Mrs . DeVan is a very special member of the Friends' Central School Community. Her contributions, especially to us, are often unnoticed because they are " behind the scenes. " Many days she has saved those of us who have overslept. In the midst of her busy work schedule she always manages to have time to answer our questions, listen to our problems and encourage us to strive for personal excellence. She is our friend and confidant. We hope that those who follow us will realize what a priceless asset she is to our school. We, the Class of 1987, dedicate this yearbook to her as an expression of our appreciation. We thank you for all that you have been to us and wish you every success in the future .

Dr. Harnett has been a positive influence and integral part of our Upper School years. She has taken us on tours of ancient history and has made the study of Latin exciting. In addition, she has given gentle guidance through the process of growing up. Thanks to her, life does not seem quite as " impossible" and we have been given the push which leads to seeking personal achievement. We dedicate the 1987 yearbook to you as a thank you for all of the times that you have pulled us through . Your example is one that we will cherish. We extend best wishes to you and your new family . VARSITY The Girls Varsity Lacrosse Team, coached by Lisa Clark and Dotty Dougherty , had a much more productive season than the final record might indicate. In Ms . Cla rk 's debut as the head Lacrosse coach at Friends' Central, she quickly established herself, and eventually proved to be both a learned and skilled coach. As in most team sports, the group needed time to pull together to form a solid unit. It took a while to adjust to the coaching methods of Ms. Clark, but the team soon realized that she was a very positive addition . The team climaxed in its semifinal game gaginst Westtown . Unfortunately playing at its apex in this game , they made a disappointing showing in the championship final game against the formidable Germantown Friends School. GFS won the Friends League for the fifth straight time, diminishing the hopes and ambitions of the team . The group only has next year to look forward to with anticipation. Elizabeth Toborowsky '87

IJVLACROSSE I When the Girls Junior Varsity Lacrosse T earn began their season, we were enthusiastic . We maintained this enthusiasm even though our season was not very successful. Our record was a losing one . Our team was led by Coach Kocot and captains Jen Cohen and Tori Curl. Varsity The Boys Varsity Baseball team finished the season with the winning record of four wins and two losses. Coached by Mr. Steve Shaffer and assisted by Mr. Tim Borton, F.C. defeated former Friends League Champions Germantown Friends, Moorestown Friends, George School and Abington Friends. The two losses occurred against Friends Select and Westtown. The team finished in third place on the Friends League and qualified for the playoffs. Unfortunately Westtown defeated the Phoenix 15-13 in an exciting, suspenseful game that ended the season. The team played hard the whole year. At the start of the season the team did not look ready to play a game, but it quickly improved into a well prepared team. Through practice players got to know each other better on and off the field. This definitely helped solidify the group as a whole. Co-captains Fabrice Trombert and Alec Schall served as stabilizing forces for the very young team. Most Improved Player, Philip Auerbach was the symbol of hard work. Center fielder, pitcher and occasional first baseman Fabrice Trombert received the Most Valuable Player honor. Despite a disappointing start, the junior varsity baseball team continued on to an extremely successful season. The team had a record of six wins and three losses, with an undefeated 5-0 record in the Friends League. Coaches Paul Perkinson and Gary Nicolai stressed the fundamentals and basic execution. The Varsity Boys tennis team captured its sixth straight league title. The team not only swept all the league individual championships, it also broke a record for most broken strings. Captain and first singles player Chris Bonovitz, was voted Athlete of the Week by the Philadelphia Inquirer, and was voted Most Valuable Player by his teammates. Dan Klein battled through pneumonia to play second on the ladder. Ken Slotnick, at the third singles spot, won several grueling three set matches. Paul Grossman teamed with Stephen Kay to be the first doubles champions. Matt Bernstein came back from being sick to play with newcomer freshman Kyle Richter. The team's year was highlighted by an upset of Lawrenceville School's J.V. team. The team will face their varsity squad in 1987, which is nationally ranked .

