Nikola Tesla was born in 1856 to a Serbian family in a country now called Croatia. When Tesla was young, he was able to do difficult math problems in his head. His teachers thought he was cheating. He finished high school in 3 years instead of 4.

He started college but didn’t finish. However, he learned enough to go to work. He moved several times over the next few years. Each time, he got a job as an electrician. At each workplace, he designed and improved the equipment.

NOTES

In 1884, Tesla moved to New York City. He came with a letter to Thomas Edison from one of his bosses. The letter reportedly said, “I know two great men and you are one of them; the other is this young man.”

Edison hired Tesla as an electrical engineer. He quickly became very important to the company. He solved some of its most difficult problems.

Tesla was able to picture in his mind how different methods worked.

Edison always made a lot of models and tried them out. That process took a lot longer.

In 1885, Tesla and Edison had a disagreement. Tesla told Edison he could improve some of Edison’s motors and generators. Edison told him he would pay him $50,000 if he did. This was a lot of money at that time.

Tesla worked hard. He spent months on the task. When he succeeded, he asked Edison for the money he promised to pay him. But Edison told him he had been joking. He said, “Tesla, you don’t understand our American humor.” He offered Tesla a $10 raise on his $18 weekly pay. Tesla quit the job.

Tesla started his own company in 1887. He called his company Tesla Electric Light and Manufacturing. There, he worked on making a system called “alternating current.” Its purpose was to create electricity. Thomas Edison thought his system, called “direct current,” was better and safer.

The two became rivals. Each gave talks about why his particular method was better. They had public demonstrations to show people how they created electricity. Their rivalry was called the “War of the Currents.”

Another rival of Edison’s, George Westinghouse, had also been trying to create an electrical system. He bought some of Tesla’s inventions.

Westinghouse paid Tesla $2,000 a month to work with him. Tesla spent all his money on new inventions and ideas. He invented the Tesla coil.

The coil carried electricity without wires. You can still see a Tesla coil at some museums today. Tesla invented or helped develop a long list of machines. They include X-ray machines, radios, wireless remotes, fluorescent lights, and the system of electricity that is still used today in our cities. He helped create a power plant in Niagara Falls. The power plant provided power all the way to New York City. He was given many awards and honorary degrees from universities all over the world.

Sadly, Tesla died without a cent. People forgot about him. They remembered Edison, whose companies still exist and have his name.

Consolidated Edison is the electric company that powers New York City.

In the 1990s, people started to write about Tesla. Now, he is becoming better known again. The man who started a new electric-car company named it Tesla Motors. Their first car used an 1882 Tesla design for an electric car.

The Sun’s Energy

You see the Sun every day, so you might take it for granted most of the time. However, life on Earth could not exist without sunlight. How does your life depend on the Sun’s energy? How do you think the Sun’s energy affects the oceans, weather, and other things on our planet?

Solar Radiation Radiation is a special type of energy that spreads out as it travels. The Sun gives off different types of radiation, including light and heat. Solar radiation travels throughout the solar system. However, only some of the radiation that reaches Earth penetrates our planet’s atmosphere to reach its surface. This diagram illustrates what happens to sunlight as it moves through Earth’s atmosphere.

Energy from the Sun travels very quickly: about 300,000 km/s. (This is the speed of light.)

However, solar radiation still takes some time to travel from the Sun to Earth. Earth’s distance from the Sun varies depending on Earth’s position in its orbit. However, on average, Earth is about 150,000,000 km from the Sun. As a result, solar radiation takes about eight minutes to travel from the Sun to Earth. Once this radiation reaches Earth, about 30% is reflected back into space. The remaining 70% is absorbed by Earth’s atmosphere and surface.

The Sun’s Energy Heat Transfer Processes Solar radiation lights our world as well as heats it. There are three major processes by which heat can be transferred to an object or substance on Earth. These processes are radiation, conduction, and convection. You have already learned about radiation.

Conduction is the process by which heat is transferred from one object or substance to another through direct contact. In other words, the objects touch each other to transfer heat. Conduction happens when the bottom of a pot heats up from touching a hot stove. Convection is the process by which hot material rises and cooler material sinks. When the water in a pot starts to boil, the water at the bottom of the pot, closest to the stove burner, heats up first. This hot water rises to the top of the pot because of convection. This is why you can see bubbles rolling in the pot when the water comes to a full boil.

