OUTSTANDING PERSONALITIES

Clayton L. Farraday is Friends' Central's youngest faculty scientist (he spells it with two r 's though). Everyone who took biology with Mr. Farraday in 9th grade remembers his expert treatment of the chloroformed frogs , the star~fish , and the happy treks over the campus in spring looking for maple , tulip poplar, beech, and even gingko leaves . . .. Years passed and we found our able counsellor in the role of senior boys' homeroom teacher. Dean Farraday (with the help of the gov~ ernment) gave wise advice to college hopefuls, and proved to know all the regulations and all the possibilities for the best future he could plan for us.

OF THE YEAR

Alvah Small has a wonderfully keen sense of humor. It is quite apparent if you hav e ever been in one of his classes. It is the perfect seasoning to make his prize subjects, chemistry and physics, more enticing to the h esitant student. But this is not Mr. Small's only selling point. He is, and there is no student that will disagree, without doubt one of the most patient members of the faculty. Fairness, equal opportunity for each and unbiased opinions have marked Mr. Small's many years at Friends' Central. And it is the earnest wish of each member of the class of 1944, that, when w e come back in later years, we shall .find Mr. Small unchanged as ev er writing " SB, See me's" and laughing. Yes, laughing at jibes at or by him, exactly as we all remember. We hope that ALL will stay the same.

The members of the Class of 1944 would like to express a word of thanks to our headmaster, Dr. Barclay L. Jones.

Throughout all of our career at Friends' Central we have been impressed by his efficiency and thoroughness, and we also think of him as a counsellor and as a friend. At times, when we became discouraged, we were invigorated by the thought that we could always turn to him for advice and assistance. Though hampered by difficulties caused by the war, he has retained his fairness and friendliness; for this we shall always remember him.

New London, Connecticut, April 1, 1944-William Wellar Phillips S/ lc has not quite escaped from the magnetic at~ traction of Friends' Central; so. since he is still in the eastern United States, he runs in to see us occasionally and gives a personal account of his activities. He has boldly volunteered for submarine du~y and at some time in the near future will probably find ample opportunity to view in their native habitat those fierce deni~ zens of the deep we studied so thoroughly in our ninth grade biology. Meanwhile we are content to see his smiling countenance occasionally and those of his newly found friends in navy blue about the campus during those short visits he never forgets to share with us.

Loesler, indicates that he is enjoying life there, riding wild boars, and eating his fill of cocoanuts. In off hours he shoots as many Japs as possible, and writes cheer~ ful letters to almost everyone in the class.

Unfortunately eagle~ eyed censors refuse to pass the details of his exciting adven ~ tures, so until he is back with us once again and can relate them himself, we shall have to be content to know that he misses all of us here at Friends' Central.

Word has also been received that Cliff Jacobs, who left last June, is now in the Naval Air Corps; and Oliver Cope has received his Honorable Discharge from the regular Army.

CLASS HISTORY " No, no, Mr. Farraday, not the whip, please not the whip," broke the monotonous sound of dragging chains as the pitiful little group came into view, led by Winfield Carson and Dave Nicholson. Thirteen years of mental tor~ ture and physical labor, 1931 ~44, showed heavily on their faces and yet their spirit remained; even the hideous realms of the kindergarten room had failed to break it.

They were followed closely by a group of twelve~year sentencers. Jerome Trumper, science's answer to perpetual motion, came carrying capitalist Carl Levinson's ankle chains. Sue Williams, serving time for playing professional and amateur athletics at the same time, trailed Marjorie Gillam and John Cqrson, the latter a victim of anti~student council plots by the faculty.

There were no lasting additions in 1933, but Ruth Cor! was admitted the next year-just in time for the diabolic full day schedule.

Dorothy Gotwald and Barbara Darlington were next; both had been seen cheating in a beauty contest, and with them, as a fellow nine~year term server, was Howard Fussell, who had clubbed a tennis opponent to death with his racquet in a moment of frustration. The burning sands of Egypt and "Pharoahette" Miss Thoms had been almost too much for this trio.

In 1936 Martha Shmidheiser was added to the chain gang of '44 when she was caught forging Petty girls for the BLUE AND GRAY, and Smedley Walters found triple charges of bigamy too much and joined in our study of the electric chair.

The following year found Art Lukens receiving the third degree for his sympathies from Mr. " Learn that poem! Draw that Map!" Biscoe. One year behind him came Hap Earle (a disciple of the two Stein boys " Franken and Ein") who had been showing his scientific talents at an early age by making bigger and better dollar bills. Bill Phillips was found sell~ ing Dr. Phillips' "Old Home Remedy" on Market Street, and Bill Moorehe was just lonesome. All three were whipped (we really mean it) into line by Mr. Harvey who employed his own subtle method of mental torture-joke telling, West Media style.

In 1939, wearing zoot ankle chains, came Dot Leidy and Carolyn Zirn~ kilton, leading the way for horse meat hoarder, Diana Richmond. Then Dorothy Jones and Katherine Rich had to come along for the last four years when they tried unsuccessfully to burn down Green Street Friends' School.

Accompanying them were Pem Minster, for trying to lead Lansdowne's secession from the Union; Norman Bailey, quickly taken in hand for giving New Jersey mosquitoes one~way train fare to Pennsylvania; Arthur Bishop, caught raiding Arch Street Pawn Shops; Betty Hall, arrested for "anti~

make~ up " soap box speeches; Paul French, sued by twenty~seven chess mas~

ters and Macy's Department Store for ruining the game's appeal, and Beryl Sweigard.

In 1942 Bob Russ received the annual three~year award for distinction in tilting pinball machines, and Sue " How you all" Munsell was found a social nuisance for still fighting the Civ il War. With only two years remaining, Virginia Griffin , Ellen Ann Roberts and Millie Fisher-all chasing ROMEOS Bob Peiffer, Bill Snyder and Tom Eavenson, came by mistake to the sinister Friends' Central gates. All six were trapped.

Nineteen hundred and forty~three first greeted Charleses Clark, Krug and Parker and Tom Hogan. All four had been picked up claiming to be athletes.

Finally came Clifford Kirk and Bob Bartle, transferred Missouri outcast, and then Lourdes Melgar, to discover and take back to Mexico F. C. S. systems of punishment. Then all together we moved forward to freedom at last.

NORMAN WALTER BAILEY " Yo11're kidding of course/"

Norm

By popular vote not only the hardest worker and most sincere; but also, thanks to certain political engineering, the cutest.

Our beaming, bow-tie-bearing Norm may be seen in such a variety of a tmospheres as the BLUE AND GRAY room in his position of temperamental editor; pushing a broom in the "wreck" room; or perhaps playing piano for the Friends' Centrial trio . And, in addition to this , five majors and getting this RECORD BOOK out on time have fallen to his lot. As for his class work: well, he writes morose tales and carries on a subtle feud with Mr. Cadigan , but his efforts have netted him so far no less an honor than Cum Laude. He takes a lot of good-natured razzing, but the plague of his life is the fact that the stork drop)?ed him in Millville, New Jersey, in a 'Bailey Basket. " That, he can never live down!

Leaving his natural habitat-the trees and wilds of Missouri-the "sage of Kansas City" has been at F. C. S. for only one year. Most of that time has been spent in the following ways: irritating Mrs. Scholz, relating sundry experiences to assorted male classmates, nursing dulcious (?) "oomphs" from his favorite French horn, and fiendishly scribbling meaningless and illegible symbols on paper while muttering "sine one-third theta" or "Horner's Process" -not to mention his discourses on "synthetic division" and his proof that one equals two which have left Mr. Fogg and even Earle reeling in their seats with amazement. He is also rightfully famous for his unique style of playing football-known as the "bench method."

