Margaret is a great reader. It is hard to find a novel that she cannot discuss. Another of her special interests is sports, especially horse-back riding. She spends a great deal of time swimming at the Penn Athletic Club, and the awards and honors that she has received prove her ability.

Henry entered our ranks in his sophomore year. He has distinguished himself as a member of the football squad for the past three seasons. His favorite pastime is wrecking Sutton's car under the name of Benjamin. He can usually be found at the door of our dances.

Our only complaint against Ben is that he did not become one of us soon enough.

He was a member of our football team for two years. Somehow, he acquired a creamcolored Ford last summer and we are afraid it has a tendency to distract him from his studies. Ben is also one of these "smoothie" dancers. He is destined to become a great swordsman. If you ever want Ben just look for Will Lane, his right hand man.

Harry is the business manager of this publication and he makes a good one. He is a member of the school orchestra, having learned his technique in that famous Staunton Military Academy Band. The record for goldbricking this year is undoubtedly Harry's. But nevertheless he dces very well and we are proud to include him in our class.

Nate is the class aviator. Having tired of trying to kill himself in his "Chevy," he has decided to take up aviation. His efforts in this undertaking are meritorious and it is with great pride that we point to his collection of aerial paraphernalia. However, this past year he has been pining for that little number in Pittsburgh.

This lad can't seem to make up his mind as to just what school to attend, having left Friends' Central for Penn Charter and returning to us in his junior year. And may we ask just when he intends to get his Dad's shotgun out of hock, along with a typewriter and other objects? "Helen's promise to be on time always carries a lot of wait."

Tripo, tripere, falli, bumptus. We're not conjugating a Latin verb, but describing Helen at most any time-in a hasty effort to catch the bus, or enter the classroom before 9:20. We all tease her continually but she's very good-natured and can a lways laugh with us. She is quite a movie fan and although she claims she doesn't read very much, she has a remarkable knowledge of European History with all the royal families untangled.

Libby has a flare for style and wearing clothes well. She carries herself with poise and reserve and possesses a dignified manner. Her voice is sweet and now and then reveals a giggle and an air of excitement. She's a loyal supporter of the Glee Club and a conscientious student who is bound to make good at Penn Hall.

Dancing, curly hair, math, and an ankle bracelet-these are some of the things for which we know Dottie best. We have all marvelled at her genius for doing math of any kind. Her light-hearted outlook on life and her friendly smile are what make her so particularly well liked. Best of all is her ambition to be a great dancer. Lots of success, Dottie.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is what is known as a very fine specimen of versatility. Not only does he dance well, but he also plays football and runs on the track team. His Ford can be seen anytime after 2:35 at Lower Merion. Guess why? And who has not complained about the muffler on his car? He can be heard from Wayne to Overbrook.

Will aspires to West Point next year and it is our private opinion that he will make the grade. He will make a fine cadet. Will is a member of that trio owning "30" Ford roadsters and his is one of the best. Not only is he studious, but he can boot a football far ther than the other boys. He was a member of the football squad this year.

If Mary Jane's not giggling she's struggling with a peanut chew. She is full of pep and has a willing and generous nature. As president of the Service Club, she showed the greotest enthusiasm and efficiency. And it is this lively interest which she takes in things that makes us sure of her success in any undertaking of the future.

Buffs Ford, however, has a habit of running faster than the law allows and is not so sure. Charles proved his mettle in that Episcopal soccer game last fall and is never found to be among the missing at any social event. Buff has tried the suggestion given in our catalogue; namely, that of attending Friends' Central from kindergarten to college.

Miggie is our little country girl. but that doesn't me:::rn that she is behind the 'limes at all. She has a rather quiet but congenial nature and a friendly disposition towards everyone. Her long lashes, her sweet smile, and her genius for doing math are her distinguishing traits- to say nothing of her fondness for red and "fords."

Royal has chosen the field of archaeology for his profession. Since this profession requires a man who is industrious as well as earnest, we are sure that he will succeed. When you see "Hazie" appare::1tly in deep concentration, he is not always thinking of archaeology, however, for there is in Pitman, New Jersey, someone who is likely to draw his attention ....

