A Step Back in Time By El l y A nyumba and Lauren Coss If you st opped by t he Lower School on December 17t h you might have t hought t hat you had gone back in t ime t o t he Greco-Roman age. You woul d have seen l ive perf ormances, a working aqueduct and an archaeol ogical dig. The Greco-Roman f est ival was a f if t h-grade research project where every st udent st udied a t opic and put t oget her a present at ion wit h a hands-on project . The research incl uded a t rip t o t he Penn Museum. St udent s, t eachers and parent s came t o enjoy t he present at ions. One of t he parent s was overheard saying, "Al l of t he f if t h-graders showed out st anding perf ormances wit h high qual it y and original it y. We were so amazed and it was t ot al l y beyond our expect at ions! I l oved al l t he project s." The f if t h grade present at ions were on horses, Cl eopat ra, women's l ives, archaeol ogy, sport s and Ol ympics, coins, and f ood and cooking. One of t he f if t h-grade st udent s, Dev, did a working aqueduct because he was doing archaeol ogy. Anot her present at ion was on f ood and cooking which al l owed peopl e t o l ay on t he st age and be f ed grapes and f oods as t hough you were l iving in t he days of Rome. This may be surprising, but even t he Greeks and Romans had t heir own sort of t echnol ogy! They had aqueduct s and carriages, as we have iPads and cars. The f if t h-graders wrapped up t he enjoyabl e day wit h a f east of Greek and Roman f oods t hat t he parent s provided. The f oods were t he same f oods eat en by t he Greeks and Romans in ancient t imes. The menu incl uded ol ives, pit a chips, hummus and bakl ava. It was a real Greco-Roman bash.