You can see convection happening in a lava lamp.

Material at the bottom of the lamp rises as it heats up, and then sinks back down as it cools.

All three of these processes affect how solar radiation affects Earth’s temperature.

• Light and heat from the Sun are transferred to Earth through radiation.

• 70% of this radiation is absorbed by Earth’s atmosphere and surface. Some of this radiation is transferred to gases in Earth’s atmosphere through conduction. Some of it passes through the atmosphere and is transferred to rocks, water molecules, and other things on Earth’s surface. This is also conduction.

• When air molecules in the atmosphere are heated, the warm air rises, helping to further distribute heat through convection. As the warm air rises, it loses energy and cools.

Eventually, the cool air sinks back down toward Earth’s surface. This creates circular movements in the atmosphere called convection cycles.

The ground absorbs sunlight.

Convection cycles form as warm air rises, cools in the atmosphere, and sinks toward the ground. At the same time, cool air sinks, warms near the ground, and rises.

The Sun’s Energy How do you think convection cycles in the atmosphere are related to wind? Take a few minutes to think about the question, and then read on to learn the answer!

Wind Currents When a gas is less dense than another gas, the less-dense gas floats in the denser gas. For example, helium is less dense than air. When you fill a balloon with helium, the balloon rises and floats in the air. Warm air is less dense than cold air because the particles in warm air have more energy to move farther away from each other. As a result, warm air floats in cold air. Warm air rises through convection, cools, and sinks back toward Earth.

These density differences also result in differences in air pressure. Colder, denser air pushes down as it sinks and compresses, resulting in higher pressure at Earth’s surface. Warmer air spreads out as it rises into the atmosphere, resulting in lower pressure above Earth’s surface.

Different areas of Earth’s surface reflect different amounts of heat from solar radiation.

For example, sunlight strikes the equator more directly than it strikes Earth’s poles, so air over the equator is warmer than air over the poles. Local differences also affect air temperature. Dark-colored surfaces, such as pavement, absorb more radiation than lighter-colored surfaces. So, the air above a city tends to be warmer than the air above a nearby field. This differential heating of the atmosphere causes differences in air density and pressure. Differences in temperature create convection cycles as warm air rises and cold air sinks. Areas of higher air pressure move into areas of lower air pressure, pushing these air masses around.

We call these movements of air wind.

Particles of cool air sink toward Earth’s surface, creating areas of high pressure.

Particles of warm air rise into the atmosphere, creating areas of low pressure. The air pressure at the top of Mount Everest (measured in kPa, or kilopascals) is more than three times lower than the air pressure at Earth’s surface.

En la secundaria Gabrielino High School, en San Gabriel, California, por ejemplo, Dylan Rojas está a punto de graduarse con una mención honorífica en su diploma por su dominio del español y del inglés.

La distinción recibe el nombre de Sello de Alfabetización Bilingüe, y fue creada en el 2008 por el grupo de defensa Californians Together. Treinta y cinco estados, además del Distrito de Columbia, lo aplican en sus diplomas. Sin embargo, el sello es un concepto tan poco conocido que muchos estudiantes solo se enteran de que existe cuando lo reciben.

Yo pasé cinco años escribiendo un libro acerca de una secundaria en el este de Los Ángeles en la que casi ninguno de los padres contaba con un diploma universitario, pero casi todos los estudiantes eran bilingües. La escuela tenía mala reputación porque los estudiantes sacaban notas bajas en lectura y en matemáticas. Sin embargo, la capacidad de sus estudiantes de hablar dos idiomas era muy superior a la de los alumnos de cualquier escuela en las zonas pudientes de la ciudad.

There is nothing like living in hot, windy West Texas. A warm, spring day can bring gusts of 20 miles per hour or more.

Hold on to your hat, because it may blow away! The constant wind is just a way of life. The wind blows all around the world though, not just in Texas. As the wind grabs your hat, have you ever wondered what makes it blow? Where does the wind come from? Wind is air in motion. Energy from the Sun heats up the surface of Earth. Heat energy Then transfers to the air.

