Meet Eva, Friends of Kids’ new Development Coordinator. With a Master’s degree in Public Administration, and experience working in nonprofit development, Eva is excited to be a part of such a wonderful team and works to expand Friends of Kids’ fundraising efforts every day.

Angela has a deep-rooted passion for understanding people and their stories. With experience in the advertising industry and nonprofit program management, she loves working with big-hearted people and making a difference in the community. As Friends of Kids’ Marketing & Communications Specialist, Angela works hard to help our community connect with Friends’ mission through heartfelt and data-driven stories.

Joey Venturella, born and raised in Chesterfield, has a Masters of Accountancy from University of Missouri and many years experience working in public accounting as well as in Financial Reporting at Centene Corporation. Outside of work, he enjoys playing and watching hockey, but is always on the lookout for the nearest open tee time or patio with live music.

Originally introduced to the organization by the Lommel family, he was constantly impressed with the dedication and hard work put into every event to fulfill the Friends’ mission. After college, he joined Young Friends of Kids with Cancer where he served as a board member and treasurer.

Joey will be a wonderful asset to the Board of Directors and to Friends. Welcome!

DONATING STICKERS FOR OVER 20 YEARS For twenty seven years, schools, businesses, and churches have participated in Hats On Day, a fundraiser that supports Friends. By paying a suggested dollar amount, participants wear a hat and sticker, creating awareness about the effects of chemotherapy and hair loss in children with cancer, and supporting our programming by raising funds.

For over 20 years, Image Label has generously printed these stickers. With about 40 schools participating in 2021 alone, countless stickers have been donated to bring awareness to our cause. We can’t thank Image Label enough for their continued, reliable support.

ROOTING FOR EDWARD After seeing the white-board blurry at the front of the classroom, Edward White went to the optometrist thinking he might need glasses. At eight-years-old, Edward was told they found something behind his eye, which turned into an eight-year journey of growing up through chemo and learning how to rely on his supports to cope. Now 17-years-old, Edward spoke with us about his cancer journey and what helped him become the young man he is today.

“It’s difficult because it feels lonely. But talk to people around you—your hospital supports, Friends of Kids with Cancer… everyone is there to help you. They really care. Talking to people really helps,” Edward expressed.

You’ll find Edward at the Friends of Kids with Cancer office most Wednesdays, volunteering in whatever ways he can—stocking the toy closet, preparing patient gifts to go out, or organizing.

We estimate he’s donated hundreds of hours volunteering with us. We know he has arrived when we see him driving past our windows on his scooter.

Edward can’t drive a car because he’s legally blind in one eye due to the Optic Glioma diagnosis.

Friends of Kids with Cancer really makes each patient feel like family.

When asked why he volunteers, Edward said, “Friends of Kids with Cancer really makes each patient feel like family. On my first day as a volunteer, it was Christmas time and pretty hectic. My first day as a volunteer I went with Valerie to drop off a gift for a patient in the hospital.” While they were there, they met a mom that was receiving gifts for her family in the Adopt-A-Family program.

“The mom just had this look of relief on her face.

This is such a cool place and I know it impacted her so much. That’s something I want to be a part of,” he continued.

Cancer doesn’t define who he is and he continued to try out all of his interests.

Throughout 8 years of chemo treatments, which ended just nine months ago, Edward’s family was a Friends family. They still are.

There are many ways Friends helped Edward’s family throughout the years. Like every kid, there are some special memories that stand out for him.

“In 3rd grade I went to a Blues game with my dad and uncle.

We got to meet the players afterward. I wasn’t really a big fan of hockey before, but after meeting the players and going to the game, I really started to like it.”

He remembers going to the Brain Tumor Education and Therapy support group at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. “It was great

seeing and talking to the other kids and doing activities.”

Edward and his little brother also receive extra educational support through our tutoring services.

Currently Edward works as a Host and Food Runner at Sanctuaria Restaurant in The Grove. He’s known the owners “since kindergarten” and is friends with their son. “They’re really great people,” he says.

He still has Optic Glioma and thinks he may have to learn to live with it.

“There is a possibility it might not ever go away completely, but that’s never stopped him, ” said Valerie Kennedy Lang, Program Director of Friends. ”Cancer doesn’t define who he is and he continued to try out all of his interests.“ Edward is on the cusp of his adulthood. At age 17, he is graduated from high school early, and has some exciting adventures ahead of him. He has a keen interest in carpentry, inspired by home-improvement projects he did with his grandpa growing up.

He’s applying to get an apprenticeship for a 5-week carpentry program. He also has interests in social work and thinks he might go to college in a few years.

“Edward’s mom is supportive of he and his siblings’ exploration of what they want to do. She wants

PROGR AM HIG HLIG HTS HALLOWEEN DRIVE THRU On the cool and drizzly night of Wednesday, October 20, patient families peered out their car windows in awe as they approached Grant’s Farm Halloween Drive-Thru.

Cars were met by Storm Troopers, Wookiees, Jedi, and other Star Wars characters. Darth Vader was on his best behavior that night as volunteers handed bags of candy and Star Wars toys to each child. Over 300 toys were donated by The Peter Meyhew Foundation.

Did you know that Friends provides programming for Sickle Cell Anemia patients?

While continuing to provide excellent social work for our traditional patient needs, we have expanded our reach to include Sickle Cell patients, further exemplifying our innovative and inclusive work to helping children with cancer and blood-related diseases...be kids!

2021 WINTER COAT DRIVE The 2021 Winter Coat Drive distributed over 400 coats to kids this Fall through our Winter Coat Drive. We’re so thankful for our donors who donated coats, hats, gloves, and money so that kids with cancer and their siblings can feel cozy all winter long. Our hearts are warm thinking about the impact we make, with your help, in the daily lives of our kiddos.

WINTER WONDERL AND DRIVE THRU On the cold night of Tuesday, December 7th, all was jolly and bright as kids and families drove through our Winter Wonderland Drive Thru at Grant’s Farm.

Volunteers and staff greeted families with goodies and gifts, some dressed for the occasion.

VOLUNTEER SP OTLIGHT JERRY CLIPPARD

How long have you been volunteering with Friends, and how did you get involved?

I started volunteering with FOKWC about 2017. I was volunteering at the St. Baldrick’s Foundation Head Shaving event at Helen Fitzgerald’s and met Margie Sedlack, former program coordinator for FOKWC and we talked about the organization and all they did.

What does volunteering at Friends mean to you?

I really enjoy being a volunteer helping on event committees when I’m able to and also help with the different events. I just wish I was able to volunteer more.

Jerry has worked over the last 20+ years in long term care pharmacy. He’s been married to his wife Patricia for 18 years this October.

He enjoys bowling, camping, fishing and horseback riding. Most of all, he enjoys his volunteer work with several organizations, including Friends of Kids with Cancer.

What is your favorite Friends activity or event?

It’s a toss up between Art from the Heart and the Fashion Show. Both are amazing events.

What inspires you to volunteer and donate?

When I was growing up I had a childhood friend that was diagnosed with cancer and at the time there wasn’t much I could do.

“Since I started volunteering with Friends, I ’v e found a purpose and feel like I ’m making a difference by being able to donate and being a volunteer.”

Jerry found out that his employer offers the CVS Health Individual Fundraising Challenge Grant, which awarded us $500 in 2021. By submitting his volunteer hours, his employer matched his hours with a financial contribution.
