~irl~' ~~~torp Though it is said that history repeats itself, unfortunately, or perchance fortunately, the history of the illustrious Class of '24 never could be repeated.

INCEPTION

On that bright morning of September when we a sembled at Room "20-A:' some from the elementary schools and others who had never before employed the "thee" and "thou" so symbolic of the Friends' institutions, we were in a true state of inception. We met there our first teacher at Friends' Central. Mrs. Hawley, who immediately took us under her wing and endeavored to make us real Friends' Centralites. 'Ve, in any event, think she "done noble."

Ab , the amo, amare, amavi, amatus, which expresses so musically in Latin the spirit which has always pervaded our class. While it was truly in our hearts, it just wouldn't stay in our heads.

Our first class meeting was held with great ceremony, after due coaching on the part of Mrs. Hawley. We elected as President, Julie Chapman; Vice-President, Hazel Dillman; Secretary, Mary Nelms and Treasurer, Emilie Moore. For some inexplicable reason at that time we gladly paid our class dues. Why not now, girls?

Has our sense of value increased? 'Ve were not officially real Friends' Centralites, socially at least, until after Class "D" gave us a party in the gym, and we may state here that oft-rereated phrase, "A good time was enjoyed by all."

Things glided along smoothly until the end of the year, when, after a delightful class picnic and some stunning finals, we parted till fall.

PERCEPTION

"Didn't you have a marYelous summer?" "My, you're tanned!" "I surely intend to study hard this fall!" Such exclamations and many others greeted the ears of our returning classmates. Perhar-s the last of the above expressed the perception we girls were beginning to feel in our second year at school-the fact that school was not entirely made up of good times and easy lessons. However, it certain ly was a grand and glorious feeling to be an older pupil and to give directions to the newcomers.

Almost the entire class returned with the exception of dear Hazel Dillman, who passed away during the previous summer.

Hockey! In that, as in everything else, our class took an enthusiastic interest, and we had just finished displaying our sticks when the time arrived for the choice of class rings. Finally, after much consideration, we chose a very stunning ring. You can verify this statement by looking up one of the girls, or whoever is wearing her ring at present.

THE RECORD 1924 Mary Nelms officiated this year, with another Mary-J\Iary Wireman-to back her up, and sweet Mathilda Keller took our money. In the middle of the term, as Mary Nelms left school, Mary Wireman succeeded her in conducting class meetings.

With the "D" boys we formed a literary club, which consisted of various dramatic attempts. The final meeting of the term was a debate, the subject being, "Re8olved, That the franchise for women has benefited the country." Needless to say the girls were victorious. Just before our spring vacation, we presented "Alice in Wonderland," which, so all our parents told us, was a huge success. Who would be fairer judges than they? Miss EYans, who coached the play and who was our room teacher, also liked it, so there you are!

CoNCEPTION

Oh, the thrill of being in the Senior school! And with it came the conception that we were truly growing up. We might have evening parties, and, as one thing in which our class was never lacking was s0ciability, our affairs have always been huge successes.

Marie Pringle presided this year, and again Mary Wireman proved an able assistant; Emilie Moore was elected treasurer. Again we had the literary club, but this year it wasn't so successful. The boys weren't in it; perhaps that was the reason.

According to custom, we gave the annual "C" class play, a Chinese affair. The scenery was most artistic, thanks to Mr. Gorham, and the acting superb- naturally, because of Miss Evans, who was again the power behind the scenes.

The literary talent of our class began to assert itself about this time, and we were mighty proud of Margery Mastbaum, winner of the first prize of the Old Pupils' Association Literary Contest.

Intermingled with joys, such as the above, and sorrows, as the death of one of our dearest classmates, Nancy Moyer, is dear Miss Evans. Miss Evans was our room teacher for two successive years, and it is to her that we owe many of our happiest memories at Friends' Central.

BISECTION

Physics and Cicero, the "B" class divinities! Oh, school was going to be great this term! Though this year we were more definitely than ever before divided, the "B-l's" translating Latin and the "B-2's" experimenting in physics, nevertheless we were still, if not spiritually-spiritedly bound.

As a method of welcoming the new pupils, we had a party in that famous spot -the gym. Our contribution to the entertainment was an indoor track-meet, which was enjoyed as heartily by the spectators as by the participants.

With Mary Wireman as propelling force and Margery Mastbaum as aid, the term passed while our purses were lightened at almost hourly intervals by Mathilda Keller. We chose Virginia Walker as Secretary, and as you know, hers was the task of sending our dance invitations to the faculty.

THE RE'C()RD 1924 Dolls, rattles, ribbons, and similar articles might be seen lying on desks, bookcases, etc. Yes, it was Christmas, and we, with the kind aid of Miss Monroe, our room teacher, were endeavoring to act as young Santa Clauses.

Mid-years we'll just pass over with the thought of our spring dance beckoning.

Never had the gym looked more attractive, nor had the orchestra been jazzier. Indeed, the dance was just what it should be, from the faculty's as well as the students' viewpoint.

Again literary talent f'ame to the foreground when Eleanor Story, Margery 1\Iastbaum and Emilie Moore were elected as officers of the Blue and Gray.

Ours was the pleasant task of ushering at Commencement, and decorating the assembly for Class Day. If there was any credit for what we did, it should have gone to Miss Munroe, for she helped us as kindly in those things as in the many other affairs that occurred during the year. It seemed inconceivable then, that in one short year the "B" class would do the same for us, and even now we are still doubtful that the glorious day has truly come.

