eathrow has finally been given the green light for a third runway and unsurprisingly it is dividing opinions throughout the industry. Some propose that with Brexit

looming it is crucial that we position ourselves as a key player in the global market, and a third runway is a strong statement to support that. Others argue that we should focus on developing airports in other key regions so as to divert traffic to other parts of the UK. It’s unlikely that we will see any developments in this year or the next.

However, it's undeniable that making this strategic decision has to be a step in the right direction.

DB Cargo UK has further improved its production capabilities by opening a new wheel lathe facility in Toton and has also been awarded key accreditation from the Railway Industry Supplier Approval Scheme (RISAS) to produce powered wheelsets at its workshop in Stoke.

Both developments mean that DB Cargo UK can now service and manufacture wagon and powered wheelsets for third parties, whilst also servicing its own fleet. The new wheel lathe at Toton will also mean that DB Cargo UK can reprofile wheels on rail wagons without them having to be removed, which will provide an even quicker and more efficient service. The Stoke workshop is operated by Axiom Rail, a sister company of DB Cargo UK. The RISAS status granted at Stoke qualifies DB Cargo UK to manufacture powered wheelsets for part of its fleet, including its Class 66 locomotives, in addition to regular wagon wheelsets.

Italy, Sicily & Sardinia

Our export service operates most days from Manchester and Essex, with fixed groupage departures on Tuesday, Thursday & Friday.

Full loads can be managed any day. Our import service is daily. Whilst covering the whole of Italy, most groupage cargoes are loaded via our partner’s Milan or Verona depot, where we make upwards of 15-20 Groupage trailers per week.

Spain, the Balearics & the Canaries

Our services are extensive, around 18-20 export departures each week. We provide road freight groupage services, all capable of carrying dangerous goods.

We provide a weekly temperature controlled service every Thursday.

What goes out must come back, so all services are replicated as imports on a minimum twice-weekly service schedule.

Portugal

Offering a minimum of twice-weekly road freight groupage services to and from the primary areas of Oporto and Lisbon, we can carry part load, full load, and express consignments, including the ability to carry dangerous goods on most departures.

Greece

We operate three or four export groupage trailers each week. We provide a minimum of twice-weekly road freight groupage services both to and from Athens and Thessaloniki, each Tuesday and Friday.

France

We go direct to Southern France, delivering as much as possible directly on international trailer. This decreases transit time and also mitigates potential damages due to transhipping.

Gibraltar & Andorra

We provide regular routes into Gibraltar and Andorra. Our service to Gibraltar departs from Manchester every Tuesday and Friday. Our service to Andorra is three times per week every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

DANGEROUS GOODS EXPERTS

25% of our business is made up of the transport of dangerous goods. Many companies shy away from this niche market due to its complexity, so we find that many of our competitors make utilise our services. We are compliant in all aspects and have two on-site DGSAs.

Our purpose-built premises are on the northern fringe of Manchester close to the M60/M66 junction.

To cater for the many differences in regulations, we utilise a bespoke program designed in-house, called the HAZculator®.

This collates all IMDG and ADR data, plus Eurotunnel and other tunnel & port data, and returns correct dangerous goods descriptions, including all regulations specific to the UN number or chemical.

It also makes compatibility checks for up to 7 UN numbers, as well as checking against other non-compatible items, such as foodstuffs.

ampaigners are urging the UK Government to support EU plans to introduce carbon dioxide standards and emission reduction targets for heavy goods vehicles

(HGVs) regardless of Britain’s decision to leave the European Union.

The European Commission recommendations, which are outlined in its European Strategy for Low Emission Mobility, aim to bring HGVs into line with cars and vans and reduce carbon dioxide emissions from road transport. Campaign group Freight on Rail believes it is vital for the UK to implement similar measures to meet its climate change targets.

UK targets to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from transport will simply not be met without tackling emissions from HGVs, so the Government must not abandon its support for EU standards.

Carbon dioxide standards and reduction targets for HGVs are long overdue as truck manufacturers have failed to significantly improve truck efficiency of their own accord over the last two decades.

Standards for cars and vans have been proven to work and now it’s the turn of the road haulage industry to clean up its act.

It’s hard to picture that before the mid-1960s, cabs were still little more than basic weather protection for the driver, and many used natural wood in their design. Indeed, the reason why Volvo’s cab factory is still in the very north of Sweden in Umea, is that wood was once the base material.

In fact, when Volvo first introduced a truck way back in 1928, the cab was built around the engine and chassis. With its agricultural design it was difficult to maintain the vehicle as, in most cases, the cab had to be removed or you needed a mechanic who could work around a swing-out radiator.

Cab design has come a long way since the early days and Volvo have always been at the forefront with safety and comfort integral to design.