JOHN ARTHUR BISHOP " T o11gh apples!"

Here he is, the class spark plug and lunch time lover! Listen during any recess period , and the second loudest laugh will always identify " Bish." The loudest would be from his buddy, Bob Russ, who shares all his troubles and triumphs.

Though Artie received 90 per cent of the questions and gave 9 per cent of the answers in physics class, he still managed to keep up in his studies. He is known also for his NEWS editorials and for always being out to practice in all sports to contribute a lot to the team spirit.

When lunch comes around you will see Art first in line in the cafeteria. "Bish" is a little uncertain as to his future, but it is rumored that after careful training at Friends' Central he may land a janitor's post in one of Levinson's factories.

JOHN SALOM CARSON " Perish forbid!"

Cool. calm, dignified-until Krug comes along-then try to stop him from laughing. " Beans, " the notorious Stalinhater; " Beans," the eloquent orator; " Beans," the cruel, hard-hearted custodian of the Rec-room . "Honest John" Carson can list 99 good reasons why medicine is at the crossroads; he can give the names and middle initial of the first 30,000 people sent to Siberia ; still more remarkable , he can speak intelligently (?) on th e advantages of Upper Darby. Sometimes known as the man from Rangoon or as a member of the Legion of the One-Eyed , he commands the respect of all.

WINFIELD REED CARSON " 11:7 ell, good/"

Silent Win can usually be found in any of three places. His most common hangout is the lab where he will be engaged in concocting some substance amid an array of test tubes and beakers. His next most frequent haunt is the soccer fleld where he spends a portion of every day in the soccer season. Not only a good player, he proved to be an able captain as well.

In the spring we discover him out on the track running the quarter-mile in an amazingly short time. Not limited to these three areas alone, he stands out in everything he attempts. Although Win is known for his silence, when he does speak he has something to say.

CHARLES HOFFNER CLARK ''H e's dopey/"

"Chuck," arriving this year fresh from Springfield High , didn't really become known to Friends' Centralites until the basketball season. After 30 points in the Germantown game he is now " Mr. Clark." It's a well known fact that Min ster and Clark together scored 31 points!

Since Bill Snyder's departure he has been promoted to the position of captain.

Spring flnds the tennis team expecting great things of "Chuck," and, after all, why not, he 's a state champion. Too bad we don 't have a bowling team . He's tops at that, tool After seeing how he leads the fellows around the football fleld after calisthenics even the track team is at his heels, but judging from his athletic prowess not even they will be able to catch him .

RUTH GEORGIA CORL "Hi ya!"

R11thie Spectacular hockey, smart clothes, a nd that trip to Valley Forge every Fridaythat's Ruthie! Anyone who knows her needs no explanation whatsoever of these first three statements. They're quite obvi ~ ous! But in spite of the widespread rumor that " Ruthie likes Bill, " some one of us always manages to ask her where she is going when she arrives every Friday all dressed up in her Sunday best. Ruth 's tal~ ent for art is a less publicized but equally important part of her character; however, it doesn't look like Ruthie will be one of our career women as she is a charter member of that exclusive little group of engaged girls.

BARBARA ISADORA DARLINGTON Babs "Hiya, Stinkey!"

Although she was voted the class baby, Barbara is not the smallest in the class, and she would like everyone to please note this. She is famed among the seniors for her healthy appetite, and only once or twice has she ever been known to pass up an offer of "a bite." Though the kids may tease her about living "in the sticks," it's noticeable that they all turn out for her parties-remember that hay~ride in tenth grade? Some fun! In the laboratory Pasteur has nothing on our Babs, the hardest worked chemist, whose invariable lunch time greeting is, "Well, girls, I just flunked another chemistry quiz!" We will always remember Babs for her steadily increasing collections of buttons and cats and her very comforting habit of always being on hand to act as an integral part of any class team.

ALBERT PORTER EARLE " Oh, brother!"

Happ y Our "Albie" has oft been compared with Albert Einstein-and also with various screwball inventors. At almost any time he can be heard mumbling into Dotty's ear, or into any ear that is willing to listen to him , such phrases as, " Now the 5th root of the hypotenuse," or other equally unintelligible words. When not doing this, it is a pretty safe bet he can be found in the lab completely encompassed- except for his feet-in a sickly green smoke that is vigorously erupting from a blackened test tube. Not limited to these activities alone, the " bane of Bailey's life" is also a member of the track and soccer teams and a participant in many other extra-curricular undertakings. Earle, the eminent crackpot, is at present endeavoring to invent a machine which will enable two men to do the work of one, and we bet he can do it, tool

MILDRED ANN FISHER " W bo was your servant last year!"

Millie Known for her continuous line of chatter and her contagious laugh at lunchtime, Millie well deserves to be considered the most popular of the class. She possesses an amazing attraction for members of the opposite sex. Could it be her tolerance of their so amusing antics? She seems to radiate sympathy and goodwill that draws all and sundry to her with their problems. Discovered doing the opposite from what she is supposed to in art history class, Millie is soon forgiven when she turns on th a t impish smile and exclaims: "Oh, sir-!" Much to her goodnatured disgust she is sometimes called "Mehitable Jane ," but with her peppy personality, no matter what she is called, her name spells vitality plus!

PAUL COMLEY FRENCH, JR. Pa11l

" l' ott know what ..."

What-you say that fellow with the blue and yellow and polka~dot striped tie? Why, you must mean French! He's not at his best today though; that's not loud at all. Yes, sir, some of his ties make Mr. Howeth's collection look like Min~ ster's gym socks. A chess fiend, Paul is frequently to be found hunched over a board busily engaged in planning strategy to humiliate his next victim. In Lukens he finds a trustinH friend; for certainly any~ one willing to lend his automobile in these days displays the ultimate in confidence.

Paul's another one of those "way~off~in~ Germantown" boys and almost any recess period finds him drawing complicated dia~ gramatical maps to his home.

HOWARD BARKER FUSSELL ''On tbe larl'n 'til dawn"

Here's "Foslo" our ex~president and tennis terror, the poor man's Bob Hope.

His subtle humor and biting witicisms are truly classic. Howard spends most of his social life being in love with one girl or another and most of his school life draw~ ing super~machine guns and other dubi~ ous implements. In sports he is one of Friends' Central's best tennis players, playing number one on the squad for three consecutive years. His most noted features include his mellow boogie, flashy ping~pong. and his barn. The Fussell barn has just as much a place in the annals of F. C. S. history as the very grounds on which the school is built. It has been the scene of almost every big social event given in the past three years and is fairly steeped in Friends' Central tradition.

What the future holds for Howdy is hard to say. He could be a tennis star, an au~ thor, or possibly an engineer; but we aren't sure because what with chicken pox and such he doesn't come to school often enough for us to tell which is his most outstanding ability.

MARJORIE FELL GILLAM " Knit two, purl two" M arge Marge is our class knitting expert and when not engaged in this worthwhile pur~ suit herself she can invariably be found helping her many knitting proteges. She is also an authority on the history of art and can rattle off at a moment's notice any information you may want on this subject from the art of the cave~man to that of the twentieth century. No wonder she is one of Mr. Pittman's favorites : If there's a job to be done, such as sitting up front in meeting, Marge will be among the first to volunteer. Small wonder, one of the few people in the class to brave twelve years at Friends' Central. by now she knows all the tricks of the trade.

