BOOK of 1951
FRIENDS' CENTRAL SCHOOL
68th and City Line
Overbrook, Pennsylvania

THE THEME OF OUR YEARBOOK IS SYMBOLIZED BY THE KINGS
A!\D PAWNS OF THE GAME OF CHESS. ACCORDING TO TRADITION, CHESS WAS INVENTED "TO DIVERT MEN FROM THE ATTRACTIONS OF ACTUAL WARFARE." ALTHOUGH THIS SYMBOL OF THE GAME OF CHESS MAY SEEM TRIVIAL, IT ACTUALLY POSSESSES GREAT SIG ' !FICA ' CE TO ALL STUDENTS WHO HAVE ATTENDED A FRIENDS' SCHOOL WHERE THE DOCTRINE OF PEACE IS INSTILLED.
PERHAPS, AS WE ENTER LIFE'S PORTALS, THESE SYMBOLS WILL BRING TO OUR MINDS THE FIRM FOUNDATION WE RECEIVED AT FRIENDS' CENTRAL. WE HOPE THAT WE SHALL CO 1TRIBUTE OUR SHARE TOWARDS MAKING THIS WORLD A BETTER PLACE IN WHICH TO LIVE.
SOME OF US MAY BECOME KINGS Al\:D OTHERS MERELY THE PAWNS, BUT IN THE YEARS TO COME, AS WE GLANCE THROUGH THIS BOOK, WE HOPE THAT WE MAY BE UNITED IN RECALLING THE SPLENDID DAYS WE HAD AT FRIENDS' CENTRAL.

J " an pafienf.
-Thomas Henry Huxley

WITH UTMOST ESTEEM AND APPRECIATION, WE, THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 1951, DEDICATE THIS YEARBOOK TO ALBERT J. SNITE, A MAN WHO HAS CONTRIBUTED MUCH OF HIS TIME AND FREQUENTLY DEMONSTRATED HIS PATIENCE, A D SINCERE CONCERN FOR OUR CLASS. THE CLASS OF '51 WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER MR. SNITE FOR HIS GENIAL FRIENDSHIP, RICH SENSE OF HUMOR, HUMAN UNDERSTANDING, AND HIS READY SMILE FOR EVERYONE.

Again we hold forth in room 3 1, a new thing for the Friends' Central eighth grade, but old stuff for the class of '55 .
With the help of Nicky Freeman, business manager; Ted Riccardi, accompanist; Sue Souder and Dave Atkinson, conductors; and Kathy Lare, soloist, we captured second place in the song contest.
In math class we studied stocks and bonds, compound interest, banking, and rent, all of which was very interesting. Mr. Snite took us to see the Philadelphia Stock Exchange in connection with the course. In social studies we worked on Burma, Siam, Indo-China, Malay

Peninsula, and the East Indies. Those of us who gave oral reports gave them over a microphone as a radio program with Bonnie Boardman as the announcer. At the beginning of the year, under the direction of Mr. Burgess, we made tape recordings.
Both the girls and the boys won a major portion of their games. In the fifth football game our record was three won and two lost. Our midgets won three of their hockey games, lost one, tied one. The soccer team, though not as successful, played a hard season. Our bowlers were Elliot Snow, Kathy Lare, Ted Riccardi, and Fred Merz.