DECEPTION

Senior ! Our first public appearance, and we must make it a good one. Truly those first few weeks seemed completely taken up with the importance of our position. vVe soon learned, too, that the famous Senior privileges were all a snare and delusion, and that, as is generally the case, we worked for all we received. Finally, however; we became accustomed to our glory and settled down to the task of arranging our first dance.

By this time you must realize that all our dances were successful, so we won't employ the extravagant adjective.

Another Christmas, and with it were baskets to be flied, but giving had become a good habit now, and we were all extremely interested in Tom and Harry's mittens, and Mary's doll.

Our first pleasant surprise after Christmas was the Clear List, and though we rebelled inwardly, all we could do was have heated debates in English class. However, some things are better left unsaid, and most of the class grew to await with joy and expectation the little white slip that grew longer each week.

Faces-thin, fat, pretty and homely- scattered all about in the form of pictures might be seen. Profiles and full faces were discussed volubly. Yes, the Zamsky Studios were doing our work, and doing it remarkably well, too.

"Kneel to the prettiest, bow to the wittiest, and kiss the one you love the best.''

Truly, we would have been glad to do so, hut just who were prettiest and wittiest?

Speaks well for our class, does it not? Eventually, however, we did decide on the momentous statistics and are all awaiting eagerly the publishing of the Record.

Our dance at the Pennsylvania, was it a success? We'll say it was!

THE RECORD 1924 Elizabeth Houston and Virginia Walker were our executive force, and Margaret Connelly wrote the minutes of the class meetings. Eleanor Story was Treasurer.

"Now, girls," to quote Miss Fussell, "you want some one who will take your money well, if not by fair means or foul, some one who will take it, nevertheless." Eleanor has done well and we're all proud of her.

When we are thinking of helpful persons, Miss Fussell's name immediately comes to our minds for it has been dear Miss Fussell who has mothered us all year and has advised us so wisely and kindly.

Though "all's well that ends well" is perhaps a trifle premature, this phase of our life is ended and with it our history at Friends' Central.

I

HE time approached, the planets were in conjunction; some dread event was pending. The world waited with breathless interest, people talked with bated breath, no sound above a whisper could be heard, business was at a standstill. and everyone was dismayed. The day came and went.

The Class of '24 had entered Friends' Central.

Thus it came about that, on a Tuesday in late September, 1919, we assembled for the first time, a seemingly insignificant group of boys. It is barely possible that we were insignificant. The teachers were disappointed- the stars had lied.

But no, we had hardly been at school a month when, in various manners, we showed signs of precocity, and the teachers heralded us as a great class-the stars had not lied, their infallibility was proved.

During om first two years, we participated in many sports not provided in the curriculum. Nevertheless, we clid some things during this period which are possibly worthy of commendation. But I must draw a kindly curtain over this era.

During our "C" year, our section teacher was the most Honorable W. B. Jackson, the great authority on Latin, French, and above all, slang, as practiced in the A. E. F.; as many a stormy cla sroom scene testifies.

There exist no detailed records of our achievements during this period of our education, owing to the temporary disconti~uance of Class Notes in the BLuE AND GRAY. But even my faulty memory retains the happy impression that we, at this time, emerged from the chaotic conglomeration of small boys (which was our previous condition) into the dignified unity of a class. It was during this phase of our education that we first became a factor in the athletic activities of the school, but the narration of this is a history in itself.

Last year, while we were in Class "B," was, on the whole, a most successful one probably because, at this time, we were sufficiently acquainted with the school to feel at home, and although in a less elevated state than in the Senior year, we were not worried by the incubus of fears which accompanies the approach of graduation.

THE RECORD 1924 able one, Mr. Briggs. At this point, I think I will give a few reasons why I, and I think the rest of the class, prefer section rooms. In the first place, it gives you a definite room, which may be said to belong to your class, where you can study in comparative peace. It also affords the opportunity of coming into more intimate contact with your teachers which is, I believe, most desirable. Moreover, I do not believe that placing all the classes in one room greatly increases your knowledge of the lower classmen; for, that it does is the argument of those who support the present method.

However, this is a class history, and much as l may like to argue on the subject, I must return to less interesting facts.

Our officers for this year were: President, John Cooper (whose absence we much regret), and Treasurer, Robert Bacon, who has held this position from time immemorial, presumably because, if his integrity were not axiomatic, he would be somewhat easy to overcome, should he emulate the example of many bank cashiers in embezzling the funds.

In February of this term came the time to change the BLUE AND GRAY Staff. \Ve were ably represented-only two positions were held by other than members of our class, and these positions were not open to us. During our term of office, the BLUE AND GRAY was most successful, and we achieved much. Notable among the especial improvements were the enlargement of the magazine and the quality of the editorials and departments.

That spring (1923), while the Yearly Meeting was in progress, although deprived of our usual nine days' holiday, we were offered an opportunity which afforded sufficient compensation for our loss of holidays-the first annual hike. This hike was taken by a relatively large number of our class, and I believe, the memory of it will remain pleasant and fresh until this year's hike replaces it with fresher and even more pleasant memories. ·w henever I think of our Junior year, I .seem to see an oft-repeated scene which I feel I must describe, if only, as it were, to relieve my mind and impart the picture to you. It is, perhaps, four o'clock; Mr. Briggs is sitting tipped back in his chair, surrounded by his "disciples," and supporting himself with a hand on the chalk trough and his head against the glistening, well-polished blackboard. There has been a lull in the conversation and he is now humming his favorite song, "La Paloma," rhythmically swinging his well-known yellow pencil. Outside, it is growing dark, lights are being lit and the sound of rivetters, working on the neighboring building, rises fitfully above the hum of the traffic on the darkening street below.

