ECONOMIC BENEFITS The proposed Hayward Solar Project is anticipated to be an important economic driver for Freeborn County. The 150-megawatt project represents an investment of $128 million in the area economy, which includes:
CONSTRUCTION PHASE
• Direct impact: Investment of $128.8 million, with direct spending in Freeborn County estimated to be $15.6 million; 204 employees on-site and $7.9 million in wages • Total impact: $30.9 million in economic activity, including $13.6 million in labor income and supporting 204 on-site direct jobs and an additional 115 jobs across all industries • Tax revenue: $461,870 in state and local taxes
OPERATIONS PHASE
• Direct impact: Annual expenditures of $2.2 million, including payments to the landowners, and 4 on-site jobs • Total impact: Annual economic impact of $3.3 million, supporting 14 jobs (4 on-site and 10 in other industries) • Tax revenue: $99,040 annually in state and local tax revenues At the same time, operating solar projects are quiet neighbors that have minimal impact on the surrounding area. There are no proven health or safety risks, no tall towers or equipment, and no increase in local traffic. And, there is no increase in demand for local services, such as police or schools.
