AT THE QUARRY CHRISTMAS FREEZE FRAME OPERA

WHO WE ARE

Freeze Frame Opera is a Perth-based, not-for-profit opera company established in 2016.

Since then, FFO has produced hundreds of concerts & 15 operas. We have performed for over 50,000 people and engaged more than 150 artists. We have been nominated for 16 Performing Arts WA Awards and received 8, including 2 for Best Production.

Freeze Frame Opera celebrates, engages, inspires and encourages WA talent. We aim to make opera thrilling, engaging and relevant to all.

Freeze Frame Opera acknowledges the Whadjuk people of the Noongar Nation as the traditional owners and custodians of this beautiful land on which we are privileged to live, work, tell stories and dream.

FFO acknowledges with deep sorrow the stolen generations and the disproportionate incarceration of Aboriginal people.

FFO hopes for greater understanding and truth-telling about history and greater unity and equality for all Australians.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

Dear Supporters of Freeze Frame Opera,

2023/24 has been a pivotal year for Freeze Frame Opera. This is our eighth year of operation, and I believe has seen us transition from a newcomer/upstart/shooting star to a company recognised as part of the bedrock of the operatic and dramatic musical foundation of our wider community. While we are always agile and responsive to economic and other external pressures, Freeze Frame continues to:

• expand our schools program with funding doubled and extended for another three years by the Stan Perron Charitable Foundation, and continued support from Hawaiian.

• garner many nominations and awards for productions such as “The Little Prince” (supported by a generous grant from Arts Impact 100) and “Princess and the Showgirl”

• provide many opportunities for young singers and creatives, often accompanied by mentorship from some of Australia’s most recognised established artists

• expose the magic of opera to a broader audience through the opera truck – now nearing 500 performances in locations from front driveways, golf courses, beach carparks, aged care facilities and local government-sponsored events around the metropolitan area

• have many conversations on bringing our performances to the regions. These will start to bear fruit over the next year or so.

• produce work of the highest quality that brings contemporary relevance to the exquisite music and emotional power of opera

• put the welfare and future of WA’s emerging talent at the forefront of our plans to expand the already significant impact we make with our limited resources.

I wish to acknowledge the guidance of the Board and Patron Janet Holmes à Court AC, the amazing work of General Manager Adele Williamson and the untiring contribution of Founder and Artistic Director Harriet Marshall.

Thank you to Kerrie-Anne King, Treasurer and Chair of the Finance and Risk Committee, Deborah Attard-Portughes and Liz Perrott for steering the Community Relations Committee, Sara van den Hoogen for her secretarial input, and Peta Gourlay for her assistance with grant applications. Laurie Shervington has been of great assistance on all matters legal.

So many others support our journey, including donors large and small and the many volunteers who help us keep opera affordable. Thank you also to the established artists who contribute their time and experience, including Sara Macliver, Tommaso Pollio, Penny Shaw, Jerry Reinhardt and many others.

In addition to the organisations mentioned above, the ongoing support of the Stan Perron Charitable Foundation, WAAPA (especially Emma Matthews), UWA, and Stantons (our auditors) are gratefully acknowledged. The Department of Local Government Sport and Cultural Industries assisted with much needed organisational funding to support our permanent staff of less than one FTE (full time equivalent employee).

We have an exciting program conceptualised for 2025, which, with your continued support, will further expand our contribution to the vibrancy and quality of life in our community. Thank you one and all.
