really come, and now is our opportunity to share our enjoyment with others.

To-morrow our joy will be changed to regret at leaving Friends' Central never to return as a class.

But let us forget this for the present, and live

up to the meaning of Class Day. a Class D ay?"

Perhaps some of you may ask, "What is

It is the day toward which we have been striving since we en-

tered Class E, and on which we shall let you look back upon our happy record at Friends' Central, point out the peculiar and interesting characteristics of our present, and reveal the destiny of Nineteen Ten.

We have worked hard to

make this day a success, and we hope that you may enjoy it because of what it means to us.

We have accomplished the task of reaching graduation, and, although the path has seemed rough and at times difficult, the goal has at last been reached, and now we are ready to take upon us the responsibilities that the busy world will bring us.

We wish to tha nk our teachers for their help and encouragement in making this great day of our school life possible.

We are most grateful to them and

to those members of the class who have so generously contributed to advance our class on its illustrious career.

But those who follow me will tell you all about these wonderful events, and I sincerely hope that the spirit of Class Day may be shared by all.

Again I extend to you all a most cordial welcome.

<15irl6'' ~fGtorp Once upon a time, five years ago to be exact, the Class of 191 0 was a child, a dear little, timid, wondering child. Here we might pause for a comparison of the bud with the blossom-a pretty thought indeed, but unnecessary- so let us proceed.

We left the intermediate schools feeling old and important. We entered the mighty High School building feeling less so, and by the time we entered the presence of Mrs. Speakman, also mighty, we did not feel that way at all. Indeed, no! We were too much awed even to resent being called "little girls." It took us some time to discover that we really were "little girls." At first the building seemed very large and complex to us, as I dare say it does to every Class E . We lost our way several times a day, but we were always treated with the indulgence befitting our tender years and unsophisticated condition. In ignorance of the law, which was then a perfectly good excuse, we broke rules and committed frequent misdemeanors. Actually, we used to want to run in the large room and, horrible dictu, to sharpen pencils in Mrs. Stirling's "parlor. " This "parlor" was an awful place that year, for we were taking Latin "into our consciousness." The process was very painful, and was attended by tears and hours after school. But we survived, and live to tell the tale, the glorious tale.

We studied zoology, too, which is a very interesting, but fearful , study.

We purchased aprons and dissecting instruments and went earnestly to work to penetrate into the mysteries of squids and fishes, and frogs' eggs. The Natural History Field Club was enthusiastically taken up under the care of Mrs. Dutton.

It was the first real club we had ever belonged to, and everybody was in it ; and we had pins, which was the pleasantest part of all. I think some of our happiest school memories are connected with Mrs. Dutton and the Field Club.

Also, we became acquainted with the boys of the class in the joint meetings of the club. It was a rather timid and imperfect acquaintance, but I think our interest in the other sex ( a natural and well-controlled interest) may be said to date from that time. Our impressions of each other in E were not deep, but I recall hearing Gert, and also wondering at her beautiful hair. And Margaret Phillips, who has departed this school, made the most charming paper dolls. Yes, in a loud tone of voice, paper dolls, for we played with them openly in E. Also we noticed in Edith Williams a remarkable intelligence.

We still notice it.

The next year we sat in the large room and observed the ways of the older girls. We found that in D it was customary to elect class officers, which we proceeded to do with great pride. Faith Sanford was elected president; Mildred Twining, vice-president, and Annie Greer, treasurer. All of these girls left before the junior year. It was the duty of the president and vice-president to manage the class- that was plain enough. But what were the treasurer's duties? We decided to collect class dues, five cents a month. What for we did not know, but the treasurer must have something to do. We also learned that it was not u ual to get class pins till the next year.

"We will be unusual, we will be independent," said we, and we set about getting our class pins. The girls decided upon a pin and the boys decided upon a pin, but it was not the same one. Fortunately, there were more girls than boys and so the girls' choice prevailed. But the boys were annoyed at such an outcome ( man would ever be the ruler, even of woman), and it was rumored that they had refused to get the pins. This was never proved, however.

Miss Fetzer came that year, and we began our basket-ball career, with Annie Greer as captain of the team. It was not an especially glorious career, for we were beaten in every game. But Class D always is, and we held our own pretty well.

The study of physiology also interested us greatly. It was horrifying to discover how unhygienic most people were, particularly our own families. We became familiar with the school skeleton and "Harriet's Nervous System" and all the germs and microbes that surround human existence.

At Christmas time we turned our thoughts to the poor and needy, as it is very proper that we should. Miss Fussell distributed dolls among us to be dressed for the little children of the Friends' Neighborhood Guild. It was edifying to see how well most of us could sew-we were so young-and dolls' clothes are not easy to make. We did not ask each other whether we had made them all ourselves.

Just before the May holidays we produced the "Tempest" with great success under Mrs. Dutton's management. I remember that there was some discussion about the gentlemen's costumes, the style being a little difficult for a young woman to adopt with dignity. We finally compromised and wore long cloaks.

We had several feasts throughout the year, and always there were not enough sandwiches and too many olives.

And so the D year slipped away, and before we knew it we were in Class C, and separated into Classicals and Scientifics. We were still young and playful, but we were no longer indulged. On the contrary, we were continually reminded of our increased years, and told that we must be an example to the younger classes. I hope none of them really did take us seriously. and try to follow in our footsteps. How the faculty meetings must have discussed 43

us! Especially in Miss Ely's class did the German section distinguish itself.

This lady had the most amiable of dispositions. She never lost her temper or became unpleasant; and as she was good, so were we bad. We were ruled only by our sweet young fancies, and these were inclined to be rather lawless.

Ruth brought her lunch to class and shared it on the back bench. Gert brought a full glass of water upstairs in her jumper, and Kitty Turn er set off an alarm clock. But saddest of all was the way in which Edith Williams proved herself capable of misconduct. She was reported for using in German class a little thing that made a fascinating click when you squeezed it. The faculty was astounded, and so was Edith when the magnitude of her crime was brought before her. Clearly we see that it is not well for a teacher to be too amiable.

She should keep the end of her patience well before the students.

This year "my dearest coz" was the captain of the basket ball team, which position she has held ever since. We beat the D's and were beaten by the higher 'Classes.

Physics, a new and uninteresting subject, was set before us by Ezra K .

Maxfield. We recited, but we never studied it, which is doubtless the reason why so much explanation was necessary to make us feel informed. These explanations often ended in arguments, rather heated arguments, and then Ruth left the room. For Ruth was the one who didn't "see why." The rest of us didn't "see" either, but we had no desire to, and so without question we believed what we were told.

Just before Easter there was a little fire down in the book store. It was very exciting, for Gert's Panama hat, to say nothing of the whole building and all the people in it, were in danger of being burned. But Gert didn't care to take any risks, so she ran and got her hat and threw it out of the window. It was a brand new one, and I dare say the first Panama hat she had ever ownedso you see she was quite justified.

The next year we were juniors, really a very important position from the junior point of view, but a remarkably insignificant one from the seniors' point of view, which is, of course, the more rational.

In B it is time for one to become really acquainted with the boys of the class, and for this purpose we had sociables, an admirable and time-honored custom. Ernestine Meyer, brave young creature, had the first one. All the girls and most of the boys came. But we were like oil and water-we wouldn't mix. Nothing could induce the boys to leave the walls or the girls to leave the piano. Indeed there was strength in union.

We continued our study of the German language this year under Miss Steinberg's instruction. One delightful evening- it was raining and snowing at the same time-we went with her to see "Wilhelm Tell" at the German Theatre. The play was interesting, and those of us who hadn't read the translation beforehand were pathetically cunous to know what was going on.

In basketball we felt at first quite crippled, because our two forwards, Ruth Miller and Mary Ridgeway, did not come back. However, we soon found that we had two others just as marvelous as those whom we had lost, Ruth Rowland and Marion Yerkes, both firm in their opinions, but both excellent basketball players. We conquered every class but the A's, and we did not mind being beaten by them, for we had a proper respect for the seniors, although we didn' t admit it. We have found 1911 sadly lacking in this appropriate and becoming feeling.

We were admitted to the hockey field this year, and we played enthusiastically till the end of the season. For next year's team Anna Reeder was chosen captain, and Ruth Rowland, manager.

Again, at Christmas time we thought of the poor, and took a Christmas dinner to a family recommended by one of the girls. The way was long and the things were heavy, but I am sure we were glad we had done it, when we saw the poor tired mother and the dirty little children with sore eyes.

When Class Day came we were resolved to do our worst, and so well did we succeed that we felt we had made a greater impression than the seniors. But we know now that this was only the egotism of youth. The seniors are and always will be the only center of interest on Class Day, for it is they who make the day, their last as seniors.

This last year of our school life has been the shortest and the most stirring of all. Through it our president has brought us safely, a remarkable fact, considering the size and dispositions of the class. There have been opportunities enough or dissension, but Bake is a superior manager and there has been no discord in our career.

We began about the last of October to think about the class rings. The result of this thought, the rings themselves, we had by the first of December.

The class meetings concerning them were many and stormy, and we had some difficulty in coming to any conclusion at all.

The sociables in A were not as thrilling as they had been. I suppose because we had become hardened to such a mild form of dissipation. At all events a good many of us did not go at all, which was rather hard on the sociables.

The most interesting study this year for the Classical section was Literature. Really, it is a delightful subject when considered under our circumstances, these being a merciful and masculine instructor. As for the scientific division, its regard was divided between bookkeeping and chemistry, both lovable subjects, they tell us. Once there was an awful explosion in chemistry, and Elizabeth Coyne forgot herself so far as to shriek and run. She didn't faint, but I wish she had. It would have made such an impressive climax.

The hockey was creditably managed by Anna Reeder and Ruth Rowland.

Nance was an especially good and zealous captain, and we brought the season to a close with the team more interested and better organized than it had ever been before.