The junior varsity tennis season was an unusual one. Players learned that Coach Bower was on sab· batical and were surprised that Debbie Peltz would be coaching the team . She had previously coached the girls junior varsity, but coaching boys would be a challenge for her. Luckily, her instruction helped the team to improve and finish with an overall record of 5-6. Softball The softball season of 1985-1986 was definitely an entertaining one. People came out for the team to learn, to have fun, and to fulfill a sports requirement. Jennifer Zweben (Dwebe) had never played before, but developed into one of the team's best players; earning her the most improved player award. Deanna Kel· ly, the team's most valuable player, lead the team in both defense and offense. Samantha Marks sacrificed mind and body to play the team's catcher, while Melanie Fischer hurled the balls from the mound (maybe bump). The girls' varsity tennis team continued its winning tradition for the fourth year in a row winning the Friends School league title. However, this year's win had a special twist because it was accompanied by an undefeated record of 12-0. The realization of these accomplishments was made possible through the leadership of the four year coach Ray De Sabato. He always advocated smart tough tennis as well as just having fun and as a result the winning took care of itself. JUNIOR VARSITY
The Varsity Field Hockey team had a great season this year . We were a team that worked hard. Although the season started out very slowly, we learned from our mistakes . We were a team with many strong individuals who when called upon did their respective jobs well . We ended the season in third place. We then went on to beat G.F.S. for the first time in five years, to take us to the championship game against Westtown. We wanted to win and this showed in our play, allowing us to beat Westtown and become Friends League Champions. Danielle Waldrop '87
The 1986 Junior Varsity Field Hockey season was one of steady improvement. The team worked hard for unity and victory . Although the score did not always reflect the efforts of the coach and team, we maintained a positive attitude and looked ahead to the next game . ISOCCER I The 1986 Varsity Soccer T earn ended its season with a 9-4-4 record, its best in several years. The success of the team lay within its number of young but aggressive rookies and experienced senior leaders who all managed to stay healthy for the fall season. This team went undefeated in league play with impressive wins over Friends Select and George School. Its only loss was in the rematch against George School in the Championship game. The 1986 varsity soccer squad continued its winning tradition under coaches Keith Bradburd and Harvey Zendt and hopes for more success in the future . Kenneth Slotnick '87 This year's Friends' Central Junior Varsity Soccer was a hard working team with great determination. The team continually improved throughout the season trying to be the best they could be. After painful and persistent work along with supportive words from coaches Beach and Baur, the JV team was able to win . Defined by the team and coaches, winning was becoming the type of players their creator intended them to be. Thus, the Junior Varsity was successful and are truly winners. Geoff Klein '90

No, it's not the freshman team or the ninth grade team. It's the third team. Sophomores do deserve some respect. Third team soccer or the J-JV under the eyes of the coaches, Mr. Darling and Mr. Snipes, had a year of ups and downs. After a close loss to Episcopal, we thought we could put together a winning team . Well, we tied one and lost the rest, but we had one of the most impressive seasons of a third team in years. The coaches also had great insight into the team's development, "Hey, I thought we gave you a uniform not tickets ." The scores have not been recorded . Our record is forgotten . The only thing that is left to consider is the fun we had doing what we like to do, play soccer, win or lose. Eric Kramer '89

What makes a championship basketball team? Is it waking up at 5 o'clock to practice at 6:30 AM? Is it the combination of individuality and teamwork it takes to win? Is it playing as hard as you can to win 6 out of 8 games knowing the whole time that no matter what you do you aren't going to the playoffs? Is it 11 players, an assistant coach who is compassionate and teaches controlled aggression, and a head coach with discipline , heart, knowledge, and dynamic energy work· ing together as one for a common goal? It is all these things in· corporated into one team. With the excellent senior leadership of captain Dan Klein, Alex McDonnel, Beryl Brown, and David Jones the team scored impressive victories. The eleven members and two coaches grew closer together and created a stronger bond with one another. One would think that a team that went through Saturday practices, games and practices over vacation, and an occasional 6:30 AM practice would win a trophy or a plaque. On the contrary they didn't. Nonetheless they are champions because they earned the right to be called the boys varsity basketball team. Wayne Rader

