2 ANNUAL REPORT

Letter from the Head of School

On behalf of the entire Friends Academy community, I want to express my gratitude and deep appreciation to our generous supporters for helping to make 2021-2022 a truly wonderful school year. I am profoundly grateful to the many dedicated volunteers from every constituency across the school – parents, alumni, trustees, faculty, staff, parents of alumni, grandparents, and friends – who worked enthusiastically and tirelessly with our Advancement and Alumni Office to support all of our community events and fundraising initiatives. Our students are the beneficiaries of your care and dedication.

Your gifts are vital to maintaining Friends Academy’s excellence, and I am grateful that you made the school one of your top philanthropic priorities in 2021-2022. Our promise remains the same – to deliver to every child an exceptional and unmatched Friends Academy education. Our goals, expectations, and standards remain at the highest levels.

At Friends Academy, we continue to build on our strengths, momentum, and success. Your singular generosity to our Annual Fund resulted in a 12% parent participation increase from last year. This spring, we returned after a two-year hiatus to celebrate in person the 30th Anniversary of our Annual Dinner and Auction. The evening was electrifying as our Sponsorship and Auction Scholarship funds topped all previous years’ records. Thank you!

As we journey confidently into the 2022-23 school year, I know that together, and with your support, we will continue to build on our great success! Again, I thank each and every donor and volunteer for your ongoing commitment to Friends. I feel privileged to serve such a devoted and generous community.

ANNUAL REPORT 3

Academics

The 2021-22 school year brought new life in (and out) of our classrooms. From the resurgence of offcampus field trips to inviting mentors to the school for our pilot Entrepreneurship classes, Friends Academy students were able to take their learning to the next level through real-world experiences.

Signature Programs

Piloted in Early Childhood this year, the Forest Program is a dynamic “living outdoor lab” that provides an engaging, joyful, and rigorous education. As the only school on the North Shore of Long Island leading the way in this innovative educational space, our groundbreaking Forest Program opens the door to the natural world and will be expanded in the coming years as an all-school program. The outdoor classroom features a sensory garden, pollinator garden, and a natural swale known as the rain garden, which immerse children in a hands-on laboratory of enviromental science, conservaton, and earth care – a direct connection to our Stewardship testimony.

Signature Programs have been introduced across all three divisions this year. Originally piloted in the Upper School, the Entrepreneurial Studies program expanded this year so that students in the Lower and Middle Schools were able to participate. In the Lower School, students focus on foundational concepts such as analytical thinking and innovation, and have opportunities to work with Upper School mentors. These ideas are expanded in Middle School, where eighth-grade students study entrepreneurship for one academic quarter. During this time they engage in client interviews, design thinking, collaboration, and consultation with community nonprofit organizations. Earlier this year the students welcomed Alana Kessler, Director of Teen Services at the Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center (SJJCC)in Roslyn, to campus to pitch their ideas on how to increase teen/young adult involvement at the SJJCC.

Students in Upper School have a range of interdisciplinary problem-based semester electives to choose from. These courses are rooted in real and urgent complex problem solving and require deep collaboration with others as well as the

development and synthesis of a variety of skills, including critical thinking, research, and professional presentations. All courses require partnership with outside professionals – whether it be a business owner in Entrepreneurship, an attending physician in Solutions in Medicine, or a financial analyst in Financial Literacy. Throughout the school this year, our students brought together knowledge and skills introduced in a variety of disciplines and engaged in application, evaluation, and creation.

All-School Immersive Learning

Our students and teachers alike ventured out of the classrooms for engaging and exciting off-campus immersive learning. Almost every department had a plan to bring students on at least one field trip this past school year.

World Languages and Cultures faculty in the Upper and Middle Schools guided their students through introspective museum exhibits, encouraged their students to converse in the language being studied at restaurants and shops, and engaged in cultural activities like Chinese fan dancing to reinforce that it is equally important to learn the cultures of our neighborhood communities as well.