It is customary in A to have a "Literary Society," for the purpose of entertaining the school once a month, when there is no meeting. So we had such a society. Mildred Stern was president and Katharine Turner secretary, and altogether it was quite a bore. We feared that we only rivaled meeting, but we really tried to be as inoffensive and amusing as possible.

About February we began to get ready for graduation. Class meetings, many and long, were called, and the RECORD Staff and Class Day officers and committee were chosen in rapid succession.

In March we went to Washington and had as joyful a time as any Class A has ever had. The boys of the class and our Literature professor sent us a box of things to eat. It was a very large ·box, enough for two feasts, and the gentlemen rose immensely in our estimation. Class 8 also sent us a supply of food.

I should here mention two choice bricks which the dear girls gave us as a little joke. We left them in Washington, where they now stand in a graceful pile ·a short distance from the Washington Mon~ment.

In April a great many things happened. On the 9th Laura Parry gave a large and elegant card party. The whole class, both boys and girls, and all the teachers who had ever attempted to instruct Laura were invited. It was a delightful party, and would have done a great deal, I am sure, to further that ideal'and desirable relation betwen teacher and pupil, if only all the teachers had come, as they should have done. Our first and only class dance was given on the 15th at Asher's.

We practiced basket ball earnestly this year, because it was our last year and we wanted the cup. The final game between A and 8 was fierce and close, and we did not win. So far I have said nothing about the contests ( although there was one every year), because there has been nothing to say.

There is srill nothing to say. We received none of the athletic honors, and we wanted them very much. They said we were good losers , and so we were, for there was nothing else to be.

And now, having come, safely and happily, to the point of graduation, we are done with our school life and our history as a class. We are sorry that our school days are over, but being more or less youthful, we are also glad, and look forward to the future with interest and pleasure. We say good-bye to our teachers with fondness and regret, and we hope that they have some such feeling for us. The class breaks up, we separate, and take our different ways. "To know, to esteem, to love-and then to part-makes up life's tale."

CAROLINE SHOEMAKER.

To write the history of such an illustrious class as that of I 91 0 would require the services of one who has much ability as a historian, but as such, an one is not to be found among our number, the task of giving our history has fallen to me.

When we first entered Friends' Central we were, indeed, a green-looking bunch, but, although, we were the victims of many jokes played by the older students, we soon showed them that we were equal to any trouble that might anse. We could hardly keep still the first few days of school, and to a certain extent this restless spirit has clung to us even to this day. It is needless to say that the girls' department was and always has been the center of attraction; the other rooms which attracted our attention were the laboratories, which we regarded as rooms of mystery.

The fellows of this class have always had plenty of school spirit, and, strange to say, the course which we received in manual training has helped us to show it. In doing our work we were shown how to use chisels and other woodcutting instruments, and as a re-suit of this training we took advantage of any spare moments to cut "191 O" or "F. C." in our desks.

Day after day brought forth new battles not only with our studies, but also with other students. One duel which I have in mind was fought during a class meeting between two members of our class. The weapons, however, were not of the usual type, but consisted of oranges.

The 9bject of the encounter was to see who could throw the most juice on his opponent in a given time. I shall not say who were the duelists in question, but I wish to say, and I trust that Mitchell and Macfarlan will hear it, that each one should be kind towards his neighbor.

The ease with which compounds were made in the chemical laboratory was very striking, but this is not all, for, in addition, these mixtures were very obnoxious. The compounds manufactured by Baxter in particular had such strong anresthetic powers that the class suffered much drowsiness for a week. It is a shame that this brilliant young man is not going to become a chemist, for it is possible that he would make some very important discoveries.

One of our most striking traits, taking the class as a whole, was the quickness with which we could answer questions, whether we knew anything about the subject or not. This keen perception of ours soon placed us at the fore of all classes, so that we were looked upon as the most intelligent lot of greenies 47

that evere entered the school. An incident which occurred in the chemistry class showed this very plainly: Professor-"Who discovered oxygen?"

This, in a brief way, is the history of the class as a whole, but in order that you may get a better idea of my classmates I shall enumerate some of their individual characteristics.

No doubt you have all heard the old saying that much can be done with a Scotchman if he is caught young enough. The supposition is that Macfarlan was not caught young enough, but I think that Mac's peculiarities, especially his laugh, are due to a fall that he had in the gymnasium, while giving his classmates an exhibition of fancy jumping. He was attired in the garb of a Scotch Highlander, and upon his emerging from the dressing room, was greeted with loud applause. After taking one of his graceful runs and alighting safely on the springing board, he shot up in the air and tried to turn a somersault, but unfortunately failed in the attempt. He managed, however, to get half-way over and then landed on his head. We all ran out to help him up, but he declined our aid, saying that his head did not pain him in the least. Nevertheless, his hair seemed to be disarranged the rest of the day.

Certain teachers were under the impression that our vocabularies were weak in up-to-date slang expressions, and advised a number of valuable editions of these terms to be placed in our libraries. After securing the recommended volumes, we were able to converse with any person on any current subject. Even Grim was heard to give utterance to several of these expressions on certain occasions.

This course was not necessary for Hopkins, for he could beat any other boy in the class at it. Had we paid strict attention to Don's conversation we should have been better versed on the subject.

The class also possesses a couple of fishermen; namely, Harris Williams and Joe Craft. Some of their tales of how they caught "suckers" are quite remarkable. In the summer months Williams retires to the wilds of Jersey and there invents his wonderful stories. Craft's fishy adventures occur near Ambler, but I do not see how he can have any luck if he gives vent to much of his laughter.

Fussell, having tired of farm life and wishing to know something about arithmetic, geometry, etc., decided to join our school. He started out well, but after a short time got into bad company, and like the majority of farmer boys, readily learned to drink soda water and smoke cigars. In regard to his recitations, he was brilliancy itself. He always asked the professor to repeat the question, and in the meantime would get the answer from his neighbor.

Cahall, although a pretty good athlete, has convinced us that he cannot balance himself enough to walk a log. One day while out for a walk with several companions, he tried to cross a stream into which emptied much sewage. No

doubt his mind was occupied wi"th thoughts of a certain young lady, but be that as it may, he slipped, and down went McGinty. When he reached dry land again, he shook himself vigorously, but, alas! the mire stuck closer than a brother.

After a three-mile walk, he was able to borrow a suit of dry clothes, and then went on his way rejoicing.

Bill Smylie is a very quiet and peaceful fellow. He made so much noise in the classes that some teachers threatened to order him out, and others threatened to throw him out. He is always ready with an answer to any question that may arise, be it correct or otherwise, and is particularly fond of the society of the fair sex.

Mitchell entered with us as a Freshman, and a very fresh Freshman he was at that, but time and a little training soon relieved him of a great deal of it.

Paul, otherwise known as "Handsome Harry," has used more chalk than all the other fellows put together, but not in writing on the blackboards. His specialty is to try his aim on other people.

Last, but not least, is to be mentioned our honorable president, John White. His being president of the class has shown us that he is fitted for a diplomatic career, and we earnestly hope that some day we shall see him chief executive of the United States. The soaking-in power of his brain is very great, as was shown one day while we were visiting a soap factory. He told the proprietor of the place that he had learned more that one day than he had in the nine years that he had been attending school.

I shall conclude by saying that our period of good-fellowship will soon be over, but I hope that a sincere friendship remains and will continue to exist among us.

<15irl5'' ~tatiGtit5' One balmy afternoon in coincidence with my thoughts, which were wandering back to my classmates of nineteen hundred and ten, I received an invitation to accompany Caroline Shoemaker to an entertainment under the direction of Marion Baker. Incidentally I was very glad to accept, for I would have a chance to try the new Packard airship which Caroline patronized and see again some of the girls.

While on our way we were recounting for the most part our activities during the few years after school. and Caroline's work had been principally in the gymnasium. However, we were not so entirely occupied with each other but that we noticed a passing airship, in which there were two girls. The one was buried in the pages of a book, the other quietly gazing into space.

They recalled two of our classmates, and upon nearer approach we saw that they were Edna Conrad and Marguerite Leedom.

At the hall several airships were circling around ready to alight. This process, though a most difficult one, was gracefully accomplished by Helen Moore, which was not surprising as she was ever our graceful girl. Katherine Turner in the meantime was fixing her stray locks and securely pinning hat and veil. Peals of laughter attracted out attention to Gertrude Wright, who was making all manner of fun of Katherine, the prinker.

Turning to the hall, we were greatly astonished to find Edith Williams and several others coming back. Edith explained that Gertrude had seen a sign which said that the performance would be postponed. Caroline quickly perceived that is was only Gertrude's bluffing. This was one time when Edith's brightness failed her. So we all started downstairs-not all, for Margaret Wilcox would ride in the elevator. Before we had reached the bottom, we heard a thump behind us. Edith Young had fallen downstairs, and was doubled up with laughter at her own clumsiness.

We were finally ready to enter the room, when we were met by Margaret Wilcox, who had sent out for some flowers, and with her usual generosity was distributing them among us. The room was filled with girls, among whom Grace Maloney in her neat and stylish suit was most striking. At one side an admiring circle was surrounding Marion Baker, our most popular girl, and one to whom first honor was conferred. Here was Rachel Shoemaker, who had the distinction of third honor. Her arm was lovingly around her friend as she listened politely to all that was said. They were discussing some serious ques5-1-

tion of the day, Ruth Rowland energetically upholding her opm10n on the subject, giving it greater emphasis by knocking her opponents and stubbornly refusing to accept any other view. Marion Yerkes was doing most of the talking, while Laura Pancoast was enlivening the conversation with her witty and entirely original remarks. At times the conversation became a battle of words, but Rachel Shoemaker always proclaimed a truce and pacified the combatants.