After the fortunate intervention of vacation, we returned to school, our sorrow at the thought of the work ahead of us mitigated by the pleasure of meeting old friends. Our officers this year are Phillips Stanton, President; Alexander Skilton, Page Forty-seven

THE RECORD 1924 Vice-President, and Robert Bacon, Treasurer. Moreover, we continued our monopoly in outside activities by capturing all offices in the Athletic Association.

Beyond this, I can say no more (for who can tell what the future holds in store?), and much as I would like to, I cannot describe our athletic achievements, for this concerns purely academic endeavors and accomplishments. However, I am sure that as long as we are at Friends' Central we will continue to store up happy memories.

All but two of our class, I believe, have come to the school from the several Friends' Elementary Schools, which, I think, goes to prove the steadiness and loyalty of our members. Moreover, all of our class have, at one time or another, participated in some extra-curricular endeavor, so that I feel I may say, with justifiable pride, that we are one of the best classes ever graduated from Friends' Central.

EPILOGUE

Five years have passed, the phenomenon of 1919 is long since forgotten, business has resumed its accustomed course, people no longer look furtively about them, nor speak in scarcely audible whispers, but a great event has come to pass: the Class of '24 has, with many regrets, left Friends' Central School.

Naturally, when you stop to consider that our class had these three qualifications, it is hardly to be wondered that we made such a brilliant record for ourselns in the line of athletics. The whole effect was quite picturesque, as we were gaily decked in orange headbands and ribbons, our class colors.

End-ball, to rival basketball in the Senior school, was played by the "D's" and "E's." We challenged the "D's" and lost by a few points, as was quite proper.

Along with Class "D," came hockey. We all ran around wildly, getting sticks and discussing the best makes. ''Ve had a big showing out for practice. EYerybody was right there when it came to pep.

Our basketball team was composed of Duffield, Uff, Nelms, ''Vireman and Eyer. "Ve bowed to the "B's" after a well-fought game, with a big score, 42- 12.

Emelie Moore, our star baseball pitcher, led our team.

Our most thrilling game was played with the Seniors.

Imagine! We tied them and thought we were about the best things on earth! Mter a good deal of persuasion on the part of the "A's,' we played off the tie, losing unfortunately.

Mary Wireman acted as Secretary of the Athletic Association, and K. Bauer, as representative in "C." 'Ve defeated the "D's" in a bard-fought hockey game and lost to the "B's."

Much to our delight, a varsity basketball team was begun. Three of our girls were lucky enough to make second team: Olsen, Pringle, and Lukens.

l'HE RECORD 1924 The following year, we had a varsity hockey team. A large number of us made it: Eyer, Moore, Quimby, Olsen, Mahood, Wireman, Pringle, Connelly and Lukens.

Oh, shall we ever forget that Moorestown game? I'll say we won't! "Ve traveled over there, loaded down with baggage, on a dinky, little, rickety car for hours, it seemed. "Ve were "all in" by the time we got there, and then we had to play on a muddy old field.

Betty Eyer put up a plucky fight in the Alumnae game, while Quimby scored our only point, bringing us a victory. Wireman, our class captain, led her .team. to victory. 'Ve won the cup as hockey champions.

Eleanor Story, peppy little side-center, was chosen Captain of the second basketball team.. Olsen and Quimby played with her quintet while Lukens played with the first. Quimby later made fi.rst.

Along with all the other nice things of spring, came the Gym Contest. Johnnie Houston was our able Captain. Others on the team were Quimby, Olsen, Moore, Eyer, Wireman, Pringle, Dirickx, Eberhard and Lukens. We surely had hard luck, losing by only two points to those little "E's." But Betty, Olsen and Quimby held up our "rep" by tying with Peggy Olsen for best athlete in the school. Hurrah for us!

Betty won the cup after the tie was worked off.

We played tennis at the Idle Hour Club. Quimby, Olsen, Moore, Pringle and Wireman made the team.

We were dignifi.ed Seniors now! Marie Pringle had the honor of being elected Varsity Hockey Captain. Sadly, but truly, however, she couldn't play. Moore took her place and filled it very well. Lukens was elected Manager. All games were played at home, and we had a dandy season. This was partly due to our new uniforms We looked great in them. They were gray flannel, kilted skirts, knee length. Then we wore gray stockings too.

Mary Wireman was again made Class Captain. 'Ve won the cup for the second successive year. May our sister classes follow in our footsteps!

Off with the old, on with the new. Basketball had begun. Lukens was made Captain. Story also played on the first team while Horter. Moore, Eyer, Quimby, Olsen and Pringle made the second.

Our only class game was lost to the "B's." Ruth Bitterlich was Captain. We were there with cheers and yelling, if at no other game. Even the referee's whistle couldn't be heard above our voices. Ask Mrs. Bishop about it.

THE RECORD 1924 Thus ends our athletic career at old F. C. and we want to thank l\tlrs. Bishop and our former coaches who have helped us during the years which we have spent here. We feel that they have not only developed our athletics materially, but have helped us to learn to accept defeat as well as victory in a sportsmanlike way!

