Simone and Isabella Clements Leedeman are twin sisters, currently in their senior year at Freestyle Academy and Mountain View High School. At school, Simone enjoys working with many different programs to create artwork and music. She loves animals, specifically dogs, and hopes to one day have a successful career working with dogs while still creating music. Isabella has many passions in the creative field including animating, drumming and drawing. In her spare time she enjoys gardening, and both listening and creating music. She hopes to one day become a successful animator and musician.

Rogue is a curious German Shepherd who loves to explore, but one day runs away from home and gets lost! Join her adventure as she encounters many friends on her journey home, and learns a lot about working dogs in the process!

This exciting story teaches children about man’s best friend!

From the different jobs they have to help people, to even about pups in TV and history. Along with learning about their different jobs, this book is full of interesting facts about our four-legged friends, and includes tips for young children about how to approach dogs, and how to act around service dogs.

Rogue’s Great Big Adventure is a fantastic and interesting way for kids to learn more about some of the awesome things that our canine companions do!

My name is Peewee! Did you know that dogs are in movies and TV? They have been on screen since the first films were created! All kinds of dogs, even some are animated!

Yes! Thank you, I’m glad you could tell! I am working to help my owner get well. She’s upset right now, and as you can see, she needs a little extra help from me.

No, I am not. I’m a service dog, and I do quite a lot! I am trained to help my owner do things she cannot. I help her with tasks, each one of them needed. I am here to help her until they are completed.

Hello to you too! This is a statue of Balto, a famous dog, it’s true!

He led his team to bring medicine to a town full of sick people who all had the flu. After this journey, he went down in history, all because of his bravery, along with many other hounds from long ago, who were much like him, although not all them trekked through the snow.

Oh young pup, there’s so much to tell you.

Amazing Pups in History!

Bobbie the Wonder Dog:

Bobbie was a wonder pup, known for traveling far and wide. He was with his family in Indiana when he got lost in the countryside! He ran and ran to find his way back home, 3,000 miles is how far he roamed! From Indiana to Oregon, he’s known for his journey, Bobbie the Wonder Dog will always be remembered in history!

Chips:

Chips was a war dog in the US Army, he helped fight in World War II. He spent 4 years with soldiers, where he took down bad guys too. He helped the humans so much, he was known for his bravery and might. He was awarded the highest medals after the war, all because of his bite!

Hachiko:

Hachiko was a dog from Japan, known for being the most loyal in the land. He waited for his owner even after the man died, Hachi stayed at the same train station to be by his side.

Barry:

Barry was a big dog breed! He was known for doing some very good deeds. He worked, did his job in Saint Bernard Pass, high in the mountains all covered in grass. In the winter, the peaks are covered in snow, which meant it was time for Barry to go! He helped people that were trapped down below, buried or lost inside of the snow. He sniffed out and rescued so many others, even carried a boy and brought him back to his mother. He saved many people, he was a rescue dog indeed, Barry went down in history!

Laika:

From Russia, she became famous for‌. being the first pup ever to soar! She took a trip orbiting Earth, she made her way around. She was truly an incredible hound! And in her spacecraft named Sputnik 2, she made a scientific break through! It was 1957, and she started out as a stray, and no one expected for her to make such a difference today. Now because of her, we can travel to space, and learn more about it, it’s an awesome place!

Breed: German Shepherd Age: 4 years old Rogue is the pet of the authors of this book! She loves to go on adventures, and especially loves going to the beach.

He loves treats, and hanging out with his handler Carol Johnson, who works at a high school in Mountain View, California. He goes to work with her and sits at her desk every day, and loves meeting and making new friends with students. Ever since he was little puppy, his favorite thing to do is sleep in cardboard boxes!

Percie:

Breed: Golden Retriever Age: 4 years old Percie is a service dog who helps her owner Claire with things she can’t do on her own every day. Vinnie:

Breed: German Shepherd Age: 2 years old Vinnie is a shelter dog currently at the Humane Society of Silicon Valley. He is still waiting to ďŹ nd his forever home, and has been in the shelter for over 2 months. He is a very sweet and happy dog, and though he is really big, he is cuddly with an even bigger heart. He loves to go on walks and explore, and his favorite thing to do is roll in the grass and run around.

Kiah:

Breed: American Pitbull Terrier Age: About 5 years old Kiah is a pitbull who had a rough start. She was badly hurt by someone before getting to a shelter in Texas, and she was scared. Brad Croft, who works for UniversalK9 to train police dogs and officers, met her and knew that he wanted to train her too. So he worked with her, and though it was hard at first, she became a fast learner and after 8 weeks, she was ready to work. Brad worked with the Animal Farm Foundation, an organization which helps to rescue and rehome animals, to place Kiah and 20 other rescue Pitbulls like her in police departments across the country! She now works in New York at the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department alongside her partner, Officer Justin Bruzgul, and helps to find illegal things and missing people.

Rogue’s Guide to Dog Body Language!

Here is a guide to know what a pup might be feeling based on their body language, which can help you decide if you should approach him/her. If the dog seems ok to approach, follow these tips: always ask the owner before you pet, stay calm, let the dog come to you, and pet them gently on their back, stroking towards their tail.

Rogue’s Guide to Service Dog Ettiquite

DO:

When you spot a dog wearing a special vest, follow these tips! ASK before you ACT, and always be respectful of the jobs different service dogs have!

DON’T:

+ Be polite and respectful when you see a service dog!

- You should not ask why a person needs a Service Dog.

+ Please try to ignore the service dog! This may be hard, (because we all know dogs are the best) but the pup will be happier if they can focus on doing their job and helping their owner.

- Let the dog do their job so try not to distract them! Petting them without permission from their owner, talking to them, making noises, barking, running and screaming can distract them. They have a job to do, and the owner might get hurt if the pup can’t focus.

+ If you would like to ask a question about the amazing work that specific Service Dog does, ask the handler. + Always ask permission before petting any dog.

- Ask the owner before giving any food to the dog. Our four-legged friends have allergies too, you don’t want to accidentally give them something that might hurt them.