DOROTHY FRANCES GOTW ALD D otty " Oh, pooh .'"

In Dorothy we find our ideal of femi ~ nine intelligence. To the continual amaze~ ment of her less fortunate classmates she is able to read a novel throughout a chemistry or French class and still com e through with outstanding marks. Such brilliance is practically unforgivable in one who plays hockey and basketball with equal ease. She fits beautifully into that little group of intellects, Earle, Shmid~ heiser, and Bailey, who, at that Mecca of genius, forbidden to all unbelievers , their lunch table, hold forth with deep dis~ courses. Of what they speak it is hard to say, but I think that it is safe to assume that it is usually a to ss~up between a philosophical discussion and next week~ end's entertainment.

VIRGINIA BURNETTE GRIFFIN " D efinitely" Ginny As yet we have found nothing to upset the serene look of contentment on the face of that most poised young lady of our class (unless, perhaps, it is Harry) . Th e girl around town , her activities include shows, movies, dances, parties, and even prize fights. Possessing one of the better intelligence quotients of our class she is systematically reading every book in the library. She is very popular among her classmates, and they often seek her ad vice. However, there are times, when , in a sudden wild spree, she can be found madly pursuing Millie about the room with an ink-well or anything else that is handy.

ELIZABETH INGRAM HALL " Oh, my cow!"

Betty is that girl who is usually late for assembly, but she is readily forgiven this otherwise unpardonable sin when her 1.1 any attributes are considered. Let us 2onsider them therefore: firstly her scholastic ability which , it goes without saying is tops, a product of brains with a dash of conscientiousness; secondly her athletic prowess is not to be sneezed at; moreover we cannot overlook a hidden but definite skill at the piano; and what is more she is cute. Don't you think she is what you'd call versatile? We do!

THOMAS LAWRENCE HOGAN Murpby

No gathering is complete without an Irishman, and our class is certainly not complete without our eminent " Hogie. " His flaming red hair, flashing through the backfield at ' the speed of light is a sight we will all remember. And to be sure, our " Hogie" also cuts a mean figure on the dance floor. Being Mrs. Benner's pro~ tege, he puts up a good struggle in review math too . The following years will prob ~ ably find our red~haired terror in uniform, and either carryin a gun or a billie~stick ; we're not sure which.

DOROTHY ESTHER JONES "Goodness" f onesie Where Jonesie is there also you will discover Kathy enduring Dot's endless teasing , for she is a past master at this art. An amazing fact about the life of this girl from the barbarous wilds of German~ town is that despite the lengthy and cir~ cuitous route of the E bus she arrives at school every morning long before the break of day. The end of her day-a day of teasing Kathy, feeding all her cake to Norman and "Happy" at lunch time, and displaying, in some way or another, her talent for art-finds Dorothy Jones (and the inevitable Kathy) outlined against the setting sun waiting to embark upon the long voyage home.

HORACE CLIFFORD KIRK Cliff " Ho hum!" " Silent" Cliff entered in his senior year and soon made himself an important member of the class. A Gradyville farmer , he will always be remembered by the football team as the fellow with the pick~ up . When not sleeping in enterprise classes, he is constantly to be seen with Holly; but he sometimes finds time to bull around with the boys. Since he has been with us only one year, we have not had time to thoroughly observe him, but he has made a raft of real friends. Although he is quiet, his presence seems to add something to any kind of gathering.

CHARLES KARL KRUG "' Yort'll be pickin' 11p teeth."'

No one who has known "Shorty" will ever forget him, not only because of his size, but mainly because he is forever Riled with good cheer and laughter. Proof of this statement lies in the fact that en~ tire English and history classes have been known to go into convulsions as a result of his witty ditties and limericks; and the patience of both Mr. Cadigan and Mrs. Scholz has been sorely tried. Charlie has also been outstanding at all forms of ath~ letics. His attainments in track and soccer are noteworthy, and certainly his stellar performance in the memorable Penn Charter game will never be forgotten .

DOROTHY EDITH LEIDY "That's smooth!"

Almost missed in the crowd, she's so tiny, Dottie is the class glamour girl and has been with us since eighth grade ex~ cept for junior year at Lower Merion; but we were glad to have her back to pep us up and keep us posted on the latest rec~ ords. (Her purple passion-Frank Sin~ atra.) She is often seen nibbling (you've heard of little girls with big appetites, and here's the original} or cheering the F. C. S. teams. Dottie also provides the back~ bone that keeps Friends' Central's junior varsity hockey team on the map.

CARL ANSEL LEVINSON " IVe/1, f or a 'T ' stam p ... "

Lev, the personality kid, was voted the most versatile boy in our class. Small w onder, with that starring role as Henry in " What a Life!" (Mr. Cadigan had be~ gun to think that Lev was living the part altog ether too much, and was getting a bad habit}. Being the smoothest dancer on the floor , coupled with that slick line, makes no girl impervious to his unique charm. But social attributes are not all Lev possesses. There 's that unerring skill in the physics class and equally unerring tennis back~hand; and I think none of us will ever forget Lev's feverish face behind that menacing flashbulb getting his quota of snaps in for the RECORD BOOK. Only a start can be made within the compass of this write~up in describing Lev's versatility. Suffice it to be said that he keeps the class coming back for more.

No matter what one is doing, Lev is al~ ways a most valuable addition.

ARTHUR THATCHER LUKENS, JR. " F11nny as a cmtch" L11ke Art Lukens is a fellow who takes great delight in driving his car over various ob~ jects in the school driveway, especially faculty members! His horn just loves to get stuck during chemistry period so he can skip class and fix it. Of course every~ body knows he has a time bomb arrange~ ment set for 11 :45! Quite a ladies' man, he will be remembered for the occasion when, going steady, he went to a winter carnival in New York and returned wear~ ing an extra ring. His answer to our in ~ quiry was, "Jeesie Peesie! I must have picked it up somewhere." His sense of humor is punctuated by a proverbial. " Funny as a crutch."

MARIA DE LOURDES MELGAR Dessie "Are you keeding ?"

Lourdes captured all of our hearts when she first arrived despite difficulties in un~ derstanding at first on both sides; how~ ever, she soon caught on to our way of talking and amused us with the " modu~ lating" she did in art and her coquettish " take it easy boy!" Her sparkling eyes, coal black hair, and unforgettable smile will always remain a part of our mem~ aries, and though she will soon be leaving us to return to her home we hope she will think of us often and remember us as her friends .

Jovial. boisterous Pem , also known as " Bull Moose," is outstanding not only for his si ze but also for his brains and personality. As a three-letter man , he can hold up his end in class as well. His a bility at dramatics has been another of his noteworthy features for the past three years , and as guardian-angel of the treasury, he always seems to be after someone for back dues. Another member of the " Legion of the One-Eyed ", " Curley", destined to be at least a v ice-admiral , will be Friends' Central's gift to the Navy , as he plans to enter Annapolis. ·

WILLIAM HOLLENBACK MOORE " H ey, fellows, have ya beard ?"

"Willy" is not the first Moore to hit Friends' Central. but he certainly is the smallest. Bill's size is the first thing you remember; then comes his eternal joketelling (not that we're complaining, they're good jokes) . And Bill's model train set-up puts him on an equal plane with even Earle's swell layout. Model airplanes and photography show how diversified his interests are. He has one more hobby: a large collection of fine telescopes for looking at shortrange objects. We didn't expect to see Billy very much on week-ends because of his known partiality to that swell place at the shore.

