Sports can be a lot of fun. They are also a great way to get exercise and stay healthy. But it’s important to stay safe. Here are four ways to take care of yourself while playing.

MOVE AND STRETCH. Before playing, it’s good to warm up. Go for a light jog. Learn the proper ways to stretch. This will lessen your chances of getting injured.

Plant Characteristics 2nd Grade - Week 4 Science MONDAY

Go on a Plant Hike To help your child learn more about plant characteristics, take a walk outdoors and search for plants. Look for both small plants, such as ones in pots or gardens, as well as large plants, such as trees. Be sure to point out any plants that are not native to the area and require special care to survive. Discuss with your child what would happen to that plant if a person did not care for it. As you find each plant, discuss the parts of the plant, focusing on the following: ●

The roots, which you may not be able to see at all: Point out the kind of soil the plant is in (sandy, clay-like, etc.) and talk about the environment in which you live. For example, if you live in an area with lots of rain, plants you find outside will not require a root structure that is very deep as there is ample water near the surface of the soil. If, however, you live in a dry environment, outdoor plants will need to be drought tolerant or have a deep root structure. The stem: Discuss the different kinds of stems—hard or woody stems versus soft stems. Encourage your child to think about the reasons why stems might be different. The leaves: Point out differences and similarities in the leaves of the plants that you see. Ask your child to determine whether the leaves are the same thickness. Discuss how the environment in which you live might dictate the types of leaves you are seeing.

Here are some questions to discuss with your child: 1. 2. 3.

What is the most likely root structure for plants in your area? Are they long or short? Why? Could a tree grow as tall as it does and live for years if it had a soft stem instead of a hard stem (trunk)? If you keep plants in your home, do the leaves differ from those you see outside? If so, how?

Letiâ€™s Garden 1

Motherâ€™s Day will be here soon. Leti wants to surprise her mom. She wants to make a flower garden. She finds a spot in the yard for her garden. It is a nice sunny spot.

She knows her mom loves sunflowers and roses. Her dad takes her to the garden store. They buy seeds and seedlings. When she gets home, Leti gets the soil ready for planting.

Every day after school, she comes home and waters her garden. After a few days, she sees little sprouts. They are coming up out of the ground.

Leti knows that the sunshine and water will help to grow healthy plants. The roots will soak up the nutrients from the soil. The stems of the sunflowers will need to be strong. They will need to be strong because they grow very tall!

One day when Leti comes home from school, she is surprised at how tall the plants are getting. They have buds on top of the stems. She knows the buds will soon open to become flowers.

Soon all the flowers have bloomed. Leti is proud of how tall her sunflowers are in her garden. Leti reaches out to smell the roses. Ouch! Something pokes her. The roses are beautiful and smell good, but they have thorns.

Leti is so excited about her flower garden. She decides to pick some flowers to make her mom a bouquet. Mom will be so surprised.

2nd Grade - Week 4 Fundations THURSDAY The Rescue Team Unit 15 As students read the following passage, they should not be timed. Rather than emphasizing time, emphasize reading with ease and expression for understanding. Students should read aloud to someone and practice reading at least twice. Mr. Stroub works on a rescue team on the coast. He has been working there for years. He enjoys the work and likes the other members of the group. They all know how important their work is. Back when he was a kid in school, Mr. Stroub had worked at his town pool. One day he had to save a child from drowning. From that point on, he was hooked on rescue work.

The crew does not go out on a rescue each day. Some days the job is even a bit dull. The crew is happy when this happens because it means that all of the boaters are safe. However, if a storm blows in, the crew knows they will be needed soon. It is their job to rescue boats that are stranded out in the sea and get everyone back safely to shore. They also teach classes on boat safety.

Many people on the coast have boats and enjoy fishing trips or just sailing on the clear, smooth blue waters. Most of the boaters are very careful. They remember to provide a life jacket for each person on their boat, and they go slowly when there are other boats around. A few boaters are foolish. They scoot across the water at top speed and dart around the other boats. They crowd too many people on their boats and ignore the rules. They stay out in stormy seas and pile too much stuff on the boat.

One cloudy afternoon, Mr. Stroub told a group that they should not take their small boat out to sea. The news was reporting that a large storm was expected soon. The driver of the boat began to argue with Mr. Stroub. Mr. Stroub was trying to explain that the strong winds would make it hard to get back in when the boat took off and sped out to sea. Mr. Stroub just shook his head. He wished people knew that he was not trying to spoil their fun. He just wanted to keep them safe.

Shortly after the boat left the dock, thunderclouds formed in the sky, and the waves began to pound the shore. Mr. Stroub frowned and looked out the window. He was hoping to see the small boat returning, but there were no boats around. He told his crew that they should prepare for a rescue.

Heroes are people who do something brave, unusual, or important. Heroes are men and women who take risks. They make a positive difference in the world. Some heroes lived long ago. George Washington was the first president of the United States. Some heroes did great things recently. Sally Ride was an astronaut and an educator, and the first American woman to go into space. Some of the greatest heroes did not just do remarkable things that made them famous. In their everyday lives, they behaved in ways that made people admire their character. Character is a group of qualities that make up who a person is. Heroes are often people with great character. Many people with great character are honest. Honest people tell the truth, even when it is hard to do. Someone with great character may also be compassionate. A compassionate person cares about others and works to help them. A person with great character may also be responsible. Responsible people do things they promised to do. Other people can depend on them. Heroes can combine great actions with great character. Now think: Do you have a hero?