Finally, with today’s focus on automated or autonomous trucks, the distant future of the cab could be completely different as automation takes the place of many driver functions and the driver is somewhat ‘relegated’ to the role of custodian; only there for emergencies and the first and last minute manoeuvring into and away from a loading dock.

Perhaps the driver’s ‘space’ will be replaced with additional space for goods? Perhaps the driver will sit in a central position to accommodate both LHD and RHD countries? Perhaps tomorrow’s driver will operate the vehicle from a remote vantage point, like today’s video game operative with a joy-stick and a TV screen?

Unfortunately for road freight, enclosed transporters are more expensive to operate and have a lower vehicle capacity, promoting rail as the preferable option here. It’s notable that g-forces experienced on rail are higher than those usually experienced with road freight. Trans-Rak set the established benchmark for putting cars in containers and recommend that vehicles moved on rail are lashed and chocked in all directions.

The outdated methods of building wooden racks inside containers to maximise space utilisation are now no longer viable. The prime example of car racking systems is the R-RAK by Trans-Rak. Being made from high strength steel, the product is returned after shipping multiple cars in a container. Over the product’s lifespan of 7-10 years, the cost per movement is low compared to the wooden approach, allows for faster loading, is more secure and has been tested and certified by the leading classification societies. Forwarders see a positive return on investment over a short timescale. Various other products are attempting to emulate the success of the R-RAK by Trans-Rak using a variety of approaches and several factors must be considered when comparing systems: the price, the total loading and unloading time, the number of cars that can be loaded, the weight, the flexibility/versatility, the equipment required and the rack return rate are all important when considering the total cost.

IMPROVING FUEL EFFICIENCY

Fuel efficiency isn’t just down to the fact the vehicles are Euro 6 compliant. It’s a combination of factors including on-board telematics which assess the performance of both the vehicle and the driver. Maritime provide their drivers with industry leading continuous training, introduced in September 2016, which includes driver CPC and additional skills. Drivers are rewarded through the company’s Driver Bonus Scheme, which looks at a numbers of factors, including safe and efficient driving.

ost of the law which governs road transport emanates from Europe, so it is uncertain how the UK will be affected when it leaves the EU. What changes might

The law in this area is already complex and the UK Government must now decide whether having two regulatory systems (domestic and EU) will put too much pressure on international operators. While current rules on drivers’ hours for international operators in the UK started off as European regulations, we have adopted them into our domestic legislation. The UK also has a limited domestic driver’s hours system and some have called for a complete move over to the domestic rules for all UK operators. But whatever happens to domestic rules UK international operators will still have to comply with EU rules when on the continent.

The cabotage rules currently allow EU operators to undertake up to three paid jobs within seven days between entering and leaving the UK. UK international operators have similar rights

in other EU Member States. Cabotage accounts for just 1% of road freight activity in the UK but it is controversial - some say it enables EU operators with lower costs to undercut domestic hauliers. If the UK were to opt out of EU cabotage rules, internal journeys in the UK currently made by vehicles utilising the rules would go to domestic operators, the trade-off being that UK international operators would lose their rights to carry out more paid jobs abroad.

DRIVER SHORTAGES

The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (DCPC) is the EU standard qualification for drivers entering the industry.

This is excellent for the UK industry because it allows very easy and convenient access to a large pool of EU drivers who all share a common qualification. Migrant workers have become vital to the logistics industry as a result. Drivers from Eastern Europe in particular have done much to fill the skills gap since 2004. After Brexit, if free movement is restricted and replaced by a system of work permits, a shortage of qualified drivers is likely to push up wages, increasing costs and reducing the competitiveness of UK operators.

CONCLUSION

There are obvious challenges, especially around access to workers, but also opportunities to reduce the burden of regulation post-Brexit. So now is a critical time for the freight industry to lobby for the best possible outcome for the sector. BIFA have already indicated they will campaign to ensure the UK’s import and export trade does not become overburdened by overcomplicated trade procedures.

he Knights of Old Group are proudly supporting the Movember Foundation UK and their bid to stop men dying too young, one Mo at a time.

With a moustache boldly emblazoned on one of our Nelson Distribution vehicles and a large ‘STOP MEN DYING TOO YOUNG’ message on the rear of one of our Knights of Old trailers, the Knights of Old Group aims to encourage people to support Movember.

The month of Movember, formally known as November, sees Mo Bros across the country grow moustaches to raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention. This year we’re changing the face of men’s health by literally changing the face of our vehicle.

Movember is vitally important, it raises awareness for men’s health issues in a light-hearted way, and shows men that it’s okay to talk about their health. We hope that our ‘stache-themed vehicles will bring more awareness to Movember.