Ah well! While he has attended Friends' Central he has distinguished himself in athletics more than a few times.

Bobs is very active and always on the go. She is either writing articles for the "f. C. S. News," playing on one of the girls' teams, or dashing some place in her car. It must not be forgotten that her driving is very helpful to those less fortunates who have no cars. As a student, Bobs works hard, with Middlebury as her aim and Alabama her inspiration.

Needless to say, Charley is that end which we have seen so often during football games the past two years. If he is not there he will be in Benjamin's Ford any cold morning. Outside of these extra-curricular activities Charley is very studious and conscientious. We wonder, sometimes, why he is attracted to Upper Darby, surely it isn't a girl, Charley.

He has been one of us since fourth grade.

It is very handy to have him in our class, for, many mornings a certain member of '35 comes in without any homework done, and it is always possible to gel the answers from Lew. When it comes to kicking that old soccer ball around, Lew is one cf the best.

Mary has undoubtedly carried more responsibility than any other member of the class-but who is more capable of doing so? With her as a leader, any undertaking is a sure success, because she is so full of enthusiasm, initiative, and good ideas. In everything she does, she adds life and pep with her bubbling laugh and radiating personality.

Although the members of the class do not know it, Bill can really sing. His principal trouble is that he is a little modest about it He finds himself more or less popular with the opposite sex, but we think he likes it Bill is also a dependable player on the soccer field. He was a good president for us in our junior year.

Janie was one of our first to master the art of knitting-but we know she'll never be an old maid because she has such a winning personality, so much style and good taste in dress. She is one of the class favorites because of her sweet disposition and impartiality and she doesn't seem to have a care in the world.

Margaret is of Scotch parentage and is consequently very much interested in anything pertaining to Scotland- but she has no apparent Scottish traits. She is an active member of the Glee Club, very fond of music and admits a strong dislike for bridge. And of course no one need be told that her favorite haunt is a little black Ford with an Episcopal sticker on the windshield.

A wealth of glossy yellow hair and a lovely "school-girl" complexion- these characterize Lallie's striking appearance which is set off by her style and good taste in dress. She has streaks of strong determination and a will to finish what she sets about to do. Lallie has a good sense of humor, a friendly nature, and is good company.

Fi has the distinction of being the only member of our class to receive a gold hockey stick for playing on the Varsity hockey team three years. She drives a Dodge to school which arrived one winter morning with fenders badly dented. But it remains a mystery to this day what happened-for Fi is a good driver-we know that from our afternoon airings. Maybe the radio required too much of her attention.

HE Class of '35 welcomes you to these our Class Day Exercises. As we gather here today, many fond memories come to us of the pleasant years we have spent in Friends' Central.

Amid beautiful surroundings, we have grown up making friendships, many of which will undoubtedly continue throughout our lives. Here we have learned lessons which will help us face the problems of the life into which we are about to enter. Under the direction and guidance of the faculty, we have gained in knowledge; we have learned discipline; we have been trained in athletic activities, and we have developed social relationships.

And with all the work we have done, we have had a great deal of fun, for these have been the happy days of our youth. We thank you, our parents, for making these opportunities possible. And to you, Dr. Jones, and to you, teachers, we extend our appreciation of your kindness and consideration and the patient way in which you have met our shortcomings.

There are certain days which stand out in the life of everyone, and tomorrow will be one of those days. We are standing on the threshold of life, ready to go forth-to what we do not know, but with a feeling of confidence and preparedness in our hearts.

As we approach the horizon of graduation, we see yet farther horizons off in the distance. Our El Dorados loom up before us in the forms of college, business life, and in the establishing of homes in the future . We are filled with both gladness and regret because we leave behind memories of years spent with delightful companions in these beautiful surroundings. We want to thank the faculty members for their helpful guidance and teaching. We, like Stevenson, have labored toward the goal of graduation and feel keenly the severing of the cords that bind us. Tomorrow, when we are graduated, we shall be able to go out into the world fitted for whatever may be before us. OW that we come to the end of our school life in Friends' Central we take a breathing space and look back to discover just what we did.

