It eemed to us then that the day would never come when we too should reach that open door, and, in our turn, with our friend gathered about u , sound with ong and tory the praise of Class and Alma l\later. nother year, arrain the clay rolled around; another cla , nearer to us, closer friends, tool up the strain. 'With what awe and envy we looked on!

How far above u it all eemed I And then the thought came to us that we were living the clays about which they were telling, the pirit of our clas was being formed then, and the life. maturing which in its ripening would bring us to this day, a day of clo e companion hip, and of ~eparation.

The thought grew and broadened; we realized that our record, our reputation was being made, and at times Class Day seemed a clay of reckoning, when classmates, past revealing, future telling, should sit in truthful judgment.

Another June and we see our true friends and allies '99's go their way. This is a loss indeed, but our Junior clays are now here and 'oo no lonf;er terrifie us. nd last year, they, too, left us and then it flashe 1 upon our minds that ours, 1901's woul 1 be the next Class Day, the next Commencement. A11cl clurino· these long month of study we have looked forward to the e two days as our encl, our goal.

And so, dear clas mate , to-day i the day to which we have looked forward for so long and for the ucces of which we have spent so many hours in planning and workino-.

To-clay· is our very . own, to-morrow belongs to our friends, and after that we are the world's. This

is the one time when the clas meets as a class, when it learns what kind of an organization it ha been and will be.

This is the day over which we,

T CHA?\ ED to be my privilege on one occasion, five years ago, to climb the steps of the tower_ of the Publi: Build ings. It was a bright, clear, cnsp, utumn morning, with a breeze blowing a i , i i i - » from the north, fo reb ding the approach of wintry bla t A I teppecl out upon that disfiguring superstructure which had toocl there for so long, while the upper part of lhe lower was in cour e of erection, I had fo r the first time a panoramic view of the ity of Brotherl y Love.

To the outh, I saw the conOuence of the waters of the Delaware and chuylkill , with the fo rmer threading it wa,· to,rnrd the sea. ,\s I changed my position toward the north and we t. the hill and dales of Pennylvania met my gaze. hroucled, as they were, by the trailing smoke from a locomotive, while the faint il ver lin e of the chuylkill flowing from its mountain home, was dimly perceptible in lhe distance. To the east, a ross the ri v.er, I saw the low-lying shore of J ersey, with the notorious, but no less highly-respectecl city of Camden.

When we were E's

How long I stood lost in revery. as I watched the bu y throng of humanity far below my feet, or the various kind of vessels plying up and clown the river, I do not know. l\I y attention soon became attracted to an in oming ferry-boat. which from my omewhat lofty point of view, seemed crowded to its utmo t capacity. l\Jy attention developed into urprise, as I aw the b dy of pa engers land and proceed up :\Iar-

one could go b.efore he was thrown out of class or presented with a few demerits. We likened our history and geography class to a barber shop; for invariably Prof. Reynolds would call out "Next," and, that unlucky member was eith.er praised or more often had a close shave in his grade. Every one here knows what a jolly time it is to have a "sub." Most unfortunately for himself and most fortunately for us, Prof.

Thompson was taken sick, Miss Abby Hall taking his place. Th~ "sub" was a very young man, who might be taken to be "very sporty," as our friend Stone would say. He always wore a black suit with a high, 0 o high, collar, around which was tied, as the ladies would call it, the ·'cutest" sort of a necktie. He soon .e arned for himself the name of "Brother," because he addressed his pupil as follows: "Now, Brother, can thee tell me who did that?" But a more familiar name was "Rubber,'' because of that remarkably high collar and the nece sity of continuous adjustment to it. His life was short that year, but he evidently recovered, for the next year he returned, not as a "sub," but as a full-fledged teacher.

We passed on to our second year, and an entirely new proposition came up before us. We had paid but little attention to that stern lord of the playground in our first year, but when he loomed above us 111 our second year recitations, we knew not what to expect.

ket street-a way that would have rivaled Cesar's tenth legiou. But when I saw reinforcements join them from either railroad station and also a fair-sized contingent from West Philadelphia, I lost inter,est in my exalted nature-worship and quickly descended.

