CUTTING

WOF = Width of Fabric

From Fabric A, cut:

(3) 3" x WOF for side border

(2) 3" x WOF; subcut

(2) 3" x 381⁄2" for top/bottom border

From Fabric B, fussy cut:

(2) 6" x WOF; subcut

(12) 51⁄2" wide x 6" high rectangles, fussy cut around the motif

1/2”

From Fabric C, cut:

(5) 2" x WOF; subcut

(5) 2" x 331⁄2" sashing strips

(6) 2" x WOF; subcut

(16) 2" x 11" block sashing strips

From Fabric D, E, H, and I, cut from each:

(2) 21⁄2" x WOF; subcut

(3) 21⁄2" x 91⁄2"

(6) 21⁄2" x 6"

(1) 31⁄2" x WOF; subcut

(3) 31⁄2" x 91⁄2" for pocket backs

From Fabric F, cut:

(2)* 53⁄8" x WOF; subcut

(12)*53⁄8" x 53⁄8", then cut in half once on the diagonal into (24) triangles for pocket flaps

* Hand embroidery is recommended for ease of construction, but if you prefer to machine embroider numbers on pocket flaps, first make a test flap following step 1 to determine if you first need to add stabilizer to the wrong side of the flap fabric, or if the fabric should be machine embroidered before constructing flaps. If so, mark number placement carefully before embroidering and cutting pieces.

From Fabric G, cut:

(3) 6" x WOF; subcut

(12) 6" x 91⁄2" for pocket fronts

(6) 21⁄2" x WOF for binding

INSTRUCTIONS

Use an accurate 1⁄4" seam allowance, sew with pieces right sides together unless stated otherwise, and press after each seam.

1 Fold the Fabric F triangles right sides together and sew a 1⁄4" seam down the short side as shown. Turn right side out and press flat to make a Flap Unit. Make 24 total. Topstitch around the short sides as shown using matching thread. Embroider each Flap Unit with numbers 1-24 in the center of each Flap, aligned as shown, using your preferred stitching method. (Fig. 1)

1

2 Fold each Fabric G 6" x 91⁄2" rectangle in half wrong sides together widthwise, so the folded piece measures 91⁄2" wide x 3" high. Press the fold, then edgestitch just below it using matching thread, to make a total of 12 Pocket Fronts.

3 Measure 43⁄4" from one side and draw a vertical line down the center using a removable fabric pen on each Pocket Unit. (Fig. 2)

2

4 Place a Fabric G Pocket Unit on top of each Fabric D, E, H, and I 31⁄2" x 91⁄2" rectangle, both right side up, making sure the fold is at the top. Align the raw edges of both rectangles at the bottom and sides and baste around those 3 sides 1⁄8" from the raw edges. Change your stitch length back to normal, change your top thread if desired, and topstitch the marked center line, making sure to backstitch at the top to secure the pocket for when it is filed with treats! (Fig. 3a)

5 Refer to the table below to pair 2 embroidered Flap Units with a unit from the previous step, based on the fabric used for the pocket back (all the pocket fronts are Fabric G). Align the raw edges of both Flap Units at the top long edge of the unit, with the lower number always on the left. Baste together at the top 1⁄8" from the raw edges, making sure not to catch the top edge of the pocket front in the basting, to make a total of 12 Double Pocket Units. Label as listed below for easier block assembly. (Fig. 3b)

7 Sew an A1 Double Pocket Unit to the bottom edge of the B1 Block Center Unit, making sure to capture the basted raw edges of the pocket flaps in the seam. Press towards the bottom of the block. Note that the pocket back fabric should match the outer fabric used in the Block Center Unit. Repeat to join A2 to B2, etc, to make 12 unique blocks (91⁄2" x 11" including seam allowance). Remove any visible basting stitches. (Fig. 5)

Fig. 5

Flap raw edges will be captured in seam. Reach under aps to access pockets. Calendar Block Make 12 unique blocks.

QUILT TOP ASSEMBLY

8 Refer to the Quilt Layout diagram on page 7 to arrange Blocks 1 – 12 in 4 rows of 3 blocks each, with a Fabric C 2" x 11" sashing strip between each block and on each end of the rows. The embroiderd flap numbers should start at 1 at the upper left corner and end at 24 at the bottom right corner.

9 Sew the blocks and sashing strips into rows, pressing towards the sashing.

10 Sew the rows together with a Fabric C 2" x 331⁄2" sashing strip between each row, and on the top and bottom of the quilt center.

11 Sew together the remaining Fabric A 3" x WOF strips end to end. Cut (2) side borders 50" long (or the length of your quilt center).

12 Sew the Fabric A 3" x 50" borders to the left and right sides of the quilt top, matching ends and centers. Press towards the border, then sew the Fabric A 3" x 381⁄2" borders to the top and bottom to complete the quilt top. Press in the same direction.

Countdown Calendar Quilt

FINISHING

13 Sew together the 21⁄2" Fabric G binding strips end-to-end. Press seams open. Press the binding strip in half wrong sides together.

14 Layer backing (wrong side up), batting, and quilt top (right side up). Baste the layers together and quilt as desired. Trim excess batting and backing even with the top after quilting is completed.

15 Leaving an 8" tail of binding, sew the binding to the top of the quilt through all layers matching all raw edges. Miter corners. Stop approximately 12" from where you started. Lay both loose ends of binding flat along quilt edge. Where the loose ends meet, fold them back on themselves and press to form a crease. Using this crease as your stitching line, sew the two open ends of the binding right sides together. Trim seam to 1⁄4" and press open. Finish sewing binding to quilt.