SUSANNE GREELEY MUNSELL lt' s a howl" Smie

Bright and early almost any sunny morning Susie's bike skids to a standstill on the brick court, and our " Juliet" sails into the building with a cheery, "Hello."

A demon for work, she is the heartless manager of the girls' basketball team ; and just look at the results she gets out of them . When not managing, however, she resumes her natural attitude of be~ nign friendliness. Our southern belle, a!~ though still fighting the Civil War, seems to find plenty of time for plays, dance committees, class offices, social shindigs, and other activities - among which not the least important is Bob. Still more astounding is that despite this already packed schedule she makes spectacularly good grades. Perhaps the most applicable word for Susie would be "versatile", but somehow we will always remember her as our friend .

DAVID ARTHUR NICHOLSON " Zoot'' Nick Dave, who does not aspire to be a her~ mit, is known for his famous method of navigation. If you see him surrounded by a blackboard covered with all sorts of un ~ usual diagrams, you know he is busily en~ gaged in his favorite pastime of finding his way home from the South Atl?ntic.

Also noted for his wild tales of Llanerch , his speed~demon system of soccer, Dave is quiet, good~humored, and an all~around swell sport.

Charlie is our boy from West Chester.

Famous for his jokes and his West Chester yarns , he adds the finishing touches to any bull session. With his unending puns and laughter (a cross between the roar of a lion and the trumpeting of an elephant) he keeps Mrs. Scholz in a constant whirl. His real fame , however, springs from his terrific bow!lng scores. " Ace" --a name not far wrong--has been in numerous bowling tournaments and has carried away high honors .

ROBERT LOUIS PEIFFER " M e fine. H ow yott?"

" Me fine . how you?" This is the invariable answer to any and all questions.

Bob deserted us half-way through the year for that handsome P . M . C. uniform .

Since he was with us only a little more than a year, you may wonder why he has made such an impression. Well, may we briefly explain that if you have never seen Peif in his pegs and zootie ties, you , my fri end , have never lived! The position of president of the Boys' Athletic Association -- which little did he know entailed public speaking--will always recall him to mind. In fact Bob seems to have had a finger in many a pie, even if it wasn't legal. Being Mr. Small's stooge a nd Susie's Romeo should have occupied most of his time, but he generally had something else up his sleeve too.

KATHERINE MARY RICH Kat by "May I ask a question?" " May I ask you a question?" is her usual approach, and the forthcoming query is destined to concern French, chemistry, or the latest gossip. Her good nature and easily flustered disposition subject her to continuous teasing, pri marily from her inseparable chum, Dot Jones. Poor Kathy, she works so hard for the student council. She's the one who's in charge of selling refreshments at games, you know, and by the time football season is over she is practically a nervous wreck between keeping her accounts straight and drafting boys to carry those cases for her. When you first meet Kathy you will probably say, 'My, she's a quiet girl!" but you don't know her as well as we do.

DIANA MAY RICHMOND " Ob, Lordy!"

Annie Annie is another one of those wonderful people who are the first to greet all new comers and take them under their wing. Her enthusiasm and exuberant persona lity draw all to her, but they have also made her notorious as our noisiest girl. Being a farmer's daughter from far off Malvern , she has a passion for horses a nd dogs ; but that love of jewelry and shoes does not come from living in the country. But then we have always said that if we were farmers , we would get a place just like the Richmonds' .

Ellen Ann is the reason gentlemen pre~ fer blondes. Late every morning she ar~ rives from far off Downingtown and dives into the depths of a Spanish book. How ~ ever, her real calling appears to be science as she does a more than adequate job in helping Sue to uphold the rights of womanhood in physics class. Born thirty years sooner she might easily have been one of the foremost proponents of worn~ an 's suffrage. As it is however, we predict that she will have a brilliant future as the Madame Curie of our class.

Bob Russ was unanimously voted th e noisiest boy in the senior class, but that' s only when he's not with Beryl. When not running from the gym to the upper school or with Beryl, he can be found at the Top. As an invaluable drop~kicker for the foot~ ball team in the fall and as captain of the baseball team in the spring he makes an important contribution to the athletics of F . C. S. Nevertheless, he finds the energy to make more noise than any other three persons in the school. However, we wouldn 't have Bob a bit different for any ~ thing .

WILLIAM MONROE SNYDER " Hi.'" Sn11!Jy Ask almost any girl who's the cutest senior boy, and you'll get the invariable answer, "Bill Snyder." However, they can all sigh over him in vain because although he has a cheerful smile for one and all he can always be found with Susie Millick or that dilapidated old Ford convertible. And if it's an athlete you're after -well. didn't "Snuff" captain the team that upset Penn Charter? Mr. Cadigan always called him George, and Uncle Sam just plain called him , but ask anybody about Bill. and they'll all say, " He's one swell guy."

" Marty" reminds one, on first view, of a piece of Dresden china, fragile and delicate. On further acquaintance, however, you perceive many more delightful characteristics; that flair for art, her quelling wit, demure beauty, and whoever heard such a fluent exact French accent? And that sudden breeze past Miss Stuart's desk thirty-five seconds before assembly is , without a doubt, Martha dragging her inseparable companion, D . G . (or vice versa) in a now-or-never dash to beat the bell. And at 9:08, when Mr. Howeth has already · donned his "well-let's-get-started expression", you will find this pair, each with a disorderly armful of books-never the right ones-rushing up the stairs, with a " Gee whiz, we're late!" Despite her effortless procrastination and her quick two-minute priming before a social studies test , Martha can be depended upon , in the end, to do an exacting and thorough task and do it well.

BERYL LINDSAY SWEIGARD Beryl

Beryl is quite a social member of our class, being present at all social events; and we shall certainly never forget tha t wonderful formal she gave at the Ba rclay in February. Her jolly disposition a nd outstanding smile make her tops a mong the girls who all envy her her amaz in g collection of scarabs and her dura tion ta n .

In Beryl we find still another exa mple of versatility. She's quite a dancer , (you should see her and Bob jitterbug) , a note~ worthy pianist, and her career in ]across and hockey are not to be disreg a rded .

She is another ardent Sinatra fa n and is also crazy about the Army, but a s yet she hasn 't made much progress with Frankie.

JEROME JACOB TRUMPER "But- but- but" Jerry Our Jerry will always be remembered a s the manager of the NEWS par excel~ lence. Nor shall we soon forget our pic~ ture of him also managing the various teams from basketball to track ; reading lists in a ssemblies all signed J. J. Trumper; and arguing. Jerry is without doubt the most proficient arguer that ev er graced the halls of Friends' Central. You could hear him contesting his points of view down in the basement putting the paper to bed, or in the physics class telling Mr. Small he didn 't " get" the third question but had the right answer to a purely imaginary question of his own . Between Perilstein glass and his unimaginary tal~ ents as a journalist it's hard to tell where Jerry 's star will come to rest, but you can rest ass ured that it will be high.

HERBERT SMEDLEY WALTERS " H oly gee.'"

Smedley is extremely interested in American airplanes and French girls.

Concerning the former , he has several small models which he occasionally brings to school. The senior boys ' home ~ room smelled like something akin to a re ~ finery for several days . And when the physics class was studying gas motors , it was Smed who brought in several gas jobs for scrutiny. That the prop nearly took his finger off is not mentioned, but the chipped propellor attests to the fact .

He well deserves the title of " Best Dressed Boy" which was bestowed upon him after the class poll was taken , and we have rumors that the one reason he hasn't gone into the Naval Air Corps yet is that the uniform isn't quite sharp enough.