1Jjops' ~tbletic ~istorp HE fall of our Freshman year began with a bang. Our indoor baseball team played the Class of '25 and ran rough-shod over them. The final score, 41- 13, indicates the lopsidedne s of the contest. However, there were no hard feelings, for it was all part of a sociable, and ice-cream and cakes were served aftenyard (and, we must say, AI ·w hite sure was champion at the co"·boy stuff). The boxing team, after several attempts to get a match, had to fight each other to keep in shape. However, the big event of the year was the football game played with Class "E." Of course. we won, but much excitement prevailed. Again, White illustrated his ability by several times diving for the ball.

Two new men shone out in Stanton and Wilkinson. ·wilkie, a stocky. little, pigeon-toed Englishman, was some line plunger and was to become famous in his later years. Phil Stanton, the wily and astute President of our class, also showed his ability. Before November was gone, a terrible eruption took place when Captains for basketball, track, and indoor baseball were elected. Stanton was chosen for the class basketball team, Wilkinson again for track, and Lou Richter for baseball. While it is not to the point, our rings and pins arrived and we noticed that some immediately disappeared. My! They start young now-a-days.

'Ve must say, at this time, that two star athletes and one assistant wrecker departed from this class forever, to our sad dismay. AI White felt he must give up his studies, and Miss Brubaker felt that Vic and Anck should give up theirs. We hated to lose them, for they were the best of pals. How many explosions Vic was responsible for in science will, perhaps, never be known.

One more event of importance was the close basketball game we played with the Senior class. The final score was 20- 17, in favor of our elders, but they were mighty lucky to defeat our young athletes. Our class was beginning to gain fame and was to blossom out in the future. Phil and Eddy played a remarkable game, but once, when Eddy gazed at Mary for a moment, he was spilled and sprained his arm. You would! " rolf, Sullivan, and Skilton were the other members of the team.

In the spring of 1921, several of our noble athletes played on the tennis team; among them, R. Comly Bacon, generally known as Robert. Another was Paul James.

TJIE RRCuRD 1924 Wilkinson "\\ ho also played a nasty game. Stanton was the only member of our class playing regularly on the baseball team. Laurie Heilprin, one of the really bright students (there were two in our class at this time), spent his idle afternoons on the tennis court. Richter ventured once in a while. However, with approaching examinations, and terrible thoughts of how we would pass, the last few weeks of school were utilized for that foreign matter called "Study." We departed from school, some hastily, some gladly, and the majority of us anxious to be present at the opening term of school again.

SOPHOMORE YEAR

Entering our Sophomore year, we found football in full sway and many of our boys candidates. Stanton and Wilkinson started every game throughout the season.

Nickles, Cooper, the "Conshy Terror," James, Alex Skilton and Richter composed the remainder of the squad from '24. Phil, Ed and Ted received their letters in Assembly. A remarkable event occurred when our class and Mr. Jackson, our erstwhile French tea<'her, gave twenty dollars for Christmas dinners to the poor. It shows how liberal we were, but try to borrow a quarter now. The dear, innocent "E" girls gave a play called, "Lost on Christmas Eve," and Eddy still thinks it was Santa, because he never gets a stocking full anymore!

Basketball soon attracted attention. The same squad of fellows that reported for foolball decided to go out for the basketball team. Wilkinson and Stanton were the only two to get their lette~s, but the rest of us "ordinaries" worked hard and had promise of making the team in another year. The basketball season was fairly successful and the best we could do was to look forward to the next seawn when our boys might shine a little brighter.

The annual Boys' Gym Exhibition came off in the usual spectacular manner. ·w ilkinson won the first prize, an honest-to-goodness gold medal.

And then the glorious spring when one can do little and get by if he's clever.

But with a splendid faculty, such as Friends' Central always possesses, this is almost an impossibility, so we turn our thoughts to baseball. Stanton, a letter man from his previous year, Wilkie, and Lou Richter were the most likely candidates for the team. Wilkie and Phil became regulars and Lou broke into the line-up near the end of the season in Doc Thomas' place in left field . Doc either fell in love, or in an iron works in "Conshy," for he neYer seemed to be in school on Fridays when he was Page F1jty-seven

THF RECORD 1924 needed to play ball. At an election, Phil was elected Captain of the F. C. baseball bullies for the following year.

The more poetical students of our class turned their lighter thoughts to tennis, and one thing I'll always remember was chasing balls that James, the Lesser, knocked into the baseball field. But that was Paul's peculiar stroke. Paul still holds the honor of being the only man to drive one clear across "Hancock's Coal is Best" coal yard. And now another year comes to a close. How time flies!

J GNIOR YEAR Here we were, Junior·s! And yet hardly aware of the fact. TIME was flying.

The football team representing Friends' Central contained six and sometimes seven members of our class playing regularly, and in the final game of the season eight of them played throughout the entire game. Stanton and Wilkinson played well in every game. The Big Game, however, came at the end of the season when we played Class "C" for tl1e championship of the school. The final score, Q7- 1Q, indicates the thrashing we gave to the lowly Sophs. The team lined up with Skilton and Nickles, ends; Simmons and Heilprin, tackles; Darlington and A. Howland, guards; Cooper, center, and James, Richter, Wilkinson and Stanton in the backfield, Stanton calling signals. Maloney, as a sub, played a prominent part in stopping Repp, the 186-pound halfback of the Sophs. Nickles scored two touchdowns, and Richter and Stanton one each. Stanton made good on three of four attempts at the extra point.