Once among the boys I saw they were the finest lot of boys I had ever met, and followed them with a right good will. As we passed a large building, the front of which was adorned with the inscription, "Friend ' Central School," the crowd suddenly halted and one of the foremost. whose name for his parents' sake I will not mention, called out: ·'Say, fellows, let's join this school and show what a model class can do." The shout which rent the air showed how popular this sentiment was, and no sooner than said, we entered, registered, and had the first installment of the term bill sent to our fathers. In the constitution, which was subsequenly drawn up, was set forth the two-fold purpose. of our career-to ascertain how little the teachers knew, together with the peculiar attributes of each, and to make a record, for our elves, of which we might be proud, not only in good, wholesome fun, but in study and athletics as well.

To our extreme disappointment, we w.ere placed in the lowest class. Still, this did not baffle our attempts to reach a higher plane in the accomplishment of our distant purposes. We soon found out just how far J6

worth $2.25, which, however, the store-keeper said was $3.00. As u ual the man regarded the price too high and was about to depart when he was informed that he could have them at $2.50. Agreeing to this be placed $3.00 on the counter and much to his urpri e received $.; 5 in change. L'pon inquiry he found out the joke. Of cours-~ the moral of the story points to a man, who would take no advantage of another' ignorance. But, wlw could it not have been clone in our case? vVII\ is it that when we have had a hard mathematical lesson, he always takes the record while a comparatively easy one is passed without notice? Just one more rc1111111scence. \Vhile we were discussing bank discount, professo r always seemed to have a note of some kind, either promi sor_v or bank on hand to how us. One clav we were di cussing gold certificate and he said he thought he had one with him, and in a moment brought it forth. a $10 gold certificate.

Eventuatly we passed on to our third year and at this time were placed under the guidance of a new principal. \\·hom we have learned to respect and honor.

We soon found out what he did know and much to our sorrow, especially in the finals. we found out what we clid 11ot know. Dut most of all we learned hi characteristic .

The chief one was the art of telling a tory and choice of the ton· . Those miraculous tales filled our hearts with gladn,ess. for they ended only with the ringing of the bell; thus saving us from a mo t probable fluuk.

The re111arkahle feature of the e' stories was, that his own rel::ttives took the principal parts. Would it lire ,·ou if T related one of them to ,·ou? Dear friends. if _vou had heard the same tale once a week for nine months. don't you think _vou could remember it too? \Veil, it runs a' follows: The scene was a country st re, the owner of which wa our ''cheerful" profc. or's cousin. One of his customL:rs \\·as a colored man, who never bought any thing 1,ecause the price never suit,ecl. You must understand lhat the store-keeper was a one-priced man and would under no circum tances be .. jew-ed clown.' ' One day while a customer was waiting in the store, the tore-keeper saw the colored man co111ing t wa1cl him and said. "?\ow, watch me sell him something.''

If he is here today you should see him, although you will have to hunt for him. l can best describe him in the immortal words of our rare tone, who said. "Ile is the only man that can't reach first base without the aid of an automobile... Q11eer incidents occurred every clay, but to cap the climax: toward the encl of the year the evil spirit again gained uprernacy in the heart of our \Villi~. \Yhile professor was reading the baromettr. tretching as far a po sible to get his eye n a level with the 111ercury, Willie cried out, "Prof .. have a tool?" which caus.ecl much discomfiture to l'rofcssor and cleli~ht to the class.

Having lain do1111ant for a whole year 'Rubber" again burst forth in the same collar and necktie. It was our luck to have him in only three branches. The entire year was taken up in frolic. .. 'o recitation passed without the dismissal of one or more from the class or the distribution of cards or both. It was remarkable how quickly he could dis1 ense with one and take up another. For an illustration uppo e our friend Price was called upon to recit and hesitate in his reply. "Rubher" would shout out ... it clown. ~ ext. :\Iark him." At thi our cla -mate would a,.