SUE GRAU WILLIAMS " H mmmn.'"

If anyone ever wonders why Sue emits those embarrassed "hmms" every time she is called on in class. this is just a trib~ ute to her modest manner and her way of letting the teacher know she is con~ templating the question. On the athletic field she is anything but modest-you should see her collection of first team letters, gold basketballs, lacrosse sticks. and hockey sticks! No wonder she was voted best athlete of the senior girls!

Math seems to be her special dish . and she has also weathered the stormy seas of chemistry and physics. Much to the amazement of her less scientific friends our " just plain Sue" is considering a career in " bugology." Susan is also an avid sail boat fan, and we certainly hope the good ship "W edunk" will never let her down.

Although Carolyn is not what you would call an out~door gal , she has plenty of other interests (Dartmouth is one of her main ones) . She joined us in eigh.th grade and has been one of our favorites ever since. We are continuously amused by Carolyn's amazement at what~ ever we happen to tell her and her pet expression : " Oh, no-?" She can often be seen carrying packages after doing the family marketing , but more often she is seen with Jay_ Carolyn was the first sophisticate to enter our class, and there's no denying that after four years she cer~ tainly deserves her niches in the class poll as prettiest, most sophisticated, and best dressed senior girl.

FRENCH CLASS Apparently the effects of the Terrorists of the French Revo~ lution are still felt by both Sue and Kathy who when called upon in class are overwhelmed by terror and forget everything they know.

Happy and Sue should really be in the French Navy. Their chief topic of discussion , or should we say argument, is boats.

Occasionally they are joined in this by Dotty Gotwald. Oh, well, someday perhaps, they will be able to argue their theories in French, and then the discussion will prove less painful to the rest of the class and far more gratifying to the teacher.

I wonder if Barbara , Martha and Win are as quiet in every class as in French. Apparently they 're afraid that an error on their part will bring down upon their heads the righteous wrath of all good Frenchmen. Betty is quiet, too , but more through nature than fear. She really doesn 't seem to make mistakes.

Dottie Jones is for once separated from Kathy and lends her moral support to Sue who apparently feels less terrified with Dot at her side. Or could it be that she needs Dot's grammar book? The class, by the wa y. is the ultimate in collaboration. So many of them forget their books.

Happy, it seems, commands Norman's r espect, as for example: " Sir, I mean Happy."

Then look out for a sly remark from Win .

But for everything : verbs , grammar lessons, a nd the Shmidheiser~ Gotwald com ~ bine, it has been an enjoyable and profitable y ear for both class and teacher alike.

THE PHYSICS CLASS Physics is always a popular subject in war time , so our daily recitations frequently start off with a "Bang!" When a quiz is announced the class goes up in smoke and several crawl into a mental fox-hole.

Often a noisy beginning results in a very quiet ending as the period drags on into the recess period. One may guess which end of this period is the most popular.

We have learned that there are not enough push buttons in the laboratory that cause experiments to be performed automatically with answers to all complex problems sliding out of a slot.

Machines don't work; one must work on them.

Our two girls. Ellen Ann Roberts and Sue Williams. admirably uphold the honor of their sex against eighteen boys who include sharp shooters such as Earle. Levinson, the Carsons, Fussell, etc. " One- eye d" Minster occasionally finds it difficult to get the correct slant ·on a complex problem. " Lone Rang-er" Russ and his faithless companion, " Taunto" Bishop, gallop into class in the nick of somebody',s time . They say that this pair never · failsbut that is on the radio.

Earle has brought honor to the class by his amazing success in being one of the finalists in the W cstinghouse Science Talent Se.a rch.

Seriously. though I could not eva luate the potentialities of this group I have ·every faith that the energies of its members may become kinetic.

SENIOR SPANISH BUENOS DIAS, ALUMNOS-no sound-the words slide softly down the sloping ceiling of 37 and drop on the heads of the sleeping Good Neighbors. BUENOS DIAS, ALUMNOS!I hear a gentle fluttering of eye-lids and know that it is wise to take advantage of any sign of life in a classroom. So I quickly sta rt to say, BUENOS DI-but I never finish . This time there is always a vigorous chorus of BUENOS DIAS , SENORITA PROFESSORA! We are all awake and nearly all present.

(Carolyn and papacito will arrive soon, we know. ) Everyone is bursting to say today's irregular verb. Everyone except Ruth who has brought a choice bit of past to tell Mary Louise instead of a future for the class. Clifford saves the day with a gerund in his best Castillian pronunciation. Then we lure the attention of one senor Peiffer from la senorita Munsell by making him el Jefe (the boss} of the biggest garage in Mexico City and all think of difficult jobs for him to do . Ginnie and Ellen Ann have modest wants-only flat tires to be fixed . (They could find complicated problems but Art History weighs too heavily on their minds.} Millie and Marge, always on the alert, have questions about an accident which keep Bob idiom-hunting until he is saved by the clock. To this class which has made the beginning of every day a time of vital interest to and genuine enjoyment for its instructor-BUENA SUERTE, ALUMNOS! DOROTHY V . HASTINGS.

ART HISTORY The senior class is assembled for a Wednesday morning discussion of the Italian Decadence and significant painters of the Spanish School. Martha has been given a special research assign~ ment on the " Jesuit School" but seems vague and obscure in trying to get it across. Arthur relieves the perplexing moment by telling us that it was a period of pretentious and over~elaborate art and merely a type of religious propaganda. Breaking a dead silence among the girls, Ruth says Diana has a good report on the Jesuit School but unfortunately is not here to give it ~ so there!

Dorothy Jones is asked to give a background of the introduction of 16th and 17th Century Spanish Painting but her words are so long in formulating that happy is the moment when Millie raises her hand to announce that she has prepared to report on this phase of today's work. Dorothy sighs with relief.

Tom enters the picture now by saying he feels sure that Fig. 444 is not a painting but a piece of sculpture. Ginny and Carolyn hasten to agree.

Beryl seems v ery eager to start talking about El Greco, precipitating a lively dis~ cussion. Lourdes says she feels he is " just right" and a perfect artist.

Dottie Leidy starts a controversy over liking his " wonderful faces" and beautifully posed arrangements , while Marge and the other members of the class fully agree.

Arthur and Tom seem anxious to get on to Goya and the morning ends with a vivid display and discussion of the " Duchess of Alba" in all her glory.

LATIN CLASS Place: The tutoring room .

Time: Eleven~thirty~five on any fair winter day (if it rains, snows or hails, we seek another haven.)

Temperature: Hovering around zero, with visibility poor owing to the fog issuing from our congealed lungs as we enter from the plunge across the campus.

We start proceedings with setting~up exercises so vigorous that Dottie's joints crack alarmingly. Now that the blood is circu~ lating sufficiently to bring Latin to the brain, it is Dottie who interprets the first paragraph that stretches, in balanced periods from page to page, sonorous, bitingly caustic, civilized.

"Oh, I see!" says Betty, her black eyes shining ; and, as I look into them, the shade of a smaller Betty takes her place, carrying· me back to another classroom , Room 26.

Remember?

There is Nancy with her, "Oh can't we have some fun today? " There are Jerome with his amazing translations; Martha finding the place with Dottie's expert help; Sue's " O~oh! I knew it!" Barbara's pretty, worried face ; Win so calm and keen; John 's judicial presence (John, are you sure that's not sight?) ; Carl and Howard brought suddenly back from their own affairs but disarmingly intelligent; Happy's engaging smile, and his wit~ ticisms; Normans courteous but determined , " I beg your pardon, Happy, but I thought ... " There they all are suspended out of time in memory. No, Latin is not dead while those who study it are alive.

