The mission of the Freeport Park District is to promote the use of recreation in generating an exciting, dynamic quality of life by providing the highest quality facilities and programs to meet the ever-changing needs and interests of individuals of all ages and abilities. Residency Policy
For purposes of registering for a Freeport Park District program, renting a District facility or purchasing a District service at the resident rate, the individual’s primary residence must be within the Freeport Park District boundaries. Any owner of real estate within the boundaries of the Freeport Park District and paying taxes to the Freeport Park District, but residing outside the boundaries of the Park District, shall receive the resident rate, as will his immediate family. Immediate family defined as spouse and/or children residing with property owner. Proof shall be required in the form of property tax bill and photo identification.
Gift Certificates
Freeport Park District gift cards are great for any occasion and can be used towards recreation program registrations, season passes, facility rentals and admissions. Gift cards can be purchased for any denomination and quantity. To purchase a gift card, please visit the Freeport Park District Administration Center or call us at 815-235-6114 ext. 0.

Photo Policy
Occasionally, Park District staff may videotape, or photograph participants enrolled in programs, classes, events or enjoying park facilities. These photographs are for Park District publications, flyers, brochures and future promotional materials. All photos and videos taken on Park District property are for Park District use and become its sole property.
Financial Aid
The Freeport Park District recognizes the need within our community to provide assistance to residents who do not have the financial resources to participate in the fee-based services we provide. Financial Aid is available for Freeport Park District residents who meet the District’s Financial Aid program guidelines. Financial Aid Guidelines and Application are available at the Freeport Park District Administration Center.

Public Nuisance Regulations
The Freeport Park District is committed to operating our parks in a safe and secure manner. A Motor Vehicle which is used in violation of Sound Amplification Systems, Window Obstructed Vision, Curfew Violation, Required Liability Insurance, Underage Possession of Alcoholic Liquor, Unlawful Possession of Drugs, Unlawful Possession of Weapon, Fleeing or Attempting to Elude Police Officer shall be declared a public nuisance and a threat to public safety.
Freeport Parks Foundation
The Freeport Parks Foundation is a not-for-profit organization created to provide resources beyond conventional public funding to enrich and enhance the Freeport Park District. The Foundation is fully committed to assisting the Freeport Park District reach its full potential in terms of land acquisition, facility enhancement, parks beautification, and programming. This collaborative event is hosted by the City of Freeport and Freeport Park District. Kiwanis Kids students from local elementary schools will gather in Krape Park to learn about trees and help plant them. Interactive stations will be set up in the Gunkel Shelter led by Master Gardeners from the University of Illinois Extension. Bruce Cubberley, Superintendent of Parks & Natural Resources is a certified arborist and will guide tree planting. The public is welcome to attend.

Oakdale Nature Preserve Park
Take in the spectacular scenery at the Autumn Leaf Run. It’s open to all ages and all skill levels of runners, walkers and nature enthusiasts. The 5K trail winds through diverse terrain including wide tree-lined trails, moderate hills, prairie areas, bridge crossings and several single-track trail sections. The start and finish lines will be in close proximity and the race will be timed using a chip timing system. All proceeds go to the Freeport Parks Foundation to help fund upcoming projects at Oakdale Nature Preserve Park.

Read Park Ice Rink
Weather permitting, ice skating and hocky are available at the regulation sized, outdoor ice rink located in Read Park adjacent to the Family Aquatic Center. The rink is for shared use for general skating and ice hockey and it is lighted for night time use. When skaters are present, hockey is restricted to west side of the ice rink.
Krape
This popular slope is located next to the Koenig Amphitheater in Krape Park. Patrons are required to follow the posted guidelines. To protect this green space, patrons should not use the sled hill when it is closed.
Enjoy outdoor winter activities that are low impact and cardio pumping. Oakdale Nature Preserve Park and Krape Park are great locations for hiking as well as other winter sports. Please observe trail rules and etiquette.