Only a few of us who are here now entered in the Lower School and memories of that time are rather vague. With Mrs. Fogg as our able chaperone we went for an imaginary trip around the world and upon our return gave an International Tea. The rest of the time which wasn't taken up with school work was spent playing "Hide and Go Seek" in the woods and on the three new swings and seesaws.

Then came the Upper School- entering E Class we gazed around and felt quite insignificant, particularly in the presence of the Seniors, who seemed so superior. However, th D's gave us a Hallowe'en party which completely "broke the ice" and we soon felt very much at home.

On we went to D Class and here our big disappointment was that the usual Gettysburg trip was abandoned. In our turn we welcomed theE's with a party. That year we began wearing lipstick and high heels in spite of frequent admonitions.

InC Class we spent much of the time rehearsing a play to be given in assembly which-alas-we never did give. We began biology-.a subject dreaded by most of us and the redeeming feature of that, a trip to Mt. Holly, was relinquished. We also had frequent and heated discussions as to what to give Mrs. Small's baby- in the end the poor child received nothing.

Again we were doomed to disappointment in our Sophomore year when our wish to have a dance was unfilled. Our biggest thrill that year came in carrying the daisy chain at commencement. We formed an acquaintance with William, a picture of a Fifty-e ight

simply beautiful hippopotamus given us by Mrs. Webster. Dear William, we still treasure you.

Juniors! We gave the Seniors their annual luncheon and originated the idea of giving them a Commencement Dance. We received our class rings and had a most successful Prom at the Aronomink Club. Mention must also be made of Louise Woodcock's superb dance about which we still talk.

Now we became the dignified Seniors, although we certainly felt just the opposite. One of our good deeds was reviving the trip to Washington, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Our Prom was a success and we had a luncheon given us which made us all feel very wonderful. There were many parties and dances whose good times still remain in our minds.

Truly, looking back and recalling the fun we have had makes us leave the school with a lingering sigh.

Class History BOYS HE Boys' Class of 1935 started its career in Overbrook nine long years ago. Miss Thoms started them off in the 4th grade.

Among the founders we have Alfred Vanderbeck, Louis Kirk, Crawford Sutton, and Royal Hassrick. In the fifth grade under the direction of Mrs. Fogg, the class made volcanos and wrote diaries.

Fred Fenton and Charles Fox joined the class that year. Our seventh grade year is one that will live long in the memories of the class. Everyone felt like a grown man for we had left the Lower School and graduated to the rank of upper schoolmen.

We were also fortunate in receiving John Sykes and Bill Mason as members. Albert Vick, Nathan Cope, Jim Darling, and George Talbot arrived in ninth grade. That year we became more deeply imprinted by the fact that we had the privilege of being under the supervision of the finest teacher at Friends' Central, namely "Tubby" Tobias. Since then he has gone to Guilford College. We have him to thank for our splendid trips to Buck Hill Falls each year. In tenth grade, we welcomed Henry Baxter and Charles Paul. As Juniors we hailed Ed Benjamin, Bill Lane, Arthur Kohler, Harry Butcher, and Charles Keinath. Some of our greatest personalities entered that year. In our senior year, Wilbur Fish, Horace Wolf, Pete Richards, Thomas Thompson, and Frank Yeager joined our class. We now total twenty-four.

But enough for the class's members. Let us talk a little of its activities. We have always been rather well represented in athletics. We were first recognized in the Lower School when members of our class were on the 80 lb. championship football team. The first eleven received a coveted gold football. We had members on the varsity squads as early as in the eighth grade.

As the years passed, we produced better and better material and, in 1933, we tied for the Inter-Academic Football Champion-

ship. The Captains of Football, Soccer, Baseball and Track are members of our class. All save four are varsity lettermen.

Not only in sports do we excel but likewise in academics.

Over half of the class expect to attend colleges or universities.

Colleges from all sections of the country will receive students from our membership. The careers range from professional to vocational occupations.