TRIGONOMETRY CLASS As we enter w e find the trig class in warm pursuit of the solution to a problem concerning the width of the Delaware River . " We should have used the cota ngent of angle X ," announces Earle, confidently , " because these two lines are perpendicular .

Besides ... " " But isn't this the ambiguous case?" Levinson puzzles.

Minister protests, " I don't see how you figured the distance YZ." Both Carsons hasten simultaneously to explain ; with success.

Krug whispers to Jerry in spirited fashion , but nobody else hears. " If this problem asked for the width of the Delaware at Trenton, I could tell you the a nswer," Walters beams. "My grandfather swam it right there."

Sue, vigorously operating her slide rule, proclaims, "The river is exactly 2163.5 feet wide."

"It can 't be,' objects Bailey, " my rule reads 2161.67 feet ."

"This is a quadratic equation," expounds Fussell wisely, "so there must be two solutions."

This arouses Nicholson . " Aw, how can the Delaware have two widths at the same point?" " It depends on the height of the tide." French is serious. " F ellows, we have all misinterpreted the inverse notation." Bartle is speaking. "Pi refers here to radian measure." " Pi~then it must be lunch hour. Wha t's the answer book say?" queries Snyder. " A h yes, the answer book. Let's see." Earle thumbs the pages. " Here it is. 2163.5 feet. Sue is correct. Congratulations."

As Sue exits, grasping her slide rule, someone is whispering to her, " Will you trade ru les with me? Mine never does have the right answers."

SOCIAL STUDIES My last class! Seven years at Friends' Central and seven classes~each in its day distinct and separate with a group char-

acter of its own. But you will all too soon lose your group identity, each individual having been a mixture of brains and beauty, docility, enthusiasm and boredom, resentment and affection, disorder and discipline, prettiness, and general human kindliness salted with a dash of deviltry. With some the old ties remain , a few grow stranger with the years, a few are stretched and broken and even the names and places are forgotten.

But perhaps~and this is the teacher's persistent wish~ perhaps within a few or many of you, some germinating idea may have been established~some deeper understanding or tolerance, or urge to fight injustice.

And there, in the belief in these intangible, immeasurable results , lies every teacher 's pride of achievement and hope of immortality, so nebulous, and yet, we hope, so powerful.

So, twenty years from now, you, in your suburban homes, with your $8000 yearly income, your three children and two cars and one dog apiece, may be quoting unconsciously some overworked phrase of mine long after my name and face have faded beyond recall. I do hope you will anyway.

Love and prestige, we said, were the two basic human needs. And I am human , all too human. I want your love, I want the prestige of having influenced you . And if I am frustrated in these hopes, frustration , as you know, produces aggression, and I'll take out any aggression after forty more years when I am dead , by coming back to haunt you in your smug suburban homes.

REVIEW MATHEMATICS What could be the cause of the sudden rush for room 26, and isn't it time for everyone to go out for sports? A quick glance reveals it is only the C girls hurrying to their lockers in the back of the room, and the B girls also going to their lockers, just outside the door . Weaving in and out among them come the seniors to the tune of " Boogie Woogie," (blasting from the recreation room below) .

Suddenly all is quiet, for the band of C girls have vanished. an d the impetuous musician below has been halted, and thus the Review Mathematics class is ready to begin work.

Pem , in fact, has already begun , because he wants to leave early so that he does not hold up the T-formation again today . " I couldn't do those investment problems," says Tom , looking worried. Barbara and Dorothy shake their heads. " Oh, I got the answers, but not by Algebra ," exults Miley. " For me, the amount of interest was more than the principal, " complains Bill. " You just forgot that decimal point again ," roars Charles, starting to the board to exhibit his work. " What's the homework?" asks Bob Russ , looking bored, and glancing at Clifford to see if he is still awake. " Want me to do some problems? I got them all," volunteers Bob Peiffer. " I would like to leave a few minutes early, if I may .. . You see, there is an athletic meeting now , and I am chairman."

This gives Beryl an idea , which she shares with Ellen and Virginia , who approve heartily. " Couldn't we all leave early today? We can put the remaining problems on the board." " Don't be silly," adds Martha , after a quick look at the clock.

SALUTATORY To our parents, teachers and friends assembled here this afternoon we, the class of 1944, extend a most hearty welcome.

As we pause here on the threshold of a new era, our thoughts turn back over our many happy years at Friends' Central. We realize how much we owe to our headmaster, to our faculty and to our school. It has been they who have guided us, educated us, and molded our characters throughout these past years. They will watch us leave tomorrow confident that they have prepared us to carry on, and as a result of this preparation we can and will carry on against all that life can offer.

For this guidance, education and confidence we are deeply grateful.

Nor must we forget our parents; for it has been their aid and their sacrifices that have enabled us to finally arrive at this point. They have loved us , cared for us , and given us a life full of happiness and opportunity.

With such a foundation, surely we can go forth strong in the faith that we will honorably fulfill our obligations both to ourselves and to society.

But come! Let us forget all else for a while and enjoy this our Class Day. We ask all of you gathered here to join us in our fun and gaiety, and should we lack some of the dignity belonging to "Seniors," we ask that you bear with us in this our last informal gathering as students of Friends' Central.

VALEIJICTORY Well, this is the end! But is it really the end? "No," you say, it's really the beginning, just what we've been waiting for so long, the real beginning, the long anticipated plunge into life, the escape from teachers and books and homework.

But, deep down inside you know that what we're leaving behind is more than just twelve years of classes and books. It is twelve years of the only existence we have been aware of throughout most of our conscious lives; and suddenly, now that we have absorbed a required amount of English and algebra and history, we are ready to try our wings and put a stop to this tedious process of education.

But are we really ready, and can we really stand on our own two feet?

"Well, you say, "we know a little something about labor unions; and we can find the value of x provided the equation isn't too involved; and we're quite sure everything in the world is made of atoms, or leastwise almost everything."

Yes, but maybe life's problems will prove a little more difficult than finding x, and maybe there are some things not made of atoms like love and peace and happiness, and there won't be any teachers to ask and no answer books. And then you smile, a smile full of confidence and courage, and say, "Well, we've learned a lot of other things too! Things like sacrifice and tolerance and above all teamwork, and we've learned to think about others, to take the bad with the good, to fall down and get up laughing, and always to put the most into life in order to get the most out of it. Those are subjects not on the curriculum."

We don't like to talk about these things, but we know that actually they are as much a part of our education as the purely classroom courses in science or language. When the time comes for us to make use of our knowledge, it will be a combination of those lessons we have learned from our books and those experiences which have broadened our minds and developed our characters which will help to make us wise and useful citizens of America and of the world.

And you musn't think we don't appreciate all that our parents and teachers have done for us to enable us to realize our utmost potentialities. It is through their guidance and sometimes more than gentle prodding that we are here today possessing the best education and preparation for life that they have been able to provide for us.

It hasn't all been easy going; but we have had some wonderful times and made some wonderful friends. And maybe underneath we know that when we have children of our own, we will look back at our days at Friends' Central through rosier glasses and tell them the school days were the best.

But that is looking a long way into the future; and first we have a war to win, a peace to make, and our own niche to carve. We are fully aware that grave responsibilities lie ahead of us. and we are going to do our best always no matter what obstades rise in our path.

Our parents and our teachers have started us on the road, and from now on it is up to us.

We're not going to Jet them down.