Think about what the surface of Earth is like. With mountains, hills, lakes, streams, canyons, and oceans, the surface is uneven. Each one of these landforms or bodies of water absorbs heat from the Sun at different rates. As a result, the air above these locations warms at different rates, too. This causes movement in the air. As warm air rises and expands, the cool air rushes in to take its place. The Sun is not only the source of energy for all living things. It is also the driving factor in creating the wind.

Wind can be a powerful form of solar energyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;energy that comes from the Sun. Wind is known as a renewable energy source. There is an endless supply. Therefore, wind may be a good alternative to use instead of fossil fuels. Independent businessmen have been taking advantage of this. Maybe you have noticed giant windmills starting to pop up in large clusters.

Harvesting wind energy is becoming a rapidly growing industry.

Wind farms are groups of windmills that are used to harness the wind. There are many wind farms all over the world, but the largest one is right here in Texas. The Horse Hollow Wind Energy Center is located in Taylor and Nolan Counties. It can produce enough electricity to power 220,000 homes per year by using 421 windmills.

Windmills work when the wind blows around the blades, causing them to turn. The windmill then converts kinetic energy, the energy of motion, from the wind into mechanical power. The mechanical power is then converted with a generator into electricity that homes and businesses can use. Windmills come in several different sizes. The largest windmill's blades are longer than the length of a football field and can stretch 20 stories high. This size can generate electricity to power 1,400 homes. The smallest windmill's blades are between 8 and 25 feet and only reach 30 feet high. This size can easily power a single home or business.

Windmill farms affect the environment in both positive and negative ways. Windmills cause little to no pollution. All anyone needs to harness the wind's power is a windmill and the wind.

Windmills can be set up in remote locations, as long as the area has a consistent wind. The more energy that comes from renewable sources like wind, the less energy we will need from fossil fuel resources. This is highly desirable because the burning of fossil fuels causes pollution and produces greenhouse gases that are bad for the environment.

Even with all of the positive impacts windmills have on Earth, there are still a few negative ones.

A major issue that wind energy faces is that the wind doesn't always blow when electricity is needed. Since wind cannot be stored, alternative power plants must also be available to be used for electricity. Another negative is that sometimes birds and bats are killed when they fly into the blades of windmills. The establishment of large fields of windmills also changes the natural habitat for all of the animals living in the area. Most of the large wind farms are built in relatively remote locations. A number of people have objected, however, because they don't like the way the windmills look. They complain that windmills are big and cumbersome. They feel these wind farms change the landscape in regions of the country that have been known for their natural beauty.

All in all, using wind energy for electricity to power homes and businesses is something worth considering. Scientists are trying to find ways to reduce the negative impacts of windmills on the environment. The positive impacts of wind energy make it an attractive energy source for the future. After all, the Sun provides energy for all living things in many ways. The Sun helps plants grow, warms Earth's surface, provides light, and makes the wind blow. The next time you feel a breeze, think about how that little gust could send power to your house.

Draw a bug that fills a 3 inch square paper. Use plenty of shape details, no plain lines.

Go over the drawing in marker. Trace several times on 8 x 10 inch or larger piece of white paper in a popcorn (random) pattern.

Color in some shapes black and leave some white.

Trace shape (square or circle for example) on large paper of “popcorned” bugs, with at least one shape overlapping each bug.

Color in the bugs on the large pattern with space reversal. Color all areas of the bug OUTSIDE the shapes the same as your positive pattern All areas INSIDE the shape should be colored in the exact opposite

Yearbook Days 11-15 Standard: (1) Foundations: observation and perception. You are keeping a journal of every day of remote learning from home.

Each day will require at least one photo and a short journal entry.

You will respond to a prompt each day and document it using your phone and a brief paragraph or couple of lines describing the photo.

Your topic: NATURE

You can keep your photos on your phone.

You can journal in a grid or calendar format or just fill pages with drawings and paragraphs, or any other way you would like. Be creative!!

In Frozen II Olaf sums up the story of Frozen using voices, songs, jokes, etc. I would like you to watch a musical of your choice and create a 1-2 minute summary of the story of the musicals.

You may make a fun video monologue like Olaf or write a ½ page to 1page summary. Include songs if you would like.