Ba ck Row: Margolin, Miller, Levy, Richman, Best, Collins, Jefferis, Parsell, De Palma. Center Row: Mr. Harvey, Groff, Appel, Fares, Kaufmann, Preston, Fetter, Harvey, Therman, Moulton, Dcrr. Seated: Perl off, Elkin, Bok, Dunlop, Gartner, Miller, Freeman, VanZanten, Markland. Absent: Vickers.
The seventh grade enJOYS the Upper School life very much. In social studies we have been studying the marine and polar climatic zones, while in math we have had the usual drill in fundamentals, with basic construction for interest. English has been a combination of good reading and of predicates, adjectives, and spelling bees with Miss Trap nell.
Our class meetings have been very successful under the leadership of president, Bob Gartner. Barbara Dunlop, vice-president, stood by "just in case" and Marjorie Miller, secretary, took many notes. Our treasurers, Allan Freeman and Enid Bok, somehow got everyone to pay his yearly dues before Thanksgiving-a seventh grade record . The Athletic Assocition representatives were Judy Moulton and Katherine Appel for the girls, and Barton De Palma and Don Best
for the boys. The Student Council representatives were Enid Bok and Barton De Palma On the Service Committee were Sue Kaufmann, Sieta Van Zanten, Anne Markland, Terry Fares, an Fetter, Barbara Dunlop, Enid Bok, Alan Freeman, Bob Gartner, and Barton De Palma.
We have had a successful season this year 111 sports. The eighty pounders, winning four out of four games, became lnter-Ac champions; but the 10 5 pound team was not as lucky for it won only three out of five . The midget hockey team won three, tied two, and lost one .
We also placed fourth in the Song Contest. in which we were led by Sieta Van Zanten, our chairman.
We hope our remaining years will be as happy as seventh grade has been .

The Record Book of the Class of 19 5 1 is the end result of hours of exacting work on the part of many members of the class.
The business and financial angle was ably handled by Dave Ellis, business manager; Rodger Lindsay, who doubled as assistant editor and advertising editor; and, of course, Mr. Snite, our financially-minded gift from heaven.
] oe Hughes, photography editor, and Phillip Osborne, his assistant, have done a hard job well, as the product of their work in this book will testify. This department has worked closely with ] ane Lines, art editor, who has done a wonderful job throughout, especially in her handling of t:1e theme.
The excellent sports section may be attributed to the efforts of Shirley Smith and Dick Heilman, girls' and boys' sports editors,
Coordinator of the efforts of all these people has been ] oanna Haab, editor-in-chief of this year's Record Book. She has been a good organizer and patient throughout. Jo deserves the thanks of everyone connected with the production of the book.
Thanks also go to Mrs. Woerner, copy adviser; to Lane Allison; ] oy Appel; Debbie Hazzard; Molly Jones; Beau Paulmier; Nancy Reynolds; Francie Williams; and to the many members of the class who have contributed so much to the Record Book.

The Blue and Gray is published and edited annually by a staff of representatives from each class in the Upper School. It encourages and welcomes contributions from students of the entire Upper School.
Among its many ways of encouragmg the students to contribute to the magazine, the Blue and Gray sponsors a contest The contest lasted this year from November 22 to December 23. Two prizes were awarded to the authors of the best pieces of prose and poetry. Francie Williams '51, and Sally Deming '55, won the prizes for their excellent pieces of poetry and prose respec-
tively. Both wmners and the runners-up of the contest received honorable mention in the Blue and Gray.
The contributions to the Blue and Gray consist mainly of stories, essays, and poems which are original creative productions of the students. The officers are Marian Siter, editor; Marie Haber, secretary; Sally Strong, business manager; Joy Appel, art editor; and Helen Starling, exchange editor. The Blue and Gray is ably directed by Miss Trapnell and Mr. Burrowes, the magazines' two faculty advisers.
Mexico is a far distant and strange land t o most of us, but to Nancy Robertson, our good-will ambassador to Mexico, it is the most wonderful place on this earth . As the Mexicans were all so friendly, our Student Abroad found it very easy to live in a a foreign country and learn to understand a people whose background is so different from our own.
Between the snow on Mount Popo anJ the tropical bay of Acapulco unwound for Nancy a continual thr ead of bull fights, the symphonic orchestra, and the archeological thrills at Bonaca, interspersed with classes at the American High School in Mexico City.
By July she was ready to come home but she hated to leave her good Mexican friends, th ose gigantic "comidos" with "tortillas y frijoles," th e good times, the new way of living she had discovered, and the country she will always remember "con mucho carino "
