FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear friends,
When Friends of Kids with Cancer was created in 1992, our founders used the philosophy of treating the “whole child” through toys and activities to get kids’ minds off treatment. I can tell you 30 years later, the charity continues to grow and expand in its unwavering goal to support our patients and their families through ever-expanding emotional, educational, and recreational programming for the entire family.
As outgoing Board President, I want to say it’s been an honor and privilege to serve alongside our staff, board members, and volunteers as we navigated an extremely difficult pandemic, making both difficult choices and overcoming significant challenges. We learned a lot but no doubt, we are a stronger charity as a result.
It’s remarkable to think back two plus years ago wondering how we would be able to generate donations from a primarily event-driven organization and provide support to our families while having limited access to the hospitals, all while working virtually. With so many dedicated individuals and a lot of creativity, not only did we survive, but we also thrived with record-breaking fundraisers, additional support services expanding to the sickle cell community, and the additions of several full-time staff positions to support our expanding programing.
I delight in telling you we have made a full return to all our in-person events this year, and we continue to provide needed services to our patients and their families despite the safety guidelines our hospital partners are keeping in place. In addition, our very talented Young Friends board continues to make a significant contributions to our overall success.
Lastly, I wanted to welcome and congratulate our newest 2023 board members and incoming Board President Susanne Rosenberg. She is a longstanding Friends board

member and works as Executive Director of St. Louis Children’s Hospital/Washington University Dept. of Pediatrics in hematology, Oncology, and Infusion. With her Board tenure and her unique understanding of patient/hospital needs, we are thrilled to have Susanne and her executive team lead, engage, and inspire.
With heartfelt appreciation, thank you to everyone who continues to support this amazing charity.
In Gratitude

BOARD HIGHLIGHTS
CHERYL & BILL RETIRE
It’s in deep appreciation that we say farewell to Cheryl Lawless and Bill Brasser as board members.
Cheryl Lawless served on the board for 18 years and decided to step down after moving to Florida. She has been involved with planning the Fashion Show and Trivia Night and attended each fundraising and patient event throughout the years. Thank you, Cheryl, for your dedication to Friends throughout your many years of service.
“Friends will always be near and dear to my heart, no matter where I live. I have met some amazing kids and parents along the way. I have also made life-long friends who I met from being involved with friends. I can’t thank the Bergamini family enough for introducing me and getting me involved with Friends of Kids with Cancer! It’s been a privilege!”
Bill Brasser has been involved with Friends for many years before serving on the board for 5 years. He has been highly involved in the successes of our marketing and communication efforts, sharing the stories of children and families with our audiences. Thank you, Bill, for your expertise in sharing our stories and your continued commitment to support our mission through Captiva Marketing.
We are saddened to see them go, but are so grateful for their influences on this charity and their commitments to continue to support our mission.
NEW BOARD
MEMBERS & PRESIDENT
2023 will start off with new board members and our new Board President, Susanne Rosenberg.

FALL FUNDRAISING EVENTS
ART FROM THE HEART

60 pieces of artwork created by our patients and siblings were auctioned at the 13th annual Art from the Heart® fundraiser on September 22, 2022 at Mungenast Lexus of St. Louis. This event raised a record-breaking $72,000 to support Friends of Kids with Cancer’s art therapy programs.

THIS EVENT RAISED OVER
The auctioned artwork was created by patients in cancer treatment and their families during art therapy with Friends of Kids with Cancer’s art therapists, Natasha Westrich-Wood, Briana Miller, and Daphne Dierkes. These kids work all year on their pieces of art which help them to express the emotional feelings associated with their cancer treatment.
This year, we welcomed back our patient artists to celebrate them and treat them to tasty bites and fun activities. The artists were recognized in a short ceremony. Meanwhile, art auction bidding was underway to raise funds for Friends of Kids with Cancer’s art therapy programs.
The following week, patient artists who could not attend the event celebrated in their own way at the virtual Arty Party. Each artist received an artist-inspired box full of art activities and treats. They jammed to a private virtual DJ and were each recognized for their art pieces.

$ 72,000 TO SUPPORT ART THERAPY.
PUTTING ON THE RITZ AT THE FASHION SHOW

On a warm day in November, the annual Fashion Show & Boutique was held after a two-year hiatus. We gathered 28 patient models and their families at The Ritz-Carlton to treat them to a red-carpet lifestyle for the day. Each child walked the runway in two fashion shows, the luncheon and dinner show, feeling confident and proud in their styled clothes, hair, and makeup, thanks to our kind partners and donors.
THIS EVENT RAISED OVER $ 300,000

The kids were showered with personalized gifts, one-night stay in a luxury room, and even time on the microphone as our emcee, Susanne Rosenberg, gave way for joke-telling during the shows.