Feel the exhilaration! Experience the thrills at Six Flags Great America with over 17 impressive roller coasters and a variety of spectacular shows. All children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Youth ages 14+ can register without a parent and will be supervised by the chaperones provided. Fee includes entry ticket and bus ride. Participants must bring their own money for food and souvenirs. Food and non-alcoholic beverages are allowed on the bus.
Bring the whole family, we’re headed to Chicago’s Navy Pier. It’s your day and all up to you. On the pier, you can ride the 15-story Ferris wheel, catch a movie at the IMAX Theatre, play at the Chicago Children’s Museum or rent a bike and enjoy the lakefront. Another option is to take a taxi and dine, shop and explore Michigan Avenue. Fees include round trip bus transportation. Additional activities are at the cost of the participant.

FaLaLa! Enjoy the holiday decorations and shopping in Chicago without the hassle of driving there. We’ll drop you off right in the heart of the Magnificent Mile where you can shop, see the lights and explore unique cuisines. Payment is due at the time of registration.

Introduction to Water Skills - Participants will learn to enter and exit water safely, float on front and back, submerge underwater, exhale underwater, explore swimming on front and back, follow basic water safety rules, and submerge to pick up objects underwater.

Fundamental Aquatic Skills - Participants will build on skills learned in Level 1 and learn to tread water, explore swimming on side, perform rhythmic breathing, glide on front and back, rollover front to back, and swim on front and back using combined strokes.

Swim Lessons - Level 3
Stroke Development - Participants will build on skills learned in Level 2 and learn to jump into deep water, dive from sitting or kneeling position, bob with head fully submerged, perform rotary breathing, survival float, swim front crawl, swim back crawl, perform butterfly kick and body motion, perform HELP and huddle positions, perform reaching assists, and use Check-Call-Care in case of an emergency.
Stroke Improvement - Participants will build upon skills learned in Level 3 and learn to dive from compact or stride position, swim underwater, perform feetfirst surface dive, coordinate butterfly, swim breaststroke, swim elementary backstroke, swim on side using scissors kick, perform open turns on front and back, tread water using sculling arm motions and kick, use safe diving rules, and perform throwing assists.
If you are looking for more individualized swim instruction, private swim lessons are available at the Read Park Family Aquatic Center. Private lessons are available for any level of swimmer age 3 and older. Swim Lessons - Level 5
Stroke Refinement - Participants will build upon skills learned in Level 4 and further refine the front crawl, back crawl, sidestroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and elementary backstroke. Participants will also learn to shallow dive and begin swimming, tread water with two different kicks, survival swimming, tuck and pike surface dives, front flip turn, backstroke flip turn, and rescue breathing.
Swim Lessons - Level 6
Swimming and Skill Proficiency - Participants will further refine all six strokes to perform them with greater ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over longer distances.
Designed for parents and tots ages 4 and under. This class will introduce your child to the pool in an interactive and fun atmosphere. Parent is required to be in water with child at all times.

For good swimmers who are comfortable in deep water. This two-week course develops strength, flexibility and confidence while learning basic dives off a one-meter springboard. Emphasis is placed on safe diving.
Designed for the non-swimmer, you will be introduced to water safety, survival float, front crawl skills and other basic strokes.
This program is designed for the soon-to-be swimmer who is ready to explore the water without a parent, but not ready to participate in level 1 swim lessons. Classes will be kept to a minimum 1 to 3 instructor/participant ratio.
Freeport Park District is looking for lifeguards to work at the Read Park Family Aquatic Center, May – August. All lifeguards are required to be certified through the American Red Cross. If you are reliable, attentive, and comfortable

Junior Group Golf Lessons include the basics and fundamentals of the golf swing. Location: Park Hills Golf Course
Learn the fundamentals of chess while improving concentration and strategic thinking. Students will also learn how to make faster decisions, evaluate alternatives, and explore multiple ways to win through guided instruction as well as having opportunities to play other opponents. All ages welcome.