Freshmen Basketball
Coach Steven Shaffer led the junior varsity basketball team to another impressive season at 14-6 overall, 8-2 in the Friends League, and a perfect 8-0 at home. The team had to overcome the loss of two starters, David Mersky and Kyle Richter, early in the season due to injury. Michael Jackson and Scott Erlbaum took up the slack. They guided the jv to their fourth consecutive championship of the Friends League Tournament at G.F.S. Coach Shaffer was proud of his team's effort in overcoming adversity and having a successful season. Eric Ash '89 This year's 9th grade basketball team had limited success, but still enjoyed playing the game to the best of our ability. Everybody contributed to the team either in games or practice. We were lucky to have been inspired by two excellent coaches, Mr. Borton and Mr. Baur, who did a great job in attempting to teach us better basketball skills. This year girls basketball team was plagued by many illnesses, but the 12 of us that began playing in late November banded together to make a strong team. We were a team composed of 6 seniors who had the leadership qualities necessary to give the team guidance. Coaches Diane Dibon and Timothy Beach helped teach us skills to be used both on and off the court. We finished second in the league, thus being favored in our semi-final game against Moorestown Friends. Though many of our peers doubted our ability we were victorious . We went on to meet George School in the Championships, attempting to revenge our loss earlier in the season. We played with our hearts and souls, because for many it was our final game for Friends' Central. We lost on the score board, but we won in our hearts. Danielle Waldrop

Rome was not built in a day . . . and a championship caliber wrestling team will take some time to develop . The 1986-87 campaign was a rough road for many grappling egos, but the horizon looks bright after a successful season of laying many foundations for the future. It was inexperience that hurt the team most, but that will be corrected next year when this season's " green horns" return matured . Freshmen Sandor Glasor, Geoffrey Klein, and Adam Vernick stepped right into varsity positions. The experience they gained this year will help the team down the road . (Adam also came in second place in the Friends League) . Two new wrestlers will return for next year's season, but suffered some losses this year because of inexperience. Junior Frank Macrina and sophomore Tri Tang (2nd in the League) will greatly benefit from what they learned this year. Next year's captains, juniors Peter Tashjian and Abel del Rio, hope to minimize the graduation losses (Jon Adler and co-captains Peter Klein and Jim Rutenberg) by having experienced underclassmen replace these seniors. With summer training at wrestling camps, an always optimistic Coach Doug Ross, and a good crop of freshmen and sophomores, next year's team should be much improved and a strong contender for the league title . After her indulgence, Into the bed she sunk; Poor Mary-Anne was passed out, Wasted, ripped and tied and drunk! Upon her sister's parting, Josephine heard, "CRASH, BOOM, THUD!"; There at the foot of the stairs lay Mary-Anne, In a pool of bright red blood! Old Josephine lives far away now, And enjoys the art of dating. She's grown to like the way it feels, To be a lady-waiting. She owns a hotel and a tavern, And enjoys a fruitful life. Always dressed tor success, Marcus "Mr. Nice Guy" Alston is perpetually trying to figure out how to ask. This chess champion of sorts may be found watching Dr. Ruth, but he can 't quite understand it. We don 't think 'Cus will be needing any party favors ; he's a party all by himself.
Don't ask her what she is doing on the weekends because Gwen "Gwenny Lou " Angert does not want to be swarmed with tag-a-longs. Always injured and on a fresh set of crutches, our class picks Gwen most likely to be on an upcoming Wheaties box. Stick with the gymnastics, babe!
So what it he is going to marry a nun . Kennedy Robert Behrman (or whatever you call him) will always be "a crazy guy." Look tor Nero as a future FCS headmaster or the next Oral Roberts. This psycho might fly someday without any outside assistance (probably as the Red Baron around a padded room) .
Matt "the Bat" Bernstein can always tall asleep - whatever the hour, whereever the place. Despite all of his charitable aid to the Philadelphia street people, Matt may need the help himself living on the streets or suffer a relapse into his past preppy stage. Stay tuned tor current news .