The basketball season breezed b;v us rapidly. Stanton and Wilkinson played in every game throughout the season. The biggest victory old F. C. S. has scored in recent years was the win obtained over Wilmington Friends. The Friends' League, however, had broken up and we never played Wilmington again to determine the championhip for that year.

After much dissipation on March 23d when the Seniors were entertained at a dance and free lunch, the groggy athletes went out for baseball.

Stanton, our Captain, was the main-stay. Great prospects \vere held forth for the .final year, however, as Hallowell was the only player to graduate. The annual Blue and Gray game ended in a terrible slaughter for the Blues, as the score read: Grays.

THE RECORD 1924 On May 29th, several announcements were made from the Assembly platform.

Phillips Stanton was to captain the 1923 football team. C. Edward Wilkinson was elected the Captain of the '23-'24 basketball team, and Louis Richter, Captain of the 1924 baseball team. Ed also was presented with the Alumni Baseball Cup, and the Harry Edward Powell (best all-'round athlete) Cup. Phil received a gold baseball, having received his letter in that sport for three, successive years. We vrent from our school with our heads bent low, remembering that the next was to be our last year. Say! We were old.

SENIOR YF...AR

Ah! The Senior ~ear has come, and how we have changed since we first came into the Freshman class! But time and tide wait for no man, so we shall proceed.

When I look back, I see that, while not all was accomplished that might have been, yet some great events took place that will keep the year, 1923- 1924, in the memories of our fellow classmen and others for years to come. Episcopal Academy, that peaceful institution in Overbrook, was finally defeated in football. The second great event occurred when Penn Charter was defeated at basketball, our quintet scoring a decisive 18- 14 victory. The old, last-minute punch put the game on ice, so to speak, and thereafter P. C. was not so hot. But, to relate a little more of the victory over Episcopal: It was the opening game, and a crowd larger than ever before from F. C. S. thronged the Parkside field. The war waged back and forth with neither side scoring, although the ball was in Episcopal's territory for the greater part of the first half.

Once again, these two fighting elevens fought for the pigskin in the second and final half. Toward the close of the third period, F. C. worked the ball closer and closer to Episcopal's goal and, finally. one of our men fell on it for the deciding touchdown.

The F. C. S. rooters went wild, for it was the first time Episcopal had been defeated in many a year. Wilkinson played the game of his life. His boots alone kept the enemy far back in their territory. The team, as a whole, played a bang-up game, and eight of them were Seniors.

After the wild excitement of this victory, we once again lo:>ked into a chem book and quieted down. However, the faculty seemed mighty pleased over the victory and the breaking of the Episcopal jinx. We were very glad that we pleased them once at least, in our endurance test at F. C. S. But, how everybody had aged! P. Maloney, seldom quiet, had adopted the kind of pants Perry's advertise; Bacon sure had changed his dance, and Phil- why, he even wore blue shirts into school. but, of course, we all know there's a story behind that. And Eddy! He fell in love with cats- or something, for I always hear him referring to "Kitty-kitty." But soon the basketball season flies by. Stanton, in the Friends' Select game, ran wild and caged twenty field goals, setting a city record that will p ~ obably stand for some time. The final score, 7o-16, indicates the supremacy of Friends' Central. On the Varsity Basketball Team were Captain Wilkinson and Jan'!.es, guards; Ted Nickles, center; Stanton and Marple, Page Si.rty

THE RECORD 1924 a Sophomore, forwards. Richter sometimes broke into Phil's place, although at the beginning of the season paired off with him as forward. Andy Andrews, our new member, also played center, so that the Yarsity team was composed practically of Seniors. Laffetty, the President of Logan, played a nasty game in the second team, and was its mainstay. A call for baseball candidates was sent out by Lou Richter early in March and the prospects for a good team seemed excellent.

The candle is slowly burning away, and soon comes the end of all things when the diploma are handed out to the fortunate ones. Little thought is given then to the boy who has spent his spare time trying for a team that he knew he couldn't make, but for which he had the spirit to go out, and at least help his more fortunate mate to gain the praise that is just as much his. This same boy might have been selfish, and studied while others labored, and received good marks during his course.

But, after all, school is just a training for greater things, and it's the virile, red-blooded,. all-'round American boy who succeeds in life and not the school-room sap who thinks a football coach has wheels.

~irl~' ~ropbecp WAS sitting alone in my drawing-room on a cold rainy day in the fall of 1934. I could hear the children playing happily in the nursery, and outside of the occasional honk of an automobile, there was nothing to disturb my thoughts as my memory traveled bark OYer ten years to dear old Friends' Central Sc-:1ool. Many pleasant recollections were recalled, and suddenly I felt a great desire to see my old classmates and find out how they were coming along in life. Acting upon the impulse I reached o\·er to the radio-scope and started in to experiment. I turned around each disk trying to locate a familiar place where I could find some one I knew.

One of the first pictures that appeared before me was that of a crowded theater.