The conversation was safely turned into other channels, the design of the programmes commented upon and Mildred Stern's talent greatly praised. Her latest story also had its share of appreciation. Off in the corner Elizabeth Estes, our class imp, and also the cutest and daintiest, was having a consultation with Caroline Shoemaker, the mischief-maker, and we felt that trouble was brewing. So we sent Edith Williams, our class angel, tactfully to convert impish schemes into plans for a reunion at a gymnastic meet at Friends' Central School, for Edith had kept up interest in athletics as a relaxation from the mental activities into which her brilliance had led her.

There were two youths present, namely: Gregor Macfarlan, the most popular boy among the girls, and Harry Paul, the best looking. The honorary guest of the occasion was Miss Eisenhower, who stood highest in the favor of the girls of nineteen ten.

The feature of the afternoon was the unveiling of a full-length composite statue of our girls. Mildred Stern had been the sculptor of this marvelous piece of work and had put life into this statue in such a way as to portray Ernestine Meyers' eyes, Grace Maloney' s nose, Marion Baker's complexion, Anna Reeder's face and hair, Elizabeth Estes' mouth, Marion Yerkes' teeth and the hands and feet of Marion Baker and Elizabeth Estes, respectively.

The figure of this girl was like Ernestine Meyers'. The girl looked to be seventeen years old. The statue stood five feet and four and a half inches high and weighed about one hundred and fifteen pounds.

The whole afternoon was a most enjoyable one, because we took more naturally to fun than to anything pertaining to work. This was an enthusiastic assembly of the Class of Nineteen Hundred and Ten, and class spirit and the love of the old school was deeply manifest in the singing of the last number on the programme, which was the glorious song of Nineteen Hundred and Ten. mopG'' ~tattG'titG' The class of 191 0 is composed of fourteen fellows, seven being Blues and seven Grays.

Our average age is I 7 years 9 months. "Bill" Smylie is our oldest member, while Harry Paul is the baby, being only 16 years 4 months. Our average height is 5 feet 9 inches. John White, our president, is the tallest member of the class, being 6 feet 3.5 inches. John is not only built up and down, but is also the heaviest fellow in the class, weighing 158 pounds. Our average weight is I 3 7 pounds. Nelson Grim wears the largest shoe in the class, size I 0.5, while Fussell wears only a six.

The majority of our members have brown hair. Smylie is noted for being our "blue-eyed blondy." For eyes we have many colors, blue heading the list, with gray, brown, hazel and green following.

Mr. Lawson was elected our favorite teacher and Smylie our most popular classmate. To prove that he was th~ most popular, he was elected the best-looking fellow, the class fusser, the biggest rough-houser ( as he proved in Washington) and also the nerviest. Baxter was elected the greasiest grind and the biggest hot-air merchant. Ralph Cahall is our most conceited member. Charles Clappier is our most ambitious, while John White, the class giant, is our laziest member. We feel sure that John will fall asleep some day standing up. It has nearly happened many times in school. Harris Williams is our class runt. There is over half a foot difference between White's height and that of Williams. "Joe" Craft, "the pride of Ambler," is our bestnatured member; you nearly always see a smile on his face. Fussell has proved many times in many classes, and outside of them, that he deserved being called the freshest member of the class, but Macfarlan is a close second for this honor.

We are all aware of the fact that Nelson Grim came to us green from the farm, and that he now returns every evening to do the chores about the barn, so we elected him our class farmer. Donald Hopkins was elected our luckiest member. Gregor Macfarlan is the clumsiest fellow in the class. For proof ask him to run for you or call him certain things and he will run after you.

William Mitchell is the member of this class who is most likely to succeed, and with certain help we feel sure he will be a great man ~ome day. Harry Paul 56

is our sportiest member, which is self-evident and shown by his pronounced attire. Helen Moore is considered the best-looking girl, and Marian Baker the most popular by the fellows of the class.

Since we have been students in the Friends' Central School we have had the best kind of time imaginable, and we now leave the School with regret that we cannot return next year. But, as we cannot, we wish the school the best kind of success in the future.

MARION CASEY. Marion, I had a dreadful time thinking of something for you. I finally decided on a Sis Hopkins' Book. Of course, the connection is hard to see, so I am taking the liberty to send the people to you for explanation.

Edna, I want you to take this thermometer, and here's hoping you will win as many degrees in the years to come as you have earned in Friends' Central School.

MARION YERKES and EDITH MULLEN. Behold the politicians of 191 0 ! Weeks before elections they would hold their secret meeting.

Girls, I have a party badge for both of you, and advise you to always vote the straight ticket.

ORPHA M cNEIL. Bashful 1910 once received a severe shock by Orpha's crying out in German class, "It is silly to hear other people make love, but it is all right when you are the one concerned."

Now, Orpha, we don't know anything about that, so I've brought you this noble knight, that we might have our first lesson at your expense and apparent experience.

ERNESTINE MEYER. Ernestine once told me confidentially that her one ambition was to go through a penitentiary, an asylum and a slaughter-house.

I think you all recall the saying, "Birds of a feather flock together"-well, what we know about Ernestine!

Now, I have obtained a permit for you to inspect the desired grounds at your leisure. And here is some thyme.

Put it in your shoes on the all-important day, so you'll be on time once in your life.

And please don't start your moral lectures on any of the poor victims.

LAURA PARRY. The minute the class took the fatal step of electing me one of its presenters, Laura's cry was, "Don't make a fool of me on class day."

At any rate, let's see if this fool's cap is becoming.

Is there any one present who has seen Laura when she wasn't in a hurry? If so, that is more than any one of us has ever seen. Laura, I'm going to give you this bustle. Oh, don't mind blushing; we are all blushing, every one of us.

ANNA REEDER. I just know Anna is a born lawyer.

Whenever we encountered a particularly important or difficult clause in the Constitution, Anna would exclaim, "Well, I think that's right.

I think that is a good law."

I want you to have this booq on law, Nance; study it carefully, and you'll surely have fine results.

EDITH MULLEN and MARION YERKES. These girls are especially fond of the opposite sex. Here are a few men on a string. Keep them there, and, I suppose, you'll be perfectly contented.

Now, ladies and gentlemen, that is Caroline's chief occupation.

RACHEL SHOEMAKER. Papas, mammas, brothers, sisters, sweethearts and the man that just went out-you are now meeting the best all-around girl in 1910, and that is saying a whole lot. See, she is smiling as usual.

GERTRUDE WRIGHT. For some years Gert has been troubled with an en-

larged head, and for some months with a bad case of sore head, so I'm going to tie up this troublesome member. Gert has a mad desire at times to call the class to order. I've gotten you a teacher's rod, and we sincerely hope your future pupils will better heed your scoldings.

MARION YERKES. "Marion, is there any hope of your ceasing?" Yes, Marion's talk is incessant. When once you're started, Marion, immediately you become excited, and it is all up with every one else. I thought an ice-bag might aid in keeping you cooled down.

MARION BAKER, HELEN MOORE, KATHARINE TURNER and GERTRUDE WRIGHT. Here we have the remnant of the club, commonly known as Eta Pi. All they seem to do is to eat. Now, I'm going to have them eat for the audience. The bill of fare consists of pies, just like the club, and, like the club, they are lemon pies.

EDITH YOUNG. It is a rare occurrence for Edith to understand any teacher, and when Edith understands the teacher, then the latter doesn't understand Edith. Simply a case of misunderstanding all around. Edith, I thought a pair of rubber heels would avoid further trouble.

LAURA PANCOAST. Last, but not least, comes our most original member.

When Laura isn't moving the people to laughter indoors, she is out sailing. So Laura, I have a dear little sail boat for you, and we all hope you'll keep up last summer's record at lifting cups. It has been observed that in pretty much all your paintings you go over them with gray washes. You say you do that to produce the gray tone which you admire.

Well, it is "a good thing" also for hiding blemishes, which nobody admires. Now, as you are something of a painter and lean so much to the gray wash, I want you to have the right kind of brush to wash over your paintings rapidly, so here is a whitewash brush.

HELEN CATHCART will next come forward and sing or else listen. No more "mid-night oil" for you, Helen, on that chemistry. It'·s passed. And I understand that you have become quite proficient in its special branch of scientific cooking. That's good. I think you will make a good housewife. It has been noticed here that you are particularly fond of two sweet things- singing and chocolate buds. So here is a box of buds and a piece of music for you. I hope you will enjoy them.

MARGUERIT E FAUST, please to "trip the light fantastic toe" right up here, or is it only at the dancing functions of the University of Pennsylvania and of the Bellevue-Stratford that you like to thus trip it, and like to take the trip in that boy's auto? That ought to be a healthy way of going, and then afterwards your sleeping in one of those out-of-the-window bed arrangements ought to enable you to keep in health until you learn how to handle medicine. I understand that you are ambitious to study medicine, and, therefore, I present you with this medical book.

MAY R. GRAU may now come up m her own quiet way. Now, as to school studies, I know you did not like that old German, and I don' t blame you.

don, Washington. And again we saw that he "saw you off" for home. And at Baltimore all the class scurried to the end of the car to see another real man who came to see you there. Well, nobody blames you, May. In the absence of the real man, no doubt you will cherish the presence of this little artificial man better than the old German book.

MARGARET D. HANSELL next, may take her own time in coming forward, for I know she will not "dance along." "Peggy," your disposition runs largely to kindliness, and the only things I have found that you are inclined to dislike. are the two very unlike things-dancing and arithmetic. The only way I can figure out the reasons for your disliking to figure and to dance is because "you cut a poor figure on the floor." Therefore, I present you with this blackboard to figure on.

H. MARGUERITE LEEDOM next. Don't be afraid of "the platform."

Fear not. "What's the use, life is too short." So, you are a rather timid girlwell, probably it's better for a girl to be a bit timid than too bold. Let the boy be the bold one, and have the bold protect the timid. That's the reason why that little man accompanied you on your dangerous journeys to school last winter, ay, Marguerite?

