OVERVIEW It was a celebration at a locked-out Fremantle Oval as Freo dominated their way to their first AFLW finals victory with a 70-point win against Gold Coast. Fremantle were a class above their opponents to record their biggest ever win and book a preliminary final against Melbourne. The big occasion saw Freo’s stars come to the fore, led by Kiara Bowers (22 disposals, 14 tackles), Ebony Antonio (20 disposals, one goal) and captain Kara Antonio (19 disposals, seven marks). Lively forwards Gabby O’Sullivan, Kate Flood, Sabreena Duffy and Gemma Houghton all got among the action with multiple goals, while Roxy Roux wouldn’t go without with a huge pack mark and a composed finish. The game was on a knife-edge with minutes to go in the opening term as Gold Coast missed a set shot from 15m that would cut the lead to two put the game to bed. OVERVIEW A locked out Marvel Stadium greeted Justin Longmuir for his first AFL game as senior coach and there was a tough introduction from Essendon as they raced out of the blocks with four opening goals. Importantly Freo steadied with goals to talls Rory Lobb and Matt Taberner but still trailed by 19 points at the opening break. Debutant Sam Sturt gave Freo life in the second term with a dream goal on debut from a tight angle on the 50m arc. The then-19-year-old continued to act as an important part of Freo’s comeback with two final-quarter goals, including his third where he outmuscled two opponents to mark and bring Freo within seven points. 2019 Brownlow Medallist Nat Fyfe led Freo with 26 disposals and 10 contested possessions, while Darcy Tucker also impressed with 23 touches and seven score involvements. Freo were left to rue the new AFL rules under Covid-19, with quarters shortened to 16 minutes plus time on. Freo kicked four of the final five goals and were left heartbroken with the ball in their forward 50 when the final siren sounded.

Darcy took his ruck work to another level in 2020, especially improving his hitouts to advantage as he worked well in tandem with the midfield. He ranked seventh in the AFL for hitouts despite missing three games and sharing the ruck duties with Rory Lobb. Most importantly, Darcy held his own as a 22-year-old in a position dominated by the games older and more experienced players. Fyfe missed three games due to a hamstring injury but still had a big impact on Fremantle’s season with a runner-up finish in the Doig Medal. When it came to his game day role, Fyfe continually put the team first as he spent more time playing forward, allowing the likes of Caleb Serong, Adam Cerra and Andrew Brayshaw to all thrive in the midfield. Despite his role, he still led Fremantle with an average of 21.4 disposals per game. As a forward, Fyfe’s ability made him a nightmare to defend which only created more space and opportunities for the rest of the forward line.

Serong made a clean sweep of all of the first-year players awards, taking out the AFL Rising Star, the AFLPA’s Best First Year Player and winning Fremantle’s Beacon Award. What was most impressive about the 19-year-old’s debut season was his ability to deliver in roles normally played by the game’s more mature midfielders. He had negating roles on some of the game’s best players and he still managed to have an impact offensively with his ability to win the footy and distribute it cleanly and quickly.