This class provides a solid foundation to build skills and understand stance. Instruction includes hand-eye-coordination, racket skills, and stroke production with emphasis on ground strokes, serves, returns, and volleys. Toddlers will enjoy making crafts, listening to stories and exploring the outdoors. Join us at Krape Park for an adventurous play day. Dress for mess and wear tennis shoes. Location: Krape Park, Flagstaff Playground Shelter
Play this popular strategy game while getting helpful pointers from an expert, all for free. Chess improves concentration, problem solving, and strategic thinking — plus it’s fun! All ages welcome. Location: Krape Park Koenig Shelter
T-ball is one of the Freeport Park District’s most popular instructional program. The 4-week program will focus on basic fundamentals. Participants will learn hitting, fielding, throwing, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Location: Read Park Ball Fields

Master Sung Sop An and his black belt staff from the Rockford Academy instruct all classes. The Rockford Academy is World Tae Kwon Do Federation licensed, which means that each student’s belt level will be recognized anywhere in the world.
The Freeport Park District does not require you to purchase any additional equipment to participate in martial art classes. However, if you would like to move up in the rank/belt system additional equipment, uniform, and testing fees will be determined by your instructor. Participation in competitions outside of the class will require additional registration and equipment fees.
Join Master Sung Sop An and his black belt staff for Little Ninjas classes. This program is designed to teach 4 to 12-year olds the important qualities of respect, self-control, confidence while improving motor skills and coordination. Location: Krape Community Building
Tae Kwon Do teaches children to respect themselves and others based on five principles: courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and indomitable spirit. Studies show that students that participate in martial arts programs often perform better in school. Location: Krape Community Building
Adult Group Golf Lessons include 5 lessons and 1 playing lesson on the golf course. Lessons cover all the basics and fundamentals of the golf swing. Also included is a coupon for (4) 9 hole green fees with a cart.

16” Softball for players 30+ years of age, will be played May - August. Teams are allowed to have two team members on roster that are under age 30. There are no official umpires for this league. The umpire will be member of batting team. A mat will be used to call balls and strikes.

Pickleball is a popular paddle sport that can be enjoyed by all ages and skill levels. It combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. The rules are simple, and the game is easy to learn. Tai Chi Chuan is a gentle form of exercise for relaxation. Tai Chi can help reduce stress and physical aches while keeping your system strong. Researchers have found that long-term Tai Chi practice has favorable effects on balance, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness. Wear loose fitting clothing and tennis shoes and bring plenty of water. Location: Krape Community Building
Introduction to kayaking is for the beginner paddler. This class is the first step in becoming a solid kayaker by focusing on basic skills, knowledge, safety, and fundamentals. No prior experience or equipment required for this class. Participants must be at least 18 years of age.

Basic Tree Identification
Learn how to identify trees. Get to know the common trees you see in local preserves or in your neighborhood. In this course, you will learn how to ID a tree through characteristics such as leaves, bark, branches, flowers, and fruit. Location: Mogle Center, Oakdale Nature Preserve Park
Bird Identification
The trick to identifying birds is knowing which details are key to confirming the species. But you need to know what to look for first! Bird identification starts with a simple road map. With practice, you will understand the parts of a bird that will lead to an ID. Location: Mogle Center, Oakdale Nature Preserve Park
Basic Plant Identification
This class provides the fundamentals you need to get started identifying plants in Illinois. Learn the characteristics of plants such as leaves, stems, flowers and fruit to help identify plants. Location: Mogle Center, Oakdale Nature Preserve Park
Wildlife Identification
This class provides the fundamentals you need to get started identifying wildlife in Illinois. Learn the characteristics of animals such as shape, size, coloring, and other distinguishing features. Location: Mogle Center, Oakdale Nature Preserve Park
Northlands Association for Special Recreation (NASR) is a cooperative partnership between the Rockford, Freeport and Belvidere Park Districts (referred to as a member district). NASR programs are open to any individual with disability-related special needs such as physical, mental and developmental disabilities and persons with mental illness, behavior disorders, and visual and hearing impairments.