16 Turn the binding to the back of quilt and hand-stitch in place.

TOP ASSEMBLY

5 Sew the blocks together into rows, referring to the Quilt Layout Diagram (page 6) for block placement. Press even rows right and odd rows left. Sew the rows together to complete the quilt top. Press rows down.

6 Sew the Fabric E 2" x 481⁄2" strips to the left and right sides of the quilt, matching ends and centers. Press towards Fabric E, then sew the Fabric E 2" x 431⁄2" strips to the top and bottom. Press towards Fabric E.

Sew the Fabric F 51⁄2" x 511⁄2" strips to the left and right sides of the quilt top, matching ends and centers. Press towards Fabric F, then sew the Fabric F 51⁄2" x 531⁄2" strips to the top and bottom. Press towards Fabric F.

FINISHING

8 Sew together (7) Fabric G 21⁄2" bias binding strips end to end using diagonal seams. Press seams open. Press the binding strip in half wrong sides together and set aside until quilt is ready for binding.

9 Once the top is complete it is ready for quilting! Quilts can be sent out for longarm quilting or you can quilt it yourself. If you are sending the quilt out, it is important to discuss backing and batting requirements with the quilter to ensure they have everything needed to properly finish the quilt.

10 If quilting yourself and using 44" fabric for backing, choose your favorite method for piecing (taking time to remove selvedges), then layer, baste and quilt. Once finished, trim excess batting and backing and bind according to your favorite method.

11

To complete binding by hand, it must first be machine sewn to the quilt top. Leaving an 8" tail of binding, sew binding to top of quilt through all layers, matching raw edges. Miter corners. Stop approximately 12" from where you started. Lay both loose ends of binding flat along quilt edge. Where the two loose ends meet, fold each side back on themselves and press to form a crease. Using this crease as your stitching line, sew the two open ends of the binding together right sides together. Trim seam to 1⁄4" and press seam open. The binding will naturally fold, wrong sides together, and lay along the quit edge. Finish sewing binding to quilt. Turn and press the binding to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place.

12

If machine binding, complete the steps above only attach the binding to the BACK of the quilt, turn and press to the front of the quilt and machine stitch in place.

CUTTING

• Please check https://freespiritfabrics.com for pattern updates prior to starting the project.

• All strips are cut across the width of fabric (WOF) from selvage to selvage edge unless otherwise noted.

LOF = Length of Fabric WOF = Width of Fabric

Fabric A, cut:

(1) 4½" x LOF for Border 4 (left) - Cut this strip first!

(1) 4½" x WOF for Border 4 (bottom)

(1) 4½" square

Fabric B, cut:

Trim panel to 23" x 34½", center on image

Fabric D, cut:

SEWING

Notes:

• All seam allowances are ¼" (0.64cm). Sew pieces with right sides together.

• Press seam allowances open unless otherwise indicated.

• Follow the Quilt Layout Diagram (page 6) while assembling the quilt top.

1 For Border 1 sew (1) 1½" x 34½" Fabric F strip to the left and right sides of the panel. Press seams toward borders. Sew (1) 1½" x 25" Fabric F strip to the top and bottom of the panel. Press as before.

2 To attach Border 2, measure the vertical length of the quilt top through the center and cut (2) 2" x WOF Fabric D strips the length of that measurement. Sew to the left and right sides of the quilt top. Press seams toward borders. Measure the width of the quilt top through the center. Cut (2) 2" x WOF Fabric D strips the length of that measurement and sew one to the top and one to the bottom of the quilt top. Press as before.

3 Repeat Step 2 with the remaining 1½" Fabric F strips to add Border 3.

4 For Border 4 (Left & Right Sides) measure the vertical length of the quilt top through the center and trim the 4½" x LOF Fabric A strip to the length of that measurement. Sew the Fabric A strip to the left side of the quilt center. Trim (1) 4½" x WOF Fabric C strip to the same length as the Fabric A strip. Sew the Fabric C strip to the right side of the quilt center. Press both seams toward borders.

5 To prepare Border 4 (Top) sew the 4½" Fabric A square to the left end of the remaining 4½" x WOF Fabric C strip. Note the orientation of the Fabric A square! Press away from the square. Sew this strip to the top of the quilt center. Trim the excess even with the right edge of the quilt. Sew the second 4½" x WOF Fabric A strip to the bottom of the quilt. Trim the excess even with the right edge of the quilt and press as before.

FINISHING

6 Sew together the (5) 2½" x WOF Fabric E binding strips end to end using diagonal seams. Press seams open. Press the binding strip in half with wrong sides together and set aside until quilt is ready for binding.

7 Once the top is complete it is ready for quilting! Quilts can be sent out for longarm quilting or you can quilt it yourself. If you are sending the quilt out, it is important to discuss backing and batting requirements with the quilter to ensure they have everything needed to properly finish the quilt.

8 If quilting yourself and using 44" fabric for backing, choose your favorite method for piecing (taking time to remove selvages), then layer, baste and quilt. Once finished, trim excess batting and backing and bind according to your favorite method.

9 To complete binding by hand, it must first be machine sewn to the quilt top. Trim seam to 1/4" and press seam open. The binding will naturally fold, wrong sides together, and lay along the quit edge. Finish sewing binding to quilt. Turn and press the binding to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place.

10 If machine binding, complete the steps above only attach the binding to the BACK of the quilt, turn and press to the front of the quilt and machine stitch in place.