The curtain was just falling on the last art and I caught a glimpse of the heroine of the tragedy who had lo t her life in a good cause. The audience was applauding tremendously and demanding that the star respond to a curtain call. When she appeared I was amazed to see that it was our own Grace Quimby who had climbed the ladder to fame and was now the foremost American actress. I wanted to stretch out my hand and greet her but the picture suddenly changed and I found myself in a foreign land with thousands of sa\·ages rushing around toward an open space where some one was about to commence what seemed like a religious service. I took another look and there stood Betty Eyer, her Bible in hand, reading in a foreign language her messa12·e to these strange people. But I could not remain with her very long as the scene hifted back to the Metropolitan Opera House in Philadelphia. Grand Opera at its best was being sung and I was anxious to find out who the prima donna was who was securing so much attention and applause. My heart filled with joy when I saw it was Story, who certainly had obtained her "fill" of life.

Slowly the picture faded away, and in its place I saw an institution out in the country. Men of all at;es seemed to be resting in the shade of the trees or sitting in groups on the porch. They appeared to be dissatisfied with life and the only way in which they could be consoled was when a tall, nice-looking woman moved around and about them. She spoke words of cheer and encouragement to these men, who I soon found, were broken-hearted bachelors, and the angel of consolation was none other than our old classmate, Marie Pringle. But I could not determine just how successful she had become at this work, for I was carried on to Harrisburg where I found myself in the state c:::.pitol. The governor was giving a reception and his wife, who was receiving with him, I recognized as l\farjorie Horter.

This gave me a new idea, I wanted to see who was keeping order in the classroom back at the old school, so I endeavored to reach the Assembly at Friends' Central.

At last I succeeded and lo and behold. I saw a young woman with a stern and sober face, calling the student to order. I squinted my eyes to take a closer look and there Page Sixty-three

THE RECORD 192.J stood Lue Mahood. As I gazed suddenly the picture was blurred by several airplanes dashing across the view. I tried to follow them and see who were the daring operators of these flying machines which soared higher and higher into the sky and then dropped like shooting stars. Finally, they made a landing, and instead of the men that I was looking for, I saw two charming young women step out. They were Margaret Connelly and Julie Chapman. who were maintaining their old record of keeping at the top of the dass by now trying to keep at the top of the world. But I could not stay long with them and so I came back to town and I noticed a little handkerchief shop. The windows 'vere filled with all kinds of beautiful lace-work and other dainties for madame, and I tried to find out 'vho owned the place. I noticed familiar faces as the customers went in and came out and among them I saw Miss Eisenhower, one of our F. C. S. instructors, leaving \vith a purchase. I finally saw the name and the owner of the place was our friend Matilda Keller.

I turned the lens down Chestnut Street and the first thing I saw was Childs' Restaurant. I looked for the man who generally flips the hot cakes in the window, but instead there stood Edna May herself, showing them how to do it "by one who knows."

Then a sign caught my eye further down the street. It read" Krauss' Drug Store," and sure enough. behind the counter, I saw our own Clara making up a prescription.

Looking up to the floor above I noticed what looked like the studio of some wellknown artist. A model draped in green was posing for a picture. I gazed onr the artist's shoulder and saw it was his great masterpiece, "Yen us at the Pump," and then lifting my eyes toward the model I looked straight into the face of "Jinks" Walker.

Of course, seeing her there made me wish to see Dot Linton, her constant companion of school days, and so I turned the lens again down along Chestnut Street to the neighborhood where 'Vhitman's Store once stood, and I read a new sign across the outside with the inscription: "Linton's Light Lunch." The place was filled, and I had some difficulty in finding Dotty, but I at last located her back in the office reading "Treasure Island" by one of her fayorite authors. I wanted to speak to her when suddenly the entire picture seemed upset and disturbed. l\-Ien were rushing everywhere and I noticed that they wore uniforms. I was suddenly impressed that I was upon a battlefield, and somewhere a war was in progress before my very eyes.

The sight sickened me and I was downhearted. All at once I followed some of the soldiers across to a hospital and up into the great Receiving Ward. As soon as the wounded entered the doors here you could see a smile upon their fares and their whole appearance changed as the head nurse approached each one to administer to his needs. This messenger of joy and mercy was none other than our friend Johnnie Houston, who seemed to be adored by everyone with whom she came in touch.

But the picture soon faded away and I viewed the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. In the center was a crowd of people in evening clothes. and in the midst of the group of admiring young men was the belle of the evening who proved to be Dorothy Reed, Page Sixty~four

THE RECORD 1924 a popular deb of years ago, still rushed as much as ever. I wanted to join in the crowd and tell her how happy I was to see her still such a society idol but I was soon taken away off to Rome. A reigning sovereign sat upon his throne trying his best to please the artist, who was painting his picture, and who turned out to be Mary Wireman. Surely she had risen to fame and glory! I could not stay with her longer as the picture disappeared and I saw the main aisle of the great Post Office Building at 'Vashington. I noticed a conference g-oing on between two young women, one of whom seemed to be employed in the department. I leaned over and found it was Emma Duling, who was telling her friend that she worked there so that she would always be near the mails. I turned to look at her friend and discovered it was Frances Marvel, inventor of the popular-"Marvel Vacuum Cleaner," who had stopred in on her way to the Patent Office with papers in her hand for some new invention.

All at once I heard a noise, and I saw men and women in athletic uniforms taking part in all sorts of contests. They were in London and the Olympic Games were at their height. On the baseball field two teams of women were contesting, and looking behind the bat I recognized Marguerite Lukens who was umpire of the game, and whose blouse was decorated with school and college letters which she had won in her student days. I passed on over to the hockey field as a man with a megaphone announced that the Americans were about to contest " ·ith the English in the finals.