Since your timidity needs such companionship, I give you this little man to keep with you at times when the little real man is absent.

GRACE I. MALONEY, please step up here gently, now, on those tender feet.

I won't bother you very long, and then you can run along and take your long auto ride. You prefer automobile riding to gymnasium work for your health, don't you?

We have seen, Grace, that you look more graceful in the "auto" with a nice young man than in the gym with us girls, but you appear just as well suited with a certain fine horse-and-carriage rig with a suitable driver. I wonder which kind of vehicle will win out in your choice? I rather think the latter will be "Victor," and, therefore, I hand you this little victor token.

EDNA PETERSON; no joking, now, but just come here and get your jolly.

I will not dwell upon your arithmetical achievements, because there is enough lighter material in your nature, which is easier to talk about. Poetry, for instance, and French.

Now, as you are going to the Academy of Fine Arts to learn how to paint, I give you these practical articles for a beginner there-a whitewash brush and bucket.

You were a quiet enough little girl in all your classes except history; but you would constantly rise up big enough there, to turn nearly every historical topic into a woman's rights harangue.

Always calling your sex the "weak-minded" one, and at the same time demonstrating yourself to be a mighty strong-minded one!

Here's a mallet to call your suffragette meetings to order, and take this hatchet along to get out of jail with.

ELIZABETH ESTES, please step here and take your little dose of "talkingto," since you have just tongue-lashed the girls of your section. They voted you the "class imp" some time ago, I am told. Don't fret about it, for since then they elected you their class presenter, because, no doubt, you had improved your ways and become more engaging, in consequence of your engaging yourself to that college man.

Don't get fretty, now, Betty.

Just let me see that piece of jewelry he gave you last.

Ah, ha! it's a college "frat" pin," set with diamonds.

Sure! that is an engagement token, but not so readily recognized as a plain solid gold finger ring. So now, as he has given you nearly everything else in the love-token line, I will give you a regular standard style of engagement ring, of large enough size to be easily recognized.

Put it on the second finger, Betty.

The three girls who received more votes than any of the rest of the Class of 1910 for being popular are Marion Baker, Anna M. Reeder and Rachel C. Shoemaker, for which they will now receive their rewards : MARION BAK ER- A silver spoon.

lll\opG'' ~teG'entattonG' I have been presented with a small sum of money by our honorable treasurer, Joseph Craft, to expend for numerous articles to give to my classmates.

Before I proceed with this pleasant occupation, I wish to inform my distinguished friends that outside this door stand two secret service men, ready to aid me at any time. I sincerely hope that the brains of any of you are not so far affected that you will lose control of yourselves.

My first victim will be HAROLD CALHOUN BAXTER. Harold is the would-be chemist of our class.

Whenever we are fortunate enough to have a study period he generally asks permission to go to the chemical laboratory. On several occasions I have accompanied him on these trips.

At once he dons his rubber apron and proceeds to experiment.

He will pick up anything convenient and pour a couple of the acids on it.

He notes the reaction with interest, and appears to know what has happened, but I am well acquainted with his knowledge of the subject, and know he does not grasp what has taken place.

Take • this book on "Simple Experiments for the Beginner in Chemistry" and try some of them at home.

Next on my list is CHARLES HENRY CLAPPIER. Charles is our class electrician.

He occupies most of his spare time experimenting with electricity.

At home he has erected a wireless receiving station, by which he can receive messages from Washington.

Here is a small induction coil, which you may use to erect a sending station.

Next is JOSEPH CRAFT. Joe is an automobile fiend. He can talk about automobiles better than anything else, English literature not excepted.

He takes great pleasure in running down chickens, dogs, etc., in the vicinity of Ambler.

Take this book, Joe, and learn to run your car scientifically.

WILLIS FUSSELL. Without a doubt, Willis is the freshest fellow among us.

At that, however, he has to go some to beat out many other contestants.

Take this bag of salt, Willis, and salt yourself down.

NELSON GRIM. Nelson, the terror of the school, step up and behave yourself for once.

Nelson is noted as the noisiest and most disorderly fellow of our class.

This bad behavior is shown in class every day.

has to be rep~imanded by the different teachers for misconduct.

If you take a teaspoonful of this soothing syrup every night, perhaps you will be cured.

DONALD FRANCIS HOPKINS. While at Washington, Donald was kept busy most of the time writing letters to a certain fair friend.

Here is a box of paper, Donald, for you to continue the good work.

Donald is also noted for his powers as a public speaker. Now, Donald, please take this bat in your hand and recite "Casey at the Bat." GREGOR MACFARLAN. It is a standing joke among us to call Gregor a Scotchman.

Whenever he is called this he at once starts after you with the hope of beating you up. We all know you would look real classy in kilts, so, with our advice, wear this suit on commencement day.

WILLIAM R. K. MITCHELL. Ever since entering our class William has been a very successful basketball player. Every year he has played on the class team, and this, his last year, he played on the school quintet.

Next year he intends to try for the Penn Freshmen team. Take this suit, William, and wear it until you make the team.

HARRY PAUL. Although he may not look it, Harry is the baby of our class. It is with great pleasure I give you this bottle of milk and nipple. Harry is also very sensitive about his looks.

Take this mirror, and be sure to carry it with you all the time.

WILLIAM SMYLIE. William's hair is very unruly at times. Most of the time this long lock is hanging over his forehead. As William is very proud of his appearance, I thought it appropriate to give you this curling-iron, with which you can curl it. Also, take this net and ribbon, to help keep it in place.

JOHN WHITE. John is what you might call a lazy lad.

Being short and quick on his feet, one would not expect this of him.

John, however, is always tired. On several occasions he has accidentally fallen asleep in literature class, and he has to be thoroughly shaken to awaken him.

Take this bed, John, and whenever you feel drowsy take a nap.

HARRIS WILLIAMS. Harris, who journeys from the wilds of Jersey every morning, is an old-time fisherman.

Nothing suits him better than to put on some old clothes, secure his hook and line, and start off on a day's outing.

While at Washington he and Joe Craft paid a visit to the Fish Commission, and we hope they learned something concerning this art while there.

Here is a fishing-rod for you, Harris, with which I hope you may have excellent success.

M. WALTER YOUNG. From his looks one would judge Walter to be a very studious and bright scholar. This may be true in some branches, but in the simple subject, spelling, Walter is a complete failure. The writing on all 67

papers which are returned to him in . rhetoric and literature can hardly be distinguished, owing to the numerous corrections for misspelling.

Here is a spelling-book, Walter, from which you may learn to spell some of the hard words. For example, cat and dog.

HAT Washington would be a very hot place, we were warned, but we found it a little heaven on earth. And truly one man among thirtytwo girls and two teachers would consider himself "a little god," for Mr. Cornell, our guide, was "little." So it is not strange that when Gert asked, "How can we get through the gates when the guide has the tickets?" that she was understood to say, "How can we get through the gates when the god has the tickets?"

But we did get through the gates at Broad Street station in time for the three-twenty train, on the sixteenth of March, and quite overwhelmed by the loyalty of our boys and the many friends who crowded the platform around our "special car," we started on that memorable trip.

I say we started, but there were as many suitcases decorated with tags and stickers that Mr. Cornell gave out like premiums, as there were for us. And the pounds of candy outnumbered us, for there were forty. "Last, but not least," was "Damit," our mascot. From his lofty position in the center of the car he sanctioned all with a most serene expression. He seemed pleased with the birdseye view of the little groups at "five hundred" or "euchre," with the crowd gathered around Ruth singing (?) to the music of her mandolin, and with the dancing up and down the narrow aisle. And even those sitting alone here and there, sadly watching violets or sweetpeas wilting, the last remembrances of certain ones back on the platform, seemed to amuse him, but "Damit" never mentions names. In fact, "Damit" never mentioned anything, and we felt him to be almost a traitor when he didn't say anything about a certain very large basket that the "11 's" gave us, and that our president carried all the way to Washington. But little brown felt dachshunds, as a rule, don't talk- just beam a hearty approval with their little black shoe-button eyes when the sun shines on them.

"Baltimore!" The word was like magic, our first stop of any length!

Card games ceased, singing and dancing came to an end, candy boxes were overturned, wilting flowers and even those for whom they stood proxy were forgotten, and all joined in the triple yell of "Rah, rah, rah, Friends' Central, "Philadelphia, "Baltimore, "Washington."

But Baltimoreans must be very unappreciative, for one of the railroad officials asked if it were a "car of Chicago baseball league rooters?" We resumed our former occupations.

Our next stop was our destination, and each one armed with a trophy of a "Special Car" poster, we entered upon our conquest of knowledge of Washington. Our sight-seeing began with that magnificent Union Station, of which our capital boasts.

The hotel met with our approval. After changing the furniture somewhat, we arranged it so that the formerly single rooms were changed into suites of three. The dining room, which was reserved for us, was made more attractive by the beautiful flowers Miss Love so kindly sent the class.

But we were "sightseeing!" So Mr. Cornell took us to the Congressional Library, the immensity, beauty and gorgeousness of which made us feel very small-and we had felt so large and important.

There was an eleven o'clock mail and "Ange" and "Bill" received letters, while the rest of us wrote them. Then we gathered into the largest bedroom we had, Marian Yerkes, Helen Rieger and Marguerite Faust being our hostesses, and expected a feast.

To be sure, more candy had arrived, but it was on that basket that we depended. Very ceremoniously "Bake" as we formed a ring around her opened it to find-two bricks! I can only quote Caroline to give you an idea of our feelings: "With the bricks with which the gentle B's provided us we built a monument to the perfidy of the donors. It was quite right that we do this, for all the world should know the depths to which human nature can descend."

It was at about this time that we met the "Duke." At least, "Rache" and "Jess" had the honor of first meeting this old gentleman who was so old that he had forgotten he ever was young, when he cornered them in the hall.