As for interesting events, our class has done more than the ordinary. We have visited museums, manufacturing industries and commercial plants. V'l e have taken mid-winter vacations to Buck Hill Falls from our Freshman year to our Senior. As for social life, we are quite lively. Both our Junior and Senior dances have gone over with a bang. Our bi-weeklies have been exceptionally good. Every year, for the past three, members of our class have done much to lighten the burden of the school. Parties, dances, dinners, and house parties have added to our fun. In short, our last three years have been most enjoyable and profitable.

E

VERY member of the class of 1935 has thought at some time or other what a perfectly splendid class his was. Each of us, though he has enjoyed being a part of such a select group, has not realized, we are afraid, how outstanding our class really is. For example, we have in our midst one of the most attractive girls and one of the best looking boys that one could hope to find anywhere. IL however, there is no market for charm of general appearance, our class can furnish such wide diversities as the best complexion or the best liar, the most sophisticated or the biggest feet, the most dignified, or the best athlete, We even offer such alluring attractions as the best legs, teeth, eyebrows, eyelashes, etc., or the most conceited, bashfuL etc. Just to prove to ourselves that these statements were true and valid, each senior in good standing cast his ballot for members of his class who possessed unusual gifts in unusual combinations or amounts.

These ballots brought to light so many potential Garbos, Roosevelts, and what-nots that with the permission of the class, we have recorded the results below. Cast your eyes along the list and review for yourselves the qualities of the members of the class of 1935.

How's your tour coming on? I saw the Ballet when you were here last and meant to come back to see you, but I just couldn't seem to make it.

Remember years ago, when we were in school, you always wanted to be a dancer? By the way- speaking of old timesI saw "La Stoutenburgh's Fashion Review" yesterday. "One of the best dressed matrons there was the former Betty Louise Stewart, of Philadelphia." Can you beat that? Stewie! I was talking to her and she says she still keeps track of the old crowd. Not so hard, with some of themI see Laura Muller's 'husband has four All-American players on his football team this year. And Louise Woodcock- well, you know about her. She's playing in "Romeo and Juliet" now. You must see it. She had a marvelous writeup, I'm sending it and while you're reading just take a look at the other side. How's that for a "Hero and Leander" stunt?

Margaret Baker always was reckless.

You know, on looking through that paper it seems to have a lot in it about people we know. Clare Warren won the Women's Tennis Championship and Ruthie Watkins is all over the front page as usual. This time she's suing Betty Robinson for libel, because she featured Bettie Zearfaus in an imitation of her. Of course it was a burlesque show and that's not very flattering . Betty Kelly took a party to see it (she has the best ideas on entertainment) and she says that the show isn't so good, with the exception of Helen Donnelly's juggling act.

She did say, however, that they had set some of Lois Kneas' lyrics to music and that they sound marvelous.

I went to Washington last week for the Inauguration. Mary Martin is just where she should be- vice-president. I heard some remarks about her election though- she flirted with the electors, so they say. You'd never guess who I saw down there. Helen Skilling! She's living on Embassy Row- some change from Sixty·s ix

President A venue. She was talking about Betty Wood and some of the others. Betty holds the record for riding "buckin' " broncos and Ruth Livingston, that of owning fur coats, she has 7,000,000.

She gets the fur from Eleanor Snyder, who is running a "Pet" farm or so she says. Personally I think she's bootlegging furs.

I got a dog there and I had to take it right down to the vetBobs Heward is ours. Margaret Barrows was there and I certainly was glad to see her. I had heard that she had beautiful children but I wasn't prepared for anything so lovely. She and her daughters are visting Margaret Garver.

Margaret has the best looking penthouse in the country. We all went down to visit Mary Jane Fleischer's Settlement House. Margaret Mitchell is giving all her profits to Mary Jane. She discovered the ninety-third element while looking for a cheaper way to make kilts. I think she better give some to Sophia Olsen. Sophia is still trying to prove that Aristotle's theory is correct.