I was an interested spectator at the game for a while and with joy I saw the American team with Captain Betty Olsen in the lead winning the championship of the world.

I had spent several pleasant hours, but still I had not found all of the girls. Another turn of the disk and I entered a cozy little room. A woman sat writing before a crowded table. She worked with fervor. I took a peep at her desk, and there lay a check for $500.00 which she had just received for a story recently published. I thought of Rita Weinman. the great playwright and story writer, who had been a classmate of my mother at Friends' Central School, and thought that perhaps I had wandered into her studio, but as the woman dropped a copy sheet from her desk, and placed it back in position, I caugM a glimpse of her face and noticed Adeline Dick, our classmate, who had now achieved a high position as a writer and editor.

Another hospital appeared upon the background, with internes running in every direction, seeking for the chief resident physician for advice. I discovered I was in the Women's College of Physicians and the head doctor was our old friend, Edith Haines, whose biology and chemistry had come to good use after all.

I next was ushered into a crowded court room. The judge and the jury were listening very closely to the argument of a vigorous young woman who was pleading the case of a young girl on trial for her life. She was talking fast and furiously and I noticed that she made a great impression upon her liF.teners. I watched spellbound and when the young orator gave me a side glance at her face I saw that it was Helen Dirickx, who had been our prize talker at school and whose great abliity was now being used to save her client's life.

THE RECORD 1924 Another change and I was away up in a room at the top of the Bulletin Building.

I noticed copies of the evenir.g paper all around on a table. The staff sat working their fingers to the core and among them I recognized Gladys Ginsburg, who sat comfortably with her feet propped up, sipping a cup of tea. From the way everyone came up to her I knew that she must be one of the editors. Beside her sat her secretary taking dictr.tion. I strained my eyes to make out the article, but could only read the heading. It was "Why Girls Leave Home." Why do they? I'll bite.

A limousine rushed into the picture. I was again amidst strange scenery. I finally located m;}self in London and saw seated upon the rear seat of the automobile Ruth Bitterlich, who was one of England's richest women and she was bowing to all the bobbies as she passed. She had hardly changed a bit from the old school days, except to add grace with years.

Then I noticed a popular Modiste Shop. Fashionable women were going in and coming out in crowds. I looked for the name. Much to my surprise I saw upon the coor "Hortense Newmeyer." I listened to the conversation of the customers and found. out that it had a reputation equalled only by Paquin, Poiret and Worth. Our modest Hortense had surely made her mark in the world.

A Grand Opera House loomed into view. A great artist was seated at the piano.

I looked closer and saw Dot Koelle. She was playing to a great audience. Everyone sat entranced and I noticed that she cast a great spell over her admirers by her wonderful work. She was rlaying one of her own compositions, and as she finished I heard the tremencous applause that greeted her effort. As she retired behind the scenes the orchestra struck up a tune and the stage director came to the front and announced "PaYlowa the Second." I waited to see who this great dancer could be and as she perfmmed her beautiful steps I realized how popular an idol she was of the multitude before her and I joined in their admiration which became all the greater when I recol'ni;r,ed that it was Phoebe Eberhard.

I turned the wlu:els of my instrumeut once more anxious to get back to dear old Philadelphia. I tried to look for Billy Penn and turned the focus to Broad and Market Streets, but the old familiar tower and City Hall itself had disappeared and in their place I saw many new buildings and among them I discm·ered one that looked like a moYing-picture theater. Over the doorway I discoYered its name. In b1illiant lights across the front I read "The Peg." At that moment some one approached the attendant at the door and inquired why it had secured such an uncommon name and I could hear him reply, "It was named after Miss Marjory Mastbaum who was knovvn to her frio~C:s as 'Feggy."'

Following the crowd my view seemed to chan!l·e very quickly and I was in the poorer Eection of the city with a woman carrying a basket. A crowd of children greeted her jo;}fully as she distributed parcels to them from time to time. She seemed to be very popular doing this social service work, and as she turned to some little kiddie to pat him on the head I recognized Martha Buckaloo.

TilE RECORD 1924 I next caught ano:her v1ew of Chestnut Street, and again started down that popular thoroughfare as in the old school days. A fashionably dressed woman entered a Beauty Parlor, and 1 did likewise. Seated about were society matrons and maids preparing for some great event scheduled for that night. With a graceful smile directing the establishment I saw Gertrude Freeman who undoubtedly had made a considerable fortune in this most profitable business.

I went on back to Broad and Market again and entered "The Peg" as I had been attracted by the announcement on the billboard that Emilie Moore was the feature, and so I went on in and waited for the main show, and sure enough it was our old schoolmate who was now '"Quite the Gal" in the movies. She was taking the part of the vamp and she was rigged out in such style that no male could withstand her charms.

Suddenly there was a great crackling sound and then the pictures slowly faded away. Try as I might I could not ecure a vision any further. My battery was completely gone and I decided that I was through for the day. As dinner was announced I gaily joined the rest of the family to tell them of all the pleasure I had enjoyed that afternoon in again meeting my old classmates of Friends' Central School.

T WAS on the morning of June 10, 1950, that I took my seat in the nonstop Aero Express from Philadelphia to Chicago. As a representative of the Reno Corporation, I was going out to close a deal with the Chicago Scrubbing Brush Co. I was glancing carelessly at the morning paper when a man with a large package came in and sat down beside me. I looked up and had no difficulty in recognizing an old classmate, Nickles, whom I had not seen since Commencement Day, twenty-six years ago. He knew me in a minute, and after our first salutations, I said: "Where did you drop from? Are you still living in Philadelphia?"