His demand to know if we were from the "backwoods" confirmed in our minds that he was a New Yorker. For who else but a New Yorker would speak so of this town of Brotherly Love? So, if while in that city you should ever get a peep into an old gentleman's suitcase and see a pink soap box, rest assured that you've met the "Duke," for "Bake's" pale-pink soap box was lost!

At 7 A. M. the next morning it surely was a case of "Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way"- around those sixteen rooms, when each 'phone bell rang to call us at that unearthly hour. But "Ange" was already downstairs answering that letter, or the one in the same handwriting that awaited her when she got down. "Billy" was too sleepy to answer her two letters.

Mr. Cornell seemed to have been imbued with the spirit of the "strenuous life" that Colonel Roosevelt left in Washington, for he hustled us through the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the Smithsonian Institute and its annex, the American Museum and then over to the Fisheries. After luncheon at the 70

hotel we went down in a special car to Mt. Vernon. There a living antique appealed to us almost as much as the impressive relics of that old mansion that means so much to us all. The old guide, with his long whiskers that rose and fell with every word of his parrot-like explanations, soon became the center of a very interested group. Poor old man, thinking his expression-worn statements creating an unusual interest, favored us with his most precious knowledge, till I fear had the "Duke" been there to hear the suppressed giggles, he would have been sure we had "no mothers, no training." "Nance" stopped giggling long enough to learn to imitate the old man in a wonderfully effective fashion, so that later we enjoyed an "illustrated lecture."

MT. VERNON .

GIRLS' WASHINGTON TRIP

Our stop at Arlington on the return trip put us all in a more serious trend of thought, for to whom does not the solemnity of that magnificent old place appeal? But our keen appreciation of that clever little play, "The Mollusc," given by Sir Charles Wyndham and his cast of three others at the New National, put us in a humor the-roughly to enjoy our feast which followed .

The juniors redeemed themselves by sending us a wonderful box of ideal things for a feast. "Boys will be boys," but our boys deserve to be called by a far grander title. Indeed, they might hope to aspire to that height of eminence which Professor Lawson has attained. For was he not a partisan in an enterprise which is recognized as a precedent of the Senior Class and as a 71

monument to their thoughtfulness and loyalty? Let it suffice to say that they may be assured of the appreciation of every member of the party on that eventful trip. We were handicapped somewhat by our lack of utensils in the preparations. But there never was more delicious fruit lemonade made than that wl:ich was served from the washbasin that night. The fact that the lemons and oranges were cut with nail scissors and squeezed by hand, and that the jar of Maraschino cherries was opened with a nail file, and the bananas sliced with hatpins, only added to its flavor. If Gert's toothbrush hadn't had a very flat handle, I don't know how we would have spread the cream cheese and the peanut-butter.

Another day arrived, and so did "Ange's" and "Bill's" letters. The entire morning we spent at the capitol. After a trip over the whole building, we divideq into three parties. Some went into the Senate, others took advantage of their opportunity to see the judges come into the Supreme Court, while still others were intensely interested in the close of that all-night session of the House, in which "Uncle Joe" Cannon played like a "game ~port" to the very end on the question of the Committee on Rules.

Here might be added a remark of one of our "hopefuls." When the guide was showing us the capitol doors the pages of the Senate were playing baseball over on the grass. The guide remarked that "Those youngsters in knickerbockers over there on the grass get ninety dollars a month." Just catching the last of this remark, this certain one of our "hopefuls," fearing to miss anything, asked, "Did you say the grasscutters get ninety dollars a month?"

We referred her to Grace for information concerning the Senate pages.

The afternoon was spent "at our pleasure" and three of us were pleased to accept an invitation to Fort Myer, where the drilling of the artillery and cavalry was magnificent. Others could give some very necessary information, such as the location of Huyler's in Washington. Laura Parry or Eleanor could, I think, while Helen Cathcart, Marguerite Leedom and Edna Peterson are well informed as to the Martha Washington Candy Shop.

That evening a comical show at the Columbia Theatre pitched us to the highest key of frivolity for our final feast when we finished the remainder of our fifty-eight pounds of candy and our three immense boxes of "eats."

The next morning, after "Ange" and "Bill" read their letters, we went to the Corcoran Art Gallery. It was marvelous, but Mr. Cornell hurried us out amidst exclamations of "Well, some time I'm going to come here when I can spend days and days." But he was relentless and Miss Eisenhower and Miss Sawyer backed him up. It's funny how three people won against thirty-two, but they did, so we went over to the White House, then to the Treasury and from there to the Washington Monument.

And here started the beginning of the end. A luncheon, which was the grand finale of our trip, and which was distinguished by "positively the farewell appearance" of our " cher ami Monsieur le due," who passed by with one of the glaring looks by which we had learned to recognize him. With three cheers for everything and everybody around the Gordon, except our peevish friend, we departed in a burst of glory.

In spite of the sleepiness which seemed to pervade everybody, it is needless to say that coming back on the train we had our usual boisterous tempest of fun, which ended only when we reached "dear old Philly," tired, but full of jumbled, happy memories. These we tried to impart to the same devoted friends at the station, who had gladdened our departure, till the whole station seemed in an uproar. So we attempted to convey to Miss Eisenhower and Miss Sawyer something of what we felt in gratitude for and appreciation of their kindness and care, and left each other with a feeling of good comradeship so strengthened that we shall always hold sacred the year of Nineteen Ten. M. TURNER.

It is gone-the trip that we all had looked forward to so earnestly. It is one of the things that happen in our lives that is never forgotten , and it will never grow old to any of the fellows of the class of 191 0.

On the 9th of March, in the year 1910, we all had our class pictures taken at Gilbert's. This certainly was a busy afternoon, for at 3.20 our train left for Washington. Leaving the photos, the whole class, which consisted of fifteen brave lads, started for Broad Street Station. At 3. 10 the gate opened and our fifteen courageous lads, each holding tight to his valise, strutted through the gate, while Mr. Lawson, who had the ticket for the crowd, watched us file in like emigrants. We were all particularly grieved that none of the girls came to bid us good-bye and see us off. Nevertheless, we forgive them all. Nothing particular happened before the train started, except a couple of hearty cheers for our fellows from the Friends' Select Girls, which we appreciated greatly. We returned the cheers with good feeling, and thus all went well until about five minutes before the train left. Then we heard severaJ. mighty yells coming toward the train. Looking out of the windows, what was our satisfaction to see William Hoos and Eustace Reagle coming to bid us good-bye. These were the only two who were sorry to see us go. They both expressed their sorrow by kissing several fellows on the brow and seeming deeply grieved.

Finally, "All aboard for Washington" was heard ; then we started. Also several other things did, including rough-house and the sweet strains of music rendered by our operatic singers. As almost every one knows, Joseph Craft is the wide-world-known tenor. He, of course, did not care to sing for Oscar Hammerstein. Besides Craft we had Cahall, Paul, Hopkins and Baxter.

Baxter, as you know, is the greatest of all sopranos. After the singing was over, Walter Young suggested playing 500 (of course for love). This was agreed to, except by several of our cigarette fiends, who had to make a call on the "smoker" to have a smoke dream of the people they had left behind them. The different card games and the coin matching went along very well until we reached Baltimore, where we stopped for five minutes. Here we got off so that the mighty legs of the crowd might exercise. As soon as some of the fellows stepped off our car they had to walk back and see if all the Friends' Select Girls were still there. Harry Paul said to one of the fellows something like this, "Say, Slats, let us waltz. I tell you I must." So waltz he did. When 7-1-

the train started again we all returned peaceably to our different games, until one of the fellows discovered Baxter diligently studying "Macaulay's Life of Samuel Johnson." That finished it. He had the nerve to study English above all things in our presence. Up went the window and out went Baxter's English book into Chesapeake Bay. Baxter said that more than likely some fisherman would find the book and think it a relic, but far be it from that in the estimation of the class. Undoubtedly the fisherman will think it a relic when he opens it and sees that the great Philadelphian Poet Baxter owned it. Mr. Lawson, who had the misfortune of taking charge of this wild crowd, felt very badly that such a good book as this should be thrown away. From this on roughhouse had full sway until we pulled into the Union Station at Washington.

The rough-house started with Macfarlan and Fussell, the long and short of it, or the I do and I don't. Fussell started teasing poor little Mac about certain things that I could not think of mentioning in this book. Why? Just because it is a school book. Mac, as we all know, is very quick-tempered and he wanted to kill the "Shrimp" as he called Fussell. Going through the tunnel one of the fellows mistook Mr. Lawson for Mac, much to his regret. The whole party were horrified to see Nelson Grim, above all people, playing cards.

The crowd then became interested in Hopkins appearing every once in a while as if by magic with some candy, which seemed to come from an unknown source. At all rates we thank whoever it was that made it, for it went very fast and certainly was enjoyed.

Fellows, if you don't know it, let me tell you to beware of Milton Walter Young, Jr., for knocks. I think, and I am sure you will agree with me, that Walter has a bigger vocabulary of cuts, knocks, slams, etc., than any fellow we know. But, thanks to one of the fellows, whose name I refrain from publishing, ran him dry, with the exception of the words "mess" and "wreck." The three hours and a half ride to Washington just seemed like so many minutes to us, but at last we were in Washington, our long-looked-for goal. As we sighted the Capitol there was a decided scramble for hats, grips, etc.

It was 7. IO when we reached Washington station. The station is certainly magnificent and looks well worth the money it cost to build it. As we entered the waiting room of the station we gave three Rah! Rah! Rah! Friends' Central, with three selects on the end.