"O. pshaw. Prof., thee does"-- "Price. take a card_;, "\\' hat did J"-- "Leave u ." So that is the way

our cla es were conducted. A stranger would have thought a number of animals were being taught the art of begging for a dinner rather than a cla ·s of youth rece iving instruction 111 the rudiment of grammar. \Ve had only one way in expressing om di approval of such action and that was by the use of chalk and :ubl er band .

1n our fourth year, we again came under the guidance of our ··cheerful" professor in geometry and algebra and the agonies, which we underwent, could never be C:e cribecl. This year passed q1;ickly hut pleasantly and it was in this year that our fortunes turned. \\'<.: had been considered the worst clas in the school. hut that title ha been supplanted by a much better one. We won in ath letics and our tudies were not lacking.

Clubs \\·ere formed, one of which held its meeting on the third Aoor :incl was called the "John L. Carver I ecess ociety." Th e one object of this societv wa to sati fv the wants of our innermost selve , l;ut we al o di;cus eel the 1opics of the day and listened pas ively to the would-be jokes of our "meek-looking'' Blue and Gray editor. -The other society wa neve r honored with a nallle, but met on the first fl or at recess. Jn religious views the cla s is divided. The Friends ve ry naturally head the list, but Presbyterian · and Episcopalians follow clo e in order; then come the Bapt1sts. and after these one Unitarian and one Romanist.

At a class meeting held se,·eral weeks ago. ;\l iss Tulia was ,·otecl the fa ,·orite teacher. The most de~·otecl of her admirers and well-wishers rejoice that her '·duty in respect to the sci sors" is performed after '' cla ;; clay." r\t this same meeting Helen Jackson, who has been our faithful president for the past two years, was voted the most popular girl. while Rehc1h Stone followed her as a close second.

The prize of beauty was awarded by ·'1901'' to the faii Jennie Sale. whom we now predict will go forth to conquer. \Ve all knew without even attempting it that it would be u eless for us to try to select the most popular boy. since we were sure that "our president's'' vote would be for D. I. T., just as certain that Rebab Stone wou ld nominate her '':'.VIaJur'' friend, and that Emily Janney would not think of voting for anyone but--. and o on to infinity.

Perhaps it was just as "' ell, for, if she had, we would not have had such a respectable number to repre ent our avoirdupois. \\.ith the nee s ary help of Jennie ale and two or three other ''womanly" girls (remember, we are not women until after we graduate) the average height of the class was brought to the 5 feet s¾ inchc. mark. .-\ . to the color of eyes and hair, brown is in Lhe majority. \Vf' are fortunat in having two girls with green eyes and ne girl with ;<auburn lock ·," hoth of which emblems are propitiou ones. I am sure that we would all like to join in thanking the e girls for existing, but especially for ex i ting in our clas . .

T \V r\ a long time to work and wait, up to the year nineteen hundred and eighty as our calendar runs . Dut on a clay in the summer of that year I arri ,ed horn from an extended medical tour in the Antarctic Continent.

A g-reat surgeon 1 had becom in my clay. The operation which I had that morning performed was replacing a man·. soul. l do not mean the physical xtremitie of the human locom oti\'e apparatus. but that pur.Jy p ychical portion of our -e ntity by which we live and 1110,·e and take examinati ns. Also in the ame morning 1 had relie\'ecl two people of troublesome second per onalities by electrocuting th e secondary spirit.

Moreover, I had patented a new hair tonic and a new cough medicine warranted not to kill in less than three doses. Acid to the e an Elixir guaranteed to prol ong human mundane or terrestrial exi tence by the space of twenty years per every close, and you have the sum total and total um and some of my total achievements.

But a I sat thinkino- of the e wondrou . ucces e , I wondered ~o what height , or depth , the genius of my old companions of 1901, F. C. S., had gone. I thought that I must he the last of my clas , thank to the Elixir,

trial bottles of which may be had at the Book Store at rates far in advance of tho e a keel by any other institution. Thus meditating I hit a plan, and a glass of soda. The plan was to visit my old friends and see if th ey had ucceedecl in taking their preliminaries for entrance to the Fields of the ood Boy • Happy I Iorne.