I heard her on the radio lately from that new studio. Libby Dreher does all the sound effects there. She was talking about Edna Wagner.

She's on a World Cruise, you know. I got a postcard yesterday. She said she met our own "Queen" Polly Salam somewhere in the Orient.

I've been thinking, we have only one teacher among us.

Marjory Underdown spends half her time teaching Latin and half, leafing through magazines looking for millinery ads.

I could run on forever if I had the time, but I promised Jane McNeill I'd come for tea. She has a perfectly darling little house out in the country and it takes time to get there. So-that'll be all from William.

Boys' Prophecy T\ S WE were looking through some advanced issues of the Friends' Central h._ News the other day, we happened to notice the Alumni news in which were mentioned many of the Class of '35.

The first item of interest stated that Ed Benjamin, now engrossed in the hardware business, was playing professional football with the Chester Greenbacks, and was the only center in the league who could center the ball onehanded and throw the bull at the same time. It then stated that Henry Baxter was teaching an advanced course in Quaker History at Yale and Charlie Paul was making a fine football record at Notre Dame.

As we continued we found Harry Butcher to be a senior at Upper Darby High, having become a professional year-book manager, and that he was hoping to send himself through college with the profits, and Lew Kirk, in quest of higher education, was taking an extensive course at Antioch College. Reading on we learned that Art Kohler, Michigan's big left guard, was starting as vice-president of the Curtis Publishing Company and working up, that Jim Darling was seen around Leslie Edleman' s pawn shop carrying a rusty set of golf clubs and a tarnished gold ring, and that Pete Richards had come down with a disease resembling sleeping sickness and was having the time of his life.

In the second column we discovered that Charley Fox and Crawford Sutton had gone into the taxi business and were prospering, and that Fred Fenton was doing a fine optical business, having Tom Thompson directing publicity and handing out g~asses as floaters . Johnny Sykes was taking a

few

extra courses to pass college boards, and Bill Lane, now playing for the A's was batting under 600 and therefore considered retiring. Farther down the column we found that George Talbot, having moved back to Bristol was the only fireSixty-eight

chief in the world who could cover Pennsylvania in fifteen minutes flat, in a Chevrolet roadster, and that Nate Cope and Royal Hassrick had joined an auto school in an attempt to do away with reckless driving. Al Vanderbeck had given up commuting and had taken up a permanent residence at Lower Merion High School. Bill Mason had become "gray" with worry concerning the Bell Telephone Company.

The last four, but by no means the least, items of interest, informed us that Horace Wolf was appearing in the title role of that mystery thriller, "Many Men Smoke but Fu Manchu," that Al Vick was drawing fine cartoons and planting a few trees on the side to keep his father happy, and that Wilbur Fish ::md Charlie Keinath were running a public speaking course with Wilbur specializing in self-control. Lastly, we learned that Frank Yeager had become a

professional boxer

and could now uphold all of the Lansdowne traditions.

As we put awaY the paper we murmured "What a Class," and indeed, What a Class!

HE senior class undertook its trek to Washington despite the efforts of one member to hold up the entire party. After a comparatively uneventful but slightly damp morning's jaunt to Baltimore, where we consumed a delicious lunch, we continued on our way slightly wiser concerning pie a la mode and its effects. Our destination reached and rooms procured, we imme diately delved into the labyrinth of marvels at the Smithsonian Institution and its companion piece, the National Museum. After dinner, we were escorted in state (Short Line and Stevie) to the Fox Theatre, where we saw "Follies Bergere."

The effects of the nocturnal party were reduced to a minimum by four hours' sleep and the continued use of cold showers. Our first objective in the morning was the Bureau of Printing and Engraving in order to reacquaint ourselves with the physical properties of paper money, stamps, and bonds. From there we sallied forth to the Washington Monument where, in spite of Mrs. Crouch's repeated protests, some fair damsels climbed up or down 898 steps. We inspected the Capitol and viewed the Senate in action (if one can call it action).