In the audience were generous supporters who clapped and cheered for our special models. We raised over $300,000 over both shows through ticket sales, whiskey pull, raffles, live and silent auctions, and other sales at the event.
“I knew ya’ll were great but after the Fashion Show, I see you’re on a whole other level. It was just amazing,” said one model parent.

Guests enjoyed boutique shopping from a variety of local vendors and most did not leave empty-handed. A fun photo booth was offered by Hart of the City photo booth.
New this year was the VIP Rooftop Solarium option, which featured entertainment, live jazz music, photo booth, and tasting of our special 30th anniversary Knob Creek bourbon.
Special guests and appearances included our friends from the St. Louis Cardinals, Paul Goldschmidt, Scott Cooper, and Andy Benes. Our VIP guests might have met Charles and Nikki Glenn upstairs before the evening show.
Honored at both shows with Legacy of Hope awards were Friends founders Jill Turec and Molly Henry for their 30 years of service to the charity.
“This event is far more than just celebrity appearances from our friends in the community. It’s a way to celebrate our patients and make them feel like they are the celebrities. To give them a special day to feel confident, valued, and to just have some fun,” explains Brandy Bimslager, Executive Director of Friends.

FALL FESTIVAL AT GRANT’S FARM
The Fall Festival was back in it’s original form at Grant’s Farm this October as over 400 guests dressed in costumes and visited with familiar faces like Spider-Man, Chewbacca, and other Star Wars and Disney favorites.

Families enjoyed dinner, goat feeding, carousel rides, face painting, balloon animals, photo booth, dancing by the DJ and, of course, candy.

There were no tricks in sight, but many faces were lit up under the spooky Halloween decorations as families were treated to a night of fun.

A special thank you to the Peter Mayhew Foundation for the donation of Star Wars toys, the Star War characters from The 501st Legion, Dream Time Princess Events, Hart of the City photo booth, DJ Shawn Titchenal, Fancy Faces STL, Sammy J Balloons, and Captiva Marketing.

OVER 300 COATS GIVEN TO PATIENTS & SIBLINGS

The 2022 Winter Coat Drive distributed over 300 coats to kids this Fall through our Winter Coat Drive. Our hearts are warm thinking about the impact we make, with your help, in the daily lives of our kiddos.
Special thanks to Hallmark Stone for all the coats you provided.
BACK-TO-SCHOOL AT THE MAGIC HOUSE
Over 200 kids and their families ignited their imaginations inside The Magic House at this year’s Back-To-School party.

Friends brought together our families in preparation for the school year, providing families with school supplies and gift cards for their varying educational needs.

Young Friends of Kids with Cancer, our young professional volunteers, checked people in, distributed free goodies, and provided a meal and cold water on this hot summer day.
A special thank you to Captiva Marketing for beautiful family photos and Rock Paper Sprinkles for packaging of school supplies.

NEW GRANTS RECEIVED THIS YEAR
FOUNDATIONS FOCUSED ON INSPIRING AND IMPROVING THE LIVES OF CHILDREN DELIVER GRANTS TO FRIENDS IN 2022
Friends of Kids with Cancer was awarded funding by Driven to Care, a subset of the Diane & Bruce Halle Foundation, to provide End of Chemo and End of Radiation parties and party boxes to patients during this milestone time.

The foundation, founded in 2002 by Discount Tire founders Diane and Bruce Halle, “identifies and funds outstanding nonprofits to ensure that all people can build healthy, productive, and inspiring lives.”

This grant is unique in that it supports Friends recreational programs, an area of programming that granters don’t typically allow for support.
Carney’s Kids Foundation awarded Friends of Kids with Cancer with a firsttime grant to fund music therapy supplies

and services. This grant provides financial support as well as publicity for this programming.
“We support organizations seeking to enhance the quality of children’s lives by improving their health, both physical and emotional; providing educational assistance; improving the environments of children living outside a family home; supporting families in need; and provide disadvantaged children with pathways to their own potential.”

This foundation was established in 2006 after radio personality John Carney wanted to focus his energy from charity appearances to fundraising efforts that had a meaningful impact for children in St. Louis, Missouri.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT LOUIE GILBERT

How long have you been volunteering with Friends, and how did you get involved?

For 8 years, since 2014. My wife started volunteering first, then I started helping out when she needed help. Been volunteering ever since!
What is your favorite Friends activity or event?
Art from the Heart. I own several art pieces.

Louie is a silent hero for Friends. With the company of his mom, he will drive any distance to make a patient smile. He delivers gifts to families, picks up toy drive donations, and runs errands for our fundraising events. Louie and his truck are invaluable to our office, and we appreciate his passion for serving the pediatric cancer community.

“I’ve always enjoyed helping people. When you can do that for kids, there’s no better feeling.”