"No, I'm a Chicago realtor now. I've just been East to see Darlington-you remember Darlington of old F. C., a queer-looking fellow- well, I've been to see him about buying some valuable mushroom lands in Illinois. I have a box of his 'MoonKist Mushrooms' here."

I looked at the package under his arm and saw the famous Darlington slogan, "Don't forget the folks at home" on it.

"He has four or five stores in the city now, hasn't he?" I asked.

"Yes, and some in New York and Chicago, too. I wonder what has happened to all the other fellows in the class?" ""Veil, of course, you know the famous civil engineer, Anderson?" 1 queried.

"Oh, yes; that's right! He built the big mooring tower at the North Pole for dirigibles making Polar flights. They say he made a fortune out of the thing-charged five cents a day for airships mooring there."

"Yes, I guess he did," I said. "Then, there's Bacon. He is a professor at Antioch."

"You're not kidding me! What does he teach?"

"Sanscrit, I think," I went on. "Also, Laurie Heilprin runs a chain of two cigar stores in Philadelphia and does a thriving business.

"Richter, I suppose you know. He is the well-known tragedian. He was in Philadelphia, not long ago, playing in his popular piece: 'The Revenge of John Grakelow.'

"Simmons has gone high in finance. He is now the 49th Vice-President of the Divers' and Mendicants' National Bank, having been advanced from 50th VicePresident not long ago. I have had occasion to do quite a little business with his firm.

"Skilton, you have probably heard of, too. He is a color artist and is now President of 'Life.'

"And the last fellow I know anything about is Lafferty. He is now Police Lieutenant. Why, only the other day, he was going to pinch me for violating parking regulations, but he let me go on account of old times.''

He has just discovered the tomb of an ancient Egyptian king and has announced that he is going to donate all his discoveries to the new West Chester High School Museum.

"Maloney has just established a seminary for girls near Philadelphia and is at present acting as Principal. He intends giving a rigorous course in etiquette.

"Sheaff is a phrenologist. He was employed for a long time by some big firm to select their employees on account of his skilful character reading. But, recently, he has retired from this more gainful calling to do some research work, the object of which is to find out whether the muscles that wiggle the ears have any connection with the intellectual sector of the brain.

"Stanton is now an author.. He specializes in short stories of the race track. e also keeps a large stable.

"Finally, Wilkinson is the football coach at Ursinus College. Every year since he has been coaching the team, they have beaten an eleven made up of the Faculty.

This is, as you know, an unusual record, for Ursinus."

"But, what about Andrews?" I asked. "Don't you know anything about him?"

"Nope. I haven't heard a word about him in years," said Nickles. "He may be dead, for all I know."

Not long after, we reached Chicago, and getting out of the machine, we started toward the edge of the flying field. What was our surprise when, rounding the wing of the plane, we came face to face with Andrews himself. He turned out to be one of the pilots on the Coast to Coast Aero Line.

We, the Class of '2-1, of Friends' Central School, being of sound and dispo ing mind and body, do make this, our last will and testament.

First-We give and bequeath to our beloved Principal our sincerest thanks and best wishes for helping us during these past years spent in this school.

Second- We give and bequeath to the august faculty the amazing knowledge and startling information with which we have furnished them in recitations and tests.

Th?"rd- \Ve give and bequeath to the Junior class: 1. Our brains, ambitions and Senior privileges, and may you have more success than we had in finding them.

2. Our sacred places in Assembly, and may you be more prompt in occupying them and not keep Mr. Thomas waiting.

3. The boys' custom of wearing green neckties and angel collars on St. Patrick's Day, and may you look just as handsome as they did.

4. That Yery fine mirror in the Senior girls' dressing-room that you seem so anxious to make use of.

Fourth-\Ve gi,-e and bequeath to the Sophomores our noisiness and untidiness in the lunch-room.

((lass ~oem At last, we reach the visioned goal of youth And, after climbing up by rugged paths, \Ve turn victorious eyes upon the past, Just as an artist oft' surveys the work Of many days; just as the soldier comes Again to view the battlefield whereon He charged to victory for his nation's flag.

We feel a certain sense of pride, and still Again, we find that freedom sweet which breaks The bonds of books and study. It may be A part of human nature to relax, Supported by our past achievement's strength.

But hold! 'Tis only for a moment's length That we delay in meditative dreams.

We stand upon a hill, but there a trail, l\1ore rugged, dangerous than the first, ascends The mountain's steep incline. The human eye Can only see the base, although it knows That, high above the veiling cloud, the peak Commands a view which man has never known.

March on! Before life ends, our noble ranks Will test their ~trength in many frays, their swords Will flash in conquest over worldly wrongs; But, when the final victory's won, we ask A favor, let our trusty arms receive A resting place within Friends' Central's halls, The sacred source from which we borrowed them.

LASS Day and Graduation, the two big days that have been the goal of all our five years' striving, are at hand.

But now that our aim is accomplished, our contentment is not unmixed with a

feeling of regret.

We rejoice that at last we

have reached the climax of school life and that tomorrow we are to receive our reward.

But,

though we are all happy and proud of being graduates, yet there is a certain sadness connected with the occasion.

It is the closing of school

days, the parting of friends.

We go out resolved to live up to the best that is in us, and with that in mind, we shall surely be victors in life.