Let us prove to them that their efforts and their sacrifices have not been in vain.

CUM LAUDE Every year these students who have excelled in their scholastic work and have outstanding characters are elected to Cum Laude. The equivalent of the collegiate Phi Beta Kappa, Cum Laude is an honor for one to be justly proud of. It represents the ability and application of the student to scholastic and social affairs. A most cherished possession, the Cum Laude key is a symbol of hours of industry and preparation to achieve an excellence in subject material, but more than that it is a proof of a superior character. Since the standards regulating tl:le election of student to this honorary society are necessarily very high, only a comparatively small percentage of the class is chosen, but these few represent well the ideals for which Friends' Central strives.

STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council year running from February 1943 until February 1944 was another of the many successful years in the Council's history. After the instigation of the home room cleaning program by the students, the Council set up a banner system in which the cleanest home room for each week was awarded a Friends' Central banner which they could keep until some other home room won the award.

The Council continued to run the fire drills , the used book store and the selling of refreshments at games. The proceeds from the last two activities were placed in the Student Council treasury .

The most significant accomplishment of the Council was the establishment of the Walter C. Crouch Memorial Room. Room 5, Mr. Crouch's home room , was turned into a recreation room for the students' use at recess lunchtime, and after school. Contributions of money were made by the students, parents and Alumni towards the purchase of furniture. The Student Council members worked during the summer painting and fixing this room , and in September 1943 the room was opened for the students' use under the direction of the Student Council. A plan was set up for the Council members to clean the room and rules were made for conduct and respect of property in the room.

Plans for improvements and the betterment of this room have kept the Council busy the biggest part of the year.

BLUE AND GRAY Now you all know what the " Blue and Gray" is like, but did y ou ever stop and consider how it gets that way? Suppose we v isit, for instance, one meeting in the person of an invisible spectator. We gather up our invisible notebook and our invisible pencil. and precisely at three P. M . w e hasten to the basement so as not to miss anything. But what is this-no one here? We settle ourselves in a quiet corner and wait! .. . Several students rush in, glance hastily around, and exit abruptly. Before we even have time to recover from the shock of their precipitous entrance, in strides Norman Bailey looking pre~ pared to catch a train. He glances feverishly at his watch and begins spreading papers on the table. "Are we late," cry the three assistant editors. " Do you think it's necessary to ask that?" is the ready response of our editor. Crushed, they settle themselves as the rest of the staff wanders in. The meeting has begun. Forty per cent of this meeting consists of reading and voting on master~ pieces that the students have contributed. The other sixty per cent is spent in irrelevant arguments between the assistant editors and the editor, the other members giving helpful suggestions. These worth~while occupations continue until 4:15 when the staff of the "Blue and Gray," with a broad yellow stripe from leaning against the walls of the Student Council Room , adjourns until next week.

These lines, from the NEWS itself, expressed the aim and constant policy of J. J. Trumper and his junior journalists during the past year. Under him the enlarged and increasingly versatile staff has sought to publish the truth and at the same time give the public, we students, what we want. The year has marked a greater use of photographs, snappier write~ups , and a wide field of news cov erage, all of which have channeled our thoughts and all of which have done a great deal to mold our habits of thinking. Willing and expert best describe Mr. Howeth, the NEWS' new faculty adviser, who is responsible not a little for that great clamor around Martha 's desk when the word is quickly passed, "The NEWS is here!!"

NORMAN BAILEY.

WHAT A LIFE! Following their recent custom, the members of the senior class combined their talents with the Centenary Players to produce Clifford Goldsmith 's hilarious comedy, "What a Life," with Henry Aldrich. Mr. Cadigan was, as usual, given the difficult, exacting, and seemingly endless task of directing the show. From the middle of January, when the play was chosen, until the 24th of March, the last performance of the play, Mr. Cadigan was always on the job.

This year an ambitious schedule of performances was undertaken and maintained: there were, besides the regular evening performance, a show for the Overbrook School for the Blind, one for the Alumni , and a matinee for the Lower School.

The credit for perfect casting goes to Mr. Cadigan. No one who saw the play will forget Carl Levinson's portrayal of Henry. Praise also goes to Betty Philson for capturing the audiences' hearts as Barbara. Tom Ogden was a convincing George Bigelow as was Bob Bartle's Missouri rendition of Ferguson. Ellen Ann Roberts turned out to be an ideal Mrs. Aldrich. John Carson's portrayal of Mr. Bradley, the principal, was so natural that some would hesitate to call it acting. Albert Porter (alias Happy) Earle upheld the spirit of romance by serving as the male love interest in the role of the handsome Mr. Nelson. Sue ·Munsell was the attractive secretary who wooed and won Mr.

Nelson. Credit also goes to Dot Gotwald and Barbara Darlington, who made big successes out of small parts. Paul French was excellent in the part of Mr. Patterson, an irate teacher. The rest of the cast was mainly underclassmen who did fine jobs in their parts. Other people who contributed as well to the success of the play are listed below.

JOHN JONES.

SERVICE CLUB Although the war slowed up the work of the Service Club somewhat, there was still a considerable amount accomplished. At the beginning of the year a sum of money was sent to the Schofield Normal and Industrial School for colored children in Aiken , South Carolina. Due to the rationing problem, this year, the school was unable to provide a number of poor families with Thanks~ giving and Christmas baskets. But when the Red Cross and War Chest drives were launched, Friends' Central was well represented. A goal was set in each class, and everyone strived to meet that and go over the top . At the end of the drive, the final sum was five times the amount of the goal.

The American Friends' Serv ice Committee Units Club, which was organ ~ ized about two years ago, did a great deal of commendable work. The cooper~ ative group worked to help to improve conditions on the campus. This included cleaning the snow from the various walks; cleaning the skating pond; taking down the grandstands in the fall , and putting them up in the spring. Also, through the Units Club, mittens were knitted, squares for blankets were wov en, and stuffed animals were made for underprivileged children throughout the United States and other countries.

The Service Club has representatives from the boys and girls of each class in the junior and senior high schools. Their purpose is to help improv e condi~ tions on the school grounds and in the community. They also give their help to as many as possible.

FOOTBALL Introducing the T ~formation into football at Friends' Central. Mr. Frank Fitts gave the varsity eleven a difficult system to learn. Pem Minster, captain and tackle, and Bob Peiffer, fullback , were the only two remaining lettermen. The first eleven consisted of these two seniors, one junior, seven sophomores, and one freshman.

The 1943 season consisted of eight games, starting with Swarthmore College J. V. Friends' Central led 6-0 at the half, but with the weight advantage held by Swarthmore, they came from behind to take the game, 13~6. The seventh game, versus Hill School at Pottstown, was a tough one to lose. The lack of reserves finally spelled defeat for the Blue and Gray. With both right ends, Jerry Trumper and Doug Taylor, helped from the field with knee injuries, Mr. Fitts was forced to shift Pem Iv'Iinster to end. Going into the second half, Friends' Central led, 7-6. A few plays after the half had opened Pem Minster dislocated his jaw; and John Eavenson, a guard, moved to end. With three first line men missing and the lineup juggled, Hill went on to two more touchdowns and wound up on the long end of a 20-7 score.

The final game brought a victory to the Blue and Gray. Although much lighter than their opponents from P . S. D., the Greenfield twins, Don and Doug, ran wild.

The T worked rapidly; and the twins, Hog and Peiffer, all scored on smooth running plays engineered by Walt Armstrong , the left handed quarter back. With the T working and Mr. Fitts' excellent coaching bearing fruit, F . C. S. came off with a 38-6 victory.