Get your bat and glove ready! Summer is almost here, and it’s time for Special Olympics Softball. Join the team and get ready for an action packed summer. Please wear athletic shorts and shoes to all practices and games. Athletes must have a current Special Olympics medical application valid through September 2023. Get ready to strike it big! Join us as we practice to improve our bowling in preparation for the Special Olympics Bowling Tournament. Participants must bowl at least 12 games at practice to compete in the District tournament. Participants must have a current Special Olympics Medical Application on file through December 2023. If you like water, this is the sport for you! Work with trained swim instructors to improve your overall performance. Practice swim strokes, starts, turns, and the overall rules of competition. This program is great exercise and is gentle on the joints, making it possible for most everyone to participate. The 18-hole course is located in the Flagstaff area of the park and uses the area’s natural terrain for a picturesque yet challenging disc golf experience. The game is a cross between frisbee and golf. Each hole is approximately 300 feet long and begins with a “drive” from a tee and ends with a “putt” into an elevated basket. The course is open year-round.

Freeport Park District facilities are very popular for gatherings such as reunions, picnics, weddings and other group functions. Outdoor shelters and picnic areas are available on a first come, first served basis to the general public unless reserved and paid for through the District’s Facility Rental & Reservation process. Rental/Reservation Policies
A $100 deposit is required for all indoor facility rentals and is due at time of reservation purchase. Your deposit will be forfeited if you do not return the key, if there is any damage, or if excessive cleanup is required.
Reservations can only be made within each calendar year. A $50 surcharge will be added to your rental fee for all reservations outside the current calendar year up to 1 year in advance. An additional fee of $100 will be charged to groups of 150 or more utilizing a Park District facility.
Non-profit organizations planning to conduct fundraisers on Freeport Park District property must apply for a permit at the Administration Center in Read Park. If the organization is not renting a facility or paying a user fee, the organization will pay a flat rate of $50. Facility Rental/Cancellation Policies
If your group must cancel a reservation, the following policy is in effect:

• Park Sites shall be open to the public from dawn until dusk, or as posted (Class C).
• Pedestrians and bicyclists always have the right of way over motor vehicles. (B)
• Park patrons may feed the white domesticated ducks in Krape Park. Feeding wild ducks and geese or any other wild animal is prohibited. (D)
• Under no circumstances are temporary signs, balloons or any other items to be pinned, stapled or otherwise attached or placed on any tree, park sign or along the roadway. This action will be considered littering. (C)
• Motor vehicles are restricted to roadways, parking lots or designated parking areas only. Vehicles are not permitted on park walkways or trails at any time. This prohibition includes loading and unloading purposes. (B)
• Fires are only allowed in designated metal fireplaces that are provided by the District. Use of all privately owned grills (gas or charcoal) is not permitted without prior approval from the District. Use of gas grills will require a certificate of insurance from your homeowner insurance carrier naming the Park District as additionally insured. (A)
The complete Park District rules, regulation and ordinances, which govern public usage of Park property and facilities, are available at the Administration Center or online at www.freeportparkdistrict.org/additionalinformationresources/. Tickets may be issued for violating regulations. Penalties vary. Park fines are determined by violation classifications: (A), (B), (C), and (D). Maximum fine is $500.
• Tents, nets or canopy structures are not permitted without prior approval from the Administration Office. (B)
• Picnics and events utilizing third party suppliers (tent rental, caterers, etc.) must be approved by the Park District in advance and may require the purchase of a liability insurance policy naming the Park District as additionally insured for the duration of the event including setup and breakdown dates. The use of all third-party suppliers require at least 30 days advance notice to the event.
• The use of amplified sound (public address systems, radios, boom box, musical instruments) is prohibited unless authorized in writing by the Executive Director. Groups seeking authorization should consider use of the Koenig Amphitheater. (B)
• The use of profane, abusive or loud, boisterous language or conducting oneself in a disorderly manner is prohibited. (A)
• Activities that damage or disturb any natural or man-made feature are prohibited. (A)
• Possession or consumption of alcohol and/or illegal drugs is prohibited. (A)
• The possession or discharge of firearms, fireworks or explosives is prohibited. (A)
• Wading or swimming in all district creeks and ponds is prohibited. (D)
• Minors under 10 years of age shall at all times be under the direct supervision and control of a parent, guardian or responsible adult custodian. The applicant/user is responsible for monitoring the conduct of their guests or invitees. (D)
• All dogs and pets must be on a leash, no longer than 10 feet, at all times. Hitching or tying an animal to a tree, bush or shrub is prohibited. The owner is responsible for the conduct of the animal and shall carry equipment and supplies for removing feces and shall place feces deposited by the dog or pet in an appropriate receptacle Continuously barking dogs and/or animals displaying overly aggressive behavior will not be permitted in any park. (D)
• All waste and trash must be deposited in proper garbage receptacles. (A)
Registration for Park District Programs is Handled on a First-Come, FirstServed Basis . The Importance of Registering Early
Please note that each Freeport Park District program has a registration deadline that is listed in the program description. Registration deadlines are created to allow time for staff to determine if minimum enrollment is met, create schedules, order supplies and equipment, form rosters and organize other resources to ensure a successful program. Registration may not be accepted after the published registration deadline. Many Freeport Park District programs have a maximum capacity and fill up quickly. It is strongly encouraged to register early to guarantee enrollment in a program.
The Freeport Park District reserves the right to cancel, postpone or combine classes.
Refunds for classes and events will be given if requested two weeks or more prior to the program start time (minus a $5 service charge). If a refund request is made within two weeks (14 days) of the start of the class or program, only a partial reimbursement (less a $5 service charge and direct program expenses) will be issued. Refunds for bus trips (minus a $5 service charge) will be issued only for a documented medical emergency or if arrangements are made for someone to fill the opening. Cash refunds will not be issued once the class/program has begun. A Program Refund Request Form must be completed and submitted to the Park District Administration Center before a refund will be issued.
The Freeport Park District provides year-round opportunities for individuals with disabilities to participate with their peers without disabilities in recreational programs. Inclusion opportunities are available to individuals of all ability levels and ages. If you or a family member would like to enroll in a Park District program and need assistance, simply request additional services at the time you register. The request will be reviewed and the appropriate assistance determined. The Recreation Supervisor will monitor progress throughout the program by staying in direct contact with the individual or caregiver. The sooner we have the information about your request, the better chances are for a successful inclusion experience. Please provide at least two weeks notice prior to the start of the program date for an inclusion request. Need Transportation?
The Freeport Park District does not provide transportation to and from programs, however, the Pretzel City Transit currently provides transportation 6:00 am through midnight Monday through Friday, and 6:00 am through 1:00 pm on Saturdays. All rides provided by Pretzel City Transit are demand response rides. In other words, there is no fixed route. Those needing a ride can call dispatch at 815-235-RIDE the day before to schedule a pick-up.
All participants attending Freeport Park District activities or using Freeport Park District facilities are expected to exhibit appropriate behavior at all times. The following guidelines have been created in order to maintain a safe, enjoyable environment for all participants. Additional rules and guidelines may vary for specific programs as deemed necessary by staff.
All Participants/Patrons Will:
• Show respect to all participants, staff, and volunteers.
• Follow program rules and take direction from recreation staff.
• Refrain from using abusive or foul language.
• Refrain from threatening or causing bodily harm to self or others.
• Show respect for property, including equipment, supplies, and facilities.
• Not be in possession of weapons.
If Inappropriate Behavior Does Occur, Recreation Staff Will Attempt to Resolve the Problem Using the Following Conduct Model:
• First offense – verbal warning.
• Second offense – time-out of activity and discussion with supervisor.
• Third offense – suspension of activity/ facility privileges, removal from activity/facility for remainder of the day.
If a participant continues to refuse following directions of recreation staff or if the incident is an emergency, Police will be called and the participant may face further disciplinary action. The Park District reserves the right to dismiss a participant whose behavior endangers his or her own safety or the safety of others.
