Written By: Kerri Jeter Interviewed By: Annette Whittenberger There has been incredible growth in entrepreneuHERship in the military community, including a 295% growth of women veteran owned business since 2007. (veteranentrepreneurship.org) As more women exit the military, we see many choosing to begin the journey of entrepreneurship and we are here for it. In communities across America, many women veterans feel invisible so, when we see a woman veteran accelHERating in the entrepreneur game, looking fabulous in the spotlight; many become enamored with the idea of success. Being in the constant spotlight when owning a business as a female and mother can put quite a bit of pressure on a person. What is not in the spotlight are the long hours spent behind the scenes and the hard work it takes to gain success. It can be easy to idolize or romanticize what entrepreneurship means but at the end of the day it boils down to determination, grit, and sacrifice. We think Charlynda Scales, FoundHER of Mutt’s Sauce, is the embodiment of entrepreneuHERship. So how does she do it all? Scales, FoundHER of Mutt’s Sauce is an energetic, dynamic, and full-of-life woman who wears multiple hats, in addition to being a successful entrepreneuHER. Since human-to-human connections are the heart and soul of success in the business world, we want to give you a peek at the woman, motHER, and U.S. Air Force Officer behind the sauce.

FOB HOPE: REST-RESUPPLY- READY FOR NEXT MISSION Veterans sacrifice so much for our country but when a veteran becomes homeless they are often forgotten. One woman has made it her mission not only to remember them but also help them. Monique Brown, a 26-year Army Veteran, is on the front lines in the streets of Pierce and King Counties in Washington state, where she has been an advocate for Homeless Veterans since her exit of military service in 2014. Brown began serving homeless veterans as a Veterans Outreach Specialist with El Centro De La Raza in Seattle by conducting outreach to find homeless veterans and beginning the process to find them safe housing. Much to her surprise, many didn’t want to go into shelters, so she went to a few to figure out why not. “I visited a couple of shelters and they were crowded. One, in particular, reminded me of county jail with all of the bunk beds and footlockers just kind of on top of each other,” described Brown. “There's a lot of fighting among the occupants in the shelters, a lot of mental health issues, and they [veterans] just didn't want to be involved in that, especially veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, it’s just hard to be in that environment.” However, there is a gap in services for those that want to stay out of the shelters but need help to survive on the streets.
BE HER
“The best and most beautiful things in the world
cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart.”
- Helen Keller