With a good nucleus for next year and the added interest gained by the school's re~entrance to the Interacademic League, there is small possibility of an unsuccessful season.

VARSITY HO CllEY The girls' varsity hockey team under the guidance of Miss Blackbur~ finished the most successful hockey season in the history of the school. At the end of the season, the count was four victories, one tie, and one defeat.

The season opened on October 14, as Friends' Select fell to the score of 10~1. Westtown was defeated by the Centralites, 6 ~ 1. Our game with Stevens was called off after the first half because of rain with a 1~1 tie. The next gam e was with Irwin, who in the past had always defeated us. At the final whistle, the score was 6~1 in favor of Friends' Central. Baldwin was the next opponent.

The score was 2~ 1 in our favor. On November 18, the Centralites journeyed to Shipley to receive their only setback of the year. The score was 6~4 in Shipley·s favor.

When the All Main Line Team was chosen, there were six Central maids on the first team and two on the second. On the first team's lineup were : Sue Millick, Barbara Homer, Ellen Fitts, Doris Greenwood, Diane Bault, and Sally Carson. Ruth Cor! and Hoylande Jones were on the second string.

Only two team members will be lost through graduation, Captain Ruth Corl and Sue Williams. Here's hoping next year's team under the able leader~ ship of Sue Millick will have an even more successful season.

THE SOCCER TEAM The group of fellows that signed up for soccer last fall did so with three definite aims : To play the game, to have fun , and to win ! As a member of that team, I feel safe in saying that to a greater or lesser degree, we accomplished all three.

We played the game clean and hard, and when it was over the majority of us felt that we had given our best.

Also, we had fun; above all we had fun . As individuals we felt the pleasure that came from the thud of leather on leather, the sight of the ball sailing down the field , a goalie's magnificent block, a forward's clever pass which ended in a goal.

As a group, we experienced the satisfaction of smooth teamwork. There were those times when the eleven moved as one: cutting, passing, centering the ball until the opponent's defense cracked. Nor was the fun only in the games. There was a spirit of friendship and fellowship , of good-natured kidding to be found everywhere-at practice in school, and of course, in that great institution, the locker room .

Lastly, in our third aim, we did not fail. The winning of our first encounter, a practice game, may have bred a false conceit for we were forced to " bite the dust" for several weeks after that. Sometimes we were definitely outplayed, but at other times, as in the Penn Charter game when we held the final outcome was in the hands of fate .

Late in the season, we met and defeated Germantown Academy in a truly magnificent game. The spirit, the teamwork, the success of the squad was at its highest. Moreover, the victory gave us a place in the Inter-academic League.

After another league game and a few intra-mural ones our season closed, a season of accomplished aims and ha ppy memories, a season destined to be reviewed , when in later years, and distant places, the boys of '44 find them selves together.

BASKETBALL Although the season started off with defeats, as the games went by the team gained the confidence and spirit that was lacking; and after having won three and lost three they really made us proud of them. On Friday, March 18th, on the Friends' Central court, the Blue and Gray team beat Penn Charter, 34-32. This was a great send-off for Captain Bill Snyder, who was playing his last ball game before leaving for the Army on the 22nd. The game was close from the first, the score being a 17-17 tie at the half. Then the Fittsmen went to town. Scoring from all over the court, they took a lead of six points at the end of the third quarter, 28-22. Friends' Central then came through to take a wider lead of eight points; with four minutes to go the score read 32-24, but Penn Charter wasn't licked yet. Their captain, George Hauptfuhrer, started a one-man rally and racked up four straight baskets to tie the score at 32 all.

With the year's most staggering upset hanging on hinges, a quick pivot was made from just short of the foul line. The ball dropped through the cords to place Friends' Central ahead, 34-32, and with one minute to go the Blue and Gray held the lead for the biggest upset of the year. The courtmen couldn't be stopped after this, and they finished the season with five more wins. Members of our squad who gained honors were Chuck Clark, who made first team forward on the Interac Team; and Charlie Krug, second team center; while Pem Minster and Walt Armstrong received honorable mention. Chuck also led the team in scoring and was second in the league with 230 points. Charlie Krug scored second on the team and fifth in the Interacs.

GIRLS' VARSITY BASKETBALL The 1944 Girls' Varsity Basketball season opened with a bang, when the team defeated Westtown. This was only a preview of what was to come, for the girls carried out last y ear's tra dition and came through w ith a n undefeated season. There were never produer people than Captain Sue Williams and Coach Liza Blackburn. Sue Millick, high scorer; Pat Rowe, Dot Gotwald, and Marion Beatty all did a wonderful job as forwards and rolled up the points for their team. Sue Williams, Alice Hess, Ellen Fitts, and Holande Jones certainly carried out their jobs to the letter as gua rds and kept the opposing scores wa.Y down . Incidentally the second team also won every game.

Next year 's team will miss Dot Gotwald and Sue Williams, but whatever happens the team will do its best. Here's hoping tha t they too w ill come through with an unbroken record.

VARSITY LACROSSE Last year's lacrosse team finished one of the most successful seasons in the history of the school. The team ended the season with a record of three victories, one loss, and one draw.

The team started the season by turning back Shipley, 7- 1. The next match with Baldwin ended, 6-3, in fav or of the Centralites. The next opponent, Irwin, defeated the Blue and Gray team , 5-3. On May 6th the Centralites met the Swarthmore High lacrosse team. At the final whistle of this hard-fought game the score was 1- 1. The Swarthmore team has never been defeated by a school team in the twelve years it has been playing lacrosse, and up until we tied them they had never been tied. The team finished the season by swamping the Alumnae, 9-1 .

Not only have we lost a lot of last year's team , but we have also lost Coach Jackie Fehling. This year Molly Boileau will coach the team which has Sue Millick, Marian Beatty, Sue Williams, Ellen Fitts, Doris Greenwood, and Diane Bault returning from last year's team. We hope Liz Ravdin , who was unable to play last year because of illness, but who was on the team two years ago, will be back with us this year. With the aid of some of the members of the second team and the freshmen we hope the team, captained by Ellen Fitts, will have a successful season.

TRACE Starting the 1944 track season with only two lettermen returning, Albert Earle and Winfield Carson, Mr. Frank Fitts, who coached his first Blue and Gray track team, began workouts two weeks before spring vacation. Eighteen candidates turned out for the first drill. This was the largest cinder~squad in five years. Two new seniors, mainstays of the court quintet, helped the outcome of the season : Charlie Krug, weightman and high ~jumper ; and Chuck Clark, sprint~man and 440~yard runner. During the vacation most of the team's time was spent on the track at Swarthmore College in preparation for first big meet, the Penn Relays, held the last weekend in April. In these workouts, John Carson, broad ~jumper; Dave Nicholson , high~jumper ; Emil D 'Alesio , 440~yard runner and sprintman ; Dick Randall , distance runner ; Jim Spatola, half~miler ; the Greenfield twins, Doug and Don, both good sprintmen ; Carl Thomas, weightman ; Norm Robinson, miler; Jim Pooley, hurdler and jumper, brighten the outlook of the cinder season. Along with " Hap" Earle, distance man ; Win Carson, 440~yard runner ; and the addition of last year's second track letter~ men, the new members of the squad formed a potential track team for '44.

Meets for the season were with Haverford and Swarthmore Fresh, Westtown School, Germantown Friends' and Germantown Academy. The most important meet of the year, the Interacademic Championships, were held on Friday, May 26, at the Haverford College track.