Then I dined on eggs, laid yesterday in the egg-farm on l\ lars, th e peculiar featur being th e discovery of the way to rai e egg from egg-plant . . \fter di1,ner l went clown to the office of the ·omptroller of Records. Jie travels to hi branch offices in th e variou planet once a week. 1T gave me a er dit slip enabling· me to lo k over a volume of records of th e Lif'.! N tracing the career of the cla s of 1901, although it has been difficult to choose from so many years of close friend hip, events which shal l be of interest to you all, yet I found it a pleasure to live over again in my thoughts the happy days which we as a class have spent together.

And o, my classmates, if I shall be able to recall to your minds a few of the many things which hav 37

occnrrcd during our five year of intercour e with one another :incl Friends' entral School. I shall be amply rewarrled and feel that my task has not been a useless one.

Then let us o-o back to that bright, sunshiny da_v in 'ep tember, 1896, which marks the beginning of our career. Picture to yourself a throng of gay, happy girls, who thought themselves big, even if they were not. ''Strangers in a slrange land." In spite of strange su rroundings, st ran ge faces, in lhe short space of a clay or two we fully recovc:red our composure and were able to find our w;:iy al;out this large building as well as any of the older classes. \\'e " ·ere proud of the title '"High School Girls." and braYely bore the concle, censions (;:1,s they thought) of the upper classes, and taking care. when called the ''little E. 's," to remind them that they themselves were once "little E.'s."

The first important event of that year was the organization of our Natt~ral ]-Iistory Field Club unde1- the kind supen·ision of l\Irs. Mary Dutton.

This club met once a month and interesting exercises were held in connection with ur work in the zoology class. Our president was nnie \Yhitney Kock, "·ho has since . to our regret, left us. To make our work in zoology more interesting. :-lrs.

Dutton kindly took us to the _-\.caclem~- of Xatural ~ ciences. to see some of the wonderful things of

which we had -tucliecl. Although we tri d very hard to become interested in skeletons of extinct animals bearing ·uch dreadful names, and pecimcns of all kinds, I fear we did not do justice to them, but on the other hand enjoyed ourselves in a way which l\lrs. Duttnn called shocking, and we sincerely hope that by this time she has f rgiven us our undignified behavior.

But the crowning event of ur Field Club wa the excursion which we took in search of . p cimcns for the Laboratory. One beautiful :\Iay day, armed with butte;rfly nets, magnifying glasses ancl other nece sary implements, we left school, bound for the \Vissahickon Creek, where we hop d to gain some priceless specimens. J magine our horror when we were compelled t thrust our hands in muddy water and seize squirming tadpole: ancl c;alamanders ! Some discarded this for the more plea -ant occupation of picking ferns and wild flowers, but a few bray iy kept on, and we r turned home with the fruits ,)f 01ir research-a few little salamanders, who, to our disgust, hacl escap •cl when we looked for them the next day. .,\s e,·cry outing has its mishaps, we naturally had ours. One of the N. lI. F. '.'s, while attempting to cross the ere k on some loose tones, overslimatcd her lightness of foot, and with a splash fell into waler up to her waist, and as a consequence

had the extreme pleasure of s1tt111g on a rock for the re t of the afternoon, to dry. Mrs. Dutton had e pecially v..arned u of the poisonous ivy and tino-ing nettles, but one of the girls, de irous of being fully convillcecl as to which was the nettle-bu h, innocently grasped one and said: "I this the stinging nettle, 1Irs. Dutton?" She was 0011 convinced that it was. Defore the close of chool we held a joint meeting in which we were treated to the melocliou ( ?) strains of "Die Lorelei." as rendered by the b ys.

The close of our E year wa a sad one in that it brought with it the resignation of our principal, :.\liss Annie hoemaker. Although we knew her f r one year nly, we considered ourselves f rtunatc to have known her at all, and were able to mingle our rc~rets with those of the upper clas · es.