In the sciences, a trip that was talked about long after it was taken was Jen Newitt’s AP Biology class visit to the famous Bronx Zoo. The students were able to explore the exhibits and study the animals they have discussed in class. “The trip was fun both socially and educationally,” said Josh Sukoff ’22. “Our class was able to identify and record animal behaviors that will be used as a foundation for our last unit on ecology, all while watching cute animals with our friends.”

Arts

In the fall, a small group of Upper School students were guided by Interim Director of Theater Andrew Geha in an immersive production titled Who Are We Now Limited by COVID-19 restrictions, Mr. Geha allowed format to guide function, and creativity blossomed. After a series of workshops full of discussions, writing exercises, brainstorming, and improvisation, Mr. Geha put together a series of four-minute stand-alone acts that explored loss, perspective, emotional conflict resolution, and hope.

During the first full week of April, Middle School students took time to explore various activities and learn skills within the arts during the long-standing annual Middle School Arts Week. With morning and afternoon sessions for the 14 courses offered throughout the week, students were able to find the perfect fit for their interests. However, not all the Middle School students in the Helen A. Dolan Center were in the art or dance studios. Some students took to the stage and spent the week rehearsing for the Middle School Play. This year’s production, Myth Takes, comprises five stories about who we are and how we grow. Students also worked behind the scenes in lighting, sound, and stage crew.

In February, the Upper School theatre department once again welcomed students back on stage for the return of our first fulllength musical production since 2020 The Public Theater’s musical adaptation of Twelfth Night is William Shakepeare’s timeless 400-year-old story, which explores mistaken identity, empowerment, and love, adapted with the 2018 rousing musical score.

In the Lower School, our first graders took on the role of teachers as they worked with Playgroup students for an art lesson on self-portraits. In a lesson led by Lower School Visual Arts Convenor MaryJo Allegra, students used mirrors to see themselves and focus on their facial features such as their mouths, eyes, and hair.

Athletic Achievements

This year, we celebrated a welcome return of regularseason competition and outside spectators who cheered on Friends Academy sports teams from the sidelines with renewed Quaker spirit! New Director of Athletics and Physical Education Diana Parente launched several new initiatives, including an Upper School Student Athletic Leadership Council and compelling new social media channels devoted to FA Athletics. #RollQuakers!

BOYS BASKETBALL

After being undefeated at home, our Varsity Boys Basketball team dribbled, shot, and rebounded their way into the playoff season. The team finished the season with four championship titles and was the NYSPHSAA Class B Runner-Up. Head Coach Matthew Johnsen received the Nassau County Coach of the Year award for the fifth time in his career.

SPRING TRACK & FIELD

We had 11 athletes qualify for the NYS Division II Track and Field Championship this year who returned home with 14 medals. The combined Boys and Girls teams had five top ten finishes, including the relay team of Logan Alvarez ’24, Logan Mott ’23, Ben Martin ’23, and Jackson Brielmann ’23, who won the Boys 4x400m Relay with a new school record of 3:27.78. The boys then competed in the NYS Federation – a race that includes all public, Catholic, and independent schools – and finished 7th.

GIRLS AND BOYS SOCCER

Both teams celebrated the 10th anniversary of their 2011 State Championship wins with an inspiring ceremony at Fall Fair. Head Coaches Gail Baker and Edgar Posada invited former team members from the 2011 season to campus for the unveiling of the new turf field. This year’s Girls team finished second, capturing the Conference Champions title while the Boys team finished second in the conference.

GIRLS TENNIS

Emerging with a tie in the Small School Conference with Cold Spring Harbor, our Girls Tennis team dug deep and went on to defeat CSH in the Nassau County Small School Championship. The Girls then moved onto the Long Island Small School Championship where they beat Bellport and took home the NYS Regional Champion title as well. The team finished as the runner-up in the Small School NYS Championship. Individually, Isabella Sha ’23 earned the Nassau County Champion and finished her junior year season as 4th in New York State.

GIRLS HOCKEY

With an out-of-state game this season and a first win in program history, our Girls Hockey team had a historic season. The girls traveled over 400 miles for games and practices, and radiated positivity at every turn.

