Christmas in the Barrio Ricadel C. Lim Editor-in-Chief

All throughout the world, Christmas is widely celebrated by Christians, commemorating the birth of Jesus. Celebrities even go abroad to celebrate it. And whilst flashing a huge smile with a bottle of wine, they take pictures and share those snaps in their Instagram, showing off how happy they are to celebrate Christmas in a foreign land. Sure it is amazing to celebrate it out of the country and who would prefer to stay and have a Christmas in an old-astale Barrio? Well, I would! I wonder if other countries make Tinubong during Christmas. Have they ever felt the thrill of watching how puto bumbong is cooked right in front of their eyes after a Rooster Mass? Have they even experienced clapping stones, and striking hard improvised drums just to sing with a beat the very popular Filipino song of the time, Ang Pasko ay Sumapit? Have they felt that unfathomable happiness upon seeing how thankful children are for the five-peso coin they receive in exchange for three jingles they sing in jumbled lyr-

ics? I hope they have, because these are all melting. They also said that it is the season to be jolly. In Barrio, it is the season of reunion and wide tongue-wagging of the family as they share how each is doing, while preparing food, and while children play around. Extended family members also come to celebrate the birth of Jesus, bringing with them their own freshly cooked spaghetti, lumpiang shanghai, macaroni salad, pancit, and stories, ready to be told when they eat Noche Buena together on Christmas Eve. Not to mention that gifts are enlisted to December tight budget—and whatever it is, Filipinos are always delighted to give and receive gifts wrapped into red or green shimmering paper. I would never trade a Barrio Christmas over luxurious celebration. It is the time of the year we all wish to never end. The time of the year where enemies reconcile, strangers become acquaintance, and frowns turn to laughter. So you see, Christmas in Barrio never gets old.

RC-Narvacan lifts Christmas spirit To keep the spirit of Christmas alive amid the global health crisis, the Rotary Club of Narvacan had its annual gift-giving activity last December 10, 2021, at Narvacan, Ilocos Sur. They distributed gift packs containing food and medicines to daycare children from various barangays of Narvacan, Ilocos Sur. Through this activity, RC Narvacan showed the children how they value their role in the community. The act of giving also supports the development of commitment and dedication to the children’s uniqueness and purpose. Having a strong sense of life purpose is an important dimension of life, providing these children with a sense of vitality, motivation, and resilience — and helping to contribute to better health overall. The primary purpose offers definite emotional, psychological, and physical benefits to the children beneficiaries as well as their respective families.