The clay upon which we entered lass D we welcomccl Urs. pcakrnan, our new principal, who had been a ·sociated with the school f r a number of years, but with the "lords of the upper no rs,' and we couldn't help noticing her look of relief when she saw that henceforth she had to do with ladies. ( nr course was an uneventful one until the clay arrived upon which we were to vi it the Hahnernann :-lu,;eum with Mrs. Dutton. It was with a Autter of excitement that our physiology class

cro ed Fifteenth street. vVe might well indeed have been excited when we saw the reception which awaited us. Picture to your elf a group of girls walking along demurely, and suddenly coming upon a numbt>r of Hahnemann students laughing at them from behind iron gates, an indignant teacher exhorting the girls to look the other way, and guess the effect produced! It is needle to say that we enjoyed our vi it.

So n there followed the resignation of Professor Birdsall. Although it did not directly affect us , we could not but express regret that the other half of the class should lose so able an in tructor. But his place was ably filled by Dr. Walton.

And now, in our C year, we attained to the dio-nity of the "large room." It was then that we could fir t realize how small the E girls really seemed, bu: of cour e we never admitted it.

Then followed our first important class meeting.

The J osition of president was ably filled by Mabel Howarth. Through the combined efforts of the boys' and girls' president, we produced that pretty little work of art, our class pin.

In the spring of that ame year occurred the fir t Spring Sports, in which we were well repre ented.

It wa then that we began really to know what boy were in our cla, s, and although we were not acquainted with all of them, we gave them some

lusty cheers, with their names appended , to inspire them with confidence. \Ve went to the ports full of confid ence. positive that we would win the banner, but owing to the absence, through illness, of one of our best men, our hope s were not realized. However, armed with six or eight class yell . we succeeded in making as much noise as the other classes.

In the fall of '99 we ente red our B or Junior year.

The clay upon which we returned to schoo l th e lengthening of dress and putting up of hair was Ycry perceptible, but was enti rely consistent with our dignity.

As the res ult of a class meeting Helen Jackson was elected pre id ent, and, following the example of our predecessors, we decided to hold monthly soc iabl es.

Anna Buzby had the honor of holdin g the first at her home. This was the first opportunity which we had of becoming per ona lly acquainted with Lhe boys of the clas , and although at first there appeared to be a dividing lin e in the room, w ith girls on o ne side and boys on the other, towards the latter part of the eveni ng, thanks to the cobweb party by which we were entertained, we be('.ame more co nrageons and ventured to speak to one another.

vied by all the other classes, to whom we were a "shining example." \Ye very soon after held another one of those orderly, well-conducted class meetings. in which every one talks at once, and the chairman in vain crie , "The meeting will please come to order!'' Dut after H cien Jackson was again elected president, the meetings were conducted in a more businessi1ke manner.

Realizing that this was the last year that we would, as a class, be together, we determined not only to do as good work as we were capable of doing. hut also to r ceive all the enjo_ rnent from it that we could. To this encl \\'C held a masqu ecl sociable at our president's home. Following these were a Cibson evening, "\'ovelty Party, an even1n~ spent in iilustrating p pular songs, and several other delightful sociables given at the residences of different member of the class.

11[arri~ges, resignations and engagements deprived us of several members of our faculty. l\liss Jennie Amblt:r ancl ~Jiss 1Iary \\'ister entered upon ··the sea of matrimony." and in their places we welcomed ?lliss Emma Paxson and 1lis. ITaY . Soon after, l\liss ,\gnes Howson's engagement was announced, and at the same time her resignation as German teacher. In Professor Haines. chemist, mathematician, etc .. who is going into business for

Lectures formed a very prominent feature of our chool work that year. V./e were not only afforded the rare treat of a lecture by Dr. Edward Everett Hale, and a series of ten delightful lectures by Dr. Emily Hunt, but also one on \\Tireless Telegraphy, by two illustrious members of our faculty, Professors Hain e and Dilworth. And although, wh en one of these spoke of something being "much wor, er," there were heard ome promiscuous little noises ·w hich somewhat resembled the dropping of chalk, we cannot to this clay understand ·w hy Dr. \ i\ 'alton so kindly stood in back of those who happened to he sitting in the back part of the lecture room!

