This friendly international between New Zealand and Australia provided an early clue that the gap between the two nations was closing as the Kiwis eked out a 1-0 victory thanks to a Duncan Ormond winner scored in the 58th minute. New Zealand, under coach John Adshead, were building in confidence and they would overcome Australia in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers that saw the All Whites reach the finals for the first time in 1982.The 1979 match was also notable for being the last international played at Auckland's Newmarket Park before a landslide led to the abandonment of the ground as the home of football.
