunities that allow kids and families to feel carefree is the core of Recreational programs, which provide special toys, activities, specialized gifts, parties, and experiences.