Krissy Chimes may finally be starting college when most of us finish graduate school, but this gal never needed a formal education . Not that she needed a place to go, just a reason to stop having fun . With the empty " Magic Box," " Krissay " needs neither money or fame -just a fun loving lunch date.
Never a playboy centerfold , this future doctor will only see flesh in a examining room . Lauren (fill in the title " Dr." soon) Cobbs has a planned future that looks promising and bright. Her biggest problem will be what specific field of medicine to enter and how to spend the money won from her Nobel Prize.
Jessica Coplon will always be stuck between a rock and a soft place: the rock of justice and liberty and the soft of chocolate. Somehow, we are sure she will combine social service and sweetness addiction . Does anyone know of a peace march in Hershey for "Jess?"
She will always deny it, but Stephanie " Steffie" Denenberg is positively pseudo - something ("what" we are not sure). Probably retaking yearbook pictures or recording phone messages, this fast lane mover and shaker will never be without camera or fully satisfied or content.

" Blade" may never be a pro soccer goalie since his theatrical expertise will be used in a night club or a circus. And don't expect any sons " Moby, Richard, or Harry" (Chris' sense of humor has its limits).
" .. . But I love you ," says Laura Dohmen . And everyone believes her. Laurie is sure to get to the " Top" very quickly but might not be destined to stay there very long . Let 's hope the top isn 't working in Dunkin' Donuts with the other " Dohmen ."
Susan Dreher may come across to a perfect stranger as over cultured or enriched, but all of her friends know better. She may enjoy going to movies stag, but " Susie" will make sure she is dressed for any unexpected company she may meet.

Running through life not out of fear but solely for the pleasure, George Goff will always be first off the blocks and number one at the finish . However, waking him up while sleeping on the job may be a problem for our speed demon . Somehow " Ralph " will survive .

You may think she knows every piece of trivia, but Claudia Melaragni doesn't consider these important facts trivial. "Claud" will always have a new boyfriend horror story and if ever wed, he is guaranteed to be the older, mature type. The lifesaver of the class, where their is water, Claudia cannot be far.
Bill Mumma is likely to terrorize someone, but that is because he is so misunderstood. Outside, is the everyday good guy Bill, but inside is Dr. Who waiting to emerge. Definitely a shoe in for the TV role as the Dr. on PBS, Bill might past the time inventing board games until his big break arrives.
Someday he'll get that dream Porsche, but until then Andrew Newcomb will treat any car he has like a million bucks. Not sure of his true nationality (American or Swiss), Newk enjoys wining and dining every good looking girl - most or wnom ne nas his choice of for evening activities.

John Stein , our B.M.O.C., can always be found at the home hockey games. Singing a Beatles tune, J.R. will have trouble being taken seriously, except on days when he has extra tickets. This effective leader will live in a house with a flat driveway (for street hockey, of course).
Start clapping now, because Jennifer Sterrett will win a Nobel Prize . Not likely to be a punk rocker (but will always be a rebel), Jen will always be at the root of some innocent prank. A family woman at heart, she is sure to be surrounded by a loving husband and lots of kids.
She is so quiet that many people don 't know what she says, but Paula Strumia has a lot inside. Sometimes all of that does not help her get the FRAP homework done on time, but she can usually get out of it somehow. Before we were wed , a girl we said , was sure to be tall from toe to head. We chose a name we knew she could bear, and at birth without a care, all nine and one-half pounds WE CALLED SAM! " You've come a long way baby." Precocious she was in a physical way, walking before a word she could say. But when she talked , she knew we'd hear, cause she had a way of making it clear. OUR GIRL SAM! " You've come a long way baby." At Montessori she succeeded, at table washing or what was needed. Her brother Greg, she thought a pain, but sibling rivalry was to blame. BIG SISTER SAM! "You've come a long way baby." Merion School, then on to B.C. , proving just how good she could be. Josh 's arrival caused a stir, including the birthday he shares with her. OUR GEMINI , SAM! " You've come a long way baby."
As a Bat Mitzvah, her talents shone, she chanted with poise and set the tone For a speech which asserted the rights of all, and as a woman she stood tall. MAZEL TOV, SAM! " You've come a long way baby." She chose Friends' Central as the place to be, then made her mark rather quickly . In class, on court , inside and out, in our eyes she really stood out. FIGHT ON SAM!
