Friends of Kids with Cancer is devoted to enriching the daily lives of children undergoing treatment for, and survivors of, cancer and blood-related diseases.

Our mission is to be an advocate for these special kids

and provide them and their families with the educational, emotional and recreational support needed as a result of the long hours of chemotherapy, illness and isolation.

necessary to pivot almost everything

—it was busy, but also a privilege.

DEAR FRIENDS, During the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, it felt like everything changed, even our vocabulary. The words: unprecedented, quarantine, virtual, pandemic, masks, and so on, became part of our everyday language. The world adjusted to isolation, confusion, and fear… so much of what our patients and their families experience every day. However, our families then became disproportionately impacted in many ways, and our essential services and support were vital in helping families who were more isolated than ever.

As an organization, it became necessary to pivot almost everything from transitioning our staff to remote working, virtual fundraisers, and program adjustments—it was busy, but also a privilege.

Like so many organizations, we faced fundraising challenges. The hardest hit areas of income were our internal fundraising, third party event fundraising, and in-kind events tickets due to the limited ability of in-person events. It was also very important to our organization that we make sure our staff was not diminished throughout the pandemic. We are proud of the fact that we did not have to downsize our staff during this time, although many of our fundraising events had to be modified or changed considering COVID-19 restrictions. While Friends could have reduced employees temporarily to save management expenses, it is our belief that this

2

would have been detrimental to our organization and its mission, and that our staff is crucial to the long-term success of Friends.

Thanks to the incredible support of our missiondriven donors, Friends of Kids with Cancer met the needs of nearly 1,200 families in our community who have heard the devastating words, “your child has cancer.” We want our patient families to know that we retain the dedication of tremendous volunteers, donors, board of directors and staff who are determined to make a difference in their lives.

Never have I seen this heartfelt devotion shine more than in 2020! We can never say thank you enough to everyone who supports Friends, whether it be with your time, talent and/or donations. Your loyalty, kindness, and encouragement over 28 years has ensured Friends of Kids with Cancer will succeed in our mission today and in the future.

Friends of Kids with Cancer has a proud 28-year history exclusively in St. Louis of helping kids with cancer…be kids. Jill Turec, Developmental Specialist at Mercy Clinic Children’s Cancer and Hematology Center, along with concerned parents, Molly Henry and Susie Snowden, saw the great need to enrich the daily lives and divert the attention of the patients outside of the medical treatments. These three women shared a dream that every child with cancer would experience as much fun, laughter, support and normalcy as possible.

It was this idea that was the birth of Friends of Kids with Cancer. Starting in the office of Dr. Bob Bergamini in 1992, the inaugural program, The Big Shelf, now known as the Toy Closet, was launched to brighten the long gloomy and painful days spent in the treatment center.

Friends of Kids with Cancer has a unique niche for the families of children battling cancer: the glue. Cancer doesn’t just fight

From that day on, Friends has been driven to meet the ever-evolving needs of not only the patients but their entire families.

Everything Friends does is suggested by medical professionals and patient families.

Dr. Bob’s philosophy is to “treat the needs of the entire child…not only the cancer”.

Friends is such an important and unique charity because it gives back something that medicine can’t. The Educational, Emotional and Recreational programs build self-esteem and improve the quality of life to assure that the patients and their families remain positive, focused and prepared to meet their future needs.

the blood cells in a child’s body; it puts a strain on the entire family physically, mentally, and financially. Fighting cancer is tough for everyone, but for a child with so little life experiences, as well as the social and emotional handicaps that accompany their treatment, make it extremely trying.

Friends of Kids with Cancer is the glue that helps mend the devastating pieces cancer creates by providing an enriching daily life full of smiles, giggles, and a feeling of safety and confidence in the world.

Friends of Kids with Cancer doesn’t create miracles; those are left to modern medicine and the doctors and nurses who administer them. What we do, however, is create a positive frame of mind. Universally, being happy, positive and motivated makes every child more likely to succeed at whatever their goal happens to be. We believe the same applies here. Friends cultivates mental well-being with programs that help children and their families fighting cancer, cope with the daily challenges they face, make the best out of the situation they are in, and most importantly, remember that they will not be robbed of their childhood.