Soon there followed the Spring Sports. This time we were confident of winning. Our boys ·cored point after point, ancl as our spirits rose. the 19oo's sank, and when it was e\'iclent that we had the banner, we hacl our full revenge for their victory of last year.

After two weeks of college preliminaries and final examinations our n year came to a close and we gained for ourseh·es the title of A girls, or eniors.

And now, in the fall of 19::>o, we entered upon the last and best of all our years at school. \Ve could . carcely realize that aft r four years, which seemed to us like four months, we were really Senior .. en43

himself. we lose an able and uniYersally liked instructor, and I mu ·t not foro·et Professor Batchellor. , \fter his departure we all missed the pleasant periods in which we received our vocal culture and gave our dramatic rendering of Julius aesar. But in our lo ·s another chool gained, and we envy it its able instructor. :oon th ~re arose a desire for a basket-ball team.

It was soon fulfilled, and every Tuesday afternoon, with Mi s Abbie Evan a coach, the first and sec01hl teams met for practice. vV e oon after played th e other class teams, and it was hard to recognize in the contestants the stately ( ?) Seniors. ur days passed so quickly that almost before we knew it, arrangements were being made for our \Vashing-ton trip. Thes having been completed, O!l the morning of. pril 18, 19or, with :-Ii Emma Paxson and '.\Iiss Lydia Boring as chaperone , and '.\Ir. James Murphy as guide, we left Broad treet . tation boun 1 for \Vashington. lt would take the whole morning to relate all the incidents of our trip. \Ve saw everything that wa to be seen and did everything that was to be clone. \Ve have come to the con •l us ion that the wanderings of Aeneas pale to insignificance compared to the wandering of the 1901 girls in the Ebbitt House hall'i, 1 .\. '.\I. For, unlike Aenea , we had nicrht watchmen to encounter. It was quite a funny

sensation to be dancino- clown a long hall, turn a corner, and literally bump into a night watchman who appeared to come from nowhere, so . udclen was his appearance, and who kindly informed you that the noise must cease, as everyone in the house v;,as complaining at the office about the noise.

And the lady in 526 was so kind! o kind , in fact, that every little giggle heard after I 1 P. ::\I. was reported b_:,· her. f course, it was maternal interc t on her part!

As I said before, not havino- the time t fully relate everything, I will give a few suggestions to those who de ire to learn more of our trip. Ask Jennie Sale why Lieut. 1 lobson came into the diningroom one morning with a pink rose in his oat lapel, and why his mou tache is havecl. Ask a few other member of the clas whether a banquet was not held at the h tel on Friday night. A k al ·o about the occupants of the private car in back of ours, and finally ask about our ·'matinal" (r A . ::\1.) ieast and Ben Hur performance.

Our Yearly l\Ieeting week soon followed, and , after that, "the de! uge." For then the examinations began, upon the outcome of which re ted the yes or no of our graduation and our entrance into college. After two weeks or more of "brain" work, thi clay has arriYccl, the last upon which we can call 44

ourselves oupil of Friends' Central School, the day upon which we expected to have o much fun, and which we now almost wish were not at hand, for it means the severing of all the ties which have bound us so clo ely for five years.

Our Alma Mater will always live warm In our

memory. l\Iay we hope that she will not foFret us? May we hope that the class ha been an honor to the school. and that we leave a record worthy of imitation? The hi tory of our class is at an end.

Let the lights o-o out and the curtain fall forever on dear old 1901.

Classmates, incidents are bound to happen through ut the course of ·chool life, that hall recur to us in our reminiscent moments and shall end a thrill of pleasure through us as we remember this or that comrade and associate with him some exploit or scapade.

of 1901 is one great body, bound together by ties that can be made only through the schooldays in youth; we are a one, we hole~ almost in equal esteem eac11 or our comrades. And so it wac; not without some difficulty that the two most popular men were elected.