That afternoon, on our way to Mount Vern on, we stopped at the Corcoran Museum of Art where we saw one of Mr. Pittman's paintings. We were pleasantly surprised to find Miss Eisenhower and Miss Munroe at Mount Vernon, waiting to greet us. We viewed the house and wended our way riverward to take pictures and rest a bit. On the way home, we visited the Masonic Memorial Temple. The Congressional Library and the movies claimed us in the evening and afterwards we gave a party, in spite of fussy ladies, night watchmen, and bell boys.

The Treasury Building and the White House appeared on the schedule for Wednesday morning. The afternoon's objectives were Embassy Row, the Zoo, and the National Cathedral, where we left a donation towards a memorial stone.

Wednesday evening we enjoyed another trip to the movies and a party afterwards.

The thought of visiting Annapolis cheered us Thursday morning. Unfortunately, though, the Middies and we pursued opposite paths. We inspected the Memorial Chapel and boats and aeroplanes before we hustled away for lunch and Conowingo. It was raining too hard to stop there, so we arrived home in time for dinner.

Before parting, the whole class enthusiastically and gratefully voted Mr. and Mrs. Crouch the world's best chaperons.

HE Glee Club is an organization of the girls in the four upper classes. It meets every week and gives one concert a season, in addition to a Christmas program and several radio broadcasts. At Christmas time the Club also gives recitals at various homes and hospitals. Although a comparatively recent organization, it has prospered greatly under the direction of Miss Melba Abbott, and has a larger membership now than at any time in its existence.

N THE whole, the hockey season was a good one. We won the first game, which was with Sacred Heart, and four others with Baldwin, Holman, Sayward's and last but not least, the Alumni. Only three were lost, to Springside, Westtown, and Moorestown. We tied Friends' Select and Irwin's. The Irwin's game was the best of the season. Irwin had won all of its games and we had lost three. Our team went to meet them on their home field, with little hope to win or tie; but with determination to put up a hard fight. It was a fast and well played game and what a thrill it was when the score ended in a tie!

Much of our success we owe to the ninth graders who, despite being handicapped by inexperience, made varsity and worked as well as the veterans of the squad. With their aid, the hockey seasons of the future will be even finer than former ones.

Girls' Basketball HE basketball season was a very interesting one. Our first game, which was with Sayward's, was won by a large score. A period of bad luck followed in which we lost to Sacred Heart, Springside, Holman, Moorestown, Stevens, Wilmington Friends, and Friends' Select. We are proud to say that none of these was lost by very large scores and several of them by only one or two points. How happy we were to win our last game, which was with Tower Hill. We surely started and ended our season in the right way.

The school may well be proud of the second team. It went through its season undefeated and untied. This team has remained victorious for three seasons straight.

Lacrosse HE lacrosse season had a very fine start, and it will probably be very successful. The new coach, Miss Libby Toulmin, center on the All-Philadelphia lacrosse team, is greatly interested in the sport, and her encouragement and help have greatly increased the enthusiasm of the squad. Babs Heward, the captain of the team, also has spurred the team on by her good playing.

The first game against Swarthmore was lost by a 5-7 score.

However we were proud to have done so well against so strong a team. The second game was played with Baldwin's by a score of 5-l. The third game with Germantown Friends was lost, but the spirit with which the team has entered into the games prophesies an interesting if not a winning season.

Football HE 1934 Friends' Central football team upheld the fine records of previous teams and finished the regular season with four wins, two ties, and two losses. Friends' Central, although not entered in the 1934 Interacademic League, played a stiff schedule against ranking opponents.

Fewer than twenty-five candidates reported for the first practice early in September. The material, on the whole, was inexperienced but willing to learn and showed vast improvement as the season progressed. The team won its opening game against Roxborough High by the score of 7-0. Its next opponent, Malvern Prep, defeated Friends' Central in a gruelling battle, 19-0. Next came Germantown Academy, which also defeated the Blue and Gray, 19-0, in a game that was deplete of thrills. The squad took a new lease on life and, in its next regular game, swamped the Swarthmore College Junior Varsity by a 39-0 count. On the upward path, the team upset an undefeated Bryn Athyn team by a surprisingly large score, 24-6. The next opponent was Abington High, which held a fighting Friends' team to a 0-0 stalemate. In a hasty revision of schedules, Malvern Prep was again an opponent and by a last minute touchdown and the extra point the team tied them 7-7. The final game of the year, against Chestnut Hill Academy, saw a vastly improved team outplay the Hillers in every stage of the game, the final score being 13-0.