What did you say? Certainly we had an automobile to meet us. Our machine after leaving the station drove us to the Hotel Gordon. As our car stopped there was seen a swarm of porters coming down the steps to relieve us of our valises, but we all preferred to carry our own, as we had almost lost several that way. We were about to register when Mr. Lawson told us that we were requested to leave. This, as you all know, was not because of bad behavior, but on account of the Friends' Select Girls. We all felt bitterly disap75

pointed on being requested to leave, but we never afterward regretted it. We ate our dinner there and then moved to the Metropolitan Hotel. In getting to this hotel we had a trolley ride for nothing, the only thing we received for nothing while down in Washington. The Metropolitan seemed very nice, especially when the clerk handed each fellow his meal ticket. Nevertheless, we appreciate the way the manager put up with us, instead of turning us out as the other boarders would have done. There were so many things that happened that I had better not begin, because they would take the rest of the book to tell about.

After dinner we started for the Congressional Library. Again we had another trolley ride, but this time we had to pay for it. We were all delighted with the building, and I know we all regretted that we had to get out by I 0.30.

We were going to march into the reading room, but were politely informed that the gallery was for us. After climbing steps after steps (these seem to be all there are down at Washington), we reached the gallery and were hurried around by the guard, who kept telling us that it was closing-up time. We then returned to the hotel and shot pool. Then we went upstairs and remembered the dear ones left behind by sending postal cards. After the postal cards were written, each fell9w went to his room to make his final change for the evening.

There was to be a race between the pajama men and nightgowns, but the race was postponed on account of the noise we were afraid we would make. Walter Young, Wescott Young, Joe Craft and myself had communicating rooms adjoining those of Mr. Lawson. These, of course, were the very best rooms.

After getting ready to retire, we started to run up and down the hall, seeing how little (?) noise we could make. We were all planning conspiracy, when the telephone bell rang, requesting us not to make quite so much noise, as the woman below could not sleep. Could you blame her? We replied that she must be mistaken, because we had been in bed twenty minutes or more. This night we went to bed at 5 o'clock and got up at quarter to seven.

The next morning, which was Thursday, we were, after showing our meal tickets, ushered into the dining room, which was very spacious. Here nothing particular happened, except that at our table no one could eat. After breakfast we left the hotel and visited several of the leading buildings, such as the Post Office, the Dead Letter Department, etc. At this department we were all interested in a device to send whiskey or some liquor in a pretzel. Another method was having a bottle fitting inside of a book. All these things were very interesting, and we think that it is remarkable what stuff is at the Dead Letter Department. The next place we visited was the Smithsonian Institute. Here nothing special happened, except that Walter Young admired the Squid very much and Don Hopkins remarked that its tentacles would make great parallel bars for the "Gym" meet.

After leaving the Smithsonian Institute, we visited the Capitol. As we entered, a guide came up and assured us that we would need his services, but we assured him that we differed with him and went our way in peace. First, we went to Congress. There was a scrap going on in the House of Representatives, but the majority of the members paid very little or no attention to what was being said. After leaving the House, we decided to climb the dome of the Capitol. If we had known before how many steps there were we would have taken it more s1owly. Going up was easy, but coming down a misstep would have meant the death of the unfortunate stepper.

After leaving the Capitol, we walked briskly to the hotel, just in time to change our street clothes for our evening clothes, which consisted in changing our collars. Oh, my! What a dinner! After the appetizer, we again tried to wear the stair carpet out by making a rush to the writing room on our floor to decide what we were going to do to pass the evening. Finally, it was decided that some of the fellows would go to the opera and others to see the "American Idea," and still others went to a moving-picture show. After the show was over, we went to Harvey's and had club sandwiches, soup, chicken, etc., and I must not forget that two of the fellows just ordered plain chocolate ice cream and nothing else. Some time in the wee, small hours of Friday morning we reached the hotel to find everyone still up waiting to have their swing in the rough-house. This night we had continuous jaunts up and down the hall and narrow and frequent escapes from the watchman. Finally, one of the boarders could stand this running by his door no longer, so when Joe Craft rushed by, he made a grab at him, but missed him, for, as you know, Joe is a sensational sprinter. But woe to the German that jumped out at Joe. Every one of us was up in the air and eager to fight "Dutchy," as we nicknamed it. Some time about 3 o'clock as we were leaving White's room, we bumped into the watchman, but told him we were going to our rooms. This night was the climax for raids and rough-houses on each other's rooms ( were outrageous). About 4 o'clock we all jumped into bed and some of the fellows had three hours' sleep.

After breakfast, we went to the President's mansion, but we did not see the President, because we had not told him we were coming. This, of course, was a great disappointment to the President. After viewing the things of interest at the mansion, we went to the Army and Navy Department. Here a guide came up to us and in the most polite fashion asked us if he could not show us around. He explained everything fully, and we deeply enjoyed it. As we neared the top of the stairs, he turned to Mr. Lawson and said that he was not a public guide and that he would be thankful for anything we gave him. He was so thankful that he told us if we knew of any others coming down, to refer them to Mr. Cannibal and he would show them around.

Next we went to Washington's Monument. There were a few of us, who were successful enough to go up in the elevator. The other members climbed up, much to their discomfort. The view from the monument is grand, and the cool, balmy air was very refreshing to us. Returning to the hotel from Washington's Monument, we were overjoyed to find two enormous boxes of candy and were so glad that the girls had not forgotten us. We ate, enjoyed and appreciated the candy greatly.

In the afternoon, stuffing our pockets full of candy, we started for Mt. Vernon. We went by boat, and we all enjoyed the trip. Mt. Vernon made us feel somewhat patriotic and we all behaved peaceably. On the way back, Clappier and Baxter became very hungry and went to the dining room to get something to eat. All the fellows who tasted the French-fried potatoes will assure both Clappier and Baxter that they were good and that they enjoyed them.

Again, this evening we went to the theatre, but this time it was a theatre.

Whew! Returning home, after the theatre we spent an agreeable time untilwell, I won't mention what happened. We were all hustling off to bed, when we heard the fire alarm chime out clear and distinctly. We all rushed for the hall, but were informed that there was not a fire and that we should return to bed, but we had forgotten all about bed and had rough-house in its fullest array.

Things began to fly, including soap, wet towels, hair brushes, tooth brushes and every other small ornament that could be lifted.

It was Saturday, the last day of our glorious trip. In the morning we went to the Corcoran Art Gallery. We were greatly impressed by the art as well as by the paintings. Leaving the art gallery, we went to the Bure~u of Engraving and Printing and were interested in seeing so much money, but felt very sorry that we could not have any of it, as we had hardly any of our own left. We also were interested in several of the girls at the Engraving Department, and several of the fellows I am afraid lost an eye. I vouch that we all wished that we had gone to this building first. Leaving here, we journeyed back to the hotel- for the last time. After lunch, we threw our clothes into our valises and started some fun. Some of the crowd played pool and some of the others did little jobs of removing the numbers off the doors.

Finally, Mr. Lawson announced to us that it was time to leave the dear old place and start back for "Good Old Philly." Leaving the hotel, we reached the station just in time to catch the train. The ride home was more quiet and peaceable than that going down. At 6.55 we reached Broad Street station a tired, worn-out, sleepy, happy crowd. After bidding Mr. Lawson, our kind, generous, good-natured companion, good-bye, and then our classmates, we scattered to our homes through the different parts of the city.

I can safely say for the whole class that our only regret is that we can never live our Washington trip over again.

I sat in the gloom of the musty, dimly-lighted old study, where the spider had draped his hanging webs over dusty rows of ponderous folio volumes, and the scent of a hundred centuries hung in the heavy air. Idly I turned in my hand a bit of mistletoe, shorn when the world was young by white-robed Druids in the dark of the moon. Of that verdant branch only a stump remained, worn and eaten by age, but it filled the room with its potent spell. There came a strange incense from the dusty tomes. My head sank slowly upon my breast, and I slept. A low call aroused me, as of a single bugle note, faint and clear. I stood upon a rolling wild bit of turf, where the grass grew soft and deep over my feet. A hundred paces from me, on a knoll of rising ground, stood an enormous ash tree, its great arms swaying, rustling against the moon-lit sky. Beneath it stood the gigantic armed figure of a woman. About her strange flashes swayed dimly, and at times the branches of the tree seemed to spring from her head. On one arm she bore a shield inscribed with letters of fire. A voice like the sobbing of many waters came from the tree. "Thou hast the talisman. Approach and . ask!" The piece of mistletoe, which I still held, was now green with leaves and glistening with berries. "May I see the future?" I asked.

As I spoke I found myself in the marble court room of a splendid palace.

At one end was a low throne, covered with a tawny leopard's skin, and on it leaned a figure in a pale-blue gown. She turned, and I looked into the eyes of Marion Baker.

"Hello, Mildred," she called. "Welcome to our city. Marion Hallowell will be your guide. She is, by the way, a teacher of literature now. You know how she has always loved the study." Marion did not deny this surpnsmg statement. "Well, as a start," she said, "this is our princess, Marion Baker. The palace is hers, and she rules the city built by the girls of 191 0, which you are about to view. It is situated on one of the islands of the Pacific, and though under a different government, we yet owe allegiance to the United States."

While speaking, we had been going through the palace, and we now passed out of it onto a street broad and lined with trees. Everywhere were figures clad in classical drapery, and the effect was very beautiful.

"Marion Casey is the artist who designs our clothes," said my guide. "She has changed the styles of the known world, and people in Europe and the United States would give millions for a single dress of hers. But she keeps them all for 80

us, and only copies are seen outside of the island." This did not much surprise me when I remembered how tasly Marion Casey had always been. But the next remark of my guide gave me a shock.

"Betty Estes is in a convent," she said, tranquilly. The class imp in a convent! Impossible! Pictures of Betty putting tacks on the sisters' chairs and salt in their coffee, stirred wildly in my mind.

"Oh! it's true," continued Marion. "Some love affair, perhaps."