To :\Ir. . \rthur .Haddon Hopkins, clas pre ident, the cane was awarded as a token of popularity among his comrades. l\[r. hopkins, it is my honor to present to you, in behalf of the Class of 1901, this cane, as an emblem of the gn::at.est popularity. May it ever remind you of these glad clays at Friends' Central. We in our turn will need no remembrance to recall to our minds the pleasant hour spent in your company.

The bowl was elected to Mr. C. Percy Major. Percy, it is our firm belief that you have in all transactions acted for the best of 1901. You have ever had' our intere ts at stake. Ah, many are the pleasures we have enjoyed with you. Ilut the full quota of its pos ibilities was something of which I had never dreamt. However, they were soon to be unfolded to me, though I little thought it as I resignedly laid clown my book, in order to answer a 'phone call. '"Well ," ~aid an unknown voice, as I asked who wanted me, '"are you enjoying yourself?'"

The irony of this question eemed to me to be so apparent and hearties that I an werecl, forgetting that I did not know to whom 1 was talking, "Oh, ye , immens ly. I don't know a per on in the place. I found my way to a chair to sit clown to try to collect my scattered wits. Was it really 1915? No, a glance at the daily paper close at hand, reassured, me on that point, leaving me only the other question, ''Who was my informant?"

Was I the victim of a J ractical joker, or was my friend, as his words, 'a half hour of my precious self,' seemed to signify, real! y old Father Time? If it wa old Father Time, did he really think it was 1915, or was h merely joking? Alas, I fear I shall never know. but I shall always wonder and never be satisfied.

Tl{e two half-back positions have been well filkd.

Ilarry Evans brought the qualities of a fir t-class encl player to the right side and displayed an ability to skirt the left end or follow guard-back for ubstantial gains. His former experience stood him in good ser\'ice in backing up the forward on defence. Eldredge at left-half was another discovery. He wa. new at the school, but by no mean new at the game. Lightning speed and an ability to do lge always enabled him to make long gains. His playing at full-back on defence was little short of phenomenal. ure tackling and wift running back of the ball saving the eleven many yard of hardfought ground.

Captain Fortiner was one of the few players who were fixture from the fir t. He bucks the line for never les, than hi length. and often for ubstantial results. His most brilliant work was hurdling th line and breaking through to down the oppo ing runner behind his own rush-line. The single defect in Hmrnrd 's playing was his weakness in his kicking. Fortiner sustained the role of captain and its attendant responsibilities well, and no fau lt is to be found with his direction of the team .

The 1900 football team was evenly balanced a to weight. the back field comparing favorably with the line. It wa not .o fast as a team composed of such go cl individual playe rs ought to be, nor was the team so alert for team play a we should like. How-

ever, with the comparatively few regular practice matches played before any given game, more could hardly be expected. To the loyal support of the whole chool, e peciall of the Girl ' Department, in their attendance and che ring, is du the quality of football which has won the games f 1900, including the championship of the Friends' . thletic Leao·ue.

Xot only from the pre ence of a large number of our fel low-students . however. did the team receive its encouragement. An important note would be left unstruck if the attendance of the Faculty were not commented upon. \Vhcn we saw our reverend instrnctors throw up their hats and chee ring like delightt'd boys. it convinced us that football wa worth the while, and we hope next y ar's team no greater uccess beside the ch::tmpionship than lo arouse in our Faculty the degree of enthusiasm evinced by our games in 1900.

The Spiders finally wound up the season with a very creditable victory over the Atlantic City J [igh chool five. The F. C. S. team went clown to .Atlantic ity on Friday afternoon of the 29th, and in the evening went to the steel pier, where th ga111e was played. They went on to the floor a little early to try and get used to the baskets , which had no back board. to them, and after ome practice the Atlantic City team came in and the game wa started_. The Royal Italian Band furnished the music, and there was an audience of from 700 to oo people.