It is interesting to note that ten of the eleven men on the varsity played the season without missing more than ten minutes' action of the entire schedule, a real iron man feat. A large nucleus will return next year and, with our beloved coach Doug Crate guiding them, they should cover themselves and Friends' Central with glory on the gridiron.

Soccer HE 1934 soccer team was unsurpassed in fighting spirit. As was last year's team, it was composed mainly of rookies.

T There were five letter men, the se being the only ones with any real experience. The rest of the team had to be formed from a small squad. As a team, we lacked the ability to "click." To counteract this weakness, however, our defense was one of the best in the league. Actually, there were only two teams on our regular schedule that made any score before the second half.

The opening game was with Penn Charter. Our ·squad lacked practice, while Penn Charter seemed to be in fine condition. The first quarter was scoreless. In the second period Charter opened up and scored two g oals. We scored once. The game ended 6-l, favor of P. C. Next, w e met Germantown Academy on the home grounds. Germantown stood as one of the strong contenders for the Interac title. The half ended with a deadlock 0-0. In the third period G . A. scored their lone goal. The game finally was terminated with the Academy winning l-0. Reqardless of defeat, the squad showed great improvement, and displayed fine skill as compared with the first game of the season.

The Germantown Friends' qame was lost 4-0 and the Friends' Select game 3-0. Following this slump we realized our first win of the season. The Hillers scored the first goal only to be followed by an F. C. score. Toward the latter part of the first half, F. C. scored again , making the score 2-l. In this game several changes were made in the lineup, which seemed to be a good move, resulting in this first win. The final score was 3-l in favor of F. C. After reaching such a peak at mid-season the team seemed to coast through to the finish. Despite the fact that the last two games were lost, we went d own fighting. In these last two games we were victims of Haverford School and Episcopal, the last game being the one in which we almost returned to old form; spending most of the second half in Episcopal's territory.

In summing up the season, mention is due Mr. Nicholson, our faithful coach. "Nickie," as he is known around the campus, had patience and persistence in grooming such a green squad, as we had, into a fighting group which made every team in the league step.

Varsity Basketball OACH CRATE'S Varsity Basketball team undertook a difficult schedule of fourteen games. Moorestown Friends' was the first victim: Score, 27-9.

The second game was with the powerful Merchantville High team.

Merchantville piled up 28 points, the varsity, 18.

Next came George School. The first half the Georgians were held to 10-10.

The final half the Cratemen froze out the visitors, and the game ended 35-26.

Next the varsity defeated Olney High 19-16. This placed the Cratemen in the spotlight. The outstanding playing of Bill Lane and Frank Yeager made victory possible.

Then the Triangle A. A. game which the Cratemen had no trouble in winning 46-25.

On January 11, the team defeated the Swarthmore J. V.'s by a score of 35-22.

The first Interac League game was played against Germantown Friends.

Statzell and Fischer scored the first goals. The last period Fischer and Marsh played brilliantly and the game ended 32-17. "Butch" Marsh scored 17 of the 32 points.

Next the traditional game with Penn Charter. From the start the Cratemen played a splendid offensive game, sinking shots from all over the floor. The first quarter ended 12-3 in favor of the Cratemen. Lane proved as slippery as an eel and worried the visitors. With only 10 seconds to play in the second half, Jones shot a spectacular field goal to put the visitors aheo:d and to win the game 24-23.

Along came Haverford, but some culprit had placed a jinx on their net.

Trotter and Statzell tried hard but could not meet the Fordians' demands.

The Cratemen then journeyed to Chestnut Hill. Frank Yeager and Bill Lane hurled the ball through the cords many times, but the Hillers just barely nosed out the Cratemen, 33-31.