"This is the theatre," she continued, as we showed her tickets to the official at the door. As we entered we saw Katharine Turner in Y ama Man costume spring upon the stage. She danced daintily around, her steps growing in time to the music. Then with four somersaults backward, she disappeared into the wings, followed with loud applause, flowers and boxes of butter thins. As we passed out we noticed a bent figure on the back row writing rapidly in shorthand. "That's Edith Young, the newspaper reporter," said my guide. " She also writes stories, poems and editorials, and is, i'n a word, the paper's right-hand man."

The next house we passed was very fashionable, as even a person as far behind the times as I could see.

"Marian Yerkes lives there," explained my guide. "She is married now and feeds her poor husband with chicken salad, croquettes, mustard, hot bread and sundaes." As she spoke the window sash was raised and a masculine arm hurled forth a dish of croquettes into the flower bed below. At the same moment from an aeroplane alighting on the roof there stepped a figure in satin, which I took to be the lady herself, and behind her, a creature too resplendent to look upon, Helen Rieger in the glory of her jewels, with which she now, having become of age, was beginning to adorn herself.

"On the opposite side," continued my guide, "you see the home of Lydia Ridgway, who wrote that charming book which everyone is so delighted with.

There she is herself weeding in her old-fashioned garden." Sure enough there was Lydia, and very little changed, as she carefully pulled up weeds and patted the ground over the roots of the hollyhocks.

Announced by the clatter of hoofs down the street, Elizabeth Coyne emerged, carefully driving a cow. "Sally lives on a farm now," explained my guide.

At the same moment a carriage drew up at the door of the house beyond Lydia's, and down stepped a busy little figure with a pile of books in her arms. "Re Williamson, the famous suffragette," announced Marion. At the moment of catching sight of me, Re had half-unconsciously drawn a brick from her pocket, but now, recognizing me, she dropped it back. As I was recovering from the shock of being threatened by so tender-hearted a girl as Re, the sudden whirring of wings in the air announced an aeroplane, and Ruth Rowland's voice sang out, "Heads up, below." We had scarcely time to seek 81

shelter by the wall of a house, when a huge airship swooped into the street, going, as far as I could judge, about 200 miles an hour. It was by in a flash, and Marion remarked. "We used to talk about the danger of automobiles. Well! We were slow. That's Ruth's aeroplane. She's as infatuated with them now as she was with automobiles a few years ago. This has taken the cup in the world's meet which was held at Philadelphia last year.

But I don't think it's safe. She and Laura Pancoast will both meet sudden deaths, and, I fear, I very much fear, the latter will be drowned."

"Why so?" I asked quickly.

We had now reached the summit of a low hill, and the road ran down to the harbor below us. On all sides the blue sea stretched away to the horizon, except where the view was obstructed far to the right by misty hills.

In the harbor, standing out to sea under a freshening wind, was a trim threemasted yacht, its white sails drawing. "That's Pancake's boat now," said Marion, pointing to it. "She has won three cups with it, and she's out in it every day. She especially likes to hold the wheel in a thunderstorm."

It did not surprise me to hear that Laura continued to win cups. How much more Marion might have said on this interesting subject I do not know, for we were interrupted by a little cavalcade of riders which came after us over the hill. In the lead was Margaret Wilcox on a black Kentucky thoroughbred.

"Margaret is now a riding teacher," said my guide. "She raises horses, but can never bear to part with them, as she fears they will be roughly treated. " As they passed, I did not wonder that she wanted them all herself, for a more beautiful band of horses I have seldom seen.

"You see those buildings on the right," continued my guide, as she pointed to what appeared a city, with towers and battlements, which crowned the far-off hills. "It is a college which has just been completed, with Edna Conrad as its dean. You cannot imagine how dignified and impressive she has grown.

Before you, near the beach," she continued, showing me a comfortable looking house with white curtains waving at the open windows, "is a home"-"Stop," I cried. "I can guess that. It's Margaret Hansell's Home for Poor Children."

"You're quite right," answered Marion, "and she even goes to the continent to get children to her taste. The few poor people we have here are amply tended to by Laura Parry."

As she spoke a huge red machine, which we had heard coming behind us for some moments, slowed up and stopped directly beside us, and Laura Parry herself, who seemed to espy in me a probable subject for her bounty, leaned out with a five-pound box of Whitman's extended in her hand.

"Surely you are poor and needy," she said, and without waiting for an answer, plunged on. "I know it by your dress. Have you any bon-bons? I 82

thought not. Ah! How can one get along without the necessities of life.

Take these. I have plenty more," and she waved to the back part of the car, which was filled with five-pound boxes. Suddenly her eye brightened.

"Oh! how could I have made such a mistake. Why, Mildred, I didn't know you. Well, take the candy at any rate," and she shoved the box into my hand, and the car was off again down the hill.

This sudden interruption did not in the least distract my guide. "Do you see the little cottage there to the right, covered with climbing roses and honeysuckle? That's Marguerite Leedom's home, and a perfect example of love in a cottage. There's her husband now taking home a pound of cheese for lunch. You see, they live on bread and cheese and kisses. Oh! Have you noticed those new Gibson girls that have made such a hit in the continent lately?" continued my guide abruptly. "Ernestine Meyer is the model from which they are drawn.

Since Gibson saw her a few years ago, he will sketch no one else, and he comes on here at least once a month to draw Ame·rican girls that are raved over at home. May Grau has tried some portraits of her, too, and they are quite successful. May's a very accomplished lady; she paints and teaches cooking, too, and she is more famous in the latter line than Mrs. Rorer herself."

Just here I observed a slim black touring car running smoothly toward us up the hill.

"That's Edith Mullen's," said Marion. "Did I tell you that she was the first in the class to marry? Eloped one dark night, three days after commencement, having previously earned money for her trousseau by writing for the Blue and Cra.)). She came down from the second story on a rope ladder, which broke when she was half-way down, and precipitated her into a prickly rosebush, but all's well that ends well." While she was still speaking the machine came to a stop beside us, and Bill herself leaned out.

"Want me to give you a lift back to town?" she asked, and continued, as we gladly stepped in. 'Tm going to Jess Dittrich's afternoon dancing class.

All the latest fancy, classic and round dances," recited Bill. "Oh, speaking of dancing, do you know that Angel Moore is touring in the United States in the role of Egyptian dancer? She does the weirdest figures you ever saw, with serpents and green stones and such. She's quite the thing. But here we are?" We had stopped before a gray stone building, and saying good-bye to Edith, we started across the street, where my surprised eyes took in the outline of our old Philadelphia Academy of Music.

"No, not quite," said Marion, anticipating my thoughts, "just a copy of it, which Eleanor Major had erected before she would consent to leave Philadelphia. She's playing here this afternoon, too; come in and listen." As we entered, Eleanor took her place at the piano. Then floated out a preliminary ripple of music. "It's called 'The Mountain Brook.' She composed it her83

self," whispered Marion in my ear. The notes came distinct and clear, like the pearly drops thrown from a cascade. Finally, Eleanor's sensitive hands swept up the keyboard like a torrent in spring, and the sound died away like waves softly lapping in a mountain lake.

Amid the applause, I cast my eyes over the house and noticed a familiar figure in one of the boxes-Anna Reeder taking notes on a little tablet.

"She's our great musical critic. What she says goes in the musical world. You see, she's our reigning beauty, too, but she's very unconscious of it."

"Are there any other musical people in the class?" I asked.

"Yes. Helen Cathcart has had her voice trained in F ranee, and now sings at the opera which Hammerstone has erected here. I have not heard her, but she is said to sing like a mocking bird."

Just as she said this, Marguerite Faust came hurrying up the aisle, looking at her watch as she passed. "Exactly three and one-half minutes to pack and catch the steamer," I heard her murmur.

"Traveling again," commented Marion as we passed out. "Where are you going this time?" she called, but the figure ahead was too harassed to answer.

"There is one thing I must not fail to tell you," Marion continued.

"Edith Williams has succeeded in deciphering the Etruscan script, and is now busy translating their literature. Caroline Shoemaker, our critic of art and literature, sits daily beside her and reviews the manuscript as it flows from her pen. The translation and criticism are to be published together, and, it is believed, will shake the scientific world to its foundations. Caroline's books are well worth reading, being full of delicate humor and delightful suggestions as original as their writer."

We were now walking back to the palace, and I, ra1smg my eyes to a house opposite, saw the sign:

"So Edna has a beauty parlor now?" I asked in great surprise.

"Yes, her motto is, 'Laugh, and you lose your wrinkles.'

Oh, by the way, I have not told you about Grace Maloney, have I? Well, she's mar84

ried to a Russian count, and a great society leader in St. Petersburg, where she dances all night, and has an early breakfast at three in the afternoon."

We were now entering the palace again, and turning to a low door with a red curtain, Marion entered, and I after her. In the dim light I could at first make out nothing, but in a moment I was able to distinguish Orpha McNeil in a red velvet crown and a robe, seated on a throne; in other words, a spirit medium.

"Tell her what you wish to see," whispered Marion.

Seized with a brilliant idea, "One of our dear old class meetings m 1910," I cried.

The tumult which resulted from this rash wish was so wild and unrestrained that "Bake" rushed in at the door to demand quiet in her palace, but stopped at the sight of her former self banging on a desk for order. Marion Hallowell made signs to me to follow her into a room beyond. where she quickly locked and bolted the door, in some measure shutting out the sound.

As I looked about me I noticed that the room had a glass dome, into which one could ascend by a spiral staircase.

"We are now looking at a marvelous invention," began Marion in the awe-inspiring tones of a professional guide. "In the year 191 0 it would have been considered magic. Anyone going up into that dome may see any part of the world, and not only that, but the people there can see, hear and talk to him. To show you how it works, suppose you wish to see Rachel Shoemaker, who has a ranch in the Rocky Mountains region of the United States.

She comes on here at least twice a year, and in between we visit her through this instrument."

Nothing loth, I went up into the dome. Immediately before me was Rachel on the back of a mustang, which was at that moment attempting to cakewalk on two legs a few inches from a sheer drop of a hundred feet into the precipice below.