GIRLS AND BOYS LACROSSE

After their seasons came to a close, the Boys and Girls Lacrosse teams planned a scrimmage in an effort to raise awareness about mental health and the 15 For Life Foundation.

GIRLS AND BOYS GOLF

Our Girls and Boys Golf teams had impressive seasons with members from both teams representing at the NY State Championships. For golf, Section VII competes as a team. On the Girls side, eighth grader Ava Estrella finished in the top 20 and made All-State Honors. Our Boys representatives –Jack Estrella ’24 and Sean Shallat ’24 – won the state tournament and received All-State honors. Zach Shallat ’22 also received All-State honors.

Retirements

MICHAEL GRANT – 21 YEARS

Michael arrived at Friends Academy in 2001, leaving the world of professional theater to join the Upper School faculty teaching stagecraft, advising, and working behind the scenes as the technical director in the theater. Over his time at Friends, Michael has supported and collaborated on productions in all three divisions. He may have been behind the scenes, but his hard work, creativity, vision, and skill were evident during every performance on the stage for the past 20 years – each set elaborate, intricate, and awe-inspiring. One of Michael’s colleagues wrote, “As a teacher, community member, steward of the theater, and artist, you have found large and small ways to positively affect everything you are involved with.” Michael, we will miss you.

LAURIE FLEMING – 12 YEARS

With 12 years of service to Friends Academy, our other retiree is Laurie Fleming. Laurie joined the Friends Academy community as a part-time librarian in January 2011 and moved into a fulltime position in September 2011. In 2015 Laurie was appointed Interim Director of the Library and assumed the role permanently in September 2016. During her time at Friends, Laurie was the textbook coordinator and assisted with the Upper School yearbook. We all have come to depend on Laurie in the library with her calm presence, kindness, and expertise filling our shelves with wonderful literature. Laurie, our best to you as you spend time with your grandchildren and improve your tennis game.

Annual Fund

The Friends Academy Annual Fund is the most significant yearly fundraiser for the school. The Annual Fund touches the lives of each and every one of our students and positively affects them in many profound ways. Unrestricted gifts to Friends through our Annual Fund are the foundation of our giving program. Your extreme generosity resulted in unrestricted gifts totaling $1,668,665.

Gifts by Parents

The support our parents provide to Friends is a key difference maker in defining the financial health of our community. Quite simply, without it, we would not be able to create the unique experiences that distinguish and define Friends Academy. With the incredible energy and enthusiam of our Annual Fund parent volunteers, we reached 75% parent participation. Congratulations to our fourth and sixth grades for reaching 100% participation. Annual Fund Parent Volunteers

success of the Friends Academy Annual Fund is made possible through the efforts and commitment of our volunteers. Their hard work and endless energy is nothing short of inspirational. With an amazing “can do” spirit, a team of parent volunteers worked diligently to help espouse the many benefits that our students receive through unrestricted gifts to the Annual Fund. We enthusiastically thank our Annual Fund Committee led by Chair Marc Hudak and Vice Chair Aimee Roti for their incredible leadership.

Gifts from Alumni by Class

Gifts from our alumni express appreciation for the many ways in which they were positively affected by a Friends Academy education. Alumni support helps ensure that the lifelong benefits of a Quaker education combined with the uniqueness of a Friends Academy education remain accessible to our students. Our alumni play a critical role in our students’ lives by being positive role models, participating in alumni and school events, and by the many ways in which they proudly carry the FA banner.

A Night Out with Friends

Dinner & Auction

Friends Academy celebrated the 30th Annual Dinner and Auction on May 6, 2022, at the Garden City Hotel. It was wonderful being back in person after a two-year hiatus because of the COVID-19 Pandemic. As this year’s theme, “A Night Out with Friends” suggests, the event was overflowing with good cheer and celebrated the many ways in which our lives are enriched because of our Friends Academy relationships.

Liz Kakar and Liz Ong Witthuhn ’01 served as our Auction Chairs. We offer our deepest appreciation to Liz and Liz for their outstanding commitment and to the dedicated auction committee for their extraordinary service to Friends Academy. Total revenue from the evening was $884,000. Thank you for a fabulous event!