The game with Episcopal found the Cratemen in wonderful form. The traditional battle found Fischer, Lane, Trotter, and Marsh worrying the Churchmen.

A minute before the end of the second half "Butch" Marsh sank a foul and won ihe game 20-19.

February 20, the Cratemen met Montgomery School. Everyone on the squad had a share in defeating the visitors 59-8.

The next game, Germantown Academy, started off with the usual speed.

Excellent playing made welcome a 32-15 victory for the Cratemen.

The final game was against the Blue and Gray Alumni team. The varsity star was Bill Lane and the game ended 41-11 in favor of the Cratemen.

In passing, the Varsity Basketball Squad wishes to pay tribute to Doug Crate for his splendid interest and for teaching them sportsmanship as well as dean playing.

ITH the graduation of such stellar players as Frank Gatling, Eddie Givens, Bob English, and many others, Coach Crate was forced to build an almost entirely new team. Only four veterans remained, two infielders and two outfielders. The Coach had to make numerous changes, thus many played one position one game and another the next.

Friends' Central, co-holders of the interacademic crown in 1934, opened its 1935 season by being beaten by Central High School, 16-ll. Neither team played its best brand of ball because of the weather conditions. The next game saw the Blue and Gray open up its Interac League schedule with Chestnut Hill, at St. Martins. As in the Central game we played good ball in the early innings and by the sixth inning were leading our rivals, 5-3. Chestnut Hill rallied and won out 6-5 by virtue of numerous errors. The high-lights for the home team were the hitting of Frank Yeager and Ben Statzell. Disappointed, though not discouraged, Friends' Central awaited Episcopal Academy. A defeat would eliminate F. C. from all chance of winning the Interac crown. For three innings we held our own with the visitors but in the fourth many mental errors gave Episcopal five runs and the game, thus eliminating us from the championship race. Defeat was due to the poor hitting of the Friends' Central batsmen.

We then played Lansdowne High and our losing streak was broken, for we walloped them to a l 0-3 score. This game was pitched by Bill Blair, a freshman who missed the Hall of Fame by the narrowest of margins, giving Lansdowne but one hit. Bill got three hits and batted in four runs. Big things are expected of him in his future years at Friends' Central. The team has many games, still to be played. Among them are Germantown Academy, Haverford School, Penn Charter, George School, Bryn Athyn and others.

Though the team did not win the Interacademic Championship, Coach Crate is looking forward with an optimistic viewpoint regarding next year for he will have a veteran team. The squad was as follows: Infielders, Statzell, Fischer, Yeager, Heller; outfielders, Mory, Lord-Wood, E. Marsh, Lane; and batterymen, R. Marsh, Fish, Blair and Richards; Manager Thompson.

Track TARTING the season with severe handicaps, namely, the loss of outstanding members through graduation and the small squad, the Friends' Central track team, coached by Mr. Folwell Scull, Jr., started its schedule with a 39-34 win over Germantown Friends. The meet being the first, the team was not in very good shape but with the excellent showing of Bill Munroe, who captured the 100-yard dash and 220, there seems to be a nucleus for future successes. Albert Vick took second place in the mile; Royal Hassrick, second in the half mile; Henry Baxter and Art Kohler tied for second in the shot-put at 39 feet. The meet was decided by Charles Keinath and Bill Mason who won first and second places in the quarter mile.

The mile relay team which competed in the Penn Relays was not able to compare with the championship time of Episcopal Academy. Although at times they ran third, they were unable to stay up. Bill Munroe, Bill Mason, Charles Keinath, and Albert Vick who made up the team ran good laps even though they were unable to place in the final.

With future meets including the Interacs, a favorable season is anticipated with Bill Munroe and Arthur Kohler in the 100, Munroe and Ed Benjamin in the 220, Charles Keinath and Bill Mason in the quarter mile, and Royal Hassrick in the half mile; Albert Vick in the broad jump, Henry Baxter and Art Kohler in the shot-put, and Charles Keinath in the high jump to complete the field events.