"I am surely glad to see you," began Rachel's voice, as unruffled and gentle as ever. "I hope you will excuse Teddy's behavior. He's of a nervous temperament" - here she thoughtfully prevented Teddy from climbing the rocky cliff on the other side of the path-"but aside from that," she went on, as she helped him to finish a handspring in good form-at this moment an ungentle hand helped me to descend the stairway.

"You don't want to kill her, do you?" asked Marion, "frightening Teddy out of his wits on that pass. She's far too polite to tell you. Oh! Of course she's not really hurt," she continued, noticing my look of repentance, "and now let us see Gertrude Wright, who has charge of our troops in America. The United States is engaged in a terrible war with Japan. The enemies have even found footing on our territory."

I was up before she had finished.

Before my eyes unrolled a great 85

landscape; a battle was raging, with dull flash and thunder of cannon from the hill, surging of an army in the valley.

Over all was heard the shrill whirr of the minie ball and the shriek of dying horses.

Minutely the dun smoke which veiled the summit was shredded by fresh spurts of flame, and when the wind tore its edges the ragged flag of Japan was visible through the rifts in the curtain.

Now we noticed a movement in the valley, where the American army surged forward, and then, with one determined effort swept up the slope.

Beaten back by bullets, swept by the fire from the hill, through blood-clotted weeds and lines of fallen men, the infantry pulled their undaunted, though terribly thinning ranks.

Now the standard bearer wavers and falls, but a figure beside him catches up the flag, and waving its glorious silken folds to the sky, beneath which it rightfully should flow, cries through the infernal din, and waving her arm through the thickening smoke, plunges on; the grim veterans, with new heart, leaping after her.

Now we lose Gert's figure through the thickening smoke; now we see her again, a little higher.

Ah! We hold our breath.

The sudden shock of meeting forces on the hill , bayonet to bayonet, and our men rush over the embankment with the irresistible force of the tidal wave.

One long, deadly minute, then through the smoke which had concealed the banner of the enemy there floated high, torn and stained with blood, a cloth mingled red and white and blue, and beneath it there stood the figure which had placed it there.

I tried to look again, but my head swam round and round.

The flag and the figure drew near and assumed monstrous proportions.

I stood again beneath the ancient ash and its tall goddess, but as I looked, even it grew faint, and I found myself in the study again, and the light was now quite gone.

So, it was all a dream!

But as I lighted the lamp I saw that the mistletoe had blossomed into leaves and berries.

However, as I looked, even it crumbled away, and naught was left but the stump.

JJ5oprf ~ropt)ecp It was a warm June day in the year 1920. The sun was just setting m back of the cornfield as I drove the cows up the narrow lane that leads from the meadow to the barnyard.

I was feeling very tired and sleepy, for the day had been one long grind.

After penning the cattle securely in the barnyard I sat down on some corn fodder with the intention of getting a little rest. "Well," said I to myself, "farming is not what they told me it was.

I wonder if any other fellow in the Class of 1910 made the same mistake that I did?" My thoughts drifted from one topic to another, until my eyelids grew heavy and I fell asleep.

The scene changed from farm buildings and barnyard to Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, D. C. I was walking slowly up the street, examining my surroundings, when I noticed a line of curiously dressed men approaching me.

They were fourten in number, and no two were dressed alike.

The leader of this procession was about seven feet tall, and after subtracting five feet for legs there was not much left for identification.

I examined him more closely, however, and recognized him as John White, president of the Class of 1910.

After welcoming him, I proceeded to ask questions concerning his followers and the origin of their parade.

He told me that they were my former classmates, and that they had come down to pay the bills for broken furniture and crockery that were at that time ten years overdue.

My friend saw that I did not recognize his followers, so he proceeded to point out each one to me.

"This fellow," said he, pointing to a long-haired person in a black cloak, "is Baxter.

He is a poet of wide reputation.

His best work is entitled 'Elsie,' written when he was only a schoolboy.

"The next person is Cahall.

He has become quite the student, and is now studying with a venegance. He crams very desperately and is often heard to say when interupted, • 'Lemme alone, will you?

I want to get this before the bell rings.' " Not wishing to bother him, we went to the next person.

"This fellow," said my friend, "is Clappier.

He always had a desire to be an electrician, and has already worked himself to the front platform of a trolley car.

"This next person is an interesting character," said my guide, pointing to a well-dressed man.

"His name is Fussell.

He became interested in moving pictures when at school, and this hobby never left him.

He bought all the moving-picture stock on the market, and is now head of that trust."

The next person of interest was a tall, broad-shouldered fellow, clad in mud-covered boots and overalls.

I recognized him to be Grim, the class farmer.

I inquired of him concerning the year's crops, but his only answer was a faint smile.

I kept moving, however, as Grim had nothing to say. Next in line came a fellow in the garb of a waiter.

On his hand he balanced a tray of sandwiches.

The only words that I could get out of him were "Eats! eats!"

These words fixed his identity, however, and I recognized him to be Hopkins.

Once again I started own the line, but I had not gone far before I ran into a tall fellow dressed in the garb of a Chinese missionary. White told me that his name was Macfarlan. I could not imagine why that survivor of the good ~Id clan had chosen that occupation, but the other fellows evidently knew, as they all looked toward Mac and smiled.

Close on Macfarlan' s heels came a group of three people.

The first two seemed to be under arrest, as they were handcuffed, while the third person seemed to have charge of them.

"The two fellows in irons," said my guide, smiling, "are Smylie and Paul, and the third person is Mitchell, the detective.

Smylie and Paul were anxious to cause some excitement last night, so they rang the fire alarm in the hotel, and got thirty days for it."

After Mitchell had driven away his convicts, a hard-looking character came shuffling down the street.

On his feet he wore a pair of heavy boots, which were much too large for him.

He carried a long fishing-pole over his right shoulder, and on his head he wore a broad-brimmed straw hat. I glanced under the hat, but saw only a dense cloud of smoke issuing from a corncob pipe.

John told me it was Williams, from Jersey.

As soon as Williams found out who I was he started to tell me about the big fish that he had just given away to a friend, but I told him that my time was limited, so he started down the street.

In about five minutes the smoke from Williams' pipe cleared away sufficiently to enable me to see two well-dressed fellows approaching me.

One of them saluted me and handed me a business card on which the following advertisement was printed:

I told them that I had heard of that combination before, whereupon they left me immediately.

As these two fellows brought up the rear of the procession, I said good-bye to White, preparatory io departing.

Just as I was about to leave the spot I felt something rough moving swiftly over my face.

I awoke and found myself back on the farm, but I could not imagine what it was that awoke me in such a peculiar manner.

At that moment I glanced around and saw my pet calf standing by my side, about to lick my face.

That solved the mystery, and I was thankful that the calf had not awaked me before I was through with my interview, even if it was only a dream.

DaletJictorp The parting of old friends for the last time is necessarily sad.

We may

look upon this as our last parting, because we shall never come together in the same relationship as that in which we have been meeting during the past years.

Of course, we shall see each other occasionally; we shall come back

to these buildings and meet our old teachers, but we shall never have the same free-and-easy feeling of comradeship that we have had during our school career.

Ever since we have been going to school we have been waiting for the day when we should turn our backs on our lessons.

Now, that this day has come

we realize that we shall never be able to think of Friends' Central without longing to live our school days over again.

Some of us have been here from

the kindergarten and primary, others joined us in the intermediate and lower classes of this school, but we have all been together for long enough to have gained great love and respect for each other, and we feel a great sorrow now that we must part.

To our teachers, we would like to express our sincere thanks, not only for the knowledge they helped us obtain from our books, but also for the examples they have given us to follow.

For the last time, then, we must bid

farewell to our teachers, our schoolmates, and to old Friends' Central, under whose guidance we have struggled upward from the bottom until we are able to go out into the battle of Ii fe and meet whatever Fate puts before us. ]OHN C. WHITE.

<!5ftl6' atl)letitG We entered Class E, strong and vigorous girls, and our athletic ability was shown very favorably in our first gymnasium contest.

We were, as yet, inexperienced. We had not organized a basketball team, but that distinction would be ours the next year.

That time at last came, and all our interests were centered in the longanticipated game. We merely formed a team and excited interest in the three years' hard play that was to come.

But we were not so entirely occupied with basketball that we forgot the gymnasium contest, in which, however, we did not excel.

More was expected of us as C girls, and we started right in for hard work.

We had a very good team in basketball, and although we were not victorious, we made our rivals work hard, anyhow.

In the case of the contest, too, we forced our competitors to the utmost point before we could acknowledge defeat.

The next year saw the beginning of our hockey career, and our energy was devoted principally to practice, which gave us a good foundation for the A year's actual play.

Our aspiration to win cups in both gymnasium and basketball was again doomed to disappointment, although once again our class made the victors work hard for their laurels.

In spite of the handicap of the diversified interests of our final year, hope of victory was again revived, only to be disappointed, although at the end of the term two of our girls, Helen Moore and Edith Williams, received honorable mention for their splendid work in the gymnasium.

In the fall of this year we took up hockey in a more strenuous way than in the previous year.

Since hockey is rather a new institution in our school sports, we were too inexperienced to win against those with whom we played.

However, we go from the school feeling that through our efforts interest has been awakened and increased, and that we are leaving fine material to carry on this branch of athletics.

Our worthy captain, Rachel Shoemaker, brought the basketball team into fine shape, and we looked at the cup with longing eyes. We played the final match game with 1911 , and after a good, stiff fight the score at the end of the second half was a tie.

We would play for the next goal.

This decisive goal meant victory or loss.

We lost.

Although we have had the misfortune not to win any cups throughout our whole school career, we have furnished training for the other classes, and made them what they are.

We were strong enough to be feared, and the others had to work hard to win the coveted glories from us.
