Ctrl by SZA Ctrl was a breakthrough for the new artist. Although she has had various singles and features with other artists, this was SZA’s first album that made it to the top five on the Billboard charts.


Cash Me Outside On a episode of Dr. Phil, aired on Sept. 10, 2016, guest Danielle Bregoli became tired of the audience laughing at her, so she angrily said “Cash me outside, how bout’ dat”. This saying went viral around early 2017. Danielle Bregoli cashed (no pun intended) in on her fame, becoming a rapper by the name of “Bhad Bhabie”.

What in Tarnation The phrase “What in Tarnation” is used to express shock or surprise. The original meme was a picture of a dog with a cowboy hat with a caption “What in Tarnation”, and it gained searches in early January. Other creators changed the word tarnation to other rhyming words and putting cowboy hats on various objects.

Roll Safe This meme gained popularity in February, and comes from the movie Roll Safe in a scene where actor Kayode Ewumi points to his temple and grins. This snapshot is accompanied by a caption that generally is a “If you can’t, you don’t” statement. This meme was extremely popular, and is still used today.

The picture that is commonly used is a man who is avoiding the floor. The captions can vary from meme to meme.

Spongebob Mocking This meme is usually seen as a picture of Spongebob and a statement with alternating capital letters, that gained popularity around May. The image of Spongebob was first aired 2012 in the episode “Little Yellow Book”. This meme shows 2 positions on a statement, with one side mocking the other with the alternating capital letters. Distracted Boyfriend The distracted boyfriend meme is a picture of a man getting distracted from his girlfriend by another girl. This meme took off around August, and became extremely popular very quickly. Variations of this meme replace the people in the picture with other things or people to make it funny.

Crash Bandicoot The Crash Bandicoot “Woah” meme originated, in a video in which Youtuber Oney was playing the Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, and saying “Woah” every time his character jumped. Then, other Youtubers animated Crash Bandicoot saying “Woah”. This meme took the internet by storm when it gained popularity in July.

Through this quest, Miguel begins to unravel the truth behind his family’s traditions and history.

Chester Bennington - Linkin Park March 20, 1976 – July 20, 2017 Chester Bennington was most known for being the lead singer of nü-metal band Linkin Park, which continues to be popular to this day. Despite the success, Bennington suffered from depression and committed suicide on July 20.

Heather Menzies-Urich - Actress December 3, 1949 - December 24, 2017 An actress best known for her role as Louisa Von Trapp in the iconic movie The Sound of Music, Menzies-Urich died of brain cancer at the age of 68. Menzies-Urich was also known for her role in the TV show Logan’s Run.


Roy Halladay - Athlete May 14, 1977 – November 7, 2017 Nicknamed “Doc Halladay”, Roy Halladay was regarded as one of the best pitchers of his time. He played for the Toronto Blue Jays for a majority of his career and spent the last three seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies. He died in a plane crash off the Gulf of Mexico.

Hugh Hefner - Magazine Founder April 9, 1926 – September 27, 2017 Dying in his mansion on September 27, Hefner was known for being the founder and editor-in-chief of the controversial magazine Playboy. Hefner had three wives and even more girlfriends, most of which were Playboy bunnies. He passed away in Los Angeles at the age of 88 after battling leukemia. Kim Jong-hyun - K-pop star, member of SHINee April 8, 1990 – December 18, 2017 A member of the popular Korean pop group SHINee, Kim committed suicide at the age of 27, joining the notorious 27 Club. Kim released 11 studio albums with SHINee, four of which peaked at #1 in Korea, as well as one solo studio album.
